At the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers in downtown Wichita stands a magnificent sculpture honoring the native American history of Kansas. This iconic sculpture is known as the Keeper of the Plains. It was created by a Wichita artist of Comanche and Kiowa descent, who had a remarkable career in the arts.&nbsp;

Blackbear Bosin is the artist who created this remarkable work. Much of the following information comes from the book&nbsp;Blackbear Bosin: Keeper of the Indian Spirit, by Bosin’s stepson, David Simmonds.&nbsp;

Blackbear Bosin was born in Oklahoma in 1921 to a Kiowa father and Comanche mother. His native name, which belonged to his paternal grandfather (a Kiowa chief), means Blackbear in English.&nbsp;

Young Blackbear Bosin attended a mission school in Oklahoma where he studied the collection of Kiowa and European art objects and dabbled in painting. He went on to the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilocco_Indian_Agricultural_School" target="_blank">Chilocco Indian Agricultural School</a>&nbsp;where he trained to work with sheet metal and then moved to Wichita with his wife. During World War II, he enlisted in the Marines.&nbsp;

In 1943, he fell ill and was hospitalized at the naval hospital in Hawaii. There, he took up painting again. His art was so well regarded that the hospital hosted a one-man exhibition of his works before his discharge in 1945.&nbsp;

Having regained his health, he returned to Wichita where he became an industrial designer and product illustrator for Boeing. He later worked in the training aids and arts department at McConnell Air Force Base. Meanwhile, he was building his career as an artist.&nbsp;

In 1946, he entered a painting, called&nbsp;Green Corn Dance,&nbsp;in the Philbrook Art Institute’s first Indian Artists Annual competition and earned his first award.&nbsp;

From 1947-50, his work was on exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, Detroit Institute of Arts, Smithsonian Institution and more. In 1953, he produced&nbsp;Prairie Fire, which would win first place from the Philbrook and was featured in the May 1955 National Geographic. This painting was said to bring him international recognition.&nbsp;

In 1959, Bosin opened the Great Plains Studio in Wichita. In 1960, he won the Grand Prize at the All-Indian Show in New York. The following year he travelled to Switzerland to receive honors after he was elected a Fellow of the International Institution of Arts and Letters.&nbsp;

Bosin was the only Native American artist to participate in the 1965 White House Festival of the Arts. After winning the Victory Trophy from the Philbrook in 1967, he chose to stop entering art competitions because he felt it was time for younger artists to gain recognition.&nbsp;

His creative work continued. He designed the logos for the Mid-America Indian Center in Wichita and the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant which is located near the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of Burlington, population 2,764 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

In 1969, one of Bosin’s friends at the Kansas Gas &amp; Electric Company asked if he would design a large-scale statue as tribute to the Indigenous peoples in the Wichita area.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bosin agreed. It became the iconic structure known as Keeper of the Plains, placed near the rivers in downtown Wichita.&nbsp;

A City of Wichita website describes it as a sculpture “with hands raised in supplication to the Great Spirit.” After a restoration and river beautification project, the five-ton, 44 foot tall sculpture now stands elevated on a 30-foot rock promontory, surrounded by a plaza which describes the Plains Indian way of life.&nbsp;

Bosin was commissioned to create ten designs for the Franklin Mint for a series of sterling silver medals about Native American history.&nbsp;The coins depicted various historical events with one side of the coin featuring the “traditional view” and the other side of the coin featuring the “Indian interpretation” of those events. In 1977, the state of Kansas awarded Bosin the Distinguished Service Award. &nbsp;

Blackbear Bosin passed away in 1980, but his magnificent sculpture still stands on what is considered sacred ground in Wichita. We commend this Kansan for making a difference with creativity in art. Like the Keeper of the Plains statue itself, the impact of Blackbear Bosin stands tall.&nbsp;

Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum

LINDSBORG - Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum is inviting the community to pick out some work clothes, roll up their sleeves, and come out on Oct. 1 to spruce up the museum’s buildings and grounds.

Caroline de Filippis, community development director, said this is a perfect opportunity to show support.

“We’re celebrating our 60th anniversary as a museum this year,” de Filippis said. “It’s a wonderful milestone, but it also reminds us of how important regular maintenance is to keep this place beautiful.”

The work day will run 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., but volunteers can come and go as their availability will allow. Meet at the main museum at 120 E. Mill Street in Lindsborg to volunteer.

Necessary work planned for the day will include organization and cleaning, landscaping, and fence repair, so please wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty or torn as part of the day’s work.

The museum will be providing refreshments to volunteers, as well as lunch for full-day workers. In order to plan accordingly, the museum is asking volunteers to please register with a quick survey at <a href="http://www.oldmillmuseum.org/events">www.oldmillmuseum.org/events</a>.

Volunteer Work Day Oct. 1 at Old Mill & Swedish Heritage Museum

Salina Family Healthcare Center (SFHC) recently was recognized for its community healthcare work.

SFHC received four award badges from the Health Resources and Services Administration. The awards are as follows.

The Health Center Quality Leader award is presented to community health centers that achieve top 30 percent best overall performance on a panel of health care quality metrics that include preventative care, cancer screenings, and chronic disease care.

The Access Enhancer award was presented because SFHC increased by at least five percent the number patients who received at least one comprehensive service (behavioral health, vision, dental).

The Health Disparities Reducer award was presented to SFHC for its work to improve care provided to specific underserved populations while maintaining overall quality and performance as a clinic.

The Patient Centered Medical Home award showcases SFHC's continued approach to patient-centered care and continued work in care coordination and quality improvement.

"These badges recognize how everyone at Salina Family breathes life into our shared values of excellence, access, social justice, and patient-centeredness," said Chief Executive Officer Robert Kraft, M.D. "HRSA does not have an award for education, but we have achieved these great things in patient care all while educating the next generation of healthcare professionals, too!"

K-State Salina adds bachelor's degree in aviation management

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation today announced Renee Duxler, director of Economic &amp; Workforce Development at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, was selected to participate in the seventh cohort of its premiere business leadership program. 

The Business Leads Fellowship Program trains and equips leaders from state and local chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, and trade associations with resources, access to experts, and a network of peers to build their capacity to address the most pressing education and workforce challenges.

“I’m thrilled to be able to represent Kansas, and specifically Salina, with this national fellowship,” said Duxler. “But more importantly I’m looking forward to the high-level problem solving and idea sharing that will occur as we work together so intensively over the next six months. Accessible and quality education is such an important piece to building thriving and vibrant communities, and now more than ever we need to get innovative with initiatives that set everyone up for success.”

“We created the Business Leads Fellowship Program in response to the needs of our state and local chamber partners,” said Cheryl Oldham, senior vice president of the Center for Education and Workforce. “They, better than anyone, see the critical link between education and economic development, and we are glad to be able to support them as they take on this critical leadership role in their community.”

Following a competitive application and selection process, Duxler was selected along with 34 other state and local chamber executives, economic development professionals, and association leaders to participate in the seventh class of this program. The six-month program, consisting of both in person and virtual meetings, will cover the entire talent pipeline, including early childhood education, K-12, postsecondary education, and workforce development.

Upon completion, Business Leads Fellows will join the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s dedicated network of over 250 chambers of commerce and statewide associations from around the nation who regularly engage on education and workforce initiatives.

ASSARIA - A small earthquake shook part of southeastern Saline County Saturday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.6 magnitude quake struck at 4:56 p.m. Saturday east-southeast of Assaria. The quake was centered northeast of the E. Hedberg Road/S. Woodward Road intersection.

 </figure>According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.6 magnitude quake struck at 4:56 p.m. Saturday east-southeast of Assaria. The quake was centered northeast of the E. Hedberg Road/S. Woodward Road intersection.

Small quake strikes southeastern Saline County Saturday p.m.

CONCORDIA - Cloud County Community College has received a $500,000 grant from the Patterson Family Foundation. 

These funds represent an award received by CCCC’s Foundation, and will be used for construction of the college’s Technical Education and Innovation Center. The new facility will provide modern access to quality education in critical need, high-demand careers in Kansas.

“We are extremely grateful for this generous gift from the Patterson Family Foundation, which puts us even closer to our fundraising goal,” said CCCC President Amber Knoettgen. “Construction of the Center aligns well with the Patterson Family Foundation’s mission to advance health care, education and strengthen communities, particularly in rural areas.”

The approximately 35,000 square foot center will house Renewable Energy, which includes Wind and Solar Energy and Drones; Nursing and Allied Health, which also offers high-demand career education for EMT, CNA, CMA, Home Health Aide, and IV Therapy; and Agriculture and Industrial Technology, including welding and CDL training.

Cloud County is in the late stages of fundraising for the tech center, and naming opportunities for additional donors are still available.

“It is humbling to see the overwhelming support across the state of Kansas for this project,” Knoettgen said.

The $13.9 million project will begin in late 2022, with construction expected to be completed in spring 2024.

CCCC receives $500,000 grant for new tech center

MCPHERSON COUNTY —A Salina man died in an accident just before 2:30 p.m. Saturday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported 2008 Mercury Sable driven by Ashlynn J.&nbsp;Hamiliton, 19, Wichita, was eastbound on Kansas Highway 4 at 15th Avenue, approximately 2.2 miles east of Lindsborg.

The driver made a left turn in front of a westbound 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Bryan N. Hernandez, 53, Salina.&nbsp;

The motorcycle struck the car on the right passenger side and overturned. Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the&nbsp;Sedgwick County Forensic Center.

EMS transported Hamiliton and a passenger in the car&nbsp;Howard, Aubrey M. Howard, 19, Wichita, to Lindsborg Community Hospital. Two other passengers in the car were not injured.

Hernandez was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Gridiron Glory kicks off Thursday! Have you registered yet?

ABILENE - Memorial Hospital in Abilene has announced the hiring of Melissa Taplin as OR director for the Memorial Hospital Outpatient and Surgical Services Department.

Taplin began her duties as director on Aug. 8. She had been filling in as the interim manager since July 1. Taplin was a familiar face even before July, as she has worked for Memorial Hospital since the start of her nursing career in 2000 when she started as a ward clerk in the Inpatient/OB Unit. 

While Taplin was working as the ward clerk, she also was working toward her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from Wichita State University, and doing her clinicals at Memorial Hospital.

Taplin obtained her BSN in 2001, and after a few short years made a move to the Outpatient and Surgical Services Department in 2004, but still continued to work in the Inpatient/OB unit for a shift every week. In 2010, Taplin put on another hat for Memorial Health System by adding some Employee Health Nurse duties to her job description. This included making sure employees were up-to-date with their vaccinations and also checking new-hire screenings. Taplin has taken care of employees up to the beginning of this year. 

Taplin is a Kansas native, originally from Oberlin, but came to call Abilene her home after meeting her husband, Brant Taplin, who grew up in Abilene. They have two sons.

The Dickinson County Senior Network has planned an event at the Abilene Community Center which will spotlight the various programs and resources available to seniors in the county.

Dickinson County Commission proclaims Sept. 9 Seniors Day

Today is Saturday, Sept. 3, the 246th day of 2022. There are 119 days left in the year.

On Sept. 3, 1783, representatives of the United States and Britain signed the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the Revolutionary War.

In 1861, during the Civil War, Confederate forces invaded the border state of Kentucky, which had declared its neutrality in the conflict.

In 1939, Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany, two days after the Nazi invasion of Poland; in a radio address, Britain's King George VI said, "With God's help, we shall prevail." The same day, a German U-boat torpedoed and sank the British liner SS Athenia some 250 miles off the Irish coast, killing more than 100 out of the 1,400 or so people on board.

In 1943, Allied forces invaded Italy during World War II, the same day Italian officials signed a secret armistice with the Allies.
