Kirkham Michael is a growing company in need of an energetic and knowledgeable individual to fill our full-time Assistant Construction Observer position.&nbsp; This position will be located in either our Ellsworth, Cheney, Hays, Salina, or Garden City, Kansas offices.&nbsp;

Performs inspection services along haul routes for energy projects, including acting as a liaison between County and Developer. Maintains daily job log and is familiar with plans and specifications. Has some exposure to clients. No initial responsibility for the direction of others.&nbsp; Performs several basic engineering and mathematical procedures, which require following instructions and guidelines, and providing accurate and complete records of that work.&nbsp; Assist experienced staff performing inspection and testing on energy and transportation related construction projects. Receives supervision from senior-level Engineering staff.&nbsp;

●High School Diploma or equivalent.&nbsp;

●Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.&nbsp;

●CIT certifications and/or construction inspection experience preferred but not required.&nbsp;

Monday to Friday overnight travel is required for this position. Lodging and per diem paid by the company. Work environment is primarily outdoors.&nbsp;

Pay starts at $18.00 per hour if no inspection experience or certifications.&nbsp;

A musical staple for more than five decades is coming to Salina's Stiefel Theatre in the spring.

Asleep at the Wheel featuring Brennen Leigh and Joshua Hedley: The Past, Present and Future of Country &amp; Western Music is scheduled for 8 p.m. April 7 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

These three artists will take you through all forms of country and western music playing their hits as well as special songs from the past for a non-stop evening of fun. Asleep at the Wheel has been part of the American roots music landscape for more than 50 years. Although the band got its start on a farm in Paw Paw, W.Va., Asleep at the Wheel became a cornerstone of the Austin, Texas, scene upon its arrival in 1973. Inspired by western swing and honky-tonk country, the band has accrued 10 Grammy awards. Ray Benson carries the band back onto the road, where they’ve remained a staple for five decades.

At a towering 6’7”, the Philadelphia-born Benson is considered a giant in the industry. However, it’s his contributions to music history, not his height, that have made him a dominant figure on the music scene since 1970. Benson is the frontman and founder of the world-renowned Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel. For fifty-plus years, Ray has been the driving force behind “The Wheel” and has overseen the release of more than 25 albums, countless tours, and has won 10 Grammy Awards. 2009’s release of Willie &amp; The Wheel with collaborator Willie Nelson garnered another Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album, and 2015’s Still the King: Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys won a Grammy for Best Recording Package. Asleep at the Wheel’s first original record in more than a decade, New Routes, was released in September 2018.

BRENNEN LEIGH: Leigh is an American songwriter, guitar player, mandolin player, and singer whose to-the-point storytelling style has elevated her to cult icon status in Europe, across the United States, and South America. As renowned for her musicianship as for her writing, it’s easy to see how Leigh caught the ear of greats like Guy Clark, who endorsed her flatpicking. Her new album, Obsessed with the West, is a smart, sexy ode to western swing featuring Asleep at the Wheel as the backing band. On all 12 original songs, Leigh’s supple winking voice and multi-instrument fluency, her interplay with Ray Benson, and the undeniable chops of the Wheel serve up a treat on Leigh's seventh album.

JOSHUA HEDLEY: Hedley is “a singing professor of country and western,” he declares on his raucous and witty new album, Neon Blue. It might sound like a punchline, but it’s not. An ace fiddle player, a sharp guitarist, and a singer with a granite twang, he’s devoted his entire life to the study of this genre. “When all my friends went off to college, I went to Nashville. I was 19 years old playing honkytonks and getting an education.” His 2018 debut, Mr. Jukebox, showcased his deep knowledge of country’s history, in particular the beery ballads of the 1950s and 1960s. His mentors were George Jones, Ray Price, and Glen Campbell, but his most remarkable accomplishment was putting his own spin on their style.

There were 194 reported cases of COVID-19 throughout the month of November, up from the 157 cases reported in the previous month. 

Salina Regional reported six hospitalizations due to COVID-19. 

While COVID-19 continues to spread, most cases are being well-managed at home.

The Salina Educational Automotive Museum of America - aka The Garage - was honored Tuesday for its work to help keep children safe.

Safe Kids Kansas recognized the museum during the organization's annual awards ceremony Tuesday in Topeka. The Garage received an Outstanding Coalition Organization award.

"We are thrilled to have been selected for this award. Our partnership with Safe Kids of Kansas is vital to our long-term success at The Garage," Michelle Peck, executive director of the museum told Salina Post.

"We invested over $1 million dollars in hands-on exhibits, such as a Seatbelt Convincer, which simulates a 5-mile-per-hour collision and instills the importance of wearing a 3-point seatbelt," she continued. "My staff and the high-tech driving simulators have aided in the experience of those enrolled in Royal Driving School, which meets once a month with groups of up to 30 students. Using the Seatbelt Convincer and our driving simulators, students are offered the opportunity to learn how to drive a manual transmission, or how to tow a trailer."

Peck noted that the driving simulators already have more than 900 hours on them.

The Garage, 134 S. Fourth Street, opened to the public on Feb. 11. The facility includes 40,000 square feet of museum space, a training center, a library and lounge, a gift shop, a theater, a Turbo Trivia Tower, educational fueling stations, LEGO and Hot Wheels exhibits, driving simulators, welding and painting simulators, a Seatbelt Convincer ride, a car seat safety program, and curriculum resources.

In presenting the award to The Garage, Safe Kids Kansas noted the following.

The Garage has created a place where automotive history &amp; safety can be celebrated, and a service can be provided to its patrons. In addition to showcasing an impressive collection of cars on exhibit, The Garage also offers a variety of interactive experiences to aid in the mission of teaching automotive safety and interest in the vocational arts. This includes the investment into a Seatbelt Convincer, which simulates a 5 mile per hour collision and instills the importance of wearing a seatbelt, driving simulators, a welding simulator and paint spray simulator. The Garage partners with Royal Driving School to provide the opportunity for participants to utilize these tools in learn skills such as driving a manual transmission vehicle, or how to tow a trailer. They also offer a Turbo Trivia Tower with automotive-themed quizzes, including a selection of questions from the Kansas Learner’s Permit Test, to monitor progress and comprehension through their coursework. They also host a monthly Cars &amp; Coffee event for their members that has been dubbed the “Donut Drink &amp; Drive”, where safety information is provided and is up for discussion. This ranges from proper car seat/booster seat use to impaired driving consequences. The Garage staff and board of directors are dedicated not only to the history of the automobile, but also to teaching the next generation the importance of automobile safety.

The Garage received an Outstanding Coalition Organization award."We are thrilled to have been selected for this award. Our partnership with Safe Kids of Kansas is vital to our long-term success at The Garage," Michelle Peck, executive director of the museum told Salina Post."We invested over $1 million dollars in hands-on exhibits, such as a Seatbelt Convincer, which simulates a 5-mile-per-hour collision and instills the importance of wearing a 3-point seatbelt," she continued. "My staff and the high-tech driving simulators have aided in the experience of those enrolled in Royal Driving School, which meets once a month with groups of up to 30 students. Using the Seatbelt Convincer and our driving simulators, students are offered the opportunity to learn how to drive a manual transmission, or how to tow a trailer."Peck noted that the driving simulators already have more than 900 hours on them.<figure>

The facility includes 40,000 square feet of museum space, a training center, a library and lounge, a gift shop, a theater, a Turbo Trivia Tower, educational fueling stations, LEGO and Hot Wheels exhibits, driving simulators, welding and painting simulators, a Seatbelt Convincer ride, a car seat safety program, and curriculum resources.The Garage joined the Safe Kids Kansas coalition shortly before the museum's public opening.<figure>

The Garage in Salina garners recognition from Safe Kids Kansas

As part of its new Dental Hygiene program, Salina Area Technical College is opening a clinic on campus in January, with the goals of providing students an opportunity to develop their hands-on skills, and provide low-cost services to the public.

The students will work under the supervision of licensed Dental Hygienists and a Dentist, providing basic services such as teeth cleanings, whitening and sealants, to patients ages four and up. Costs will be substantially lower than usual; an adult cleaning will cost $20 to $40, depending on the status of the patient’s oral health needs.

The clinic will operate during the school year, on Mondays from Noon to 3:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and services are by appointment only. Because the Dental Hygiene students are learning their skills, appointments could take as long as 3-1/2 hours with the possibility of the need to return for additional appointments to provide the highest standard of dental hygiene care.

“Our students are looking forward to seeing patients when they come back from Christmas break,” said Brooke Horner, Director of Allied Dental Education. “And even though we’re just beginning to advertise the clinic, support from the community has been amazing – there are huge numbers of people out there who don’t have access to regular dental care right now.”

Salina Tech opening dental hygiene clinic

A traffic violation led to the arrest of two Salinans on requested drug charges and a requested firearms charge late Thursday morning in north Salina.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that an officer on patrol in the 500 block of E. Pacific Avenue saw a blue motorcycle with a man and a woman on it driving eastbound just before noon. The officer recognized the motorcycle as being associated with someone he knew to have an active Saline County District Court warrant.

The duo headed south on N. Ohio Street, pulling into Casey's, 500 N. Ohio Street, with the officer following to conduct a traffic stop as the license plate on the motorcycle had expired in July of 2021, Forrester said. At that point, other officers had also arrived.

Officers went inside the store and made contact with the driver, identified as Dillon Sonnier, 23, of Salina. Forrester said that when they took Sonnier outside to talk about the expired license plate, he became nervous and asked to go into the restroom. Instead, officers patted him down and found an SCCY 9mm handgun in his coat. They also found a small metal container with pills that were later identified as amphetamine.

Forrester said that because Sonnier was a convicted felon, he was not to be in possession of a firearm.

Sonnier was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Meanwhile, the woman who had been on the motorcycle had gone into the women's restroom and refused to exit, however, a store employee finally got her to leave the restroom, Forrester. The woman, identified as Elektra Iford, 22, of Salina, had an active warrant from Saline County District Court.

Forrester said Iford was arrested on the warrant and on the following requested charges.

MANHATTAN – An official with the Kansas Department of Commerce told a gathering of entrepreneurs and community planners recently that the agency has allotted $1.5 million in 2023 to help the state’s communities restore aging downtown areas.&nbsp;

Linda Hunsicker, a specialist with the Department of Commerce’s Community Development Block Grants program, said the funds take aim at blight in Kansas’ communities.&nbsp;

“The goal is to strategically invest grant funds to prevent the spread of blighted conditions to structures,” Hunsicker said. “We want communities to improve downtown buildings so that those buildings will continue to thrive in the communities and (residents) will have a nice, beautiful downtown.”&nbsp;

Hunsicker was the featured speaker during the Dec. 1&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ksre.k-state.edu/community/business/entrepreneurship" target="_blank">First Friday e-Call</a>, a monthly online series hosted by K-State Research and Extension that helps to nurture small businesses and inspire entrepreneurship in Kansas. The online discussions, which routinely host dozens of Kansas citizens from the public and private sectors, are available free each month.&nbsp;

Hunsicker said the Kansas Department of Commerce provides grants through its’ Commercial Rehabilitation program. Working through their local government, private property owners can apply for up to $250,000 to rehabilitate blighted buildings.&nbsp;

A new funding cycle begins on Jan 2, 2023.&nbsp;

“Because we have such strong interest in this program, we will limit communities or units of government to one application,” Hunsicker said. “If we have money left on July 1 (2023), a city that was funded previously can come back in.”&nbsp;

Hunsicker said the awards are limited to communities based on their size. Governments in some larger communities – including Kansas City, Lawrence, Leavenworth, Manhattan, Overland Park, Topeka, Wichita and all of Johnson County – are not eligible for Commercial Rehabilitation grants, though they may be eligible for other programs offered through the Department of Commerce.&nbsp;

Property owners that are eligible for Commercial Rehabilitation grants must provide a 25% match, proving that the building proposed for rehabilitation is a blight and conditions exist that pose a threat to public health and safety.&nbsp;

Improvements are limited to improvements to the exterior portions of the building; asbestos abatement; lead-based paint evaluation and reduction; and correcting code violations. If the application includes a historic building, improvements must be approved by the Kansas Historical Society.&nbsp;

On Thursday, December 8, 2022, McPherson Police Chief Mikel Golden graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Chief Golden began training at the FBI National Academy 10 weeks ago, in mid-October and successfully completed the training this week. Chief Golden’s training included classroom instruction, physical fitness, and much, much more.

Chief Mikel Golden has dedicated over 15 years of law enforcement service to the McPherson community. He joined the McPherson Police Department in October 2006 as a Patrol Officer. While attending the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center - Class 189, his classmates voted him Class President. In 2008, Chief Golden was promoted to Detective and was selected for the Police Specialty Team. Assignments included the McPherson Drug Task Force in 2010 followed by the Assistant Team Leader for the Emergency Response Team in 2018. Chief Golden was promoted to Assistant Chief of Police and Commander of the Emergency Response Team in April 2018.

On September 30, 2019, Chief Golden was promoted to Chief of Police. Chief Golden is a member of the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police and the Kansas Peace Officers Association. He has served on professional boards including the Kansas Gang Investigator Association (Regional Representative), Kansas Narcotics Officer Association (Regional Representative), McPherson County Crime Stoppers (Coordinator), McPherson Police Department Benefit Association (President) and City of McPherson Safety Committee. Chief Golden holds Bachelor of Science Degrees in Criminal Justice and in Business Organizational Leadership from Central Christian College of Kansas. He is also a graduate of FBI-LEEDA (Trilogy), the Kansas Police Administrators Seminar, Leadership McPherson, and the KU Law Enforcement Leadership Academy.

Kicking off the holidays with candy canes, airplanes

You might have heard that scams mostly affect older adults, but&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/12/new-analysis-shows-adults-under-60-report-losses-online-shopping-scams-investment-scams-more-older">reports to the FTC</a>&nbsp;tell a different story.

Last year, adults under 60 — our Gen X, Millennial, and Gen Z neighbors — were more likely to report losing money to fraud than people 60 and over. And what did they report the most? Losing money to&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/online-shopping">online shopping fraud</a>, often when things pitched to them on social media never arrived.Compared to older adults, those under 60 were more than four times as likely to report losing money on an investment scam, often a&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-cryptocurrency-and-scams">fake cryptocurrency investment</a>&nbsp;opportunity, and more than five times as likely to report losing money to a&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/job-scams">job scam</a>.&nbsp;Many college students reported losing money to phony job offers sent to their school email addresses. Overall, adults under 60 most often reported losing money to scams that started on social media, a website, or an app, and their median reported fraud loss was $500.People over 60 were less likely to report losing money to fraud, but their reported losses were higher. The median reported loss was $800 among people in their 70s and jumped to $1,500 for people over 80. Older adults were more likely to report losing money to&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-spot-avoid-report-tech-support-scams">tech support scammers</a>&nbsp;—&nbsp;cons who urge people to pay for unneeded computer repairs&nbsp;—&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/fake-prize-sweepstakes-lottery-scams">prize, sweepstakes, and lottery scams</a>&nbsp;that demand payment but never give a prize. About one in four of the older adults’ loss reports said the scam started with a phone call.Sharing what you know about scams helps protect people of all ages around you.
