FHSU Foundation Awareness Day reminds students of the importance of philanthropy

HAYS – Students kicked off the month of September at the annual Awareness Day event in Fort Hays State University’s Robbins Center. While enjoying a free lunch, students learned about the importance of private support and fundraising at FHSU.

With generous support from Astra Bank, $2,500 in scholarships was awarded. Students who shared photos from the event on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter using the hashtag #AwarenessDay were entered to receive an additional $500 scholarship. Students wearing FHSU apparel also gained an extra entry in the drawings.

The following students received Astra Bank Awareness Day scholarships to support their education:

Lincoln's Vath among scholarship recipients

LINCOLN — Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson indicated Friday he will evaluate the state’s legal options in pursuing funds that may have been fraudulently spent via the state’s contract with a Kansas foster care provider.

Peterson responded to a request by state Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh to explore whether Saint Francis Ministries defrauded the State of Nebraska during its failed child welfare contract.

The state severed its contract with Saint Francis in December 2021, after the organization failed to fulfill its obligations to 2,500 foster children it oversaw in eastern Nebraska. The failure came despite an additional $110 million in emergency funding from the state.

The request Thursday by Cavanaugh, who has led criticism of the contract with Kansas-based Saint Francis, comes on the heels of revelations by Kansas Reflector.

Kansas Reflector recently reported the FBI moved to seize assets of a subcontractor of Saint Francis, WMK Research, and its owner, William Whymark, after it was discovered that Whymark had submitted millions of dollars of fraudulent invoices to Saint Francis. The invoices inflated Whymark’s expenses as well as the information technology work he claimed to have performed.

Cavanaugh said Nebraska, in the interest of its taxpayers, needs to explore if it was also a victim of fraud and whether it should be pursuing reimbursement of funds it spent.

The senator said she appreciated the response from the attorney general.

“They gave me a response fairly quickly,” Cavanaugh said Friday. “I’m hopeful that means they agree that there’s something worth looking into.”

A spokeswoman for Peterson declined to comment on Thursday.

But in an email to Cavanaugh on Friday, Peterson said he would “sit down with a team of lawyers to evaluate our legal options” based on the recent information.

Cavanaugh said it’s particularly important that the Attorney General’s Office explore this issue before Peterson, who did not seek reelection, leaves office in January.

Saint Francis, the largest foster care provider in Kansas, has sued its former leadership, alleging they hid the misspending of millions of dollars from its board of directors.

Federal investigators, in court documents, have identified nearly $11 million in billing to Sant Francis as probably fraudulent.

Saint Francis Ministries has taken issue with an&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/08/12/kansas-foster-care-provider-suing-former-leaders-for-alleged-financial-misconduct/">Aug. 12 story</a>&nbsp;by Kansas Reflector, calling portions of it “inaccurate” and “false.” But Saint Francis would not, when asked, identify specific statements in question.

Local, area bodies of water under blue-green algae advisories

The Labor Day holiday on Monday brings with it local government closings.

Most City of Salina and Saline County offices and facilities will be closed Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

On Monday, however, city crews will be providing regularly scheduled refuse collection. The city landfill is scheduled to close at 2 p.m. Monday.

Both city and county offices and facilities are scheduled to return to regular hours on Tuesday.

Because of the holiday, there also will be no Salina City Commission meeting on Monday.

Additionally, the Salina Public Library will be closed.

This week the Salina Police Department, Salina Fire Department, Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Salina Regional Health Center, and USD 305 staff participated in active shooter training. Salina Regional Health Center was gracious enough to provide a space to train, provided role players, and were able to train their staff along with officers, deputies, and EMS personnel. Thank you SRHC for the continued support and partnership in this endeavor. Great training and experience for all involved.

Widely scattered storms are possible Friday evening and Friday night across portions of central and northern Kansas. 

Dime-size hail, 55 to 60 mph winds, and locally heavy rain may accompany the strongest activity.

On Tuesday, Salina Police Department officers took a report of a subject passing a counterfeit bill at Casey’s, 1100 E. Iron Avenue. 

At approximately 5:22 a.m. on Tuesday, a female suspect pulled up to the gas pumps in a silver four-door Dodge Avenger. She entered the store and prepaid for fuel using a $100 bill. It was later discovered the bill was counterfeit.

The subject was described as a middle-aged white female, medium build with dark hair.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about Casey's counterfeit cash case

SILVER SPRING, Md. – The Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) independent Accreditation Commission met to review applications for AZA accreditation at the AZA’s Annual Conference held this year in Baltimore, Md.

Among those facilities receiving accreditation was Salina's own Rolling Hills Zoo!

The AZA accreditation process includes a detailed application and a meticulous, on-site, multiple-day inspection by an independent team of expert zoological professionals. The inspecting team analyzes all aspects of the facility’s operation, including animal welfare and well-being; veterinary care; keeper training; safety for visitors, staff, and animals; educational programs; conservation efforts; financial stability; risk management; governance; and guest services. Detailed reports from the inspection team and the facility alike are then thoroughly evaluated by the Commission. Finally, top officials are interviewed by the Accreditation Commission at a formal hearing, after which accreditation is fully granted, provisionally granted for one year, or denied.

Of the accreditation applications reviewed during the AZA Annual Conference, 24 were previously accredited facilities, and three were new applicants. There were also two applicants for certification who were also previously certified and one new applicant for certification. Later in September, seven facilities will have virtual accreditation hearings.

Each facility underwent a thorough review to make sure it has and will continue to meet ever-rising standards, which emphasize animal wellbeing, veterinary programs, conservation, education, and safety. AZA requires facilities to complete this rigorous accreditation process every five years as a condition of Association membership.

“The public expectations for animal care are constantly increasing, as are our own, which is why AZA’s accreditation standards are focused on providing the best animal care possible,” said Dan Ashe, President and CEO of AZA. “Our rigorous accreditation standards evolve based on modern animal research, ensuring a process the public can trust. We applaud and admire these exceptional zoos, aquariums, and related facilities on meeting the ‘gold standard’ for a modern zoological facility.”

Reflecting the rigor of AZA’s standards and the independence of its accreditation process, the Commission denied accreditation to two facilities: African Safari Wildlife Park, located in Port Clinton, Ohio, and Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, located in Holderness, New Hampshire. As existing members, they have 30 days to appeal the Commission’s decision to the AZA board of directors’ Executive Committee. If an appeal is received, the Executive Committee has 45 days to decide if the full AZA board of directors should consider the appeal at its next regularly scheduled meeting. The AZA board can overturn or modify Commission decisions, although it is rare to do so. If the denial is upheld, both facilities will be eligible to apply for AZA accreditation again in September 2023, and the earliest they could regain accreditation would be March 2024.

Rolling Hills Zoo among those receiving prestigious AZA accreditation

TOPEKA –&nbsp;McPherson High School has been selected as the KSHSAA Performing Arts School of Excellence award winner.

A total of 17 Kansas high schools will receive recognition by the Kansas State High School Activities As­sociation (KSHSAA) for outstanding performing arts programs.

A selection committee was formed from the following associations: Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA), Kan­sas Speech Communication Association (KSCA) and the Kansas Thespians (Theatre). Leaders from these three associa­tions along with the KSHSAA staff collaborated to discuss numerous high schools that scored exceptionally high in de­bate, speech, music, and theater during the 2021-22 school year. The committee and the KSHSAA chose one winner, three finalists and 13 commended schools from across our great state. All 17 schools will be recognized with a certificate from the KSHSAA in September.

Kansas Wesleyan has announced that it will bring back the popular 7x7x7 lecture series, which debuted on campus last year, for this year’s Homecoming and Family Weekend. 

The event will be held Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. in Peters Science Hall 201 on campus. It will feature seven local leaders speaking on seven different topics for seven minutes apiece. Admission is free and no tickets are required.

“The 7x7x7 lecture series has added a new element of community to homecoming,” said Michelle Dolan, director of development, stewardship and alumni. “Those returning to campus can learn more about the great opportunities available to our students, while our students, in turn, can connect with community leaders.”

This year’s slate features Adrienne Allen, executive director of Salina Symphony, speaking about the symphony’s new beginning this year. Yaniv Segal was announced in May as just the third music director in the organization’s 67-year history.

Michael Spicer, executive director of Theatre Salina, will also be a featured speaker. Spicer will discuss Theatre Salina’s education department, Center for Theatre Arts, and the organization’s collaboration with KWU. The university and Theatre Salina will work together again this year on a spring musical, “Something’s Rotten,” in March and April.

Angela Smith, special assistant to the president at KWU, will speak on the university’s Community Resilience Hub, while Brad Anderson, longtime director of Salina Arts and Humanities, will share the latest from that organization.

Stan Cox of The Land Institute will talk about on his latest book, A Path to a Livable Future: A New Politics to Fight Climate Change, Racism and the Next Pandemic,&nbsp; while Kris Heck, ’20, (KWU campus historian) and Brandon Henson (president of the KWU Multicultural Student Union) will present, as well.&nbsp;

KWU reveals speakers for 7x7x7 Lecture Series

I recently had a judgment filed against me for an unpaid, old hospital bill. Is it possible to negotiate things with the lawyer? Originally, the charges were $2,700 but now they have increased to $3,500, and I am not sure why the amount has risen. I have made several phone calls asking him for a detailed statement of the account, but all I have received is a payment booklet. What is your advice?

Are you sure you’ve been speaking directly to the lawyer? I’m guessing the reason you haven’t gotten a real answer to your question is because you’ve actually been talking to some low-level staffer or paralegal. If you&nbsp;have&nbsp;been talking to the lawyer, there’s a pretty good chance he’s running a small&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/fair-debt-collection-practices-act" target="_blank">debt collections</a>&nbsp;or debt lawsuit machine. If this is the case, he probably gets a piece of whatever he collects. That means he’s out to collect as much as possible, as quickly as he can.

You might consider changing tactics, and see if you can talk to the hospital administrator. Propose giving them $2,000, or whatever reasonable amount you can afford, on the agreement that the hospital accept it as payment in full. Hospitals and doctor’s offices are often some of the easiest folks to work with when it comes to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-snowball-calculator" target="_blank">paying off debt</a>, but people have to be proactive and make an honest, good faith effort to make it happen.

There’s a moral, as well as legal, responsibility involved when it comes to paying off bills or debt, Ronnie. You should always pay what you owe if at all possible.

Salina Area United Way has announced its 2022-2023 funded partners.

Nine local nonprofit community organizations were chosen as funded partners:

“We have been working on returning to Funded Partners for the past year and a half. This is going to make a huge impact on these agencies and the services they provide to our Salina community,” said Claire Ludes, executive director for the Salina Area United Way. “We have steadily increased fundraising for the past 2.5 years I have been executive director and now I believe this return allows us to take it even further and truly support these agencies in all that they do.”

Salina Area United Way will be kicking off the 2022-2023 campaign season with a revamped version of their Campaign Kick-Off Event, United Happy Hour, on Sept. 22 from 4-7 p.m. at United Capital Management of Kansas’s new event space: The Sullivan. Kick-Off is a big annual event for the United Way that kicks off the start of the campaign season, raising dollars for local nonprofit organizations in our community.

This year, thanks to a generous donation by Richard and Sallie Morrison, there will be $25,000 in matching funds to share with the nine funded partners throughout the three-hour United Happy Hour event. This means that when community members attended the event on Sept. 22 and make a donation to the 2022-2023 campaign or turn in their workplace campaign pledge form, their donation will be matched, up to 50 percent, to make an even greater impact on our nine funded partners and the community as a whole.

“We are so grateful for the generosity of both Richard and Sallie Morrison and their dedication to giving back to our local nonprofit organizations, said MacKenzie Morris, director of marketing and grants at Salina Area United Way. “This donation is pivotal to the overall mission of Salina Area United Way’s return to funded partners and the nine incredible nonprofits that it creates huge impact for.”

This year will be the biggest kick-off event to date. United Happy Hour will be a happy hour style event, including music, a cash bar, pizza graciously donated by Gambinos Pizza, a dunk tank competition for Funded Partners to win extra cash for their organization donated by Equity Bank, nonprofit booths set up to learn more about the great work the nine Funded Partners are doing in the community, and a giveaway of Brett Young tickets, donated by The Stiefel Theatre, for attendees at the event.

Salina Area United WaySalina Area United Way has announced its 2022-2023 funded partners.Nine local nonprofit community organizations were chosen as funded partners:• Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina• Ashby House• Prairieland Market• Salina Child Care Association• Central Kansas Mental Health Center• Salina Family YMCA• Child Advocacy &amp; Parenting Services• Pawnee Mental Health Services• Boy Scouts of America Coronado Area Council“We have been working on returning to Funded Partners for the past year and a half. This is going to make a huge impact on these agencies and the services they provide to our Salina community,” said Claire Ludes, executive director for the Salina Area United Way. “We have steadily increased fundraising for the past 2.5 years I have been executive director and now I believe this return allows us to take it even further and truly support these agencies in all that they do.”Salina Area United Way will be kicking off the 2022-2023 campaign season with a revamped version of their Campaign Kick-Off Event, United Happy Hour, on Sept. 22 from 4-7 p.m. at United Capital Management of Kansas’s new event space: The Sullivan. Kick-Off is a big annual event for the United Way that kicks off the start of the campaign season, raising dollars for local nonprofit organizations in our community.This year, thanks to a generous donation by Richard and Sallie Morrison, there will be $25,000 in matching funds to share with the nine funded partners throughout the three-hour United Happy Hour event. This means that when community members attended the event on Sept. 22 and make a donation to the 2022-2023 campaign or turn in their workplace campaign pledge form, their donation will be matched, up to 50 percent, to make an even greater impact on our nine funded partners and the community as a whole.“We are so grateful for the generosity of both Richard and Sallie Morrison and their dedication to giving back to our local nonprofit organizations, said MacKenzie Morris, director of marketing and grants at Salina Area United Way. “This donation is pivotal to the overall mission of Salina Area United Way’s return to funded partners and the nine incredible nonprofits that it creates huge impact for.”This year will be the biggest kick-off event to date.
