TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory update due to blue-green algae. 

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. If you, or your dog, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water. Suspected HAB-related health incidents, whether human or animal, regardless of season, should be reported at kdhe.ks.gov/1163.

Lovewell Lake (Reservoir), Jewell County 

School Street Pond (Rose Hill), Butler County (Elevated August 4)

South Lake (Overland Park), Johnson County 

Augusta Santa Fe Lake, Butler County (Lowered August 4)

Melvern Outlet River Pond, Osage County (Lowered August 4)

The state of Kansas recognizes three advisory levels: 

A Hazard status indicates that a harmful algal bloom is present, and extreme conditions exist.  

Signage should be posted at all public access locations.

It is recommended that either a portion of the lake or the entire lake or zone, be closed to the public.

In some cases, the adjacent land should be closed as well. Actual setback distances will be determined on a site-specific basis, if necessary.

When partial closures (i.e., beach or cove) are issued, the remaining lake or zone area will carry a warning status.

A Warning status indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure.  Contact with the waterbody should be avoided. 

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful.

Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.  

Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.  

Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.  

If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.  

Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.  

A Watch status means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water. 

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken: 

Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water. 

Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms. 

Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact. 

Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only. 

Advisories are Lifted when cell densities and toxin concentrations dissipate to levels below the Watch thresholds.

KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.  

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

August 1, 1983 marked an important milestone for Ken and Alice Robson, as they began their new adventure as owners of the former Callie's Card Corner in downtown Ellsworth. Together with the former owners Loren and Callie Reber and other previous owners, the store has been an anchor and a cornerstone of excellent customer service for 90 years.

On August 4th and 5th, Ken and Alice invite the community and its loyal customers to celebrate forty years of Robson's Card &amp; Gift, in conjunction with the downtown celebration <a href="https://www.growellsworthcounty.com/events">Vintage to Vibrant</a>. The celebration will begin on Friday, August 4 at 8 a.m. with an old tradition of sidewalk sales, along with refreshments and must-have grab bags and bargains. The celebration will continue on Saturday, August 5 at 9 a.m., and until closing at 3 p.m.

In forty years, Ken and Alice could write the book on a changing community and retail, economic challenges, customer service, and how to remain ever-adapting and flexible. The store itself could write a chapter, as it grew from cards and gifts to a Gold Crown Hallmark, office supplies, and a loyal fanbase of Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments.

"Ken and Alice are the very picture of downtown retail at is best. They go above and beyond at every single request, and are the very heart and soul of our community. In addition to their storefront, they are also avid community supporters, from events to volunteering, to even being the cheerleader everyone needs on their team," said Stacie Schmidt, Executive Director of Grow Ellsworth County.

Ken and Alice celebrate forty years along with a desire to pass the torch to the next owner, to extend the life beyond 40 years and continue the many traditions they have enjoyed. "We are grateful for the supportive community we have served, but are looking forward to retirement and spending more time with our grandchildren. You will also hear the incredible sounds of the largest bomb range in the Air National Guard.

The Air National Guard is planning a day full of aerial gunnery demonstrations which will include both fighter and bomber aircraft.

Update on Kan. Wildlife and Parks Commission Activities, Upcoming Meeting

Wichita, Kan. – While there is no deadline to apply for PACT Act-related benefits, there is urgency. Most Veterans and survivors who&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/resources/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits/" target="_blank">apply</a>&nbsp;for benefits or submit an “<a href="https://www.va.gov/resources/your-intent-to-file-a-va-claim/" target="_blank">Intent to File</a>” by August 9, if granted, will have their benefits backdated to August 10th of last year – the day President Biden signed the PACT Act into law.

According to VA’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/vetdata/veteran_population.asp" target="_blank">National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics</a>, there are roughly 186,000 Veterans living in the state of Kansas. Currently, 52,080 Veterans are receiving service-connected compensation from the federal government, leaving 134,000 who may be eligible for similar benefits.

"Along with outreach assets from the Eastern Kansas VA Health Care System, the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), and our state-level partners from the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs (KCVAO), we have trekked across Kansas educating Veterans and survivors on potential eligibility for new health care and benefits,” said Michael Payne, CEO and Medical Center Director of Wichita’s Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center. “The time for Veterans to act is now, and we will not rest until every one of them gets what they’ve earned.”

The economic impact of service-connected compensation cannot be understated.

The Salina Police Department is investigating a Kansas felon on new charges of a chase and arrest.

Just after&nbsp;6:16 p.m. Thursday, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a black 2000 Plymouth Neon in the 800 block of Osage Avenue. The owner of the vehicle, Kyle Montgomery AKA"Kyle Farley",&nbsp; had two Salina Municipal Court warrants and a Saline County felony warrant for his arrest, according to Salina Police Sgt. Kyle Tonniges.&nbsp;

The vehicle failed to stop, initiating a pursuit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The pursuit lasted approximately five minutes and reached speeds of 70 mph. The suspect traveled south on Ninth Street where he attempted an unsuccessful turn west onto Magnolia Road. In the process, the suspect's Plymouth vehicle struck a blue 2019 Jeep Wrangler that was eastbound on Magnolia.&nbsp;

He fled from the vehicle on foot and ran to Freddy’s, 2420 S. Ninth.&nbsp; Officers chased him and deployed their TASER in an attempt to effect an arrest.

"The TASER was ineffective, but officers were able to arrest Kyle eventually," Tonniges said. 

Montgomery is charged with fleeing and eluding, interference with law enforcement, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, damage to property, no proof of insurance, reckless driving, improper driving on a laned roadway, fail to signal, failure to stop at a stop sign, littering, and driving while suspended.&nbsp;

 Six local artists among Art is Ageless® masterpiece level winners

"The Big First" District Congressman Tracey Mann was back in Kansas this week completeing his schedule of town halls in 60 Kanas counties.

Mann's well-attended Wednesday town hall event in Salina was held in the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce annex, 120 W. Ash, on Wednesday.

Mann spoke about the <a href="https://www.agriculture.senate.gov/farm-bill">ongoing farm bill talks</a>, the listing of the Lesser Prairie-Chicken as an endangered species, special education funding, school lunches, the food supply, and protecting public lands and the current drought.

"In a good farm bill, the process is the ag committee goes and has listening sessions," Mann said. "You want to hear from producers and stakeholders in a really robust fashion. There's probably more engagement than in any other bill in Congress, you could argue."

The current farm bill expires Sept. 30. The "Big First District" stretches west from Lawrence to the Colorado border and is the third largest agriculture producer of the country's 435 total Congressional districts.

Mann, who serves on the House Agriculture Committee and comes from a farming family in Quinter, said "It's important that we get this right. It's important that we get it right for agriculture and for rural America.

Mann has hosted several listening sessions including one in Manhattan in May with U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn 'GT' Thompson (PA-15).

“We came together for a listening session because we care about American agriculture, we care about getting ag policy right, and we want to see American farmers, ranchers, and producers thrive,” said Rep. Mann. “We had people with many different perspectives in attendance – people who prioritize Title 1 and people who prioritize Title 12, people who care about row crops and people who care about livestock, representatives from commodity groups, and representatives from trade associations." 

The 1933 farm bill, which was focused almost exclusively on farmers, now only represents a portion of today’s farm bill. The farm bill as we know it is aimed at funding agriculture programs packaged under a single bill with “titles” addressing specific areas.

Though the titles vary from bill to bill, the 2018 farm bill included 12 that covered commodities, conservation, trade, nutrition, credit, rural development, research, extension and related matters, forestry, energy, horticulture, crop insurance, and a catchall for miscellaneous matters.&lt;

While the list is expansive, 99 percent of farm bill spending is currently dedicated to nutrition, commodities, crop insurance, and conservation. Most has gone toward the nutrition component, primarily through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps vulnerable families purchase healthy food.

"Without a doubt, the most important part of the Farm Bill process is hearing from our farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers," said Chairman Thompson. "The feedback we receive is necessary for crafting an effective Farm Bill. I'd like to thank Congressman Mann for being a great agriculture advocate and for bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders to learn more about the needs of rural Kansans."

Members of the public voiced their concern with the timeline surrouding this year's farm bill, "We're being told the base drafting of the text will be released later this month, early next," Mann Said. Amendments are likely to be considered by the Agriculture Committee in September after Congress returns from its summer recess. 

For Mann and many Kansas ag producers, the biggest interest and priority in the farm bill is crop insurance.

"I just think it's such an important risk management tool. Wheat harvest this year was a bad crop. Some areas were great. We had a really good April, May, and June but not enough moisture for a good stand," Mann said.

Town hall attendees voiced their concerns over the role back of free school lunches, their voices not being represented in Washington, motorcyclist rights being restricted and foreign governments acquiring farm land in Kansas.

Saline County Jail Bookings August 4

SALINA —Law enforcement authorities are investigating vandalism at Oakdale Park, 730 Oakdale Drive and the Eric Stein Stage, according to a statement from Salina Police.

The damage occurred between July 31 and August 1.

The police are following leads and if you have any additional information or recognize any of these vandals. Police investigating vandalism at Oakdale Park

On Monday, 7/24/2023, Officers with the Salina Police Department were dispatched to Dillon’s at 1235 E. Cloud St., Salina, in regards to a theft.

Employees reported between 9:30 A.M. and 10:30 A.M. a subject entered the store and attempted to shoplift various meat products valued at nearly $400. The subject was described as a black male wearing a hat, face mask and carrying a cane. The subject was recognized by employees who have witnessed him commit multiple meat thefts in the past.

NWS: Severe storms possible tonight across central Kansas 

Twenty hay bales and a hay trailer were destroyed in a Wednesday morning fire in Saline County.&nbsp;

Deputies and firefighters from Rural Fire Districts No. 3 and 7 were sent to the 4,000 block of W. Pleasant Hill Road at 10:12 a.m. Wednesday for the report of a hay trailer on fire.&nbsp;

"The semi-tractor trailer with 20 large round hay bales on top went underneath a metal gated archway," Soldan said. "The bales pushed the archway up into the powerlines above it and started the fire on the back of the truck."

All 20 hay bales were destroyed amounting to a loss of $2,000. The truck pulling the trailer, a grey 95 Freightliner, was also destroyed beyond repair with a total of $20,000 in damage.&nbsp;

A 72-year-old male from Tescott was driving the truck and trailer.

There were no injuries related to the accident.&nbsp;
