In the current cattle market, K-State cattle experts offer considerations for selling or retaining cows

MANHATTAN, Kan. — For many, investing in the stock market is a long-term retirement strategy that takes discipline to avoid reacting to changes in the market.

In much the same way, making a profit in the cattle business requires a long-term approach, said the experts at Kansas State Univeristy’s Beef Cattle Institue on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/08/04/cattle-inventory-and-selling-strategies/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast.

“Having a strategy to deal with fluctuating prices is much better than reacting; it is much like the stock market in that you don’t want to buy in or buy out on a whim,” said K-State veterinarian Brad White.

White’s observation is related to the July USDA report that showed beef cow numbers at 29.4 million head, which is down 2.6% compared to the same time last year, and the cattle and calves total inventory was 95.9 million head, which is down 2.7% from the previous year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“What I take from this report is that we haven’t bottomed out yet with the inventory numbers because people are still liquidating the herd,” said Dustin Pendel, K-State agricultural economist. “As the herds continue to shrink, cattle prices are going to stay high a little longer and possibly go a little bit higher.”

From a cattle producer’s perspective, there are choices to make. K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster said, “As a producer, I may want to retain the four- to eight-year-old cows that are going to produce the best calves that I can sell into a market with high calf prices.”

White agreed and added that heifers retained can contribute to the financial success of the herd, but it will take a longer period of time compared to cows.

“Once we start saving heifers, it is a long-term investment because it takes months before they can contribute offspring to the herd,” White said.

One factor that influences the liquidity of the cattle market is drought, Lancaster said.

“If you are in an area that has been getting rain, you may be able to keep extra heifers and cows that can add to the herd, but if you are experiencing drought then there will be feed costs that need to be accounted for in the decision to keep or sell,” Lancaster said.

White called that knowing the “resource availability.”

“If I have the resources available, I can be more selective about which females I keep and I can sell the ones I don’t want at a reasonable price,” White said.

Along with the production cycle, Pendell said the consumer demand also can influence cattle prices.

“We are starting to see that the consumer beef demand is softening as consumers were not willing to pay as much for their beef in June as they did in May,” Pendell said. “Eventually that will translate down to cattle prices along with the influences of international trade.”

The K-State experts agreed that producers need to think about the marketing opportunities for the long term.

“Every operation is going to be different depending on where you are located in respect to drought; prices are going to be high for the foreseeable future, so you need to figure out where those marketing opportunities are and then run with them,” Pendell said.

Salina Symphony announces youth education program auditions

The Salina Art Center Cinema held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and announced the re-opening of the cinema on Friday in partnership with the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

"Overall the event was a tremendous success," said Salina Art Center Executive Director Misty Serene. "We had over 100 people come in and sit and hang out in our new seats. And ticket sales were fantastic for the entire weekend. We feel very blessed to be in this community."

The weekend schedule consisted of a ribbon-cutting event at 3 p.m. Friday followed by the first film shown in the new space, Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City".&nbsp;

Saturday's cinema schedule was dominated by films directed by Anderson. Films included another showing of "Asteroid City", "Royal Tenenbaums", and "Rushmore."

Construction on the cinema remodel began in June and consisted of updating its chairs and installing a state-of-the-art digital projector and sound system.&nbsp;

"With these new updates, we can really become the cinema for the next generation," Serene said. "We show great films we have in the remodel. We have 80 seats, luxury seating&nbsp; expereince and all of the things that you would expect in a normal theater but in a much smaller more intimate setting." 

Serene said films typically shown at the cinema include first-run independent films,&nbsp; because according to Serene that is the fastest-growing contemporary art film globally.

" I can think of at least three film projects happening right now within a 60-mile radius of Salina," Serene said. "It's really exciting to see people getting out there and making films."

Salina Art Center Cinema re-opens to the public after building remodel

The 2023 Tri-Rivers Fair is scheduled for August 8-12, with opportunities for local folks to showcase their efforts, motivated by the fair theme, “Sew It, Grow It, Show It.” Opportunities extend beyond clothing and garden produce, with Saturday, July 15 as a first deadline for several opportunities to participate.

“Where the rodeo brought participants in from other communities, we are transitioning to events that involve more local people,” Carl Garten, Tri-Rivers Fair Board President, said. “Those are the kind of things we are hoping in the future to do more, and get more local people involved in the fair.”

The Tri- Rivers Fair is scheduled for August 8-12 at the Saline County Expo Center. There will be a parade, commercial vendor fair and community showcase.

The Tri-Rivers Fair parade, set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8 on Santa Fe, from Elm to Prescott.&nbsp;

Commercial vendors can set up a booth starting on Wednesday, Aug. 9 through Saturday, Aug. 12 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall during the 2023 Tri-Rivers Fair. A contract, located on the Tri-Rivers Fair website, <a href="http://www.tririversfair.org">www.tririversfair.org</a>, must be completed and returned postmarked Saturday, July 15 with the appropriate fee.

The commercial vendor fair hours will be, Wednesday 6-9 p.m.; Thursday and Friday 2-9 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The community showcase, from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall, showcases talent from around the area. The line-up features dance ensembles, vocal and instrumental ensembles and other talents. Community members interested in being a part of that line-up must register by Saturday, July 15.

“The entertainment options involve the local community,” Garten said. “The demolition derby is an opportunity to smash their cars up, the cornhole tournament involves local teams participating, the art show is local artists and WolfFest involves local folks and their dogs. It’s not just for adults, or 4-H youth, but there are opportunities for general you. Anybody can participate in the Tri-Rivers Fair.”

According to Garten, the Tri-Rivers Fair is an opportunity for 4-H youth to exhibit the work they have accomplished over the past year, and it is an opportunity for the general public to showcase what they are doing in their life. EXHIBITS: Opportunities for local participation gear up on Tuesday, Aug. 8, with open class exhibits and 4-H conference judging. 4-H conference judging is not open to the public and information for 4-H families can be received from the Central Kansas District Extension Office in Salina.

Open class exhibits are open to the public, and those folks in Saline County who have flower and vegetable gardens have an earlier entry time than the other divisions of exhibits. Floriculture and horticulture divisions must be entered between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Tuesday,

 Aug. 8, with entry through the southwest door of Kenwood Hall at the Saline County Expo Center. Other exhibits, including baked goods, preserved foods, photography, quilts, handcrafts, clothing, woodworking, antiques, ceramics, fine art youth projects and more, can be checked in for exhibit between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Community members who choose to exhibit also have an opportunity to receive feedback on their exhibits, as exhibits in open class are judged and premium money is awarded to entires earning first, second and third place awards. A best of show is also awarded in each division. Also in Kenwood Hall, community members can support 4-H scholarships by bidding on silent auction items. Bidding starts at 1 p.m. on Thursday and ends at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

4-H exhibits will be open to the public starting on Wednesday, Aug. 9 through Saturday, Aug. 12. Exhibits include similar projects as open class exhibits, and include 4-H livestock exhibits. Livestock shows will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 9 with poultry judging at 10 a.m. in Barn #1 and 4-H bucket calf and 4-H dairy goats at 2:30 p.m. in Ag Hall. Thursday, Aug. 10 includes the 4-H beef show at 9 a.m. in Ag Hall; the 4-H meat goat show at 2 p.m. in Barn #2; the 4-H sheep show at 4 p.m. in Barn #2 and the 4-H swine show at 5:30 p.m. in Barn #2.

KIDS’ DAY: Thursday, Aug. 10 offers entertainment just for kids, including an afternoon storytime, the kids pedal tractor pull and the second annual touch-a-truck event. All events are free to attend.

Storytime at the Fair will be hosted by the Saline Public Library at 3 p.m. in the grassy area by the south circle drive of Tony’s Pizza Event Center.

The kids pedal tractor pull starts with registration at 5:45 p.m. outside, on the south side of Tony’s Pizza Event Center. Families can register their children, ages 4-12, to show off their leg muscles by pedaling as far as they can in a kids pedal tractor. The pull starts at 6:30 p.m. with the top three pulls qualifying for the Kansas State Fair’s pedal tractor pull.

In the west parking lot of Tony’s Pizza Event Center, kids can climb into a tractor, a dump truck and multiple other large vehicles at the second annual touch-a-truck event from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10. Trucks expected to be in the parking lot include a semi-truck, a field sprayer, a John Deere tractor, a Kabota tractor, emergency response vehicles, a loader tractor, a dump truck, a road grater, a trash truck and more.

FRIDAY VARIETY: Friday, Aug. 11 entertainment launches in the morning at 10 a.m. with a Show and Sell Artist Showcase until 8 p.m. in the lobby of the Tony’s Pizza Event Center. Nine artists from Saline County and the surrounding counties were selected to showcase and sell fine arts to the public. The work for sale includes epoxy art, jewelry, wood burning, woodworking, custom prints, framed and non-framed art work, photography and more. The Show and Sell Artist Showcase will run for two days, with the same hours on Saturday, Aug. 12 Children ages two to seven have an opportunity to show livestock during the Pee Wee Showmanship event at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11 in Barn #2. Interested participants may borrow a livestock animal from a livestock exhibitor to show, and all participants will receive a ribbon for showing. A “consent and release” form must be completed prior to showing. No open-toed shoes should be worn when showing in the Pee Wee Showmanship event.

Friday evening is for cornhole, as the Tri-Rivers Fair partners with Salina Cornhole to put on the second annual cornhole tournament at the fair. The tournament will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the horse warm-up arena south of Ag Hall and involve two divisions of tournament brackets: amateurs and competitive. Entry fees are $50 per team for the double elimination tournament, with the top three teams earning a percentage of the registration fees and parts of a $1,000 added payout. A beer garden will be provided during the tournament, and coolers will be admitted for an additional fee.

WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT: Daytime activity on Saturday, Aug. 12 offers spectator opportunity with the Kansas Tractor Club showcasing antique tractors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 south of the Tony’s Pizza Event Center and the Salina Kennel Club showcasing canine obedience and agility skills from 1-5 p.m. in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Center inside the Tony’s Pizza Event Center.

Evening activities straddles two locations. The Tri-Rivers Fair draft horse pull will start at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12 in Ag Hall at the Saline County Expo Center. Tickets are available at the gate for $7 for adults; and $4 for children ages 6-12.

The second annual demolition derby at the Salina Speedway will also begin at 7 p.m. with gates open at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12. Pits will open at 3 p.m.

Tickets are available at the game for $10 for adults; and $4 for children ages 6-12, but you don’t have to wait until Saturday to get your tickets. Tickets may be purchased at the fair office the week of the fair by cash or check only.

 </figure> The 2023 Tri-Rivers Fair is scheduled for August 8-12, with opportunities for local folks to showcase their efforts, motivated by the fair theme, “Sew It, Grow It, Show It.” Opportunities extend beyond clothing and garden produce, with Saturday, July 15 as a first deadline for several opportunities to participate.“Where the rodeo brought participants in from other communities, we are transitioning to events that involve more local people,” Carl Garten, Tri-Rivers Fair Board President, said. “Those are the kind of things we are hoping in the future to do more, and get more local people involved in the fair.”The Tri- Rivers Fair is scheduled for August 8-12 at the Saline County Expo Center. Floriculture and horticulture divisions must be entered between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, with entry through the southwest door of Kenwood Hall at the Saline County Expo Center. Other exhibits, including baked goods, preserved foods, photography, quilts, handcrafts, clothing, woodworking, antiques, ceramics, fine art youth projects and more, can be checked in for exhibit between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9.Community members who choose to exhibit also have an opportunity to receive feedback on their exhibits, as exhibits in open class are judged and premium money is awarded to entires earning first, second and third place awards. A best of show is also awarded in each division. Thursday, Aug. 10 includes the 4-H beef show at 9 a.m. in Ag Hall; the 4-H meat goat show at 2 p.m. in Barn #2; the 4-H sheep show at 4 p.m. in Barn #2 and the 4-H swine show at 5:30 p.m. in Barn #2.KIDS’ DAY: Thursday, Aug. 10 offers entertainment just for kids, including an afternoon storytime, the kids pedal tractor pull and the second annual touch-a-truck event. All events are free to attend.Storytime at the Fair will be hosted by the Saline Public Library at 3 p.m. in the grassy area by the south circle drive of Tony’s Pizza Event Center.The kids pedal tractor pull starts with registration at 5:45 p.m. outside, on the south side of Tony’s Pizza Event Center. Families can register their children, ages 4-12, to show off their leg muscles by pedaling as far as they can in a kids pedal tractor. The pull starts at 6:30 p.m. with the top three pulls qualifying for the Kansas State Fair’s pedal tractor pull.In the west parking lot of Tony’s Pizza Event Center, kids can climb into a tractor, a dump truck and multiple other large vehicles at the second annual touch-a-truck event from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10. Trucks expected to be in the parking lot include a semi-truck, a field sprayer, a John Deere tractor, a Kabota tractor, emergency response vehicles, a loader tractor, a dump truck, a road grater, a trash truck and more.FRIDAY VARIETY: Friday, Aug. 11 entertainment launches in the morning at 10 a.m. with a Show and Sell Artist Showcase until 8 p.m. in the lobby of the Tony’s Pizza Event Center. Nine artists from Saline County and the surrounding counties were selected to showcase and sell fine arts to the public. The work for sale includes epoxy art, jewelry, wood burning, woodworking, custom prints, framed and non-framed art work, photography and more. The Show and Sell Artist Showcase will run for two days, with the same hours on Saturday, Aug. 12 Children ages two to seven have an opportunity to show livestock during the Pee Wee Showmanship event at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11 in Barn #2. Interested participants may borrow a livestock animal from a livestock exhibitor to show, and all participants will receive a ribbon for showing. A “consent and release” form must be completed prior to showing. No open-toed shoes should be worn when showing in the Pee Wee Showmanship event.Friday evening is for cornhole, as the Tri-Rivers Fair partners with Salina Cornhole to put on the second annual cornhole tournament at the fair. The tournament will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the horse warm-up arena south of Ag Hall and involve two divisions of tournament brackets: amateurs and competitive. Entry fees are $50 per team for the double elimination tournament, with the top three teams earning a percentage of the registration fees and parts of a $1,000 added payout. A beer garden will be provided during the tournament, and coolers will be admitted for an additional fee.WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT: Daytime activity on Saturday, Aug. 12 offers spectator opportunity with the Kansas Tractor Club showcasing antique tractors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. south of the Tony’s Pizza Event Center and the Salina Kennel Club showcasing canine obedience and agility skills from 1-5 p.m. in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Center inside the Tony’s Pizza Event Center.Evening activities straddles two locations. ‘Sew It, Grow It, Show It’ Tri-Rivers Fair Information

One of the region’s leading families has gifted Kansas Wesleyan $1.5 million in support of the university’s newest initiative, the Community Resilience Hub. It comes from the family of Joyce Vanier Hale, presented by Mollie Hale Carter, executive chairman of FirstSun and Sunflower Bank.

The gift was announced Wednesday at a ceremony in KWU’s Hauptli Student Center that included campus leadership, members of the Hale family and Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. The family’s generosity will be recognized in the naming of the first full-time KWU faculty position associated with the Hub as the H.D. “Joe” Hale Chair of Regenerative Agriculture.&nbsp;

“Farming and ranching have always been a big part of my family’s identity,” said Carter. “Mother wanted to find a way to honor my father’s love of farming. We believe that, to carry on that legacy, it is vital to be good stewards of the land and preserve it for future generations. This will require new, innovative thinking, just like the Community Resilience Hub. We believe this work will enrich the lives of Kansans and help ensure that agriculture remains a viable, rewarding industry for future generations.”

Joyce Hale passed away in late June. She owned Cedar Creek Ranch near Manhattan, Kan., which produced championship Hereford cattle, and was a former chair of Sunflower Bank, among other accomplishments.

The gift continues significant support from the family in recent years. In fact, the lobby of Peters Science Hall — renovated in 2021 — bears the name of Hale’s father, J.J. Vanier, in recognition of similar support.

The Vanier, Hale and Nelson family connections to Kansas wheat farming and milling span generations. After Joe and Joyce Hale married in 1951, Joe joined the Vanier family business, Western Star Mill Co., as VP.

ADM Milling acquired Western Star in the early ’70s, and Joe was named president not long after. He became company chairman in 1989 and retired in 1996, but not before transforming ADM into a global leader in the flour and grain milling industry. His lifelong dedication to the industry was evident in his involvement in several industry organizations.

The Hales’ contributions through the years include scholarship funding, supporting the launch of online classes and campuswide technology infrastructure upgrades, and now, funding a truly Kansas-focused approach to education.

“We are truly grateful for the Hale family’s commitment,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, KWU president. “Their philanthropic legacy in the state is well-known. They care about Kansas and its people. The Community Resilience Hub’s focus on our home state, both in education and in real-world results, will help improve the future right here in Kansas. This gift helps make that future possible.”

The CRH kicked off in 2021 and has seen a great deal of movement in recent months, including inclusion in a grant to help create a food corridor between Salina and Wichita. It also recently announced an educational partnership with Rodale Institute, a worldwide leader in regenerative organic farming, and JRI Hospitality/Quail Creek Family Farms.

“Kansans have always been leaders and innovators,” said Secretary Beam. “The Community Resilience Hub is the latest in a long line of great examples of that, and I look forward to seeing it make a difference in the months and years to come.”

Salina Police Department&nbsp; Chief CJ Wise and the Salina Police Department extend our condolences to the family, friends, and members of the Fairway Police Department.

Fairway (KS) Police Officer Jonah Oswald, 29 years of age, has died as a result of injuries sustained in a shooting in Mission, Kansas, that occurred on Sunday.  Officer Oswald was a 4-year veteran of the Fairway Police Department.  

Fairway Chief of Police J.P. Thurlo has issued the following statement about the passing of Officer Oswald.

“I am heartbroken at the tragic loss of Officer Jonah Oswald, who made the ultimate sacrifice while carrying out his oath to serve and protect. Officer Oswald was an integral part of our team and made significant contributions to our department and to the Fairway community. We will remember him as a warm-hearted individual whose hard work and passion touched the lives of many.

On behalf of the entire Fairway Police Department, and the City of Fairway, I extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Officer Oswald’s family and friends. We recognize that their loss is immeasurable, and our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Officer Oswald leaves behind a wife and two young children. The Oswald family has asked for privacy at this time and is appreciative of the support being shown to them. 

I continue to be grateful for the outpouring of support for the Fairway Police Department.”

Saline County Booking Activity, Aug. 8

Law enforcement authorities are investigating a DUI accident that occurred over the weekend in Salina involving a local woman.

Just after midnight Sunday morning police responded to an accident in the 900 block E. Republic Avenue in Salina, according to Salina Police Sgt. Kyle Tonniges.&nbsp;

When officers arrived, they found a 2012 GMC Terrain, driven by&nbsp;L'laena Jones, 20, Salina.&nbsp; "She was driving her terrain west on Republic and apparently it was raining at the time and she said her wipers began to malfunction," Tonniges said. "She veered over and struck a black Ford F-150 pickup that was parked on the side of the street."&nbsp;

When officers spoke with Jones about the accident they suspected she was under the influence. A field sobriety test was conducted and she was subsequently arrested for DUI.

Tonniges said officers also discovered a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jones was arrested with requested charges including, DUI, the possession of alcohol by a minor possession of marijuana possession of drug paraphernalia, and inattentive driving.

🎙King in the Community: Claire Ludes, Salina Area United Way

At a time when the number of early childhood care and education professionals does not meet demand, Kansas State University researchers and professional staff are working to rebuild the state's workforce. The Kansas Department for Children and Families has awarded more than $5 million in initial funding for a collaborative project involving K-State. The project will implement a multi-level career pathway, which serves as a tool and aspirational plan to guide current and interested members of the early childhood workforce to advancement opportunities. The career pathway is a primary component of the workforce development goal of the state's&nbsp;<a href="https://kschildrenscabinet.org/all-in-for-kansas-kids/strategic-plan/goal-6-workforce/">All In For Kansas Kids</a>strategic plan. The plan was developed with funding through the Preschool Development Grant to Kansas to the Kansas Children's Cabinet and Trust Fund. Bronwyn Fees, K-State professor of applied human sciences, serves as the principal investigator for Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities, or KCCTO, which is the organization that received the funding. KCCTO is&nbsp;a K-State-sponsored project that provides professional development and technical assistance to early childhood professionals across Kansas. The multiphase, multiyear plan coordinates with partnering agencies, organizations, associations, and secondary and post-secondary institutions to implement the competency-based career pathway. The project's first phase included assembling a steering committee representing a breadth and depth of expertise in early childhood care and education systems to develop an implementation plan for the career pathway. K-State's Office of Educational Innovation and Evaluation will evaluate the full implementation. "The early childhood career pathways initiative ensures the state expands the workforce needed to provide quality child care and education," said Fees, who also serves as associate dean for academic and faculty affairs in K-State's College of Health and Human Sciences. She is also a member of the state's Early Childhood Recommendations Panel. The project's second phase is underway and includes gathering industry and partner feedback, launching an awareness campaign, conducting a comprehensive workforce survey, developing a coaching/mentoring system, and engaging our secondary and post-secondary institutions in partnership with the non-credit-bearing professional development partners across the state. "It is essential to support well-trained professionals in early care and education for children and their families to thrive," said Fees. "Our state's economy relies on parents who are confident their children are experiencing the best possible care and education while they are at work or school." The lack of available child care spaces is a national issue that is affecting Kansas families, businesses and local economies. According to&nbsp;<a href="https://ks.childcareaware.org/data-research/">Child Care Aware of Kansas</a>, Kansas has lost 1,952 child care openings since 2021. Additionally, available openings only meet demand 42% of the time. One of the primary barriers to filling these openings, however, is the lack of educators.&nbsp; "By working together with professional organizations and all higher education institutions in the state, individuals entering or already in the early childhood care and education workforce can easily identify how they are progressing," said Fees. "The coordinated training systems ensures a quality, well-trained workforce to meet demand." According to Fees, Kansas is developing an early childhood care and education registry system. The career pathway implementation plan will be coordinated with the development of a registry. Once live, it will allow early childhood care and education professionals to track the professional development courses, college credits earned and identify where they are and opportunities to advance on the career pathway. Patty Peschel, director of Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities, says this program has the potential for significant, positive effects on individuals in early child care careers and the children and families they support. "Whether an individual is new to the workforce, has several years of experience or is degree-seeking, the intent of the career pathway is to respect and acknowledge experience and education while ensuring access to advancement and success," said Peschel. This grant project aligns with the K-State 105 initiative,&nbsp;the university's answer to the call for a comprehensive economic growth and advancement solution for Kansas. The initiative leverages the statewide K-State Research and Extension network to deliver the full breadth of the university's collective knowledge and solution-driven innovation to every Kansan where they live and work. K-State 105 also forges the connections and partnerships that create access to additional expertise within other state institutions and agencies, nonprofits and corporations — all part of an effort to build additional capacities and strengths in each of Kansas' 105 counties.&nbsp;

K-State leads statewide project to rebuild early child care workforce 

KWUGreg Bontrager, one of the region’s most well-known music instructors, will join Kansas Wesleyan’s Music program as an adjunct professor for the upcoming year.&nbsp;

Bontrager retired&nbsp;from full-time teaching&nbsp;at the end of the 2022-23 academic year, following a distinguished career at USDs&nbsp;411(Goessel)&nbsp;and 313&nbsp;(Buhler). He received the Harry Robert Wilson award, giving to Kansas’ outstanding choral director, in 2022, and was a two-time Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) choir chairman. His choirs from Buhler High Schoolreceived 1&nbsp;ratings&nbsp;at the state competition every year from 2009 until his retirement, while the&nbsp;Elbiata&nbsp;Singers (USD 411) earned eight first-place honors in 19 years at the Worlds of Fun Choir Festival.&nbsp;

“Greg joining KWU is yet another tremendous hire,” said Dr. Bill&nbsp;Backlin, interim Music Department chairman. “He is one of the most respected instructors in the region, and his accolades speak for themselves. We are thrilled to have him as a Coyote!”

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to join KWU’s Music department,” said Bontrager. “I am looking forward to working with college students as part of the next steps in my ongoing journey with music.”

Bontrager is also a former recipient of the&nbsp;South Central&nbsp;Kansas Music Educators Association (SCKMEA)’s Outstanding High School Teacher Award (2008-09). He served as president of the Kansas Choral Directors Association in 2010.&nbsp;

 </figure>KWUGreg Bontrager, one of the region’s most well-known music instructors, will join Kansas Wesleyan’s Music program as an adjunct professor for the upcoming year.&nbsp;Bontrager retired&nbsp;from full-time teaching&nbsp;at the end of the 2022-23 academic year, following a distinguished career at USDs&nbsp;411(Goessel)&nbsp;and 313&nbsp;(Buhler). He received the Harry Robert Wilson award, giving to Kansas’ outstanding choral director, in 2022, and was a two-time Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) choir chairman. His choirs from Buhler High Schoolreceived 1&nbsp;ratings&nbsp;at the state competition every year from 2009 until his retirement, while the&nbsp;Elbiata&nbsp;Singers (USD 411) earned eight first-place honors in 19 years at the Worlds of Fun Choir Festival.&nbsp;“Greg joining KWU is yet another tremendous hire,” said Dr. Bill&nbsp;Backlin, interim Music Department chairman. “He is one of the most respected instructors in the region, and his accolades speak for themselves. We are thrilled to have him as a Coyote!”“I am thrilled for the opportunity to join KWU’s Music department,” said Bontrager. “I am looking forward to working with college students as part of the next steps in my ongoing journey with music.”Bontrager is also a former recipient of the&nbsp;South Central&nbsp;Kansas Music Educators Association (SCKMEA)’s Outstanding High School Teacher Award (2008-09). In 2015, Colorado theater shooter James Holmes was spared the death penalty in favor of life in prison after a jury in Centennial failed to agree on whether he should be executed for his murderous attack on a packed movie premiere that left 12 people dead.&nbsp;

In 2017, Chicago filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s policy of withholding public safety grants from sanctuary cities, which chose to limit cooperation with government enforcement of immigration laws. (A federal appeals court later ruled that the federal government cannot set new conditions to awarding those grants.) Medical examiners said the remains of a man who’d been killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11 had been identified, nearly 16 years after the attacks.&nbsp;
