Law enforcement authorities investigating a fentanyl overdose death have made an arrest.

On Wednesday, May 10,&nbsp;Officers were sent to the 1500 block of Winona for an individual who had possibly overdosed. Officers located a 25-year-old female victim who was declared deceased on the scene.

Autopsy results showed the cause of death was a fentanyl and methamphetamine overdose. Detectives have been investigating the death and have made an arrest.&nbsp;

On Monday, 26-year-old Paul Converse was arrested for his involvement in the death. Paul was charged with Distribution of a Controlled Substance Causing Great Bodily Harm or Death, Distribution of Fentanyl, Distribution of Methamphetamine, No Drug Tax Stamp, Criminal Use of Weapons, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

The Salina Arts &amp; Humanities Foundation is reminding community members that the application process for projects funded in 2024 through three categories of the Horizons Grants Program is still open&nbsp;

The Lana Jordan Developing Artist Grants and the Organizational Project Grants open for application on Monday with a deadline of Nov. 1, 2023, for projects that will occur during the 2024 grant cycle (Feb. 1-Nov. 30, 2024). These grants support artistic growth and special projects through Saline County’s cultural and nonprofit organizations and practicing artists.

About the grants from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities

Developing Artist Grants&nbsp;(up to $3,000, requiring a 1:2 match) are available to any visual, performing, literary, and interdisciplinary artist who has demonstrated seriousness to an art form. Artists living in Saline County, Kan., for at least one year and who are 18 years or older are eligible to apply.

The purpose of the Developing Artist Grant is to:

●strengthen the ability of artists to build partnerships

●implement a public component to engage the community

Organizational Project Grants&nbsp;(up to $6,000, requiring a 1:1 match) provide support for projects that place the arts at the heart of community development to build community through the arts.

Grants Available from February 1 – November 15 Deadline:&nbsp;4 weeks before the start of the proposed project (6 weeks before the start for FIRST-TIME APPLICANTS) Eligible Applicants: Any individual artists, nonprofit organization, or local governmental unit in Saline County may apply. Individual applicants must have been a resident of Saline County for at least one year before the application due date. Nonprofit organizations must be incorporated and be recognized as tax-exempt by the Internal Revenue Service. Additionally, Horizons Enrichment Grants (up to $1,000) are available on an ongoing basis, with applications submitted four to six weeks before the beginning of the proposed project. Enrichment Grants are open until Nov. 15, 2023, for projects that take place in 2023.

Salina Arts and Humanities reminds public of available Horizons Grants

One person was injured in an accident at approximately 3:37 p.m. Tuesday in Salina.&nbsp;

The Salina Police Department reported a white 2013 Subaru Legacy driven by Cristopher Crank, 83, Salina, made a left-hand turn heading south on Centennial Road from Cloud Street where it hit a blue 2006 Harley Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle.&nbsp;

The motorcycle was driven by Robert Griffith, 48, Salina. Crank made the turn in front of the motorcycle, which caused Griffith to hit Crank.&nbsp;

Griffith was wearing a helmet and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Crank was cited for failure to yield at a stop sign.

Salina motorcyclist injured following accident with vehicle

A suspect is still at large after leading Salina Police officers on a Tuesday morning pursuit.

Beginning at 6:25 AM on Tuesday, the Police Department received alerts from two license plate readers regarding a stolen vehicle that was driving around town.

The vehicle was described as a purple 2006 Chevrolet HHR, which was reported stolen out of Hastings, Nebraska.

An officer located the vehicle turning west onto Crawford Street from Broadway Avenue. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 1200 block of W. Crawford, but the vehicle fled.

&nbsp;The pursuit, which lasted three minutes, took place on S. Hancock Street and through the neighborhoods near Sunset Park before stopping within the park.

During the pursuit, speeds exceeded 60 mph. The driver fled on foot and was not located. Salina Police Sergeant Tonniges said this afternoon that drugs were also located in the vehicle.

"Officers have developed a suspect and have requested warrants for his arrest for Felony Flee and Elude, Driving While Suspended, Failure to Yield at a Stop Sign, Speeding, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia," Tonniges said.&nbsp;

LAWRENCE — As a new space race heats up, two researchers from Kansas Geological Survey and their colleagues have proposed a new scientific subfield: planetary geoarchaeology, the study of how cultural and natural processes on Earth’s moon, on Mars, and across the solar system may be altering, preserving or destroying the material record of space exploration.

“Until recently, we might consider the material left behind during the space race of the mid-20th&nbsp;century as relatively safe,” said Justin Holcomb, postdoctoral researcher at Kansas Geological Survey, based at the University of Kansas, and lead author on a&nbsp;<a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/gea.21966">new paper</a>&nbsp;introducing the concept of planetary geoarchaeology in the journal Geoarchaeology. “However, the material record that currently exists on the moon is rapidly becoming at risk of being destroyed if proper attention isn’t paid during the new space era.”

Since the advent of space exploration, humans have launched more than 6,700 satellites and spacecraft from countries around the globe, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists. The United States alone accounts for more than 4,500 civil, commercial, governmental and military satellites.

“We’re trying to draw attention to the preservation, study and documentation of space heritage because I do think there’s a risk to this heritage on the moon,” Holcomb said. 

“The United States is trying to get boots on the moon again, and China is as well. We’ve already had at least four countries accidentally crash into the moon recently. There are a lot of accidental crashes and not a lot of protections right now.”

Holcomb began considering the idea of planetary geoarchaeology during the COVID-19 lockdown. Applying geoarchaeological tools and methods to the movement of people into space and the solar system is a natural extension of the study of human migration on Earth, the focus of the ODYSSEY Archaeological Research Program housed at the KGS and directed by Holcomb’s co-author, Rolfe Mandel, KGS senior scientist and University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Anthropology.

“Human migration out of Africa may have occurred as early as 150,000 years ago, and space travel represents the latest stage of that journey,” Mandel said. “Although the ODYSSEY program is focused on documenting the earliest evidence of people in the Americas, the next frontier for similar research will be in space.”

How planetary geoarchaeologists will determine whether an item is worth preserving is an open question.

“We feel that all material currently existing on extraterrestrial surfaces is space heritage and worthy of protection,” Holcomb said. “However, some sites, such as the very first footprints on the moon at Tranquility Base or the first lander on Mars, Viking 1, represent the material footprint of a long history of migration.”

Beyond those “firsts,” sifting through the hundreds of thousands of bits of material currently in orbit or strewn across the surfaces of the moon and Mars — what many call “trash” but Holcomb and his colleagues regard as heritage — will require case-by-case decision making.

“We have to make those decisions all the time with archaeological sites today,” Holcomb said. “The moon has such a limited record now that it’s totally possible to protect all of it. Certainly, we need to protect space heritage related to the Apollo missions, but other countries, too, deserve to have their records protected.”

With resources for protecting space heritage limited, Holcomb and his colleagues advocate for developing systems to track materials left in space.

“We should begin tracking our material record as it continues to expand, both to preserve the earliest record but also to keep a check on our impact on extraterrestrial environments,” he said. “It’s our job as anthropologists and archaeologists to bring issues of heritage to the forefront.”

Beyond the moon, Holcomb wants to see planetary geoarchaeology extend to issues related to exploration and migration to Mars. He points to NASA’s Spirit Rover as an example. The rover became stuck in Martian sand in 2008 and now risks being completely covered by encroaching sand dunes.

“As planetary geoarchaeologists, we can predict when the rover will be buried, talk about what will happen when it’s buried and make sure it’s well documented before it’s lost,” he said. “Planetary scientists are rightfully interested in successful missions, but they seldom think about the material left behind. That’s the way we can work with them.”

Holcomb believes geoarchaeologists should be included in future NASA missions to ensure the protection and safety of space heritage. Meanwhile, geoarchaeologists on Earth can lay the foundation for that work, including advocating for laws to protect and preserve space heritage, studying the effects extraterrestrial ecosystems have on items space missions leave behind and conducting international discussions regarding space heritage preservation and protection issues.

As for being part of a space mission himself?

“I’ll leave that to other geoarchaeologists,” Holcomb said. “There’s plenty to do down here, but I do hope to see an archaeologist in space before it’s all over.”

In space race, Kansas researchers propose new scientific subfield of planetary geoarchaeology

Rolling Hills Zoo Rolling Hills Zoo&nbsp;is excited to&nbsp;welcome&nbsp;the birth of its&nbsp;first Highland calf, born in the early morning hours of August 1st. &nbsp;&nbsp;Mother,&nbsp;Freya,&nbsp;and her male calf are doing well and spending the day bonding under the shade trees in their yard. &nbsp;

The calf, yet to be named, is&nbsp;healthy, curious and brave&nbsp;as he ventures&nbsp;away from mother&nbsp;to check things out. &nbsp;Freya&nbsp;will allow him to get&nbsp;close to her keepers,&nbsp;but if&nbsp;she perceives&nbsp;anything&nbsp;as new or dangerous, she calls to him and he&nbsp;will&nbsp;come&nbsp;running back to her.

Unlike his mother,&nbsp;whose coat is red, the calf’s coat is silver like his father’s, one of the rarest colorations of the Highland cattle.&nbsp;His birth weight is still unknown as the keepers do not want to cause any additional stress to the calf or mother in the extreme heat.&nbsp;While Freya is dealing well with heat, the keepers are giving her some extra TLC&nbsp;and keeping&nbsp;her cool with ice blocks and misters.

Now 5 years old, Freya was pregnant when she arrived at Rolling Hills Zoo from a farm in Missouri. &nbsp;Freya has&nbsp;given birth&nbsp;twicebefore. &nbsp;&nbsp;

A descendant of the native cattle of Scotland, the Highland breed is best known for its survival qualities, hardiness, maternal abilities, reproductive efficiency and longevity. Highlands are medium in size, with cows weighing 900 to 1,300 pounds and bulls 1,500 to 2,000 pounds. They have long, shaggy coats that are most commonly light red, but many other solid colors are also seen.&nbsp;The horns of the Highland cows sweep out and up, while those of the bulls are horizontal with upturned tips.

With their dramatic shaggy coats and long horns, they're instant conversation starters for&nbsp;agritourism&nbsp;operations. Not only has this breed become an international resource for beef production in marginal landscapes, but they also play a crucial role in conservation grazing, contributing to effective range management across the globe.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;public is invited&nbsp;to come and see the zoo’s newest addition, but&nbsp;are asked to&nbsp;keep their voices low,&nbsp;as not&nbsp;to&nbsp;frighten the cow or calf. &nbsp;The Highland cow&nbsp;habitat&nbsp;is located north of the&nbsp;Nature Playground.

One person was injured in an accident just after 8:40 a.m. Monday along Interstate 70 in Saline County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that a 2011 Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by&nbsp;Elesio&nbsp;Acosta, 21, Kansas City, MO. was driving westbound on Interstate 70, when for an unknown reason he rear ended a semi-truck driven by 51- year-old Terry Barrett, 51 Lee Summit, MO.&nbsp;

Both vehicles were traveling westbound near mile marker #258.

Barrett was transported to the hospital by ambulance where he was treated and released.

Melander said Acosta was issued a citation for following too closely.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Local, area students earn academic honors at KU

The Saline County&nbsp;Road&nbsp;and Bridge Department has been recognized with the "Build a Better Mousetrap" award for its innovative safety enhancement of local stop signs and stop ahead signs.

This award, presented by the Federal Highway Administration's National Local Technical Assistance Program Association (NLTAPA), recognizes local transportation departments that have developed creative and effective solutions to common problems.

This year, the Saline County&nbsp;Road&nbsp;and Bridge Department earned the award for its implementation of vertical red reflective taping on stop signs and stop ahead signs. The simple - but effective - enhancement involves adding vertical reflective strips to the signs, making them more visible, thereby significantly enhancing&nbsp;road&nbsp;safety, particularly in low-light conditions and during inclement weather. The solution has proved to be a cost-effective and practical way to increase&nbsp;road&nbsp;safety and prevent accidents.

Rep. Mann protects agricultural producers from 'unconstitutional overreach'

Law enforcement authorities made an arrest following a high-speed pursuit that occurred in south-central Salina on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina Police Sergeant Tonniges told Salina Post this morning, on Monday at approximately 2:49 p.m. an officer observed a gray 2010 Mercury Milan pass his patrol car at an excessive speed while heading southbound in the&nbsp;400 block of South Ohio. Officers were able to clock the vehicle's speed at 76 mph. The speed limit for that section of Ohio Street is 40 mph.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle veered into the left turn lane at the intersection of Ohio Street and Crawford Street and went through both southbound lanes and the center turn lane on Ohio Street.&nbsp;

"The vehicle eventually turned westbound on Magnolia Road and then came to a stop near the intersection of Magnolia Road and Aurora Avenue," Tonniges&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Bernard Baker, 72, Salina.&nbsp;&nbsp; Salina Police officers arrested Baker with the following requested charges:&nbsp;

Shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, Salina Police Officers pursued a vehicle through parts of south-central Salina.

Salina Police Sergeant Tonniges told Salina Post the vehicle has been stopped and spike strips were not used.

Tonniges said two units began pursuing the fleeing vehicle at the intersection of Mellinger Drive and Ohio Street. The vehicle traveled southbound before turning west on Magnolia Road.

Just before 4p.m. Saturday,&nbsp; the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible drowning at the lake, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

Just before 9 a.m. Sunday, a body identified as that of 27-year-old Gabriel Tristen Mora&nbsp; of Salina, Kansas, was recovered from the water and subsequently pronounced deceased by the Ellsworth County Coroner.

The sheriff's office released no additional details early Tuesday.
