NWS: UPDATE severe thunderstorm watches across Kansas

On June&nbsp;22, 2023, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office responded to the&nbsp;2600&nbsp;Blk of&nbsp;N&nbsp;Ohio St.&nbsp;for the report of&nbsp;a vehicle burglary.

Upon arrival, it was learned that between&nbsp;June 21st&nbsp;and June&nbsp;22nd,the lock had been removed from a storage compartment on a service truck and several “Stihl” chainsaws, a leaf blower, and a pole saw were stolen.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Two motorcyclists from Salina were injured and cited for reckless driving on Thursday evening in southeast Salina.&nbsp;

At approximately 7:10 p.m. Thursday Salina Police Department officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of S. Markley Road, near the Berkley Family Recreational Area. SPD had received eyewitness reports of two&nbsp;motorcyclists allegedly driving at excessive speeds while "doing wheelies and donuts in the area."

The motorcyclists were later identified as, Cody McElderry,&nbsp;34, of Salina and Brandon Sanders, 27, of Salina. During the time the pair were driving recklessly, McElderry pulled in front of Sanders causing the motorcycles to collide.&nbsp;

Both drivers were injured. Sanders was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with&nbsp;non-life threatening injuries. Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges said this morning both drivers were cited for reckless driving&nbsp;and&nbsp;Sanders&nbsp;was also cited for no proof of insurance.

Both Sanders and McElderry were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.&nbsp;

Two local motorcyclists cited for reckless driving following accident

Kansas Historical Society William H. Martin of Ottawa, Kansas, is considered to be the best at producing exaggerated postcards. His work featured huge ears of corn and peaches, a giant rabbit being tracked by a car, and pumpkins uprooting a farmstead.

Around the turn of the century Kansas farmers harvested produce bigger than the imagination. Heavy equipment was needed to can giant peaches; a saw was used to cut an ear of corn; and a couple of onions made a wagon load. Picture postcards documented the produce prosperity.

Martin's photography studio began experimenting with trick photography around 1908. He was so successful that he established the Martin Post Card Company in 1909 and reportedly produced seven million cards the next year.

Tall tale postcards required creativity and skill. A photographer took two black-and-white pictures: a wide shot and a close up. The enlarged image would be cut, placed, and glued over the wide shot to create the exaggeration. Headlines such as "Shipping a Few of Our Peaches" and "Harvesting a profitable crop of onions in Kansas" helped further the flight of fancy.

Considered western humor, exaggerated postcards were extremely successful in the Great Plains. Their puffery depicted the fertile farming for which many settlers had come to Kansas. They also showed a sense of humor in dealing with disaster in the state.

When a swarm of grasshoppers descended on Garden City in 1935, Frank D. "Pop" Conard had a vision. The photographer made a montage of giant insects with humans and sold the postcards like "hotcakes." "The idea," Conard said, "came to me after a flight of grasshoppers swarmed into Garden City attracted by the lights, and it was impossible to fill an automobile gasoline tank at filling stations that night. I went home to sleep, but awoke at 3:00 a.m. and all I could think about was grasshoppers. By morning I had the idea of having fun with the grasshoppers, and took my pictures and superimposed the hoppers with humans. I didn't do it for adverse impressions of Kansas, but as an exaggerated joke." A master retoucher, Conard continued to print "hopper whoppers" until his retirement in 1963. Grasshoppers were enlarged to battle a man, fit on the bed of a pickup, and hold up a train.

The picture postcard presented the possibility to inventive photographers to extend the traditional tall-tale to the photographic plate, and what is more, to devise entirely new forms that were possible only through photography. It brought into being visual effects that tall-tale tellers through the centuries had seen only in their fertile imaginations.

"They say pictures don't lie," explained Conard, "but from the sale of these postcards-the fastest selling novelty cards on the market it seems that Kansas people like a little funny, untruth."

“Youth must display leadership skills and hearts for service by organizing events like community service projects, project meetings to share their expertise with younger 4-H members, and other unique efforts,” Maass said.

By Maddy RohrK-State Research and Extension news service Tomato leaves will begin showing signs of leaf-spot diseases soon if they haven’t already, Kansas State University horticulture expert, Ward Upham said. Brown spots on the leaves indicate Septoria leaf and blight.

“Septoria leaf spot usually appears earlier in the season than early blight and produces small dark spots,” Upham said. “Spots made by early blight are much larger and often have a distorted “target” pattern of concentric circles.”

Upham said heavily infected leaves will turn yellow and drop, with older leaves being more susceptible than young leaves because the disease starts at the bottom of the plant and works its way up.

“Mulching, caging, or staking keeps plants off the ground, making them less vulnerable. Better air circulation allows foliage to dry quicker than on plants that are allowed to sprawl,” Upham said.

He recommends mulching to prevent water from splashing and carrying disease spores to the plant.

If you have room, rotate the location of the tomatoes each year to an area that has not had tomatoes or related crops (peppers, potatoes, eggplant) for several years, Upham suggests.

“In situations where these diseases have been a problem in the past, rotation is a good strategy,” Upham said. “Rotation is a good idea even if you have not had problems in the past, although many gardens are too small to make it practical.”

If rotation is not feasible, Upham said fungicides are often helpful. Be sure to cover both upper and lower leaf surfaces, and reapply fungicide if rainfall removes it.

“Plants usually become susceptible when the tomato fruit is about the size of a walnut. Chlorothalonil is a good choice for fruiting plants because it has a zero-day waiting period, meaning that fruit can be harvested once the spray is dry,” Upham explained.

Chlorothalonil can be found in numerous products including Fertilome Broad-Spectrum Landscape and Garden Fungicide, Ortho Garden Disease Control, GardenTech Daconil, Bonide Fungonil and others.

“Be sure to start protecting plants before these diseases are first seen if they have been a problem in the past. It is virtually impossible to control these diseases on heavily infected plants,” Upham said.

The vehicle rear-ended a 2016 Jeep SUV driven by Amanda C. Hoard, 28, Cuba, Kansas.&nbsp; After impact the Mercedes left the road and rolled.

EMS transported Hoard to&nbsp;North Central Kansas Medical Center. West was not injured. Hoard was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

This is day 7 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Triple-digit temperatures mean it certainly feels like the right weather to harvest wheat, but producers and elevators alike are feeling behind schedule. Wheat harvest has shifted west, moving into areas with more extreme drought conditions and more abandoned acres. The wheat acres that remain are coming in below average, but slightly better than expected, while producers adjust their harvesting to address pressure from late-growing weeds.&nbsp;

At the Nebraska border, Neil Bekemeyer started harvest on Monday, June 26, and expects to finish up in the next few days. In Washington County and up into Nebraska, Bekemeyer had hail&nbsp;on Wednesday night, which did not break the hollow wheat stems, but did have a bit of shatter. Wheat fared better than corn, much of which was blown over in the wind.&nbsp;

Bekemeyer was surprised at the yields he was seeing, especially considering the moderate amount of weeds below the canopy. Outstanding varieties included AgriPro Bigfoot and LCS Valiant - with test weights coming in between 58 and 60 pounds per bushel.

In Riley County, Kansas Wheat Commission board member, Nathan Larson has mixed feelings about this year’s wheat crop. He recalled how difficult it was to get his crop in last fall because there was too much moisture to even get into fields. He still thinks there was moisture in the ground to help the wheat grow, but his stands did not fill out with tillers like he had hoped, and he had more weed pressure.&nbsp;

Larson has been delivering Syngenta Monument crop to the local elevator in Leonardville, where test weights have not been great at an average of 58 pounds per bushel. Overall, his crop is averaging 30 bushels per acre.&nbsp;

“It’s a disappointing year, but when you think about southwest Kansas, it’s not a BAD year,” Larson shared.

Back in central Kansas, Del Adcock of Bartlett Grain in Great Bend reported the area is about 10 days to two weeks behind normal. So far, they’ve taken in about 20 percent of the wheat they expect to receive. Test weights are good, averaging 60 pounds per bushel and above, with higher-than-average protein.&nbsp;

Adcock said yields are averaging in the high 20s to low 30s with a range from the teens to 50 bushels per acre. Weeds are everywhere, due to thin stands and the crop maturing later than normal.&nbsp;

Bartlett Grain has a six-county draw radius and Adcock expects to receive about half the wheat of an average year. Sitting on a short line rail line, the facility will send wheat to their core business in Mexico as well as company-owned flour mills in Coffeyville, Kansas, and North Carolina.&nbsp;

There’s little excitement about this year’s crop, as approximately 40 percent of acres were abandoned and yields on the remaining wheat are much lower than average.&nbsp;

“Everybody’s ready to have harvest done and out of the way,” Adcock said.

In the northern part of Barton County, Dean Stoskopf reported even higher abandonment, estimating up to 90 percent of local acres would not be harvested due to extreme drought conditions. Some of Stoskopf’s fields went a year without an inch (or some even a half inch) of moisture. The majority of the county finally moved out of D4 (exceptional) drought, thanks to rains in the past two weeks, but more rain is needed to keep that status at bay.

“If it doesn't rain, we’ll be right back in exceptional drought,” Stoskopf said.&nbsp;

Stoskopf abandoned 80 percent of planted acres and chose not to spray the remaining 200 acres. As a result, he decided to use only a conventional combine, which handles the ever-growing weeds better than his other rotary head. He noted 100-degree weather also helps chop weeds a little bit easier.&nbsp;

Stoskopf cut his first field on Wednesday with final results coming in just above crop insurance estimates at 23 bushels per acre, acceptable 12 percent moisture, excellent test weight at 60 pounds per bushel and good protein at 12.8 percent. The only surviving variety on his operation is PlainsGold Whistler, which benefitted from last-minute moisture as a late-maturing variety.&nbsp;

“What survived isn’t doing too bad, but there aren’t many acres of it,” Stoskopf said. “There just is not a whole lot of wheat coming in.”&nbsp;

Wheat harvest has shifted west, moving into areas with more extreme drought conditions and more abandoned acres. The wheat acres that remain are coming in below average, but slightly better than expected, while producers adjust their harvesting to address pressure from late-growing weeds.&nbsp;At the Nebraska border, Neil Bekemeyer started harvest on Monday, June 26, and expects to finish up in the next few days. In Washington County and up into Nebraska, Bekemeyer had hail&nbsp;on Wednesday night, which did not break the hollow wheat stems, but did have a bit of shatter. Wheat fared better than corn, much of which was blown over in the wind.&nbsp;Bekemeyer was surprised at the yields he was seeing, especially considering the moderate amount of weeds below the canopy. Outstanding varieties included AgriPro Bigfoot and LCS Valiant - with test weights coming in between 58 and 60 pounds per bushel.In Riley County, Kansas Wheat Commission board member, Nathan Larson has mixed feelings about this year’s wheat crop. He recalled how difficult it was to get his crop in last fall because there was too much moisture to even get into fields. He still thinks there was moisture in the ground to help the wheat grow, but his stands did not fill out with tillers like he had hoped, and he had more weed pressure.&nbsp;Larson has been delivering Syngenta Monument crop to the local elevator in Leonardville, where test weights have not been great at an average of 58 pounds per bushel. Overall, his crop is averaging 30 bushels per acre.&nbsp;“It’s a disappointing year, but when you think about southwest Kansas, it’s not a BAD year,” Larson shared.Back in central Kansas, Del Adcock of Bartlett Grain in Great Bend reported the area is about 10 days to two weeks behind normal. So far, they’ve taken in about 20 percent of the wheat they expect to receive. Test weights are good, averaging 60 pounds per bushel and above, with higher-than-average protein.&nbsp;Adcock said yields are averaging in the high 20s to low 30s with a range from the teens to 50 bushels per acre. Weeds are everywhere, due to thin stands and the crop maturing later than normal.&nbsp;Bartlett Grain has a six-county draw radius and Adcock expects to receive about half the wheat of an average year. Day 7, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

North Central Kansas Pride (NCKP) announced this week that they will have a PRIDE float in the annual Old-Fashioned Fourth Of July Parade in Sterling, Kansas. 

&nbsp;This will be the first time ever that an LGBTQ+ organization has entered the parade. &nbsp;The Rice County Democrats will also join NCKP in the parade. 

According to a NCKP news release, people who have voiced their support of the float have been threatened and complaints about NCKP's&nbsp; parade were sent to the city commission. &nbsp;

NCKP assured the city officials and parade organizers the float features a variety of rainbow decorations, numerous flags, and plenty of candy, stuffed animals, sprayed water, and some great music and people from both the Salina and Sterling showing their support of the community.

&nbsp;NCKP founder, Kevin Lynn, Salina, said even when PRIDE Month ends, it is still important to be an advocate.&nbsp;

“I want to make sure that communities know that just because Pride month ends, there are members of the LGBTQ+ community out there fighting and making sure LGBTQ+ people in community are safe. We have started a “safe space” campaign in Salina and will help other communities start it as well," Lynn said.&nbsp;

The Old Fashioned Fourth of July Parade begins at 2:00 p.m. on July 4.

Ad Astra set to host Salina Library 'End-of-Summer Adult Party' in Aug.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Supreme Court is expected to release its ruling on the legality of President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan in the coming days. Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann is hoping that the court reinforces the power of the purse for Congress.

"When the administration issues an Executive Order, Congress can move to strike it down, through what is called the Congressional Review Act," Mann said. "Last week, I voted to strike down what President Biden is trying to do there. The legislation to strike down that Executive Order passed on a bipartisan measure. It's a pretty widespread rebuke of what the President is trying to do."

The idea is that if student loan forgiveness should be done, it is the purview of those who authorize spending, not of the executive branch.

"President Biden's stroke of the pen is trying to wipe off up to $15,000 of student debt for folks, which is incredibly unfair to all the other taxpayers who are footing that bill, not to mention those that worked hard and already paid off their student loan and also those that never took out student loans in the first place."

Mann has been back in Kansas holding town halls throughout the Big First District this week.

&nbsp;Salina Area United Way is extremely excited to announce that the organization was awarded $1,872,100 to help create 187 new childcare slots in the Salina area. Funding was granted from the Kansas Children’s Cabinet Child Care Capacity Accelerator grant program. 

This grant alone will create 40 new infant slots in the community. The three centers benefitting from the Accelerator Grant are: Salina Family YMCA McAdams Center, Love N’ Learn, and St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church. A maximum of $43.5 million was awarded across the state, with this grant being very sought out and competitive. There was a total of $117 million in total requests for the state of Kansas.

The Accelerator grant was made possible by the Kansas Office of Recovery – SPARK health and education initiatives funding for childcare capital improvements and Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) – Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) Discretionary Supplemental funds and administered by the Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund (KCCTF) to support communities in creating sustainable, high-quality childcare. The purpose of the grant is to support community approaches to addressing childcare capacity, specifically through new construction, significant expansion, and major renovations of existing childcare facilities, launch operational support, and implementation of sustainable solutions. 

Funds will be used to build or make crucial improvements that create additional licensed childcare capacity.

“This grant is a huge step in the right direction in making positive changes for the childcare shortage we have in Saline County,” says Claire Ludes, Executive Director of the Salina Area United Way. “This is just the beginning of a much bigger plan to continue making childcare a priority for our community. We couldn’t be more grateful for this grant and the impact it is going to make in our community.”

In April, Salina Area United Way announced the start and opening of the Early Childcare Initiative Fund at their organization. The ultimate goal of starting this fund is to make strong and lasting steps towards combating childcare issues and shortages in Saline County.

Salina Area United Way is working directly with this fund to look at the opportunities for renovation and expansion of current centers and spaces in the area. At this time, existing real estate is available in the area that could be utilized for childcare and creating more childcare slots for families in the community.

“With existing rooms closed and existing real estate available to renovate, the number of potential slots through these avenues is a key starting point in addressing moving the needle in regard to childcare issues in Saline County,” says Ludes.

Throwback Thursday: Lagerberg Brothers Tailors

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Office of the State Fire Marshal and Safe Kids Kansas would like to share some important safety tips to ensure that all Kansans have a safe and fun Independence Day this year.

In 2022, there were a total of 102 injuries caused by fireworks in Kansas.&nbsp;The person igniting the firework was most likely to be injured,&nbsp;and the hands were the most common body part to be injured.&nbsp;Over half of the injuries that occurred from fireworks that happened on July Fourth were from burns. There was a 43 percent decrease in reported injuries from 2021.

Each age group saw a decrease except for a slight increase in 0-3 year-olds. The highest incidents of injuries were caused by mortars or artillery fireworks and other fireworks like parachutes, fountains and spinning items. We encourage parents to let their little ones use glow sticks instead of sparklers and leave the rest to grownups.”Grilling is another favorite part of many summertime gatherings. Make sure grills are used outdoors only, away from the home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets away from the grill area and never leave your grill unattended. Clean your grill regularly to prevent grease fires.“We want everyone to have a fun and safe celebration on Independence Day,”&nbsp;Doug Jorgensen, state fire marshal, said. &nbsp;“Taking a few simple precautions if you’re lighting off fireworks or grilling can ensure that your family and friends are safe and injury free this fourth of July.
