Early Monday morning, a driver struck a pedestrian crossing at a crosswalk near the Salina YMCA.

According to Sgt. Chad McCary, 66-year-old Salina resident Orville Mann, driving a 2018 Jeep Cherokee, struck 18-year-old Salinan Allison Cole while she walked across YMCA Drive away from the exercise facility.

Mann left the YMCA parking lot and turned northbound onto YMCA Drive, where he struck Cole.

"She had severe head trauma consisting of a fractured skull from falling or hitting the ground," McCary said. "She was alert and conscious the whole time that we were there. EMS arrived and transported her to the hospital."

McCary said detectives are currently reviewing video footage of the incident, but foggy conditions did not seem to be a factor in the strike. 

"We are still looking at some evidence to determine culpability on one or both's responsibilities," McCary said.

Today at 7:24 a.m. Salina Police and EMS received a call regarding a pedestrian-vehicle accident near the Salina YMCA.

According to Salina Police Department Sgt. Chad McCary, a vehicle driven by a 66-year-old Salina man was traveling northbound on YMCA Drive when his car hit an 18-year-old pedestrian walking towards the YMCA. Sgt. McCary said the pedestrian was walking in the crosswalk at the time of the accident.&nbsp;

Salina EMS transported the 18-year-old victim to Salina Regional Health Center with unspecified injuries.&nbsp;

"It was foggy and dark this morning. We are working to determine the cause of the accident," McCary said.&nbsp;

Salina Post will update this story as more information becomes available.&nbsp;

Wichita State University announces 2023 Fall Semester Honor Roll

Registration opens March 4 for Walk Kansas, a team-based challenge that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike, swim or do whatever activity they prefer to live more healthfully.

Winter may be imposing its lull on some people’s exercise programs, but Sharolyn Jackson is not one of those.

In fact, Jackson – a K-State Research and Extension family and consumer sciences specialist in northeast Kansas – has her thoughts squarely fixed on spring’s warmer days and a program that is nearing a quarter century of getting folks moving.

Jackson is the state leader of the <a href="https://www.walkkansas.org/">popular Walk Kansas program</a>, a team-based challenged that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike swim or do whatever they need to live more healthfully. The program routinely draws more than 4,000 participants in Kansas and across the country.

She says Walk Kansas was founded in 2001 on the principle that if teams of six people would meet the minimum guidelines for physical activity over eight weeks, they could collectively and virtually walk across the state of Kansas – or approximately 423 miles.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week – or about 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

“When you think about a moderate activity, there’s an easy way to gauge if you’re getting that,” Jackson said. “It’s called the Talk Test. Whatever activity you’re doing, if you can barely have a conversation, but not sing, then you’re exercising at a moderate level.”

Jackson is encouraging those interested in Walk Kansas to begin forming their teams now. Registration opens on March 4, and the eight-week challenge will run from March 31 through May 25. Walk Kansas is also open to those who want to take on the eight-week program by themselves.

Walk Kansas is open to participants beyond Kansas. In fact, Jackson said it is common for team captains to form their team with family members or friends who live in other states or even other countries. Each team member walks when they want, where they want.

“The bottom line is to just move, no matter what type of activity you enjoy, to limit those periods of time when you’re sitting,” Jackson said. “A lot of us have jobs in which we do more sitting and working in front of computers, and that’s exhausting in its own way. So, we need to get into the habit of getting up every 30 minutes, which is ideal, but at least once an hour to move around a little bit. That’s a habit that you can get into that is really good.”

Walk Kansas, she adds, helps to offset a mindset of always doing things with less effort. “When it comes to physical activity,” Jackson said, “we’re really looking at how we can do some things with more effort, because that boosts your fitness and your overall health.”

Jackson said another benefit of Walk Kansas is the weekly newsletter, which includes tips on other healthy habits – such sleep, diet, strength, balance and more.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Wind Advisory for Wednesday for south winds sustained from 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph over portions of Central and South Central Kansas from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday to midnight

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Small tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Hang onto the steering wheel tight if traveling on east west roads.

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

OTTAWA COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6:30a.m. Wednesday in Ottawa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Chevrolet Trax driven by Bethany&nbsp;Primeaux, 21, Concordia, was southbound on U.S. 81 at Quartz Road.&nbsp;

The driver made an unsafe turn in front of a southbound 2022 Peterbilt semi driven by Caleb Johnson, 42, Scandia.&nbsp; The semi rear-ended the SUV.

EMS transporeted Primeaux to Salina Regional Health Center. Johnson was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

K-State Research and Extension beef specialist Justin Waggoner says monitoring the body condition of gestating cows during times of cold stress becomes critical for calving and rebreeding.

Cold January temperatures followed by muddy conditions from melting snow has created special challenges for beef cattle producers, said Kansas State University beef extension specialist Justin Waggoner.

“We’re getting muddy, but at the same time we’ve got these cold temperatures, so it really starts to add up, if you will, in terms of the impact it can have on cattle,” he said.

Waggoner said monitoring the body condition of gestating cows during times of cold stress becomes critical for calving and rebreeding.

“I would encourage cow-calf producers to pay close attention to body condition score on cows, especially as we begin to get closer to calving,” he said. “The other side of that is we need to prepare ourselves that if we’re seeing some thin cows at calving, then we need to consider what that looks like in terms of the upcoming breeding season. Likely, it’s going to take longer for those cows to cycle back.”

Observing the weights of replacement heifers experiencing cold stress relative to target weights at breeding should also be monitored, according to Waggoner.

“We get this implication of cold stress and these heifers aren’t able to gain as much,” he said. “Take the opportunity to do a weight check on those heifers 45 to 60 days before the expected breeding season.”

Bulls require management during harsh winter weather as well, Waggoner said.

“We talk about the importance of bull management oftentimes in providing bedding for those bulls, but the other piece of that is we certainly want to encourage producers to do a semen test prior to turnout,” he said. “We’re more focused on the calves and the upcoming calving season, so it’s just really easy to overlook those bulls.”

Management of feeding sites is also important.

“We need to consider moving the location where we’re feeding those livestock. If we’re still feeding cows out on pasture, rolling hay, then we need to make sure that we’re minimizing the damage to a particular location, or we may need to do some clean-up of those long term feeding sites once conditions improve,” he said.

Concerning the growing and finishing sectors of the industry, poor pen maintenance and muddy conditions take a toll on the gain of fed cattle, Waggoner said.

“Hoof deep mud can start to impact cattle performance and reduce it by as much as 15%,” he said.

Additionally, backgrounding and growing operations may need to account for reduced animal performance in their marketing plans, Waggoner said.

“If we’re in a system where we’d like to market eight-weight (800 pound) calves in March, and if we’re colder and wet, there’s some likelihood that those calves are going to be lighter,” he said. “So re-evaluating the performance of those calves relative to their optimum marketing date certainly will be beneficial to producers.”

KSRE: Beef specialist explains how to keep cattle in less-than-ideal winter climates

Late Tuesday afternoon, a residence in the 7200 block of East Farrlley&nbsp; Road reported a burglary where the suspect stole more than $10,000 in various American currency.

According to Saline County Sheriff Rodger Soldan, the unknown suspect stole $7,300 in cash, the rest in antique coins, and $2 bills.

"They had a collection of $2 bills, about 100 antique silver dollars, about 50 of the 1960s era silver dollars, $50 in loose change and then five 1841 silver dollars that were valued at $3,500," Soldan said.

The burglary occurred between 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., when both residents were away from home. 

Soldan said there was no evidence of forced entry, so the suspect may have entered through an unlocked door or window. The burglar damaged a few pieces of furniture, including a nightstand and chair.

One of the residents had worked in his shop on the property in the morning and left around 2 p.m. for the town. His wife arrived home at 5:30 p.m., discovered the crime and contacted the Sheriff's Office.

The total loss due to the burglary adds up to $11,020, with $10,900 in physical currency and $120 in property damage.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Feb. 7

Steven Howe, Salina’s Republican 71st&nbsp;District&nbsp;representative, standing apart from other Republican statehouse reps,&nbsp;deserves&nbsp;our thanks.&nbsp; &nbsp;Why?&nbsp;&nbsp;He told the truth—that Trump lied and&nbsp;continues to lie, with one goal:&nbsp;&nbsp;to&nbsp;seize power&nbsp;unlawfully, at any cost, for his sole benefit.&nbsp;&nbsp;Howe asks, “Will Republicans. . .&nbsp;&nbsp;give in to a cult of personality, group-think,&nbsp;and&nbsp;mob mentality [undermining] the rule of law?”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Precisely the right question, and at the&nbsp;right time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While claiming independence of thought, he usually and immediately&nbsp;votes with Republican lock-step group-think mentality.&nbsp;&nbsp;Within&nbsp;scant days of publishing his letter,&nbsp;he voted for the grossly unfair ‘Flat tax’ proposal that leadership rammed&nbsp;through first thing&nbsp;this session.&nbsp;&nbsp;A flat&nbsp;tax that will flatten us.&nbsp;&nbsp;And fatten the&nbsp;rich.

If you try to live on $6,000/year, imagine being required to&nbsp;pay 5.25% back to the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;While you&nbsp;scrap for every last penny,&nbsp;the wealthiest 20% would rake in 70% of that tax&nbsp;cut.&nbsp;&nbsp;They’d get 2 of every 3 dollars cut&nbsp;from Kansas’ budget.&nbsp;&nbsp;Result: <a href="https://itep.org/state-rundown-1-18-state-tax-priorities-taking-shape-in-2024/">in 5&nbsp;years,&nbsp;Kansas would sink to more than half a BILLION in debt.</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;Sound familiar?&nbsp; &nbsp;Says Republican leadership:&nbsp;&nbsp;“We can&nbsp;afford it.”&nbsp;

<a href="https://itep.org/state-rundown-1-18-state-tax-priorities-taking-shape-in-2024/" target="_blank"></a>“Good Kansan” Charles Koch could rake in roughly $875,000 per year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mr. Koch’s windfall would be worth over 12&nbsp;years’ of&nbsp;tax cuts for median-income ($70,000) households.&nbsp;

Is that money better spent on helping our communities&nbsp;thrive, or lining the pockets of billionaires?

Not only does Howe regularly cave to the Republican&nbsp;group-think mob mentality harming Kansans’ welfare, as a leader&nbsp;himself, in his first year as&nbsp;Chair of the Higher Education Budget Committee, he used his new power to demand&nbsp;that&nbsp;universities give a full accounting of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion&nbsp;expenses. The threat was more than&nbsp;implicit.

Now Howe magnifies this gun to the head of Kansas higher ed&nbsp;in his new bill,&nbsp;House&nbsp;Bill 2460.&nbsp;&nbsp;The bill would “prohibit&nbsp;public&nbsp;colleges and universities from including DEI as a provision for&nbsp;admission, financial aid or employment decisions.”&nbsp;&nbsp;It levies a&nbsp;$100,000 administrative penalty&nbsp;if any job-seeker feels he/she was wronged by that requirement.

<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/01/31/bill-restricting-dei-returns-to-kansas-legislature-amid-debate-over-ideology-pronouns/?emci=6838e9fc-a7c0-ee11-b660-002248223197&amp;emdi=3252e1bd-e8c0-ee11-b660-002248223197&amp;ceid=123513">&nbsp;It would bar any “pledge or statement regarding diversity,&nbsp;equity, inclusion, patriotism or related topics.”</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As someone whose&nbsp;loyalty oath to the USA was&nbsp;required for a federal scholarship, I’m dumbfounded.&nbsp;&nbsp;What, for heavens sake, is wrong with&nbsp;asking&nbsp;employment candidates to commit to being in favor of diversity, equity, and&nbsp;inclusion, thus making an effort to right&nbsp;what’s wrong in this country?

On its face, this is an attempt to silence fairness and&nbsp;equity in the state and country, against allowing open minds to&nbsp;investigate how&nbsp;we all participate in a system that is often non-diverse and inequitable, thus&nbsp;placing ourselves in a self-made&nbsp;prison of prejudice.&nbsp;

To Rep. Howe's credit, he is a&nbsp;respectful and willing listener.&nbsp;&nbsp;But&nbsp;true independence must go beyond&nbsp;merely urging his party away from a&nbsp;catastrophic dictator.

 </figure>By DAVID NORLIN LETTER TO THE EDITOR Resident of SalinaSteven Howe, Salina’s Republican 71st&nbsp;District&nbsp;representative, standing apart from other Republican statehouse reps,&nbsp;deserves&nbsp;our thanks.&nbsp; &nbsp;Why?&nbsp;&nbsp;He told the truth—that Trump lied and&nbsp;continues to lie, with one goal:&nbsp;&nbsp;to&nbsp;seize power&nbsp;unlawfully, at any cost, for his sole benefit.&nbsp;&nbsp;Howe asks, “Will Republicans. . .&nbsp;&nbsp;give in to a cult of personality, group-think,&nbsp;and&nbsp;mob mentality [undermining] the rule of law?”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Precisely the right question, and at the&nbsp;right time.&nbsp;&nbsp;And yet.&nbsp;While claiming independence of thought, he usually and immediately&nbsp;votes with Republican lock-step group-think mentality.&nbsp;&nbsp;Within&nbsp;scant days of publishing his letter,&nbsp;he voted for the grossly unfair ‘Flat tax’ proposal that leadership rammed&nbsp;through first thing&nbsp;this session.&nbsp;&nbsp;A flat&nbsp;tax that will flatten us.&nbsp;&nbsp;And fatten the&nbsp;rich.If you try to live on $6,000/year, imagine being required to&nbsp;pay 5.25% back to the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;While you&nbsp;scrap for every last penny,&nbsp;the wealthiest 20% would rake in 70% of that tax&nbsp;cut.&nbsp;&nbsp;They’d get 2 of every 3 dollars cut&nbsp;from Kansas’ budget.&nbsp;&nbsp;Result: <a href="https://itep.org/state-rundown-1-18-state-tax-priorities-taking-shape-in-2024/">in 5&nbsp;years,&nbsp;Kansas would sink to more than half a BILLION in debt.</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;Sound familiar?&nbsp; &nbsp;Says Republican leadership:&nbsp;&nbsp;“We can&nbsp;afford it.”&nbsp;<a href="https://itep.org/state-rundown-1-18-state-tax-priorities-taking-shape-in-2024/" target="_blank"></a>“Good Kansan” Charles Koch could rake in roughly $875,000 per year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mr. Koch’s windfall would be worth over 12&nbsp;years’ of&nbsp;tax cuts for median-income ($70,000) households.&nbsp;Is that money better spent on helping our communities&nbsp;thrive, or lining the pockets of billionaires?Not only does Howe regularly cave to the Republican&nbsp;group-think mob mentality harming Kansans’ welfare, as a leader&nbsp;himself, in his first year as&nbsp;Chair of the Higher Education Budget Committee, he used his new power to demand&nbsp;that&nbsp;universities give a full accounting of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion&nbsp;expenses. The threat was more than&nbsp;implicit.Now Howe magnifies this gun to the head of Kansas higher ed&nbsp;in his new bill,&nbsp;House&nbsp;Bill 2460.&nbsp;&nbsp;The bill would “prohibit&nbsp;public&nbsp;colleges and universities from including DEI as a provision for&nbsp;admission, financial aid or employment decisions.”&nbsp;&nbsp;It levies a&nbsp;$100,000 administrative penalty&nbsp;if any job-seeker feels he/she was wronged by that requirement.<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/01/31/bill-restricting-dei-returns-to-kansas-legislature-amid-debate-over-ideology-pronouns/?emci=6838e9fc-a7c0-ee11-b660-002248223197&amp;emdi=3252e1bd-e8c0-ee11-b660-002248223197&amp;ceid=123513">&nbsp;It would bar any “pledge or statement regarding diversity,&nbsp;equity, inclusion, patriotism or related topics.”</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As someone whose&nbsp;loyalty oath to the USA was&nbsp;required for a federal scholarship, I’m dumbfounded.&nbsp;&nbsp;What, for heavens sake, is wrong with&nbsp;asking&nbsp;employment candidates to commit to being in favor of diversity, equity, and&nbsp;inclusion, thus making an effort to right&nbsp;what’s wrong in this country?On its face, this is an attempt to silence fairness and&nbsp;equity in the state and country, against allowing open minds to&nbsp;investigate how&nbsp;we all participate in a system that is often non-diverse and inequitable, thus&nbsp;placing ourselves in a self-made&nbsp;prison of prejudice.&nbsp;To Rep. Letter to the Editor: Escaping cult culture 

The Boston Marathon is regarded as one of the most prestigious race in the world and for many runners qualifying for Boston represents the completion of a lifelong running goal. To qualify to run in the Boston Marathon runners have to run at a USATF Certified marathon and meet certain qualifying times based on their age group. 

FindMyMarathon.com provides information on USATF Certified courses in each state, including the percentage of runners who qualified for the Boston Marathon. In 2023, 11.71% of runners at the Salina Crossroads Marathon achieved a Boston Marathon qualifying time, which was the highest of any marathon in Kansas. The Eisenhower Marathon in Abilene was second with 9.88% followed by the Garmin Olathe Marathon with 9.75%. Other marathons in Kansas include Gobbler Grind Marathon in Overland Park with 9.52%, Prairie Fire Marathon in Wichita with 5.80% and Little Apple Marathon in Manhattan with 4.62%.

The third annual Salina Crossroads Marathon will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024 in downtown Salina. There are currently over 2000 runners registered from 45 states, Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, and United Kingdom. The Salina Crossroads Marathon saw an increase from 817 registered runners in 2022 to over 3400 in 2023 and has set a goal of 4000 registered runners for the 2024 race.

The 2024 Salina Crossroads Marathon weekend will feature seven family-friendly events:

“One of our goals with the Salina Crossroads Marathon is to create a high quality event with fun race options for the entire family,” said Co-Race Director Daniel Craig. “In addition to having one of the premier marathons in Kansas we hope that the 5K run, 5K walk, team relays, half mile kids run, and opportunities to volunteer and cheer on the runners will enable the entire community to come out and be a part of an amazing marathon weekend. We appreciate the support from the City of Salina in helping us create a flat, fast, and scenic course and want to say a special thank you to Brent Buchwald and Sgt. Chad McCary for their support. We also appreciate the support of all of our amazing sponsors that allow us to be a Gold Standard race by providing 100% of the race entry fees to five local youth sports organizations.” 

&nbsp;In 2023, the Salina Crossroads Marathon had over 50 organizations sponsor/support the marathon including Vortex Companies who was the Title Sponsor and Schwan’s Company who provided Edwards Cream pie by the slice, which was a huge hit with runners.&nbsp;

The Salina Crossroads Marathon has developed the brand of The Most Runner Friendly Marathon in Kansas. “We strive to achieve to be the Most Runner Friendly Marathon in Kansas by allowing registered runners the option to change their race distance at any time, defer entries to the following year, and we offer race day packet pickup,” said Craig. “A race experience starts long before the race with having great pre-race communication, an easy and convenient packet pickup, plenty of close parking, and a well-marked course with lots of amazing volunteers.”

One change that runners will notice this year is that the Salina Crossroads Marathon is separating out the cost of the race entry from the race shirt. “Over 1/3 of our race budget last year was for race shirts, so by separating out the cost of the race entry from the cost of the race shirt we hope to be able to continue being the most affordable marathon in Kansas and allow runners the flexibility to choose whether or not to pay for a race shirt,” said Craig. “It will help to lower our overall costs and allow us to maintain our Gold Level status by providing 100% of race entry fees to local youth sports organizations while continuing to grow the race. We have received an extremely positive response from runners who appreciate having the option of whether or not to pay for a race shirt.”

With many races increasing entry fees, it can make it difficult for runners to participate in running events. The Salina Crossroads Marathon has some of the lowest registration fees of any race in Kansas and offers discounted entries for those that register early. Runners who register by March 31 will benefit by receiving significantly reduced entries. “When runners register early it helps us out in several ways. We are better able to predict how many medals and race shirts to order which helps to keep our expenses low. It also prevents the potential of running out of medals, which has happened at several races this year, and it allows us to know how many runners to prepare for when we are planning for our aid stations along the course as well as the post-race celebration,” said Craig. Having affordable entries was one the most listed reasons for why runners selected Salina Crossroads. 

One participant said “The deals they ran to be able to register. I am a single mom of four and I do not get the opportunity to sign up for many races, because I don’t have the extra money. So this was very much appreciated.”

Crossroads Marathon recognized as highest Boston Marathon qualifying rate in the state

Five FFA* Chapter members, including Central and South high school students, competed in the Employability Skills and Public Speaking Leadership Development Events (LDE) at the end of January.

Kaitlyn Elder, FFA Advisor and agriculture education teacher, makes sure leadership and growth opportunities are a part of the chapter. At the January competition, Londyn Detfelson, Eva Arb and Adia Peck showcased their skills in the employability LDE.&nbsp;

“The girls had to “apply” for an agriculture-related job that they could get right after high school,” explains Kaitlyn. “We worked on basic interview questions and how to present yourself in a job interview.” Adia's outstanding performance earned her second place in her competition group, propelling her to the final round where she finished sixth overall, receiving a medal for her achievements.&nbsp;

Ninth grade students, Ashlyn Calhoun and Abigail Zerbe, competed in the Creed, a freshman-only event. The FFA Creed outlines the organization’s values and beliefs regarding the industry of agriculture, FFA membership, citizenship and patriotism.&nbsp;Students participating in the&nbsp;Creed Speaking&nbsp;LDE learn to communicate in a powerful, organized and professional manner and build&nbsp;self-confidence.&nbsp;

“The Creed and Employability Skills Leadership Developments are helping my students build those skills that everyone needs,” added Kaitlyn. “They created a career objective and were evaluated on their public speaking, cover letter, and overall presentation in a professional setting.”

And their hard work paid off. Ashlyn secured a fifth place medal in her group competition while Abigail took sixth place in a separate competition. Both successfully recited the five-paragraph FFA Creed by memory.

Next steps for the FFA students include preparing for and competing in poultry judging during early February. Then, livestock judging, vet science, floriculture and potentially the state Career Development Events (CDEs) in April. And it’s not just all hard work. The students are planning some lighter, fun activities during FFA Week, February 17-24.

Kaitlyn wants more people to be aware of opportunities in FFA. “I think some people tend to overlook FFA and Agriculture Education and don’t realize the leadership it can provide for our students. I am excited for the Future of Salina FFA!”

Salina Public Schools FFA Chapter Students Shine

Early Monday morning, a suspect broke into Chuck's Bar and burglarized a cash arcade game, causing a total loss of $12,000.

According to Salina Police Department Capt. James Feldman, around 6:40 a.m., an unknown suspect broke into the business through a window on the southwest corner of the building.

"They gained entry and then damaged the Dragon's Ascent game," Feldman said. "[They] destroyed it and took the cash from it — it looks like the total loss with the cost of the machine is going to be around $12,000 — the machine was totaled."

Dragon's Ascent, A Game of Skill and Strategy, is an arcade-like game that provides actual cash prizes for its players.

Feldman said the suspect entered and exited through the window they broke and that officers would investigate the video footage captured from the business once it reached SPD.

"It doesn't sound like, from what they could see on the video, that there's going to be really good descriptors of it," Feldman said. "But we're still waiting for them to be able to get it to us."

On Tuesday, February 6, Smoky Hill LLC of Salina will begin removing and replacing the pavement on Cloud Street just west of the Ohio Street intersection.

During construction Cloud Street at the intersection will be closed to traffic. Weather permitting, the work should be completed in just more than one week.

This work remains from the City of Salina’s 2023 $4.7 million maintenance capital improvement program.

Support Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Salina at Hickory Hut 

By LESLIE MANNING The Spotlight A presentation titled Putting Science Behind the Tradition will be free to the public at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8 in the Southeast of Saline Theatre, 5056 E. K-4 Highway.

According to Jason West, CEO of Hyatt Life Sciences and son of Dr. Gene Zaid, back in 2005 his father returned to Jerusalem to visit his father, and was reintroduced to a plant that grows wild in the Middle East. The plant, Arum Palaestinum, or commonly called Solomon’s Lilly, is a Calla Lilly with deep purple colored flowers.&nbsp;

“They use this plant a lot for medicinal purposes,”&nbsp;West said.&nbsp;“They chop it up and brew it as a tea. This thing has been in use in that part of the world for as long as anybody can remember.”

This thing has been in use in that part of the world for as long as anybody can remember.”Dr. Zaid received his bachelors in chemistry for Kansas Wesleyan University and a masters in chemical engineering from Wichita State University. He started Genzada Pharmaceuticals, analyzing the plant, breaking it down into its molecular components. He then started extracting the specific molecules he thought was causing this plant to work.&nbsp;In addition, Dr. Zaid started making the tea, and sharing it with friends and neighbors in Sterling.&nbsp;“We started doing a lot of our research by creating the tea,”&nbsp;West said.&nbsp;“Pretty soon, there were folks around town in Sterling with breast cancer or prostate cancer who would call up and request some tea. This thing started to snowball and we were pushing out about 40 gallons of tea a week. It finally dawned on us that there was a real desire for this product to be commercially available.”Dr. Zaid started Hyatt Life Sciences in 2016, after taking the plant through testing and sending the results to the FDA. As a supplement, the products offered by Hyatt Life Sciences are not FDA approved, however, when Dr. Zaid did not receive any word that the product was bad, he went live in 2018.“From our standpoint as a company, because the product is not tested clinically for cancer or other illnesses, we can’t market the product as medicine,”&nbsp;West said.&nbsp;“At these events, we simply talk about our research and what we are doing specifically on the drug side of the business.”Other speakers during the event will include Karen Eck, Dee and Vaughn Juhnke, Dr. Jeff Gust and Dan Schweizer. These speakers will share their testimony of using the supplement while treating a cancer diagnosis.&nbsp;The town hall style presentation is coordinated by Kelsey Loader.“Three years ago, after my dad finished his treatment for prostate cancer, my best friend’s father-in-law mentioned Afaya Plus to my mom,”&nbsp;Loader said.&nbsp;“Thanksgiving 2022, my sister was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. My mom remembered the information she received about Afaya Plus by Hyatt Life Science.”Loader’s sister, Kendra Ryser, will be present during the town hall style presentation, and will share her experience with Afaya Plus. According to Loader, her sister’s PET scan in January 2023 showed cancer in her liver, lungs and lymph nodes. Two weeks before her sister started chemotherapy treatments, a trip was made to Hutchinson to consult with Dr. Gene Zaid at Hyatt Life Science.&nbsp;“Kendra immediately started on their supplements for cancer, and started her chemo as scheduled,”&nbsp;Loader said.&nbsp;“My sister’s PET scan in April showed no cancer in her lungs or lymph nodes and the cancer in her liver had greatly decreased.”
