RUSSELL COUNTY —The National Weather Service damage survey team found two areas of tornado damage across central Kansas from Sunday's storms.

According to the National Weather Service, the first tornado rated EF1 with maximum winds of 98mph. It was on the ground northwest of Russell from 3:32 to 3:42p.m. and traveled 1.7 miles. A majority of the damage was to numerous power poles.

The second tornado was northeast of Wilson. It also rated EF1 with maximum winds of 100mph. It was on the ground from 4:20 to 4:25p.m. and traveled approximately a quarter of a mile. The winds flipped a pivot system north and south of I-70, according to the National Weather Service.

The parking lot that City Lights Stage calls home had a new look on Saturday — tents and tables filled that space with about a dozen vendors for the season's first Farm and Art Market Downtown.

"People are smiling, people are doing exactly what we wanted this market to be, they're talking to one another and being a community," said Salina Downtown, Inc. (SDI) Executive Director Leslie Bishop. "This parking lot is meant to look like this on a Saturday morning."

Familiar businesses like AJ Honey Farms, LLC, Shroom-Mates and Bowden Beef participated in the first market. Still, Bishop said there will be about 20 to 22 vendors in the next few weekends as produce ripens.

Wind River Farm, a local goat farm owned by Angela Price from Falun, joined in selling various goat milk soaps and balms to customers.

"It doesn't look like any first market that I've seen — there's a lot more traffic, a lot more vendors for the first ever, and so I expect good things from this market," Price said.&nbsp;"Salina Downtown showed me a few things&nbsp;of&nbsp;what&nbsp;their plans&nbsp;are&nbsp;for this area, and I'm very impressed and looking forward to sticking around."

<a href="https://www.salinadowntown.org/farmartmarket">The Farm and Art Market Downtown</a> aims to provide a space for all local Salina vendors to join in and sell their goods, art and other handmade items. More than 500 people stopped by the market on Saturday. Vendors sold-out of produce and craft goods within hours of the market's grand opening.&nbsp;

The market begins at 7:30 a.m. every Saturday during the summer and ends at noon at the City Lights Stage parking lot in downtown Salina.

New Farm and Art Market Downtown, celebrating community with local small business

A Salina man reported a burglary to Salina Police Department (SPD) officers after witnessing a woman walk into his hotel room and steal various personal items before walking away.

SPD Capt. David Villanueva said that between 5:24 and&nbsp;5:28 p.m., Sunday, May 19, 38-year-old Sandra Sekala allegedly walked into a 57-year-old Salina man's room at Budget King Inn on North Broadway Boulevard and stole about $179 in personal items.

"So the story goes that the man is in his room with the door ajar. Allegedly, the suspect came into the room, started taking some items, clothing and other items, put one of the items on and walked out," Villanueva said.&nbsp;

Sekala allegedly stole a t-shirt, a vape pen, a drawstring bag, some cigarettes, a coat, a few other clothing items and a battery pack.

Villanueva said officers recovered all the items after finding Sekala near a bus stop outside the hotel. Officers arrested Sekala for aggravated burglary and booked her into the Saline County Jail.

Alleged aggravated burglary at Budget King Inn on Sunday

CLAY COUNTY —A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 10:30 a.m. Monday in Clay County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Freightliner semi driven by Omar Meza Martinez, 23, Wichita, was&nbsp; northbound on Kansas 15 just south of 25th Road.

The vehicle entered the east ditch, rolled once and came to rest on its wheels. EMS transported Martinez to Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized in Salina after semi rolls

Late Saturday evening, a driver on South Broadway Boulevard struck a pedestrian who was walking east across the large roadway on South Street, critically injuring the pedestrian.

According to Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. David Villanueva, a 48-year-old Salina driver struck the pedestrian at about 10:12 p.m. while she had a green light heading north on Broadway.&nbsp;

Villanueva said a witness saw the cross signals flashing "Do Not Cross" as the pedestrian entered the roadway.

"It was an independent witness who saw that the east and westbound lights were red — north and southbound was green," Villanueva said. "The car was going about 35 to 40 mph and didn't see the person when he stepped in front of the vehicle. That's when the collision occurred."

First responders took the 52-year-old Salina pedestrian to Salina Regional Health Center before crews transported him to Wesleyan Medical Center in Wichita for further treatment.

Villanueva said the pedestrian wore dark gray pants with a gray t-shirt, making him almost invisible in the late evening on May 18. The police report did not provide further updates on the man's condition in the hospital.&nbsp;

"It's still an ongoing investigation," Villanueva said. "Considering the fact that the driver had a green light while traveling northbound, she could do that. At the eastbound-westbound, the witness said it showed 'Don't Cross.'"

SPD officers continue investigating the incident.

Salina Post will update the story as more information becomes available.

Critical injuries from late Saturday night pedestrian accident in Salina

While many things around the Trojan boys basketball program will change next season, the last name of its head coach will not.

On Monday, Southeast of Saline officially announced that Francis Flax, long-time head coach of Brown Mackie College, would be assuming the role of head boys basketball coach at SES.

“When you can bring somebody in with the experience and knowledge that Coach Flax has you do it,” SES AD Doug Minneman said. “He has experience at all levels and he’s had success everywhere he’s been, that’s somebody that you want leading your program and we think he’s a great fit.”

In addition to bringing that experience to the role, Francis has also followed the team closely as the father of previous head coach Bryson Flax, who stepped down after an exceptional six-year run.

After a nine-year coaching stint at Highland Community College, Francis spent 23 years as head coach at Brown Mackie and 25 years as its athletic director.

He retired from both roles at the end of the 2015 season having led the Lions to 446 wins, and six trips to the NJCAA Division II national tournament including two national titles in 1995 and 2005.

All six of those teams finished in the top five nationally.

In addition to two college national titles, Coach Flax also led the Kansas Cagers professional basketball team to a championship in 2007 as part of a 7-year stint as their head coach.

Even in retirement from coaching, Flax didn’t stop bringing national acclaim to his community, helping the Salina Liberty indoor football team to four Champions Bowl appearances including a national title in 2022 as GM of the organization.

The NJCAA Basketball Hall of Famer (2008) has 612 career victories at the college level alone and will inherit a program that is coming off three straight trips to the 3A state tournament, and three straight top-four finishes.

While an opportunity to coach at a place like Southeast was certainly attractive, it was the love of coaching, and the love of the game that brought Flax out of retirement.

“I’ve got a passion for coaching and that’s still what I want to do, that's my sole reason," he said. "I’m very familiar with several of the players and I’ve followed this program for years and years. A few of my kids went to school here and Southeast has a winning culture in athletics and an outstanding reputation in academics.”

Due to damages from Sunday's severe weather, the bridge and road south of Wilson, Kansas will NOT be open by Memorial Day, May 27.&nbsp;

According to the Ellsworth County Highway Department, a date has not been set for the road/bridge to reopen.&nbsp;

Hello and happy Monday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/fddf8aaf-5d72-4a7e-8e4f-d3f2f00727a1">On Monday, Southeast of Saline officially announced</a> that Francis Flax, long-time head coach of Brown Mackie College, would be assuming the role of head boys basketball coach at SES.

Flax is a local coaching legend here in Salina, winning two national championships as head coach with Brown Mackie, another as head coach of the Kansas Cagers, and a fourth national title as GM of the Salina Liberty.

In addition to being voted into the NJCAA basketball hall of fame in 2008, Flax has also followed the program closely as the father of Bryson Flax, who coached the team for the last six years

Over the weekend the Southeast of Saline track and field teams also posted a strong regional finish, with the boys team taking third, the girls team taking fourth, and seven individuals qualifying for state in 19 different events, including three relay teams.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — May 20

The Harvest Farmers Market will continue to offer the Double Up Food Bucks program, a healthy food incentive program that helps low-income families eat more healthy food and supports local farmers

The Harvest Farmers Market is every Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at 1325 E. Cloud Street in the Emmanuel Church parking lot.

SNAP participants who shop at the Harvest Farmers Market can swipe their EBT cards to get tokens to use for food purchases. Through the Double Up program, SNAP participants receive a matching number of Double Up Food Bucks tokens for free, up to $25 per day. This doubles the amount of dollars they can spend on healthy food at the market. 

The SNAP tokens can be used to buy any SNAP eligible items at the market, and the matching free Double Up Food Bucks tokens can be used for any fresh fruits and vegetables. The Double Up tokens can be used any time at the market through October 31, 2024 market season.

"Through the Double Up Food Bucks program, we're not just nourishing bodies, but nurturing communities. By incentivizing fresh produce purchases, we're fostering healthier eating habits, supporting local farmers, and strengthening our local economy. It's a win-win-win that's sowing the seeds of a brighter, healthier future for Salina, Kansas," said Kirsty Hartley. Double Up Food Bucks is funded by grants totaling 12.5-million-dollars from the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, a division of the USDA in addition to generous gifts from the Kansas Health Foundation, Health Forward Foundation, the Hall Family Foundation, the Marion &amp; Henry Bloch Foundation and Blue KC. 

This year, the program is offered at more than 160 locations, including over 70 farmers markets, farm stands, and mobile markets, and 90 grocery stores throughout Kansas and Missouri.

Saline County Jail Bookings, May 20

On May 20, 1927,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-travel-d3a0f4855be7419b87785c3c8309ab73">Charles Lindbergh</a>&nbsp;took off from Roosevelt Field on Long Island, New York, aboard the Spirit of St. Louis on his historic solo flight to France.

In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act, which was intended to encourage settlements west of the Mississippi River by making federal land available for farming.

In 1916, the Saturday Evening Post published its first Norman Rockwell cover; the illustration shows a scowling boy dressed in his Sunday best, dutifully pushing a baby carriage past a couple of boys wearing baseball uniforms.

According to the Salina Airport the storm moving through Salina registered speeds of 100 mph at 5:59 p.m. on May 19.

Saline County Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis said the majority of damage occurred near Brookville and in southern Saline County.&nbsp;

"Couple power lines down, some reports of limbs down, and one particular on the railroad tracks on Fourth Street," said Weis. " We called Union Pacific and let them know about that."

Weis said most of Salina did not see a disruption in their electricity. However in Brookville many residents continue to experience outages.&nbsp;

"Brookville has quite a few limbs and trees down, one of their main lines is down in the park area of brookville," Weis said. "Right now if there are people reporting lines down-please do not touch the power lines. Leave it alone."&nbsp;

Weis reminds Saline County residents that the County remains in a Flood Warning until 11:30 p.m.&nbsp;

Salina Post has received reports of several power outages inside city limits and in western Saline County.

FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 11:30 p.m. CDT THIS EVENING

WHAT Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.

WHERE A portion of Central Kansas, including the following counties, McPherson and Saline.

IMPACTS Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS At 6:18 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the warned area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Salina, Assaria, Gypsum, Brookville, Smolan, New Cambria,    Falun, Glendale, Salina Airport, Bridgeport and Kipp.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two feet of water will carry most vehicles away. Turn around, don`t drown.

Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service when you can do so safely.

Thunderstorm Warning issued in eastern Saline County&nbsp;

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Eastern Saline County in central Kansas until 6:45 p.m. CDT.

At 6:12 p.m. CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line  extending from near Niles to near New Cambria to Assaria, moving  east at 30 mph.

THESE ARE DESTRUCTIVE STORMS FOR EASTERN SALINE COUNTY

HAZARD 100 mph wind gusts and golf ball size hail.

IMPACT You are in a life-threatening situation. Flying debris may be deadly to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be destroyed. Expect considerable damage to homes and businesses. Expect extensive tree damage and power outages.

Locations impacted include Assaria, Gypsum, New Cambria, Bridgeport, and Kipp.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

This is an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION with tornado like wind speeds expected. Mobile homes and high profile vehicles are especially susceptible to winds of this magnitude and may be overturned. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. These storms have the potential to cause serious injury and significant property damage.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a severe Thunderstorm Warning for Western Dickinson County in central Kansas Southeastern Ottawa County in north central Kansas until 6:30 PM CDT.

At 5:42 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line  extending from 3 miles west of Bennington to 4 miles northwest of  Salina to 5 miles southwest of Smolan, moving east at 25 mph.

HAZARD 70 mph wind gusts and ping pong ball size hail.

IMPACT People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect considerable tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

Locations impacted include Abilene, Solomon, Bennington, Culver, Manchester, Carlton, Niles, and Talmage.

This includes Interstate 70 between mile markers 267 and 277.

National Weather Service issues Severe Thunderstorm Warning in our area

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Central Ellsworth County in central Kansas, Saline County in central Kansas Until 6:15 p.m. CDT.

At 5:13 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 6 miles west of
  Brookville, or 11 miles northeast of Kanopolis, moving east at 35
  mph.


HAZARD Two inch hail and 70 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE Radar indicated. IMPACT People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail
 damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect
 considerable tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to
 mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings. Locations impacted include Salina, Ellsworth, Kanopolis, Assaria, Gypsum, Brookville, Smolan,
 New Cambria, Falun, Glendale, Salina Airport, Ellsworth Airport,
 Kanopolis State Park, Kipp, and Kanopolis Lake.

FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 11:30 PM CDT THIS EVENING

WHERE A portion of Central Kansas, including the following counties, Ellsworth, Lincoln and Russell.

At 5:28 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to    thunderstorms. Flooding is ongoing or expected to begin    shortly in the warned area. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain    have fallen.

Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in    the warned area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include: Russell, Ellsworth, Wilson, Kanopolis, Lincoln, Lucas, Gorham, Sylvan Grove, Dorrance, Beverly, Milberger, Bunker Hill, Wilson State Park, Wilson Lake, Ellsworth Airport, Russell Airport and Westfall.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for Lincoln County until 6:00 p.m.&nbsp;

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Lincoln County in central Kansas Northern Ellsworth County in central Kansas until 6:00 p.m. CDT.

At 4:58 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 6 miles southwest  of Beverly, or 7 miles southeast of Lincoln, moving east at 40 mph.

HAZARD 80 mph wind gusts and two inch hail.

IMPACT Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be heavily damaged. Expect considerable damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles. Extensive tree damage and power outages are likely.

Locations impacted include Wilson, Lincoln, Sylvan Grove, Beverly, Barnard, and Westfall.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS Remain alert for a possible tornado! Tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms. If you spot a tornado go at once into the basement or small central room in a sturdy structure.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southern Ottawa County in north central Kansas until 5:45 p.m. CDT.

At 4:39 p.m. CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 4 miles north of Lincoln to 11 miles north of Kanopolis to 3 miles west of Ellsworth, moving east at 40 mph.

HAZARD Golf ball size hail and 70 mph wind gusts.

IMPACT People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect considerable tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

Locations impacted include Minneapolis, Bennington, Tescott, Culver, Wells, and Niles.

By MICHAEL SMITHInsight Kansas Kansas policymakers are abuzz about the recent defeat of a sports stadium tax in Jackson County, MO.&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, they’re saying all the wrong things.&nbsp; To paraphrase James Carville, “it’s affordable housing, stupid.”

If the tax had been approved, the money would have gone to renovate Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs.&nbsp; The three eights cent sales tax extension would also have partially financed a new, downtown stadium for the Royals. Before the vote, nearly all publicity was on the Royals, who confused voters by&nbsp;repeatedly changing plans and venues&nbsp;for months prior to the vote.&nbsp; The opposition was led by KC Tenants, who had a&nbsp;simple message– why subsidize billionaire-owned, for-profit sports teams with a regressive sales tax that falls hardest on the poor, when Kansas Citians cannot find decent, affordable housing? This problem extends well into Kansas.

Few observers believe the defeat had anything to do with Arrowhead Stadium, or the Chiefs. Arrowhead will already be the&nbsp;site of renovations&nbsp;in advance of the 2026 World Cup, which will feature games played there. For additional improvements, the Chiefs and Royals now plan to&nbsp;seek support separately. The Chiefs have a stronger case, and they wish to remain at Arrowhead.

Of course, none of this kept the hype machine from springing into action.&nbsp; Proposals came from as far away as&nbsp;San Antonio, suggesting that the Chiefs move (they have a fiercely loyal fan base here and no plans to move).&nbsp; Ignoring the caution of Governor Kelly, Kansas Legislators also leapt into the act, suggesting an&nbsp;extravagant new Chiefs stadium in Wyandotte County,&nbsp;with a ludicrous plan to fund it with STAR bonds.&nbsp; Considering that the more modest Prairie Fire project in Overland Park recently&nbsp;defaulted&nbsp;on its STAR bonds, the idea that a multibillion dollar football stadium could be entirely financed this way is outrageous. Granted, Sporting Kansas City’s Children's Mercy soccer stadium in Wyandotte County was a successful STAR bonds project–but it is much smaller and only a fraction the cost of a new football stadium.&nbsp; When STAR bonds default, Kansas and/or local taxpayers are on the hook, as with Prairie Fire.

All this hype completely misses the point.&nbsp; The real story of that Jackson County vote is not about sports at all.&nbsp; It is about housing costs.

KC Tenants is a&nbsp;new group&nbsp;formed out of backlash against the KC area’s skyrocketing housing costs and substandard rental housing. Last year, they upset an establishment candidate to win a seat on the KCMO city council, and now this. The housing problem is also hitting hard in Kansas, and it is only a matter of time before KC Tenants or similar groups start popping up here. They secured a 58% “no” vote on the sports tax in Jackson County, despite being outspent by about 20 to 1.&nbsp;

Housing costs are shooting up all over Kansas.&nbsp; In the last year, they rose&nbsp;6.9% in KC,&nbsp;5.5% in Lawrence&nbsp;(where they were already high), and a&nbsp;whopping 10.9% in Wichita. In Topeka, a recent KSNT story found that housing costs have&nbsp;nearly doubled in the last two decades.&nbsp; In many places where affordable housing can still be found, it is in poor condition.&nbsp; This includes&nbsp;large swaths of rural Kansas.

Nationally, housing costs are rising&nbsp;twice as fast as wages.&nbsp; This drains money from other needs, lowers the quality of life, and worsens homelessness.&nbsp; Expect this new movement’s influence to keep spreading across both states, until policymakers start listening.
