The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2025 Freightliner semi driven by Jeffrey E.&nbsp;Womack, 49, Colt, Arkansas, was northbound on Interstate 135 at the Kansas 140 Junction during a severe thunderstorm when the wind blew the vehicle over.

EMS transported&nbsp; a passenger Jeffrey E. Womack, Jr. 32, Colt, Arkansas, to Salina Regional Health Center. The driver was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Learn to pickle vegetables in hands-on workshop Discover the right vegetables for pickling and walk through the pickling and canning process, step-by-step in a half-day, hands-on workshop.

Karen Blakeslee, coordinator of the Rapid Response Center and co-director of the Kansas Value Added Foods Lab with K-State Research and Extension, will lead the class. Participants will learn how to safely pickle vegetables and can them using the water bath canning technique.

Learn to pickle vegetables in hands-on workshop on Aug. 22

“Being the first year to bring this to Salina, I think there is a lot of opportunity for it,” Klara Mann, owner at operator of Salina Outdoors, said. “We have a lot of customers coming in who are wanting to do competitions, so this was a good opportunity to begin.”

Though the Salina Outdoors store will be closing in the Central Mall at the end of July, the business will be partnering with the Tri-Rivers Fair to host a Barbecue Cook-off on Saturday, Aug. 10 in the southwest parking lot of the Tony’s Pizza Event Center.

The competitor deadline to enter is Friday, Aug. 2, with registration information online at tririversfair.org. Competitor check-in times for the event are from 12-5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, with overnight camping options available; and 7 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10.

Entries will be judged starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 with the chicken category. Other categories for competition include ribs, pork butt and brisket, and each category will be judged on a schedule.

“Salina Outdoors welcomes you whether you are a pro or a beginner,” Mann said. “Enter in. And if you aren’t interested in cooking, come out and try the delicious barbecue.”

Sampling and the voting for People’s Choice will be open from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10. Sampling tickets will be sold for five tickets for $5 or a bundle of 25 tickets for $20.

“I want to see our community come together and support each other on learning,” Mann said. “Even if you are a beginner, everyone has to start somewhere.”

The Grand Overall Champion of the Tri-Rivers Fair Barbecue Cook-off will win a Primo Grill retailed around $2,000 and spices donated by Salina Outdoors. The Reserve Grand Champion and the top three in each category will earn cash prizes, based on the number of entries. The People’s Choice winner will win a $200 gift card donated by Smoky River Meats.

“I have customers come in all the time asking about competitions,” Mann said. “They are fun and they are a good time, and Salina does none of them.” 

Mann, and her husband, Jason, have considered coordinating barbecue contests through their business, Salina Outdoors. When Tri-Rivers Fairboard President Eric Blomquist approached them about helping launch a barbecue cook-off during the fair, the opportunity was a match.

Then Tri-Rivers Fair entertainment committee member Cain Fouard shared the plan for the barbecue contest, Salina Outdoors agreed.

Salina Outdoors offers different brands of grills and smokers for sale, as well as seasonings. Salina Outdoors inventory has expanded to include other outdoor amenities like patio furniture, AahSpas hot tubs and outdoor kitchen equipment.

“Salina Outdoors opened next to Pools Plus in the summer of 2021,” Mann said. “This was Jason’s hobby that turned into a store - it was a hobby we both enjoyed.”

The store moved to the Central Mall in October 2022. The recent closure of the Central Mall location is due to a search for a new storefront.

The plan for the Tri-Rivers Fair barbecue cook-off involves teams competing in chicken, ribs, pork butt and brisket categories.

“The quality of meat that you buy, some people don’t think that is important,” Mann said. “The more contests you go to, the more you learn what to do.”

Teams must register with a chief cook and as many assistants as the chief cook deems necessary. Each team will be assigned a cooking space for an entry fee of $150. The fee allows participants to compete in all four meat categories and the People’s Choice award.

Pits, cookers, props, trailers, motor homes, vehicles, tents, or any other equipment (including generators) shall not exceed the boundaries of the team's assigned cooking space. 

The cooking space will be measured at 18’ X 20’ for each entry. A double stall can be reserved for an extra $25, making the space 36’x20’ approximately. Overnight camping is available for $50.

Electricity hook-ups are available in 34 of the spaces with both 220 volt and 110 volt outlets. The fee for electricity is $30. Contestants must adhere to all electrical, fire and other codes. 

A fire extinguisher must be near all cooking devices.

Barbecue cooking devices cannot be gas or an electric heat sourced device, but rather must use fire from wood, wood pellets or charcoal. Propane or electric is permitted as fire starters, provided that the competition meat is not in or on the cooking device. Electrical accessories such as spits, augers, or forced draft are permitted. No open pits or holes are permitted, except at the election of the contest organizer. Fires shall not be built on the ground.

Parboiling, Sous-vide, and/or deep-frying competition meat is not allowed. If any of the banned processes are discovered before turn-in, the team will be scored a zero (0) in all criteria by all six judges for that entry. If discovered after turn-in, the team will be scored a one (1) in all criteria by all six judges for that entry.

Meat shall not be sculptured, branded, or presented in a way to make it identifiable. Rosettes of meat slices are not allowed. Violations of this rule will be scored a one (1) in all criteria by all six judges.

Entries will be submitted in a container provided by the contest organizer. Entry number must be on top of the container at turn-in. The container shall not be marked in any way so as to make the container unique or identifiable. Aluminum foil, toothpicks, skewers, foreign material, and/or stuffing are prohibited in the container.

Each contestant must submit at least six (6) portions of meat in an approved container. Chicken, pork, and brisket may be submitted chopped, pulled, sliced, or diced as the cook sees fit, as long as there is enough for six (6) judges. Ribs shall be turned in bone-in.

 Judges may not cut, slice, or shake apart to separate pieces. Each judge will first score all the samples for appearance of the meat. The turn-in containers will then be passed around the table and each judge will place a sample from each of the containers in the appropriate box on the judging plate. Judges shall not lick their fingers while taking these samples; paper towels, non-scented wipes, or damp wash cloths are preferred.

Judges will then score each entry for taste and tenderness, before moving on to the next entry. Judges may not fraternize with teams on turn-in day until the conclusion of judging. The scoring system will be from 9 to 2, all whole numbers between two and nine may be used to score an entry, with 9 being excellent to 2 being inedible.

A score of one (1) is a penalty or disqualification and requires approval by a Contest Rep. Grounds for penalty/disqualification: All judges will give a one (1) in Appearance for prohibited garnish, pooled sauce, or less than 6 samples of meat. All judges will give a one (1) in all criteria for sculptured meat, a marked turn-in container, foreign object in the container, incorrect meat.

“A lot of competitions we’ve been to, they are huge and are a big deal,” Mann said. “The TriRivers Fair Barbecue Contest is an opportunity for backyard barbecue enthusiasts to try their hand here in Salina.”

CLAY CENTER — To get to be a farmer, Brian Martin first has to be a decider.What to grow. How much of it to grow. What seed to use. Where to grow it. When to plant it — both in time of day, and in time of season. How far apart (and deep) to plant it. When to treat it. How to treat it. When to harvest it. For the third-generation Kansas farmer and his wife Lori, some of these decisions — like the one they made to convert to no-till operations in the 1990s — are easier if only in that they're made once and at a bigger scale. Others are made every day and for every acre of land.

Despite his informed intuition and expertise through experience over decades of farming, making these decisions at the level of precision required by modern agriculture can be difficult. Lindsborg getting new fitness center

&nbsp;As grasses within a pasture mature, various physical changes occur, which impact the cattle grazing them. For instance, older plants dry out and lose nutritional value, but also develop coarse stems – making cattle more susceptible to injuries involving their face and eyes.

<a href="https://ksubci.org/2024/07/26/heat-feeding-risk-management-facial-diseases-cull-criteria/" target="_blank">On a recent episode of the Cattle Chat podcast</a>, Kansas State University veterinarians recommend producers watch for lumpy jaw and wooden tongue as their pastures start getting “stemmy.”

“Green, growing grass isn’t likely to cause these problems,” said K-State veterinarian Bob

Larson. “Lumpy jaw and wooden tongue happen when the tissues of the mouth are damaged on rough textured forages.”

In the case of wooden tongue, damaging incidents to the mouth allow for germs that live within the animal to cause an infection.

“It’s not really something that cattle get from other cattle. It’s caused by bacteria that are normally in the mouth and throat area,” Larson said.

K-State veterinarian Brad White adds: “Coarse feeds and grasses can damage the mucous membranes and cause lesions.”

Cattle with wooden tongue display obvious physical symptoms, according to Larson and White.

“Their tongue gets large and tends to hang out of their mouth, making eating difficult. They look like they are panting or drooling,” Larson said.

“It gets stiff, swollen and painful,” White said. “You do not very often see an animal – a cow especially – sticking their tongue out of their mouth; they’re not doing it to play. They are doing it because their tongue won't go back in.”

Like wooden tongue, cattle contract lumpy jaw through the bacteria that inhabit their mouths.

“After an injury, (bacteria) gets into some of the other tissues of the mouth,” Larson said. “What's dangerous about that one is it can invade bone. If that happens, it becomes difficult to cure.”

Larson said when producers discover lumpy jaw and wooden tongue in their earlier stages, cattle have a better chance of recovering.

“A lot of times these cases will be treated intravenously,” he said. “This is pretty effective at bringing those two syndromes back to normal but contact your local veterinarian before making any treatment decisions.”

When examining an animal’s mouth and face for lumpy jaw and wooden tongue, Larson suggests that producers monitor the eyes as well for squamous cell carcinoma, or cancer eye.

If this affliction goes untreated, cattle may face the same fate as their lumpy jaw and wooden tongue-infected counterparts.

“Cattle can get a cancer of the eye – often in their third eyelid. If you treat it early with surgical removal of that area, those animals respond well and can go ahead and have multiple years of productive life after that,” Larson said.

However, “If that cancer spreads and it involves the bones of the head, that is not going to get better, and it is time to think about euthanasia just from an animal welfare standpoint.”

If you enjoy gardening, learning, and giving back as a volunteer, consider becoming an Extension Master Gardener in 2024.&nbsp; Central Kansas District K-State Research and Extension will be offering the 2024 Master Gardener Basic Training Course&nbsp;starting September 5.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Classes begin&nbsp;September 5 and will run each&nbsp;Thursday through December 5.&nbsp; This training will be held in a hybrid format online through zoom and will also include 5 in-person training days.&nbsp; Topics covered include: plant growth and development, soils, insects, diseases, pollinators, landscape maintenance, vegetables, growing fruit, turf management, native plants and biodiversity, annual and perennial flowers, and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Master Gardeners are K-State Research &amp; Extension volunteers who enjoy cultivating their own plants and gardens while sharing their skills and knowledge with the community around them to help others grow.&nbsp; Volunteering as an Extension Master Gardener is a wonderful way to enrich your life and the lives of others.

The decision to become a Master Gardener can be very rewarding.&nbsp; It is a decision to take your horticulture knowledge to the next level and it is a commitment to find creative ways to make a difference in our community while sharing that knowledge with the people and places around you.

Training is just one great benefit.&nbsp; Master Gardeners receive a 40-hour-plus horticulture training course from K-State Extension specialists and county Extension agents.&nbsp; The basic training provides a great starting point for those new to gardening, but is also in depth enough to apply to gardeners of any skill level.&nbsp; Other benefits of being a Master Gardener include the camaraderie of people who share similar passions, receiving ongoing horticulture training and support through K-State Research and Extension, and other local horticulture opportunities.

Once training is complete, Master Gardeners are encouraged to take their knowledge out to the community to share it with others in unique and meaningful ways.&nbsp; First year Master Gardeners volunteer 30 hours of time and during succeeding years have a commitment of just 20 hours to remain active.

Master Gardener volunteer time can be selected from current Master Gardener projects and can also be tailored to individual abilities and interests.&nbsp; Master Gardeners are encouraged to find their creativity in looking for ways to impact the community.&nbsp; A few activities many Master Gardeners enjoy volunteering on include: &nbsp;the demonstration garden, community gardens, county fairs, and educational garden tours and events.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for portions of Central, South Central, and Southeast Kansas.

Cities included: Augusta, Harper, Strong City, Madison, Fredonia, Valley Center, Lincoln, Cottonwood Falls, Chanute, Salina, McPherson, Sylvan Grove, Iola, Anthony, Peabody, Grenola, Bel Aire, Attica, Arkansas City, Ellsworth, Andover, Sedan, Great Bend, El Dorado, Humboldt, Moline, Newton, Howard, Cedar Vale, Russell, Coffeyville, Hillsboro, Hutchinson, Independence, Lyons, Neodesha, Marion, Winfield, Parsons, Derby, Wichita, Wilson, Sterling, Rose Hill, Yates Center, Eureka, Kingman, Wellington, Longton, Park City, and Haysville. The watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Thursday evening.

Expect dangerously hot conditions with heat index values around 110 degrees. Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned environments, avoid direct sunlight, and check on relatives and neighbors. The risk of heat-related illnesses will be significantly heightened during this period.

The Women of Achievement (WOA) committee is excited to announce their upcoming event honoring some of Salina’s most impactful leaders.

“We are excited to announce this year’s honorees,” said Event Co-Chair, Amanda Littell. 

This year’s event will be held Thursday, November 7 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Theatre Salina. The evening will include a program showcasing this year’s honorees and a reception in the lobby of Theatre Salina. All funds raised will go towards the YWCA Legacy Fund held at the Greater Salina Community Foundation.

“At this particular moment in history, women’s leadership is on display, and we are proud to continue to recognize and honor the women in our own community who have had and continue to have an impact in our community.” Colleen Marrs, Event Co-Chair added “It is so important we continue to honor the legacy and further the mission of the YWCA by raising money for the YW Legacy Fund. The fund has granted over $400,000 to local agencies and programs supporting women and children since 2007.”

The ‘Love, Kansas’ campaign is a talent attraction initiative of the Kansas Department of Commerce and Salina has been chosen, along with 18 other communities throughout the state, to participate.&nbsp; The&nbsp;campaign aims to boost Kansas’ population by inviting past residents to return home to live and work.

The launch party will be a grassroots effort to allow current residents to physically send invitations to family and friends who lived in Salina at some point but are now living out-of-state.&nbsp;

Notecards with stamped envelopes will be provided. Residents are encouraged to stop by and write as many invitations&nbsp;as they’d like.&nbsp; Refreshments will be served and those who participate can enter to win a special prize&nbsp;drawing that includes Smoky Hill Silver gift certificates and a Love Salina t-shirt.

“This is really intended to be a true letter-writing campaign,” Renee Duxler, president and CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce said, “We all know how special a hand-written note is in this day and age and it just might be that personal and heartfelt invitation that causes someone to re-consider Salina.”

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) will hold a virtual meeting on Aug. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. to discuss Evergy’s plans for future transmission projects.

Evergy representatives will present details of the planned projects, take questions, and hear comments from Commissioners, Commission Staff and the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board (CURB).

The costs of transmission projects are passed on to ratepayers in the form of a transmission delivery charge (TDC), which appears on monthly electric bills. The workshop gives the public visibility to the transmission planning process, which is designed to provide the infrastructure necessary to ensure reliability while still maintaining affordability for ratepayers.

House Bill 2225 passed by the 2024 Kansas Legislature requires a public meeting to review the utility’s annual transmission compliance filings to the Commission.

Viola Ruth Elizabeth (Roy) Ricks will celebrate her 100th birthday on August 2, 2024. She was born on August 2, 1924, to Dona and Nathalie Roy on a farm near Webster, Kansas. Viola was the eldest among her nine siblings, namely , Eugene, Orville, Clifford, Laverne, Donna, Albert, Shirley, Norma, and Stanley. Unfortunately, her sister Shirley passed away at the age of 4.&nbsp;

On January 30, 1944, Viola married Julian Estus Ricks in Salina, Kansas. At the time, Viola was pursuing her education at Brown Mackie College, while Julian was serving in the Air Force at Schilling Air Force Base.&nbsp;

Following their marriage, they relocated to several different states before settling down in Texas due to Julian's employment. Viola dedicated many years to childcare in Arlington, Texas before retiring. Her interests included gardening, ceramics, and cherished moments spent with loved ones. Traveling the world brought her immense joy, having visited all of the states within the United States, as well as countries like Italy and France.&nbsp;

Viola and Julian are proud parents to five children: Jerry, Larry, Joyce, Janice, and Julie. Their family has grown to include 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.&nbsp;
