CONCORDIA - "Fuel Your Creativity" is the theme for Cloud County Community College's upcoming high school Art Day.

The annual event is scheduled for Friday in Arley Bryant Gymnasium on the Concordia campus.

Students from area high schools will have pieces of artwork on display in the gymnasium, according to information from Cloud County Community College. The artwork will be available for public viewing from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday. There is no charge to view the artwork.

Awards will be given in the following categories: oil painting, acrylic painting, pencil drawing, charcoal, colored pencil, pastel, photography, ceramics, mixed media, stained glass, most unique, found object or recycle art, honorable mention, best of show, and best of sidewalk chalk art.

Winners of all competitions will be announced in Cook Theatre beginning at 1 p.m.

Additionally, during the morning, students will be able to participate in several workshops or in the Sidewalk Chalk Art event. The workshops and their instructors include the following, according to Cloud County Community College.

●Ceramics, slip casting, and clay mono-printing – Leslie Girard.

●Photography – find creative inspiration to take better photos – Rob Zima.

●3D Printing and Lithophanes – Monte Poersch

●Yarn Art and Macramé – Susan Dudley

●Digital Illustration – Washington County High School senior Kadie Toole and Izzy (the amazing Cogi)

●Racing Graphics and Sign Design – Ryan Boyer, Wicked Designs, who will be wrapping a racecar on site.

High school Art Day set for CCCC on Friday

The Friends of the Salina Public Library organization needs your help to find homes for thousands of gently used books.

The group has scheduled a Spring Used Book Sale from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and noon-4 p.m. April 23 in the downstairs Youth Services Annex of the library, 301 W. Elm Street.

“We have thousands of books just waiting to be taken home and enjoyed,” said Gretta Kontas, Used Book Sale chair. “We have westerns, mystery, science fiction, romance as well as general fiction for adults and children. Additionally, we have hundreds of large print books and movies.”

“And our prices are so reasonable that you won’t be able to select just one. On Sunday afternoon, patrons will be able to fill a bag (supplied by Brown’s Shoes) with books for just $5,” added Laura Rhodenbaugh, friends organization treasurer.

Additionally, members of Friends of the Salina Public Library can get into the event early, from 4-6 p.m. Friday. 

Salina Public Library cardholders can sign up to become members of the Friends of the Salina Public Library at the adult circulation desk. The cost is $10 a year for an individual membership and $25 a year for a family membership. In addition to getting first dibs on used book sales, friends members do not pay fines on overdue library materials.

The used book sales offered throughout the year ultimately benefit the library and its patrons. The Friends of the Salina Public Library is a volunteer, board-guided organization that acts as a booster club for the library. 

Some of the organization's activities include providing volunteers for library events, purchasing prizes and youth activities for summer reading programs at the library, supplies for the CLASS program, and providing scholarships for teen library volunteers, the friends group noted in a news release.

“We are excited to be able to raise funds to assist with Summer Reading Programs at the library,” said Debbie Toll, vice president of the Friends Advisory Board.

Friends of Salina Public Library Used Book Sale opens to public Saturday

Yotefest&nbsp;returns to Kansas Wesleyan University this month with a pair of concerts.

Both concerts are scheduled for 7 p.m. in Sams Chapel on the Kansas Wesleyan campus. Both events are free and open to the public, with streaming scheduled to occur on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/@kwustudentmedia" target="_blank">KWU Student Media YouTube page</a>.

Tegan Miller and Assaf Gleizner will give the first performance Monday. Miller is a multigenre soprano who has sung all over the world, from Carnegie Hall to the Vatican. As a musical theatre performer, she has toured the country and performed in several off-Broadway, regional and workshop productions.&nbsp;Miller recently created her own swing band, Tegan and the Turnarounds.

Miller’s husband, Gleizner, will accompany her on piano. As a composer, he has worked as a musical director, orchestrator and arranger in New York City, on Broadway and off-Broadway, and around the world.&nbsp;

The second concert, on Wednesday, will feature 9 Horses, an improvising chamber trio of mandolins, violin and bass.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Featuring original compositions and the genre-hopping virtuosity of Joseph Brent, Sara Caswell and Andrew Ryan, the trio at the core of 9 Horses represents their vision of a musical future with no barrier between folk art and fine art.

The trio will present a workshop the afternoon of that day. Yotefest: A Music Festival for Today features contemporary music encompassing a wide range of genres.&nbsp;

The Salina Symphony will close its season with Passion.&nbsp;

The concert is scheduled for 4 p.m. on May 7 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

From the soaring melodies in Massenet’s Méditation from Thaïs to the timeless tunes from Bizet’s Carmen, this concert will celebrate powerful female voices. The season will conclude with the story of the brilliant woman who changed history in Rimsky-Korsakov’s colorful Scheherazade.

The finale will conclude the first mainstage season under Music Director Yaniv Segal’s artistic leadership of the symphony. 

“This concert provides something for everyone, with classic favorites combined with a co-commission by Jennifer Higdon,” Segal said. “I'm looking forward to ending the season with stories about powerful women and the soaring and colorful melodies of Scheherazade!”

Salina Symphony Concertmaster Denise Blehm will be the featured soloist for the season finale. A Salina native, Blehm has performed as a member of the Salina Symphony for more than 25 years, serving the last 20 seasons as the orchestra’s Concertmaster. She attended Wichita State University and spent 13 years as a member of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Blehm’s performance experience has been welcomed in orchestras across the state, where she has been a featured soloist and frequently performs as a section member.

Salina Symphony to close season May 7 with 'Passion'

Things were going well for Kanopolis Drive In Owner Josh Webb. Then big winds moved through on Dec. 15, 2021. The storm damaged the equipment, and Webb wondered if the drive-in would ever be open again. After using the 2022 season for repairs, Webb is happy to announce the big screen will again be lit up starting May 5.

"During the windstorm, we had our doubts just because the straight-line wind was coming directly out of the west, and our screen faces due west," he said. "When that storm came through, it came directly from Hays and Russell, and it hit the screen pretty square. We were seeing pieces of the fence flying by, and other parts of peoples' sheds and garages were flying by as well."

Webb said the facility had a good nine or 10-year run after he purchased it. Upon surveying the damage after the storm, he realized a reopening was possible. The Drive In is now digital, and the AM pole speakers have been fully replaced by FM sound through the radio.

"I grew up here in Kanopolis," Webb said. "When we bought it, it had been closed for about five years. I didn't want to see it deteriorate and fall down the rest of the way. Back then, it was 35mm. We ran on 35mm for two years, which was neat, then we got it converted to digital. We've seen a lot of people just happy you can park in your car, you can sit in your back chairs and look at the screen, and you're outside."

The Kanopolis Drive In season begins Friday, May 5, and runs through Labor Day. The drive-in offers full concessions, and will offer a double feature every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with new movies every week or every other week.

Salina's Stiefel Theatre has received a nomination from the Academy of Country Music!

In a release made public Thursday, the Academy of Country Music announced that the Stiefel Theatre was one of five venues nominated in the Theatre of the Year category. Other venues competing in the category include the following.

● Crystal Grand Music Theatre – Wisconsin Dells, Wis.

● Florida Theatre – Jacksonville, Fla

She then went on to thank those who helped make the nomination possible.

Salina's Stiefel Theatre receives Academy of Country Music nomination

A regional theatre festival is coming to Salina later this month.

Theatre Salina will host the Region V competition of the American Association of Community Theatre Festival (AACT Fest). Six regional theatres will compete April 20-23 for the privilege to represent their region at the AACT Fest National Conference in June in Louisville, Ky. Theatre Salina has been to national twice: in 2001 in Harrisburg, Pa., with its production of Wit and in 2019 in Gettysburg, Pa., with Silent Sky.

Region V is comprised of theatres from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas. 

At the competition in Salina, the following theatres will present their best: The FungusAmongus Players of Dassel, Minn., will present The End of the Beginning; the County Seat Theater Company of Cloquet, Minn., will do Tracks; the Carousel Theatre of Indianola, Iowa, will do Code Five; the Arkeny Community Theatre of Arkeny, Iowa, will do The Children; the Aberdeen Community Theatre of Aberdeen, S.D., will do Didn’t See That Coming; and Theatre Atchison of Atchison, Kan., will do The Wall.&nbsp;

After each performance, each group will be adjudicated by three seasoned veterans of theatre. The adjudicators for Region V are Morrie Enders executive director of Lincoln (Neb.) Community Playhouse, Kristy Meanor, executive director of the Wetumpka Depot Players, (Ala.), and John Viars, director emeritus of Des Moines Playhouse. &nbsp;

Each theatre has 10 minutes to assemble its set, 60 minutes to perform, and 10 minutes to “strike” its set. These rules were created to allow theatres of all sizes to compete on an equal basis.&nbsp;

The festival will also include a series of workshops of a wide range of topics of interest to theatres. Marco Benitez, director of marketing and communication with Music Theatre of Wichita will present Marketing for Success: The Use of Digital Marketing. Elizabeth-Ali Schade will do Intimacy Coaching exploring this new component of direction in theatre, film, and television. Joshua Morris will present his workshop on creating and building scenic projections. Morrie Enders will give tips of directing musical in community theatre. Maggie Spicer Brown will teach how to create dance and choreography for the non-dancer.&nbsp;

“We are truly excited to host this festival again. We did this event in 2011 just before the Theatre Education Wing was completed. Now that we have the full facility, this should be a more resonant event,” said Theatre Salina Executive Director Michael Spicer. “We are endeavoring to bring theatres from all over the state together on a regular basis to share, learn, and network. We look forward to that kind of participation again.”&nbsp;

On April 23, there will be an awards brunch at the Homewood Suites, which is also serving as the main host hotel for AACT Fest Region V.

Tillis is currently finding a lot of satisfaction mentoring young performers and artists, including those in her all-female acoustic trio, The Rose Rustlers (Haley Sullivan and Carson McKee). “I love mentoring,” she says. “I find myself working with so many Millennial musicians now. They’re accomplished players; none of them need help in the talent department. I’m just trying to pass on some of the things I’ve learned from 30 years of touring and how to navigate a very tough industry.” 

As Tillis stops to count her blessings, she reflects on the bonds she’s made from teaming up with some other female veterans of Country Music, including her fellow ‘90s chart toppers Lorrie Morgan, Suzy Bogguss and Terri Clark. Morgan and Tillis have recorded and toured together as “Grits and Glamour,” and Bogguss and Clark frequently tour with Tillis under the banner “Chicks With Hits,” swapping songs and stories, as only legends-in-the-making can. “I’ve made lifelong friends from these tours,” she says. “It’s the kind of camaraderie I couldn’t find when I was the only gal on the bill with a bunch of male artists.” 

The Grammy winner and Grand Ole Opry member’s talents extend far beyond her recording career – she’s an accomplished actor with an impressive list of credits, including the films The Thing Called Love and The Neon Highway; the Broadway production of Smokey Joe’s Café; and TV shows LA Law, Diagnosis: Murder, Promised Land, Drag Race, Nashville, and Fairwood. “I definitely thrive on variety,” says Tillis, who’s even stepped behind the camera to direct half a dozen music videos. 

Tillis’ latest album, 2020’s Looking For A Feeling, finds her doubling down on one of her first loves – songwriting. She wrote seven of the 11 tracks. Some of her most formative musical years were in the late ‘70s – and the album reflects that ‘70s Country Rock flavor. The many threads of her influences were loosely woven together by hit Country writer/producer Jimmy Ritchey (Mark Chesnutt, Jake Owen) on some tunes and Nashville rocker/producer Joe Pisapia (k.d. lang, Guster) on others. 

The music muse is still providing inspiration and accolades. Tillis is one of the 2022 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame nominees. “It’s a huge honor,” she said. “My dad is in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He would be so proud.” 

After more than three decades of doing what she loves, Tillis jokes, “I guess I’m safely past the ‘flash-in-the-pan’ stage of my career. What keeps me going is learning new things, wearing new hats and trying to stay relevant. I’m still standing, and I’m still grateful.”

Entries in 18 categories of prose and poetry are accepted April 1 to June 15 with cash prizes presented at the club’s writing retreat on Oct. 8. Winners who cannot attend the awards ceremony will receive awards by mail after the event. All residents of the state of Kansas are welcome to enter, and those who are members get discounted entry fees. Members of the club may reside anywhere in Kansas and beyond.

The contest for young writers, grades 3-12, includes categories in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. There are no fees for youth entries. The awards ceremony for young writers will take place this year at the Kansas Book Festival in Topeka on Sept. 16.

A new category in this year’s writing contest for adults is “Rural Voices.” Category description: Rural people and life are often stereotyped and overlooked in writing and other forms of media, but rural life is more complex and divers than what is often portrayed. We want to change that with the addition of this category to our contest. Write a piece (fiction, nonfiction, or poetry) that tells a story about rural living and that represents the many and diverse ways of being and living rural.

“A Moment to Write” is the topic for the 2023 theme contest. In prose, theme entries can be fiction or nonfiction, with a limit of 1,500 words, any genre. In poetry, the theme entries can be of any poetic form. Kansas Authors Club accepting entries for annual contest

A group of Salina South High School students can now say they are published poets.

Nineteen South students had works published in A Celebration of Poets, 2022. Those published poets include the following.

“I value the diverse and engaging content that we look at throughout the year, as well as the various themes and genres we explore,” said Addison Frederking, a sophomore whose work was published. “I think that it really helps kids find what they enjoy in a book or poem.”

Jeri Clouston was the students' Advanced English 1 teacher who incorporated the poetry contest into her lesson plans, according to information from USD 305.

“It was a special opportunity for our students to use what they learned about poems and poetry terms,” said Clouston. “Their final activity for the unit was to write their own poems from a variety of poetry choices.” 

The Creative Communication publishing company accepted 19 for publication. As a result of the students being published, South High was recognized with a Poetic Achievement Award. The award recognizes schools with excellent English Language Arts programs and have more than 50 percent of their total entries accepted for publication, USD 305 noted.

Author Debra Anne Stenstrom will be in the Salina Public Library on Saturday to sign her children's book, It's Okay to Be Different.

The event is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Saturday in the library, 301 W. Elm Street.

Published in November of 2022, It’s Okay to Be Different shares the story of a special needs puppy named Dumplin who was rescued and loved for 10 years. Crippled at birth, Dumplin’s story shows how she was able to overcome obstacles and make the best out of life. With themes of compassion and unconditional love, this book is sure to touch the hearts of its readers, the library noted in a news release.

Debra Anne Stenstrom lived in the Kansas City area for 36 years. After graduating high school in Spring Hill, Kan., in 1975, she studied hospitality management for two years at Johnson County Community College in 1990. She has always had a love for animals, so in 1992, she began working at a Lenexa animal clinic. She went on to become a professional groomer which she continued for nearly 27 years. Currently, she operates a small animal hospital in Junction City with her husband. Her two children and three grandsons also live in Kansas.

Children's book author at Salina Public Library Saturday

Mark your calendars! Salina's Smoky Hill River Festival is less than two months away!

The epic arts party is scheduled for June 8-11 in Oakdale Park, and will include "many changes in food offerings, activities for kids, new roving and mainstage entertainers, and the arts show," according to information from festival staff. General festival hours are June 8, from 4-10 p.m., June 9-10 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and June 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission to the Smoky Hill River Festival is by weekend wristband ($15 in advance and $20 at the gate) available in many local and regional locations beginning May 1, or by daily wristband ($10, sold only at the gate). Children ages 11 and under get in free.

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities staff discussed the highlights of the 2023 festival during a news conference this morning.

As a lead-in to the festival, the Festival Medallion Quest will begin on May 17 with the first clue being given at 4 p.m. on the front steps of the Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Avenue. Clues will be released twice daily, at 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., until the medallion is found. There will be a $3,000 prize package for the winner.

The festival will officially begin at 4 p.m. June 8 when the gates open for the first time this year. The first day will include 35 food booths, an art patron party, and the ever-popular S.M. Hanson Music Festival Jam, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and includes 16 bands playing over the next four hours. Information about the bands will be released by S.M. Hanson Music closer to festival time.

Festival goers on June 9 will get their first look at works by 120 exhibiting artists from 19 states, 64 of whom are new to the festival. There will be affordable artwork to purchase, with prices ranging from $5 to $10,000, according to Crystal Hammerschmidt, visual arts coordinator.

Additionally, more than 20 site-specific art installations will be spread throughout Oakdale Park on festival weekend, including Wind-O-River, a new installation on the Mulberry bridge by Salina artist Rich Bergen. His kinetic sculpture will provide dazzling color as patrons enter the park, festival staff noted.

If music is more your kind of art, you're in for a treat! In addition to Festival Jam on June 8, 56 hours of music performances are scheduled on three stages June 9-10, including a number of bands making their first appearances at the festival, according to Sarah Keck, entertainment coordinator. Music genres will include country, rock, soul, indie folk, and innovative fusion.

June 9 also will be the opening day for Artyopolis, an interactive area for children. This year, Artyopolis will include a new area: Construction Junction. According to festival staffer Susan Eberwein, children can work with unique materials as they create large-scale art. Additionally, Creation Crossing will feature free arts and crafts, and children's favorites Lego Lane and Button Boulevard also will return.

Paramount will take the Eric Stein Stage to close out the June 9 activities. According to staff, there will be giveaways and and a balloon artist, and those attending are encouraged to dress in '80s attire.

June 10 gets off to a fast start with the 42nd annual Smoky Hill River Run, which will include a two-mile walk, children's races, and a two-mile and five-mile electronically timed race. Salina Regional Health Center staff, who are organizing the run, will utilize more than 100 volunteers during the morning's race events.

Children and families also will rush into the festival once the gates open on June 10 to get a spot at First Treasures, a special patron tent for children ages 4-13 years old. Children will be able to select from hundreds of items priced in the $1-to-$5 range that are provided by exhibiting artists.

“This program helps kids learn the power of patronage,” Hammerschmidt said. “Some kids who have aged out of the program are now regular patrons in the art show.”

Festival Saturday will wrap up with Welshly Arms, an alternative rock band, playing diverse music with rock, gospel, and blues influences.

The final day of the festival will include a variety of changes, including a strong local flavor in music, a less hectic environment, and a unique scavenger hunt featuring 100 hand-painted dragonflies that will be hidden throughout Oakdale Park, festival staff noted. Kansas City-based painter and illustrator Evan “Doodle Dood” Brown is painting a flight of colorful metal dragonflies for the hunt. Additionally, 10 dragonflies will be hidden in the park on Friday and Saturday, giving attendees a sneak peek at the creations.

Food Row will include 10 new food vendors, as well as returning favorites throughout the weekend. New food items for this year's festival include the following.

The festival’s new brand, designed by Salina graphic artist Eric Montoy, is featured on this year’s festival t-shirt, according to staff. The gradient-colored shirts are available in the Salina Arts &amp; Humanities offices, online, or at the festival.

The Smoky Hill River Festival relies on approximately 2,000 volunteers each year. Volunteers do anything from helping set up, assisting children, or even simply putting on a smile and greeting everyone as they come and go. It’s all up to the volunteer and their interests, staff noted.

“Volunteers are the backbone of the festival,” said Brad Anderson Salina Arts &amp; Humanities executive director. “We need help with hospitality, in Artyopolis, in technical areas, and at the gates. It’s a great way for people to help the community and keep costs down.”

All festival volunteers and committee members must be 12 years of age or older and 16 years of age or older to operate a golf cart. Volunteers need to purchase admission wristbands to get into Oakdale Park.  </figure><h2>Festival Thursday</h2>The festival will officially begin at 4 p.m. June 8 when the gates open for the first time this year. The first day will include 35 food booths, an art patron party, and the ever-popular S.M. Hanson Music Festival Jam, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and includes 16 bands playing over the next four hours. Information about the bands will be released by S.M. Hanson Music closer to festival time.<h2>Festival Friday</h2>Festival goers on June 9 will get their first look at works by 120 exhibiting artists from 19 states, 64 of whom are new to the festival. There will be affordable artwork to purchase, with prices ranging from $5 to $10,000, according to Crystal Hammerschmidt, visual arts coordinator.Additionally, more than 20 site-specific art installations will be spread throughout Oakdale Park on festival weekend, including Wind-O-River, a new installation on the Mulberry bridge by Salina artist Rich Bergen. His kinetic sculpture will provide dazzling color as patrons enter the park, festival staff noted.If music is more your kind of art, you're in for a treat! According to festival staffer Susan Eberwein, children can work with unique materials as they create large-scale art. Additionally, Creation Crossing will feature free arts and crafts, and children's favorites Lego Lane and Button Boulevard also will return.<figure>

According to staff, there will be giveaways and and a balloon artist, and those attending are encouraged to dress in '80s attire.<h2>Festival Saturday</h2>June 10 gets off to a fast start with the 42nd annual Smoky Hill River Run, which will include a two-mile walk, children's races, and a two-mile and five-mile electronically timed race. Salina Regional Health Center staff, who are organizing the run, will utilize more than 100 volunteers during the morning's race events.Children and families also will rush into the festival once the gates open on June 10 to get a spot at First Treasures, a special patron tent for children ages 4-13 years old. Children will be able to select from hundreds of items priced in the $1-to-$5 range that are provided by exhibiting artists.“This program helps kids learn the power of patronage,” Hammerschmidt said. “Some kids who have aged out of the program are now regular patrons in the art show.”Festival Saturday will wrap up with Welshly Arms, an alternative rock band, playing diverse music with rock, gospel, and blues influences.<figure>

 </figure><h2>Festival Sunday</h2>The final day of the festival will include a variety of changes, including a strong local flavor in music, a less hectic environment, and a unique scavenger hunt featuring 100 hand-painted dragonflies that will be hidden throughout Oakdale Park, festival staff noted. Kansas City-based painter and illustrator Evan “Doodle Dood” Brown is painting a flight of colorful metal dragonflies for the hunt. Additionally, 10 dragonflies will be hidden in the park on Friday and Saturday, giving attendees a sneak peek at the creations.<figure>

Volunteers do anything from helping set up, assisting children, or even simply putting on a smile and greeting everyone as they come and go. It’s all up to the volunteer and their interests, staff noted.“Volunteers are the backbone of the festival,” said Brad Anderson Salina Arts &amp; Humanities executive director. “We need help with hospitality, in Artyopolis, in technical areas, and at the gates. The 39th Salina Spring Poetry Series continues on Tuesday with a reading by Gary Jackson.

The reading will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 135 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Admission will be $5 at the door and free for students with ID.

Huascar Medina, Kansas Poet Laureate Emeritus, curated this year’s series. Medina selected poets with a broad range of perspectives who will share their work in Salina this April.

“Gary Jackson's latest collection, Origin Story, is a must-read. I cannot sing its praises enough. His work is heartfelt and imaginative. Gary's capacity to make the intimate accessible is something to aspire to and admire. When I read Missing You, Metropolis, I realized poetry and pop culture could inhabit the same page without losing sincerity. It opened possibilities for me as a poet,” said Medina.

Born and raised in Topeka, Jackson is the author of the poetry collections Origin Story (University of New Mexico Press, 2021) and Missing You, Metropolis (Graywolf Press, 2010), which received the 2009 Cave Canem Poetry Prize. He’s also the co-editor of The Future of Black: Afrofuturism, Black Comics, and Superhero Poetry (Blair Publishing, 2021). His poems have appeared in numerous journals including Callaloo, The Sun, Los Angeles Review of Books, and Copper Nickel. He’s received fellowships and residencies from Cave Canem, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and Art Omi. He’s published work in Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology and was featured in the 2013 New American Poetry Series by the Poetry Society of America. He’s an associate professor in English and creative writing at the College of Charleston where he’s currently the director of undergraduate creative writing and teaches in the MFA program and serves as the Poetry editor of Swamp Pink.

Salina Central High School Theatre will present a musical comedy murder mystery dinner theatre event later this month.

Killer Karaoke Cadaver, written by Bill and Debbie Weaver of Salina, will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday and April 16 in Martinelli's Little Italy, 158 S. Santa Fe Avenue. The productions are a fundraiser for Thespian Troupe 639. All proceeds will go to fund the students’ trip to the International Thespian Festival in Bloomington, Ind., in June.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the show starting at 7 p.m.

Tickets are only available for presale and are on sale now. Ticket prices for the production are $30 with a $2.85 processing fee for a total of $32.85. UPDATE: Musical comedy murder mystery to benefit Central thespians

A distinguished KWU alumnus is returning to campus, as Jake Montoya ’05 has accepted the position of director of athletic and jazz bands. Montoya will take a leadership role in the Music Department’s recruiting process and will have a role in alumni engagement, as well.

“This is a home run hire for KWU’s music program,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “We believe in community, we believe in the student experience, and we believe that Kansas Wesleyan is a special, unique place that offers something other small colleges do not. Jake Montoya not only shares these feelings but is uniquely positioned to integrate them into this position.”

Montoya brings a litany of experiences to his new role, as he joins KWU after 10 years as the instrumental music director at USD 305. There, he was the director of bands and jazz bands for Lakewood Middle School and assisted with the Salina Central High School band. For his efforts, he was tabbed Secondary Teacher of the Year by the district in 2017-18.

His laurels do not end in the classroom, however. Montoya spent two years as the Salina Symphony’s Junior Symphony director and served as a musician at both Theatre Salina and the symphony for nearly five years.

“Coming back to KWU, for me, is coming home,” said Montoya. “I built roots here and hope to do that for numerous students in the years to come. My goal is to build a program that our students and staff can grow in, to cultivate a family-like atmosphere and create opportunities for everyone to be successful, not only musically but in whatever paths they choose.”

In addition to his significant awards and community contributions, Montoya’s resumé is one of patience and hard work. Prior to his decade at USD 305, he spent eight years at USD 393 in Solomon, where he worked with numerous ensembles and increased the overall size of the band program exponentially. He also was the athletic and activities director for two years, which included overseeing all coaching staff and sponsorships for the district.

“Yes, Kansas Wesleyan is home, but so is this region,” said Montoya, who originally hails from Wyoming. “I have truly grown fond of Salina and the surrounding area, and there are many individuals here who helped me grow into the educator I am today. I’m excited about the opportunity to give back to them and to this wonderful community, and I look forward to building relationships that open tremendous doors for our students.”

“It’s so important to have someone committed to the community in this role,” said Oliver. “When you’re building a program, it takes both professional and community connections to create a culture that enhances the student experience. We see that idea, that philosophy, as an extension of The Power of AND. Few people better embody that philosophy than Jake Montoya.”

Montoya was an adjunct instructor at KWU for two years, teaching primarily guitar, and has taught studio lessons in Salina for nearly 20 years. While a student, he held numerous roles associated with KWU bands, including student director of pep bands, student director of bands and band manager. He was named the outstanding musician in symphonic and jazz ensembles, as well as the outstanding jazz musician, during his time as a Coyote.

“To be selected for this role is truly a gift,” Montoya concluded. “I cannot wait to add to the greatness of the KWU experience, to build a sense of togetherness, and to foster pride in our campus and in who we are as Coyotes. It’s great to be home!”

Montoya will begin his duties on a part-time basis in the coming weeks and will start full-time later this summer.

The 2023 Live First Friday Concert Series kicks off this Friday at the City Lights Stage in downtown Salina.

The Llew Brown Band is scheduled to perform from 6-8 p.m. Friday on the City Lights Stage, which is located at the corner of N. Santa Fe Avenue and W. Ash Street.

"I am so excited to have live entertainment back in Downtown Salina and to welcome everyone back to City Lights Stage! We are thrilled to have all new bands for our First Friday concert series this year and we listened to our community," Leslie Bishop, executive director of Salina Downtown Inc. told Salina Post. "We are starting our concerts later – April and May, the concerts will be from 6-8 p.m. and June, July, August, September the concerts will be from 7-9. It is time to be together again!"

Bishop explained that for every $50 people spent in participating downtown stores and businesses during that time period, they were able to enter the Downtown Dough drawing. Downtown Dough prizes include the following.First Prize: $800 in downtown gift cardsSecond Prize: $500 in downtown gift cardsThird Prize: $250 in downtown gift cards"Winners do not need to be present to win, however, when we call the winners, we will not leave a message, so remember to answer your phone," Bishop said.<figure>

 </figure>In addition to the concert at City Lights Stage, the April First Friday will include an art exhibit and artist reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat, 148 S. Santa Fe Avenue.The art exhibit will feature acrylic paintings by Michael Floria Jilg and jewelry made by Joyce Jilg from discarded objects.
