Saline County seeks input regarding reuse of current jail facility

The Smoky Hills Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) annual meeting is set for Jan. 31.

The meeting is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Jan. 31 at the conference center of Rolling Hills Zoo, 625 N. Hedville Road. A cash bar, tea, water, and light snacks will be provided.

Prior to the meeting, those attending may view the Rolling Hills Museum beginning at 5 p.m. 

Membership in the organization is open to the public regardless of land ownership. Annual dues are $20 per person and will be collected at the meeting.

Topics of the meeting include the following.

●Benefits and ecological roles of prescribed burning

According to information from the organization, "prescribe burning is an effective and efficient tool for management of Conservation Reserve Program, native prairie enhancement, pastureland revitalization, cedar encroachment, and Old World Bluestem invasion. The PBA helps to alleviate the three major landowner burning concerns: manpower, equipment, and training. The membership provide the labor, share  their equipment, and demonstrations and participation on burns provide the training."

Soil Health U is coming to Salina Jan. 18-19

Salina’s free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has announced location and program updates.

Sponsored by Salina Area United Way, the VITA program is returning for its eighth year.

The VITA location is the Salina Area United Way office, 113 N. Seventh Street, where clients can pick up forms in the organization’s lobby to get the process started. Only two individuals or one family will be allowed in the volunteer-staffed lobby. Clients may complete the intake form in their vehicle at the parking site or at home. Detailed instructions on required identification documents are printed on the forms, which must be returned to the United Way lobby no later than March 30.

Once each client’s identity is confirmed, volunteers will make photocopies and safely store them with the required tax return documents in a secure space, complete the individual’s tax return and phone him or her with further instructions. Clients then will return to the VITA office, review and sign their returns, and retrieve all personal documents. VITA volunteers will electronically file each return with the Internal Revenue Service.

VITA services are for moderate and low-income individuals and families (generally $56,000 annual income and below). VITA's IRS-certified volunteers can complete basic federal and Kansas tax returns, including figuring Earned Income and Homestead tax credits.

The Salina VITA program (exclusively drop off) begins Feb. 6, and ends March 30. Drop-off hours are Monday and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Additional VITA volunteers are needed. Individuals interested in helping may contact the Salina Area United Way for this rewarding experience in assisting others.

VITA volunteers cannot help taxpayers who have rental property, farm income, royalties, sale of business property, moving expenses, employee business expenses, military pay, claim depreciation, or have a loss on Schedule C (self-employment).

What do the model of your first car, your favorite hobby, and the high school you attended have in common? If you said they’re questions commonly used for online account security&nbsp;and&nbsp;online quizzes, you’re correct! Before you take a quiz to find out which Marvel character you are, ask yourself: Do I know who’s gathering this information about me — or what they plan to do with it?

Personality tests, quick surveys, and other types of online quizzes ask seemingly harmless questions, but the more information you share, the more you risk it being misused. Scammers could do a lot of damage with just a few answers that give away your personal information. We’ve heard about scammers&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams">phishing&nbsp;</a>for answers to security question data through quizzes. They use your quiz answers to try and reset your accounts, letting them steal your bank and other account information. Some scammers&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recover-your-hacked-email-or-social-media-account">hack social media accounts</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-remove-avoid-malware">send malware links to friends</a>&nbsp;of the hacked account holder under the guise of sharing a quiz.

One major way to protect your personal information — in addition to maintaining strong passwords and using&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/use-two-factor-authentication-protect-your-accounts">multi-factor authentication</a>&nbsp;— is to&nbsp;steer clear of online quizzes…or just don’t answer them truthfully.&nbsp;As for accounts that require actual&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/protect-your-personal-information-data#accounts">security questions</a>,&nbsp;treat them like additional passwords&nbsp;and use random answers, preferably long ones, for those too. Asked to enter your mother’s maiden name? Say it’s something else: Parmesan or another word you’ll remember. Or use a&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/password-checklist">password manager</a>&nbsp;to store a unique answer. This way, scammers won’t be able to use information they find to steal your identity.

If you suspect that an online quiz is a phishing scam, tell a friend. Then, report it to the FTC at&nbsp;<a href="https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/">ReportFraud.ftc.gov</a>.

Between Dec. 15 and Dec. 31, officers with the Salina Police Department took several reports of storage unit burglaries throughout town. Five separate storage unit facilities reported at least 8 storage units were entered.

The locks to the units were cut and removed in each instance. The victims reported over $5,600 of property was stolen from the units.

Legislative hotline available to Kansans

MANHATTAN — The Kansas Department of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension (KSRE) will offer virtual workshops Feb. 6-10, 2023, to assist farmers’ market vendors and managers, and also for those wanting to sell food products directly to consumers. 

The workshop series includes five online Lunch and Learn sessions.

“Over the past two years, we’ve seen an increase in people’s enthusiasm for locally sourced food, and these workshops will address common questions and concerns for farmers and small businesses who are embracing these opportunities to reach local consumers,” said Londa Nwadike, food safety specialist with KSRE and the University of Missouri. “It’s also important for farmers to understand certain legal, safety and financial parameters before choosing to sell either directly to the consumer or at a farmers’ market.” 

In 2022, more than 95 farmers’ markets were registered with KDA’s Central Registration of Farmers’ Markets.

On Dec. 17, officers with the Salina Police Department took a report of a vehicle burglary in the 800 block of W. Walnut Street in Salina. The victim reported their wallet was stolen from the vehicle overnight.

Later in the day, the victim discovered their financial card was used on four occasions at three different businesses in Salina. The suspect arrived at the stores on a blue mountain bike. 

The suspect was a white male, approximately 5'10", 150lbs, possibly in his mid-20 to 30s.

The victim reported their wallet was stolen from the vehicle overnight.Later in the day, the victim discovered their financial card was used on four occasions at three different businesses in Salina. The suspect arrived at the stores on a blue mountain bike. Crimestoppers seeks tips about vehicle burglary, financial card use

Salina Parks and Recreation announced on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalinaParksAndRecreation">Facebook page</a> Thursday that there are four parks serving as Christmas tree drop-off locations.

The four park locations will accept and recycle Christmas trees into mulch through Jan. 31. The mulch will be used around newly planted trees and to surface nature trails.

Christmas trees must be free of ornaments, stands, netting, and plastic bags. Yard waste and artificial trees will not be accepted.
