Smoky Hills PBA annual meeting set for Jan. 31

The Smoky Hills Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) annual meeting is set for Jan. 31.

The meeting is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Jan. 31 at the conference center of Rolling Hills Zoo, 625 N. Hedville Road. A cash bar, tea, water, and light snacks will be provided.

Prior to the meeting, those attending may view the Rolling Hills Museum beginning at 5 p.m.

Membership in the organization is open to the public regardless of land ownership. Annual dues are $20 per person and will be collected at the meeting.

Topics of the meeting include the following.

●Benefits and ecological roles of prescribed burning

●The value of community involvement

●Burn planning and preparation

●Liability concerns

●2023 PBA burn schedule

According to information from the organization, "prescribe burning is an effective and efficient tool for management of Conservation Reserve Program, native prairie enhancement, pastureland revitalization, cedar encroachment, and Old World Bluestem invasion. The PBA helps to alleviate the three major landowner burning concerns: manpower, equipment, and training. The membership provide the labor, share their equipment, and demonstrations and participation on burns provide the training."
