The Commodity Supplemental Food Program is available in Saline County to persons age 60 and above who qualify by meeting income requirements.

Interested seniors must fill out an application and provide the following:&nbsp; proof of ID, proof of income (Social Security Statement) and proof of address.&nbsp; Once approved, they will receive a monthly food box.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Classes are available morning or evening and attended by students two days a week.&nbsp; Students will also have required out of class assignments to enhance learning, that are built for adult students who are working jobs, parenting or handling other life commitments.&nbsp; Planning for a few hours a week is helpful for SAEC students to complete those assignments.

GED and College Skill Building classes focus on math, reading, writing and employment readiness.&nbsp; ESL classes focus on English language acquisition including speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Onsite classes should resume at the SAEC location as Salina County COVID-19 numbers start to diminish.&nbsp; Those classes will also be two days a week, morning or evening.&nbsp; Keep in contact with SAEC staff for more information on when on site classes resume.

GREAT BEND - Barton Community College’s annual literary publication, Prairie Ink, has begun accepting entries for its 12th edition.&nbsp;

Editor Scott McDonald said the aim of the publication is to provide a venue for local authors to showcase their creative writing talents.

The editors are looking for the following types of original work to be considered for publication: fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, drama, and graphic short stories. They will be accepting submissions until April 1, 2021.

Barton students, alumni and all residents of the seven counties in Barton’s service region: Barton, Pawnee, Rush, Russell, Rice, Stafford and Ellsworth counties, as well as Barton’s Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth and Grandview Plaza campuses are encouraged to submit entries.

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 vaccine update for Thursday.

Planning to receive your COVID-19 vaccine in Saline County just got easier thanks to a collaboration between Salina Family Healthcare Center, Saline County Health Department, and Salina Regional Health Center.

“We are so pleased that 900 people, most of whom are senior citizens, were able to receive their vaccine this week,” said Jason Tiller, Saline County Health Officer. “Now that we have more clarity from the state about how much vaccine we will have and how often it will be delivered, we’ve been able to create a more long-term sustainable solution to vaccine scheduling.”

Last week the County Health Partners opened 900 appointments, representing all 900 doses of vaccine available, and in under 30 minute every appointment had been claimed.

The new system works by way of registry. Sponsored by Salina Area United Way, the VITA program has implemented processes designed to protect the health and safety of trained volunteers and clients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new VITA location is the Salina Area United Way office, 113 North Seventh Street, where clients can pick up forms in the organization’s lobby to get the process started.&nbsp; Only one individual or one family, all wearing masks, will be allowed in the volunteer-staffed lobby at all times.&nbsp; Clients may complete the intake form in their vehicle at the parking site or at home.&nbsp; Detailed instructions on required identification documents are printed on the forms, which must be returned to the United Way lobby no later than March 29, 2021.&nbsp;

Once each client’s identity is confirmed, volunteers will make photocopies of the appropriate ID information and safely store them with the required tax return documents in a secure space, complete the individual’s tax return and phone him or her with further instructions.&nbsp; Clients then will return to the VITA office, review, and sign their returns, and retrieve all personal documents.&nbsp; 

VITA volunteers will electronically file each return with the Internal Revenue Service.

VITA services are for moderate and low-income individuals and families (generally $56,000 annual income and below). VITA's IRS-certified volunteers can complete basic federal and Kansas tax returns, including figuring Earned Income and Homestead tax credits.

The Salina VITA program (exclusively drop off) begins Monday and ends March 29. Drop-off and pick-up hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays; noon to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Additional VITA volunteers are needed.&nbsp; Individuals interested in helping may contact the Salina Area United Way for this rewarding experience in assisting others.

VITA tax season begins Monday with Salina Area United Way

It’s often said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but we are not flattered at all by a scam website designed to look like a Federal Trade Commission site and steal your money.&nbsp;

The imposter calls itself the US Trading Commission and uses the FTC’s seal and address. It claims it operates a “personal data protection fund” to compensate people whose personal information has been exposed on the web. The site says you can “instantly receive” a cash payment by clicking on some links and giving the site your personal data and bank account or electronic wallet information. Of course, if you do that, your money will be gone, you may download malware onto your device, and scammers can misuse your personal information to steal your identity.

The site pops up as a YouTube link and has used several different URLs. It promises that payment “is available to residents of all countries of the world.” People as far away as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Latvia have reported the site to the FTC, and several have reported losing money.

Here’s what you need to know. The FTC does shut down scams and return money to people who lost it to dishonest or unfair business practices. But we will never ask for money, or for your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number so that you can get a refund. If the FTC needs to get money to you, we usually send a check through the mail. You can learn about our refund programs at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/refunds">FTC.gov/refunds</a>.

It claims it operates a “personal data protection fund” to compensate people whose personal information has been exposed on the web. The site says you can “instantly receive” a cash payment by clicking on some links and giving the site your personal data and bank account or electronic wallet information. Of course, if you do that, your money will be gone, you may download malware onto your device, and scammers can misuse your personal information to steal your identity.The site pops up as a YouTube link and has used several different URLs. It promises that payment “is available to residents of all countries of the world.” People as far away as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Latvia have reported the site to the FTC, and several have reported losing money.Here’s what you need to know. The FTC does shut down scams and return money to people who lost it to dishonest or unfair business practices. But we will never ask for money, or for your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number so that you can get a refund. If the FTC needs to get money to you, we usually send a check through the mail. There’s a new coronavirus-related scam making the rounds, but this time the crooks are targeting small businesses. 

It starts with an email that claims to come from the “Small Business Administration Office of Disaster Assistance.” It says you’re eligible for a loan of up to $250,000 and asks for personal information like birth date and Social Security number. 

Let’s do a CSI-style investigation to spot clues that the email is a fake.

Clue No. 1.&nbsp;You got an email or phone call out of the blue that claims to be from the IRS, the Social Security Administration, or – in this case – the Small Business Administration. The FTC has warned about&nbsp;<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0048-government-imposter-scams">government imposter scams&nbsp;</a>like this.

Clue No. 2. You were told that you’re automatically eligible for a big loan. Real lenders never do this.

Clue No. 3. You’re asked to hand over your date of birth and Social Security number. This is a tip-off that the sender is trying to steal your personal information.

Phishing attempts aren’t the only scam that business owners are reporting. We’ve heard from people who have applied for loans through websites pretending to be part of the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program, which has been extended to December 31, 2021. And other people report they’ve been contacted to repay loans they never took out. The likely culprits? Criminals who illegally applied for loans in their name.

Here are steps you can take to help protect yourself.

Check your credit report.&nbsp;The worst time to learn that someone has taken out a loan in your name is when you’re applying for a loan yourself. So check your credit report first at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.annualcreditreport.com/">www.annualcreditreport.com</a>, the authorized source for the free reports consumers are guaranteed by law. In addition, the three major credit bureaus are offering free weekly online reports to consumers through April 2021. If you’re not in the market for credit or a loan,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0497-credit-freeze-faqs">freezing your credit&nbsp;</a>offers an extra – and free – measure of protection.

Or reach out to a trusted financial institution in your community.

Check out lenders before sharing personal information.&nbsp;Scammers who impersonate lenders have the perfect excuse to ask you for lots of personal information that can be used to steal your identity. Don’t leave a trail of personal information exposed by filling out lots of applications online with lenders you don’t know. Investigate lenders first and if you spot something amiss, stop. And then file a report at&nbsp;<a href="https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/">ReportFraud.ftc.gov</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

FTC: Small business owners are target for new COVID scam

New health apps are popping up every day, promising to help you track your health conditions, count your calories, manage your medications, or predict your ovulation. These apps often ask for some of your most sensitive personal information, like your health history, medication list, or whether you have ever suffered a miscarriage.

Some apps use that sensitive information only to give you services. But others may use it for their own research, to target you with ads, or disclose — or even sell — your data to other companies. And, unlike your doctor, these apps may not be covered by health privacy laws like HIPAA.

For example, Flo is a health app that functions as an ovulation calendar, period tracker, and pregnancy guide. In a settlement announced today, the <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2021/01/developer-popular-womens-fertility-tracking-app-settles-ftc">FTC said that the makers of the Flo app </a>shared users’ personal health information with marketing and analytics companies like Facebook and Google — even though it had promised users to keep this sensitive information private. As part of the settlement, Flo Health, Inc. has agreed to get users’ consent before it can share their information in the future. The settlement also requires Flo to get an outside review of the honesty of its privacy promises.

How can you avoid the risks associated with these types of health apps? Here are some things to consider:

●Compare privacy protections.&nbsp;Many competing health apps offer similar services. When choosing between apps, compare their privacy protections. Look for a privacy notice that explains in simple terms what health information the app collects from you, as well as how it uses and shares your information with other companies and users. If the app shares your information, does it tell you why, and does it limit what others can do with it?

●Take control of your sensitive information.&nbsp;Take a look at the app’s settings to see if it gives you control over what health information it collects and shares. An app’s default settings often encourage sharing, so it can be useful to select more protective options.

●Keep your app up to date.&nbsp;App updates sometimes include important fixes for privacy or security glitches. One of the best ways to protect your information is to keep your app (and your phone’s operating system) up to date.

●Recognize the risks.&nbsp;What sensitive information will the app have access to? Are the app’s services worth the risk of someone else getting hold of that? Some companies don’t uphold their privacy promises. In this case, we said that even if you reviewed Flo’s privacy promises and looked at the settings, your information could still have been disclosed to other companies. Sharing sensitive information always carries risks, so be sure you’re comfortable with what you’ve shared, in case privacy promises aren’t kept.

●Report your concerns.&nbsp;If you think a health app isn’t keeping up its end of the bargain,&nbsp;let the FTC know. The FTC regularly brings enforcement actions against companies that misrepresent how they use or disclose people’s sensitive health information.

Library announces 2021 Reading Challenge

WASHINGTON – Today, the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department will begin delivering a second round of Economic Impact Payments as part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 to millions of Americans who received the first round of payments earlier this year. The initial direct deposit payments may begin arriving as early as tonight for some and will continue into next week. Paper checks will begin to be mailed tomorrow (Wednesday, Dec. 30). The IRS emphasizes that there is no action required by eligible individuals to receive this second payment. Some Americans may see the direct deposit payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before the official payment date of Jan. 4, 2021. The IRS reminds taxpayers that the payments are automatic, and they should not contact their financial institutions or the IRS with payment timing questions. As with the first round of payments under the CARES Act, most recipients will receive these payments by direct deposit. For Social Security and other beneficiaries who received the first round of payments via Direct Express, they will receive this second payment the same way. Anyone who received the first round of payments earlier this year but doesn’t receive a payment via direct deposit will generally receive a check or, in some instances, a debit card. For those in this category, the payments will conclude in January. If additional legislation is enacted to provide for an additional amount, the Economic Impact Payments that have been issued will be topped up as quickly as possible. Eligible individuals who did not receive an Economic Impact Payment this year – either the first or the second payment – will be able to claim it when they file their 2020 taxes in 2021. The IRS urges taxpayers who didn’t receive a payment this year to review the eligibility criteria when they file their 2020 taxes; many people, including recent college graduates, may be eligible to claim it. People will see the Economic Impact Payments (EIP) referred to as the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR since the EIPs are an advance payment of the RRC. “Throughout this challenging year, the IRS has worked around the clock to provide Economic Impact Payments and critical taxpayer services to the American people,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “We are working swiftly to distribute this second round of payments as quickly as possible. This work continues throughout the holidays and into the new year as we prepare for the upcoming filing season. We urge everyone to visit IRS.gov in the coming days for the latest information on these payments and for important information and assistance with filing their 2021 taxes.” Authorized by the newly enacted COVID-relief legislation, the second round of payments, or “EIP 2,” is generally $600 for singles and $1,200 for married couples filing a joint return. In addition, those with qualifying children will also receive $600 for each qualifying child. Dependents who are 17 and older are not eligible for the child payment. Payments are automatic for eligible taxpayers Payments are automatic for eligible taxpayers who filed a 2019 tax return, those who receive Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits (SSDI), Railroad Retirement benefits as well as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who didn’t file a tax return. Payments are also automatic for anyone who successfully registered for the first payment online at IRS.gov using the agency’s Non-Filers tool by Nov. 21, 2020 or who submitted a simplified tax return that has been processed by the IRS. Who is eligible for the second Economic Impact Payment? Generally, U.S. citizens and resident aliens who are not eligible to be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s income tax return are eligible for this second payment. Eligible individuals will automatically receive an Economic Impact Payment of up to $600 for individuals or $1,200 for married couples and up to $600 for each qualifying child. Generally, if you have adjusted gross income for 2019 up to $75,000 for individuals and up to $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns and surviving spouses, you will receive the full amount of the second payment. For filers with income above those amounts, the payment amount is reduced.

How do I find out if the IRS is sending me a payment? People can check the status of both their first and second payments by using the Get My Payment tool, available in English and Spanish only on IRS.gov. The tool is being updated with new information, and the IRS anticipates the tool will be available again in a few days for taxpayers.

How will the IRS know where to send my payment? What if I changed bank accounts? The IRS will use the data already in our systems to send the new payments. Taxpayers with direct deposit information on file will receive the payment that way. For those without current direct deposit information on file, they will receive the payment as a check or debit card in the mail. For those eligible but who don’t receive the payment for any reason, it can be claimed by filing a 2020 tax return in 2021. Remember, the Economic Impact Payments are an advance payment of what will be called the Recovery Rebate Credit on the 2020 Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.

Will people receive a paper check or a debit card? For those who don’t receive a direct deposit by early January, they should watch their mail for either a paper check or a debit card. To speed delivery of the payments to reach as many people as soon as possible, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, part of the Treasury Department, will be sending a limited number of payments out by debit card. Please note that the form of payment for the second mailed EIP may be different than for the first mailed EIP. Some people who received a paper check last time might receive a debit card this time, and some people who received a debit card last time may receive a paper check. IRS and Treasury urge eligible people who don’t receive a direct deposit to watch their mail carefully during this period for a check or an Economic Impact Payment card, which is sponsored by the Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service and is issued by Treasury’s financial agent, MetaBank®, N.A. The Economic Impact Payment Card will be sent in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal. It has the Visa name on the front of the Card and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A. on the back of the card. Information included with the card will explain that this is your Economic Impact Payment. More information about these cards is available at EIPcard.com. Are more people eligible now for a payment than before? Under the earlier CARES Act, joint returns of couples where only one member of the couple had a Social Security number were generally ineligible for a payment – unless they were a member of the military. But this month’s new law changes and expands that provision, and more people are now eligible. In this situation, these families will now be eligible to receive payments for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs. People in this group who don’t receive an Economic Impact Payment can claim this when they file their 2020 taxes under the Recovery Rebate Credit. Is any action needed by Social Security beneficiaries, railroad retirees and those receiving veterans’ benefits who are not typically required to file a tax return? Most Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees and those receiving veterans’ benefits do not need take any action to receive a payment. Earlier this year, the IRS worked directly with the relevant federal agencies to obtain the information needed to send out the new payments the same way benefits for this group are normally paid. For eligible people in this group who didn’t receive a payment for any reason, they can file a 2020 tax return. I didn’t file a tax return and didn’t register with the IRS.gov non-filers tool. Am I eligible for a payment? Yes, if you meet the eligibility requirement. While you won’t receive an automatic payment now, you can still claim the equivalent Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 federal income tax return.

Will I receive anything for my tax records showing I received a second Economic Impact Payment? Yes. People will receive an IRS notice, or letter, after they receive a payment telling them the amount of their payment. They should keep this for their tax records.

Where can I get more information? For more information about Economic Impact Payments and the 2020 Recovery Rebate, key information will be posted on <a href="http://IRS.gov/eip">IRS.gov/eip</a>. People can check the status of both their first and second payments by using the Get My Payment tool, available in English and Spanish only on IRS.gov. The tool is being updated with new information, and the IRS anticipates the tool will be available again in a few days for taxpayers.How will the IRS know where to send my payment? What if I changed bank accounts? The IRS will use the data already in our systems to send the new payments. Taxpayers with direct deposit information on file will receive the payment that way. For those without current direct deposit information on file, they will receive the payment as a check or debit card in the mail. For those eligible but who don’t receive the payment for any reason, it can be claimed by filing a 2020 tax return in 2021. Remember, the Economic Impact Payments are an advance payment of what will be called the Recovery Rebate Credit on the 2020 Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR. In this situation, these families will now be eligible to receive payments for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs. People in this group who don’t receive an Economic Impact Payment can claim this when they file their 2020 taxes under the Recovery Rebate Credit. Is any action needed by Social Security beneficiaries, railroad retirees and those receiving veterans’ benefits who are not typically required to file a tax return? Most Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees and those receiving veterans’ benefits do not need take any action to receive a payment. Earlier this year, the IRS worked directly with the relevant federal agencies to obtain the information needed to send out the new payments the same way benefits for this group are normally paid. For eligible people in this group who didn’t receive a payment for any reason, they can file a 2020 tax return. I didn’t file a tax return and didn’t register with the IRS.gov non-filers tool. Am I eligible for a payment? Yes, if you meet the eligibility requirement. While you won’t receive an automatic payment now, you can still claim the equivalent Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 federal income tax return.Will I receive anything for my tax records showing I received a second Economic Impact Payment? Four park locations in Salina will accept and recycle Christmas trees into mulch through Jan. 31, 2021. The mulch will be used around newly planted trees and to surface nature trails.

Christmas trees must be free of ornaments, stands, netting and plastic bags. Yard waste will not be accepted.

“The KSHL is an important voice for older Kansans and caregivers as our state’s population continues to age,” said Julie Govert Walter, executive director of the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA). “Each year, KSHL delegates learn political processes as they identify and discuss issues, develop and craft bills and resolutions and present priority bills to Kansas Legislators.”

Important COVID-19 information for donors

As COVID-19 hospitalizations increase, hospital demand for convalescent plasma has also grown. COVID-19 convalescent plasma is a type of blood donation given by those who've recovered from this coronavirus. Their plasma contains antibodies that may help patients actively fighting the virus.

The Red Cross&nbsp;is&nbsp;testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether an individual developed COVID-19 symptoms.&nbsp;Red Cross antibody tests will be helpful to identify individuals who have COVID-19 antibodies and may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. Convalescent plasma is a type of blood donation collected from COVID-19 survivors that have antibodies that may help patients who are actively fighting the virus.

COVID-19 antibody test results will be available&nbsp;within one to two weeks in the Red Cross Blood Donor App or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. A positive antibody test result does not confirm infection or immunity.&nbsp;The Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose illness, referred to as a diagnostic test. To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, it is important that individuals who do not feel well or believe they may be ill with COVID-19 postpone donation.
