The Salina Souperbowl of Hope needs your help.

"We are asking businesses and churches to help us with our goal of collecting 55,000 cans of soup to be distributed between the Salina Food Bank, Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, Ashby House, and DVACK," Superbowl of Hope coordinators noted in a news release.  

Cans of soup and donations are being collected until Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021.

In addition to cans of soup, monetary donations also will be accepted.

"$25 will allow us to buy 60 cans of soup," the organization noted in the news release. 

Donations may be taken to the Salina Emergency Food Bank or call 785-452-5008 for pickup.

The Smoky Hill Museum staff is in the planning process for upcoming exhibits for the spring of 2022 and beyond, and seeks the opinion of community members to help guide their decisions. 

The museum staff is asking community members to take the survey titled "Upcoming SHM Exhibits" at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/23VCYKC?fbclid=IwAR13fAeN9eS63lHLnH6Y_Z09vFEzPwUWp4XN21FjOHybk4YDE-pUD1yE1CI" target="_blank">https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/23VCYKC</a>.&nbsp;

The survey should only take a couple of minutes. Everyone’s feedback is important, the museum staff noted in a news release.

Visitors can currently see the special exhibit,&nbsp;The 1950s Part 2: Beyond the American Dream, through April 10, 2021. The museum typically produces two special exhibits a year and plans exhibits anywhere from two to four years out.

“It is important to stay relevant and the best way to do that is through community input,” said Museum Director Susan Hawksworth.

The museum, 211 West Iron Avenue, is open to the public Tuesdays-Fridays 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is free.

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service, state tax agencies and the tax industry today warned of a new text scam created by thieves that trick people into disclosing bank account information under the guise of receiving the $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.

The IRS, states and industry, working together as the Security Summit, remind taxpayers that neither the IRS nor state agencies will ever text taxpayers asking for bank account information so that an EIP deposit may be made.

“Criminals are relentlessly using COVID-19 and Economic Impact Payments as cover to try to trick taxpayers out of their money or identities,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “This scam is a new twist on those we’ve been seeing much of this year. We urge people to remain alert to these types of scams.”

The scam text message states: “You have received a direct deposit of $1,200 from COVID-19 TREAS FUND. Further action is required to accept this payment into your account. Continue here to accept this payment …” The text includes a link to a fake phishing web address.

This fake phishing URL, which appears to come from a state agency or relief organization, takes recipients to a fraudulent website that impersonates the IRS.gov Get My Payment website. Individuals who visit the fraudulent website and then enter their personal and financial account information will have their information collected by these scammers.

People who receive this text scam should take a screen shot of the text message that they received and then include the screenshot in an email to&nbsp;<a href="mailto:phishing@irs.gov" target="_blank">phishing@irs.gov</a>&nbsp;with the following information:

●Date/Time/Timezone that they received the text message. 

●The number that appeared on their Caller ID. 

●The number that received the text message

The IRS does not send unsolicited texts or emails. The IRS does not call people with threats of jail or lawsuits, nor does it demand tax payments on gift cards.

People who believe they are eligible for the Economic Impact Payment should go directly to IRS.gov. People who do not have a filing requirement but who are eligible for EIP can use a non-filers tool on <a href="http://IRS.gov">IRS.gov</a> until Nov. 21 to claim their payment.

Imposter scams often begin with a call, text message, or email. <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/feature-0037-imposter-scams">The scams may vary</a>, but work the same way – a scammer pretends to be someone you trust to convince you to send them money or share personal information.

Scammers may ask you to transfer money from you bank, wire money using a company like Western Union or MoneyGram, put money on a gift card, or send cryptocurrency, because they know these types of payments can be hard to reverse. Scammers call, email, or text and claim to be:&nbsp;

●A family member&nbsp;(or someone acting for them), saying your relative is sick, has been arrested, or is in serious trouble and needs money right away.

●From Social Security, claiming that COVID-19-related office closures mean your benefits have been suspended.

●From your bank, claiming they need to verify personal information before they can send you a new debit or credit card.

Follow these tips to help protect your money and personal information:

●Be suspicious of any call from a government agency asking for money or information.&nbsp;Government agencies don’t use threats and they don’t call you with promises of – or demands for – money.

●Don’t trust caller ID&nbsp;– it can be faked.

●Never pay with a gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency&nbsp;to anyone who tells you to.

●Check with the real agency, person, or company.&nbsp;Don’t use the phone number they give you. Look it up yourself.

Do you wish you could save time&nbsp;investigating&nbsp;the memes and questionable news stories filling your social media feeds?&nbsp;Ever wish the person who shared it had fact-checked it&nbsp;before they shared?&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fortunately, librarians at K-State Libraries are sharing resources and tools you can use to identify false news stories that run across your feed.

First, it can help to remember that social media was not designed as a news outlet.&nbsp;

"If your feeds have become&nbsp;flooded with content that makes you feel more emotional&nbsp;than informed,&nbsp;you can choose to hide those posts and get your news from legitimate news outlets and research organizations," said Sara K. Kearns, professor and academic services librarian with K-State Libraries.

If you do want to run down the fact-checking road, Kearns recommends that you find out if someone has already done the work for you&nbsp;before you lace up your shoes. The following sites not only investigate the stories, but they also provide you with more information to back up their claims.

FactCheck.org is a nonpartisan organization that has investigated politics since 2003. They also fact-check science claims. Kearns says these fact-checking sites establish, publish and follow their own investigation guidelines. Sometimes, the researchers clearly confirm or refute the stories. They also provide enough information for the user to come to their own conclusions about more nuanced issues.

Wildfires raging out West. The hurricane season. Civil unrest. And all of this happening during a global pandemic that has claimed its own devastating share of deaths and cost people their livelihoods. In response to these events, the season of giving is starting even before the usual holidays, since we all just want to help where and as we can.

But shameless scammers want to help themselves to your money. And they’re competing with legitimate charities, taking advantage of your generosity. So, as you open your heart and wallet to help people and causes, be sure to consider the following tips for safe giving.

●Never let anyone rush you into donating. Pressuring you to act right away is something that scammers do.

●Don’t assume the charity appeals you see&nbsp;online or on social media&nbsp;are legitimate, even if someone you know sends them to you. Even if a group sounds legit, know that some scammers use names that sound like real charities, only they’re not. 

●Before you donate,&nbsp;research the name&nbsp;of the organization or cause. Search their name online, plus the words “scam,” “fraud,” or “complaint.”

●Find out if the charity or fundraiser is registered in your state. Check with your&nbsp;state’s charity regulator&nbsp;to find out. If the charity isn’t registered, consider donating elsewhere.

Food service available for USD 305 student learning remotely

Even in the best of years, teachers often purchase their own supplies to make sure their classrooms are adequately prepared for the school year. Then along comes the COVID-19 pandemic, potentially adding to the need for out-of-pocket supplies.

A local woman wants to do something about that for the teachers in Saline County.

Penny Thompson recently started a Facebook page to connect Saline County teachers in need of classroom supplies with community members willing to help out.

The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/996247750819888/">Support a Classroom - Saline Co. Kansas</a> group currently has more than 650 members and is open to both Saline County teachers and community members who want to help them.

"I just saw this on the news the other night that a lady in Wichita started a Facebook group to help out teachers. I thought what a great idea so I just put it out there," Thomson explained.

Thompson said she comes from a family with many teachers.

"I know how much money people spend out of their own pockets," she said.

"It's about our teachers and providing them with the items they need to provide a safe environment for our kids," added Amanda Morris, who helps Thompson administer the group.

Both Thompson and Morris said they would like to see the group be an ongoing effort to help out teachers.

"That would be awesome and as teachers see things or have things come up during the middle of the year, people could reach out," Thompson said.

"We have suggested to teachers to use a wishlist like Amazon which does automatically update. Those are easiest for people to order and send," Morris explained. "Individuals can also coordinate with teachers or me to get items to them. I've asked teachers that have specific needs and individuals who are fulfilling those needs to post on the request so we know what happening."

Additionally, they are looking at options for people who want to help but don't do Facebook, including doing some sort of fundraising event, she added.

Thompson said she was excited to see the response thus far.

"I counted 45 people who have asked for support and there’s been multiple people who have reached out. Pretty exciting to know that the community is ready to help," she said.

She said more than 700 rain gauges are located in neighborhoods throughout Kansas, but more are needed. “Ideally, we might have one on every block to capture differences that a storm might produce across the state,” Knapp said.

Sometimes, Knapp noted, a storm can dump varying amounts of rainfall from one side of a town to the other – and sometimes even from one side of a street to the other. The CoCoRaHS network relies on citizens using a calibrated gauge, often located in their own yard, to report rainfall in their area.

“By deploying additional rain gauges and getting people to report those observations, we get a better picture of what is happening with a storm,” she said. “If people are interested, it’s a very good way to get involved with monitoring the weather.”

The Saline County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad has a reputation for helping out in a crisis. Now they're helping out in a pandemic. 

Starting immediately, the Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad will begin offering assistance to citizens in the higher risk category for COVID-19, primarily, those with contributing conditions such as compromised immune systems or our more senior citizens, the organization noted in a news release. The service is possible, in part, thanks to a $2,000 grant from the Salina Area United Way's&nbsp;COVID-19 Relief Fund.

According to information from the Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad, members will pick up essential items for these persons and deliver those to their locations in Saline County. Items such as groceries, prescriptions and other essential items can be ordered through the source of choice with arrangements for the Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad to pick these items up and deliver them.

To get assistance simply call Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad Commander Bill Cooke at 620-200-2931 or Deputy Cain Humphrey at 785-826-6393. Assistance will be given in the order that requests are received.

On March 18, the chamber announced that it has launched a website&nbsp; -- titled “Salina Strong” -- to keep the chamber membership and business community up to date on business resources, workforce information, restaurant and retail businesses offering delivery, take-out, and curbside options, health and safety updates, and remote working tools.
