The incident occurred at The Heritage at Hawthorne Village Apartments, 715 N. Ninth Street.

The investigation revealed several indentations of the man’s front door, which appears to be bullet strikes.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about shooting at apartment complex

SANTA FE, N.M.&nbsp;- The National Park Service (NPS) is currently working on the Pike National Historic Trail Feasibility Study, and public input is needed. 

The study will evaluate the eligibility, suitability, and feasibility of designating the route taken by Zebulon Pike’s 1806-1807 expedition as a new national historic trail.

Lieutenant Zebulon Pike’s expedition was among the first United States government-ordered, American led explorations into the southern portions of the Louisiana Purchase. The expedition traveled approximately 2,700 miles in present-day Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas, with an additional 1,000 miles of trail in Mexico.

The NPS will hold a series of virtual public meetings in May and June, 2021. Everyone with an interest in the trail and its history are invited to attend. Each on-line meeting will provide an opportunity to learn about the trail study process, ask questions, and submit written comments to be included in the report.&nbsp;&nbsp;Meetings are organized by state.&nbsp;One meeting will be conducted in Spanish.

Voluntary practice period begins Saturday

TOPEKA – Kansans who live in area codes 785 or 620 will soon be required to use&nbsp;10-digit&nbsp;dialing when making local calls. This change will make it easier for persons in crisis to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Last July, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved 988 as the new abbreviated number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. As a result, any area code that uses the 988 prefix in telephone numbers is mandated by the FCC to adopt&nbsp;10-digit&nbsp;dialing.&nbsp; That includes Kansas area codes 785 and 620, which cover the majority of the state. In total, 82 area codes in 36 states will make the change.

It will take time to get in the habit of using&nbsp;10-digit&nbsp;dialing (example: 785-XXX-XXXX), so a practice period has been established.&nbsp; Callers are encouraged to begin using&nbsp;10-digit&nbsp;calling on&nbsp;Saturday. Any calls dialed with seven digits will still go through during this practice period.

Beginning&nbsp;Oct. 24, callers in 785 and 620 area codes must use&nbsp;10-digit&nbsp;dialing or the call will not go through. The only exceptions are any three&nbsp;digit&nbsp;abbreviated numbers available in the community, such as 911. Callers will still dial 1 + the area code and telephone number for all long distance calls.

Beginning&nbsp;July 16, 2022, callers can reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling 988. Until then, callers will continue to dial 1-800-273-8255 (TALK).

Ten-digit dialing begins Saturday in Kansas area codes 785, 620

Scammers are doubling down on their efforts to scam people out of their money and personal information. That’s why the FTC and the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) are teaming up to remind you: No matter what anyone tells you, you can’t buy COVID-19 vaccines online and there’s no out-of-pocket cost to get the shots.

Here are some ways to avoid a vaccine-related scam:

●Ignore online ads, social media posts, or phone calls from people offering to sell you the COVID-19 vaccine.&nbsp;You can’t buy it — anywhere. The vaccine is only available at federal- and state-approved locations.

 ●Don’t pay to sign up for the vaccine.&nbsp;Anyone who asks for a payment to put you on a list, make an appointment for you, or reserve a spot in line is a scammer.

●Don’t pay out of pocket for a vaccine&nbsp;— not before, during, or after your appointment. That’s either a scam or a mistake. If you’re insured, the vaccination site might bill your insurance company for an administration fee. If you’re not insured, there’s a fund set up with the&nbsp;Health Resources &amp; Services Administration&nbsp;(HRSA — part of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) where sites can recover their administrative costs. Either way, though, they’re not supposed to bill you or charge a co-pay.

 ●Never share your personal, financial, or health information with people you don’t know.&nbsp;No one from a vaccine distribution site, health care provider’s office, pharmacy, or health care payer, like a private insurance company or Medicare, will call, text, or email you asking for your credit card or bank account number to sign you up to get the vaccine. And remember, you’re not required to give your Social Security number to a vaccination site. You shouldn’t be turned away.

●Contact a trusted source for information.&nbsp;Check with state or local health departments to learn when and how to get the COVID-19 vaccine. You can also talk with your health care provider or pharmacist.

●Don’t post your vaccination card to your social media account. Your vaccination card has information on it including your full name, date of birth, where you got your vaccine, and the dates you got it. When you post it to Facebook, Instagram, or to some other social media platform, you may be handing valuable information over to someone who could use it for identity theft.

On April 13, Salina Police investigated usage of a stolen credit card on March 25 at two locations in Salina. 

 One was at Pilot, 1944 N. Ninth Street, for more than $580, and the other at Petro, 2125 N. Ninth Street, for more than $650. 

 The suspect who used the card appeared to be a white male in his early 20s.  He was wearing a gray or blue field hat, black and gray jacket, gloves, and pants.

To help boost money management skills, including ways to save, manage debt and handle credit, K-State Research and Extension is offering the&nbsp;<a href="https://kstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cD9prK0uabDkW4S" target="_blank">Wallet Wisdom</a>&nbsp;program, which are six free webinars in April and May. &nbsp;

The webinars will be presented Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. CDT via Zoom, beginning April 22. With just one registration, participants can access just one or all six webinars. Time is allowed for questions and answers. For privacy reasons, only the host will be able to see who is asking the questions. All sessions will be recorded for participants to view at their convenience any time. &nbsp;

Your credit report has a summary of your credit history. For example, if you’ve been evicted and a landlord turns uncollected rent over to a collection agency, that might be on your credit report. Information in your credit report affects your credit score. That’s important because businesses — like insurance and phone companies — use your credit score to decide whether to give you a policy or service, and what rate to offer. And potential employers and landlords also might check your credit.

So you want to know that the information on your report is accurate. And if it’s wrong, you want to make sure someone didn’t steal your identity.

●Order your free credit report. Go to&nbsp;<a href="http://AnnualCreditReport.com">AnnualCreditReport.com</a>&nbsp;or call 877-322-8228. Until the end of the pandemic, everyone in the U.S. can get a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2021/03/free-weekly-credit-reports-during-covid-extended-until-april-2022">free credit report each week</a>&nbsp;from all three national credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion).

OCCK Transportation has announced a new option for scheduling rides on services, including Regional Paratransit, City of Abilene, Med-A-Van, and the discounted taxi ride programs.&nbsp;

Riders are now able to use the online reservation form found under “Ride” on the website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinacitygo.com/" target="_blank">salinacitygo.com</a>&nbsp;to schedule rides for Regional Paratransit, City of Abilene, Med-A-Van, and the discounted taxi ride programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;Previously, the only option was by phone.&nbsp;

“We’ve been working hard to improve the quality of service and convenience for all of our paratransit riders,” said Angela Sanchez, Administrative Coordinator for OCCK Transportation. “By offering an online scheduling option, we are bringing significant improvements to our paratransit experience.”

All paratransit services do have an application process.&nbsp;&nbsp;New riders must be approved before scheduling.&nbsp;&nbsp;Existing riders that are already approved can use the online form at any time.&nbsp;&nbsp;Questions can be directed to the Transportation Office at 785-826-1583, option 6.

A number of American Red Cross blood drives are scheduled for multiple locations in Saline County over the next few weeks.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, from accident victims to children battling cancer to mothers giving birth, according to information from the Red Cross. Healthy volunteer donors are the key to helping save lives. Medical conditions and emergencies don’t stop for a pandemic.

As of now, the Red Cross will continue to test for COVID antibodies through May 2021. Additionally, the Red Cross staff continues to follow the strictest of CDC and FDA safety guidelines to keep donors, volunteers, and staff safe!

OCCK, Inc. is now accepting applications for its More Than You Think Scholarship for 2021. 

The new scholarship was established as part of the 50th&nbsp;Anniversary celebration of OCCK in 2020, as a long term reminder of the good work that past generations have done, and that future generations will do, in working with people with disabilities in north central Kansas.&nbsp;

The More Than You Think Scholarship recognizes and honors students in north central Kansas from Saline, Ottawa, Cloud, Republic, Jewell, Mitchell, Lincoln, Ellsworth or Dickinson counties, who have a disability and are looking to further their education by enrolling in some type of post-secondary learning opportunity (college, university, community college, vocational school, cosmetology school, etc.)&nbsp;&nbsp;Any type of credentialed program will be considered.&nbsp;

“OCCK is proud to celebrate fifty years of partnerships and services in north central Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are excited to sponsor this scholarship fund so people with disabilities can add to their skills through education,” said Shelia Nelson-Stout, President/CEO of OCCK. “OCCK is committed to investing in our communities and we believe education is a strong tool that allows people to pursue jobs and careers.”

To apply, applicants must complete the scholarship application, and include two letters of reference.&nbsp;&nbsp;Applications are due May 1, 2021. Multiple winners may be selected in amounts up to $500 each.
