The Saline County Vaccination Collaboration has announced two walk-up and drive-through COVID-19 vaccination clinics for Salina.

The first clinic is scheduled for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot at Ace Hardware, 309 S. Broadway Boulevard. No appointment is necessary.

Johnson &amp; Johnson and Moderna vaccines will be available, according to the collaboration.

The second clinic is scheduled for 2-6 p.m. June 18 at the gym on the St. Francis Ministries campus, 110 W. Otis Avenue. No appointment is necessary.

Johnson &amp; Johnson and Pfizer vaccines will be available, according to the collaboration.

Additionally, free COVID-19 testing will be available at the second clinic.

Part of W. Cloud Street will close on Monday for utility work.

On Monday, AT&amp;T will close the westbound lane of W. Cloud Street west of the S. Ninth Street intersection to service their facilities, according to information from the City of Salina. 

During the work, left turns from northbound S. Ninth Street to westbound W. Cloud Street and from eastbound W. Cloud Street to northbound S. Ninth Street will be restricted to facilitate the rest of the traffic movements through the intersection. 

Through traffic is encouraged to avoid the intersection altogether during the work. 

Weather permitting, the work will proceed around the clock and will be completed on Friday, the city noted.

The Salina Public Library has announced that summer lunches four youth will once again be available beginning Tuesday.

Lunches for youth ages 18 and under will be served Monday-Friday from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Lunches will be available June 1-July 30.&nbsp;Meals will be available while supplies last.

The City of Salina has announced that surface maintenance on some city streets will continue this week.

Tuesday through Saturday, APAC Shears
of Salina will continue the city’s annual ultrathin bonded asphalt
surface (UBAS) maintenance on the following streets for the City of Salina, weather
permitting:

Residential streets will be closed to
traffic between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. while the work is being
completed.&nbsp; Motorists should avoid work
zones altogether or proceed with caution for the safety of the crews performing
the work.

This type of preventative maintenance is
fairly new to Salina but has been used to help extend the life of many roads
around the State of Kansas.&nbsp; It consists
of a thin, coarse aggregate hot mix over a special asphalt membrane similar to
a chip seal but placed in one pass with a spray paver.&nbsp; The membrane prevents water intrusion and
provides a superior bond to the old asphalt.&nbsp;
The overlay can disperse water quickly off the surface, which reduces
roadway spray from vehicles and provides greater visibility and traction in wet
weather.&nbsp; UBAS has performed well for
other cities and provides a good friction surface in wet weather.&nbsp; UBAS can be installed quickly, and asserts a
longer life-span (8-10 years) than micro-surfacing (6-7 years).

The $725,000 project is a major part of the City of
Salina’s $4.7 million 2021 maintenance capital improvement program.

Summer fun has begun at the Salina Public Library.

Through July 29, the library is offering the All Around Town scavenger hunt. The American Red Cross has scheduled a number of blood drives in Saline over the next few weeks to help avoid a blood shortage.

"While Americans begin to resume normal seasonal activities, the Red Cross is concerned about the impact this may have on blood donor turnout and the blood supply this summer. Since May 1, we have seen a huge decrease in donor turn-out, further impacting our life-saving inventory. Help us prevent a blood shortage!" the American Red Cross' Teri Novotny urged.

As long as you're symptom free, feeling well, and can provide the name of the manufacturer of the vaccine you received, there’s no blood donation waiting period after getting a COVID-19 vaccine currently authorized in the U.S. Get additional Red Cross blood donation eligibility info: <a href="http://rcblood.org/eligibility">rcblood.org/eligibility</a>.

City: Outdoor watering prohibited between 10 a.m.-6 p.m. beginning June 1

Spring and summer are hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking seasons. It is also the time of year when ticks are out. 

Here are a few tips to keep you safe from looming tick bites. From the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/kdwpt/">Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism</a> Facebook page:

DRESS – Wear protective clothing when practical. Light-colored clothing helps make ticks more visible. When hiking, wear a long-sleeved shirt tucked into pants, long pants tucked into high socks and over-the-ankle shoes to keep ticks out.

DEET – Insect repellents also reduce the risk of bites. When outdoors, use insect repellant containing 20 to 30 percent DEET on exposed skin and clothing for protection that lasts up to several hours.

AVOID – Ticks are usually found on vegetation close to the ground. In addition to regular mowing, avoid wooded or bushy areas with tall grass and leaf litter, and walk in the center of trails.

CHECK - Check yourself at least every two hours for ticks when outside for extended periods of time. Pay special attention to areas in and around your hair, ears, armpits, groin, navel and backs of the knees. Promptly remove a tick if one is found. The sooner a tick is removed, the less chance it has to transmit a disease to its host. If you find a tick, grasp the tick with tweezers as close to the skin as possible and slowly pull it straight out. Do not crush or puncture the tick and try to avoid touching the tick with your bare hands. Thoroughly disinfect the bite area and wash your hands immediately after removal. Also examine pets and gear, as ticks can ride into the home on animals, coats, backpacks, blankets, etc.

Residents will be asked to remove their cars from streets to facilitate the work, which will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years. Approximately 31 centerline miles of streets will be sealed in 2021.

The $460,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2021 maintenance capital improvement program.

Crack sealing work on city streets continues

On Tuesday (May 18), Salina Police Officers were dispatched to investigate a burglary of a construction trailer at 118 W. Iron Avenue.

 Based on the investigation, the crime was determined to have happened at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

• Craftsman red toolbox with misc. tools valued at $2,000

• Milwaukee power tools valued collectively at $1,500

• Misc. set of electrical tools valued at $300

The stolen and damaged property is valued at approximately $3,980. The letters "CH" are written on the power tools and batteries.

SES offering sack lunches, breakfasts for students this summer

Salina USD 305 has announced the details of its Summer Food Service Program's Free Grab-and-Go Lunch.

All children ages 1-18 are eligible for the free meals, which are scheduled to be distributed 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 15-July 23. Children must be present to receive the meals. Additionally, adult meals will be available for $5 per meal.

No meals will be served July 5-6, the district noted in a news release. Should there be a severe weather warning, the meal sites will be closed.

No sign-up or paperwork is required for children to participate in the program, according to information from the district.

Drive-through or walk-up distribution will be available at eight sites across the city. They are as follows.

Central High School, 650 E. Crawford Street

Cottonwood Elementary School, 215 S. Phillips Avenue

Heartland Early Education, 700 Jupiter Avenue

Heusner Elementary School, 1300 Norton Street

Schilling Elementary School, 3121 Canterbury Drive

Sunset Elementary School, 1510 W. Republic Avenue

Additionally, the Salina Area United Way's RAWR (Raising Active, Wild Readers) book giveaway program will be at the meal sites on specific days to distribute free books to children. Those dates are as follows.

Saline County has announced that it will close part of S. Holmes Road for culvert work.

According to information from the Saline County Road and Bridge Department, S. Holmes Road between E. Magnolia Road and E. Schilling Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday for replacement of a cross-road drainage culvert. Weather permitting the roadway will be opened by June 4. 

 Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

During May, the FTC and federal and state organizations nationwide will celebrate <a href="https://acl.gov/oam/2021/older-americans-month-2021">Older Americans Month</a>, with “Communities of Strength” as its theme. The FTC works to protect older adults year round, through law enforcement actions and the <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/feature-0030-pass-it">Pass It On</a> fraud prevention campaign. Pass It On encourages people to share what they know to protect someone from a fraud, and to be a resource that others can turn to.

<a>The FTC has taken several </a><a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2020/10/ftc-issues-annual-report-congress-protecting-older-adults">recent enforcement actions</a> to protect older adults. For example, it’s sued companies that tried to trick people into work-at-home and other moneymaking schemes, bogus credit card interest rate reduction offers, and health claims that aren’t supported by the necessary science. Some of those claims were related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While scammers are busy, <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/feature-0030-pass-it">Pass It On</a> gives older adults and the people who work with them tools to fight those frauds. The campaign’s fact sheets explain 13 fraud topics, including <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/pass-it-on/imposter-scams/grandkid-scams">grandchild</a> and <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/pass-it-on/imposter-scams/online-dating-scams">romance scams</a>, <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/pass-it-on/unwanted-calls">unwanted calls</a>, and <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/pass-it-on/work-at-home-scams">work-at-home scams</a>. The campaign leverages the rich experience and accumulated knowledge of older adults, and gives them information they can pass on to family and friends, starting conversations and sharing their expertise.
