Online enrollment for returning students set for USD 305

If you regularly travel on Broadway Boulevard, you might want to consider an alternate route this week.

The City of Salina announced that Monday through Friday, APAC Shears of Salina will continue working on the city’s annual asphalt mill and inlay project. The schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

The work consists of milling the existing asphalt street surface 1.5” and replacing it with new asphalt to rehabilitate and preserve the pavement section.  Permanent pavement markings will be placed shortly after the resurfacing.

The work will be completed with lane closures.  Motorists should expect modest delays, and through traffic is encouraged to avoid the work zones altogether if possible.

The $811,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2020 maintenance capital improvement program.

On June 10, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2400 block of E. Water Well Road for the report of a vehicle burglary. 

Sometime between 9 a.m. and noon on June 10, unknown suspect(s) entered the victim’s vehicle that was parked in a parking lot and stole the victim’s debit card and credit card.

Later on June 10, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office took a second report of a vehicle burglary that had occurred in the 3000 block of S. Holmes Road in Saline County.

Sometime between 10-11 a.m. on June 10 unknown suspect(s) entered the victim’s locked vehicle that was parked in a parking lot and stole the victim’s credit card.

On June 10, the credit and debit cards from both victims were used at Walmart in Salina to purchase items that includes multiple $200 prepaid gift cards. The suspects were two unidentified white males.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about two men who used stolen cards for purchases

The nation is in the midst of a severe blood shortage and the need for donations is more critical than ever.

According to the American Red Cross, a rise trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries requiring blood products over recent months has depleted the nation’s blood inventory. The demand for blood from hospitals with trauma centers rose by 10 percent in 2021 compared to 2019. That's more than five times the growth of demand for blood at other facilities that provide transfusions.

“The Red Cross is currently experiencing a severe blood shortage,” said Chris Hrouda, president of Red Cross Biomedical Services. “Our teams are working around the clock to meet the extraordinary blood needs of hospitals and patients – distributing about 75,000 more blood products than expected over the past three months to meet demand – but we can’t do it without donors. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.”

According to information from the American Red Cross, hospitals are responding to an atypically high number of traumas and emergency room visits. Twenty to 40 percent of trauma deaths that occur after hospital admission involve massive hemorrhaging. In these dire circumstances, doctors may need hundreds of blood products, depending on the severity of the trauma, to help save a life, the American Red Cross noted.

Patients who deferred care during the height of the pandemic also are straining blood supplies as many now have more advanced disease progression and require more transfusions.

“Some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply stabilizes, delaying crucial patient care. As we return to pre-pandemic activities and resume travel to visit loved ones, we want people to remember the needs of patients this summer and the power so many of us have to help save lives,” Hrouda said.

The American Red Cross noted that there is an emergency need for type O donors. Type O is the most needed blood group by hospitals, as type O positive is the most transfused blood type and can be transfused to Rh-positive patients of any blood type. Additionally, type O negative is the universal blood type and what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations, the American Red Cross reported.

An emergency need also exists for platelets, the clotting portion of blood, which must be transfused within five days of being donated. The American Red Cross explained that nearly half of all platelet donations are given to patients undergoing cancer treatments – a disease all too familiar to millions of Americans and their families.

Numerous blood drives are scheduled through the end of June.

The annual PUMP Up The Volume Salina Community Blood Drive is scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit Avenue. The blood drive is sponsored by Eagle Radio and its entities: 99 KG, 94.5 Prime FM, KINA, and Salina Post.

Radio listeners are challenged to donate during the three-day drive and vote for their favorite participating radio station. The winning station receives bragging rights and a traveling trophy to display for a year.

Since 2010, the Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive has raised more than 4,125 donations, according to information from the American Red Cross. This year’s goal is 234 donations.

Healthy donors are asked to make an appointment to give at this year’s Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive by using the Blood Donor App, visiting <a href="http://RedCrossBlood.org">RedCrossBlood.org</a>, calling 1-800-733-2767 or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

WICHITA — The American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries rise&nbsp;– and deplete the nation’s blood inventory.

Right now, hospitals are responding to an atypically high number of traumas and emergency room visits, as well as overdoses and resulting transplants. In comparison to 2019, the Red Cross has seen demand from trauma centers climb by 10% in 2021− more than five times the growth of other facilities that provide blood transfusions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“When seconds count in emergency trauma situations, it’s the blood already on the shelves that can make the difference in lifesaving care,” said Dr. Matthew Coleman, medical director, Red Cross Kansas Oklahoma Region. “As many people begin to enjoy travel and time with loved ones again this summer, patients are relying on the generosity of donors to help ensure they have access to the treatment they need. Please consider blood donation as a summer activity that can help save lives.”

In addition to trauma needs, there is a great hospital demand for blood as people who deferred care during the height of the pandemic present with more advanced disease progression, requiring increased blood transfusions. Over the last three months, the Red Cross has distributed about 75,000 more blood products than expected to meet these needs. As a result of this shortage, some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply stabilizes. Blood is perishable and cannot be stockpiled, so it must constantly be replenished by generous blood donors.

As more than a third of Americans&nbsp;have&nbsp;become fully vaccinated against COVID-19,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Red Cross&nbsp;is winding down COVID-19 antibody testing for&nbsp;blood,&nbsp;platelet&nbsp;and plasma&nbsp;donations.&nbsp;

Some individuals with sickle cell disease may require as&nbsp;many as 100 units of blood per year.

Auditions for the first comedy mystery dinner theater production of the Salina Vagabond Players, “A Murderous Reunion,” will be from 6 to 8 p.m. June 25 and 26 at The Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe, north entrance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The script calls for three men and three women, ages not limited. Characters include a brainiac, drama queen, class jock, aging cheerleader, innocent young ingenue and the&nbsp;black sheep of the class. Some singing and dance movements will be involved.&nbsp;

The show will be performed Aug. 13, 14, 20, and 21 at Martinelli's Little Italy, 158 S. Santa Fe. Tickets for the production will include dinner and dessert. A cash bar also will be available.&nbsp;

Rehearsals for “A Murderous Reunion” will begin July 12 and will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday.&nbsp;

Auditions set for murder mystery comedy 

Salina USD 305 has announced the details of its Summer Food Service Program's Free Grab-and-Go Lunch.

All children ages 1-18 are eligible for the free meals, which are scheduled to be distributed 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 15-July 23. Children must be present to receive the meals. Additionally, adult meals will be available for $5 per meal.

No meals will be served July 5-6, the district noted in a news release. Should there be a severe weather warning, the meal sites will be closed.

No sign-up or paperwork is required for children to participate in the program, according to information from the district.

Drive-through or walk-up distribution will be available at eight sites across the city. They are as follows.

The city has announced that it will be closing a portion of N. Delaware Avenue for pavement work.

Beginning Monday, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be replacing sections of pavement on N. Delaware Avenue, north of E. Iron Avenue.

Healthy donors are asked to make an appointment to give at this year’s Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive by using the Blood Donor App, visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://redcrossblood.org/">RedCrossBlood.org</a>, calling 1-800-733-2767 or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

All who donate June 14-30 will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift card by email. Restrictions apply and are available at&nbsp;<a href="http://redcrossblood.org/SummerFullOfLife">RedCrossBlood.org/SummerFullOfLife</a>.

According to the American Red Cross, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented challenges to blood donations and in the care and treatment of cancer patients. The Red Cross continues to feel the ongoing effects of COVID-19 as each month roughly 1,000 drives are canceled, impacting the collection of approximately 30,000 units of lifesaving blood.

Additionally, the American Cancer Society reported that many patient visits and procedures were forced to be delayed or canceled early in the pandemic to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. According to the American Cancer Society, while cancer deaths dropped at the onset of the pandemic, those rates will likely increase in the months and years to come due to delays in diagnosis and treatment

This June, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time. Many cancer patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy, will likely have a need for blood products. When donors give blood or platelets to the Red Cross, they’re helping cancer patients receive the care they need.

Chiefs seek artists to help with gameday posters

OCCK Transportation has announced the new Guide &amp; Go Travel Training program that will teach people how to use public transportation services in the region.

The first class in the Guide &amp; Go program is CityGo Familiarization.&nbsp; &nbsp;Other classes will be available in the future.&nbsp;

CityGo Familiarization teaches the basics of riding CityGo in Salina, including how to read the map and time table, fare payments, and general etiquette.&nbsp;

At this time, all classes will be held virtually, and will last about one hour, with the following schedule for CityGo Familiarization for June and July.

Additional classes will be announced as they are scheduled.

Participation in Travel Training is free, however participants must have internet access and be able to pick up the class packet.&nbsp; Sign up can be done online at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinacitygo.com/guide-go-travel-training/" target="_blank">www.salinacitygo.com/guide-go-travel-training/</a>&nbsp;or by calling 785-826-1583.
