SALINA – Millie Moye’s longtime dream is to see a thriving Boys &amp; Girls Club of Salina serving local kids and teens.

“As a mother of two, grandmother of three, great-grandmother of seven, and sister to 14 siblings, I have had the privilege of teaching thousands of students throughout my life,” said Millie Moye. “For over 20 years, I have carried a dream close to my heart: to establish a Boys &amp; Girls Club in Salina, Kansas. I’ve shared this vision with my husband and anyone who would listen, fueled by a deep desire to create a safe space that offers mentorship, friendship, fun, and a sense of belonging.”

Millie’s enthusiasm for the project is contagious. In 2023, a local advisory group was established to transform her dream into reality. Group members include Millie Moye, Roy and Donice Applequist, Jon Blanchard, Heidi Brown, Gabe Grant, Annie Grevas, Nikki Kerwin, Greta Lagerberg, Brenda McDaniel, Nancy Presnal, Mike Schrage, and Phil Smith-Hanes. 

Meeting the “basic needs” of youth is a guiding principle for Boys and Girls Clubs of America. The advisory group’s research indicates that many young people in Salina are struggling with a lack of stability and safety, academic success, sense of belonging, poverty issues, encouragement, support, and positive role modeling.

“From the data gathered in our community, we believe there is not only the need for additional support for our youth, but most particularly, from an organization that specializes in serving and supporting youth needs,” said Greta Lagerberg, an advisory group member and retired counselor for USD 305. “The Boys &amp; Girls Club is a perfect fit. We are honored to be a part of doing the work to create a place for Salina’s youth to grow, for we know that today’s students will be tomorrow’s workforce and citizens.”

The Salina advisory group is working closely with the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson to navigate the many steps to opening a successful Club afterschool and summer program for Salina students.

“This community group is so dedicated and driven to make something great for kids,” said Lance Patterson, CEO of the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson. “I am happy that we can help make it happen.

With the opening of a fund, we are one step closer to changing lives in Salina.” Today the group is one step closer to a Boys &amp; Girls Club in Salina. An organizational fund has been established at the Greater Salina Community Foundation. Group members are actively raising funds. 

To make a gift for the 2024 tax year, interested donors are encouraged to postmark a check or give online at gscf.org before December 31. Gifts for the Boys &amp; Girls Club of Salina Fund should note that they are “nonendowed” to ensure they can be used for operations and capital to establish a Club site.

The Greater Salina Community foundation accepts gifts of cash and check, as well as noncash gifts including retirement plans, stocks, cryptocurrency, life insurance, grain, livestock, closely held stock, real estate and tangible personal property.

“The Boys and Girls Club will be an investment in a healthier, more economically thriving community,” said Millie Moye. “For me, this is not just a dream—it’s a mission to leave Salina better for the generations to come.

Mid-November marks the peak of the deer rut season, a time when deer are more active as they search for mates, increasing the likelihood of vehicle collisions. Since November 11, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office has responded to 11 deer-related crashes, with only one resulting in minor injuries, according to Saline County Sheriff's Office Operations Captain Jim Hughes.

It is important not to swerve to avoid hitting a deer, as that can result in a more serious crash, potentially involving other vehicles or objects off the road.

Drivers are advised to reduce speed in areas where deer are commonly seen, especially at dawn and dusk, and to use high beams when appropriate to improve visibility.

Always wear your seatbelt and ensure children are in appropriate safety seats. Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic, and scan for the reflective eyes of deer along the roadway.

The Salina League of Women Voters held its 2024 General Election Forum on Oct. 20 at 1:30 in the Watson Room at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Kansas Highway Patrol It’s a busy time for farmers in Kansas with fall harvest underway. The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to use more caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines, and other implements.

“As the busy farming season is underway, each traveler in Kansas needs to be more aware of increased farm implement and truck traffic,” said Captain Candice Breshears. “In Kansas, we have many trucks exiting and entering the roadways at any given time. Traveling around these vehicles requires extra caution.”

Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than the lane of traffic, so extra room should be allowed when sharing the road. Caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on busy rural roads with unmarked intersections.

Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re there.

Although most farmers regularly check for vehicles behind them, the majority of their focus must be spent looking ahead to stay on the road and watch for oncoming traffic. Implements are very loud, hindering their ability to hear your vehicle.

Don’t pass unless you can see clearly ahead of both your vehicle and the equipment you are passing. If there are curves or hills blocking your view, wait until you can clearly visualize the area you are passing in. You should not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone,” even if you are stuck behind a farm vehicle. Do not pass if you are within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel.

When a farm vehicle pulls to the right side of the road, it does not mean it is turning right or allowing you to pass.

Due to the size of some farm equipment, the farmer must execute wide left turns, so allow it plenty of room and time to turn and remain aware of any potential driveway or field they may be turning into.

Don’t assume that a farmer can move aside to let you pass. Shoulders may be soft, wet, or steep, which can cause the farm vehicle to tip, or the shoulder may not support the weight of a heavy farm vehicle. They understand you are being delayed and will move over at the first safe location available.

Think of the slow-moving vehicle emblem as a warning to adjust your speed.

When you see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, immediately slow down. While the emblems are visible from a long distance, it is difficult to judge the speed at which you are closing in on the vehicle, especially at night.

When you are not focused solely on the road, you increase your chances of a collision, especially if you should come upon a slow-moving farm vehicle.

KHP: Extra caution needed on Kansas roads during harvest

In 2023 alone, the Mission served over 63,000 meals and is currently providing shelter and opportunities to 80-85 men each night. Many in our community may not realize that we offer lunch and supper to anyone in need, seven days a week. Breakfast is served exclusively to our residents. Every meal served and every life transformed is made possible by the generosity of donors.

As a Christian ministry, the Salina Rescue Mission receives no government funding. Instead, we rely on the faith and kindness of our community to live out the Biblical model of loving and caring for neighbors in need. This matching gift challenge is a unique opportunity for donors to maximize the impact of their generosity, making a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most.

🎙King in the Community — Chad Young, Salina Grace, Salina Rescue Mission

The winter solstice is an important and yet complicated time of year. The shortest days and longest nights of winter affect us both physically and mentally as gardeners and as people in general. Yet, the darkness of the longest night of the year also marks the beginning of a season filled with new light and hope. This duality—of darkness giving way to light—makes the solstice a profound time for reflection and renewal.

This is a key message of the Christmas season: when it is darkest, something new is going to begin. It’s a reminder that even in challenging times, growth and transformation are possible.

Gardeners are familiar with starting seeds, and nowhere is this message clearer than in the process of watching a new seedling germinate out of the darkness of the soil. In fact, some garden seeds actually require the darkness in order to germinate.

A good example of this is the state flower of Kansas, the sunflower. This beautiful summer flower, with its rich and historic symbolism, actually must begin its growth in the dark. The first step is the softening of a hard seed coat. This happens in the darkness of the soil, where the dry seed imbibes (drinks) water. This allows the seed to expand and activates enzymes and food supplies that are needed for the new growth to emerge.

The first thing to emerge from the softened seed is the root (also called the radicle). After this, the shoot will expand and emerge from the seed. Once the shoot breaks through the dark soil and into the light, dramatic changes occur. Perhaps one of the most remarkable transformations is how it turns green. This color change is part of a process called photomorphogenesis, and it allows the shoot to capture light energy and begin photosynthesis.

Without a time of darkness in the moist soil, the tough sunflower seed coat simply won’t soften to allow the new growth to begin. This time in the dark is the essential first step in reaching the light.

In many ways, I can relate. It often takes a period of ‘seed coat softening’ for me to grow as well. Times where challenges or pain make my world feel dark often end up being the very place where something new needs to begin. Pride can give way to a willingness to receive and to grow, just as the seed opens itself to the nourishment of the soil.

As gardeners, we have the privilege of witnessing this transformation in plants and reflecting on its deeper meaning. Every seed we plant holds a promise of renewal and a reminder that growth often starts in places of darkness. Whether it’s a sunflower, a tomato, or a patch of wildflowers, the process is the same: growth emerges not in spite of the dark, but because of it.

During the winter, when outdoor gardening is limited, why not embrace seed starting as an act of hope? Start some seeds indoors to watch the process unfold in real time. Reflect on the ways this process mirrors our own lives—how challenges and dark times soften our hard seed coats and prepare us for new beginnings.

Local organizers have partnered with community contacts in North Carolina to coordinate the donation of essential items, such as hats, gloves, and socks for both kids and adults. Additionally, Walmart and CVS gift cards in various increments are being requested to assist families in purchasing clothing, food, prescriptions, and other necessities.

Children come to the Sedgwick County Department of Corrections youth intake facility, where he’s the director. They’re already kicked out of school and have nothing to do all day. So, the county corrections department started offering classes.&nbsp;

The kids get at least four months of schooling, and they might also get anger management, grief and trauma counseling. Stonehouse said about 100 children are getting help.&nbsp;

It’s all part of the county’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.doc.ks.gov/juvenile-services/committee/documentation/april-21st-2023/sedgwick-co-evening-reporting-center/view">Evening Reporting Center</a>.&nbsp;

“We have a pretty high tolerance for behavior issues and things like that,” Stonehouse said, adding that youth aren’t kicked out of the program for behavior that would get them kicked out elsewhere.&nbsp;

The programming is funded through a statewide grant designed to help Kansas youth avoid future run-ins with the criminal justice system. Programs in Sedgwick County offer a model of how some people think the money can change a child’s life.&nbsp;

“We pick all the kids up. We provide the transportation. We provide meals and we provide the services,” Stonehouse said. “We take away all the barriers.”

There’s just one problem. Community groups have struggled to get the grant funding, and it isn’t clear yet if recent legislative action has fixed the problem.&nbsp;

In 2023, the state planned to spend $36.3 million on evidence-based programs for minors. Only $9.8 million was spent. Kansas spent more in 2024, divvying out $21.5 million out of a $37.1 million budget.&nbsp;

Donald Hymer, assistant district attorney in Johnson County, is the chair of the group that recommends how the money is spent. The group doesn’t make the final budget decisions, but it has input.&nbsp;

He said the leftover money comes from some groups that overestimate how many children they will help and end up returning some cash. That’s an example of how hard it is to estimate the need for certain programs.&nbsp;

Other groups don’t know the money exists and don’t apply. And for some, the money comes with strict requirements. Before 2024, the money could only be spent on evidence-based programs, which is the highest standard possible.&nbsp;

Stonehouse said his county corrections department has enough staff to go through proper training and keep data on evidence-based programs to meet the grant requirements. Smaller grassroots groups can’t afford to send staff away for training and don’t have the capacity to track data.

“It can be overkill,” Stonehouse said. “Not everybody needs an evidence-based program.”

The Kansas Legislature&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2023_24/measures/documents/summary_hb_2021_2023">made it easier</a>&nbsp;to hand out money from the evidence-based fund this year. It OK’d funds to help both the juvenile and their family, which wasn’t previously allowed. The money is also eligible for a broader range of behavioral health issues.&nbsp;

Hymer said he’s happy with how the Legislature has set up the fund, and “the only thing left would be to expand to consider preventative resources or preventative programs.”

Senator-elect Stephen Owens, a Hesston Republican and current House member, recommended lawmakers look again during the 2025 session at the requirements, even though the new changes are less than five months old.&nbsp;

Gov. Laura Kelly has taken $20 million out of the fund before and put it into state general funds. That money was returned, but then lawmakers voted on a motion earlier this year to take $17 million out of the fund again.&nbsp;

“We just want to protect those funds and make sure that they’re helping the kids that they were designed to help,” Owens said.&nbsp;

Mike Fonkert, deputy director of Kansas Appleseed — a group focused on juvenile justice — said his group wants the money to help as many youth as possible. But he said there is a danger of making the money too available.&nbsp;

If that money can be used on more programs and more services, Fonkert said, it might get spread too thin to help the children it was designed for — kids in the criminal justice system.&nbsp;

Fonkert said some at the Statehouse have the perception that none of the money is being spent. That’s not true.&nbsp;

He said the state has done a good job of allocating the money overall, and state officials have been open to helping groups manage the grant process. Could more be done? Perhaps. But Fonkert said the money is accessible now.

The Legislature returns in January, when House and Senate committees are expected to further debate the rules around spending the money.&nbsp;

LAWRENCE, Kan. -&nbsp;Ray Bechard, the winningest coach in Kansas volleyball history and a five-time Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, announced his retirement Friday after 27 seasons at the helm.

Bechard, who coached 26 All-Americans during his time at Kansas and led the Jayhawks to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, amassed a 496-313 record at KU. His .613 winning percentage is the best by a Kansas volleyball coach in program history.

“It’s been the honor of a lifetime to fulfill the role as Head Volleyball Coach at the University of Kansas for the last 27 years,” Bechard said. “This professional journey was made possible by a supportive administration, a coaching staff that worked tirelessly and together and by countless young women who competed with grit and demonstrated grace, while representing the university with class.

“I’m proud of what we accomplished during my time at Kansas; we built a program that was nationally competitive and nationally respected.”

A Grinnell, Kansas native, Bechard took the reins of his dream job in 1998 after 13 seasons at Barton County Community College. He rewrote the Kansas volleyball record books, including being named the 2015 National Coach of the Year after leading the Jayhawks to the Final Four. He is also a member of the Kansas Volleyball Association Hall of Fame, the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and is a three-time AVCA Region Coach of the Year.

A Jayhawk to the core, Bechard coached his daughter, Ashley, for four seasons at KU. His son Brennan, played for the men’s basketball team and currently serves as the program’s Director of Scouting.

“Ray Bechard is a University of Kansas icon and has had one of the most influential and accomplished careers in college volleyball,” Kansas Director of Athletics Travis Goff said. “We are forever grateful for the incredible impact he made on so many in our athletic department, with his student-athletes being at the forefront. Coach B enriched the lives of countless people and is the architect of a program that has flourished on and off the court throughout his tenure. We will miss him dearly and will work with the same intensity and passion he coached with to continue the legacy he built.”

Throughout his Kansas career, Bechard led the Jayhawks to the NCAA Tournament 13 times, including three Sweet 16 appearances and a spot in the National Semifinals in 2015. Kansas also finished the season in the AVCA Top 25 rankings seven times. Prior to his arrival, Kansas had never qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The longtime coach finished his illustrious career in style, posting winning seasons in 16 of his final 17 seasons leading the program. Additionally during his tenure, Kansas unveiled Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena in 2019, a result of the program’s success and popularity under Bechard.

Not only did Bechard leave an indelible mark at Kansas, but he also cemented himself as one of the best coaches ever in the Big 12 Conference. He finishes his career with 238 Big 12 wins, which ranks second all-time. He departs the league having coached more Big 12 matches than any coach in conference history. Bechard’s success at Kansas followed a brilliant career at Barton, where he won 92 percent of his matches (716-90), won 13 conference championships and advanced to 10 NJCAA Final Fours.

“We are grateful for all Coach Bechard has done for our university and our student-athletes during his remarkable career at KU,” Chancellor Douglas A. Girod said. “Beyond the excellence his programs displayed on the court, Coach Bechard was a terrific ambassador for our university and always represented us well on the national stage. We wish him the best in retirement and thank him for his contributions to KU.”

A staple for Bechard throughout his career was player development, which was evident by the accolades his student-athletes earned. Bechard coached 12 AVCA All-Americans, including First Team selections Kelsie Payne (2015 and 2016) and Ainise Havili (2015) and Second Team selection Caroline Jarmoc (2012), on top of Third Team selections Reagan Cooper (2023) and Camryn Turner (2024). He also saw several other Jayhawks earn All-America honorable mention from the AVCA including Josi Lima, Erin McNorton, Sara McClinton, Chelsea Albers, Cassie Wait, Madison Rigdon, Caroline Bien and Toyosi Onabanjo.

In his first season at KU in 1998, Bechard improved the Jayhawks’ win total by six matches from the previous season and then posted five-straight winning seasons, before leading the program to its first ever NCAA Tournament selection in 2003. That squad, led by Lima, went 22-11 on the year and advanced to the second round of the tournament. That marked the first of three-straight postseason appearances for Bechard and the Jayhawks.

Bechard and the Jayhawks started another postseason streak in 2012 when the team went 26-7 on the season, advanced to the second round and finished the year ranked No. 25 in the final AVCA Top 25 of the season for the first time in program history. The following season, Kansas went 25-8 and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time ever and finished second in the Big 12. Two seasons later, led by Payne and Havili, Kansas went 30-3, advanced to the Final Four and finished the season ranked No. 4 in the country.

The following season, Kansas went 15-1 in Big 12 play and won the program’s first-ever Big 12 Championship and finished the season ranked No. 12 in the country. Bechard finished his career on a four-year NCAA Tournament streak, including another Sweet 16 appearance in 2021.

“I’m thankful for the support of Chancellor Girod, Director of Athletics Travis Goff and sport administrator Nicole Corcoran,” Bechard said. “They will find the right person to elevate this nationally prominent program to even greater heights. This decision, though a difficult one, won’t change my devotion to this athletic department and volleyball program.&nbsp;

“I’m looking forward to the time it will allow for a more consistent presence in the lives of my wife, children and grandkids who all have supported me in my coaching career.

Legendary Kansas Volleyball Coach Ray Bechard Retires After 27 Seasons

PHOENIX (AP) — Dylan Edwards ran for 196 yards and scored his third touchdown on a 36-yard run in the fourth quarter, helping Kansas State rally past Rutgers 44-41 in the Rate Bowl on Thursday night.

The Scarlet Knights (7-6) led by 10 at halftime and went up 34-17 on Ja'shon Benjamin's 7-yard touchdown catch on the opening drive of the second half. But Edwards and the Wildcats (9-4) stormed back.

Edwards scored on 65-yard touchdown run and, after an interception thrown by Rutgers’ Athan Kaliakmanis, Garrett Oakley caught a 13-yard touchdown pass to pull Kansas State within five. The Wildcats failed 2-point conversions after both touchdowns.

Rutgers briefly regained momentum, going up 41-29 early in the fourth quarter on Antwan Raymond's 1-yard TD run on a fake tush push.

Kansas State answered with Avery Johnson's 9-yard touchdown pass to Jadon Jackson. Edwards followed with his 36-yard score, capping an impressive night in place of DJ Giddens, who opted out of the bowl game to prepare for the NFL draft.
