There is still work to do, but Southeast of Saline has set themselves up for a late-season surge with a 4-1 start through five weeks.

The Trojans have looked strong on both sides of the ball, outscoring their first four opponents by 84 combined points.

SES is holding their opponents to just 15.8 points per game while scoring an average of 32.6 on offense.

Council Grove has steadily built a winner over the last three years, posting a 20-7 record since the start of the 2024 season.

In that span, they’ve gone to the state semifinals, falling to Nemaha Central in a game to face SES in the state championship game, and made a trip to the round of 32.

The Braves are off to another hot start in 2026, as one of just seven remaining undefeated teams in Class 2A.

Luke Stewart leads the Council Grove attack, completing 73% of his passes for 1,130 yards, 16 touchdowns, and zero interceptions through five weeks.

A good deal of that has gone to senior wideout Mason Samuels, who leads the team with 470 yards and 7 receiving touchdowns.

Southeast of Saline has been as close to untouchable as a team can be when playing in Gypsum, Kansas. Winning 41 of their last 42 games at home, with the lone loss coming in a state semifinal to Andale in 2021.

The Trojans have also won 19 consecutive home openers, and carry a 29-game winning streak into Friday’s contest with Council Grove.

Tiernan Ptacek continues to improve his numbers through the first five weeks, completing 67-128 passes for 933 yards and ten touchdowns. Ptacek has also been a force on the ground, adding another 420 yards and seven more scores in the run game.

On a huge comeback win over Wichita Collegiate…

“We talked to the boys about the opportunity last week, and we knew people were going to pay attention to how we responded after a loss against a really good 3A team in Wichita Collegiate. It wasn’t the start we were looking for but our kids battled and getting that win was big for us.”

On the effect of winning two close, come-from-behind games…

“Coming back to beat Beloit and Collegiate definitely gives our guys some confidence, but we’re really pushing to find more consistency. We have to find a way to be a more consistent team and avoid the big ups and downs with things like turnovers.”

On the growth of the defensive unit as a whole…

“We’re starting to play a little faster and figure some things out on the defensive side. Those guys have kept us in games and that’s really allowed us to come back and get a few wins.”

“Council Grove is a senior-heavy team and they’ve got long, athletic kids. They’re a well-coached team and this will be a tall task but our kids are excited for the opportunity and we’re expecting a good game.”

On slowing Luke Stewart and the Brave passing attack…

“They’ll throw the ball around with their lengthy athletes; they’ve got an athletic quarterback and every time he drops back he’s a threat to run so we’ll have to be sound in what we do and fly around to the football defensively.”

Despite the loss last week, Southeast of Saline is off to another promising start, opening the campaign at 3-1.

The Trojans have looked solid on both sides of the ball, outscoring their first four opponents by 76 combined points.

SES is holding their opponents to just 16.3 points per game while scoring an average of 35.3 on offense.

Tiernan Ptacek continues to grow his numbers through four weeks, completing 57% of his passes for 773 yards and ten touchdowns. Ptacek has also been a force on the ground, adding another 361 yards and six more scores in the run game.

The Trojans have also won 19 consecutive home openers.

Despite a 1-3 start, the Spartans will provide a real test for Southeast of Saline in enemy territory tonight.

Prior to 2025, Collegiate was on a run of 33 straight seasons posting a .500 or better finish, including state titles in 2009, 2000 and 1994.

Led by first-year head coach Brian Hill, who took the reins from Troy Black, the Spartans continue to spread teams out and rely on their playmakers in one-on-one situations.

Collegiate has already been battle-tested, with their three losses coming to a pair of 3-1 4A opponents in Wellington and Rose Hill, and a 3A juggernaut in Andale, who sits undefeated at 4-0.

On a 28-14 loss to Marysville last week…

“Marysville has a good squad. They were fast and physical, which magnified a lot of the mistakes that we made.”

On seeking out tough matchups in the regular season…

“We absolutely want to play the tougher teams throughout the regular season. Anything we can do to prepare ourselves for postseason play will be a big benefit to us.”

On Wichita Collegiate and the challenges they present…

“Collegiate has athletes all over the field, and they’ve got a new coach this year. They have good team speed, and we’ll have to play faster than we did last Friday to keep up.”

On ignoring Collegiate’s record as it pertains to their schedule…

“We cannot look past this collegiate team, they’ve played some solid teams and been in close games with those teams. That record doesn’t mean anything to us and we’ll have our work cut out for us tonight.”

On the keys to getting back in the win column this week…

“We learned from film but we’ve also talked about the speed we play at and it needs to be faster. Our energy in practice has been really good this week, we just have to continue building on that and clean up our mistakes.”

Southeast of Saline is off to another hot start, opening the campaign 3-0 for a ninth consecutive year.

The Trojans have dominated their last two games, and now boast a combined score of 127-37 through week three.

SES is holding their opponents to just 12.3 points per game while scoring an average of 42.3 on offense.

That offensive unit has looked dominant through three weeks, putting up 419 yards of total offense on average.

Tiernan Ptacek continues to lead the SES offense well, completing 44 of his 73 passes for 607 yards and 8 touchdowns, adding 297 yards six more touchdowns on the ground.

Despite the hot start, the Trojans will seek to take better care of the football in district play, having turned the ball over nine times in just three games.

Fortunately, the defense has made up much of that ground, forcing three interceptions, recovering three fumbles, and getting back for three sacks.

STREAKS, STREAKS, AND MORE STREAKS

This dynastic run has produced a number of impressive streaks for the Trojans. Most impressively, SES still holds a 51-game winning streak in the regular season, the longest of any program at any level in the state of Kansas.

Southeast has also won its last 18 season openers, 19 home openers, and is 41-1 in its last 42 home games.

After a dismal 1-8 finish in 2025, the Bulldogs got off to a concerning start when they fell to Chapman 40-6 in this year’s season opener.

Fortunately, that appears to be more a by-product of a resurgent Irish program than a waning Marysville program, as the Bulldogs bounced back to beat Clay Center and Concordia in back-to-back weeks.

Led by a strong ground-and-pound offense, the Bulldogs will seek to impose their will through the run game this week, setting up a strength-on-strength matchup against an SES program that’s always been good at stopping the run.

“Going into Ellsworth week we had some unknowns with some pieces getting shuffled around. I was impressed with what their freshman quarterback did and we didn’t feel about the way we played despite the lead in the first half but I was impressed with the way our guys responded in the second hald.”

On Tiernan Ptacek, Tysen Keller and Christian Peterson stepping up to lead the backfield…

“Tiernan is doing a lot of good stuff and we’ve really enjoyed his leadership. He still has some things to clean up with the interceptions but we just have to work on getting everyone on the same page.”

“Christian and Tysen are both kids we need to have on the defensive side of the ball, but having those two back in the backfield has been great for us and Tysen had an exceptional game on Friday.”

On Marysville and their run-heavy style of offense…

“Marysville has had a few good wins over the last couple of weeks and they really do take it to you on offense. They play physical, they fire out low and aggressive and if you’re not disciplined and playing your 1-11 things can be difficult.”

On district play and keys to this week’s game…

“There’s always a little something added when you get to district play. We always want to go 1-0 and focus on us but you also want to set the standard for what district play brings. Our kids have to keep working, have to continue to do their 1-11, clean up some mistakes and keep working.”

Most impressively, SES still holds a 51-game winning streak in the regular season, the longest of any program at any level in the state of Kansas.Southeast has also won its last 18 season openers, 19 home openers, and is 41-1 in its last 42 home games.A LOOK AT THE BULLDOGSAfter a dismal 1-8 finish in 2025, the Bulldogs got off to a concerning start when they fell to Chapman 40-6 in this year’s season opener.Fortunately, that appears to be more a by-product of a resurgent Irish program than a waning Marysville program, as the Bulldogs bounced back to beat Clay Center and Concordia in back-to-back weeks.Led by a strong ground-and-pound offense, the Bulldogs will seek to impose their will through the run game this week, setting up a strength-on-strength matchup against an SES program that’s always been good at stopping the run.QUOTES FROM COACH PTACEKOn a dominant 48-9 win over Ellsworth…“Going into Ellsworth week we had some unknowns with some pieces getting shuffled around. I was impressed with what their freshman quarterback did and we didn’t feel about the way we played despite the lead in the first half but I was impressed with the way our guys responded in the second hald.”On Tiernan Ptacek, Tysen Keller and Christian Peterson stepping up to lead the backfield…“Tiernan is doing a lot of good stuff and we’ve really enjoyed his leadership. He still has some things to clean up with the interceptions but we just have to work on getting everyone on the same page.”“Christian and Tysen are both kids we need to have on the defensive side of the ball, but having those two back in the backfield has been great for us and Tysen had an exceptional game on Friday.”On Marysville and their run-heavy style of offense…“Marysville has had a few good wins over the last couple of weeks and they really do take it to you on offense. They play physical, they fire out low and aggressive and if you’re not disciplined and playing your 1-11 things can be difficult.”On district play and keys to this week’s game…“There’s always a little something added when you get to district play. We always want to go 1-0 and focus on us but you also want to set the standard for what district play brings. Our kids have to keep working, have to continue to do their 1-11, clean up some mistakes and keep working.”

The Minneapolis football program has seen real cultural improvement under second-year head coach Garrett Galanski, and will be eager to put those lessons to the test when the 2026 season gets underway.

After a disappointing 3-6 finish in 2025, the Lions hit the weight room hard, and have bulked up considerably ahead of the new campaign.

“We’ve taken massive strides with our football culture and that starts with our weight room in the summer,” Galanski said. “We need to get our guys building camaraderie with each other as they get stronger physically. In years past we’ve had maybe three or four guys where we want to be, but this year we’ve had most of our roster at or above 80% participation and they’ve really been picking things up quickly. It feels like we’re way ahead of where we were last year.”

While the improvements in size and speed have been promising, it’s the connection off the field that’s caught Galanski’s eye.

“Our team chemistry has been great this offseason and you can really tell these guys are playing for each other,” he said.

The Lions return a great deal of talent on both sides of the ball, with eight returning seniors leading the charge.

“I feel like our skill positions are a big strength,” Galanski said. “We have a few guys that are extremely fast and athletic and a few bruisers that can hit with the best of them. Defensively, we’re flying around and making a lot of good plays, we still need to see how it translates to Fridays, but we’re excited.”

One of the biggest changes for Minneapolis comes with the graduation of Owen Just, who led the Lions at quarterback since his sophomore year.

Ironically, another sophomore quarterback will step into the shoes vacated by Just, as Brecken Weatherman prepares to take the reins of the offense in 2026.

“Brecken has amazing athleticism,” he said. “Owen was a prototypical quarterback and he could drop back and make any pass or take off with his legs. As a sophomore, Brecken isn’t there just yet, but he has a great arm, he asks all the right questions and he understands the game well. He’s also sneaky athletic and he’s showed up in a big way in the weight room.”

Bryson Lonberger will keep Weatherman company in the backfield, with sophomore Reece Abell mixing in as well.

For targets, Weatherman will have plenty of experienced hands to find with Brayden Johnson, Josh White, Charlie Klien, and recently converted offensive lineman Kingston Derronet making up the receiving corps.

Bladen Johnson, Ryan Lott, and Logan Biggs will see time on both sides of the line, while battles rage on between Caleb Amold, Jasper Johns, Josh White, Reece Abell, and Kingston Derronet for time at linebacker.

In the secondary, Weatherman takes over the safety spot vacated by Just with Lonberger and Klien joining him on patrol.

With a mix of returning starters, old faces in new places, and true newcomers, it may take some time for this squad to truly mesh, but if the team can gel early, the Lions have a chance to post their first winning season since 2022.

“We still have a bunch of question marks,” Galanski said. “Not in a bad way, but things like how we’re going to handle adversity, how we’ll perform with a first-time starting quarterback, how our team rallies around our guys when things do go wrong. You never know how those things will play out until you actually get out there.”

Regardless of where the chips may fall, one fact stands out among the rest: this Lion team has come together in a way few in the last decade have, and that alone is cause for excitement in Minneapolis.

“Our ultimate goal could truly be anything,” he said. “When you talk to these guys and you see their dedication and focus it’s really incredible. Whatever they want to accomplish we’ll find a way to get there and there’s no one I’d rather go to war with, I love these kids.”

The Lions open their season on September 4th when they travel to Ellsworth to battle the Bearcats.

🏈 Tight-knit Lions look to take next step under Galanski

For the first time in 16 years, the Southeast of Saline football program is under new management, but it hardly feels like a new era in Gypsum.

Chance Ptacek has been on the SES sideline for every snap of the last 16 seasons, helping elevate the status of Trojan football from winner, to contender, to state champion.

The trusted right-hand man of legendary head coach Mitch Gebhardt wasn’t just the obvious choice; to those familiar with the ins and outs of the program, he was the only right choice, and with that decision made, the future of Southeast football is in excellent hands.

“There have been a lot of people before us who have helped build this culture, and there’s a standard and a tradition that’s been set here,” Ptacek said. “I’m excited for this year’s group to have a chance to show what they can do, but we still hang our hat on the process, and trust that the games on Friday will take care of themselves.”

All of this is not to say there won’t be big changes in Gypsum; on the contrary, the team that takes the field on September 4th will look drastically different from the one that posted a runner-up finish with a 12-1 record in 2025.

The Trojans graduated 16 seniors who achieved an overall record of 46-3, including 14 playoff wins and a 2A state title over their four-year careers.

This year’s squad returns a great deal of talent, but new stars will need to emerge if Southeast is to maintain the ridiculous pace they’ve set over the last eight seasons.

So much change in such a short period of time would faze most programs, but Southeast of Saline intends to continue marching to a steady drumbeat as a new season filled with opportunities draws near.

“We lost a lot this offseason, but I met with our seniors, and they want to attack this season with a “don’t flinch” mentality,” Ptacek said. “We still want to compete for a state championship, but any of our guys will tell you our focus is on the process and our priority is still on going 1-0 each week.”

The Trojans also have the advantage of deeply ingrained systems and lingo that have remained consistent over the last 16 years from varsity all the way down to junior high.

“We’re not changing a whole lot, and I think the kids and the coaches appreciate that,” Ptacek said. “There’s a new normal logistically, but the kids came in this summer, they knew what they wanted to do, and they’re ready to go.”

With so many new faces, it’s good to have returning pillars to build around, and the Trojans get several of those back, including starting quarterback and free safety Tiernan Ptacek, and two-way all-state lineman Tristan Swank.

Ptacek returns after saving the Southeast season in 2025, taking over for injured quarterback Gannon Jacobson in week six, and leading the Trojans to seven more wins and a state runner-up finish.

“Tiernan has great leadership qualities and he did a great job stepping in and playing at a high level beside that big senior class we had last year,” Ptacek said. “This year he’s taken on more of a leadership role and he’s bringing guys along to meet the expectations of our program.”

Beyond Ptacek, Swank, wideout Lyrik Lilley and a handful of rotational linemen, the offense will be completely retooled around a new batch of varsity hopefuls getting their first shot on Friday nights.

By TYLER HENRY Lead Sportswriter - Salina PostFor the first time in 16 years, the Southeast of Saline football program is under new management, but it hardly feels like a new era in Gypsum.

Chance Ptacek has been on the SES sideline for every snap of the last 16 seasons, helping elevate the status of Trojan football from winner, to contender, to state champion. The trusted right-hand man of legendary head coach Mitch Gebhardt wasn’t just the obvious choice; to those familiar with the ins and outs of the program, he was the only right choice, and with that decision made, the future of Southeast football is in excellent hands.“There have been a lot of people before us who have helped build this culture, and there’s a standard and a tradition that’s been set here,” Ptacek said. “I’m excited for this year’s group to have a chance to show what they can do, but we still hang our hat on the process, and trust that the games on Friday will take care of themselves.”All of this is not to say there won’t be big changes in Gypsum; on the contrary, the team that takes the field on September 4th will look drastically different from the one that posted a runner-up finish with a 12-1 record in 2025.The Trojans graduated 16 seniors who achieved an overall record of 46-3, including 14 playoff wins and a 2A state title over their four-year careers. This year’s squad returns a great deal of talent, but new stars will need to emerge if Southeast is to maintain the ridiculous pace they’ve set over the last eight seasons. So much change in such a short period of time would faze most programs, but Southeast of Saline intends to continue marching to a steady drumbeat as a new season filled with opportunities draws near.“We lost a lot this offseason, but I met with our seniors, and they want to attack this season with a “don’t flinch” mentality,” Ptacek said. “We still want to compete for a state championship, but any of our guys will tell you our focus is on the process and our priority is still on going 1-0 each week.”The Trojans also have the advantage of deeply ingrained systems and lingo that have remained consistent over the last 16 years from varsity all the way down to junior high.“We’re not changing a whole lot, and I think the kids and the coaches appreciate that,” Ptacek said. “There’s a new normal logistically, but the kids came in this summer, they knew what they wanted to do, and they’re ready to go.”With so many new faces, it’s good to have returning pillars to build around, and the Trojans get several of those back, including starting quarterback and free safety Tiernan Ptacek, and two-way all-state lineman Tristan Swank.Ptacek returns after saving the Southeast season in 2025, taking over for injured quarterback Gannon Jacobson in week six, and leading the Trojans to seven more wins and a state runner-up finish.“Tiernan has great leadership qualities and he did a great job stepping in and playing at a high level beside that big senior class we had last year,” Ptacek said. “This year he’s taken on more of a leadership role and he’s bringing guys along to meet the expectations of our program.”Beyond Ptacek, Swank, wideout Lyrik Lilley and a handful of rotational linemen, the offense will be completely retooled around a new batch of varsity hopefuls getting their first shot on Friday nights.Senior LaVone Hopkins and sophomore Christian Peterson will look to fill the big shoes left by current Tabor College running back Grady Gebhardt, while Casson Klover, Tysen Keller, Hendrix Lund, Karson Barragan and Caden Peterson fill out a deep pool of new wideouts.Elijah Kejr, Ryan Weller, Eli Olander and Kain Sawyers will all join Swank on the offensive line, with Kejr playing two ways with Swank and Christiann Peterson on the D-Line.The linebacker corps will see the biggest overhaul, with Caden Peterson, Tysen Keller, Jayden Kloster and Josh Watkins rounding out the front seven, while Ptacek reprises his role alongside Casson Klover, Burton Brooks and Leighton Nutsch in the secondary. The Trojans will once again stake their state-best 43-game regular-season winning streak against some of the toughest teams in 2 and 3A, facing the likes of Beloit, Wichita Collegiate and Council Grove.“We have a very strong slate of teams that we’ll see this year,” Ptacek said. “Our district is going to be really solid again but these kids are hungry, and they’re excited to get this season going.”Southeast opens the 2026 campaign at home in a Trojan War against Beloit.2026 SES Football Schedule - 9/4 - vs. Beloit - 9/11 - at Lyons - 9/18 - vs. Ellsworth - 9/25 - at Marysville - 10/2 - at Wichita Collegiate - 10/9 - vs. Council Grove - 10/16 - at Riley County - 10/23 - vs. Minneapolis
