SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal traffic crash have made an arrest.

Just after 10p.m. Tuesday, police were dispatched to a traffic collision involving an SUV and pedestrian at the intersection of 13th and Greenwich in Wichita, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

Preliminary findings from the investigation revealed that 71-year-old Bill Wineinger had been involved&nbsp; collision with a Ford Explorer at the intersection. 

All parties involved in the initial collision sustained non-life-threatening injuries. As Mr. Wineinger exited his vehicle to assess the damage, a black Toyota 4-Runner, traveling east on 13th Street entered the intersection and struck Wineinger's vehicle.&nbsp; The impact caused it to hit him. This secondary collision caused fatal injuries to Wineinger.

Police took the driver of the 4-Runner, identified as a 41-year-old woman from&nbsp; Wichita, into custody and and she was booked on requested charges of Involuntary Manslaughter. Police have not released her name as they continue to investigate.

This is the 28th traffic fatality for the year.

Driver jailed after SUV strikes, kills Kan. man at scene of earlier crash

The 23-year-old Ross has been a bit player for the defending Super Bowl champions this season. He has been active in their first seven games but has just three catches for 34 yards on the year.

The fact that he is playing at all is noteworthy. After a standout first two seasons at Clemson, Ross was found to have a congenital fusion condition in his neck and spinal area that required career-threatening surgery. Ross returned to play another season for the Tigers, then turned professional, where the Chiefs were one of the few teams willing to clear him medically to play.

🏈 Chiefs receiver charged with domestic battery and criminal damage

PRATT COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday morning on U.S. Highway 54, about five miles west of Pratt, Kansas.

According to a media release from the KBI, preliminary information indicates that a motor carrier inspector from the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) observed a silver 2016 Honda Odyssey on the side of U.S. Highway 54 in Kingman County and stopped to offer aid.&nbsp;

He ran the vehicle’s tag, and before the tag returned the van departed heading west. The tag then came back stolen out of Saline County, so KHP and deputies from the Kingman County Sheriff’s Office attempted to locate the vehicle.

They found the van stopped along the highway and positioned patrol vehicles in front of and behind it. The female driver then rammed a Kingman County patrol car and fled. A chase ensued and entered Pratt County, at which time the Pratt County Sheriff’s Office joined. During the pursuit the male and female occupants switched who was driving.

Law enforcement deployed stop sticks several times during the chase, attempting to slow the van. It came to a stop in the parking lot at the Casey’s convenience store at 1900 E. 1st&nbsp;in Pratt. The female passenger, later identified as Abyana Parker, 22, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, exited the vehicle and ran. A deputy with the Kingman County Sheriff’s Office deployed a taser during her arrest. Parker was arrested for aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer, flee and elude, operating a stolen vehicle, interference with law enforcement, and criminal damage to property.

Meanwhile, the male subject, later identified as 29-year-old Ulysses M. Parker II, of Colorado Springs, fled in the opposite direction. He forced the occupant of a white 2007 F-350 pickup that was pulling a trailer and water tank out of the vehicle and stole it. Parker fled west on U.S. Highway 54, crossing the center line multiple times, endangering motorists and forcing at least one driver off the road. Parker then made a loop in a field and began heading back east, toward Pratt. Stop sticks were deployed and the vehicle eventually came to a stop.&nbsp;During the incident a deputy from the Pratt County Sheriff’s Office fired multiple times into the truck, and Parker was struck in the arm.

He was transported to a Wichita hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Parker was later released and was arrested for aggravated assault. Additional charges are expected. Both subjects were booked into the Kingman County Jail.

The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this shooting. Once completed the findings will be presented to the Pratt County Attorney for review.

PRATT COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Mondayon U.S. Highway 54, west of Pratt, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

A deputy with the Pratt County Sheriff’s Office shot a suspect during a vehicle chase. The suspect has been transported to an area hospital. 

&nbsp;No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

On October 19, 2023, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigations Division conducted an investigation into child sex crimes, according to Sheriff Brian Hill.

Deputies arrested 39-year-old Craig H. Miller, 39, of Topeka and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of attempted electronic solicitation of a child, attempted indecent liberties with a child, attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Yes, the Wildcats might be a little short on the depth chart at linebacker, but I think most of our playing days are behind us. I have also volunteered to call plays in. Fortunately, our coaches are much too smart for that.

No, county Farm Bureaus, Farm Bureau Financial Services agents and Wildcat fans have the opportunity to work within their communities to gather food donations and participate in a friendly competition with other agents and county Farm Bureaus through the End Hunger Food Drive sponsored by Kansas Farm Bureau, Farm Bureau Financial Services and K-State athletics.

The food drive has already started and will run until Nov. 15, and everyone who participates will be a winner in my book. The counties and agents bringing in the most donations will receive tickets to the game along with other prizes.

All of the donations will go to local food pantries, helping our friends and neighbors in need. I am so proud of our organization for all the work we do to feed those who do not have enough. We all take great pride in growing our abundant, safe, healthy food supply and yet we also want to make sure that everyone has access to it, too.

We do need to get busy. You can view participating counties by going to www.kfb.org and search “End Hunger Food Drive” to find drop off locations or make a monetary donation. After Nov. 16 nonperishable food donations will be weighed to determine the winners. Each dollar will add a pound to the total.

So here is the game plan. Some of you go straight to the grocery store and pick up some extra boxes of macaroni and cheese or cans of green beans and some muffin mix, too. The rest of you go deep and open up your computer, go the webpage and donate.

I know not everyone is a Wildcat but even if you are a Jayhawk or a Shocker you should want to send the visitors home without a victory. It’s not just Cats versus Clones, it’s an opportunity to help our fellow Kansans. I expect an overwhelming victory.

For those of you from Iowa, please don’t take it too hard, we still like you, just not when you play against K-State. Well, that and we don’t like to lose. So here is to the competition, may the best team win! My prediction will be for a big score for our food pantries and that will be good for another Wildcat Victory.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a traffic stop.

Just before midnight October 17, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a black 2013 Chevrolet Malibu with excessive window tint on all windows near SE 25th Street and SE Burr Street, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the investigation, illegal narcotics, drug paraphernalia, firearms and ammunition were located.

The driver, Jaquiez R. Spann-Samuel, 23, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee on requested charges of criminal use of a weapon, distribution of certain hallucinogens, possession of a narcotic, distribution of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, no drug tax stamp, unlawful acquisition of proceeds from drug transactions, excessive window tint, driving while license suspended, no vehicle liability insurance and two warrants for his arrest out of Shawnee County.

Give a brief bio on yourself in 100 words or less: I was born in Salina, KS, and attended school at Sunset and Grace Stewart Elementary schools and later South Junior and South High, where I graduated in 1992. I joined the Navy and served sixteen years at sea on five ships deploying nine times as well as being stationed overseas for thirteen years.&nbsp; I worked in Law Enforcement, Naval Security Forces, and Weapons Systems ultimately serving in senior Departmental and Command Leadership roles.&nbsp; Shortly after retirement, I returned to Salina to attend Kansas State Polytechnic’s Professional Pilot and UAS Engineering and Technology programs.

As a school board member, what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize in order to improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of public school students in our community?

I believe we should prioritize combatting the growing absenteeism problem that has been trending in recent years by implementing some policy changes that support increased attendance.&nbsp; Secondly, I believe we need to create initiatives that will improve our academic scores and make USD 305 a top performer statewide, raising the standards, which will draw the highest quality teachers to the district.&nbsp; Next, I believe that it is imperative that we reduce the amount of distractions that have invaded our schools so that we can get back to focusing on the fundamentals that traditionally have been the foundation of education.&nbsp; We need to assess what justly serves the students and adheres to established guidelines and community values to achieve the desired outcomes we seek.

In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue?

I believe that the library curatorship is where the answer to this question lies.&nbsp; The public and school libraries need to be curated as such that they provide access to materials and resources that have academic value and adhere to moral and ethical standards.&nbsp; If the books or materials are of questionable nature or content, then they likely do not serve the students properly in the school or public environment, making it inappropriate and unethical curatorship.&nbsp; We should not provide minors access to these books and materials if they are inappropriate and unnecessary in the school or academic environment. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents, citizens, and educators?

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I agree that parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the school district’s success, and I think a good way to help bring everyone together is by ensuring regular Parent Teacher Conferences, Open Houses, and Forums to suit the various levels of involvement.&nbsp; We need to ensure that the conversations go both ways and that adequate feedback is provided to assist in healthy communication.&nbsp; One of the biggest gripes that I have heard in recent years is the lack of healthy productive conversation that leads to the disenfranchisement of parents.&nbsp; It’s imperative that School Boards and School Faculty get this right because everyone is paying for it, but the kids are the ones who lose the most.

2023 Election: Candidate for USD 305 School Board, Paul Gebhardt

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects wanted in Saline County after a police chase in northeast Kansas.

Just before 8:30p.m. October 17, Shawnee County deputy with the&nbsp;attempted to conducted a traffic stop on a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe&nbsp;with an expired license plate near SW 21st Street and SW Fairlawn Road, according to Sheriff Brian Hill.

The driver refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated. The driver and passenger exited the vehicle near SW 19th Street and SW Quivira Drive and were quickly taken into custody following a brief foot pursuit.

The driver, Brooke D. Currie-Schultz, 42, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of driving while license suspended, operating a vehicle without registration, interference with law enforcement, flee or attempt to elude law enforcement, failure to give signal when changing lanes or turning, improper driving on a laned roadway and a warrant for her arrest out of Saline County.

The passenger identified as Charity L. Currie-Schultz, 44, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County jail on a requested charge of possession of an opiate, interference with law enforcement and a warrant for her arrest out of Saline County.

Just after 9p.m., October 14, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office was notified of possible child abuse involving a 1-year-old and 3-year-old child that had been occurring at a residence in the 6900 block of SW Arborhaven Lane, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

An investigation followed and on October 16, Deputies arrested 23-year-old Jacob I. Reisinger and 32-year-old Veronica C. C. Nelson both of Topeka,

Reisinger was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include two counts of endangering a child, abuse of a child and aggravated battery as well as one count of criminal threat. 

Nelson was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections (SNDOC) on requested charges of two counts of endangering a child.

The victims are known to the suspects, according to Christian.

Kansas couple accused of abuse involving 2 small children

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Natalee Holloway was beaten to death on a beach in Aruba and her body pushed out to sea after refusing the advances of the chief suspect in the 2005 killing, who admitted to the murder before pleading guilty Wednesday to extorting money from the missing teen’s mother.

Although Joran van der Sloot isn’t charged in Holloway’s death, his confession may finally resolve a case that has captivated the public’s attention for nearly two decades, spawning extensive news coverage, books, movies and podcasts.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” Beth Holloway, Natalee's mother, told reporters outside the federal courthouse in Alabama. “Joran van der Sloot is no longer the suspect in my daughter’s murder. He is a killer.”

Natalee Holloway went missing during a high school graduation trip with classmates. She&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/timeline-peru-sloot-natalee-holloway-extradition-165b7745e8210488316da1be6d30d855">was last seen</a>&nbsp;on May 30, 2005, leaving a bar with van der Sloot, a Dutch citizen and student at an international school on the Caribbean island where he grew up. He was questioned in the disappearance but never prosecuted. A judge declared Holloway dead, but her body was never found.

Van der Sloot, now 36, pleaded guilty to the extortion and fraud charges in exchange for a 20-year sentence. That prison term will run concurrently with a 28-year sentence he's serving in Peru for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-crime-peru-alabama-birmingham-b61a4dfc829e429a942854d33b86cde5">killing Stephany Flores</a>&nbsp;in 2010.

U.S. Judge Anna Manasco said the details of his confession factored into her sentencing decision.

“You have brutally murdered — in separate instances years apart — two young women who refused your sexual advances,” she said.

Shackled and wearing an orange jail uniform, van der Sloot told the crowded courtroom he hoped the confession provides closure.

“I would like the chance to apologize to the Holloway family, my own family,” he said, later adding, “I am no longer the person I was back then.”

The judge said the plea deal required van der Sloot to provide all the information he knew about Natalie Holloway’s disappearance, allow her parents to hear in “real time” his discussion with law enforcement, and take a polygraph test.

After the hearing, Beth Holloway told reporters she was “absolutely confident” that they finally got the truth from van der Sloot after years of lies.

In an interview conducted by his attorney, he says he and Holloway were lying on the beach kissing. She started to resist, but he kept touching her, so she kneed him between the legs. He stood up and kicked her “extremely hard” in the face while she was still lying down.

At that point, he said, she was “unconscious, possibly even uh, even dead, but definitely unconscious.” He said he picked up a nearby cinderblock and brought it down on her face.

Frightened and unsure what to do, he said he dragged her body until he was knee-deep in the waves, then pushed her out to sea.

The Holloway family has long sought answers about the disappearance, and van der Sloot has given different accounts over the years, at one point saying Holloway was buried in gravel under the foundation of a house but later admitting that was untrue.

Five years after the killing, an FBI sting recorded the extortion attempt in which van der Sloot asked for $250,000 from Beth Holloway to reveal the location of her daughter’s remains. He agreed to accept $25,000 to disclose the location, and asked for the other $225,000 once the remains were recovered.

Van der Sloot chose “greed over Beth Holloway’s grief,” prosecutor Lloyd Peeples told the judge Wednesday.

Van der Sloot moved from Aruba to Peru before he could be arrested in the extortion case. The government of Peru agreed to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/natalee-holloway-van-der-sloot-arraignment-c69b0d1606980df065b954e94da9ac01">temporarily extradite</a>&nbsp;him to face trial on the extortion charge, and he will return to Peruvian custody after his case is concluded.

While giving her impact statement Wednesday, Beth Holloway turned to stare directly at her daughter's killer, sitting just a few feet away in court.

“You look like hell, Joran,” she said.

2023 Election: Candidate for USD 305 School Board, Dana Kossow

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 8:30a.m. Monday,&nbsp;the Barton County Sheriff’s Office executed search warrants at two separate locations in the City of Great Bend, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir. Sheriff’s deputies and detectives had been working for several weeks on a cocaine distribution investigation.

Warrants were served simultaneously in the 2200 block of Heizer Street and in the 1700 block of Washington Street. Sheriff’s officers located cocaine, currency, firearms and drug paraphernalia. The Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Great Bend Fire Department to force entry into a safe. The firemen were successful and further evidence was found.

At the Heiser Street location, deputies arrested 31-year-old Fausto Hernandez, Junior of Great Bend and booked him on requested charges of distribution of cocaine and criminal use of a firearm. He’s being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond. Fausto Hernandez also had an outstanding warrant for attempting to flee and elude, which carries an additional $1,000 bond.

Evidence found at the scene implicates other individuals and further arrests are expected.

Kansas deputies found cocaine, cash and guns

LOS ANGELES (AP) —Suzanne Somers, the effervescent blonde actor known for playing Chrissy Snow on the television show “Three’s Company” as well as her business endeavors, has died. She was 76.

Somers had breast cancer for over 23 years and died Sunday morning, her family said in a statement provided by her longtime publicist, R. Couri Hay. Her husband Alan Hamel, her son Bruce and other immediate family were with her in Palm Springs, California.

“Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th,” the statement read. “Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”

In July, Somers shared on Instagram that her breast cancer had returned.

“Like any cancer patient, when you get that dreaded, ‘It’s back’ you get a pit in your stomach. Then I put on my battle gear and go to war," she told Entertainment Tonight at the time. "This is familiar battleground for me and I’m very tough.”

She was first diagnosed in 2000, and also had skin cancer. She faced some backlash for her reliance on what she's described as a chemical-free and organic lifestyle to combat the cancers. She argued against the use of chemotherapy, in books and on platforms like “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which drew criticism from the American Cancer Society.

Somers was born in 1946 in San Bruno, California, to a gardener father and a medical secretary mother. She began acting in the late 1960s, playing the blonde driving the white Thunderbird in George Lucas’s 1973 film “American Graffiti.” Her only line was mouthing the words “I love you” to Richard Dreyfuss’s character.

At her audition, Lucas just asked her if she could drive. She later said that moment “changed her life forever.”

Somers would later stage a one-woman Broadway show entitled “The Blonde in the Thunderbird,” which drew largely scathing reviews.

She appeared in many television shows in the 1970s, including “The Rockford Files,” “Magnum Force” and “The Six Million Dollar Man,” but her most famous part came with “Three’s Company,” which aired on ABC from 1977 to 1984 — though her participation ended in 1981.

On “Three’s Company,” she was the ditzy blonde opposite John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt in the roommate comedy. In 1980, after four seasons, she asked for a raise from $30,000 an episode to $150,000 an episode, which would have been comparable to what Ritter was getting paid. Hamel, a former television producer, had encouraged the ask.

“The show’s response was, ‘Who do you think you are?’” Somers told People in 2020. “They said, ‘John Ritter is the star.’”

She was soon fired and her character was replaced by two different roommates for the remaining years the show aired. It also led to a rift with her co-stars; They didn’t speak for many years. Somers did reconcile with Ritter before his death, and then with DeWitt on her online talk show.

But Somers took the break as an opportunity to pursue new avenues, including a Las Vegas act, writing books, hosting a talk show and becoming an entrepreneur. In the 1990s, she also became the spokesperson for the “Thighmaster.”

Somers returned to network television in the 1990s, most famously on “Step by Step,” which aired on ABC’s youth-targeted TGIF lineup. The network also aired a biopic of her life, starring her, called “Keeping Secrets.”
