SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes. On Thursday, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigations Division conducted an investigation into child sex crimes, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. They arrested 28-year-old Joshua M. McMahan. McMahan was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a requested charge of electronic solicitation of a child.&nbsp; The sheriff's office released no additional details.

During the investigation of the Jan. 30th weekend robbery, detectives gathered valuable information. The Sheriff’s Office’s Fugitive Warrant Unit located and arrested Michael-Don A. Vincent Sr., 32. Vincent Sr. was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and theft. Another individual involved in this case is still outstanding. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of 24-year-old Stephanie Santana Munoz, 24, to contact police or email Shawnee County Sheriff's office&nbsp;Stephanie.Dicken@snco.us

Search underway for suspect in Kansas robbery investigation

With two months of the high school basketball season in the books, the Southeast of Saline and Chapman girls’ basketball teams will square off on Friday to kick off the final leg of their 2022-23 campaigns.

The Lady Trojans will enter this contest at 12-2, ranked as the #9 team in Class 3A, while the resurgent and home-standing Lady Irish come in at 8-6.

A season ago, these two met in a 68-26 home victory for Southeast, but the Lady Trojans know that this year’s Chapman team is much improved from the one they saw in early 2022.

“Chapman was pretty young last year but they’re all a year older and more experienced,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “They have some real size with two girls who are way bigger than we are. They play inside out a little bit and they really get after it so we have to play under control and not give up easy baskets in the lane.”

A similar respect has been afforded to Southeast from the Chapman side of the matchup, as the Lady Irish prepare for what should be a real battle on their home floor.

“They play hard, they’re very well coached and they shoot the ball well,” Chapman head coach Michael Wahlmeier said. “Last year they lit us up early and we didn’t respond very well so we’ve got to be ready to go from the tip, we have to be ready to defend and we have to be able to score ourselves. We don’t want to get into a track meet with them but you can’t expect to hold them to just a few points.”

Both teams have developed a reputation for wanting to push the pace this season, and each will have to lock in mentally to ensure that they don’t speed themselves up beyond the point of comfort.

“They want to get out and run and they have some really athletic kids,” Smith said. “We like to run too but we have to remember that we don’t have to shoot the ball after one or two passes and we have to make teams guard us for longer.”

One of the biggest keys for the Lady Irish will come in how they handle the Southeast press, something that has allowed the Lady Trojans to score easy buckets in bunches this season.

“Controlling the tempo is huge,” Wahlmeier said. “We like to run too but not like they do. We want to slow them down as much as possible but still be in the rhythm that we like to play in. Transition defense will be important, we need to make sure we’re sprinting back and it has to be the whole team.”

To lock down a second five-game winning streak this season, SES will once again have to contend with the renowned post play of Maya Kirkpatrick and Keira Jones, who have done an excellent job of keeping opponents off the glass this season.

“We’ve gotten better with every game at understanding how we need to defend to keep teams that have us outsized off balance,” Smith said. “Everyone has a different role but overall we’ve done a really nice job.”

On the other side of this matchup, Chapman will need to play at their peak to avoid their first three-game skid of the campaign and to eliminate a top-ten 3A opponent.

“We need to take care of the basketball and make sure we’re not giving them second chances,” Wahlmeier said. “Rebounding is also huge for us and we have to make sure we’re doing that to limit their scoring opportunities.”&nbsp;

Tip-off between the Lady Irish and Trojans is set for 6:00 at Chapman high school, with the boys’ game to follow at 7:30.

Chapman hosts #9 Lady Trojans in all-area showdown

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A Kansas teen accused in connection with a fatal shooting Sept. 15 made another court appearance Jan. 27.

Laquavion Bentley, 19 of Wichita, is now charged with criminal discharge of a firearm, 2 counts of aggravated assault, and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon,&nbsp; according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

He was originally booked on a requested charge of 2nd degree murder, according to Wichita Police.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Just after 1:30 a.m. Sept. 15, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 4500 block of South Hydraulic. Upon arrival, Officers located 21-year-old Devin Bills unconscious and not breathing with two gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to Officer Juan&nbsp;Rebolledo.

Officers began life-saving measures. EMS pronounced Bills deceased on the scene.

The investigation revealed that Bills and several other people were outside the residence hanging out when a verbal argument ensued, and shots were fired. Bentley fled the scene in a vehicle. 

Bentley is due back in court February 9, according to the district attorneys' offie.&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20075063"> He remains in jail</a> on a $250,000 bond.

SALINA- LaDeene Wickersham passed away peacefully on January 29, 2023, in Salina, Kansas, after suffering from congestive heart failure. LaDeene was born on February 29, 1940, in Attica, KS, to Willard D. McClaflin and Glorina M. (Roach) McClaflin.

LaDeene married John Thomas Wickersham on September 21, 1957, in Salina.

LaDeene graduated from Salina High School in 1957 and received an award from the National PTA for creating the first school fair in Salina. The proceeds were used to create a library at Huesner Grade School in Salina which inspired other schools to do the same. 

She was an active member at University United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years and bought and donated the church bell system that is still in use today.

LaDeene had a passion for reading that lead her to work at nearly every library in Salina, except Kansas Wesleyan. Her favorite library was the Salina Public Library, which her grandfather's cousin, Thomas Roach, helped build with money from Andrew Carnegie and citizen donations. She was also a proud member of the Saline County Genealogical Society where she held numerous club offices as well as authored several books.

LaDeene was highly dependable and instilled this trait into her sons, Patrick, and Bradford. In addition to being an avid reader, LaDeene also worked for several companies including Sears &amp; Roebuck, School Specialty Supply, and ran the direct marketing division at Market Aid Inc.

LaDeene was preceded in death by her sisters Ruth Oltmans of Mound Ridge, Carol Campbell of Wichita, and Deloris Meye, of Meyer Ranch, TX, and brothers Clyde McClaflin of Kingman, and Donald McClaflin of Topeka.

LaDeene is survived by her husband John Thomas Wickersham of Salina; sons Patrick and Bradford Wickersham, both of Wichita, and her granddaughter Hunter B. Elliott (Donald Jacob Elliott) of South Haven.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Cemetery north of New Cambria. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Pinnacle Park, care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina. The family extends their appreciation to Pinnacle Park staff for making their mother’s last days comfortable during her illness.

She will be remembered fondly for her numerous wonderful qualities such as, her dependability as well as her love for reading that had no bounds or limits. We will miss you dearly, LaDeene!

JOHNSON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating four teens in connection with vandalism at the Blue Valley High School football stadium and press box, according to a statement from the Johnson County District Attorney's office.

The District Attorney's office charged 16-year-old Jaden J. Butler; 16-year-old Nathan J. Murphy; 17-year-old Daniel Reiss Svilarich and 18-year-old Wade R. Schemenauer with burglary and criminal damage that occurred on January 15.&nbsp;The vandalism included included racial slurs and graphic images, according to Overland Park police.

&nbsp;Police booked Schemenauer into jail on a $2,500 bond.&nbsp; He is not longer in custody, according to online jail records.

In a statement sent to USD 229 families,&nbsp;Blue Valley High School Principal Charles Golden wrote,&nbsp;“It is important that you know one of the individuals charged is a Blue Valley School District student. Blue Valley’s administrators understand the seriousness of what has happened, and we will respond accordingly. We are also committed to civility and dignity for every child in our community, no matter the situation. My hope is the announcement will provide all of us with some level of comfort.”

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an intentionally set house fire that resulted in two people being seriously injured.

Just after 1a.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to 214 NE Chandler Street in reference to an unknown individual causing a disturbance outside of the home, according to spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

When officers arrived, they observed a large house fire at 206 NE Chandler Street and requested the response of Topeka Fire crews and American Medical Response.

Fire crews found a man and woman&nbsp;outside the house suffering from serious fire-related injuries, according to Nichols.

While fire crews were performing an offensive fire attack on the house, police located an adult male suspect in the area from the earlier disturbance. 

Police took the suspect identified as Arturo R. Ramirez, 41, Topeka&nbsp; was&nbsp; into custody and transported him to the Law Enforcement Center to be interviewed.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested Ramirez and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Attempted Murder in the 1st degree: Intentional and premeditated, Aggravated Arson: Substantial Risk To Great Bodily Endangerment; Reckless Expose to Danger, Bodily Harm, Violate protection order, Abuse order per KSA 60-3105, 60-3106, 60-3107, Probation County On Felony and Probation Violation County Misdemeanor.

The cause of the fire has been determined by fire investigators as incendiary; intentionally set in connection with a domestic incident, according to the Topeka Fire Department.

LINDSBORG - Five new exhibitions are open in the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery through March 12.

The exhibitions include paintings by Oklahoma artist J. Jay McVicker (1911-2004), a Jim Turner photographic retrospective, landscape paintings by Randall Bennett, an exhibition of early additions to the Gallery's permanent collection, and art by Smoky Valley High School students.

The Sandzén Gallery, located at 401 N. First Street in Lindsborg is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free, with donations appreciated. Docent tours for groups are available by two-week advance appointment. 

Midwest Modern showcases the work of J. Jay McVicker from a private collection in Oklahoma. Born at the dawn of the twentieth century, McVicker was first a regionalist in the 1930s, capturing scenes of rural life and landscapes in paintings and prints. Just before World War II, his works began to incorporate dashes of geometric cubism and biomorphic surrealism. At the war’s end, the artist returned home and pushed the boundaries of what art could look like and communicate. McVicker continued to practice in the center of America, gaining recognition from his position at Oklahoma State University as he regularly submitted works to juried exhibitions all over the country for awards and purchase prizes. McVicker was prolific and passionate about his art and this exhibition will showcase works from throughout his career.

Jim Turner has been a staple of the Lindsborg community for most of his life and likely photographed more people, events, and places – all from a multitude of angles – than anyone before him. Although often recognized for his commissions photographing weddings, high school seniors, and the like, Turner's focus goes well beyond that. He writes, "My expressions have grown out of where I live. The plains have an immense beauty that most non-plains living people seem rarely to appreciate. Maybe the reason is that our beauty doesn’t jump out at the viewer like a big mountain or a crashing waterfall. Plains beauty, beside our great storm clouds and wonderful skies during sunset and sunrise, is found in the microcosms of the natural world – grasses, trees, wind, and light."

A Prairie Art Dialogue features work by Randall Bennett of Lawrence. He is a professional artist and owner/director of Tall Grass Museum Services. After earning his architecture degree at Kansas State University, he worked in the architectural profession for a number of years before returning to art school. Afterward, he took a job working in the museum exhibit fabrication industry and has stayed with it continuously. Besides his museum-related jobs, Bennett stays busy with his personal artwork. He currently has six self-published books of his artwork and two of illustrated poetry. He regularly tries new and different styles and media in order to push his own boundaries and improve as an artist.

Early Additions to the Permanent Collection will showcase artworks that came into the gallery's collection from the late 1950s through the 1980s. Curator Cori Sherman North made selections that impacted the holdings and established a well-rounded and diverse collection. A number of works were purchased and donated by Birger Sandzén's daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Pelham Greenough, while others were gifts of the artists or other enthusiastic collectors.

Art by students from Smoky Valley High School in Lindsborg rounds out the exhibitions. They will be showing works selected by instructor Gretchen Elliott in a multitude of mediums from paintings and prints to sculpture and ceramics.

Five new exhibitions open at Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery

Marion D. Schumacher, age 83, of Munjor, Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2023, at HaysMed. He was born May 21, 1939, in Ellis County, Kansas, on the farm near Victoria to Alois “Shorty” and Mary (Jacobs) Schumacher. On April 12, 1958, he married Natalie Robben in Walker, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 14, 1994. Marion married Valerie Rosenberg on January 18, 2003, in Munjor. Marion had worked for the Ellis County Road and Bridge department for 33 years. Prior to that he had worked at the flour mill and P&amp;B Packers. He was an avid outdoorsman particularly enjoying hunting, fishing and farming. He enjoyed his family time as well. He was a member of NRA and St. Francis of Assis Catholic Church in Munjor. He is survived by his wife, Valerie of Munjor; two sons, Timothy L. Schumacher and wife Tammy of Victoria and Corey Schumacher and wife Heather of Ellis; a daughter, Wanda Ball and husband Jack of Ellis; a brother, Ron Schumacher and wife Pat of Highlands Ranch, CO; 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Marion was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Natalie; two sisters, Charlotte Veatch and Mary Lou Pfannenstiel as well as two infant brothers, Gerald and Dewayne. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, February 3, 2023, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Cosmosphere announced a new Spring Break camp March 13-17, which gives 7th-12th&nbsp;graders the opportunity to train with an astronaut. Called “Spring into STEM,” the day camp provides training similar to what astronauts use to prepare for the extreme environments of space, including SCUBA instruction with astronaut Nicole Stott.

Stott previously came to the Cosmosphere in 2022 for educational activities and to sign her book, “Back to Earth: What Life in Space Taught Me About Our Home Planet―And Our Mission to Protect It.” Stott completed two NASA space flights and is also an experienced aquanaut and a noted artist.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Cosmosphere announced a new Spring Break camp March 13-17, which gives 7th-12th&nbsp;graders the opportunity to train with an astronaut. Called “Spring into STEM,” the day camp provides training similar to what astronauts use to prepare for the extreme environments of space, including SCUBA instruction with astronaut Nicole Stott.Stott previously came to the Cosmosphere in 2022 for educational activities and to sign her book, “Back to Earth: What Life in Space Taught Me About Our Home Planet―And Our Mission to Protect It.” Stott completed two NASA space flights and is also an experienced aquanaut and a noted artist.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal chase and crash and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 5:30 a.m. Saturday, deputies attempted to stop a Hyundia Elantra for alleged traffic infractions on Kellogg Drive, according to Sheriff's Lt. Nathan Gibbs. The driver of the vehicle <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20054606">Harry Rediker 22,</a> Wichita,&nbsp; failed to stop and fled from deputies.

The Preliminary Investigation shows Rediker’s vehicle left the roadway at Hoover and Taft and struck a utility pole ending the pursuit.

EMS transported Rediker was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. EMS also transported the passenger in the vehicle identified as 38-year-old Lindsey Garmon of Wellington to a local hospital with serious injuries. Gamon later died at the hospital, according to Gibbs.

He has previous convictions for theft, criminal possession of a weapon and flee or attempt to elude law enforcement had had been reported as absconder on Jan. 9, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. The agency issued a warrant for his arrest on Jan. 28.

Wanted Kansas felon jailed after chase, fatal crash

 </figure>Around 4:40a.m., the driver, Cassy J. Thomas, 22, was taken into custody. &nbsp;Thomas and Taylor were both booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Thomas is being held on requested charges including felony interference with law enforcement. Taylor had three warrants for his arrest and is being held on requested charges of&nbsp; felony flee or attempt to elude, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, possession of stolen property, felony interference with law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia
