Early Friday morning, the Salina Police Department received a Flock Safety Camera license plate reader notification on a stolen vehicle from the Wichita area.

According to SPD Capt. James Feldman, at around 6:10 a.m., a stolen Chevrolet passenger car drove into Salina and alerted the Flock camera system.

Officers then located the vehicle around the Walmart area, but the car took off and fled south on Interstate 135. 

"Officers pursued, and the pursuit was then taken over by Kansas Highway Patrol," Feldman said. "The pursuit went into McPherson County. Speeds did reach over 100 mph. The vehicle exited off I-135 and went westbound toward Marquette."

At some point in the pursuit, Feldman said either local law enforcement or KHP troopers used a tire deflation device, but the suspect continued driving on flat tires.

KHP troopers brought the pursuit to an end near Marquette and took two people into custody. The driver was 42-year-old Michael Trautloff from Haven, Kan., and the other was an unnamed female passenger with an active warrant from Sedgwick County.

Feldman said KHP troopers transported the female passenger to Wichita, and SPD officers booked Trautloff into the Saline County Jail with requested charges for one count of felony flee and elude and one count of obstruction.

Flock cameras catch stolen car from Wichita in town, KHP pursuit leads to Marquette

On Feb. 24, 1942, the SS Struma, a charter ship attempting to carry nearly 800 Jewish refugees from Romania to British-mandated Palestine, was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine in the Black Sea; all but one of the refugees perished.

ST. LOUIS – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), along with the Independence Police Department, secured three arrest warrants for murder based on an investigation into the October 2023 shooting death of Jason York in Independence, Kansas, according to a media release from the KBI.

Between 6:30 and 9 a.m. Thursday, the U.S. Marshals Service and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office arrested the three men in North St. Louis, Missouri.

Kevin A. Quinn, 37;&nbsp; Aquan A. Quinn, 20, and&nbsp; Kevin W. Martin, 23, all of St. Louis, were arrested on requested charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.

The suspects were booked into the St. Louis County Jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Montgomery County Attorney’s Office is expected to prosecute the case.

U.S. Marshals capture 3 for Kansas robbery, murder

Royanne (Young) Larson March 16, 1938 ~ February 21, 2024

Royanne Larson&nbsp;was born on March 16, 1938, and passed away on February 21, 2024. She was born in Salina, the daughter of Wayne and Ailene Young. She was the oldest of 14 children.

Royanne and Harold (deceased) were married for 64 years. Together they have six children: Shelly, Julie, Cindy, Mike (deceased), Joe (deceased) and Dawn. She has 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family; she loved following her kids and grandkids around wherever they lived and traveled.

She worked as a bank teller, a clerk at the Salina Auto Auction, and was The Best Mom Ever. She taught Julie how to be an accountant. Royanne spent many years being an office manager for her sons, Joe and Mike, and her grandson Evan. She was always eager to assist her family with any and all paperwork; she kept everything together behind the scenes. She thought that she was the most boring person in the room, but yet everyone wanted to be around her.

Royanne was an avid reader of suspense and mystery novels. She always read the last few pages of every book before she even started the book.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 25, 5-7pm at Ryan Mortuary. Services will be Monday, February 26, at 10:00 am, at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church.

Royanne (Young) Larson

Ronald Eugene Clarke July 25, 1939 ~ February 2, 2024

Ronald Eugene Clarke was a dedicated educator and coach who touched the lives of many students and athletes. He was born on July 25th, 1939, in Buhler, Kansas, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1957. He pursued his passion for teaching at Hutchinson Community College and Bethany College, earning his degree in 1962. He was married in 1960 and has two sons, Timothy and Patrick.

His teaching career began at Riverside School, where he wore many hats: he was the principal, the teacher for all subjects in grades 6 to 8, and the coach for softball, basketball, and track. When Riverside closed, he moved to&nbsp;Smolan&nbsp;Schools as the principal and coach for basketball and track.

He then landed a job at Soderstrom Elementary School in Lindsborg, where he taught English, Reading, and History. He also took charge of the football team, the seventh-grade boys basketball team, and the track team.

After three years at Soderstrom, he made a bold move: he gave up football to start the girls’ volleyball program, which became his lifelong passion. He also coached the eighth-grade boys’ basketball and track for decades.

Towards the end of his teaching career, he focused on coaching girls’ volleyball, with a brief stint helping Russ Weibert with boys’ basketball.

After retirement, he enjoyed running the scoreboard for basketball and volleyball games, jumping on a train to visit his grandkids in California, carving Christmas ornaments for his loved ones, devouring Mystery and Western books, and visiting his friends and family.

Cremation has been chosen and memorial services will be&nbsp;held 2:00 p.m., Friday March 1st&nbsp;at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities investigating the homicide of a 1-year-old identified as Taidyn Anderson of Wichita have made three arrests.

Just after 7p.m.On February 19, police responded to a shooting in the 2500 block of South Oliver, according to Police Lt. Aaron Moses. Through the investigation, officers learned that two adult females were struck by gunfire and 1-year-old Taidyn Anderson was also struck by gunfire and died of his injuries.

Investigators with the WPD homicide section have been diligently working this case since the shooting occurred. That work has included follow-up on leads, utilizing technology and executing search warrants. Through the investigation, three suspects were identified.

On Thursday, the Wichita Police Department arrested three suspects inclucding a 17-year-old boy and according to <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=232072">Sedgwick County booking records</a> 25-year-old Kveion <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=232072">Darnell Richard</a> and 21-year-old Jonathan <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=746317">Tillery-Matthias </a>all of Wichita on a requested charge of Felony Murder for their involvement in this case.&nbsp;

The<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=746317"> Tillery-Matthias</a> is currently on pre-trial supervision for Criminal Discharge of a Firearm into an Occupied Vehicle stemming from a Wichita Police investigation.<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=232072"> Richard </a>was on Parole for Criminal Discharge of a Firearm, Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Assault x2, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon.

Police believe that this was a targeted event which led to the death of a small child.

Just before 2a.m. Thursday, police responded to a shooting in the 8100 block of E Harry in Wichita, according to Police Lt. Aaron Moses.

First responders located 26-year old Audreanna Hidalgo of Wichita with a gunshot wound.&nbsp; She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officers with the Patrol East Community Response Team and Homicide Investigators immediately began investigating this case to understand what occurred. Throughout that investigation, police have come to believe that this was a case of Intimate Partner Violence.

This is the eighth criminal homicide in Wichita in 2024.

Kansas man jailed for alleged drive-by killing of his girlfriend

NEW YORK (AP) — A never-published biography of the Eagles delved deeply into the superstar classic rock band's 1980 breakup, their longtime manager testified Wednesday, saying co-founders Glenn Frey and Don Henley were “very disappointed” with the manuscript.

The book never found a publisher. But four decades later, it’s part of another story: a criminal trial that opened Wednesday and involves roughly 100 pages of hand-drafted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hotel-california-lyrics-manuscript-trial-eagles-henley-973e74e795416821e6f022895b47b78e">lyrics to “Hotel California”</a>&nbsp;and other Eagles hits.

The defendants — rare-books dealer Glenn Horowitz, former Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi and memorabilia seller Edward Kosinski — got the documents via Ed Sanders, a noted poet and nonfiction writer who also co-founded the avant-garde rock group the Fugs.

Sanders isn't charged with anything, but a key question is whether he had the right to sell the lyrics pages he obtained while researching the biography.

Manhattan prosecutors say Horowitz, Inciardi and Kosinski peddled the pages while knowing their ownership history was shaky at best. Then, prosecutors say, they schemed to thwart Henley’s efforts to reclaim what he says are stolen pieces of his legacy.

“All these lyrics are very personal to him, they’re a part of musical history, and it was simply unacceptable to him that they be stolen by anyone else,” Irving Azoff, the Eagles' manager, said during testimony. He said he had never known Henley to part with any of the legal pads on which he, alongside Frey, worked out some of the best-known lyrics in the rock songbook.

Defense lawyers say Henley voluntarily gave away the documents and leveraged prosecutors to try to take them back.

“They have accused three innocent men of a crime that never occurred,” Inciardi’s lawyer, Stacey Richman, told Judge Curtis Farber during opening statements. Farber will decide the verdict, as the defendants chose to forgo a jury.

The documents include lyrics-in-development for tracks from 1976's “Hotel California,” the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/3c0b39a1bb5b4e44aafe2c4e05a4b67f">third-biggest selling album ever</a>&nbsp;in the U.S.

Frey and Henley crafted them in a Beverly Hills house rented for the purpose, since the tidy Henley's tendency to pick up after Frey “would drive them crazy” if they worked in their own homes, Azoff testified.

Henley did most of the writing, he added, with Frey leaning in to make suggestions such as the phrase “Life in the Fast Lane," which became the title of a hit single.

The disputed pages include lyrics to that song, to “New Kid in Town” and, of course, to “Hotel California,” the more than six-minute-long, somewhat mysterious musical tale of a hedonistic but ultimately dark place where “you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”

If scorned by some as an overexposed artifact of the '70s, the Grammy-winning song is still a touchstone on classic rock radio and many personal playlists. The entertainment data company Luminate counted more than 220 million streams and 136,000 radio plays of “Hotel California” in the U.S. last year.

The case was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-music-new-york-california-290e31743f028951408a4a80a681f880">brought in 2022</a>, a decade after some of the pages began popping up for auction and Henley took umbrage. He bought four pages for $8,500 but also reported the documents stolen, prosecutors said.

At the time, the lyrics sheets were in the hands of Kosinski and Inciardi, who had bought them from Horowitz for $65,000. His company had purchased them for $50,000 in 2005 from Sanders.

A friend of Frey's, he was hired in 1979 to write a band biography for $25,000 and enjoyed extensive access. But Azoff testified that the co-founders disliked the resulting manuscript and that, “for me personally, all the stuff about the Eagles' breakup was unacceptable.”

As the project stalled, a frustrated Sanders asked Azoff in a 1982 letter for “a substantial amount of money,” saying he'd “behaved with great reserve” by not approaching a major magazine with a story about the Eagles' split.

“He had inside knowledge,” Azoff said, and with Frey and Henley cultivating solo careers, “we didn’t want some ugly story of the breakup of the Eagles to be published.”

They ultimately paid Sanders about $75,000 and agreed to let him look for a publisher, comfortable that any book still would need the band's approval under his 1979 contract, Azoff said.

Sanders hasn't responded to a phone message seeking comment about the case. Emails sent to him bounced back.

Sanders told Horowitz in 2005 that Henley's assistant had mailed along any documents he wanted for the biography, though the writer worried that Henley "might conceivably be upset” if they were sold, according to an email shown in court.

“It cast significant doubt on whether Sanders actually owned Henley’s lyric notes or had the right to sell them,” Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Penfold said in opening remarks.

Sanders' contract said the Eagles owned any material they furnished to Sanders for the book. Defense lawyers said their clients knew nothing about the contract until after they were indicted.

Prosecutors say once Henley's lawyers asserted the documents were stolen, Inciardi and Horowitz gave evolving accounts of how Sanders obtained them.

According to emails recounted in the indictment, those explanations ranged over the next five years from Sanders finding them abandoned in a backstage dressing room to getting them from Frey, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-music-8169f05ac21d43dda4b1c1dd8b065e28">died in 2016</a>.

There was some input and assent from Sanders, but he also also rejected some, including the backstage-salvage story, according to the emails.

Horowitz’ lawyer, Jonathan Bach, said the messages weren’t suspicious efforts to cover tracks, but rather an effort by Horowitz and Inciardi to get “a simple statement from Ed Sanders to rebut an allegation they know to be baseless.”

Kosinski forwarded one of the various explanations to Henley’s lawyer, then told an auction house that the rocker had “no claim” to the documents, the indictment says. He also asked the auctioneers not to tell potential bidders about the ownership dispute.

His lawyer, Matthew Laroche, said Kosinski was upfront with all and “acted diligently and appropriately.”

Henley is expected to testify. Defense lawyers have indicated that they plan to question how clearly he remembers his dealings with Sanders and the lyric sheets at a time when the rock star was living life in the fast lane himself.

Prosecutors say the defendants — rare-books dealer Glenn Horowitz, former Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi, and memorabilia seller Edward Kosinski — peddled the pages while knowing their ownership history was shaky at best. “The defendants were not businessmen acting in good faith, but criminal actors,” Manhattan District Attorney Nicholas Penfold said in an opening statement.

The defendants are all well-established professionals in the collectibles world, and they got the documents from a writer and 1960s counterculture figure with rock roots of his own.Prosecutors say the defendants — rare-books dealer Glenn Horowitz, former Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi, and memorabilia seller Edward Kosinski — peddled the pages while knowing their ownership history was shaky at best. Then, prosecutors claim, the men schemed to thwart Henley’s efforts to reclaim what he says are stolen pieces of his legacy.“The defendants were not businessmen acting in good faith, but criminal actors,” Manhattan District Attorney Nicholas Penfold said in an opening statement.The men have pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy to possess stolen property. Trial continues on ownership of handwritten lyrics to 'Hotel California'

SEDGWICK COUNTY — The man captured after his abduction of a 6-year-old Kansas girl is going to prison.

Last week, Judge Eric Williams sentenced 35-year-old Benjamin Brady to 4-years and 8-months in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In Nov. 22022, police responded to the 2300 block of N. Amidon in Wichita for an auto theft, kidnapping in a liquor store parking lot, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

A 35-year-old man reported that while he had gone into the store, an unknown man, later identified as Brady, stole his&nbsp;gold/tan Lexus Rx330 with his 6-year-old daughter still inside.

Officers immediately began checking the area for the vehicle and the juvenile and&nbsp; utilized Flock cameras and other License Plate Reader (LPR) technology and learned that the vehicle had entered the Kansas Turnpike headed South.

Neighboring counties, the Kansas Highway Patrol, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and the Tulsa Police Department were notified of the circumstances and the vehicle's last known location.

Troopers with Oklahoma Highway Patrol were able to stop the car approximately 22 miles south of the Kansas/Oklahoma state line and recover the girl.&nbsp;&nbsp;Brady, was taken into custody by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and booked into the Kay County, Oklahoma jail.

Brady pleaded guilty to attempted kidnapping and felony theft.&nbsp;

The Trojans and Lady Trojans made short work of Republic County to close out their season on a high note and secure some hardware in the process.

Girls Game: SE of Saline 52, Republic County 27

For a fourth consecutive season, the Lady Trojans have secured at least a share of the NCAA title, evening their league record with Beloit at 8-2.

With this win, Southeast closes out its regular season on a five-game winning streak at 15-5 while the book closes on Republic County’s campaign at 0-20.

“We got out and pressed them which isn’t something that we typically do but it’s something we wanted to work on,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “I thought we did a good job of adjusting to the way they attacked it.”

Republic County got off to a solid start but Southeast went on a big early run and never looked back, completely blanking the Buffaloes in the third quarter.

Lexi Jacobson led the Lady Trojans, tying her season high with 19 points in the win, aided by seven other teammates who chipped in at least a bucket.

Despite their pristine record, Southeast will be the 5-seed in this year’s sub-state bracket, and will open postseason play at Osage City next Tuesday.

Boys Game: SE of Saline 77, Republic County 25

On the boy’s side the Trojans routed Republic County in their widest margin of victory by far, leading by 38 at the half of an eventual 52-point win.

With this result, Southeast closes out their regular season at 11-9 overall while the Buffaloes wrap up their year at 1-19.

SES won the turnover battle in style, forcing Republic County to cough up the ball 20 times while surrendering it just three times themselves.

The Trojans were led in scoring by a trio of double-digit contributors in Owen Bailey (14), Gannon Jacobson (12), and Connor Caselman (12), who were among the ten different players to score for Southeast on the night.

On the other side, Republic County got 12 of their 25 points from Levi White, but were held to just a single bucket in both the second and third quarters as the Trojans ran away with the game.

Southeast will open sub-state play next Monday with a home game against either 8-12 Council Grove or 7-13 Halstead.

The documents include lyrics-in-development for “Life in the Fast Lane,” “New Kid in Town” and, of course, “Hotel California,” the more than six-minute-long, somewhat mysterious musical tale of the goings-on at an inviting, decadent but ultimately dark place where “you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”

If scorned by some as an overexposed artifact of the '70s, the Grammy-winning song is still a touchstone on classic rock radio and many personal playlists. The entertainment data company Luminate counted over 220 million streams and 136,000 radio plays of “Hotel California” in the U.S. last year.

He had purchased them in 2005 from Ed Sanders, a writer and 1960s counterculture figure who worked with the Eagles on a band biography that was shelved in the early '80s.Sanders, who also co-founded the avant-garde rock group the Fugs, isn't charged in the case and hasn't responded to a message seeking comment about it.Sanders told Horowitz in 2005 that Henley's assistant had mailed along any documents he wanted for the biography, though the writer worried that Henley “might conceivably be upset” if they were sold, according to emails recounted in the indictment.But once Henley's lawyers began asking questions, Horowitz, Inciardi and Kosinski started maneuvering to gin up and disseminate a legally viable ownership history for the manuscripts, Manhattan prosecutors say.According to the indictment, Inciardi and Horowitz floated evolving accounts of how Sanders obtained the documents. Collectibles, known for auctioning celebrities’ personal possessions — so personal that Madonna&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/e97e69c287624787b094ed2a161489a1">unsuccessfully sued</a>&nbsp;to try to stop a sale that included her latex briefs.Henley told a grand jury he never gave the biographer the lyrics, according to court filings from Kosinski's lawyers. But defense lawyers have signaled that they plan to probe Henley’s memory of the time.“We believe that Mr. Henley voluntarily provided the lyrics to Mr. Sanders,” attorney Scott Edelman said in court last week.Sanders told Horowitz in 2005 that while working on the Eagles book, he was sent whatever papers he wanted from Henley’s home in Malibu, California, according to the indictment.Then Kosinski’s business offered some pages at auction in 2012. In others, he got them from a stage assistant or while amassing “a lot of material related to the Eagles from different people." In yet another, he obtained them from Frey — an account that “would make this go away once and for all," Horowitz suggested in 2017. Frey had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-music-8169f05ac21d43dda4b1c1dd8b065e28">died the year before</a>.“He merely needs gentle handling and reassurance that he's not going to the can,” Horowitz emailed Inciardi during a 2012 exchange about getting Sanders' “‘explanation’ shaped into a communication” to auctioneers, the indictment says.Sanders supplied or signed off on some of the varying explanations, according to the indictment, and it’s unclear what he may have conveyed verbally. But he apparently rejected at least the dressing-room tale.Kosinki forwarded one explanation, approved by Sanders, to Henley's lawyer. Kosinski also assured Sotheby's auction house that the musician had “no claim” to the documents and asked to keep potential bidders in the dark about Henley's complaints, the indictment says.Sotheby's listed the “Hotel California” song lyrics in a 2016 auction but withdrew them after learning the ownership was in question. Sotheby's isn't charged in the case and declined to comment.Henley bought some draft lyrics privately from Gotta Have It! for $8,500 in 2012, when he also began filing police reports, according to court filings.Defense lawyers claim Henley found starstruck prosecutors to take up his cause instead of pursuing a civil suit himself.The DA's office worked closely with Henley's legal team, and an investigator even yearned for backstage passes for an Eagles show — until a prosecutor said the idea was “completely inappropriate,” Kosinki's lawyers said in court papers.Prosecutors have rebuffed questions about their motivations as “a conspiracy theory rather than a legal defense.”
