Q: How is Clyde Edwards-Helaire and how did the conversation go to put him on NFI?

REID:&nbsp;“Clyde (Edwards-Helaire) talked to y’all, so you understand. I’m going to keep what we talked about private. We’re looking out for, obviously, what’s best for him and that’s – right now, that is the most important thing.”

Q: What are you expecting from other teams and is it fun to be the first regular season game in the NFL?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, we’ll see what goes (on). I’m not sure what to anticipate or expect, but we’ll see how it all works out. You’ve got two good special teams going against each other, plus (Ravens Head Coach) John’s (Harbaugh) got a ton of experience there, so we’ll just see how it goes.”

Q: I’m in town covering this game, where do I get some good food?

REID:&nbsp;“Listen if I say one (food spot to eat at), the others will kick me out. You can’t pick a bad spot, but after this, I’ll give you one.”

Q: I didn’t know you were a politician.

REID:&nbsp;“When it comes to food, I am (laughter).”

Q: You’ve had a legendary career and legendary run here in KC. How many more years do you have left?

REID:&nbsp;“I signed a five-year deal, so we’ll see how all of that goes. I’m getting older though, Brandon (Marshall), and you know that.”

Q:&nbsp;Is there any different feeling going into this season opener compared to your first one?

KELCE:&nbsp;“Completely different. You’re just more comfortable, more aware of kind of the system, the routines, so you feel like you’ve got that much more of a heads up. You’re kind of like more advanced in terms of understanding scheme and things like that and just how you’re supposed to attack your opponent.”

Q:&nbsp;How do you focus on football with all the other things going on in your life?

KELCE:&nbsp;“I just love coming in here, man. It’s kind of – I mentioned (that) St. Joe was my sanctuary. I just love football and how it takes me away from life, and it gives me something I can feel genuinely happy about. I enjoy coming in the building, working on my craft, getting to understand a new gameplan and perfecting that for the people around me. It gives me a purpose to kind of go about my day and to live my life. I have so much excitement doing it. It’s going to be hard trying to figure out when to call it quits or not.”

The decision to eliminate someone’s job after years of solid performance is not one that many employers make without serious consideration.

In the case of a beef cattle operation, the decision to sell the cow from the herd is often influenced by a variety of factors, including her performance, the quality of her offspring, cattle prices and marketing opportunities among others, say the experts at Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksre-learn.com/calf-performance-cow-cullling">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, the experts addressed a question from a listener who asked about how a calf’s performance should be factored into the decision to sell its mother.

“The decision to cull a cow from the herd is a complex decision and it usually isn’t just one thing that drives that decision,” K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers said.

Specific to a calf’s performance, if the cow is in good body condition but the calf is not at the appropriate weight for its age, K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster said it is likely that the cow is not supplying enough milk to meet that calf’s dietary needs.

“If the calf looks rough and the cow is in good shape, it tells me that calf is relying too much on the grass to meet its nutritional needs, and in a drought environment that can be challenging,” Lancaster said.

K-State veterinarian Bob Larson agreed and advised producers to evaluate the cow’s udder.

“If the calves are smaller than expected, make sure to confirm the cow has a functional udder,” Larson said

The experts agreed that studying the individual records can help make the decision to sell a cow that, historically, has raised small calves.

“By looking at the year-over-year records, a producer can see what the trend has been,” K-State agricultural economist Dustin Pendell said.

Those records can also tell producers the breeding date, pregnancy status and date of calving, and Larson said those are important to know when evaluating the performance of the cow-calf pair.

“If the calf’s performance is lower than average, I’d look at when the cow calved relative to the others in the herd and her pregnancy status,” Larson said. “If she has a calf each year that is within a reasonable weight per day of age, then I’d keep her in the herd rather than replacing her with a cow whose performance is unknown.”

Larson added that the weaning weights of the calves will vary depending on the dam’s age.

Another factor that can influence the size of the calf is the cow’s diet during pregnancy, according to Lancaster.

“If those smaller calves are born to cows that aren’t getting enough nutrition in the mid-to-late gestation, it can have a stunting effect on those calves,” he said.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Marlene Kay Arthur, on August 27, 2024, at the age of 76 in Lincoln, Kansas. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who touched the lives of many with her kindness and love.

Born on November 22, 1947, at home in Vesper, Kansas, Marlene was the daughter of Leo and Lillian Flaherty. She grew up in Lincoln County, Kansas and later moved to Arizona and then back to Kansas where she continued to build a life full of love and joy with her children. Marlene was known for her generosity, warmth, and strong work ethic and was always there with a listening ear and a comforting hug.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Roy, Don, Butch Flaherty, and Charlene DeWitt.

She is survived by her children Wayne, Nathan (Nate) and his wife, Yee Ming, and Lillian (Lily) Arthur; granddaughter, Evana (Eva) Arthur; siblings, LaVern (Sharon), David (Aleta), Herb, Harold, and Denny Joe Flaherty; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marlene was a proud mother to Wayne, Nate and Lily, and her legacy of love and strength will live on through them.

Marlene dedicated her life to her children, and family. She enjoyed attending many sporting events and watching the Kansas Jayhawks and Chicago Cubs (she also liked watching the Game Show Network).

She retired from Tony’s Pizza in Salina, Kansas after 27 years. She is remembered for her work ethic, her volunteer service at Beverly United Methodist Church, and many other activities. Her commitment to family was a testament to her kind nature and her belief in making the world a better place. She was extremely proud of her children and everything they accomplished.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 28, 2024, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Beverly Community Center, in Beverly, Kansas, with a meal preceding at 1:00 p.m. for those who wish to attend. Q: You will be the first two teams to play a regular season game with the new kickoff rules, what does that mean to you?

TOUB: “We don’t know what to expect from them, they don’t know what to expect from us, but we’ve got a lot of practice in on it with the spikes kicks and the zone. We’ll see what we get, we’ll see what we do (laughter). We’ll find out Thursday night.”

Q: How has the chemistry and operation been on special teams since Matt Araiza joined the team?

TOUB: “Matt (Araiza) has done a fantastic job. I mean, him and (Harrison) Butker, they haven’t missed a beat – at all, really. They’re fine, the operation’s good. I’m excited to see Matt, as a punter, you know obviously his first game – first regular season game, so it’s going to be an exciting night.”

Q: What do you like about having Peyton Hendershot on special teams?

TOUB: “He’s (Peyton Hendershot) played all four phases. He’s done it. He was a good player at Dallas (Cowboys), we’re excited to have him on the roster. He’s a possible guy that can come in and fill a backup role, at this point. He just got here a week ago, so we’re not going to ask him to do a lot right now. There is a chance he could be up. If he’s up, then he’ll be in that role.”

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR STEVE SPAGNUOLO

Q: What’s your excitement level for kickoff?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“(I’m) fired up. Listen, it’s the first game, it’s been a long training camp (and) we’re anxious to hit somebody else. Then, the other thing is (that) we really haven’t had our guys – the starting crew out there very much, so we’ve got a lot to kind of figure out on the go, which is what the first game’s all about. You don’t know what you’re going to get. They haven’t shown us much (and) we haven’t shown them much and it’s kind of the in-game adjustments that are really important in this game.”

Q: How do you see the second cornerback spot?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“It’s an unanswered question right now, to be honest with you. With the injuries that we dealt with and the guys in and out, it was hard to say, ‘This is the guy that won the job,’ so, there will probably be a bunch of them (cornerbacks) playing. We mix and match a lot anyway, so there will be a lot of that going on.”

Q: How important is the slot corner to be effective in the run game? Especially against the Ravens?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“Really important for that exact reason. I mean, the expectation is (that) they’re going to come in here and try to run it – which we get it. Hopefully, we can get them in situations where they’ve got to throw and we can be good against that because this team – listen, they get noted as a running team – they can do everything. They have really good wide outs, their quarterback can extend the down, we all know that. He’s (Ravens QB Lamar Jackson) accurate. I mean, we’ve got a great deal of respect for them. They’re well coached, you guys know how I feel about (Ravens Head Coach) John (Harbaugh), so it’s going to be a tremendous challenge right out of the gate here in the first game of the season.”

Q: What tells you Xavier Worthy is ready for this game against the Ravens?

NAGY:&nbsp;“Probably the biggest thing is making sure that we understand that this is going to be an emotional game and understanding that there is going to be some moments where there’s a mistake with a route assignment or – but there is also going to be some big plays. This game is about preparation for all of us as coaches and then for the players, it's being able to be proficient within their execution. He (Xavier Worthy) falls into that, it's his first time doing it. We have – he’s not the only one, we have some other guys that (it) will be their first time in GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium (and) their first time playing in an NFL game. For Xavier, he’s done everything we have asked him to do mentally (and) the physical challenge will show up. It's going to be a physical game with an experienced defense, and they’re very well coached.”

Q:&nbsp;When did Carson Steele spark your interest?

NAGY:&nbsp;“Personally for me, I think it started with all of us, really, just his (Carson Steele) assignments in OTAs were pretty crisp. He knew what he was doing (and) he knew where he was going. You never know how he’s going to do until you put the pads on. He took it to training camp and put the pads on (and) made some nice plays. A splash play here or there definitely helps, but it has to be consistent over periods of plays and series of drives. I thought he did that. There’s still some things that internally we know he can get better at (and) he knows it. Now, you take it to the Thursday Night Football against a really good football team. Again, balancing the emotions of understanding there will be some mistakes but do it 100 percent, 100 percent of the time and he does that.”

Q: Preparing for this first game how have you planned to tackle it?

NAGY:&nbsp;“This game coming up, for every team coming up, this whole first week is all about adapting, that’s it. How do you adapt? How well do you adapt? They have a new defensive coordinator (and it’s the) first time that he (Ravens Defensive Coordinator Zach Orr) is calling plays. Whether it’s the same or different, we’ll see. They’re going to have some un-scouted looks and we’re going to see some things that are different – how do we adjust? Making sure that our guys can play fast is important but a lot of respect for them. It’s going to be a physical game.”

Q:&nbsp;Is the excitement level the same going into year nine?

JONES:&nbsp;“Absolutely. I think it’s always a butterfly feeling when you (are) getting closer to the game and actually the first play of the game, (I) still get butterflies. I think when that feeling goes away then – my time here is coming up, but as long as I’m getting that feeling, I’m still here. I’m still excited to play, I’m still excited to see the potential of this team (that) we have and finally be able to hit somebody else other than my teammates.”

Q:&nbsp;Last year, your defense was statistically the best. How does that raise the level of play going into this season?

JONES:&nbsp;“I think every year has its own challenges. Last year was a special group. Whether it’s from a guy like (Tennessee Titans Cornerback) L’Jarius Sneed coming in being an All-Pro (or) a young guy like two-two, (Trent) McDuffie coming in, another All-Pro. I mean, we had some special pieces on that defense. Year in and year out, every year he has a different team, every year is a new team. Last year, we faced a lot of adversity early on in the season, and we kind of turned it around during Christmas. Hopefully, this year we can amp it up and don’t have to get to December to make that adjust so we’re looking forward to the first game.”

• K-State’s offense has new faces at the front of room as Conor Riley, the offensive line coach the last five seasons, will add playcalling duties to his repertoire for the first time in his career, while K-State hired former Utah State and Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells to serve as co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and associate head coach.

• Riley was the interim offensive coordinator in K-State’s 28-19 victory over NC State in the 2023 Pop-Tarts Bowl, a game in which the Wildcats amassed 257 rushing yards and 435 total yards on a Wolfpack defense that entered bowl season ranking No. 16 and No. 25 in those categories, respectively.

• Wells, who boasts nine years of head coaching experience, came to Manhattan after spending the last two years at Oklahoma as an advisor to head coach/offensive analyst. In addition to coaching quarterbacks during his 27-year coaching career, Wells has also spent time tutoring wide receivers and tight ends.

TOTAL OFFENSE• K-State has totaled at least 375 yards of offense in 23 of the last 28 games dating back to the beginning of the 2022 season. During that stretch, the Cats held a 10-game streak against Big 12 foes with 375 or more yards, the longest in school history.

• K-State ranked 23rd nationally last year by averaging 445.2 yards per game. That figure ranked second in school history, while K-State’s 6.04 yards per play ranked 10th.SCORING SURGE• K-State finished last year ranked 10th nationally by scoring 37.1 points per game, a mark ranked sixth in school history.

• It was the first time the Wildcats finished in the top 10 in the country in scoring offense since 2003 (9th), while it was their highest average since 2012 (38.8).THIRD DOWN SUCCESS• Kansas State was one of the best teams in the nation last year in terms of converting on third down, as the Wildcats ranked 11th nationally with a 47.9% (90-of-188) success rate.

• K-State’s 90 total third-down conversions last year ranked fifth in the country and was tops in the Big 12.RED ZONE SUCCESS• Just like on third downs, K-State was one of the nation’s leaders in turning red-zone trips into touchdowns during the 2023 season, as the Cats ranked second nationally by finding paydirt on 78.46% percent of their red-zone possessions (51-of-65).

• K-State just narrowly finished behind Oregon State by 0.11% and would have led the nation had the Cats not been in the red zone when taking a knee to close out the Pop-Tarts Bowl win.

• K-State’s 51 red-zone touchdowns in 2023 ranked third nationally behind Oregon and Georgia (56), while the Cats had five more than the next closest Big 12 team (Oklahoma – 46).

• The 2024 season opened with a continuation of red-zone success under Chris Klieman, as the Wildcats rank first among active Big 12 programs by scoring on 90.6% (230-of-254) of their overall red-zone trips since 2019 with 172 touchdowns.NOT LACKING IN EXPERIENCE• Although the offensive line lost four starters from a year, the starting unit is not lacking in experience as the current group has totaled 78 career starts and 5,540 career snaps.

• The leaders in those departments are North Dakota transfer tackle Easton Kilty (38 starts, 2,422 snaps), guard Hadley Panzer (27 starts, 1,796 snaps), tackle Carver Willis (eight starts, 642 snaps) and guard Taylor Poitier (four starts, 571 snaps).YOUNG BUT EXPLOSIVE• Avery Johnson, the top dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2023, is beginning his first full season as K-State’s starting quarterback a year after becoming just the first true freshman signal caller in school history to start and win a bowl game. 99KG's 'Totally 90s Country Labor Day Weekend'

OPENING STATEMENT:&nbsp;“Alright, so I don’t have any of the information – we’ll treat this like a normal Monday, so I don’t have any injury information for you right now. I’ll get it to you Wednesday – what would be a Wednesday, so in a couple (of) days. Listen, we look forward to this challenge of playing the Ravens, they’re a heck of a football team. (Ravens Head Coach) John (Harbaugh) does a great job, along with his coaches, of preparing their guys, and we know that it’ll be a battle royal. It’s one of those games (that) we’ve played over the years and it’s always a knockdown (and) drag-out, so this won’t be any different. We’re glad that we have an opportunity to play here at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium and we know the fans will be loud and aggressive. We’ve just got to make sure that we take care of our business as a football team and eliminate those early season mistakes that take place with every team. You’ve got to make sure that you limit those and hang on to the football. Fumbles are always up early in the season (so) you’ve got to make sure that you take care of the ball. All those fundamentals that we’ve talked about during training camp and you guys (the media) have asked me about, we’ve got to make sure we’ve got those down pat by the time we get there (to the game). Anyways, with that, the time’s yours.”

Q: What do you like about the additions of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Samaje Perine?

REID:&nbsp;“Samaje (Perine) is the newest member. We all know what he did to us when he was at Cincinnati with that screenplay. Samaje’s done this over his career where he’s been a phenomenal third-down back, but he’s also a good runner. I think that you know that he’s really a good person. I mean, that word has traveled around the National Football League on what kind of guy he is – locker room guy and so on. We welcome that. The opportunity to have a guy in here that can do the run game and the pass game, I think he's a good well-rounded football player that’s extremely intelligent, that is a great addition that (General Manager) Brett (Veach) added to the team. With JuJu (Smith-Schuster), we welcome JuJu back with open arms. He’s healthy and ready to go. His knee – he had the knee (injury) before, but we were able to manage that. We’ll continue to manage it. He looks great right now. He jumped right back in and had some good practices for us. It’s just a matter of him getting banged around a little bit having not been in camp. He’ll get all that as the season goes, but it’s good to have him back in the mix there for sure.”

Q: Do you see a realistic chance that Hollywood Brown plays in the first game?

REID:&nbsp;“I don’t think you’ll have Hollywood (Brown) this week. Hollywood won’t be back this week and we’ll just see how it goes. The kid’s amazing. His progress has been incredible, but I don’t – I wouldn’t predict him being there this week.”

Q: Is there going to be some intent to try and get every healthy receiver in the mix Week 1 to build their chemistry with Patrick Mahomes?

REID:&nbsp;“Well, I think all of them have that. Obviously, one that is unknown is (Xavier) Worthy having not played in an NFL game, a real NFL game, other than a preseason game with him and practice. What I’ve seen is that they have a pretty good thing going, and we’ll just see how it goes when things are flying here – fast and furious. The other guys, he’s got a history with and knows and trusts.”

Q: How comfortable are you with Xavier Worthy heading into game one of the regular season?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah Sam (McDowell), I think he wants to do the right thing. So, he spends a lot of time with Pat (Patrick Mahomes), and the other receivers (and) the veteran guys just figuring out what Pat’s expecting, or where he needs to be, or what the coaches are asking him to do. He’s not afraid to ask and then, he’s been willing to try everything. Whether it’s an inside route, one of those intermediate routes, or long routes, he’s been very willing to get in there and mix it up. I like what I’ve seen, I just – like any rookie that’s coming into this thing, you want to see how they do in the games, but you’d think he’d probably do okay.”

Q: Have you prepared for the mandatory interviews the NFL will be doing with coaches during every game? What are your thoughts on it?

REID:&nbsp;“I’m not very good during games on interviews. I’m sure I’m not going to tickle anybody’s fancy there, with these interviews. Listen, I’ve got to do it – I’m going to do it. I’m an NFL team guy, so I’m going to do it, but don’t expect much.”

Q: Do you anticipate JuJu Smith-Schuster and Samaje Perine to be available against the Ravens?

REID:&nbsp;“Yes absolutely, yeah, I think so. I just have to see with (Samaje) Perine on where he’s at and picking everything up. I’m not going to put him in a bad situation obviously, but I think he’s going to be fine. He’s been in here cranking away, so we’ll see how everything goes.”

Q: How do you feel about your roster right now? Do you think you have everything you need?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think (General Manager) Brett (Veach) and his guys have done a great job with this whole thing and practice squad included there. I know there’ll be changes as things go on, I get all that, but I like what we’ve got here and we’ve just got to – the bottom line is you’ve got to do it and play now. It’s not going to change that much from what you have right now. We’ve got to make sure that we get in and practice and go through that whole process and really focus in on the Ravens, so we’ll have a chance to do that starting tomorrow.”

Q: What do you tell the new guys who weren’t a part of last year’s AFC Championship or the pageantry of opening night to get their mindset ready for the game?

OPENING STATEMENT:&nbsp;“Alright, so I don’t have any of the information – we’ll treat this like a normal Monday, so I don’t have any injury information for you right now. I’ll get it to you Wednesday – what would be a Wednesday, so in a couple (of) days. Listen, we look forward to this challenge of playing the Ravens, they’re a heck of a football team. (Ravens Head Coach) John (Harbaugh) does a great job, along with his coaches, of preparing their guys, and we know that it’ll be a battle royal. It’s one of those games (that) we’ve played over the years and it’s always a knockdown (and) drag-out, so this won’t be any different. We’re glad that we have an opportunity to play here at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium and we know the fans will be loud and aggressive. We’ve just got to make sure that we take care of our business as a football team and eliminate those early season mistakes that take place with every team. You’ve got to make sure that you limit those and hang on to the football. Fumbles are always up early in the season (so) you’ve got to make sure that you take care of the ball. All those fundamentals that we’ve talked about during training camp and you guys (the media) have asked me about, we’ve got to make sure we’ve got those down pat by the time we get there (to the game). Anyways, with that, the time’s yours.”Q: What do you like about the additions of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Samaje Perine?REID:&nbsp;“Samaje (Perine) is the newest member. We all know what he did to us when he was at Cincinnati with that screenplay. Samaje’s done this over his career where he’s been a phenomenal third-down back, but he’s also a good runner. I think that you know that he’s really a good person. I mean, that word has traveled around the National Football League on what kind of guy he is – locker room guy and so on. We welcome that. The opportunity to have a guy in here that can do the run game and the pass game, I think he's a good well-rounded football player that’s extremely intelligent, that is a great addition that (General Manager) Brett (Veach) added to the team. With JuJu (Smith-Schuster), we welcome JuJu back with open arms. He’s healthy and ready to go. His knee – he had the knee (injury) before, but we were able to manage that. We’ll continue to manage it. He looks great right now. He jumped right back in and had some good practices for us. It’s just a matter of him getting banged around a little bit having not been in camp. He’ll get all that as the season goes, but it’s good to have him back in the mix there for sure.”Q: Do you see a realistic chance that Hollywood Brown plays in the first game?REID:&nbsp;“I don’t think you’ll have Hollywood (Brown) this week. Hollywood won’t be back this week and we’ll just see how it goes. The kid’s amazing. There is, for sure, a lot of excitement associated with the beginning of another school year.

But Elaine Johannes, the Kansas Health Foundation’s Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University, says parents should also be aware that their teenager may at the same time be coping with anxiety and stress.

“The way that middle school and high school students do school today is different from what I did many years ago, when it meant only that we were going to school physically,” Johannes said.

Today, she said, “many of our students have remote learning part of the day – maybe at home, but maybe even at school. And then some have a dual enrollment in which they are taking college courses, perhaps at the high school, maybe remotely, or they’re driving to a nearby college campus.”

Factor in friendships, academics, sports, extra-curricular activities, a side job (for some) and more, and the onset of school is not always an easy transition for teenagers.

“When we think about back-to-school as one generalized topic,” Johannes said, “there are a lot of things that can create anxiety and stress.”

To help their teenager adjust, Johannes suggests parents establish a solid foundation at home, including a routine of sleep, a healthy diet and appropriate physical activity.

“Another part of that foundation is practice,” Johannes said. “Practice getting up, getting to school on time, getting on the Internet. The basics of success – which includes good physical and mental health – can be helped through routine, consistency and communication.”

They don’t want to say anything more. But maybe during the evening there is time for inquiry when parents can listen to their child’s response without judging it or putting an achievement indicator on it.”Johannes pointed to a line of research known as mattering, which she says “aims to help young people know that they matter in our lives; they matter more than a test score or getting an assignment in.”When asking youth about their school day, Johannes suggests asking open-ended questions, such as:What did you learn?What did you try that was different?“You know, we're talking about young people whose brains are not yet fully formed,” Johannes said. “So we want to give them time to develop, and we want there to be kind of a rocky development, because that young person is testing who they are, and they may not figure that out for quite a while.”“As parents,” she adds, “we watch, we wait and we support and we figure out if our child has a talent or interest, or they change their interests because of development.
