GOP majority on 10-member state panel hangs in balance in 2026 election

TOPEKA — In an extraordinary turn of events, five Republican incumbents on the Kansas Board of Education due to stand for reelection this year decided to step aside.

Fourteen candidates filed by the June 1 deadline to campaign for state Board of Education seats up for grabs in 2026. Every two years, five of 10 state board positions appear on Kansas ballots. While Republicans prepare for contested primaries Aug. 4 in three of five district races, Democrats fielded a single candidate in all five districts.

The openings were created by pending departure of three-term incumbent Jim Porter of Fredonia and two-term member Michelle Dombrosky of Olathe, who accepted an offer to be lieutenant governor running mate for GOP gubernatorial candidate Charlotte O’Hara. The one-term incumbents declining to seek reelection were Danny Zeck of Leavenworth, Cathy Hopkins of Hays and Dennis Hershberger of Hutchinson.

Three of the five state Board of Education members not up for reelection until 2028 are Democrats, so this election cycle could reset the partisan balance for the next two years. A current GOP majority on the board oversees the Kansas Department of Education and maintains constitutional supervision of K-12 education policy and standards applicable to 475,000 public school students.

In the Third District in Johnson County, the GOP primary features former state board member Steve Roberts, who is rebounding from an unsuccessful political career pivot. Roberts lost a 2020 bid for U.S. Senate and a November campaign for the Blue Valley school board.

His rival in the Third District primary is Jim McMullen, who was ousted from the Blue Valley school board by voters in 2025. In 2022, McMullen was stripped of his vice presidency of the Blue Valley school board after posting to social media that it was imperative society stand against transgender advocacy because it invited “kids to hate their God-given bodies.” He said students were victims of ideological poisoning, and he compared trans health care to child abuse.

The winner of the McMullen and Roberts contest would take on Democrat Amy Diediker, a former Olathe music teacher. She said every Kansas student deserved access to a “high-quality school, safe and supportive learning environments and opportunities that prepare them for college, careers and life.”

In central Kansas’ Seventh District, Salina school board member Ann Zimmerman, a Democrat, and Abilene home-school cooperative founder Alana McWilliams, a Republican, will run unopposed in the primary.

McWilliams, who has two children with dyslexia, started a business, Designed to Learn, to provide tutoring for students struggling with reading and writing. She said her campaign would concentrate on advancing reading proficiency among public school students.

“Three of four Kansas students are not reading at grade level,” she said. “We cannot keep telling families to wait while children fall further behind.”

She alleged the state Board of Education responded to low reading assessment scores by implementing a “softer test” in an attempt to quickly boost outcomes in Kansas.

Zimmerman, a graduate of Kansas State University and the Harvard law school, was reelected to a four-year term on the Salina school board in November 2023. In Salina, she has worked as a professional mediator. Her priorities for the state Board of Education included improving on the state’s 90.5% high school graduation rate.

“To get there,” Zimmerman said, “we need to increase the sense of belonging for students across the board from preschool to seniors, low-income to high, light skinned to dark, girls and boys and every variation.”

The Fifth District campaign involves one Democrat and two Republicans, including a former member of the state Board of Education.

Jean Clifford, a Garden City resident who ran for reelection to the state board in 2022 but lost the GOP primary to Hopkins, is attempting a comeback. Clifford, spouse of Republican state Sen. Bill Clifford, is a retired U.S. Air Force attorney who served on the Garden City school board.

In the past, Clifford emphasized expansion of broadband to support rural schools and objected to instruction informed by the existence of systematic racism. She said critical race theory had no place in K-12 curriculum and “should not be taught explicitly, implicitly or in the organizations, clubs or activities of Kansas public schools.”

Kelly Ancar, a Hays Republican operating Amazing Grace Home Care, filed to oppose Clifford in the Fifth District primary. Ancar was unsuccessful in a campaign for Hays school board but filed in anticipation of applying business principles to operation of the state board.

“I understand policies and understand the economics of running a business, and the school board can be looked at that way,” she told the Hays Post.

The winner of that primary would appear on the November ballot against Lorie Wood, a Democrat from Dresden with 30 years of experience in education.

The First District contest matches Republican Amy Cawvey of Lansing against Democrat Jennifer Lloyd of Ozawkie. Lloyd is an elementary school librarian at Jefferson West. Cawvey served one term on the Lansing school board before departing in 2025. She leads the Kansas chapter of the National School Boards Coalition, which strives to promote school choice, transparency and accountability.

“Grateful that I will not have a primary and now heading to the general election. So much needs to change with Kansas education,” Cawley said.

In the Ninth District, a three-way Republican primary must determine which candidate opposes Democrat Heather Guernsey of Chanute in November. Guernsey earned an education degree at Emporia State University and taught school in Olathe before moving to Chanute. In 2021, she won a seat on Chanute’s school board.

“I’m running because I believe every child deserves an excellent education,” she said. “It shouldn’t matter where you live or what your parents can afford. Kansas students and parents deserve leaders who will listen, stay focused on education and work collaboratively to support strong schools in every community.”

The district’s Republican primary features Fort Scott Superintendent Destry Brown, Paola school board member Kristian Gerken and Parker resident Renee Slinkard, who was unsuccessful in a bid for a seat on the Prairie View School District’s board.

Kan. political battles await after 5 Republicans decline to seek reelection to Board of Education

A complex of strong to severe storms will move over parts of central Kansas on Monday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service, these storms are expected to occur throughout parts of central and eastern Kansas this evening.&nbsp;The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging winds of 60-80 mph, hail up to golf ball size, and heavy rain. A brief tornado may also be possible.

The agency has also placed Salina under a Flood Watch, with a 60 percent chance of showers for Monday evening.

Three day weather forecast Salina, June 8 - June 10

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;is dismissing the idea that launching&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/iran">the war with Iran</a>&nbsp;this year betrayed his refrain of “No new wars” that he made repeatedly as he campaigned again for the White House.

Trump, in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC's “Meet the Press,” said he “didn't guarantee” there would be no wars if he were back in office.

"First of all, I didn’t guarantee no war. Why would I have built the strongest military in the world?" Trump said.

Trump also defended plans for a now-scrapped&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-lawsuit-irs-leak-3729de38770b558be01712a143437bf8">$1.8 billion fund</a>&nbsp;that would have compensated allies of the Republican president and he repeated his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-primary-ballot-counting-votes-trump-51e814c6a490766276f9a0cc856dc65f">baseless claims</a>&nbsp;of mass fraud in California’s drawn-out vote count from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/projects/elections-2026/california-primary-results/">Tuesday’s primary</a>. He ended the interview abruptly when he became frustrated with pushback from NBC's Kristen Welker.

In his 2024 campaign, Trump repeatedly cast his Democratic opponents as warmongers and said he was a president who started “no new wars" and would bring an era of peace.

But Trump said in the NBC interview, taped Friday in Wisconsin, that as a candidate, “I didn’t promise anything.”

“I don’t like these endless wars. This is not an endless war. We’ve been doing this for three months,” he said of the war with Iran, which began Feb. 28.

Trump said he was “doing the world a service” and “doing our country a service” because he had to stop Iran from having a nuclear weapon. But elsewhere in the interview, Trump repeated a contradictory message where he said U.S. strikes last year “obliterated” Iranian nuclear sites.

He also defended his decision in his first term to withdraw from Democratic President Barack Obama's nuclear deal with Iran, an agreement he has heavily criticized, without negotiating the “better deal” he has promised to reach.

“It takes years to do these things,” Trump said.

Trump without evidence claims fraud in California vote

California's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-primary-governor-becerra-bianco-hilton-porter-steyer-0766ab730ddc4bbe524f5c94f95c8395">notoriously prolonged vote</a>&nbsp;count has been a magnet for election conspiracy theories, and Trump since Tuesday's election has claimed without evidence that Democrats are rigging the election. The Trump-appointed top federal prosecutor in Los Angeles said Friday&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-primary-ballot-counting-trump-investigation-22b06b32abdca1eb638b1603fcac27fc">that his office had opened</a>&nbsp;“multiple election fraud investigations.”

Late-tallied Democratic-leaning mail ballots have eaten into the vote totals for Trump's preferred candidates for governor and Los Angeles mayor. While Trump has often said that changes to vote totals as late ballots are counted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-ballot-counting-election-day-deadline-california-d9403415687f7f0a0e2c8749511f6652">are a sign of fraud</a>, they are merely a reflection of a slow vote-counting process.

Trump in the interview kept claiming that it was a sign of “cheating” and “a rigged election," and grew increasingly frustrated as Welker pressed him for evidence to support that.

“All I have to do is look. All I have to do is look,” Trump said.

“But that’s not evidence,” Welker responded.

“And I listen. And I listen to people. And let’s see what happens,” Trump replied.

Trump defended plans that his Department of Justice said it has now abandoned to create a $1.776 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund” as part of a settlement to resolve Trump's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-treasury-irs-tax-records-e3a79e1bfdc94a663504754af80ce183">lawsuit against the IRS</a>&nbsp;over the leak of his tax returns.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/blanche-fund-justice-department-january-6-c06a4aa4a1052055bc67c4a0a54984e3">Wednesday</a>&nbsp;that the department was scrapping the plan. That announcement came after the plan was paused by a judge and after both Democrats and some Republicans said they were concerned about the fund's lack of oversight and the possibility of payouts being made to participants in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/projects/january-6-cases/">Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol</a>.

Trump told NBC he thought the fund was “a great idea” and that he would be “disappointed” if it were not approved.

When asked if he thought people who attacked police officers on Jan. 6 should get a payout, Trump said, “I wouldn’t be inclined to say so, but I have to see it." He then began making unfounded and false claims about the riot and those who stormed the Capitol. Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-riot-trump-pardons-jan-6-f6e23bcd84eaed672318c88f05286767">granted a sweeping pardon</a>&nbsp;on his first day back in office in January 2025 to the more than 1,500 people prosecuted over Jan. 6.

The NBC interview was conducted in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, before Trump was set to speak at a roundtable event with farmers. The interview was repeatedly interrupted as waves of heavy rain fell on the metal roof of the barn where the taping took place, making it difficult at times to hear.

At the end, Welker pressed Trump on the settlement fund and his claims about the California election. Trump raised his voice and began calling Welker and the media “crooked," attacking her credibility and complaining about what he called “the fake, dirty press.”

As Welker tried to switch subjects, Trump continued on and there was cross talk between the two. Trump ended the interview, saying said, “Let's call it quits." He took off his microphone, telling Welker, “Thank you, darling. Have a good time." He said he had given the interview enough time, stood up and walked away.

Welker said during the broadcast that she spoke to Trump on Saturday and he agreed the rain had caused complications and said he would do another interview in the future.

The interview was repeatedly interrupted as waves of heavy rain fell on the metal roof of the barn where the taping took place, making it difficult at times to hear.At the end, Welker pressed Trump on the settlement fund and his claims about the California election. Trump raised his voice and began calling Welker and the media “crooked," attacking her credibility and complaining about what he called “the fake, dirty press.”As Welker tried to switch subjects, Trump continued on and there was cross talk between the two. Trump ended the interview, saying said, “Let's call it quits." He took off his microphone, telling Welker, “Thank you, darling. Have a good time." <a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina</a>&nbsp;students have chosen new leadership for the upcoming academic year, selecting a duo with extensive experience in the Student Government Association, or SGA.

Nakiya Woodley, junior in mechanical engineering technology, El Paso, Texas, and&nbsp;Elaina Schmidt, a junior double-majoring in aviation management and professional pilot, Junction City; have been elected by the student body as the SGA president and vice president, respectively, for the next academic year.

Woodley’s campus leadership experience includes serving as a senator in SGA this past year and as the mechanical engineering technology liaison, representing other students in that degree. Schmidt was the community service coordinator in SGA over the past academic year.

While both Woodley and Schmidt have excelled in becoming involved on campus, their connection runs deeper than running for and winning a student-body election.

The duo started out as roommates in the same residence hall, and over time, developed a friendship built on respect and communication. The duo plans to put their skills to use as leaders on campus and major supporters of the K-State Salina student population.

“One of our biggest goals for next year is improving communication between students, organizations and administration so students feel more informed and involved,” said Woodley. “Elaina and I want to continue improving representation for all students, especially engineering students, veterans and students in technical programs, to feel better connected to campus. Overall, I want students to feel like their voices matter and that SGA is approachable and supportive.”

From the Lone Star State to the Little Apple to the Smoky Hills

Woodley began her college journey at the K-State Manhattan campus before changing majors, which landed her at the Salina campus. While she enjoyed her time in Manhattan, Woodley says she quickly realized that the environment in Salina would be a better fit for her and her career goals.

As a fourth grader, Woodley became interested in robotics, specifically building and understanding the mechanics behind machines. Now, Woodley hopes to make a career out of her hobby.

“After graduation, I hope to go into manufacturing engineering with an emphasis on research and development,” Woodley said. “I really enjoy improving processes, solving problems and finding ways to make systems and designs work better. I also want to continue volunteering with FIRST Robotics because it played such a big role in helping me get into engineering in the first place. Being able to mentor students and give back to a program that helped shape me is something that is important to me.”

Much of Woodley’s growth and self-discovery has shaped who she is today. While people might notice the leadership positions and her involvement on campus, they might not always see the effort Woodley puts into solving issues across all aspects of her life.

She notes that there have been times when she has questioned herself and ultimately decided to change directions from a previous plan. In those times of uncertainty, Woodley discovered that leadership isn’t always about being perfect or meeting people’s expectations. Rather, it’s about taking those imperfect experiences, learning from them, being genuine and continuing to grow.

Woodley has learned a lot about leadership from both of her parents, with her father being active-duty military and stationed around the country before retiring in 2017 and settling in Parkville, Missouri. Her mother, who had the primary role in raising the rest of Woodley’s family, also found the time to manage a business.

Watching her mother’s hard work instilled many of the values that Woodley uses to this day. She learned that nothing improves when people are unwilling to take responsibility and put action behind their words.

“The biggest values that guide my decision-making are honesty, accountability, empathy and growth,” Woodley said. “I think leadership is about listening to people, being honest even when conversations are difficult, and actually following through on what you say you are going to do. I also try to approach situations with understanding because every student has different experiences and perspectives.”

Woodley was honored earlier this year with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DVjIxibFFrR/">Barbara Jordan Award and Outstanding Junior of the Year awards for the Big 12 Black Student Government</a>.

For Schmidt, what started out as a joke between friends has blossomed into an obsession and career path with limitless potential.

While trying to figure out what interests she had that could be turned into a career with a friend, Schmidt unlocked an idea.

“Thinking about being a pilot started almost as a joke,” said Schmidt. “My best friend had told me I just wasn't meant to be a plumber — my current career fixation at the time — and I disagreed, of course, but as a joke I said, ‘Well what do you think I should be? A pilot?’ She said, ‘Yes, why not?’ That started a new obsession with everything pilot related, and by the end of my junior year in high school, I was set on the career and of course K-State.”

She says that the K-State Salina campus was the clear choice for her and her future.

“When I started seriously considering aviation as a degree path, K-State Salina came up consistently both financially and opportunity-wise with the mountain flying, the competitive teams offered here, like Air Race Classic and Flight Team, and the many other opportunities that students here are awarded,” Schmidt said. “I had been a K-Stater all my life; both my parents went to K-State, and a few grandparents. I think one of my first outfits was even a purple Wildcat onesie, so it kind of came together perfectly.”

For the better part of her life, Schmidt has prided herself on being involved and developing into a leader. She was involved in various clubs, including the Technology Student Association and National Honors Society, while at Junction City High School. She had also held just about every leadership position in 4-H. By the time she arrived at K-State Salina, Schmidt felt she needed to continue to uphold those values as part of her identity at her new home.

Schmidt started by joining some of the many club offerings at K-State Salina. From there, she became involved with SGA and eventually served as the Service Coordinator for the campus student-led organization.

Schmidt says that much of her drive was instilled in her by her parents.

“Both of my parents are the reason I was involved in so many clubs and organizations from a young age,” said Schmidt. “I definitely have them to thank for where I’m at now. My dad has been especially influential in my life — he’s always down for a good conversation and provides balanced support for my goals.”

After graduation, Schmidt hopes to continue her career in aviation in an area where she is passionate. Right now, the environmental side of the industry is growing, and she sees potential in firefighting or in air medicine. And while those options remain open, Schmidt also sees an opportunity to continue to help others in the aviation industry by teaching and mentoring the next generation of pilots.

Earlier this year, Schmidt organized a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DVMqduRjZat/?img_index=1">meal packaging challenge</a>, where she and other K-State Salina students, faculty and staff volunteered to pack 8,000 meals in one hour as a part of the Outreach Program’s Packing with a Purpose challenge. Those meals were then distributed to organizations that help those in need in Saline County.

“I want to create growth through new possibilities, new resources and better processes,” Schmidt said. “But I also want consistent stability. In terms of student government, for the students, I think of stability because it means safe; a safe place for students to get those resources and possibilities, not everything changing in a way that creates confusion and uncertainty. Ultimately, I hope my decisions show a balance of those two values.”

If you were playing a trivia game and the question was: “What song topped the Billboard chart on December 4, 1965?” You would be a select group if you correctly answered: “Turn, Turn, Turn.” A short-lived (1964-1973) five-member band recorded the song and watched it skyrocket up the charts. It would be incorrect to say that The Byrds actually wrote that song because it was essentially taken word for word from Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament. The words that resonated with listeners in 1965 was the call for peace in the song. If you read the lyrics, though, they will tell you that there is a season for everything. As a farmer I am very aware of each season of the calendar and the corresponding farming activity associated with it.

Starting this week, the Kansas political season officially opened. The filing deadline on June 1 at precisely 12:00 noon determined who will and who won’t be seeking political office this year. For some in the Kansas House the “Season of Representing the people is over.” Nearly 25% of last year’s House of Representatives are not returning for the 2026-27 session. There are many contested primary and general elections for House members. The total number of candidates filed for 125 seats is 260. It will be a busy election season and even more interesting is the race to see who will replace Governor Kelly as the next Governor.

When the clock struck noon in Topeka on June 1st, ten separate teams of governor and lieutenant governor had filed. Three of those teams are on the Democrat side and seven filed as Republicans. The following list in alphabetical order will help acquaint you with their names:

Ethan Corson and Renee Duxler (D). Ethan is currently a member of the Kansas Senate and Renee is serving as the director of the Salina Chamber of Commerce.

Cindy Holscher and KC Ohaebosim (D). Cindy is currently a member of the Kansas Senate and KC is a member of the House of Representatives.

Ty Masterson and Jeffrey Klemp (R). Ty and Jeffrey are both currently members of the Kansas Senate.

Charlotte O’Hara and Michelle Drombrosky (R). Charlotte is a former member of the Kansas House of Representatives and Michelle is currently serving on the State Board of Education.

Nick Reinecker and Katy Reinecker (R). The Reineckers are a married couple who own a business in McPherson county.

Stacy L Rogers and Michael W. Smith (R). Stacy is a business owner from Wichita and Michael from Lansing has nearly four decades of experience in local and county government.

Philip Sarnecki and Joy Eakins (R). Philip is a businessman from Bucyrus. Joy is a businesswoman and former school board member from Wichita.

Vicki Schmidt and Joe Newland (R). Vicki is the Insurance Commissioner for Kansas and Joe is the President of Kansas Farm Bureau.

Scott Schwab and Ken Rahjes (R). Scott is the Kansas Secretary of State and Ken is a member of the Kansas House of Representatives.

For some in the Kansas House the “Season of Representing the people is over.” Nearly 25% of last year’s House of Representatives are not returning for the 2026-27 session. There are many contested primary and general elections for House members. The total number of candidates filed for 125 seats is 260. It will be a busy election season and even more interesting is the race to see who will replace Governor Kelly as the next Governor.When the clock struck noon in Topeka on June 1st, ten separate teams of governor and lieutenant governor had filed. Three of those teams are on the Democrat side and seven filed as Republicans. The following list in alphabetical order will help acquaint you with their names:Ethan Corson and Renee Duxler (D). Ethan is currently a member of the Kansas Senate and Renee is serving as the director of the Salina Chamber of Commerce.Cindy Holscher and KC Ohaebosim (D). Cindy is currently a member of the Kansas Senate and KC is a member of the House of Representatives.Ty Masterson and Jeffrey Klemp (R). Helen Louise Haddock, 96 of Salina, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 29th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, independence, and quiet strength.

Helen was born in Salina, Kansas, on December 17, 1929, a daughter of Josephine (Ebert) and Earl Callabresi. She lived a long and meaningful life filled with love and appreciation for life’s simple joys. She was known for her sweet nature, warm smile, and independent spirit. Even into her later years, she maintained a remarkable sense of self-reliance and determination that inspired those around her.

On August 15, 1948, Helen joyfully married Marvin Haddock in Salina, Kansas. The couple has deep roots in Solomon, Kansas, where they lived for many decades, building a life together.

She had a keen eye for antiques and greatly enjoyed attending auctions, always on the lookout for unique hidden gems. Her flower gardens were a source of pride and beauty, carefully cultivated with countless hours of loving attention, and admired by family, friends, and neighbors. She also enjoyed keeping her mind active with crossword and jigsaw puzzles, often spending hours immersed in their challenges.

More than anything, Helen cherished her family. She offered a listening ear, a gentle word of wisdom, and unwavering love to her family and friends. Her home was a place of comfort, and her presence brought warmth to every gathering.

Survivors include her daughter, Marjorie Griest (Gary), of Bennington, Kansas; 2 grandchildren, Brad Griest (Calyn) and Amy Farstad (Sam); and 4 great-grandchildren, Ryder, Tailee, Madison, and Emma.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin Haddock; her son, Charles Haddock; and her brothers, Richard “Dick” Callabresi and Melvin Callabresi.

Visitation will be on June 4, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home in Salina, Kansas.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 am. Friday, June 5, at Prairie Mound Cemetery, Solomon, Kansas.

The family requests donations be made to Gentiva Hospice.

TOPEKA — Overland Park Mayor Curt Skoog made a late entry into the governor’s race Monday, launching his campaign for the Democratic nomination just three hours ahead of the noon filing deadline.

Skoog, who chose Fredonia physician Jennifer Bacani McKenney as his running mate, said he was motivated to run for governor because he didn’t believe the other Democratic contenders had gained enough traction.

“It was clear that we needed somebody from outside the Legislature to lead this state as governor, and being a mayor brings a whole different perspective to what it takes to run a state like this,” Skoog said. “A dysfunctional Legislature is not a recipe for success in the governor’s office.”

Two Democratic state senators from Johnson County, Cindy Holscher and Ethan Corson, announced their candidacy a year ago. All three of the Democrats claim to be the only candidate who can beat Senate President Ty Masterson, who received President Donald Trump’s endorsement last week. Other prominent Republicans in the race include Secretary of State Scott Schwab, Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt and businessman Philip Sarnecki.

Skoog is serving his second term as mayor of Overland Park, having won reelection in November. He previously had served on the Overland Park City Council since 2005.

He touted the city’s distinction of having the lowest property tax rate in the state, and he faulted Masterson and the Legislature for&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2026/04/14/the-people-of-kansas-lost-last-ditch-attempt-at-property-tax-relief-devolves-into-finger-pointing/">failing to provide property tax relief</a>.

“They have been trying to do last-minute fixes with no public input and no public participation, no public hearings, no process,” Skoog said. “They think they have a solution, but they can’t get it passed.”

Skoog said he grew up as a Republican, with both parents elected to public office as Republicans, and that he changed his party affiliation to Democrat in 2022. He said the Republican party had “changed dramatically” but his values didn’t. He identified those values as transparency, inclusion, consensus and teamwork.

He said his running mate, McKenney, is “an expert on rural healthcare.”

McKenney was a family doctor, the Wilson County health officer, and president of the Fredonia school board when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020.

“So talk about pressure and the need to serve and take care of people,” McKenney said. “That’s what I want to bring to the table.”

McKenney in 2021&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/09/29/their-tank-is-empty-local-public-health-officials-combat-staff-burnout-low-pay-harassment/">testified before Congress</a>&nbsp;about the backlash local health officers were facing. She was a vocal critic of&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/01/21/fact-check-kansas-senators-make-false-claims-about-covid-19-deaths-vaccines-pcr-test/">pandemic-related misinformation</a>.

By waiting until Monday, Skoog joins the race with just two months to go before the Aug. 4 primary. Both Holscher and Corson have spent months campaigning and raising donations.

Gov. Laura Kelly and former Gov. Kathleen Sebelius both endorsed Corson, of Fairway.

Glynnis Harvey, spokeswoman for Corson, said he was the “only candidate in this race who can defeat the divisive, hate-filled, and ineffective MAGA agenda coming to Kansas.”

“This campaign is built on a simple belief: Kansans deserve a leader who listens, works hard, and brings people together to get results,” Harvey said.

Holscher, of Overland Park, has positioned herself as the populist candidate in the primary. She opposed the governor’s deal to lure the Kansas City Chiefs across state lines with a massive incentives package, and she has attacked Corson for taking a donation from CoreCivic two years ago.

Madi Ashcraft, campaign manager for Holscher, said Kansans “aren’t looking for another establishment guy in the race — they already have enough of those.”

“Holscher is the only candidate in this race on either side of the aisle who has a track record of taking on corporate interests and fighting for ordinary Kansans,” Ashcraft said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Shrey Parikh felt his body shake from nerves and doubts every time he walked to the microphone at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the final test of a six-year competitive spelling career marked by triumph and heartbreak that he knew could end at any moment.

Then he listened to pronouncer Jacques Bailly, and his dour body language vanished as he nodded vigorously, his tell that, yes, he knew the words he was asked to spell. All of them.

“Once I get the word,” Shrey said, “I’m not really nervous anymore, because then it’s all in my control.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scripps-national-spelling-bee-cc710f7f1eb5538b361e99327deaf34d">Shrey arrived as a favorite</a>&nbsp;and walked away as a National Spelling Bee champion Thursday night, outlasting a deep and experienced group of finalists and beating Ishaan Gupta in a lightning-round tiebreaker that looked like it was over as soon as Shrey raced through his first word.

His final tally: 32 words spelled correctly in 90 seconds, a record for the shootout-style finish that was first used in 2022.

“I was counting and I’m like, OK, this is more than 30,” said Shrey’s mother, Khyati Mehta. “And at that point, I’m like, ‘I think this is it.’”

Ishaan battled gamely, getting 25 words right during the spell-off, but he was more deliberate and hesitant from the start. The competitors stood next to each other as Scripps officials announced what everyone in a lively crowd at Constitution Hall already knew, and Shrey turned and shook Ishaan’s hand.

After Sarv Dharavane bowed out in third place for the second consecutive year, Shrey and Ishaan had only one conventional round before the buzzer for the spell-off was placed on the stage. Ishaan was escorted away — the tiebreaker is the only time spellers get the same words — and Shrey had a last bout with nerves as he stood there for five minutes while crews tried, and failed, to fix a technical glitch with the buzzer.

“That was really, like, scary for me,” he said.

The spell-off moves so fast that it’s impossible to tell which word secures the title, but Scripps later announced that “bromocriptine” — a polypeptide alkaloid that mimics the activity of dopamine — was the winner. Shrey could get a dopamine hit from the winner’s haul of $52,500 in cash, a custom trophy and a package of prizes.

He becomes the 31st of the past 37 champions with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/spelling-bee-indian-americans-immigration-b14ba87533dfcd8af813de568ee5958f">Indian heritage</a>, a run that began with Nupur Lala’s victory in 1999.

A 14-year-old from Rancho Cucamonga, California, Shrey took an unusual route to the title. He finished third in 2024, but last year he was absent. He missed his regional bee, too — because, woozy from a virus that caused a fever, he blanked on the word “calipers” and bowed out of a competition that any speller of his talent would consider child’s play: the spelling bee at Day Creek Intermediate School.

“Right now I’m probably the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m just so happy and relieved, and just such a flood of emotions,” Shrey said. “At my school bee last year, I was really dejected and just very upset. It didn’t even sink in until the next day. I had a really tough time, but I’m glad I was able to bounce back.”

After a few months off, he rededicated himself, seeking every edge he could find through coaching and study guides. In online bees against many of the same spellers he faced this week in Washington, he won again and again.

“Whenever I would quiz him, he would take notice of his missed words. He’d analyze every missed word he had, try to figure out why he missed it,” said Sohum Sukhatankar, a co-champion in 2019 who coached Shrey along with Sam Evans and Vijaya Ganesh. “All the time I coached him, he’d never miss a word twice.”

Evans, who has worked with each of the past three champions, said Shrey’s work ethic stood out.

“I’ve really never seen someone put this much effort into spelling bees, into learning everything that he possibly can,” Evans said. “Shrey is relentless.”

A high-quality final comes to an abrupt end

The spell-off will never be popular among bee purists who prefer to see the final two contestants go head-to-head for as many rounds as it takes. Because it emphasizes speed and memorization, it lacks the intrigue of watching a speller work out the intricacies of a tricky word with odd vowel patterns or sneaky double consonants.

“It’s a perversion of many values that I and many in the spelling community hold dear,” said Navneeth Murali, who competed through 2020 and now coaches. “I think everyone would have liked to see a duel, but it looks like the spell-off is here to stay. It’s something that we’ll have to adapt to.”

A stout, experienced group of nine finalists showed off their skills by going 18 for 18 at the start, breezing through the first spelling and vocabulary rounds. Aiden Meng ended that streak when he was tripped up by “catometope” to start the second spelling round.

Then the crowd gasped when the bell rung on two thought to be capable of winning it all: Oliver Halkett for “Faesulae” and Zwe Spacetime for “vaesite,” words with tricky combinations of origins and vowel sounds.

Oliver and Zwe are eighth-graders, which means they have now aged out of the competition. “When it comes to competition, he goes all the way,” said his father, Guarav Parikh.

The competitors stood next to each other as Scripps officials announced what everyone in a lively crowd at Constitution Hall already knew, and Shrey turned and shook Ishaan’s hand.After Sarv Dharavane bowed out in third place for the second consecutive year, Shrey and Ishaan had only one conventional round before the buzzer for the spell-off was placed on the stage. Ishaan was escorted away — the tiebreaker is the only time spellers get the same words — and Shrey had a last bout with nerves as he stood there for five minutes while crews tried, and failed, to fix a technical glitch with the buzzer.“That was really, like, scary for me,” he said.The spell-off moves so fast that it’s impossible to tell which word secures the title, but Scripps later announced that “bromocriptine” — a polypeptide alkaloid that mimics the activity of dopamine — was the winner. Shrey could get a dopamine hit from the winner’s haul of $52,500 in cash, a custom trophy and a package of prizes.He becomes the 31st of the past 37 champions with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/spelling-bee-indian-americans-immigration-b14ba87533dfcd8af813de568ee5958f">Indian heritage</a>, a run that began with Nupur Lala’s victory in 1999.<h2>Bouncing back from a school bee stunner</h2>A 14-year-old from Rancho Cucamonga, California, Shrey took an unusual route to the title. He finished third in 2024, but last year he was absent. He missed his regional bee, too — because, woozy from a virus that caused a fever, he blanked on the word “calipers” and bowed out of a competition that any speller of his talent would consider child’s play: the spelling bee at Day Creek Intermediate School.“Right now I’m probably the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m just so happy and relieved, and just such a flood of emotions,” Shrey said. “At my school bee last year, I was really dejected and just very upset. It didn’t even sink in until the next day. I had a really tough time, but I’m glad I was able to bounce back.”After a few months off, he rededicated himself, seeking every edge he could find through coaching and study guides. In online bees against many of the same spellers he faced this week in Washington, he won again and again.“Whenever I would quiz him, he would take notice of his missed words. He’d analyze every missed word he had, try to figure out why he missed it,” said Sohum Sukhatankar, a co-champion in 2019 who coached Shrey along with Sam Evans and Vijaya Ganesh. “All the time I coached him, he’d never miss a word twice.”Evans, who has worked with each of the past three champions, said Shrey’s work ethic stood out.“I’ve really never seen someone put this much effort into spelling bees, into learning everything that he possibly can,” Evans said. “Shrey is relentless.”<h2>A high-quality final comes to an abrupt end</h2>The spell-off will never be popular among bee purists who prefer to see the final two contestants go head-to-head for as many rounds as it takes. Because it emphasizes speed and memorization, it lacks the intrigue of watching a speller work out the intricacies of a tricky word with odd vowel patterns or sneaky double consonants.“It’s a perversion of many values that I and many in the spelling community hold dear,” said Navneeth Murali, who competed through 2020 and now coaches. “I think everyone would have liked to see a duel, but it looks like the spell-off is here to stay. It’s something that we’ll have to adapt to.”A stout, experienced group of nine finalists showed off their skills by going 18 for 18 at the start, breezing through the first spelling and vocabulary rounds. Aiden Meng ended that streak when he was tripped up by “catometope” to start the second spelling round.Then the crowd gasped when the bell rung on two thought to be capable of winning it all: Oliver Halkett for “Faesulae” and Zwe Spacetime for “vaesite,” words with tricky combinations of origins and vowel sounds.Oliver and Zwe are eighth-graders, which means they have now aged out of the competition.
