Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Quotes

OPENING STATEMENT: âAlright, as far as the injuries go, (G) Trey (Smith) didnât practice but improving. (CB) LâJarius (Sneed) didnât practice, and (LB) Drue (Tranquill) didnât practice. Weâre all improving as we go. (WR) Cyrus (Allen) got some good work in today, (LB Jeffrey) Bassa is back out there, did good. (CB Mansoor) Delane did up through seven-on-seven, did a nice job with that. Actually, had the pads on. And then (WR Rashee) Rice took most of the practice so, with that, good work today. A lot of red zone work today. Short field. But again, things are a little faster in that area, and I thought the guys competed against each other, and it was good competition. We worked a lot of third downs in the red zone, which will help us down the road too. Good to have (Offensive Coordinator Eric) EB (Bieniemy) back, so heâs back in the fold, and I donât think he missed a step, man. He was out there getting after it. So thatâs a positive for the offensive side. With that, time is yours.â
Q: Did you expect to have (Offensive Coordinator Eric) EB (Bieniemy) back this quickly?
REID: âListen, Iâve talked to him, I talk to him several times a day, so I knew he was coming back if everything worked out the way it had been. The primary thing is that (Wife of Offensive Coordinator) Mia (Bieniemy) is stable and in good hands and that sheâs doing well. So that was the primary thing with it and thatâs where we settled.â
Q: With some receivers out during the last week or so, WR Jalen Royals got some more reps. What did you see from him?
REID: âYeah listen, (WR Jalen Royals) heâs getting better every day, faster, playing faster every day, which is important. Got some nice catches today, so weâve just got to keep going. Got to stack the days. Itâs not what you did today, if you did well today then youâve got to do well tomorrow. So, you canât drop back off. Thatâs the challenge.â
Q: Is (G) Treyâs (Smith) injury something that is short term?
REID: âYes, yeah.â
Q: What are you wanting to learn with (T) Kahlil (Benson) at right guard?
REID: âYeah, I think itâs good for him to be able to have some flex in there, flexibility to do both. We worked him a little bit in there, in OTAs, liked what we saw. So, this gives them real competition in there now. (Defensive Coordinator Steve) Spags (Spagnuolo) is throwing a lot of different things at you, so youâve got to be able to adjust. Itâll do nothing but help him, even at the tackle spot, itâll help him, once he jumps back there.â
Q: Is knowing that QB Patrick Mahomes wonât be here forever, something youâre conscious of in the back of your mind?
REID: âI donât worry about it because (QB Patrick Mahomes) heâll be here a lot longer than I am. And you, Vahe (Gregorian) (laughter).â
Q: When you think about what you appreciate about QB Patrick Mahomes, what comes to mind?
REID: âYeah, listen, (QB Patrick Mahomes) he is all in. I mean, that covers everything. Heâs all in, every day and I love that part of him.â
Q: How important is this preseason in terms of TE Jared Wiley and TE Jake Briningstool in terms of what they can provide you in terms of depth at the tight end spot?
REID: âYeah, youâre seeing the challenge between the two of (TE Jared Wiley and TE Jake Briningstool) them. I mean, theyâre competing, as that whole group is. I mean (TE) Treâs (Watson) right in the mix there too. So, itâs a good group of young guys. Big strong guys, and Briningstoolâs whole thing was could he stay on the field? And heâs been doing that.â
Q: Did you notice any kind of boost having Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy back out there today amongst the guys?
REID: âYeah, it was great to have (Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy) him back out there. Everybody was glad to see him. I think once you start going, youâre going. Itâs a bit like a game. Once youâre in the game, youâre in the game. But he always brings good energy.â
Q: On TE Travis Kelce being all in and what it means for him to practice on the veteran day off.
REID: âYeah, youâve got to pull (TE) Travis (Kelce) as opposed to, heâll stay out every play. And so, we have a rotation for him and if he hears the next play, and itâs one he kind of likes, youâve got to like fight him to get him off (the field). I love that part of him, and itâs great for the young guys. Thatâs the best part. He shares that energy with them, heâs not afraid to get on guys and challenge them, and then he walks his part of it.â
Q: Is there any challenge to playing two teams in the preseason that youâll see in the regular season?
REID: âListen, theyâre not going to play anybody, and weâll be very vanilla, too. Thatâs just kind of how it is. Itâs an opportunity to see your young guys play, and Seattle will probably do the same thing. I donât know how many guys theyâll play. But itâs all good work. I donât worry about all the other stuff, I mean youâre not really game planning for these things. Youâre just taking base plays and going and running them.â

LB NICK BOLTON
Q: How is this camp going for you and the defense as a whole?
BOLTON: âYeah, I think every day weâre making strides. Being the team we want to be, obviously, Xâs and Oâs wise, but just the mental part, the conditioning, concentration during long periods, long practices, long drive drills and stuff like that. So, I think weâre doing a good job coming together so far.â
Q: Offense and defense were both working a lot in the red zone. Whatâs the process like with working on red zone for the defense?
BOLTON: âObviously, we are getting down to the red zone, especially on third down when weâve got the field, four-point plays and stuff like that. I think last year couldâve been a little bit better in that category. So, I think we did a good job so far in camp, making sure we got off the field on third downs and keeping those four-points for our offense.â
Q: Being in your sixth training camp is there anything that you continue to learn as you step into a more veteran presence on the team?
BOLTON: âEvery year is a little bit different. This year I had a little bit more time in the offseason, kind of work on my body. More so now itâs just communication wise, making sure everybodyâs on the same page, obviously I did that before. Iâm trying to take it to a different level, making sure that everybodyâs speaking the same language. Every signal is the same, so there is no confusion in the back end and stuff like that. So, Iâm working some more on Xâs and Oâs, in terms of my position and how I can help other people around me.â
TE JAKE BRININGSTOOL
Q: After being injured last year and watching camp, what are you applying this season?
BRININGSTOOL: âYeah, I feel like last year for me, as frustrating as it was, I think it was a way God showed me just to be able to take a step back and do what it takes to be a pro. I think just being able to take a back seat and watch the guys in front of me and be able to just watch how they attack every single day, the stuff that they do off the field and how it translates onto the field. So, I think I really had an up-close view to be able to see that, and I can be able to translate that into my own way and use it for myself.â
Q: Which TE around the league do you watch to learn things from?
BRININGSTOOL: â(TE) Travis Kelce, just being able to be so close to him, the Hall of Fame career that heâs had, itâs been a blessing for me to watch him, study him, and just be able to play alongside him.â
Q: Weâre a week away from putting on the jersey in an NFL game. What do you want to showcase throughout this preseason?
BRININGSTOOL: âYeah, I think the biggest thing, weâve had a super competitive camp, guys have been working hard, I think we have a talented team, so weâre just excited to go out there and showcase what weâve been working on. Iâm looking forward to it, and I know all the other guys are too. Weâre excited for Saturday.â
OL KINGSLEY SUAMATAIA
Q: On his chemistry with T Josh Simmons.
SUAMATAIA: â(T) Josh (Simmons) has come a long way. Heâs out there grinding each and every day. Itâs to the point where we can just point out there, and he sees what Iâm seeing, and Iâm seeing what heâs seeing. We are ready to roll.â
Q: How tough is it going against DL Peter Woods?
SUAMATAIA: âOh, man. (DL) Peter (Woods) is a dog. He has a high motor, very strong. But heâs very twitchy for his size, so you have to be able to be square with him. Huge bright side for him. So, heâs doing great.â
Q: How would you say you have changed since your first year in the league, both on and off the field?
