MANHATTAN - Forty-three students from seven schools in Kansas have been awarded the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Kansas Agriculture Skills and Competencies Certificate. High schools with students earning certificates include Buhler, Cheney, Ellsworth, Holton, Lyons, Mission Valley and Republic County.

Students have completed requirements in the areas of classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experience (SAE) and FFA. They have demonstrated excellence in agricultural knowledge, career readiness, and leadership development. Students must also maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in all school courses to earn the certification.

“Students earning the Ag Skills and Competencies Certificate have truly taken steps to set themselves apart from their peers. The certificate completers will be some of the most well-rounded high school students, not only in the agriculture discipline, but among Kansas graduates across all areas of the state in the class of 2025. The career skills, hands-on experiences and technical knowledge gained from their four years in agricultural education — these future leaders have put many tools in their toolbox that will serve them well for a lifetime,” said Jason Larison, the agricultural education teacher at Holton High School.

“As agriculture evolves with advancing technologies and practices, the demand for a skilled and knowledgeable workforce has never been greater,” said Suzanne Ryan-Numrich, KDA marketing director. “These students represent the future of Kansas agriculture — equipped with the training, experience, and leadership qualities needed to thrive in a modern, competitive industry. We celebrate their accomplishments and look forward to the contributions they will make to our state’s agricultural success.”

For over 10 years, the certificate has been endorsed by industry organizations and employers. Applications for the Kansas Agriculture Skills and Competencies Certificate are accepted each spring.

This is day 2 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest was off to a rapid start in southwest Kansas on Thursday with temperatures topping out about 100 degrees. There will be more information available on how yields and quality will compare to average by the beginning of next week when reports start to come in.

In central Kansas, harvest came to a halt after Tuesday’s rainfall but will pick back up by the weekend with high winds and nearly triple digit temperatures in the forecast.

Derek Sawyer who farms in McPherson County reports that before Tuesday’s rain they were cutting wheat that was yielding 80 bushels per acre. But Tuesday brought the area 5 to 6 inches of rain, up to 10 inches in some places, and 80 mile per hour sustained winds. This took kernels out of the heads in many wheat fields. He estimates that they probably lost 25% of the yield potential. Test weights were good, but will no doubt decrease with the rain. Some fields are in standing water and may not be able to be harvested. While he should be over halfway done with harvest, Sawyer reports that he barely even got started, and won’t be able to get into even the fields with the least amount of rainfall until the weekend at the earliest. The creek is out of its banks and roads are flooded in the area.

Lee Scheufler who farms in Rice and Ellsworth counties reports that harvest began on June 10 and that yields were average up to 20 percent above average. They’ve had a couple rain delays, including Tuesday’s rainfall which ranged from 1.75 to 4 inches in the area, with localized flooding. He was able to find dry ground on Thursday and get back to harvest before the weekend. After the rains, test weight has decreased slightly but is still around average. He is only about 15 to 20 percent of the way done with harvest and has at least a week left.

With Mental Health Awareness Month coming to a close, Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) in Salina is shedding light on the importance of mental health.

Though the month of May is known as "Mental Health Awareness," CKMHC hopes to make the topic of mental health something that everyone can take seriously not just for May, but for the rest of their lives.

"We want to normalize mental health and treat it as equally important as physical health," said CKMHC Chief Development Officer, Jennifer Kaufman.

Over the years, people have experienced struggles mentally and may not be aware of the resources that are available to solve those issues. According to CKMHC people who are not exposed to mental health resources, not aware of the resources or may not want to receive any help for whatever reason, can negatively affect their behavior, relationships, jobs, physical health, decisions/choices and much more.

"We have a systemic problem that makes mental health not as important as it really is and we just want people to know that we are here to help," said CKMHC Crisis Director, Esther Kency.

According to non-profit organization First H.E.L.P, there have been a total of 979 first responder-related deaths by suicide across the country, from the years of 2020-2025. These totals add up for both active and retired first responders.

Since 2019, there has been a total of 28 first responder suicides in Kansas.

"First responders, especially Firefighters and EMS struggle the most with mental health issues and we want to make people aware of this matter," said Kency.

CKMHC assists law enforcement officers with Crisis Intervention (CIT) classes, which are meant to help improve interactions between law enforcement and persons with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders and prevent the inappropriate restraint, incarceration and stigmatization of these individuals. CIT Officers lead these classes by informing policemen who may come in contact with people with mental illnesses, to recognize the signs/symptoms of these illnesses and to respond effectively and appropriately to individuals in crisis.

People wanting to be more informed about mental health or even wish to pursue a career in mental health can do so by participating in Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA). CKMHC offers these type of MHFA classes as well, yet the last class was on May 9th of this year. However, you can still call CKMHC at (785) 823-6322 for the next available class.

Salina PostWith Mental Health Awareness Month coming to a close, Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) in Salina is shedding light on the importance of mental health.Though the month of May is known as "Mental Health Awareness," CKMHC hopes to make the topic of mental health something that everyone can take seriously not just for May, but for the rest of their lives. "We want to normalize mental health and treat it as equally important as physical health," said CKMHC Chief Development Officer, Jennifer Kaufman.Over the years, people have experienced struggles mentally and may not be aware of the resources that are available to solve those issues.
First Responders and Mental Health
According to non-profit organization First H.E.L.P, there have been a total of 979 first responder-related deaths by suicide across the country, from the years of 2020-2025. These totals add up for both active and retired first responders. Since 2019, there has been a total of 28 first responder suicides in Kansas. "First responders, especially Firefighters and EMS struggle the most with mental health issues and we want to make people aware of this matter," said Kency.Saline County Lt. CKMHC sheds light on the importance of mental health

Alice Jo Macek, of Wilson, KS, passed away on May 23, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Society-Ellsworth Village in Ellsworth, KS, at the age of 85.

Alice was born on the family home west of Holyrood on June 8, 1939, to Josie (Brejcha) and Frank W. Doubrava Jr., the youngest of six children. Her father passed away when she was three, and both grandfathers shortly after, leaving a significant void. Her mother, Josie, remained on the farm and raised the children on her own.

Alice attended Murray Hill Country School for one year and then went to Holyrood, where she graduated from Holyrood High School in 1957. During her senior year, she met Joseph Macek Jr. through a mutual friend, and the two were married on January 25, 1958, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Ellsworth. The young couple made their home in Wilson, where Joe was involved in the John Deere Implement business, and together they raised two children, Jerry and Ramona.

Alice was active in the community and a devoted member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic church, its Altar Society and St. Francis Circle Daughters of Isabella, where she served in numerous roles, including Past Regent. Her service extended to the USD 328 School Board and past board member of Smoky Hills Community Foundation. A proud 60+ year member of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs, she served as Sixth District President from 1986-88, when Wilson had two clubs: Friends of Reading and Sorosis. She was also involved in Mother’s Club, sewing club, current member of the GFWC Rainbow Club, Wilson American Legion Auxiliary and Kansas Czechs Inc.

For many years Alice and Joe enjoyed playing in a couple’s pitch card club. Joe passed away on November 3, 2002, following a short illness. Later, Alice and long-time friend Gene Malir began attending social events together, never imagining their relationship would lead to a permanent one. They were married on September 10, 2004, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Wilson. After their marriage, she moved to the farm in Noble Township returning to her roots as a farm gal, where she continued to reside. She and Gene enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends, with several trips outside the United States, and rejoining the couple’s pitch card club where they enjoyed many fun evenings. The Wilson Senior Center was also a special place where she enjoyed good food, companionship, and new friendships over the years.

Throughout her life, Alice worked for several local businesses including The Wilson World, Kenny’s Construction, Wilson High School, LaBelle Boutique, and Bethphage in Ellsworth. After leaving Bethphage, she served as a guardian for the State of Kansas for her ward, Matthew.

Alice enjoyed gardening, sewing, dancing, cooking and baking - especially kolaches - spending time with family and friends and serving her community. Proud of her Czech heritage, she contributed to the Annual After Harvest Czech Festival for many years, serving as Parade Chairman.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; brother, Alfred Doubrava; sisters and husbands, LouElla (Ken) Thompson, Delores (William) Hinde, and Irene

(Clifford) Urbanek; sisters-in-law, Bernadine (Gail) Bachman, Joan Malir and Marilyn Mattas.

Survivors include son, Jerry (Sandy) Macek of Wilson; daughter, Ramona (Kathy Osborne) Macek of Topeka; sister, Rose (Bob) Small of Lyons; grandchildren, Joe Macek, Amber (Corry) Kepka, Joshua (Laura) Pekar, Courtney (Ryan) Smith; eight great-grandchildren; step-son, Rick (Bonnie Coley) Malir of Dublin, Ohio; step-daughter, Nancy Malir, Alexandria Virginia; brothers-in-law, Ken Malir and Rich Mattas; special friend and helper, Michael Macek; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and her beloved Nike.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 10:30AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery in Wilson. Visitation will be on Tuesday, 5PM until 8PM with the family receiving friends 6PM until the Vigil and Rosary Service at 7PM at the funeral home in Wilson.

Memorials are suggested to Wilson Senior Center, Ellsworth County Cancer Fund, Good Samaritan Society-Ellsworth Village, and Gentiva Hospice McPherson and may be sent to Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, PO Box 533, Wilson, KS 67490.

The Southeast of Saline baseball team completed their third league sweep of the season on Tuesday, defending their new home turf from the Ellsworth Bearcats.

Game One: SE of Saline 3, Ellsworth 1

The opener was a pitchers' duel from start to finish, with Ellsworth scratching across their lone run in the top of the first before being silenced for the final six innings.

SES meanwhile, managed to plate a run in the second, another in the third, and one more in the sixth to secure a critical, late-season victory.

While both teams managed five hits in this game, Southeast made more of their opportunities, with Lyrik Lilley driving in the lone RBI of the day for the Trojans.

On the hill, Killian Vaughan and Lyrik Lilley combined to prevent a single earned run from coming across, allowing just five hits and striking out seven in the win.

Game Two: SE of Saline 12, Ellsworth 2

The nightcap saw more of the same, with Ellsworth’s early 1-0 lead quickly erased by a two-run first for Southeast.

This time, the Bearcats would tie it up in the top of the third, but two Trojan runs in the fourth and an eight-run outburst in the sixth would put the game, and the series, to bed early.

SES looked much more confident at the plate this time around, with Grady Gebhardt, Sam Knopf, and Landon Albrecht all recording multi-hit games, and Knopf driving in 4 of the 11 runs himself.

On the bump, Kayson Bertrand was spectacular, allowing just one earned run on four hits, walking two, and striking out two in a complete-game effort.

With this win, the Trojans are now 12-6 overall and 7-1 in league play, while Ellsworth slides to 7-12 and 3-5 respectively.

SES could still steal the NCAA title out from under Sacred Heart (10-2) if they can win their final four league games against Lyons and Beloit.

⚾️ Southeast sweeps Ellsworth to stay in the hunt

The Southeast of Saline softball team took one more step toward another consecutive league title on Tuesday as they swept the Ellsworth Lady Bearcats in Gypsum.

Game One: SE of Saline 5, Ellsworth 1

Southeast of Saline would actually be outhit in both games of this doubleheader, but solid pitching and aggressive baserunning would win the day for the Lady Trojans.

Despite collecting just three hits, SES would strike for a run in the first, three in the second, and one more in the sixth, muting the Bearcat bats for the final six innings of play.

That good work in the circle was done by Carlee Dye, whose lone run allowed was not earned, and who struck out two alongside a zero-walk outing.

Ashley Whelchel had two of Southeast’s three RBIs on the day, a critical performance in a slow outing for the offense.

Game Two: SE of Saline 11, Ellsworth 3

Fortunately for the Lady Trojans, the bats came alive in the nightcap, plating two runs in the first, one in the second and third, four in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one more in the sixth.

Ellsworth managed a run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, but it was too little, too late as Southeast secured the sweep.

At the plate, Abby Wyatt was the only bat to record a multi-hit day as the Lady Bearcats actually outhit SES 9-7, but when it mattered most, the Southeast staff knuckled down and stranded critical runners.

Karlee Zurfluh, Hannah Thiel, and Riley Donnelly combined to toss seven innings, allowing just two earned runs on nine hits, striking out nine and walking just two.

With this win, Southeast remains on the path to a league title at 17-3 overall and 6-0 in league play while Ellsworth falls to 0-10 in the NCAA.

Each panel selects six semifinalists - three elementary teachers and three secondary teachers. From those semifinalists, the panel in each region then selects one elementary finalist and one secondary finalist. The Kansas Teacher of the Year is selected from among the state’s eight regional finalists.

The mission of the KTOY program is to build and utilize a network of exemplary teachers who are leaders in the improvement of schools, student performance and the teaching profession.

Members of the Kansas Teacher of the Year team, comprised of the Teacher of the Year and regional finalists, serve as ambassadors for education in Kansas, making public appearances across the state to promote education and the teaching profession.

The individual selected as the Kansas Teacher of the Year is eligible for selection as the National Teacher of the Year.

North Central Regional Planning Commission announces Rural Voices Youth Contest winners

Despite the tornado warnings, there was no major damage from storms that moved through Saline County late Tuesday and early Wednesday, according Saline County Public information officer Melissa McCoy.

Residents in many areas of Saline County reported hail and wind gusts over 60 mph. At 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service in Wichita issued a tornado warning for southwestern Saline County, northwestern McPherson County and southeastern Ellsworth County

A strong storm system moved through Saline County Tuesday night, bringing localized flooding, hail, and isolated tree damage. Fortunately, no tornadoes touched down within the county, though the potential for significant damage was present.

“We got lucky last night, but severe weather season is just ramping up,” said Michelle Weis, Emergency Management Director. “If a tornado had touched ground along the cell path, it would have been catastrophic.”

Saline County received approximately 15 minutes' notice before the storm cell was set to arrive in the area, allowing emergency management to activate the outdoor warning sirens early. It's important to note that outdoor warning sirens are intended to alert people who are outdoors with limited access to other information sources. During severe weather, residents must have multiple ways to receive timely warnings, including weather radios, local news, internet resources, and phone apps.
