The 37th Spring Poetry Series continues on Tuesday with an online
reading by poet and author Harley Elliott. 

The reading, sponsored by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday via Zoom web-based video conferencing. To sign up for the reading, visit Salina

Elliott, a well-known Salina artist
and writer, will read from two books published in 2020, The Mercy of Distance: New and Selected Poems and Creature Way, as well as from an earlier
book, The Monkey of Mulberry Pass.

“Motivation
is simply a matter of if something comes to you, you need to get it down, or it
will nag at you,” Elliott says, about his writing process. “I don’t like to
write poetry with a predetermined idea in my mind.”

A reading by poet and series founder Patricia Traxler will
complete the series on April 27 via Zoom. 

A lifelong student of the arts, Elliott received a B.A. from Kansas Wesleyan University in art and English, and an M.A. in painting from Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.

Early in his career, Elliott was as a book designer at Syracuse University Press and later went on to teach art as an assistant professor at Marymount College in Salina for 13 years. After his Marymount years, Elliott served as the education coordinator at the Salina Art Center for more than a decade.

Today, he is an established
Kansas visual artist and the author of 11 poetry titles, a children’s book, The
Tiger’s Spots, and a memoir, Loading the Stone.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Nathan had a collection of vintage Chevy vehicles and had the ability to fix anything or create anything. If someone had an idea, Nathan could make it. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. He is survived by his loving wife Mary of the home, daughters Ashley Montgomery of Salina, Isabella Montgomery of the home, son Alex Montgomery of Salina, brother David A. Montgomery of Abilene, four grandchildren and two on the way, along with many relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents. A parish rosary will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene. Mass of Christian burial for Nathan will follow the rosary at 10:00 a.m. with Father Don Zimmerman as celebrant. His final resting place will be in the Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery near Abilene. Barbara Marie Culver, 70, of La Cygne, KS passed away peacefully on April 14, 2021.&nbsp; She was born on September 30, 1950 in Salina, Ks. to Walter H. and Rhoda (McMickle) Neumann. Barbara graduated from Salina High School in 1968.&nbsp; She worked for Schwan’s Pizza for many years as well as USPS.&nbsp; In her spare time, she loved to watch the KC Chiefs, read books and put puzzles together.&nbsp; Most of all she was the best mother and grandmother.

Barbara married Hideaki (George) Dalme on December 27, 1973. To this union two children were born.&nbsp; She married Curtis Culver and they later divorced.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Walter H. and Rhoda Neumann and sister, Catherine Eshelman.

She is survived by her children, Stacey (Ryan) Fromdahl of La Cygne, Ks. and Craig (Rosalie) Dalme of Salina; sister Leslie (Stan) Lauer of Salina, and brother-in-law; John Rex Eshelman of Las Vegas, Nevada; her beloved grandchildren, Brianne (Zach) Whitley, Charlotte, NC; Ashley Feldmann, Emporia; Veronika Fromdahl, an ABH on the USS Carl Vinson; Riley Fromdahl an AC at Pax River, MD; Roman and Ambrose Dalme, Salina and her special cat, Toni.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 19 at Ryan Mortuary, 137 North Eighth St., Salina. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 20 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Salina. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after an arrest.

On April 14, a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a 2001 Ford Taurus in the 13000 block of 142nd Road for an alleged vehicle registration violation, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Further investigation into the traffic stop led to the discovery of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. 

Deputies arrested the passenger, Joshua Alan Shughart, 33, of Holton, and booked him into the Jackson County Jail on a requested charge of possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, according to Morse.

Sheriff: Kan. man man had drugs during traffic stop

MANHATTAN —Fire on May 22, 2018 caused significant damage to Hale Library on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan. The university celebrated with a virtual&nbsp; grand reopening Thursday evening.

Chair of the University Library Committee, Amy Rosine, said to save the building several hundred thousand gallons of water flooded the building. "While the fire was contained to the roof smoke and water caused damage throughout the building. All of the books needed to be removed and cleaned, and about 85% of the library was in dire need of renovation and repair."

KSU Libraries administrators launched a recovery process immediately. "Soaked books were&nbsp; frozen in an effort to further stop damage and prevent mold growth. " Rosine added that "damaged ceilings and carpet were removed, walls demolished and library services were relocated and made operational. " Library personnel worked from different locations on campus.

K-State libraries and the KSU Foundation launched a campaign that resulted in more than $330,000 for Help for Hale. The support was considered important for the reimaging during Innovation and Inspiration, the $1.4 billion campaign for K-State. Major gift donors provided support to help the library.

The renovated first floor of the library opened on Jan. 25 of this year and the remaining floors on Feb. 15. Improvements range from a new first floor entrance, many spaces to collaborate, quiet study spaces, the Great Room restoration, new technology including digital media production, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence to meet needs of students for the future. There is also a cafe that offers snacks plus&nbsp; a new meditation space and wash basin, a children's area and a location for multicultural and community studies. There are two new reading rooms with natural light in the historic Farrell Library&nbsp;

Today in History -- April 16

LEAVENWORTH—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting that left a child dead and have three suspects in custody.

Just before 7p.m. Wednesday, police received a report of shots fired near the KARE Pharmacy, 2500 South 4th Street in Leavenworth, according to&nbsp; Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens.

At the scene, police learned that a suspect in the pharmacy parking lot fired multiple shots at a black Volkswagen Jetta.

One shot struck a northbound 4-door sedan driven by a 30-year-old woman and her 6-month-old daughter. The suspect left the scene in a white Dodge Charger, according to Kitchens.

While investigating the scene, Kansas City police informed authorities in Leavenworth that a shooting victim arrived at Children's Mercy Hospital in a black Volkswagen Jetta. Doctors at the hospital pronounced the 12-year-old shooting victim dead.

Investigators located three suspects at a home in the 200 Block of South 12th Street in Leavenworth. Officers arrested a 25-year-old man, a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy, according to Kitchens.&nbsp; The man was booked in the Leavenworth County jail and the teens are being held in juvenile detention.&nbsp;

Police are working to determine what led to the shooting. They released no additional details on Thursday afternoon.

Police: 12-year-old fatally shot in Leavenworth

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman shot by police after she allegedly pointed a gun at officers made her first court appearance in the case Tuesday, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Jennifer Miller, 34 of Wichita, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer.

On March 31, two police officers were proactively checking the Red Roof Inn, 7335 East Kellogg and Sky Palace, 7321 East Kellogg after numerous calls and complaints over several months involving assaults, burglaries, drugs, stolen cars, underage parties and other things that would constitute a nuisance to the neighborhood and the businesses.

While checking the businesses, the officers saw a stolen Subaru Legacy behind the Red Roof Inn. The car had been reported stolen on March 30. As officers approached the car, they saw Miller enter the car's trunk, grab items and walk toward her room at the Sky Palace.

One officer approached Miller. A second officer arrived to assist and asked Miller for identification. Miller reached into her purse, pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at both officers, according to Wichita Police Captain Stephens.

One officer pulled his handgun and fired one shot striking Miller in the neck. The officers began life saving measures and called EMS.&nbsp; She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp;

She was released from the hospital April 9 and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.

Her next court appearance is April 28. She remains jailed on a $100,000 bond.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman shot by police in Wichita was released from the hospital and is <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=123228">now in jail.</a>

Deputies booked <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=123228">35-year-old Jennifer Miller</a> into the Sedgwick County Jail just after 7p.m. Friday, according to <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=123228">online jail records.</a>

Miller is being held on requested charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of stolen property, auto theft and felon in possession of a firearm, according to Stephens.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an officer shooting and have identified the suspect as 35-year-old Jennifer Miller of Wichita, according to Police Captain Jason Stephens.

Just before 9a.m. Wednesday, two police officers were proactively checking the Red Roof Inn, 7335 East Kellogg and Sky Palace, 7321 East Kellogg after numerous calls and complaints over several months involving assaults, burglaries, drugs, stolen cars, underage parties and other things that would constitute a nuisance to the neighborhood and the businesses.

While checking the businesses, the officers saw a stolen Subaru Legacy behind the Red Roof Inn. The car had been reported stolen on Tuesday. As they approached the car, they saw Miller enter the car's trunk, grab items and walk toward her room at the Sky Palace.

One officer approached Miller. A second officer arrived to assist and asked Miller for identification. Miller reached into her purse, pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at both officers, according to Stephens.

When she is released from the hospital in a couple of days she will be booked on requested charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of stolen property, auto theft and felon in possession of a firearm, according to Stephens.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating the cause of a Kansas house fire have made an arrest.

Just after 8:30a.m. Wednesday, firefighters responded to the fire in a home at 229 SW Western Avenue in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke coming from the single story residence.&nbsp;Three occupants were able to escape prior to the fire departments arrival.

A preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be intentionally set.&nbsp; Authorities arrested 30-year old Austen Burris and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a requested charge of Aggravated Arson.

The estimated dollar loss – $1,000.00; all of which is associated with structural loss. Working smoke detectors were not located within the structure of fire origin

Man accused of setting fire at Kansas home

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A former Kansas police chief accused of stalking and violating a protective order was convicted Wednesday morning in Reno County District Court.

In April of 2019, former Bushton Police Chief Brian Treaster was booked into Reno County Correctional Facility in connection with a stalking incident. In June of 2019 he was charged with battery of the same victim.

After a two-day trial, a jury deliberated just 90 minutes before finding Treaster guilty of felony stalking, felony criminal threat, misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor violation of a PFA. His sentencing is set for June 4.

Jury: Former Kan. police chief guilty of felony stalking

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Sedgwick County sherif's deputy for alleged domestic violence.

On Tuesday, police arrested 31-year-old Tyler Brooks on requested charges of Aggravated Domestic Battery, Domestic Battery, Criminal Threat and Domestic Violence Criminal Damage to Property, according to a Lt. Benjamin Blick.&nbsp; He was booked into jail just before 2:30a.m. Wednesday, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

The requested charges stem from an incident involving an intimate partner of the deputy with whom he shares a residence.

&nbsp;Deputy Brooks has been employed by the Sheriff’s Office for 8 years.

In addition to the criminal case, the Professional Standards Unit of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an investigation.

Following the arrest, Deputy Brooks was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigation, according to Blick. His initial bond was $25,000.

Benjamin Blick.&nbsp; He was booked into jail just before 2:30a.m. Wednesday, according to online jail records.&nbsp;The requested charges stem from an incident involving an intimate partner of the deputy with whom he shares a residence.&nbsp;Deputy Brooks has been employed by the Sheriff’s Office for 8 years.In addition to the criminal case, the Professional Standards Unit of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an investigation.Following the arrest, Deputy Brooks was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigation, according to Blick. His initial bond was $25,000.

On April 12, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Task Force,&nbsp;conducted a joint investigation. The Drug Enforcement Task Force received credible information that a large quantity of methamphetamine was being distributed. 

Officers arrested two individuals in the 2900 block of SE Adams Street in Topeka.

Patricia Hernandez-Lopez, 22, and Ebonie Dominique McKinzie, 37, both of Topeka, were booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of&nbsp;&nbsp;possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Joleen K. Baxa was born on March 11, 1950, in Belleville, the daughter of Vernon &amp; Melva (Kopsa) Havel. Joleen grew up in Cuba, and graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1968. Following high school, Joleen attended Emporia State University.

Joleen married Terence L. Baxa on November 6, 1975, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Joleen was working for the National Guard in Topeka while she was dating Terry, and decided that the commute from Topeka to Cuba was too long, so Joleen relocated to Salina, and started her career with the U.S. Postal Service. Joleen rose steadily through the ranks of the postal services, working in many locations, and retiring as a district manager. Following her retirement, Terry and Joleen relocated to Belleville, and Joleen started working for Netflix, central division.

During her free time, Joleen enjoyed spending time with her many friends, gardening, cooking, and loving her four-legged daughter, Lily Jo.

Joleen passed away peacefully on December 3, 2020, at the Republic County Hospital in Belleville, at the age of 70 years, 8 months and 22 days.

She was preceded in death by her father Vernon, step-father Jack Parrack, and sister Linda Allday.

She will be forever remembered by her husband of 45 years, Terry, her sister Peggy Humpert and her husband Lyle of Tescott, Kansas, brother-in-law Barry Baxa and his wife Rita of Cuba, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Cremation services were chosen, with a memorial service to be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. at the Cuba Presbyterian Church.

Friends may sign Joleen's book at the funeral home on Thursday, April 15, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and on Friday, April 16, from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. The family will be greeting friends Friday evening from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Memorials are requested to the Alzheimer’s Association, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
