SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities continue their effort to prevent prostitution in portions of Wichita and made more arrests this week.

On Wednesday, officers from North Community Policing, North Community Response Team, Vice, and the Broadway Corridor Team conducted a special assignment focused on individuals attempting to purchase sexual relations on North Broadway in Wichita, according to a media release from police.

 The special assignment resulted in 16 individuals being arrested for various sex trafficking charges including those pictured, according to the Sedgwick County booking report.

A total of 22 sex trafficking special assignments have been conducted in the Broadway corridor over the last four years and 201 individuals have been arrested for various sex trafficking charges during these assignments, according to Wichita police.

Hillsboro - Alma Schlehuber, 86, passed away November 10, 2021 in Wichita. She was born December 6, 1934 to Samuel and Leah (Winter) Laubhan in Hillsboro. She married Allen Schlehuber January 18, 1952 in Durham. 

Survivors include: husband Allen Schlehuber of rural Hillsboro; son Merle (Marolyn) Schlehuber, rural Hillsboro; granddaughter Maci (Taylor) Ellison of Wichita; sister Lorraine Shumaker of Shreveport, Louisiana; sister-in-law Julie Schlehuber Werdann. 

Funeral service 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro officiated by Pastor John Werner. Graveside service 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Mom whole heartedly believed in the old adage, “if you’re not early, you’re late.” This especially applied to her dinner table. If you were not in place at 11:30 you better have had a very good excuse. Mom fed and watered us all every day. Dinner, lunch in the fields and sometimes supper late at night. Many times, Dad would be doing business with someone in the yard when lunch time came around. Rather than being late he would invite them in as everyone was always welcome at her table. I cannot remember a time not getting enough to eat or one single bad meal. Mom was a magician with a cast iron skillet. Mom kept her house immaculate. She was taught early on that there were many reasons to be poor but no good reason to not take care of what you did have. This was an exceptional chore with all of us traipsing through her house. In addition to providing for us during work days she also would have an open spread for all of our hunting buddies. Sometimes during pheasant season, she would prepare food for as many as twenty people. She loved it, so did we, so did they. When I got old enough to start helping out more Mom went from an equipment operator to taxi driver. She would haul us around from field to field as we moved machinery. Mom has also always taken care of the book work tasks. Just like with her philosophy on being late, if she didn’t have the bill paid the next day after receiving it, she felt that it was already overdue. Mom was a prolific letter writer. She always had stationary by her chair with letters started to her sister Lorraine, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Mom was the keeper of both sides of the family. She kept track of new births, birthdays, graduations and all other special events and happenings and reported to us. She would most likely know every one of your names if she were here today with us, which she is in spirit, but she cannot whisper names to us today to get us out of a jam. Please forgive us going forward; it will never be the same without her. Mom loved her outside flowers. This summer God gave her one of the most beautiful crops that she has ever raised. We are especially thankful for that. I believe that taking care of Maci while we were at work was one of Mom’s biggest joys in life. She did things with her outside that should have been beyond her years. I cannot begin to guess how many hours Mom and Dad spent sitting on hard bleachers watching Maci at various events loving almost every minute of it. Mom was a great influence on Maci’s upbringing. For that, we are most grateful. Mom was born to Samuel and Leah Laubhan on December 6, 1934. She grew up on a farm East of Durham, KS.

She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, Durham, Ks on January 31, 1935. She was also confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church on May 9, 1948. She graduated from Durham High School at the top of her class on May 14, 1948. Mom and Dad were married on January 18, 1953. They lived a short time in Hillsboro before moving to the family homestead where they have resided for nearly 69 years. Alma Mae Schlehuber, wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many passed from this world November 10 at 2:13 a.m. into her loving Lord's arms. We will miss her so very much. PS. Mom make sure St. Peter gets you a decent stove and pans. We will be joining you in God’s due time…and we promise not to be late.

She passed away in Bonner Springs, Kansas on November 9, 2021 surrounded by her family in their home at the age of 91. She attended and graduated from High School in Wurtzburg, Germany. She was employed as a custodian to clean houses and the bank at Herington, Kansas. She was married to Lupe Bargas in February of 1963. He passed away in December of 2020. Over the years, Barbara enjoyed bowling and cooking. Her loving family includes her two children, Thomas Bargas (Heather) of Kansas City, Kansas, Robert Meisner (Doris) of Germany; four grandchildren, Hannah Bargas of Harker Heights, Texas, Jenna Rosales (Mateo) of Bonner Springs, Kansas, Patricia Meisner, and Barbara Bruckner, both of Germany. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, he and his parents liked to take long bike rides around local lakes and hike the trails to various summits. He and his dad had a special place they named the “awesome stream.” He loved vacation time with his family and friends, especially Diagon Alley in Universal Studios and any snowy destination. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile and his kind and compassionate spirit. A daily funny prank or joke could always be counted on. He was proud of his four budgies, Sky, Lucy, Juliet and Astro (aka Baby Bird) and loved teaching them to talk with his mom. Music was his greatest passion, spending many hours composing. He had an amazing portfolio with a bright, creative future ahead of him. Noah loved spending time with his friends.

Kansas state Rep. Aaron Coleman could face a second complaint from his fellow Democratic lawmakers following his <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2021-10-31/kansas-rep-aaron-coleman-arrested-on-domestic-violence-charge" target="_blank">arrest last month</a> for an alleged domestic battery. And it appears less likely he’d emerge with a simple reprimand like he did last time.

Coleman,
 from Kansas City, Kansas, was the subject of a legislative complaint 
earlier this year based on allegations that he abused and threatened 
women before taking office. An investigative committee ultimately 
dismissed the charge and issued an informal letter of reprimand.

Coleman
 has a history of allegations of abuse and harassment. The 21-year-old 
narrowly defeated an incumbent in last year’s election. That prompted 
calls to remove him when the allegations came to light. He was also <a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-lifestyle-legislature-kansas-city-kansas-263a71a057314255fdf024b3acb34782" target="_blank">recently banned</a> from a state Department of Labor facility.

Democrats on the committee earlier this year initially wanted harsher
 punishment — like a formal censure or expulsion from the Legislature.

“There
 has to be something done, because otherwise this is a slap in the face 
to all those people who are his victims,” Democratic Rep. Cindy Neighbor
 said at the January hearing.

But those efforts couldn’t advance 
because Republicans didn’t want to take more severe action over fear of 
setting a precedent. They said there was no previous instance of a 
lawmaker facing discipline for actions before they took office.

“I
 don’t want to set a precedent that has never been done before in Kansas
 history,” Republican Rep. John Barker said when opposing any formal 
action against Coleman.

If lawmakers file a new complaint against 
Coleman, committee members wouldn’t have the same concerns about setting
 a new precedent. In this case, Coleman would face discipline for 
actions he took while he was a sitting lawmaker.

Few details have so far been released on Coleman’s arrest last month, but <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2021-11-01/kansas-state-rep-aaron-coleman-of-kansas-city-kansas-pleads-not-guilty-to-domestic-violence-charge" target="_blank">court documents</a>
 appear to show the battery charge stems from an alleged altercation 
with a family member. It appears that the family member may be Coleman’s
 brother.

A group of women Democratic legislators say they will 
file a new complaint seeking expulsion if Coleman doesn't step down 
following the battery charge.

“We are alarmed that an individual 
remains in a position of power after continued documented accounts of 
violence,” the lawmakers said in a statement. “The message must be sent 
that violence and dangerous conduct won’t be tolerated.”

One of 
those lawmakers, Democratic Rep. Jo Ella Hoye, said the women had not 
set a deadline for Coleman to resign or face a new complaint.

If a
 new complaint is filed, a committee would be created to investigate. 
That panel would then decide whether to dismiss the complaint or 
recommend some disciplinary action to the full House, which could 
admonish him or kick him out of the Legislature.

With the 2022 
session slated to start Jan. 10, it’s unlikely a special investigative 
committee would be formed and consider a complaint before the next 
session starts.

Coleman did not respond to requests for comment.

What it would take to remove Kan. lawmaker charged with domestic battery

WICHITA, Kansas — The Goddard school district reversed its 
decision to remove nearly 30 books from circulation in its libraries 
after receiving national pushback from authors and free speech 
advocates.

An email sent to families Wednesday said all library 
books are once again available for students to check out while the 
district reviews its vetting process for library materials.

The district had <a href="https://www.kmuw.org/education/2021-11-09/goddard-school-district-orders-29-books-removed-from-circulation" target="_blank">removed more than two dozen books from circulation</a> earlier this week after a parent complained.

The
 list of books initially barred from checkout included classics such as 
“The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Fences” and “The Bluest Eye,” as well as 
contemporary bestsellers such as “The Hate U Give.”

The decision was widely criticized on social media, including by several authors.

“When you’re banning books, you’re on the wrong side of history,” <a href="https://twitter.com/bradmeltzer/status/1458433866742603786" target="_blank">tweeted author Brad Meltzer</a>.

The
 email to Goddard families on Wednesday said a parent “had questions 
about language and graphics from a specific book” their child had 
checked out in September. The parent then submitted a list of 28 books, 
met with the building principal and filled out a “request for review” 
form with the school, the email said.

“When this list came to our 
attention, we checked with multiple school librarians regarding the 
national push to challenge these books,” the email said.

Officials decided to form a committee to examine the vetting process of library materials and the review process for parents.

“At
 that point, the decision was made to hold these books until the 
committee could begin meeting and collect feedback from all principals 
and librarians,” the email said.

The group was set to assemble next week but met Wednesday afternoon instead.

Principals
 and librarians decided to put the challenged books back into 
circulation, the email said. Some of the books on the list are not part 
of the district’s library collection.

Goddard parents have access 
to a database of books their children check out and can receive 
notifications when their children check out a book. In addition, <a href="http://library.goddardusd.com/" target="_blank">library catalogs for all Goddard schools</a> are available on the district’s website.

“Parents are encouraged to always contact their building principal or librarian with concerns,” the email said.

The
 majority of books on Goddard’s list are written by people of color or 
feature characters from diverse backgrounds. Many deal with issues of 
race, gender or sexuality.

Authors and free speech advocates said 
the case is part of a national trend that has school boards trying to 
balance parental outrage with students’ access to diverse books.

The American Library Association said book challenges are up about 60% over the same time last year.

In recent months, many books have been challenged by parents and community members under the guise that they’re <a href="https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/calls-to-ban-books-by-black-authors-are-increasing-amid-critical-race-theory-debates/2021/09" target="_blank">promoting critical race theory</a>.

Last month, a Texas lawmaker <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/10/28/1050013664/texas-lawmaker-matt-krause-launches-inquiry-into-850-books" target="_blank">circulated a list of about 850 books</a> and asked schools statewide to tell him whether they have any books on the list and how much money was spent on them.

Jonathan
 Friedman, director of free expression and education for PEN America, 
said the Goddard case was especially troubling because books were pulled
 out of circulation without a review.

“You have a single parent . .
 . produce a list of books, and the district says, ‘Sure, no problem. We
 won’t let anybody read those books because one parent complained,’” 
Friedman said.

“That's very concerning, considering the importance
 of individual liberties and the importance of the freedom to read in a 
democratic society.”

Amanda Hope Perez, author of “Out of 
Darkness” and a former high school English teacher, said public book 
challenges are troubling. But she’s more concerned about what may be 
happening behind the scenes.

“I've heard from librarians (that) 
folks are being quietly asked to pull materials preemptively. And I 
think that’s even more alarming – the chilling effect,” Perez said.

“It's much harder to respond to that kind of softer censorship that’s occurring.”

Kansas school district reverses decision to pull library books

JACKSON COUNTY–Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged drug distribution.

Just after 11:30p.m. Nov. 6,&nbsp; a sheriff’s deputy stopped a Ford Ranger in the 100 Block of W. 2nd Street in the City of Hoyt for a traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

After an investigation, deputies arrested the passenger, John Bradley Hudson, 46, of Hoyt and booked him into the Jackson County Jail for possession of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

NASA Johnson Space Center Historian Jennifer Ross-Nazzal addresses the subject of Eisenhower and the space program.&nbsp;Her talk explores the launch of Sputnik and its impact upon the United States and the Eisenhower presidency.&nbsp;She will explore how his response left him politically vulnerable and forced to create NASA.&nbsp;In doing so, Eisenhower created the space race he never wanted and the Apollo Program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ross-Nazzal has served as the JSC Historian since 2004.&nbsp;She holds the unique distinction of being a scholar of NASA history and women’s history. She is an accomplished oral historian and author of many articles on NASA, the Space Shuttle, and woman suffrage.&nbsp;In 2011, she published her first book, Winning the West for Women, a biography of suffragist, Emma Smith DeVoe. Her latest manuscript, Making Space for Women, focuses on the history of JSC through the experiences of its female employees and will be published later on this month by the Texas A&amp;M Press.&nbsp;

NASA Johnson Space Center Historian Jennifer Ross-Nazzal addresses the subject of Eisenhower and the space program.&nbsp;Her talk explores the launch of Sputnik and its impact upon the United States and the Eisenhower presidency.&nbsp;She will explore how his response left him politically vulnerable and forced to create NASA.&nbsp;In doing so, Eisenhower created the space race he never wanted and the Apollo Program.&nbsp;&nbsp; Ross-Nazzal has served as the JSC Historian since 2004.&nbsp;She holds the unique distinction of being a scholar of NASA history and women’s history. Today in History - Nov. 11

More than 53.4 million people nationwide expected to travel, the highest single-year increase since 2005

WICHITA – Airports and roads may seem jam-packed this year as AAA predicts 53.4 million people nationwide to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, up 13% from 2020. 

This brings travel volumes within 5% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019, with air travel almost completely recovering from its dramatic fall during the pandemic, up 80% over last year. As restrictions continue to lift and consumer confidence builds, AAA urges travelers to be proactive when making their travel plans this holiday season.

“This Thanksgiving, travel will look a lot different than last year,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president, AAA Travel. “Now that the borders are open and new health and safety guidelines are in place, travel is once again high on the list for Americans who are ready to reunite with their loved ones for the holiday.”

With 6.4 million more people traveling this Thanksgiving coupled with the recent opening of the U.S. borders to fully vaccinated international travelers—people should prepare for roads and airports to be noticeably more crowded.

“International travel re-opening will allow people to reconnect with friends and family and explore new places, while also giving a much-needed boost to the economy,” continued Twidale. “But it also means airports will be busier than we’ve seen, so travelers must plan for longer lines and extra time for TSA checks.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released its&nbsp;<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9%2b%3b1%3d8-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=485087&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">recommendations for holiday gatherings and related travel</a>, saying that the best way to minimize COVID-19 risk is to get vaccinated if you’re eligible. However, everyone’s situation is unique and therefore, AAA urges anyone considering gathering or traveling for Thanksgiving to consult CDC guidance before finalizing holiday plans.

Navigating the new travel landscape This year’s forecast marks the highest single-year increase in Thanksgiving travelers since 2005, bringing travel volumes close to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Despite gas costing over a dollar more per gallon than this time last year, 90% of people plan to travel by car as their preferred mode of travel. Although the car is still the most popular choice for travelers, a greater share will opt to travel by air and other modes such as bus, train or cruise this year. Whether you plan to do so by car or plane, it’s important to know how to navigate the new travel landscape to avoid unnecessary stress and challenges on the way to your Thanksgiving destination.

Be Proactive.&nbsp;Book flights, car rentals, accommodations and other activities as early as possible. Prices are not going down and are still somewhat impacted by the limited capacity of flights and staffing challenges faced by many industries. Consider working with a travel advisor who can make any last-minute changes to travel plans, explore travel insurance options and help plan a trip that meets your needs and comfort level this holiday season.

●Air—Even with air travel seeing a boost this year, AAA finds that the average lowest airfare is 27.3% less than last year coming in at $132. Tuesday and Wednesday are still the most expensive and heaviest travel days with Monday being the lightest and least expensive. Those wanting to book last minute travel will find the best fares about two weeks before Thanksgiving but keep in mind availability may be limited.

●Hotels—Mid-range hotel rates have increased about 39%, with average nightly rates ranging between $137 and $172 for AAA Approved Hotels.

 ●Car Rentals—Daily car rental rates have increased 4% compared to last Thanksgiving at $98. Over the summer, consumers experienced high costs and limited availability of rental cars in some markets due to the semi-conductor chip shortage impacting automakers. While this shortage has subsided, it could return as the holidays near.

Be Patient.&nbsp;The roads and airports will be busy so plan ahead.

●Arrive at the airport early so you’ll have plenty of time to get through longer TSA lines and other travel checkpoints. For domestic travel, AAA suggests 2 hours ahead of departure time and 3&nbsp;hours for international.

 ●Consider booking a flight during non-peak travel periods to cut down on wait times.

●Hit the road when&nbsp;there’s less traffic&nbsp;and allow for extra time when traveling to your destination.

Be Prepared. For the 48.3 million Americans hitting the road, make sure you and your vehicle are ready for the trip ahead as AAA expects to respond to over 400,000 calls for help over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Before any long trip, AAA suggests getting an inspection to check key components like the battery, fuel system, tires, brakes and fluid levels. However, if your vehicle has been sitting idle these systems are particularly vulnerable to deteriorating especially without proper care or maintenance.

JOHNSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a pair of armed robberies and have made an arrest.

Lenexa Police reported two&nbsp;armed robberies Tuesday involving Facebook Marketplace sales of electronics. 

The sales took place in the parking lots of a gas station and a grocery store.&nbsp; Police in Olathe arrested one suspect Tuesday night. The suspect is believed to be tied to both cases.&nbsp; According to the Johnson County Police Department booking report, officers arrested 22-year-old Terrell Harris in Olathe Tuesday on a requested charge of aggravated robbery.
