Salina Public Library’s Youth Services Department is once again seeking enthusiastic teen volunteers to help out during its busy Summer at the Library. The library is accepting applications for VolunTEENs until March 31.

Volunteers will help tidy library areas and shelve books, help with children’s events, tend to the library book drop and assist with other tasks as assigned. Teens will learn job skills and workplace values, and make a difference in their community. Volunteers also earn eligibility for the Joe McKenzie Youth Scholarship provided by the Friends of the Salina Public Library.

Teens ages 13-18 who can commit to at least 16 hours of volunteer work during the summer are invited to apply. Volunteer hours will be needed between May 20 and July 21. Teens need permission from a parent or guardian and need their own transportation to the library.

COWLEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a suspect following a January 19, arrest have added numerous charges against him, according to a media release from Arkansas City police.

On January 19,&nbsp; police arrested 29-year-old Dakota Mikel Hughes of Arkansas City, who was running from police and booked him into the Cowley County Jail on suspicion of two felony counts of interference with a law enforcement officer, three outside warrants for failure to appear, and one count each of criminal possession of a firearm and criminal use of a firearm.

Since then, police in Arkansas City investigated numerous burglaries, thefts and criminal damage to property cases that have occurred from November 2021 through January 2022.

Officers were able to link Hughes to many of these incidents. Cases were presented to the Cowley County Attorney’s Office from both the Arkansas City Police Department and the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;

Hughes now is charged with seven counts of burglary, six counts of theft, four counts of criminal damage to property, three counts of criminal trespass, one count of fleeing and eluding, one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident, and various drug-related charges.

Police continue to investigate related cases and more cases will be presented to the county attorney.

Kansas man arrested in January linked to numerous other crimes

The Salina Police Department this morning issued the following information concerning a shooting incident Wednesday night in north Salina.

On 02-23-2022 at approximately 9:28 PM, the Salina Police Department received information that Devon Wayne Dirksen, who had warrants for his arrest, was located at the Pump Mart, 1118 North 9th Street, Salina, Kansas. Salina Police Officer Michael Chandler was dispatched to that location and contacted Dirksen inside the business.

Dirksen resisted Officer Chandler’s efforts to arrest him, and a physical altercation ensued. Dirksen was able to break free from Officer Chandler and fled outside. Officer Chandler caught Dirksen across the street from the Pump Mart and tackled him to the ground. During the struggle on the ground, Dirksen pulled on Officer Chandler’s sidearm, and then Officer Chandler heard the sound of a gunshot. Dirksen was able to break free, and fled into a nearby residential area. Officer Chandler checked his handgun, and it was still secured in his holster.

With the assistance of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol, Dirksen was located hiding in the area and was taken into custody without further incident. A handgun was found in the area where Officer Chandler and Dirksen were struggling on the ground, and a gunshot was heard.

No one was injured by the gunfire, but Officer Chandler and Dirksen suffered minor injuries from the physical confrontation.

Dirksen was booked into the Saline County Jail, and the following charges are being requested:

Attempted Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggravated Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer, Attempted Aggravated Burglary, Felony Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm in the City Limits, Misdemeanor CriminalDamage to Property. In addition, Dirksen was booked on three Salina Municipal Court warrants for failure to appear and one Saline County District Court warrant for failure to appear.

SPD: Gunshot fired during attempt to arrest Salina man

Today in History - Feb. 24

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal attack and have two suspects in custody.

Just before 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a 911 call in the 600 block of N. Seneca after a caller reported a person was being beaten on the Seneca Street bridge, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

Officers and EMS responded and located a 30-year-old male victim, identified as Blake Barnes of Wichita. He was transported to an area hospital in critical condition and later pronounced deceased, according t Macy.

Officers contacted the witness who was able to direct them to a suspect – identified as&nbsp;63-year-old David Chandler&nbsp; who was reported to have struck Barnes several times with a metal pipe.

Police took Chandler into custody while he was walking away from the crime scene.

The witness reported another suspect was also involved but left the scene on a bicycle prior to officers arriving. The second suspect, identified as&nbsp;31-year-old Abel Molina, was located in the 400 block of N. Seneca, where he was taken into custody.

Both suspects were transported to the Sedgwick County Jail and booked on requested charges of 2nd degree murder and outstanding warrants. All individuals involved are known to be homeless, according to Macy.

2 Kan. men accused of beating victim to death with a pipe

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating&nbsp; information from two separate sources that controlled substances were being smuggled into the Barton County Jail have made arrests, according to Barton County&nbsp; Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

After detectives launched an investigation, they placed a civilian employee under surveillance. It appears the inmates involved were inmate workers or “trustees." Inmate workers have been allowed to assist with various functions around the jail and in the community, including picking up groceries at local businesses for the jail. An inmate worker was allowed to accompany the jail cook on these errands. 

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that the employee and the inmate worker had stopped at a residence in the 500 block of Odell in Great Bend while going to get groceries. The inmate exited the vehicle and contacted a person at the residence.

The inmate worker was identified as Hernan Montez, 30 of Great Bend. He was being held on a contempt of court charge, according to Bellendir. At that point, detectives placed the residence on Odell Street under surveillance. 

When the trustee and the employee returned to the jail, the trustee was searched and suspected methamphetamine was discovered. Detectives began the process of obtaining a search warrant for the address on Odell.&nbsp;

While waiting for a search warrant, a vehicle left the residence, and a traffic stop was conducted. During the stop, the suspect became combative, striking two officers and fled on foot from a location near 6th Street and Odell.

The suspect, identified as Reynaldo Martinez, 35, Great Bend, ran back into the house that was under surveillance. Deputies pursued Martinez inside and after a short struggle he was taken into custody. After the search warrant was obtained for drugs for the same residence, deputies found more than a pound of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of approximately $30,000.

During the investigation, detectives obtained information that the civilian employee, Tammy Batt, 45 of Russell, had been involved in an intimate relationship with one of the prisoners.

Tammy Batt was arrested on requested charges of traffic in contraband in a correctional institution and unlawful sexual relations. Batt was arrested and booked. She has since posted a $50,000 bond.

Reynaldo Martinez was arrested on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, no drug tax stamp, two counts battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and trafficking contraband in a correctional institution. Bond is set at $300,000.

She worked as a beautician, waitress at the Moose Lodge but was most proud of her work as a dispatcher for Workman Transport, Inc.&nbsp; She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Concordia and a former member of the Ladies of the Moose #1428.&nbsp; She and Jim loved to travel the country and she was a big KU basketball, KC Chiefs and Nascar fan.

She is survived by her husband Jim Workman, Concordia, KS; daughters Mary Walker (Ronnie), Concordia, KS and Crystal Perrin, (Lance Salazar), Concordia, KS; grandchildren Stephanie Ryals (Jerrod), Christopher Walker (Jessica), Colton Halfhide, Ciara Halfhide, Riley Halfhide (fiancé Josie Czpanskiy) and Ariana Perrin; great-grandchildren Paxton, Gavyn, Landon and Brooklyn Ryals, Serenity Walker, Peacelyn Walker and Khalani Jo; sister Betty Menor (Tom), Poyne, AR and special friends Sharalyn Coke and Sharon Roy.

You get an unsolicited call from a person claiming to be from <a href="https://privacy.collegeboard.org/important-information-about-telemarketing-internet-scams" target="_blank">the College Board</a>,
 the company responsible for SAT tests, or another educational 
organization. The caller claims to be confirming your address, so they 
can send test prep materials, such as books, CDs, or videos, that your 
child requested at school.

It seems so believable! Several victims reported to <a href="http://www.bbb.org/scamtracker" target="_blank">BBB Scam Tracker</a> that the caller even had their child’s name, phone number, and/or school information.

Of course, there’s a catch. The caller needs you to pay a deposit, 
sometimes several hundred dollars, for the materials. They claim it will
 be refunded when the materials are returned. &nbsp;Unfortunately, if you 
provide your address and credit card details, the materials will never 
arrive, and your deposit will never be refunded. Scammers now have your 
credit card number and other personal information.

Scam alert: Watch out for SAT prep scams

Today is Wednesday, Feb. 23, the 54th day of 2022. There are 311 days left in the year. 

On Feb. 23, 1954, the first mass inoculation of schoolchildren against polio using the Salk vaccine began in Pittsburgh as some 5,000 students were vaccinated. 

In 1685, composer George Frideric Handel was born in present-day Germany. 

In 1822, Boston was granted a charter to incorporate as a city. 

In 1836, the siege of the Alamo began in San Antonio, Texas. 

In 1861, President-elect Abraham Lincoln arrived secretly in Washington to take office, following word of a possible assassination plot in Baltimore. 

In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt signed an agreement with Cuba to lease the area around Guantanamo Bay to the United States. 

In 1942, the first shelling of the U.S. mainland during World War II occurred as a Japanese submarine fired on an oil refinery near Santa Barbara, California, causing little damage. 

In 1945, during World War II, U.S. Marines on Iwo Jima captured Mount Suribachi, where they raised two American flags (the second flag-raising was captured in the iconic Associated Press photograph.)

Faryl Marlene McDill Lange was born on September 19, 1932, northwest of Mankato, Kansas, to Raymond Alma McDill and Ruth May Underwood McDill. She departed her earthly life on February 20, 2022, at the Jewell County Hospital ISB, Mankato, Kansas, at the age of 89 years. 

Faryl was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Paul Lange on December 12, 2021; parents, grandparents; grandson Christopher Alyn Railsback; and sister-in-law Eilene McDill.

Faryl attended school in Mankato except for her 3rd&nbsp;and 4th&nbsp;grades at Enterprise District #26 in Limestone Township.&nbsp; She graduated from Mankato High school in May of 1950 as valedictorian of her class.&nbsp; 

After graduation, she began work as the secretary at the Mankato School District superintendent’s office for two years.&nbsp; She then worked at the Jewell-Mitchell REC. &nbsp;

In the early 1950s Faryl joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato, Kansas.&nbsp; She married Raymond Paul Lange on April 23, 1955 at the church. &nbsp;In 1958 Faryl began her years as a stay-at-home mother.&nbsp; She performed babysitting duties for several children during those years.&nbsp; In 1971 she returned to work at Jewell-Mitchell REC and worked there until her retirement in 1994.

During her youth she helped look after her brothers.&nbsp; She helped with milking cows and feeding the turkeys.&nbsp; She was a member of the Mankato Eager Beavers 4-H Club and had projects at the county and state fairs.&nbsp; She continued to be involved in later years by serving as a superintendent at the fair and taking items to display.&nbsp; She attended many 4-H events for her grandchildren and served as Chelsey’s clothing construction project leader.&nbsp; She took piano lessons from Berniece Scott and encouraged her daughters to take piano lessons.&nbsp; Faryl spent many days suggesting ideas for play activities, listening to piano songs, and teaching the girls about sewing.&nbsp; She welcomed her father-in-law Paul Lange to live with the family for three years.

Faryl was interested in family genealogy and began researching her family history in the late 1960s.&nbsp; She traced her mother’s ancestry to a Revolutionary Solider, Nathan Wood, and with proven records was able to join the Desire Tobey Sears Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution on October 13, 1972.&nbsp; She served in many positions of the chapter and the northwest district including eleven years as chapter Regent.&nbsp; She was the secretary/treasurer of the Cole-Lumpkin-Underwood Reunion which started in 1932 and continues today.&nbsp; She attended many of these picnics over the last 89 years and was always interested in adding to the record books.&nbsp; She continued to explore other family lines and Jewell County history throughout her life.&nbsp; With her passing, a wealth of knowledge about the area is gone.

Faryl was very active in her community.&nbsp; She served as the county recruitment chairman of the Jewell County Bloodmobile, member and officer of Modern Minerva, volunteered at the Jewell County Long-Term Care for bingo and organized programs for Tuesday Happenings, and volunteered at the Thrift Shop to name just a few of her volunteer services.&nbsp; She was president of the Mankato High School Alumni Association, a Girl Scout leader, member of the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary 7830 and served in many capacities including president and treasurer, member of the Mankato Garden Club, the Jewell County Historical Society, and the Jewell American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her daughters Corlene Lange, Barbara Railsback, and Janelle Greene; sons-in-law Burton Railsback and Scott Greene; grandchildren Matt Railsback and wife Allison, Chelsey Greene, Corbin Greene, and Allison Railsback; great grandchildren Sawyer Railsback and Savannah Railsback; brothers Marvin McDill and Mahlon McDill; sister-in-law Phyllis Lange; nephews Richard Sholtz, Mike Metzler, Landon McDill and niece Nickia McDill Vance, several great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato with Pastor Dennis Beckmann officiating and Irene Ortman, musician. &nbsp;Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2022, at Melby Mortuary, Mankato, with family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Casket bearers are her grandchildren Corbin Greene, Matthew Railsback, Chelsey Greene, and Allison Railsback, niece Nickia Vance, and nephews Richard Sholtz, Mike Metzler and Landon McDill. &nbsp;

December 22, 1937 ~ February 19, 2022 (age 84)

With the passing of&nbsp;Joan Ruth Totten Seim Kogler&nbsp;on Feb 19, 2022, (age 84) we lost a kindred spirit, infectious smile, bright eyes that could see through anything and anybody, an engaging wit, and compassionate friend who was more interested in helping others than herself.

Joan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. 

She was preceded in death by her brother Wayne Totten, d.1945; mother Ester Gentry Totten, d.1952; father Harry Totten, d.1957; first husband Gale Seim, d.1959; stepmother Alvina Schwartz Totten, d.1986; sister Jean Totten Huff, d. 2003; and second husband Stan Kogler, d.2020.

Joan was born in Shelbyville, Indiana on December 22, 1937.&nbsp; Her family moved to Udall, Kansas when she was three following her grandfather who was a Methodist minister.&nbsp; They soon relocated to Gypsum, KS. where her father found work as a prison guard in the Falun WWII prison camp.&nbsp; Those “dumb-assed boys” of Gypsum never knew what hit them from third grade on!

Joan grew up quick when her mother lost her life on the operating table at the young age of 44.&nbsp; Joan, only 15, she had to be “mom” to younger sister Jean, and homemaker for the family.&nbsp; To help make ends meet, she made their clothes, becoming an excellent seamstress, even teaching 4-H sewing later in life.&nbsp; She also helped the Ade’s process chickens for the Abilene Hospital, even to the point of chopping off the chickens heads and fully dressing them!&nbsp; She graduated from Gypsum High school as valedictorian of her class, was a cheerleader, baton twirler, played both the bass and snare drums and was rarely challenged in ping-pong during her lunch hour!

Soon after high school she married Gale Seim and bore two children, Larry of Southport, NC, and Pam of Steamboat Springs, CO.&nbsp; The tragic farm tractor death of Gale left Joan a widow at age 21.&nbsp; 

Fortunately for the young family, a great friend, Stan Kogler, came to their rescue and married Joan, raising her kids, and their own son, Duane of Vancouver, WA.

With their children all graduating from college and pursuing their own careers, Stan and Joan continued living on the farm near Kipp, KS for over 60 years.&nbsp; During that time, along with farming, they ran a successful country electrical and plumbing business, with Stan providing the knowledge and labor, and Joan “doing the books.”&nbsp; Not engaging enough for Joan, she also worked as a legal secretary, drove the kids’ school bus, and of course, was an excellent homemaker and cook.&nbsp; Her cinnamon rolls and pies were used to bribe Stan to do work on “their” house and delight the kids’ college friends and hunting buddies!&nbsp;

Joan also had a love for drawing and drafted the family’s country home.&nbsp; That led to an interest in artistic painting and she learned several types, but thoroughly enjoyed oil painting.&nbsp; Stan had given her painting lessons and even converted the home’s one car garage to a painting studio where she perfected her craft and even taught classes. Her work was published in local newspapers/mags and exhibited in fairs, where she won several awards, including Wheat Hearts Lifetime Achievement award.&nbsp; Over a 40 year period, she recreated over 100 renderings and detailed over 300 porcelain “Santas” she gave as gifts to family and friends.&nbsp;

Her love for painting and her painting friends took her around the country attending workshops, with favorite experiences being Canyon de Chelly, AZ and 4WD jeep rides around Ouray, CO.&nbsp; Her travels also developed an interest in diverse nativity sets and she amassed over 500 pieces, many from her painting friends and family, that she would display in her home and decorate her Christmas tree.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Some of her favorite memories were attending athletic events of her kids and family vacations to Indiana, Colorado and California, and of course visiting her kids and grand-kids living in Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, California, Connecticut, Washington, Colorado and North Carolina.&nbsp; She also enjoyed her 50th wedding anniversary when the kids surprised her with a family cruise through the inside passage of Alaska.

Joan lived a full life, despite numerous family deaths in her early years, and struggles later with heart condition and diabetes that limited her mobility.&nbsp; But her memory and vision were exceptional right until the end, and the family was able to reminisce personally and via Facetime many great memories.&nbsp; She will be missed by family and friends here on earth, but looks forward to seeing all of those that preceded her, hoping that Gale and Stan will be fighting for her affection!&nbsp;

Joan leaves behind son Larry of Southport, NC, daughter-in-law Laura and grandchildren Michael and Meredith Smith (Michael); daughter Pam Beardmore of Steamboat Springs CO, son-in-law David, grandchild Allison Nash (Ben) and great-grandchildren Charli, Kimbal and Sloane; grandchildren Madison and Emily; son Duane of Vancouver, WA, daughter-in-law Karen, and grandchildren Mathew, Daniel and Katie; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2022, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Salina, KS. Burial will be in the Gypsum City Cemetery, Gypsum, KS. Friends may call at the Ryan Mortuary on Thursday, February 24, 2022, from 4 until 8 p.m. that evening where the family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m.
