Two local community banks, Bennington State Bank and First Bank Kansas came together to finance the first phase of Salina Destination, a new multi-family housing development in Salina, Kansas. 

This collaborative effort is being led by Bennington State Bank as the lead financer, with First Bank Kansas as a participating financial supporter of the project.

According to the leadership of both financial institutions, the involvement of these two community banks underscores their shared commitment to foster community growth by providing much-needed housing options for residents.

The new housing project, named Magnolia Village, will be located near the intersection of Magnolia Road and Interstate 135.

The City of Salina was awarded $25,000,000 through Kansas HB 2510 &amp; Kansas SB 267 by the Department of Commerce to help accommodate housing expansion. The Magnolia Village project will receive a portion of these funds.&nbsp;

The first phase of the development includes 254 apartments featuring spacious floor plans, in-house laundry and various outdoor amenities. The project responds to the projected influx of new employees in Salina, driven by the community’s robust economic development. 

“This is the culmination of a lot of work by a lot of people over a lot of years," said Salina City Manager Mike Schrage. 

Schrage emphasized that many background economic successes, months of preparation, and multiple instrumental people have contributed to this point of the project.

Salina Destination Development, the organization behind Magnolia Village, aims to create a residential complex that not only meets the community's immediate needs but also enhances the overall quality of life for its residents.

Phase 1 construction is expected to be completed in early 2026.

E. Dean Williams was born March 3, 1928, in Glasco, Ks. and died February 13, 2024, at the age of 95. He was the youngest of 6 children born to Jesse and Emma Olson Williams and graduated from Glasco High in 1946. He then served for 2 years in the U.S. Navy Air Corps before returning to Glasco upon his honorable discharge. Dean then went to work at the Co-Op service station for a year and then the Natural Gas Pipeline Station in Glasco. In May 1951 Dean was united in marriage to Joyce Henning, a marriage that lasted 63 years until her passing in 2014. In December 1953, Dean and Joyce moved to Hammond, IL. as the Company transferred him to a new pipeline station there. While living there, their two children were born, Jody in December 1953 and Randy in October 1955. Dean and Joyce missed Cloud County, so they moved to Concordia in May 1956 and Dean accepted a job with the Co-Op. He accepted a position with the Fidelity State Bank in 1958 and continued working in the banking industry until his retirement in 1993. During his 35 years in the banking business, he was a strong supporter of the community, having served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, the Cloud-Republic Bankers Association, and the Bankers of America Institute in Salina. Dean was also one of the Founders of the Cloud County Community College and served on the Board of Trustees for 4 years, being the Chair the final year. He was also a long-time member of the NCK Saddle Club and helped with the construction of the new rodeo arena. Hobbies included hunting, horseback riding, and fishing. He also loved to play pool and pitch. Dean was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather and was never happier than spending time with his family, especially with the grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joyce, brothers Lyle, Lewie, and Jack and sisters Melva Letourneau and Eva Crum. He is survived by children Jody (Alex) Sanchez of Salina and Randy (Deb) Williams of Valley Center, Ks., 3 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren,3 great great grandchildren, and special friend, Beulah Nobert.

A memorial service officiated by Pastor Jim Winter will be held June 7th, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Concordia Lutheran Church with visitation with the family from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The service will be followed by a luncheon at the church and inurnment at the Glasco Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

Dewey G. Nelson June 10, 1949 ~&nbsp;May 24, 2024

Dewey G. Nelson, 74, Concordia, Kansas, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024 at Advena Living of Clay Center. He was born on June 10, 1949 to Durrel and Velma (French) Nelson in Belleville, Kansas.

He attended Concordia Schools and graduated in 1968. He went on to work for ABB and Cloud Ceramics.

Dewey married Kathy Bible in 1970 in Golden, Colorado.

Dewey could do just about anything he was asked. Kathy might ask him to build or fix something and he would disappear to his shop and reappear with something that would work perfectly. He loved working on cars and boats.

His beloved Lhasa Apso, Charlie Brown passed away in 2023 but before that they could be seen on drives around town or at their daily trip to the dog park.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Durrel and Velma Nelson.

He will be missed by his wife Kathy Nelson of Concordia, KS; his brother, Raymond Nelson (Donna) of Concordia, KS; nephews, Tony Nelson (Jasmine) of Olathe, KS, and Chris Nelson (Faye) of Hooper, NE; and six great nieces.

A memorial service will be held at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home on Monday, June 3rd , 2024 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor David Redmond officiating. Family will greet friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, rural Concordia. Lee White was born September 19, 1940 in Richmond, Missouri, the son of Wilbert and Almira (Hillyard) White. Lee passed away at his home in rural Chapman, Kansas Friday May 24, 2024.

Lee worked for many years in the Wichita area as a security guard. Lee is survived by his long time partner Dawn Valera, his daughter Dana White (Cathrine) Derby, Kansas and his son Darryl White (Paula) of rural Chapman, Kansas Lee was preceded in death by his parents.

The family has chosen cremation and there will be no funeral services. A graveside service will be held at the Liberty Cemetery rural Chapman on June 15, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.

According to Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois, the internet has been restored to the Salina City/Saline County Building.&nbsp; At 9:46 a.m. NexTech announced via social media that the emergency maintenance is complete, and customers should see their service come back online.&nbsp; NexTech Customer Solutions Specialist, John Hendrick said customers may need to reboot their router by disconnecting it from power for about 60 seconds.&nbsp; If customers continue to have connection issues, please contact the NexTech Help Desk at 688-565-3200.

Last night, NexTech encountered an internal issue with its internet infrastructure.&nbsp;

John Hendrick, customer solutions specialist at NexTech said the issue is affecting approximately 1,000 customers.&nbsp;

"We are aware that during maintenance last night that there was some internal issues that happened," Hendrick said. "All of us are working diligently to get the problem resolved in a quick and expedient manner."

Saline County residents told Salina Post they were experiencing exceptionally long lines at the&nbsp;Saline County Vehicle Registration office. Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois confirmed the internet is down.&nbsp;

"We're just flat down. I came in at 7 a.m. this morning and couldn't log on," DuBois said. "I talked to IT, and they just said they're working on it."

Marvin G. Heffel, of Dorrance, KS, passed away on April 28, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita,&nbsp;KS, at the age of 78. He was born on January 17, 1946, to Arthur and Helen (Lind) Heffel in Ellsworth, KS.&nbsp;Marvin married Sylvia Baral on August 27, 1974, in Wichita, KS. They were blessed with three children:&nbsp;Stacy, Stephanie, and Travis.

Marvin grew up in Dorrance and graduated from Dorrance High School in 1964. He went on to Fort Hays&nbsp;University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business. He started out working as a driver and&nbsp;manager for Bankers Dispatch and other divisions. He then owned and operated Overnight Express&nbsp;Courier Services in Los Angeles, CA for 10 years. In 1992 he sold the company and moved back to Russell&nbsp;and worked for 4-Way Trucking out of Hays for 6 years and was currently working with Quest-Diagnostics.

Marvin was a KU, Chiefs, and Royals fan. He enjoyed Sunday family dinners, drives with his wife,&nbsp;listening to music as well as playing Rock-N-Roll songs on the piano for his family,especially his&nbsp;grandkids. Marvin loved birdwatching; he knew all the species. He served his&nbsp;country in the United&nbsp;States Army during the Vietnam War. He also was the Commander and Vice Commander in the&nbsp;Dorrance American Legion Post #334 and a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dorrance.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Sylvia Heffel of the home in Dorrance; children, Stacy and John Bonds of&nbsp;Broomfield, CO, Stephanie and David Cardinal of Salina, KS, and Travis and Kristy Heffel of Wilson, KS;&nbsp;sister, Karen Kircher (Ken) of Indianola, NE; brother, Larry Heffel (Marilyn) of Lenexa, KS; 8&nbsp;grandchildren, Taylor, Tehya, Takotah, Ivorie, Solei, and Raydio Bonds, Lydia and Brekyn Heffel; step-grandson, David Cardinal Jr.; 2 great-grandchildren, Aubree&nbsp;and Kinzlee Bonds and soon to be Jett&nbsp;Bonds; and 2 step-great-grandchildren, David III and Damir Cardinal.

Preceding Marvin in death are his parents, Art and Helen; brother, Arlan “Dots” Heffel; and step-granddaughter, Sydnee Cardinal.

A Celebration of Life Service will be&nbsp;held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 10:30AM at the First Lutheran Church in Dorrance, KS.

He enjoyed Sunday family dinners, drives with his wife,&nbsp;listening to music as well as playing Rock-N-Roll songs on the piano for his family,especially his&nbsp;grandkids. Marvin loved birdwatching; he knew all the species. He served his&nbsp;country in the United&nbsp;States Army during the Vietnam War. K-State beef cattle veterinarians relay how to make the most of grazing warm and cool season grasses

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Pastures can be thought of in the same light as bank accounts. If an account holder withdraws a lot of money early in the year, then they’re left with nothing to spend on essential things down the line.

Beef producers who manage their pastureland in the same way can face similar repercussions.

Kansas State University veterinarians spoke about summer grazing management techniques that can keep pastures “in the black” on a recent episode of&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2024/05/24/international-visitors-summer-grazing-the-electronic-nose/">Cattle Chat</a>.

“When we have cool-season grasses right now, they should be doing pretty well in most parts of the country and are very productive. Our warm-season grasses, depending on where you are, maybe haven’t quite come on yet,” K-State veterinarian Brad White said. “We need to think about our plan because both of those types of grasses have what are called dry spells where they’re less productive.”

K-State nutritionist Phillip Lancaster suggests introducing annual warm-season grasses to help balance out a pasture’s nutritional value when cool-season plants start to decline.

“Adding some annual warm-season forages to your grazing land rotation can be very beneficial so that you get something that is peaking in production when cool-season grasses are slowing down because of the heat,” he said.

Lancaster added: “When we get into the July and August timeframe, the cool-season grasses are not able to tolerate the heat, so their productivity slows way down.”

After cattle have grazed down cool-season plants, planting warm-season grasses like sorghum-sudangrass, pearl millet or crabgrass straight into those pastures, or overseeding, serves as a great option for grazing cattle, according to Lancaster.

“Crabgrass is actually a very good (plant) that doesn’t have the potential to introduce some of the animal health problems that sorghum-sudangrass can with nitrate toxicity, but those are still some good options as we’re thinking about planting.”

For producers who employ a rotational grazing plan, frequently monitoring the growth of the plants within a pasture plays a key part in keeping grass in good condition.

“As you’re rotating to new pastures, paying attention to previously grazed pastures and how they are recovering and regrowing can kind of tell you how fast you need to rotate animals to maintain that plant in kind of a vegetative state,” Lancaster said.

White agreed and added: “In terms of your pasture movement, some of those things need to be sped up or slowed down based on conditions. There’s no static.”

To capture the full benefits of grazing the cool-season plants within a pasture, it’s important they stay immature for as long as possible.

“One of our goals in some of these cool-season forage systems is to try to minimize that plant going into a reproductive stage,” Lancaster said.

White added: “So, keep it from going to seed and getting ‘stemmy.’”

NWS Wichita — holiday weekend weather outlook

WASHINGTON, D.C. — With Thursday scheduled as the day for the markup of the next five-year Farm Bill in the House Agriculture Committee, Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann went to the House floor to praise the initial product that he has seen thus far heading into the process.

Mr. Speaker, this is a week that farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers in my state have long-awaited. The House Agriculture Committee will finally markup a five-year Farm Bill. I want to start by saying thank you to Chairman G.T. Thompson for leading the committee in developing a bipartisan, comprehensive, fiscally conservative Farm Bill that gives our farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers the certainty they deserve.

Around this time last year, the Chairman and I hosted a Farm Bill listening session in the middle of a wheat field in my District. We heard from 150 Kansans about their priorities for a Farm Bill. They were clear—they need a Farm Bill that gives them certainty as they work day-in and day-out to feed, clothe, and fuel the world. The Farm, Food, and National Security Act does just that.

This Farm Bill strengthens the farm safety net and protects crop insurance. Agricultural producers in Kansas understand firsthand how important that is. In February 2021, Kansas had 13 consecutive days of below freezing temperatures which was a 40-year record. Our producers worked around the clock to protect their cattle and ensure they survived. Just last summer, drought and market conditions in Kansas caused producers to abandon the highest number of acres of wheat since World War One. Wheat farmers have seen a 35% decrease in production in the last year as a result. Mr. Speaker, the reality is Mother Nature is a very difficult business partner. One bad crop year could put the livelihood of our producers and their families at risk. This Farm Bill gives these hardworking individuals more certainty by strengthening the farm safety net, adjusting reference prices, and modernizing the Livestock Indemnity Program, dairy supports, and Conservation Reserve Program.

The committee’s Farm Bill also maintains American food independence and invests tax dollars in places we can see a return on those dollars. America is the freest country in the world, in part because we have never had to rely on another country to feed us. At the heart of that independence is agricultural research and innovation.

The Big First is home to some of the crown jewels of the animal health corridor—Kansas State University and the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility. These institutions give the nation a scientific hub of world renown research. Kansas State University is conducting groundbreaking research into areas, including new heat-tolerant wheat varieties and higher yielding sorghum. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s state-of-the-art National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, Kansas, will conduct research into serious animal disease threats and be an important backstop in protecting our nation’s food supply. This work, and America’s continued ability to feed ourselves for generations to come, depend on a five-year Farm Bill that prioritizes food security as national security.

Mr. Speaker, this Farm Bill makes robust investments in the Market Access Program and Foreign Market Development cooperator programs that ensure our American producers remain in the international marketplace. It proactively addresses issues like deferred maintenance costs at land-grant institutions and the country’s veterinarian shortage before the problem gets worse.

I’ve been to this floor nearly thirty times to push for my priorities in the Farm Bill—to protect and strengthen crop insurance, promote trade programs that help America remain competitive and secure, conduct rigorous oversight of the executive branch to fight big government overreach, and invest in agricultural research at America’s land-grant universities.&nbsp;I’m pleased that the Farm, Food, and National Security Act does just that.

We need to pass a five-year, fiscally conservative Farm Bill long enough to provide certainty and short enough for Congress to respond to market changes. Farm Bills feed every corner of the nation from New England to the islands of Hawaii, both our coasts, down to the Gulf, and even the heartland of the country, including Kansas.&nbsp;American agricultural producers and consumers are counting on it. The legislation we markup this week will have ripple effects for the next half-decade. This body, and Congress, must use this legislation to address the concerns we have all heard over the last several years.

When we kicked off our Farm Bill listening session last year there were three combines parked behind us – John Deere, Case, and Gleaner. When you grow up on a farm, you’re born into a loyalty to one of these trusted American brands. They have different styles and features, but they are all designed to do the same thing – harvest. Our listening session that day, and the bill the House Agriculture Committee markup this week are no different. We all have different priorities and backgrounds, but we’re all here to do the same thing – harvest, work hard, and effectively churn out a product – the Farm Bill.&nbsp;American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers deserve it, America’s food and national security depend on it, and Congress must deliver it.

This Farm Bill is something our agricultural community can be proud of. It&nbsp;puts&nbsp;dollars in places where Americans&nbsp;can see&nbsp;a good return on&nbsp;their&nbsp;investment. It tightens budgets and reins in reckless spending that doesn’t serve taxpayers. Most importantly, this&nbsp;bill ensures that American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers can continue to keep us all fed, fueled, and clothed.&nbsp;The Farm, Food, and National Security Act&nbsp;is the first step in the right direction, and I look forward to this week’s markup.

It proactively addresses issues like deferred maintenance costs at land-grant institutions and the country’s veterinarian shortage before the problem gets worse.I’ve been to this floor nearly thirty times to push for my priorities in the Farm Bill—to protect and strengthen crop insurance, promote trade programs that help America remain competitive and secure, conduct rigorous oversight of the executive branch to fight big government overreach, and invest in agricultural research at America’s land-grant universities.&nbsp;I’m pleased that the Farm, Food, and National Security Act does just that.We need to pass a five-year, fiscally conservative Farm Bill long enough to provide certainty and short enough for Congress to respond to market changes. Farm Bills feed every corner of the nation from New England to the islands of Hawaii, both our coasts, down to the Gulf, and even the heartland of the country, including Kansas.&nbsp;American agricultural producers and consumers are counting on it. The legislation we markup this week will have ripple effects for the next half-decade. This body, and Congress, must use this legislation to address the concerns we have all heard over the last several years.When we kicked off our Farm Bill listening session last year there were three combines parked behind us – John Deere, Case, and Gleaner. When you grow up on a farm, you’re born into a loyalty to one of these trusted American brands. They have different styles and features, but they are all designed to do the same thing – harvest. Our listening session that day, and the bill the House Agriculture Committee markup this week are no different. We all have different priorities and backgrounds, but we’re all here to do the same thing – harvest, work hard, and effectively churn out a product – the Farm Bill.&nbsp;American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers deserve it, America’s food and national security depend on it, and Congress must deliver it.This Farm Bill is something our agricultural community can be proud of. It&nbsp;puts&nbsp;dollars in places where Americans&nbsp;can see&nbsp;a good return on&nbsp;their&nbsp;investment. It tightens budgets and reins in reckless spending that doesn’t serve taxpayers. Most importantly, this&nbsp;bill ensures that American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers can continue to keep us all fed, fueled, and clothed.&nbsp;The Farm, Food, and National Security Act&nbsp;is the first step in the right direction, and I look forward to this week’s markup.

Marvin D. McDaniel, age 91, of Sarasota, FL, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, FL. &nbsp;He was born on July 22, 1932, in Concordia, Kansas, to Marvin &amp; Margaret (Sterling) McDaniel.

He graduated from Concordia High School in 1950. After serving in the Navy, he earned a BS in Business Administration from Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1959.

Marvin served active duty in the US Navy for 4 years, from 1952-1956, as a Yeoman 2nd class (YN2). He served in the Special Weapons Unit, Pacific, Detachment ONE, NAS, Moffett Field and San Diego, California. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged.

Marvin worked for Standard Oil of Indiana / Amoco Oil as a Petroleum Auditor. His job took him around the globe from 1959-1989 to Wyoming, New York, and many countries including Argentina, Venezuela, Trinidad &amp; Tobago, Liberia, Spain, Iran, Bermuda. While in Trinidad &amp; Tobago, he would go deep sea fishing and attend Carnival in costume. After 30 years, he retired in 1989 to Sarasota, FL, where he spent his time enjoying “God’s Country”. As a creature of habit, every single morning he would read his newspaper, in order, and fold it right back up the way it was delivered. For fun, he would visit local casinos where he would get caught up in the sounds and anticipation of winning with each spin on the slot machines.&nbsp;

Marvin enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching Hallmark movies as well as KU basketball, Tampa Bay Rays and Buccaneers. He was a voracious reader, so much so that he has 17 bookcases in his house busting at the seams with novels stacked on top of them and every shelf overflowing! After retiring to Sarasota, he enjoyed going to “work” everyday speed-walking 5 miles up and down Siesta Key Beach, then relaxing and enjoying his lunch under his umbrella. He’d go for a swim determined to go beyond the bouys and float on his back. He was a “meat and potatoes” man and always took delight in eating his favorite black walnut ice cream! He enjoyed blasting classical music on his stereo so he could listen to the individual instruments, like the drums and cymbals. Some of his favorite musical artists he listened to include Andy Williams (“Where Do I Begin”), Matt Monro (“On Days Like These”), Herb Alpert, Elvis, Tony Bennett, and Frank Sinatra.&nbsp;

Family was always important to him. He and his family would go back to Concordia often for holidays with extended family. Pinochle games were a way family bonded at these get-togethers. He would spend months away from his own home each year, staying and visiting with family members in their homes, and he was always welcomed.

He is survived by his sons, Ali McDaniel (Christine), Sarasota, FL, and Reza McDaniel (Laura), Naperville, IL. Grandchildren – Sofia, Cameron, Isabella, Farah, Gia, Brianna, Alexa, and Celina. Brother - Dennis McDaniel (Julie), Tampa, FL. Sister-in-Law - Bonnie McDaniel, Maryland Heights, MO. The Harvest Farmers Market will continue to offer the Double Up Food Bucks program, a healthy food incentive program that helps low-income families eat more healthy food and supports local farmers

The Harvest Farmers Market is every Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at 1325 E. Cloud Street in the Emmanuel Church parking lot.

SNAP participants who shop at the Harvest Farmers Market can swipe their EBT cards to get tokens to use for food purchases. Through the Double Up program, SNAP participants receive a matching number of Double Up Food Bucks tokens for free, up to $25 per day. This doubles the amount of dollars they can spend on healthy food at the market. 

The SNAP tokens can be used to buy any SNAP eligible items at the market, and the matching free Double Up Food Bucks tokens can be used for any fresh fruits and vegetables. The Double Up tokens can be used any time at the market through October 31, 2024 market season.

"Through the Double Up Food Bucks program, we're not just nourishing bodies, but nurturing communities. By incentivizing fresh produce purchases, we're fostering healthier eating habits, supporting local farmers, and strengthening our local economy. It's a win-win-win that's sowing the seeds of a brighter, healthier future for Salina, Kansas," said Kirsty Hartley. "The Harvest Farmers Market is a family-friendly place where people connect with the farmers who grow their food, try new foods and learn new cooking techniques, and set lifelong habits of eating and loving fresh fruits and vegetables.”

Double Up Food Bucks is funded by grants totaling 12.5-million-dollars from the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, a division of the USDA in addition to generous gifts from the Kansas Health Foundation, Health Forward Foundation, the Hall Family Foundation, the Marion &amp; Henry Bloch Foundation and Blue KC. 

This year, the program is offered at more than 160 locations, including over 70 farmers markets, farm stands, and mobile markets, and 90 grocery stores throughout Kansas and Missouri.

By MICHAEL SMITHInsight Kansas Kansas policymakers are abuzz about the recent defeat of a sports stadium tax in Jackson County, MO.&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, they’re saying all the wrong things.&nbsp; To paraphrase James Carville, “it’s affordable housing, stupid.”

If the tax had been approved, the money would have gone to renovate Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs.&nbsp; The three eights cent sales tax extension would also have partially financed a new, downtown stadium for the Royals. Before the vote, nearly all publicity was on the Royals, who confused voters by&nbsp;repeatedly changing plans and venues&nbsp;for months prior to the vote.&nbsp; The opposition was led by KC Tenants, who had a&nbsp;simple message– why subsidize billionaire-owned, for-profit sports teams with a regressive sales tax that falls hardest on the poor, when Kansas Citians cannot find decent, affordable housing? This problem extends well into Kansas.

Few observers believe the defeat had anything to do with Arrowhead Stadium, or the Chiefs. Arrowhead will already be the&nbsp;site of renovations&nbsp;in advance of the 2026 World Cup, which will feature games played there. For additional improvements, the Chiefs and Royals now plan to&nbsp;seek support separately. The Chiefs have a stronger case, and they wish to remain at Arrowhead.

Of course, none of this kept the hype machine from springing into action.&nbsp; Proposals came from as far away as&nbsp;San Antonio, suggesting that the Chiefs move (they have a fiercely loyal fan base here and no plans to move).&nbsp; Ignoring the caution of Governor Kelly, Kansas Legislators also leapt into the act, suggesting an&nbsp;extravagant new Chiefs stadium in Wyandotte County,&nbsp;with a ludicrous plan to fund it with STAR bonds.&nbsp; Considering that the more modest Prairie Fire project in Overland Park recently&nbsp;defaulted&nbsp;on its STAR bonds, the idea that a multibillion dollar football stadium could be entirely financed this way is outrageous. Granted, Sporting Kansas City’s Children's Mercy soccer stadium in Wyandotte County was a successful STAR bonds project–but it is much smaller and only a fraction the cost of a new football stadium.&nbsp; When STAR bonds default, Kansas and/or local taxpayers are on the hook, as with Prairie Fire.

All this hype completely misses the point.&nbsp; The real story of that Jackson County vote is not about sports at all.&nbsp; It is about housing costs.

KC Tenants is a&nbsp;new group&nbsp;formed out of backlash against the KC area’s skyrocketing housing costs and substandard rental housing. Last year, they upset an establishment candidate to win a seat on the KCMO city council, and now this. The housing problem is also hitting hard in Kansas, and it is only a matter of time before KC Tenants or similar groups start popping up here. They secured a 58% “no” vote on the sports tax in Jackson County, despite being outspent by about 20 to 1.&nbsp;

Housing costs are shooting up all over Kansas.&nbsp; In the last year, they rose&nbsp;6.9% in KC,&nbsp;5.5% in Lawrence&nbsp;(where they were already high), and a&nbsp;whopping 10.9% in Wichita. In Topeka, a recent KSNT story found that housing costs have&nbsp;nearly doubled in the last two decades.&nbsp; In many places where affordable housing can still be found, it is in poor condition.&nbsp; This includes&nbsp;large swaths of rural Kansas.

Nationally, housing costs are rising&nbsp;twice as fast as wages.&nbsp; This drains money from other needs, lowers the quality of life, and worsens homelessness.&nbsp; Expect this new movement’s influence to keep spreading across both states, until policymakers start listening.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Kansas needs affordable housing, not a football stadium

The 2024 Smoky Hill River Festival Medallion Quest is officially over — the medallion has been found.&nbsp;

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities announced this evening that Salinan Mandy Copp found this year's medallion just hours ago in Centennial Park in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp;

"A great story of a team that worked hard to interpret most of the clues correctly to get to the correct space," said Brad Anderson, Director at Salina Arts and Humanities. "We've had people find it [the medallion] fast by misinterpreting clues, and still getting to the right place. They did pretty well at keying in on a couple we thought were obscure."&nbsp;

This year's medallion resembles a railroad spike that holds a railroad tie in place. It was made from hardware, including rebar and threaded pipe. A rolled piece of paper with the medallion information and the message 'You found it' was inside the hollow spike.&nbsp;

On Friday morning, Mandy and her husband Sean went to Centennial Park after they dropped their son Jacob off at school.&nbsp;

"We were pretty sure the 'south of The King' clue meant the Elvis statue in Spangles," Mandy Copp said at the press conference held on Friday evening. "I told Jacob, 'I'm so sure it is at Centennial Park. I'll pay you $50 to skip Play Day at school to go look for it,'" Mandy Copp said as the audience laughed along with her. "Jacob said,' No.''

Mandy's son Jacob had explored the area where the Medallion was found, laying on his stomach and poking his fingers in the holes of the railroad tie along the sidewalk. He was part of the reason Mandy Copp stayed in the area and started searching more thoroughly.

As 4:30 p.m. drew closer and the next clue was about to be revealed, Mandy and her crew of searchers went back to Centennial Park. They weren't alone — others had caught on and were looking South of the King and west of a wide path — Broadway Boulevard.&nbsp;

"Lots of people were in that area and there was a group of people specifically at the top of the steps where the railroad tie was when Jacob got there," Mandy Copp said. "When I found it everyone was super positive and congratulating us."

Mandy Copp found the medallion around 4:45 p.m. on Friday, May 17.

Mandy Copp said each year she looks for the medallion and thinks she is on the right track.&nbsp;

"Inevidably every year I'm like,'This is the year, this has got to be where it is," Mandy Copp said. "And then all the clues come out and I was nowhere close to where it was."

Mandy Copp said with the number of community members out looking for the medallion, she is confident it would've been found today. This year marks the 18th year the Smoky Hill River Festival has held the Medallion Quest.

“The Festival Medallion Quest celebrates our community's patronage of the arts. It is exciting to see how Questers explore and think differently about their city in search of the medallion as it leads up to the Smoky Hill River Festival,” said Visual Arts Coordinator Crystal Hammerschmidt. 

Mandy Copp received a prize package of $1,000 in cash and $2,000 in gift certificates for shopping at the Smoky Hill River Festival Fine Art and Craft Show. Additionally, they received four festival admission wristbands, a complimentary on-grounds VIP parking pass, an invitation for four to the Thursday evening PREMIERE Art Patron Party, and four 2024 River Festival t-shirts.

The Smoky Hill River Festival, now in its 48th year, is the flagship event of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, a department of the City of Salina. The River Festival draws many local residents and out-of-town guests each year to Salina to enjoy outdoor art installations, the Fine Art and Craft Show, three stages of live entertainment, the Artyopolis kid’s area, Festival food, and more. 

The River Festival generates approximately $3.5 million in revenue annually within the local community. Advance-price, four-day Festival Wristbands are available until late Tuesday, June 11, at 40 Salina locations and in 18 other regional cities. Children 11 and under get in FREE.

 </figure>By NATE KING Salina PostThe 2024 Smoky Hill River Festival Medallion Quest is officially over — the medallion has been found.&nbsp;Salina Arts &amp; Humanities announced this evening that Salinan Mandy Copp found this year's medallion just hours ago in Centennial Park in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp;"A great story of a team that worked hard to interpret most of the clues correctly to get to the correct space," said Brad Anderson, Director at Salina Arts and Humanities. "We've had people find it [the medallion] fast by misinterpreting clues, and still getting to the right place. They did pretty well at keying in on a couple we thought were obscure."&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>This year's medallion resembles a railroad spike that holds a railroad tie in place. It was made from hardware, including rebar and threaded pipe. Country music hit-maker Jason Michael Carroll from Youngsville, North Carolina, rose to fame after being discovered at a local talent competition in 2004 and later signed to the Arista Nashville label in 2006, releasing his debut album Waitin’ In The Country. The album produced three Top 40 hits including “Alyssa Lies,” “Livin’ Our Love Song,” and “I Can Sleep When I’m Dead” and soared to number one on the US Country charts, selling nearly half a million copies. Both of Carroll’s following albums, Growing Up Is Getting Old and Numbers have charted on the Billboard Top 200.

He has opened for Brooks &amp; Dunn, Trace Adkins, and Alan Jackson, and was a featured part of Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride’s 2008 tour. He was also performed on Good Morning America, thrilled the crowds at the CMA Music Festival, and has graced the Grand Ole Opry stage on multiple occasions.

Jason Michael Carroll is a consummate songwriter and continues to write and release new material. Carroll remains humble and optimistic about the future, stating, “I don’t take for granted what I’m doing, and I thank God and my fans every day I have the chance to keep doing it.”

The magic of the keys brought him his hunger for music as a child. The good ole’ down home boy grew up playing his mother’s piano and singing in church. After graduating high school, he took a job as a corrections officer in his hometown of Lyons, Georgia. But music never left his side. 

Taking a cue from the sounds of classic country and idols like Travis Tritt and Randy Travis, Campbell started a band and played local and national bar gigs. When the guitar player quit, Campbell took that as a sign to chase his dreams all the way to Nashville, Tennessee.

With two rolls of quarters and a roll of dimes given to him by his mother for gas money, Campbell barely made it into town. Starting in 2002, the young hopeful would spend the next several years paying his dues the old fashioned way. 

A demo singer by day and Lower Broadway gigger by night, Campbell was eventually connected to a soon to be signed artist who needed a keyboard player. He and fellow South Georgia native Luke Bryan hit it off and Campbell got the job. A year and a half long keyboard stint with Tracy Byrd soon followed, and on his non travel days, he took over as bandleader down at The Stage on Tuesday nights. His smooth chops and hot blooded stage presence soon caught the eye of industry execs and in 2009, Campbell signed with Bigger Picture Group.

His first single, the sentimental ballad “Family Man”, hit the top 15 on Billboard’s Country Airplay Chart in 2011. “Outta My Head” also cracked the top 15, while the catchy tune “Fish” garnered more than 10 million on demand streams. His 2014 breakout hit “Keep Them Kisses Comin’” was on its way up the charts when Campbell got the unexpected call that after two albums and a string of hits, Bigger Picture had closed. 

However, Campbell and his devoted team continued to press radio stations around the country, so much so that the single ended an impressive run well inside the Top 10, which is unheard of for a song with no financial backing.

Another door opened for Campbell in the form of Red Bow Records, a division of the Broken Bow umbrella. “Tomorrow Tonight” made it into the top 40, followed by perhaps his most poignant and well known work to date, “Outskirts of Heaven.” “Outskirts” took on a life of its own, showcasing Campbell’s vulnerability and deep rooted faith. The uplifting and remarkably personal ballad was praised by&nbsp;Rolling Stoneand&nbsp;Taste of Country, among others.

The impact of “Outskirts” prompted media appearances and memorable performances at nationally televised NFL games, the TODAY show, CMA Fest, and the Grand Ole Opry, the latter of which he has made over 50 appearances to date. And in a full circle moment, the down home Georgia boy reunited with buddy Luke Bryan on his highly successful 2017 Huntin’, Fishin’, and Lovin’ Every Day Tour.

In the summer of 2018, Campbell released his first new music in five years with his “See You Try” EP on Broken Bow. The title track became an instant crowd pleaser with its confident, flirty lyrics and boot stompin’ melody. The EP also found a home for both an electric and acoustic version of “Outskirts of Heaven.” But by August of 2018, Campbell and Broken Bow had mutually parted ways, leaving the door wide open for a long awaited, yet nearly missed opportunity.
