The Wichita National Weather Service predicts that much of central and southeast Kansas will experience a wintery mix of weather this weekend.

According to Wichita National Service meteorologist Eric Metzger, it would be the fifth year this part of the state sees winter weather during late October.

Metzger said that there is a 60% chance that Salinans will see winter weather this weekend.

"With a cold shot like this, with temperatures dropping as fast as they are, the main issue will be bridges and elevated surfaces," Metzger said. "So they will freeze, and they'll freeze quickly."

Most roads won't freeze this weekend due to residual ground heat from warmer days in the season — Metzger said there still may be icy spots from the expected snow and rain mix.

Slowing down on slick roads is recommended to stay safe while driving in adverse weather.

"Once they come up to a bridge, an elevated overpass, or anything like that, they need to slow down and take the foot off the gas," Metzger said. "So long as power is not going to the wheels, you really help yourself out on being able to maintain traction. But that's not a guarantee. If you hit a good slug of ice, even if you're coasting, you can still slide."

NWS Meteorologist predicts winter mix for Salina region this weekend

Most of central Kansas saw inches of rainfall Wednesday, Oct. 25, with some regions of Kansas receiving almost eight inches.

The Salina region topped at 1.8 inches of rain in Marion and Assaria, but Emporia received almost eight inches of rain and parts of southwest Osage County got 9.35 inches.&nbsp;

The Salina Regional Airport reported 0.28 inches this morning, with more showers expected for tomorrow.

NWS Wichita: Mild weather continues, midweek forecast

Over the weekend, Kansas saw low temperatures dipping from mid-40s to upper 20s this morning in towns across the western half of the state.

The frosty temperatures paired up with breezy weather caused most Kansans to reach for winter coats and gloves, but the rest of the week will see warmer temperatures.

"There'll be one more (frost), and that'll be Tuesday morning," said Wichita National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Baerg. "Lows are expected to reach the mid-30s, but beyond that for the rest of the week, morning lows are in the 40s to near 50."

After chilly mornings, NWS predicts day-time temperatures this week to rise to around the mid-70s, climbing later in the week to the upper-70s.

NWS- Four Day forecast, warmer this week

Only portions of Kansas will see the ring of fire eclipse tomorrow morning, with cloud cover predicted for most of the state's northeast corner.

Wichita National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Kleinsasser said from Goodland to Wichita, much of the state will only see cloud cover on Saturday morning.

"We have clouds coming in this morning — they'll be around all day," Kleinsasser said. "They might clear up for a bit tonight, but then those clouds come back, and it looks like tomorrow morning, they will be hanging around a good part of the day."

According to NASA's <a href="https://eclipse-explorer.smce.nasa.gov/">2023 Eclipse Explorer</a>, Kansans may see anywhere from most of the annular eclipse to about 60% to 65% of the stellar event.

With weather permitting, residents would see the eclipse beginning in Kansas around 10:30 a.m., hitting its maximum at 11:45 a.m. and ending by 1:16 p.m.

Kleinsasser said portions of the southwest part of Kansas have a good chance to see the eclipse Saturday, though, with models predicting little-to-no cloud coverage for towns like Dodge City and Liberal.

"Southwest half, especially as you get to Western and southwest Kansas, it looks like skies should be mostly sunny," Kleinsasser said.

For the rest of the weekend, Sunday's predicted weather will be in the 60s and sunny.

Many Kansans will miss tomorrow's eclipse due to predicted cloud cover

Strong NW winds lead to very high fire danger across central Kansas

As the air grows chillier, the chance for severe weather remains — north-central Kansas will likely see heavy rain, wind gusts of about 60 mph, and possibly a tornado on Thursday afternoon and evening.

The <a href="https://www.weather.gov/ict/">Wichita National Weather Service</a> also reported a chance of hail on Thursday and warned residents of the Kansas-Nebraska state line to be weary.

NWS meteorologist Eric Metzger said residents in the state's north-central region should prepare their storm-safe rooms and check their storm-warning systems for the end of this week.

"Some people, myself included, when winter comes along, my safe place is often occupied with storage," Metzger said. "(Residents) need to make sure that they have multiple ways to receive warnings. Whether it be the weather radio, your phone, television, or whatever, just keep an eye out."

Metzger said the current predictions indicate this storm will produce low-level shear, which occurs when wind speed and direction change rapidly low to the ground — often an ingredient for tornadoes.

If predictions of this storm continue in the weather outlook, Metzger said the event will likely look like a familiar Kansas summer storm, beginning as isolated pockets and turning to a squall line over the rest of the state.

Those isolated pockets of storms are where most tornadic activity happens in a storm, with the squall line often causing straight-line wind damage instead.

"The little discreet cells that are by themselves, those are the ones that tend to produce the big tornadoes — Andover was an example of that, Hesston was an example of that, and Greensburg too," Metzger said. "But the environment, even if we get those discrete elements, I don't see the environment necessary to produce a tornado of that strength."

If necessary, the Storm Prediction Center will produce a thunderstorm watch over the next few days, warning residents to be alert. The Wichita NWS has thunderstorm warnings in discreet locations during the storm, which would indicate taking shelter from weather conditions.

Metzger stressed the need to prepare for severe weather, especially after prediction centers issue watches or warnings.

"The way it should be viewed is that once the watch comes out, it's game on — it's time to pay attention," Metzger said. "When we punched the warning, it's here, and if you have an action plan, you execute it.

Wichita meteorologist predicts severe weather for north-central Kansas tonight

On this day back in 2016, an unseasonably warm, moist airmass was in place across the southern and central Plains on Thursday, Oct. 6. 

Storms developed along a cold front that surged east across the state. A supercell thunderstorm developed along this feature and produced two tornadoes in eastern Saline County.

The first tornado to touch down that day did so at 4:14 p.m. just north of East Mentor Road in southeast Saline County, where it destroyed a barn and some trees.

The EF-2 twister reached windspeeds of 112 mph and traveled for a quarter of a mile. There were no recorded injuries or deaths.

A second tornado touched down shortly after at 4:20 p.m. just east of Salina near the town of Solomon. It destroyed a manufactured home in the countryside, lifting it off its foundation and spreading debris.

This EF-3 tornado reached estimated windspeeds of 140 mph, stretching its path to more than six miles when it traveled from south of East Magnolia Road to north of East Country Club Road.

There were no deaths or injuries during this tornadic event.&nbsp;

In addition to the tornadoes, numerous storms resulted in very heavy rain across mainly southeast Kansas, causing flash flooding and river flooding. Several water rescues were performed, along with flooded homes in Allen County.&nbsp;

This Day in Weather History — Fall tornadoes hit Saline County

As the days grow shorter, most plant and garden owners begin to turn toward meteorologists to see when they may have to bring plants inside or cover their gardens to protect from frosty temperatures.

This year, according to the Wichita National Weather Service, Salina and surrounding communities in northern Kansas will likely see the first frost this weekend.

"The northern two-thirds have a really good chance, with even northwest Kansas and northern Kansas having a potential freeze," said Wichita NWS meteorologist Christian Williams. 

The predicted temperatures for Salina on Friday evening dip into the low 30s, with some regions of Saline County seeing temperatures dip into the mid-20s.

Most of the northern portion of the state received freeze warnings, including Jewell, Republic, Washington, Rooks, Osborne, Mitchell and Cloud counties. Many parts of central Kansas received frost warnings, including Saline, Dickinson, Ottawa, Russell, Lincoln, McPherson, Ellsworth, Rice and Marion counties.

According to the National Weather Service, these warnings begin at 3 a.m. Saturday Morning, lasting until around 9 a.m.

With lower temperatures, Williams said most plant and animal owners must take precautions this weekend by bringing temperature-sensitive plants and animals inside or into a building.

K-State Research and Extension horticulture agent Jason Graves said an essential factor in protecting flowerbeds, gardens and other plants is knowing the limitations of each plant.

"The big thing is to understand the cold tolerance of the plants you're working with so that you can make decisions based on your goals," Williams said. "Getting to know the hardiness of the plants you're working with and what they can tolerate and not tolerate is critical."

Each plant has a hardiness level showing what temperatures would cause damage for the varying plants across Kansas. Graves said tropical house plants and many flowers cannot survive colder conditions.

K-State Research and Extension offers <a href="https://www.centralkansas.k-state.edu/lawn-garden/">multiple tools</a> for plant owners to know the hardiness of their plants and what they may need through the state's colder months.

Graves said frosty temperatures would significantly damage summer vegetables like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, while hardier plants like beets, radishes and spinach would not be as damaged by the first or second frost of the year.

"Plants are all going to have different needs depending on how much cold tolerance they have and what part of the plant we're trying to save," Graves said. "Some of them we have to dig up and bring into the garage or into the basement to preserve and replant, and the following year."

Graves said tropical house plants and many flowers cannot survive colder conditions.K-State Research and Extension offers <a href="https://www.centralkansas.k-state.edu/lawn-garden/">multiple tools</a> for plant owners to know the hardiness of their plants and what they may need through the state's colder months.Graves said frosty temperatures would significantly damage summer vegetables like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, while hardier plants like beets, radishes and spinach would not be as damaged by the first or second frost of the year."Plants are all going to have different needs depending on how much cold tolerance they have and what part of the plant we're trying to save," Graves said. "Some of them we have to dig up and bring into the garage or into the basement to preserve and replant, and the following year."

NWS: Severe Storms possible Tuesday, Fall-like weather weekend forecast

Since January this year, parts of western Kansas received almost 16 inches of above-normal precipitation, including towns like Liberal, Dodge City and Goodland.

These rains took some pressure off places like Garden City, which had the dryest year on record last year, and according to the Kansas Geological Survey, its conditions rivaled the Dust Bowl in the 1930s.

Water data manager Brownie Wilson said the rainfall greatly removed stress from groundwater use.

"When it rains or doesn't rain, it really determines how much groundwater is pumped or not," Wilson said.&nbsp;

Wilson said the extra precipitation decreased the pumping demands of farming operations, but due to Kansas' geology, it did not cause much aquifer recharge.

Over the High Plains Aquifer system in the West, which includes the Ogallala,&nbsp;Great Bend, and Equus Beds aquifers, the rock beds are deep and challenging to reach for most precipitation.

Significant precipitation events may not recharge the aquifers in western Kansas but decrease the groundwater system's decline.

"South-central Kansas, however, does tend to recharge a lot more than water tables closer to the land surface, and it's very sandy," Wilson said. "So those areas can actually get beneficial recharge from big precipitation events."

The aquifer is close to the surface in south-central Kansas. The aquifer is less than 100 feet from the surface in some areas.&nbsp;

Although the rain is welcome in western Kansas, most south-central and southeast Kansas received below-normal rainfall.&nbsp;

This year's regions impacted the most include Hutchinson, Emporia and almost 16 inches below-normal rainfall in Coffeyville and Chanute.

According to Wichita National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Katcham, south-central and southeastern Kansas will continue to see dry conditions. 

"We're in a dry period again, unfortunately," Katcham said. "In the short term, dry conditions with low relative humidities lead to increased elevated fire risk."

Katcham stressed the importance of fire risk during dry periods, with a chance of very high or extreme fire danger as Kansas sees high wind speeds through the fall.

Salina and the surrounding region expect temperatures to remain around the mid-80s, with scattered rain and thunderstorms in the evenings for the next two weeks.

The most significant chance for thunderstorms will be Thursday night, with a %60 chance for precipitation in the Salina area. 

The Wichita National Weather Service predicted a chance of showers and thunderstorms late Thursday afternoon and evening, but after 1 a.m., Salina will likely receive showers and a thunderstorm.

Friday afternoon and evening have a %30 chance of thunderstorms, with the Wichita NWS stating storms will likely occur before 1 a.m. Friday night.

Low temperatures will remain around the mid-60s throughout the week and dip to the mid-50s over the weekend, staying there throughout the beginning of next week. 

High temperatures will sink to the low-80s by Sunday afternoon after a high of 88 on Saturday afternoon.

NWS predicts storms for most of the state, severe chances for the Kansas

As ocean surface temperatures shift, it could change Kansas's winter normals throughout its core months.

This week, the Wichita National Weather Service predicted that southern portions of Kansas will receive rain and possibly a few scattered thunderstorms.

NWS meteorologist Kevin Darmofal said as fall continues, the state may receive above-normal amounts of precipitation.

"It looks like there's a better-than-average chance that we may be seeing above-normal precipitation as we go through the fall and maybe the very beginning of meteorological winter (December 1)," Darmofal said.

As winter approaches, the impact of the El Niño weather pattern will begin to affect most of the United States, usually meaning below-normal precipitation and temperatures.

As El Niño shifts from La Niña, ocean surface temperatures change in the eastern tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean. El Niño is the warming of those surface waters.

Darmofal described this weather pattern as affecting the two jet streams that encompass most of the U.S., the Polar and Subtropical Jetstreams. 

This change in the jetstreams typically looks like the Subtropical and Polar Jetstreams dipping south, bringing cold, dry air to the central portion of the U.S.

Occasionally, during El Niño phases, the Subtropical Jetstream can "stick" further north, bringing wetter air to Kansas and other midwestern states.

"If it does average a little colder and a little below normal, we can still have some pretty mild days, and we could get a big snowstorm in there, too," Darmofal said.

Although most residents welcome a break from triple-digit temperatures, according to Wichita National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Katcham, it likely will not bring the state out of drought conditions through the winter.

"When you get a drought like this, it's a slow process," Katcham said. "You don't get out of a drought just because you have a week of steady rain, showers and thunderstorms; it takes a while."

Katcham said it would likely require two to four weeks of steady rainfall to escape severe or extreme drought conditions — unlikely throughout the Kansas winter.

Katcham said the NWS suspects the winter season will begin with below-normal precipitation alongside above-normal temperatures.

"For the further, three-month outlook, (national NWS centers) are talking about seasonal normals," Katcham said. "Which doesn't bode well for helping out drought conditions."
