NWS-Wichita four day weather forecast, last spring freeze date

After thunderstorms and a few tornadoes struck the central and northeast parts of Kansas, mild weather is expected for most residents over the weekend.

The National Weather Service Topeka forecasted calmer weather for the rest of the week and weekend. 

Northern Kansas has a chance for more rain today, but forecasters suspect sunshine to return soon alongside slightly cooler temperatures in the mid-50s to mid-60s.

Three-Day weather forecast — sunshine expected through the weekend

A significant weather system is set to develop around Salina today, which could bring strong winds, large hail and even a tornado.

Yesterday, the Wichita National Weather Service reported that some thunderstorms and rain would likely reach Salina. Still, with some updated models from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Storm Prediction Center, meteorologists and storm chasers are on high alert for today's system.

According to Wichita NWS Meteorologist Mickey McGuire, storms may develop along a warm front along the state's central region. Once it reaches Salina, it will likely intensify and travel across the eastern half of Kansas.

"I think after 4 p.m., we will see increasing chances for storms to develop along that warm front as we progress through the evening hours," McGuire said. "[Then the storms will] move north and east, so that puts the best chance for severe thunderstorms across northeast Kansas."

"Any location along that warm front will have a chance of seeing severe storms, large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes, which will also be possible with any storms that develop along that front."

With the looming potential for severe weather, McGuire encouraged residents to alter outdoor activities or plans and be aware of impending dangerous conditions.

Meteorologists at the Wichita NWS also advise that residents have two or more ways to receive weather information, such as a phone, television or weather radio, to stay safe.

Multiple storm systems will move through the state late tonight and tomorrow, with tomorrow bringing chances of damaging winds and hail.

According to the Wichita National Weather Service, far eastern Kansas may get a few showers this evening, and more of the east half of the state will see severe weather tomorrow.

"We'll see another system that kind of moves in right on the heels of this system tomorrow," said Wichita NWS Meteorologist Mickey McGuire. I think tomorrow's storm brings a little bit better chance of severe storms."

McGuire said although the systems will move through the state, many weather predictions show low probabilities for severe weather or widespread rain showers.

This doesn't rule out the threat of large hail, 60-mph wind gusts or tornadoes for this system.

"I think the main threat would be the potential for some large hail, maybe damaging winds with any severe storm that does develop," McGuire said.

McGuire encourages residents to make alternate plans for outdoor activities, especially for those in northern and northeast Kansas where there are greater chances for severe weather.

UPDATED: Severe weather moving into Kansas, Salina at front of dangerous system

Most Kansans understand that March usually brings spring closer to the end of the month, but with record-setting warm temperatures in February, spring has arrived for most residents.

Climatologists in and around Kansas also agree that this year is different for most of the country, with the <a href="https://www.weather.gov/fwd/basics">El Niño-Southern Oscillation</a>, or ENSO, cycle transitioning throughout spring and into summer.

The ENSO cycle has two phases that impact sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean — El Niño, the ENSO warm phase, and La Niña, the ENSO cold phase.&nbsp;

The cycle transitioned from a three-year intense La Niña phase into a robust El Niño late last year, but climatologists see a transition to a neutral phase into a La Niña for the summer.

"This winter played out like a classic El Niño. We were much above normal [temperatures] and had above-normal precipitation—that's the hallmark of El Niño," said K-State Research and Extension Assistant State Climatologist Matthew Sittel. The problem this time of year is that the signal is less obvious."

<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/35349d6a-eaa2-422b-976d-f0587f19c3bc">Salina broke an 1896 record on Feb. 26</a>, with the Salina Regional Airport reporting 78 degrees in the afternoon. The drought also improved, with many areas of western Kansas seeing soaking rainfall and inches of snow throughout the 2023-2024 winter.

ENSO cycles impact Kansas the most in winter, so as spring rolls into summer and El Niño switches to neutral and later to La Niña, its effects will not be as noticeable.

As the cycle transitions through the front half of 2024, Kansas weather will still see some impacts, particularly during the severe weather season.

"Coming out of El Niño, going into neutral, especially heading into severe weather season, it can create some uncertainty," said High Plains Regional Climate Center Climatologist Gannon Rush. "I looked up some literature about scenarios like this where it's transitioning from one to the neutral back to the other, and it did hint toward a not stronger, but more active severe season, particularly for hail and tornadoes."&nbsp;

Though past years with similar conditions saw more intense storm seasons, more tornadoes and hail are never guaranteed.

Wichita <a href="https://www.weather.gov/">National Weather Service</a>, or NWS, Meteorologist Robb Lawson said Kansas will see severe weather regardless of the ENSO cycle. Still, while the La Niña cycle held in the Pacific, Kansas saw a below-normal rate of tornadoes in the last several years.

"Some areas of the country get more active in a given year, and it just moves around," Lawson said. "Eventually, it will return to where we're going to be above normal for tornadoes. It's been relatively quiet for the last several years, but eventually, it will change, and we don't know when."

Meteorologists focus primarily on short weather outlooks, air moisture levels, wind speeds, and atmospheric instability. These factors impact weather forecasts and change regularly in the days leading up to a significant weather event.

Rush said many climate predictions see chances for above-normal precipitation in Kansas for the beginning of spring from March to early or mid-April.

However, late spring and early summer are less promising for precipitation in the state. Many climate models show a toss-up in the early summertime for rainfall, and when La Niña takes over, it will likely turn dry again for the later half of the year.

"There's not a strong signal on how they affect temperature and precipitation during the summer," Rush said. "As we've seen in the past, the triple dip in La Niña was very dry. The drought was very prevalent in Kansas, specifically in central and western Kansas, and this year it's sort of signaling that kind of return of a pattern which is probably not what people want to hear."

The recent conditions also have led to an early spring for many states, with the <a href="https://www.usanpn.org/data/maps/spring">National Phenology Network</a> reporting the earliest spring on record for parts of northern Kansas.

Climatologists from around the globe work to gather data for varying models, but none are entirely accurate in predictions.&nbsp;

Lawson said weather on all scales is unpredictable, but historical data and taking a critical look at weather conditions allow residents to better prepare for dangerous weather situations.

Spring ahead of schedule in Kansas — climatologists uncertain for severe weather season

Not seeing precipitation totals from your area after a rain or snow event? Consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.

"CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

NWS Wichita four day weather forecast

Cities across the state face an elevated risk of wildfires today due to extreme temperatures and high winds for this early in the year.

For Salina, yesterday's temperatures broke the 1896 record of 78 degrees by 2:34 p.m., and by 2:53 p.m., Salina Municipal Airport reported 81 degrees for the city.

"We were nearly 30 degrees above that yesterday, and we will be below that tomorrow," said Wichita National Weather Service Meteorologist Kelly Butler. "We have a high right now for 46 [on Wednesday]."

According to Butler, the record-high temperatures mixed with the winds of a cold front coming through north central Kansas made a recipe for dangerous wildfire conditions.

In town, forecasts show the temperature dropping to the mid-40s by this evening, with possible windchills in the single digits tomorrow morning.

"We're going to have rapidly dropping dew points likely as well, so we're still expecting a fire threat up there in Salina," Butler said. "You want to definitely be really careful with any open flames or anything that might cause a spark — cigarette butts, chains hanging down from a vehicle, anything like that."

Many performed prescribed burns yesterday due to the favorable weather conditions, light winds and warm air temperatures. 

With today's high winds and 20- to 30-degree temperature departures from usual, Butler said some prescribed burns may rekindle into uncontrolled wildfires.

"In Kansas, people need to burn parts of their land for good reason, and there's only a certain number of days a year where that's a good time to do it," Butler said. "They know they won't be able to do it the next day."

 </figure>By OLIVIA BERGMEIER Salina PostCities across the state face an elevated risk of wildfires today due to extreme temperatures and high winds for this early in the year.For Salina, yesterday's temperatures broke the 1896 record of 78 degrees by 2:34 p.m., and by 2:53 p.m., Salina Municipal Airport reported 81 degrees for the city."We were nearly 30 degrees above that yesterday, and we will be below that tomorrow," said Wichita National Weather Service Meteorologist Kelly Butler. "We have a high right now for 46 [on Wednesday]."<figure>

 </figure>According to Butler, the record-high temperatures mixed with the winds of a cold front coming through north central Kansas made a recipe for dangerous wildfire conditions.In town, forecasts show the temperature dropping to the mid-40s by this evening, with possible windchills in the single digits tomorrow morning."We're going to have rapidly dropping dew points likely as well, so we're still expecting a fire threat up there in Salina," Butler said. "You want to definitely be really careful with any open flames or anything that might cause a spark — cigarette butts, chains hanging down from a vehicle, anything like that."Many performed prescribed burns yesterday due to the favorable weather conditions, light winds and warm air temperatures. With today's high winds and 20- to 30-degree temperature departures from usual, Butler said some prescribed burns may rekindle into uncontrolled wildfires."In Kansas, people need to burn parts of their land for good reason, and there's only a certain number of days a year where that's a good time to do it," Butler said. NWS meteorologist warns about extreme fire danger after Salina breaks 1896 high-temp record

Spring often greets Kansas yearly with powerful storms, sending meteorologists on the road while residents take shelter indoors.&nbsp;

Many Kansans become accustomed to severe weather, but at Storm Fury on the Plains, National Weather Service meteorologists Robb Lawson and Kevin Darmofal reminded residents of how dangerous severe weather can be.

"You need to take it seriously; that's what we try to impart to people, especially here," Darmofal said. "It never happens to you until it does, and when it does, it's very tragic."

Storm Fury on the Plains held its first seminar this year at Kansas Wesleyan University Peters Science Hall, beginning a string of 25 different presentation locations across the state.

Lawson opened the presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 6, with varying storm structures, from squall line storms to photogenic supercells.

Squall lines are long lines of storms that often host dangerous wind gusts and hail, while supercells are isolated, rotating storms that regularly produce tornadoes and downpours of rain and hail.

In the presentation, Lawson pointed out various parts of a supercell and how to gauge its severity based on visual information and radar scanning.

As many residents and seasoned storm spotters listened in the audience, one attendee sat eager to learn more about something that scared him.

Rachael Walker and her 6-year-old son, Jaxson Walker, attended the presentation to learn more about storm safety and some new information about powerful storms.

Jaxson Walker once feared storms, but in recent years, he's learned more about severe weather, and now, according to Rachael Walker, it's become a significant interest in his life and something he strives to learn about.

"Especially when we have that fear, I feel like knowledge is power," Rachael Walker said. "I feel like that helps a lot with not being as fearful and just learning about stuff."

Once Jaxson learned more about severe weather, Rachael Walker said he grew confident about protecting himself during a storm and what to look for in the future.

When a powerful storm hits, Rachael Walker said she and her family enjoy taking quick looks out the window to view the squall, and once it's safe, they often venture out to look for rainbows.

Rachael Walker homeschools Jaxson and his two sisters, so teaching about storm safety became essential in the at-home classroom.

Storm Fury on the Plains only reinforced Rachael Walker's teachings at home, with Darmofal stating that knowing about powerful storms leads to safer decisions while looking for safety.

"Know what to do, have a plan, and have that plan in advance, not waiting until the last minute, then you have multiple ways to receive weather information and warnings," Darmofal said. "Those are probably going to keep people safe."

An essential factor that weaved through the presentation for experienced storm chasers and residents was keeping two or more avenues to receive severe weather information.&nbsp;

Darmofal and Lawson stated the importance of having a weather radio on hand, alongside any other source for information, including a smartphone, another radio, or television.

The Saline County Emergency Management team helped facilitate the presentation in Peters Science Hall. The County Public Information Officer, Melissa McCoy, shared easy ways to remember critical storm safety tips.

"When the thunder roars, get indoors. Turn around, don't drown," McCoy said. "Number one, we want people to be safe."

Storm Fury on the Plains will continue its presentations across the state, teaching storm spotters new information on technologies or reporting techniques while informing everyday citizens on how to stay safe during severe storms.

Storm Fury on the Plains presents critical storm safety information

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Wind Advisory for Wednesday for south winds sustained from 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph over portions of Central and South Central Kansas from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday to midnight

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Small tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Hang onto the steering wheel tight if traveling on east west roads.

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

A prolonged period of widespread rain and embedded thunderstorms will impact the region this evening through Sunday. Locally heavy rainfall may support areas of minor low-land flooding. Pea-size hail and gusty winds are possible this evening.

Despite the month ending on a warm note, much of the region still averaged colder than normal for the month. In fact, Wichita experienced it's coldest January since 1996, Salina since 1985, and Russell since 1993.

Freezing cold temperatures, light snow — NWS Monday Forecast

After rounds of snow across the state, multiple bouts of arctic air will impact most Kansans this weekend and early next week, with windchills in the 20s below zero.

Wichita National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Jakub said temperatures will fall dangerously low Friday evening and Saturday morning, following that pattern through Tuesday morning.

"A daytime high of around five degrees on Saturday, a high of two degrees on Sunday, Monday, four degrees, so we're going to have low single-digit highs," Jakub said. "We're going to be setting some records with this."

According to Jakub, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, all have chances to break records from as far back as 1909.

Alongside the frigid conditions, windchills will dip to around 20 below zero throughout the weekend, lasting until Tuesday afternoon.

These conditions can become deadly — Jakub said that only 30 minutes of skin exposure to the cold can cause frostbite and hypothermia for those venturing outside.

Jakub recommended that staying indoors is the safest place for residents, but this weekend can become deadly for those stranded outside.

Forecasted flurries of snow will also move into Kansas alongside the frigid temperatures.

Many Salinans either live without a home or become stranded outside during harsh winter conditions, causing frostbite, hypothermia and sometimes death.&nbsp;

Due to this, Saline County Emergency Management created an <a href="https://www.salinecountyks.gov/alerts">information hub</a> for all Salinans in need.&nbsp;

"We have a banner on the County website that lists all the weather updates and all of our resources that are available for any condition that might come out of a winter storm," said Saline County Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis. "If you need places to go, they're listed — same-day shelters and their hours."

Often, winter weather causes power outages in neighborhoods across Saline County, plunging homes into dangerous conditions for children or senior residents.

"Be a good neighbor and check on your friends," Weis said. "If you're out of power... the mall is always a great place to just hang out, walk around and burn a couple hours, and it's free."

Weis mentioned a few other community locations and services but stressed that finding somewhere warm to go is critical.

In Salina, some community resources for individuals and families in need include the Salina Salvation Army, the Salina Grace Foundation and the Ashby House.

Ashby House serves women, families and children challenged by poverty by offering various programs — from emergency housing to financial and employment coaching.

Ashby House Executive Director Darrell Burgoon said the current Ashby House emergency and transitional shelters have very limited space but have plans to triple that capacity in the next few years.&nbsp;

In the fall of 2019, Ashby House began a project for a new emergency shelter made from a residential home, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all progress halted until recently.

&nbsp;"From the minute that I got hired a year and a half ago it was my goal to get that thing finished," Burgoon said. "So we hope to complete that house by this summer."

The house would have enough space for 22 adults and numerous children with an expansive basement.

Burgoon said even though the Ashby House's emergency shelter may have little availability, staff will help residents who visit them for help by directing them to other community resources.

 </figure>By OLIVIA BERGMEIER Salina PostAfter rounds of snow across the state, multiple bouts of arctic air will impact most Kansans this weekend and early next week, with windchills in the 20s below zero.Wichita National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Jakub said temperatures will fall dangerously low Friday evening and Saturday morning, following that pattern through Tuesday morning.<figure>

 </figure>"A daytime high of around five degrees on Saturday, a high of two degrees on Sunday, Monday, four degrees, so we're going to have low single-digit highs," Jakub said. "We're going to be setting some records with this."According to Jakub, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, all have chances to break records from as far back as 1909.Alongside the frigid conditions, windchills will dip to around 20 below zero throughout the weekend, lasting until Tuesday afternoon.These conditions can become deadly — Jakub said that only 30 minutes of skin exposure to the cold can cause frostbite and hypothermia for those venturing outside.Jakub recommended that staying indoors is the safest place for residents, but this weekend can become deadly for those stranded outside.Forecasted flurries of snow will also move into Kansas alongside the frigid temperatures.<h2>Salina-area resources for those in need</h2>Many Salinans either live without a home or become stranded outside during harsh winter conditions, causing frostbite, hypothermia and sometimes death.&nbsp;Due to this, Saline County Emergency Management created an <a href="https://www.salinecountyks.gov/alerts">information hub</a> for all Salinans in need.&nbsp;"We have a banner on the County website that lists all the weather updates and all of our resources that are available for any condition that might come out of a winter storm," said Saline County Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis. "If you need places to go, they're listed — same-day shelters and their hours."Often, winter weather causes power outages in neighborhoods across Saline County, plunging homes into dangerous conditions for children or senior residents."Be a good neighbor and check on your friends," Weis said. "If you're out of power... the mall is always a great place to just hang out, walk around and burn a couple hours, and it's free."<figure>

 </figure>Weis mentioned a few other community locations and services but stressed that finding somewhere warm to go is critical.In Salina, some community resources for individuals and families in need include the Salina Salvation Army, the Salina Grace Foundation and the Ashby House.Ashby House serves women, families and children challenged by poverty by offering various programs — from emergency housing to financial and employment coaching.Ashby House Executive Director Darrell Burgoon said the current Ashby House emergency and transitional shelters have very limited space but have plans to triple that capacity in the next few years.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>In the fall of 2019, Ashby House began a project for a new emergency shelter made from a residential home, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all progress halted until recently.&nbsp;"From the minute that I got hired a year and a half ago it was my goal to get that thing finished," Burgoon said. NWS meteorologist forecasts record-breaking low temperatures ahead for Salina

About&nbsp;11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12 the Kansas Department of Transportation has reopened K-28 from Jewell to Concordia and K-148 from Jewell to U.S. 81.&nbsp;

KDOT reminds motorists to drive with caution and give crews room to work as they continue to clear the roadways. Some highways remain closed due to drifting snow and dangerous winter weather;&nbsp;K-9 closed from Concordia to Beloit in Mitchell and Cloud counties and K-148 closed from U.S. 81 to K-15.

Travelers are cautioned not to drive around employees, signs and gates marking these closed highways. Doing so may result in a citation or fine.

UPDATED: Winter weather closes highways in north central Kansas

All highways in north central Kansas have been reopened following the recent winter storm, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Some highway closures were necessary due to so many vehicles sliding off the roadways or being stranded on the road. KDOT reminds motorists to drive with caution and give crews room to work as they continue to clear the roadways. Winds are causing snow to blow back and drift on highways, and some areas may be snow packed or icy.

Another round of winter weather is expected later this week. Motorists are encouraged to stay up to date with road conditions and prepare for the incoming weather.

The "Emergency Accident Reporting Plan" has been implemented due to severe weather and/or hazardous driving conditions as the number of motor vehicle accidents exceeds the Department's ability to respond in a timely manner.

Eligible accidents: Any non-hit and run, non-personal injury motor vehicle accident that does not require towing, and does not involve alcohol or drugs.

Driver requirements: Exchange personal information with the other drivers) involved or property owner.

Complete an Emergency Accident Reporting Plan accident report form as completely as possible and mail or deliver the completed report to the Salina Police Department within 48 hours. SPD enacts emergency accident reporting plan

Even though Friday's snow just settled across most of the western two-thirds of the state, another chilly storm is on its heels, with possible whiteout conditions for early next week.

According to Wichita National Weather Service Meteorologist Venessa Pearce, the weather system will impact most of Kansas, beginning as rain showers on Sunday with temperatures in the low 40s.

Rain showers will continue on Monday before transitioning to a winter weather mix that will impact the northwestern half of Kansas.

Then, during the later hours of Monday night, the storm system will transition from rain to heavy snow, with possible blizzard conditions for north central Kansas and western Kansas.

"The worst part of the timeframe is Monday evening and Monday night into Tuesday morning," Pearce said. "There could be some potential challenges on the Tuesday morning commute."

Another Wichita NWS meteorologist, James Cuellar, provided a forecast earlier in the week on Wednesday, Jan. 3.&nbsp;

 </figure>"It'll be a completely different, completely new system," Cuellar said. "It's going to be a little bit different — it'll have a lot more moisture. That's going to be the most significant difference."By Saturday morning, NWS forecasters found another significant impact from the storm in its models — high windspeeds early Tuesday morning with a single-digit windchill."Most of the precipitation should exit by Tuesday morning," Pearce said. "But, because we expect winds with sustained speeds of 25 to 30 mph with gusts approaching 45 mph, any fallen snow could drift and blow around on Tuesday.""We've got wind chills on Tuesday morning in the single digits, around five degrees."Pearce stressed that with the hazardous conditions on Monday and Tuesday, residents prepare by altering schedules and packing supplies when necessary to travel.Critical travel supplies for the car include a thick winter coat, snow boots, water, small food items and extra clothing items."Make sure to stay tuned to the latest forecast as things change," Pearce said. "Consider adjusting different plans for that time if at all possible."<h2>Friday morning snow totals:</h2>Friday morning's snowstorm brought Kansas another round of multiple inches of snow.&nbsp;According to Wichita NWS, the Wichita Dwight D.
