NWS-Wichita three day weather forecast

A multi-day triple-digit heat wave is moving toward Kansas early this week, bringing a possible 108-degree heat index to Salina on Tuesday.

U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita) forecasters predict a significant heat wave will impact Kansas after setting record temperatures in the eastern United States.

This early-summer heat could rival previous records due to its timing in early June since heat waves occur more frequently later in the season. The hottest time of day will be from 1 to 7 p.m. each day.

NWS Wichita recommends that residents remain indoors to limit outdoor exposure during peak temperatures and stay hydrated to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

According to NWS meteorologists, this will be the peak of the heat wave, and the Plains, Mid-South and Southeast regions of the United States will see the hottest temperatures, with some places set to exceed 110 degrees.

This, paired with warm overnight temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, offers little relief from the oppressive heat for those without reliable access to air conditioning.

Dangerous heat impacts Kansas, 107-degree heat index

Kansas weekly drought update and climate report for June 12–18, 2024

The warmest temperatures so far this year were observed during the past week. The average daily temperature across the Kansas Mesonet was above normal on all seven days of the period. The 13th was the hottest day, with the statewide average high temperature reaching 99°, and over half of the Mesonet sites registering highs of at least 100°. The co-operative observer in Hays recorded a high of 110° that afternoon. This stands as not only the week’s but also the year's hottest temperature to date. Notably, this was the earliest 110° reading at Hays on record, occurring 11 days earlier than the previous record set in 2012. A few daily records were set, including Minneapolis at 105° and Beloit at 104°. Lows were mostly in the 60s, with some warmer lows in the 70s. On the 17th, every Mesonet site in the state recorded a low in the 70s, a rare occurrence last seen nearly 18 years ago on July 30, 2006. Back in 2006, there were just 14 Mesonet sites in operation versus the present count of 85 sites.

The 7-day average temperature across Kansas was 80.3°, or 6.0° above normal. All nine climate divisions were above normal, with departures ranging from +4.7° in south-central to +7.9° in both northwest and west-central Kansas. There was an average of 186 growing degree days across the state, based on Kansas Mesonet data, which is 26 above normal. Divisional totals ranged from 178 in northwest to 196 in southeast Kansas, with departures ranging from +18 in south-central to +35 in northwest Kansas. For the growing season to date, which began on April 1st, there has been an average of 1238 growing degree days in Kansas, 115 above the normal total of 1123. Departures for the growing season range from +106 in northwest to +152 in south-central Kansas. There was an average of 53 corn stress degree days during the period across the state. The average since April 1 for the state is 88. Southwest Kansas has the highest average for the growing season to date at 149, while southeast Kansas’ average is the lowest at 33.

The most significant rainfall during the period fell from the 15th into the 16th in northeast Kansas, an area that has seen multiple rounds of heavy rain in the past month. At least one CoCoRaHS observer in seven different counties measured at least two inches of rain: Morris, Geary, Riley, Marshall, Pottawatomie, Nemaha, and Jackson. The highest total for the 24-hour period ending at 7 AM on the 16th was 3.58” in Pottawatomie County southeast of Blaine. Eight additional counties in the northeast quarter of the state had at least one report of over one inch of rain. Far southeastern Kansas was the driest area of the state during the period. All CoCoRaHS observers in Montgomery, Labette, Cherokee, Neosho, Crawford, Allen, and Bourbon Counties recorded no rainfall. Other parts of the state were dry as well, but totals in these areas varied somewhat. There was only a trace of rain in both Goodland and Olathe (Johnson County Industrial), and the official total for Wichita was just 0.01”. Other low totals include Winfield (0.02”), Lawrence (0.03”), Garden City (0.07”), and Emporia (0.10”).

There was one tornado during the period, the first reported in the state this month. The tornado was sighted in Ford County near Ensign. There were 85 reports of severe hail 1” or greater in diameter during the period, with 17 reports of significant hail at least 2” in diameter. The largest hail report was 3.5” in Manhattan (Riley County) on the 13th, causing damage to buildings and vehicles on the Kansas State University campus. There were 65 reports of severe wind gusts 58 mph or higher, with eight reports at or above hurricane force (74 mph). The highest gust was 83 mph, recorded by the Kansas Mesonet tower in Seward County near Satanta on the evening of the 18th.

The statewide average precipitation for the 7-day period was 0.61”, or 62% of the weekly normal amount of 0.98”. The highest divisional total was 2.00” in northeast Kansas, followed by 1.10” in north-central Kansas. These were the only two divisions with above normal precipitation this past week. Southeast Kansas was driest at 0.08”, followed by west-central (0.29”) and northwest (0.35”) Kansas. Since April 1st, the average precipitation across Kansas is 9.01”, or 90% of the normal amount of 10.05”. The three eastern divisions remain above normal, with southeast (+1.98”) and northeast (+1.90”) Kansas the most above normal. Southwest Kansas is the driest division (5.01”), but central Kansas remains the most below normal (-2.77”). Since January 1st, the average statewide precipitation is 12.28”, 89% of normal, or a departure of –1.52”. Four divisions are above normal for the year: the three eastern divisions plus northwest Kansas. West-central Kansas fell to below normal this week (98%, down 5%). Departures for the year to date range from -3.77” in south-central Kansas to +1.45” in southeast Kansas.

The average evapotranspiration for grass across the state, based on Kansas Mesonet data, for the week was 1.90”. This is slightly above the 10-year normal (2014 to 2023) of 1.82” for the 7-day period. Divisional averages ranged from 1.65” in east-central to 2.11” in southwest Kansas. The statewide average 2” soil temperature across the Kansas Mesonet for the period was 78.4°, or 1.2° above normal.

In this week’s US Drought Monitor update, there were a few small areas with one-category improvements in parts of southwest, west-central, and north-central Kansas. These improvements resulted in towns such as Johnson City, Leoti, and Clay Center returning to drought-free status. New areas of D0 were introduced in southeast Kansas as well as on the south side of the Kansas City metropolitan area, including Lawrence and Olathe. The statewide Drought Severity and Coverage Index (DSCI) fell 2 points to 97. A total of 45% of the state is now drought-free, an increase of 2% since last week. The percentage of Kansas in D2 or worse drought status is unchanged this week at 9%.

The Weather Prediction Center’s 7-day precipitation forecast, valid for the period June 19th through the 25th, calls for below normal precipitation across most of the state. A stripe of near to slightly above normal precipitation extends from northeast to south-central Kansas, in conjunction with storms in progress at the end of the report period. Temperatures during the period are expected to average slightly above normal. The average daily high and low across Kansas for this period are 88° and 64°. Average 7-day precipitation is 0.69” in western Kansas, 0.93” in central Kansas, and 1.19” in eastern Kansas. The 8 to 14-day outlook, valid for the period June 26th through July 2nd, favors above normal temperatures statewide, with probabilities ranging from 60 to 70% across the state. There are slightly elevated chances of above normal precipitation in southeast Kansas, with near normal precipitation favored across the remainder of the state. Looking even further ahead, the outlook for the 14-day period from June 29th to July 12th suggests above normal temperatures will persist into next month, with near normal precipitation expected.

There were 85 reports of severe hail 1” or greater in diameter during the period, with 17 reports of significant hail at least 2” in diameter. The largest hail report was 3.5” in Manhattan (Riley County) on the 13th, causing damage to buildings and vehicles on the Kansas State University campus. There were 65 reports of severe wind gusts 58 mph or higher, with eight reports at or above hurricane force (74 mph). The highest gust was 83 mph, recorded by the Kansas Mesonet tower in Seward County near Satanta on the evening of the 18th.The statewide average precipitation for the 7-day period was 0.61”, or 62% of the weekly normal amount of 0.98”. The highest divisional total was 2.00” in northeast Kansas, followed by 1.10” in north-central Kansas. These were the only two divisions with above normal precipitation this past week. Southeast Kansas was driest at 0.08”, followed by west-central (0.29”) and northwest (0.35”) Kansas. Since April 1st, the average precipitation across Kansas is 9.01”, or 90% of the normal amount of 10.05”. The three eastern divisions remain above normal, with southeast (+1.98”) and northeast (+1.90”) Kansas the most above normal. Southwest Kansas is the driest division (5.01”), but central Kansas remains the most below normal (-2.77”). Since January 1st, the average statewide precipitation is 12.28”, 89% of normal, or a departure of –1.52”. Four divisions are above normal for the year: the three eastern divisions plus northwest Kansas. West-central Kansas fell to below normal this week (98%, down 5%). Departures for the year to date range from -3.77” in south-central Kansas to +1.45” in southeast Kansas.The average evapotranspiration for grass across the state, based on Kansas Mesonet data, for the week was 1.90”. This is slightly above the 10-year normal (2014 to 2023) of 1.82” for the 7-day period. Divisional averages ranged from 1.65” in east-central to 2.11” in southwest Kansas. The statewide average 2” soil temperature across the Kansas Mesonet for the period was 78.4°, or 1.2° above normal.<figure>

These improvements resulted in towns such as Johnson City, Leoti, and Clay Center returning to drought-free status. New areas of D0 were introduced in southeast Kansas as well as on the south side of the Kansas City metropolitan area, including Lawrence and Olathe. The statewide Drought Severity and Coverage Index (DSCI) fell 2 points to 97. A total of 45% of the state is now drought-free, an increase of 2% since last week. The percentage of Kansas in D2 or worse drought status is unchanged this week at 9%.The Weather Prediction Center’s 7-day precipitation forecast, valid for the period June 19th through the 25th, calls for below normal precipitation across most of the state. A stripe of near to slightly above normal precipitation extends from northeast to south-central Kansas, in conjunction with storms in progress at the end of the report period. Temperatures during the period are expected to average slightly above normal. The average daily high and low across Kansas for this period are 88° and 64°. Average 7-day precipitation is 0.69” in western Kansas, 0.93” in central Kansas, and 1.19” in eastern Kansas. The 8 to 14-day outlook, valid for the period June 26th through July 2nd, favors above normal temperatures statewide, with probabilities ranging from 60 to 70% across the state. There are slightly elevated chances of above normal precipitation in southeast Kansas, with near normal precipitation favored across the remainder of the state. Looking even further ahead, the outlook for the 14-day period from June 29th to July 12th suggests above normal temperatures will persist into next month, with near normal precipitation expected.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northeastern McPherson County and Saline County in central Kansas. The warning is in effect until 9:30 PM CDT.

At 8:55 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from near Culver to near Smolan to Lindsborg, moving east at 35 mph. The primary hazards associated with these storms include 60 mph wind gusts. The storms have been confirmed by radar.

Residents should expect potential damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Areas expected to be impacted include Salina, Lindsborg, Assaria, Gypsum, Smolan, New Cambria, Bridgeport, Salina Airport, Roxbury, and Kipp.

The National Weather Service advises all residents in the affected areas to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building for protection.

South winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 45 mph are expected in Barton, Ellsworth, Lincoln, McPherson, Rice, Russell, Saline, Harvey, and Reno Counties.

Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Severe thunderstorms moved across central Kansas on June 15 impacting several festivals in the area.&nbsp;

Storms started forming by about 3:00 p.m. The Salina Regional Airport clocked wind gust up to 77 mph at 4:08 pm. on Saturday.

At 6:41 p.m. event emcees told the crowd of thousands the show would resume at 7:30 p.m.

From cool drinks near a body of water to late-night bonfires in the backyard, one aspect of the Kansas summer remains the same: triple-digit heat indexes.

More than ten thousand residents and visitors plan to gather in Oakdale Park tomorrow for the annual Smoky Hill River Festival, but forecasters at the U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita) predict heat indices to rise well above 100 degrees.

Meteorologists predict a 107-degree heat index in Salina tomorrow afternoon, right at the beginning of the SM Hanson Festival Jam. On Wednesday, June 12, NWS Wichita meteorologists issued a heat advisory lasting until 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12.

Heat-related illnesses can vary from minor ailments, such as a heat rash, to hospitalization from heat stroke. The Kansas Department of Health Environment (KDHE) stated in its <a href="https://keap.kdhe.ks.gov/Ephtm/EphtContent/documents/Toolkit%2020140519.pdf">"Kansas Extreme Heat Toolkit"</a> that early signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, visual disturbances, weakness, anxiety, confusion and vomiting.

Those with early signs of heat exhaustion should stop any activity, relocate to a shaded or indoor area and drink electrolyte-containing fluids like sports drinks, fruit juices or water.

KDHE staff also advise that older residents or those with preexisting health concerns are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses and should take precautionary measures before attending an outdoor event during a heat advisory.

 </figure>By SALINA POSTFrom cool drinks near a body of water to late-night bonfires in the backyard, one aspect of the Kansas summer remains the same: triple-digit heat indexes.More than ten thousand residents and visitors plan to gather in Oakdale Park tomorrow for the annual Smoky Hill River Festival, but forecasters at the U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita) predict heat indices to rise well above 100 degrees.Meteorologists predict a 107-degree heat index in Salina tomorrow afternoon, right at the beginning of the SM Hanson Festival Jam. On Wednesday, June 12, NWS Wichita meteorologists issued a heat advisory lasting until 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12.<figure>

The Kansas Department of Health Environment (KDHE) stated in its <a href="https://keap.kdhe.ks.gov/Ephtm/EphtContent/documents/Toolkit%2020140519.pdf">"Kansas Extreme Heat Toolkit"</a> that early signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, visual disturbances, weakness, anxiety, confusion and vomiting.Those with early signs of heat exhaustion should stop any activity, relocate to a shaded or indoor area and drink electrolyte-containing fluids like sports drinks, fruit juices or water.KDHE staff also advise that older residents or those with preexisting health concerns are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses and should take precautionary measures before attending an outdoor event during a heat advisory.

At 5:50 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Beverly, or
 10 miles east of Lincoln, moving southeast at 20 mph.

The number of tornadoes and severe storms in the U.S. so far this year has been well above average.

There were nearly 6,300 severe storms reported in May, many concentrated in the Midwest and Great Plains,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/summary/" target="_blank">according to preliminary data</a>&nbsp;from the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. That includes more than 570 tornadoes, the most recorded in recent years. That number continues to climb as the center updates its data.

It was the second-most active May for severe storms since 2004. The most active remains May 2011, the month a massive tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri.

The storms have resulted in 39 deaths this year, according to the Storm Prediction Center. Tornadoes in Oklahoma have killed eight people and demolished homes and businesses. In Iowa, a large tornado&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tornado-iowa-wind-farm-turbines-feb9913c3d53915ffa420e277af4bb6d" target="_blank">crumbled five massive wind turbines</a>&nbsp;and killed five.

A main reason for the activity was weather conditions that made it more likely for tornadoes to form, said Patrick Marsh, the chief of science and support at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

Throughout the spring, a pocket of cold air called a “trough” put winds from the Southwest across the middle of the country, Marsh said. Winds from the Southeast carried warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico closer to the ground.

The combination created a good environment for tornado-producing storms known as supercell thunderstorms.

“We’ve had ingredients in place for supercell thunderstorms over the Plains for pretty much the entire month of May,” Marsh said. “And when you have that many of these kinds of thunderstorms, inevitably you will have an increase in tornadoes as well.”

Three tornadoes this year ranked EF4, which is the second-highest ranking on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. This spring produced higher-ranking tornadoes than in recent years, Marsh said. But, this system is also based on the amount of damage caused, rather than just the size and strength of a tornado.

“If a tornado producing wind speeds equivalent to an EF5 – so 205 miles per hour or stronger – if it never hits a structure that has an engineer rating to withstand 205 mile per hour winds, we can't assign the rating of an EF5,” Marsh said.

The increased number of tornado reports could also be due in part to more available data.

An advancement in radar technology more than a decade ago allows weather trackers to better detect weak tornadoes by radar. Plus, there are more potential eyewitnesses with cameras, thanks to smartphones, and more structures that can be in the path of a tornado.

These are all factors to consider when comparing current and historical data, said Zack Leasor, the Missouri state climatologist.

“It's really hard to disentangle, is this a greater number of tornadoes themselves? Or are there just more buildings that can be damaged by those tornadoes? Are there more people out that can see those tornadoes, report those tornadoes with their smartphones?” Leasor said. “All of these kinds of characteristics go into those trends as well.”

Quincy Vagell started storm chasing across the Midwest and Great Plains in 2014. He said he often sends reports of what he sees to the National Weather Service.

“Sometimes storm chasers may be the first people on the scene, especially if it's in a very rural area where there's not a lot of people,” he said.

The activity this season allows him to choose which storms to chase. He said he tries to stay closer to Oklahoma, where he’s based.

“I've only seen, actually, two or three tornadoes this year, but I've had an active season,” Vagell said. “I've seen plenty of supercells, great storms and all that. So it's definitely been a busy season for me.”

A more active spring season for tornadoes is difficult to link directly to climate change, according to Marsh. However, warm and moist air in the wintertime could cause more tornadoes in off-peak times, he said.

Warmer weather earlier this year has opened the door to a longer season for severe storms in Missouri, Leasor said. There have been&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2024-05-30/missouri-is-having-one-of-its-most-active-tornado-seasons-on-record-whats-behind-the-numbers" target="_blank">184 tornado warnings in the state</a>&nbsp;this year so far. This is the fourth highest number of warnings for that timeframe since records began in 1986.

Marsh expects storm activity to be calmer in early June. Beyond that, it’s more uncertain, he said.

More tornadoes reported this year than usual; a look behind numbers

Powerful supercell thunderstorms erupted along a cold front across Central Kansas during the early evening hours of Wednesday, June 11 2008. 

These storms quickly became severe as they tracked east producing several tornadoes along with extremely large hail. Tornadoes with damage were first reported across the Northeast portion of Barton County, around 8 miles north-northwest of Claflin around 6:40 p.m.

 Initial reports are that there was roof damage along with damage to rural homes and outbuildings. This same storm tracked through Ellsworth County causing damage to trees and power poles. A few hours later another intense thunderstorm developed and tracked through Saline County around 9:40 p.m. producing a tornado. This tornado moved east-northeast with a path length of about 14 miles and a maximum intensity of EF-3.

The tornado first touched down just west of I-135 and just south of the Salina Airport. 

It then traveled  along the southeast outskirts of Salina where it damaged several homes, outbuildings, trees and power lines. EF-3 damage was noted near the intersection of East Shilling Road and South Holmes Road.

The tornado continued east of Salina with some EF-2 damage near East Crawford Street and South Whitmore Road. The tornado continued northeast before crossing into Dickinson County, just south of Solomon. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries.

Along with tornadoes, these powerful storms also produced extremely large  hail, some to the size of softballs.

Storms continue tracking across western Kansas tonight, with possible wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph and quarter-sized hail, according to the U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita).

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of Kansas until 3 a.m. CDT.

U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita) meteorologists have narrowed down further details of tonight's system, with chances for severe weather&nbsp;

Numerous north-central Kansas communities received almost an inch of rain from yesterday's late-night system, and tonight, some residents could see another round of severe weather.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Storm Prediction Center (NOAA SPC), forecasters predict storms to form in western Kansas and march across the state, bringing along strong 75-85 mph west of central Kansas.

Once storms reach counties like Ellsworth, Saline, Ottawa, McPherson and neighboring communities, SPC forecasters predict a lower chance of severe winds.

Storms will likely reach the Salina area late this evening, with thunderstorm chances rising near town around midnight to 4 a.m.

Large to very large hail will be a risk with this more discrete convection. But, upscale growth into an intense bowing cluster appears likely across parts of far eastern CO into western/central KS by late afternoon/early evening as a low-level jet gradually strengthens.

Numerous severe wind gusts, some potentially significant (up to 75-85 mph), should occur with this bow through at least late evening as it moves quickly eastward over KS.

Latest guidance continues to show the greatest large hail and severe wind threat in/near the Enhanced Risk, so only small expansions have been made to the greater wind probabilities in southwest/central KS with this update.

UPDATED: Thunderstorms with possible 60-80 mph developing in central Kansas

A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect until 1115 PM CDT for Lincoln, Ellsworth and northeastern Barton counties.

At 10:06 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 6 miles north of Ellsworth, moving east at 55 mph.

Hazard 70 mph wind gusts and penny size hail.

Impact Expect considerable tree damage. Damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

Locations impacted include Ellsworth, Wilson, Claflin, Kanopolis, Lincoln, Holyrood, Sylvan Grove, Beverly, Lorraine, Barnard, Ash Grove, Westfall, Ellsworth Airport, Kanopolis Lake, Kanopolis State Park, Odin, and Wilson State Park.
