On Tuesday it was announced that Kansas Wesleyan will launch its 26th intercollegiate sport in the fall of 2025, as women's wrestling will begin competition that semester. A coach will be hired this fall, with assistant coaches to follow.

The program is the first KWU has added since Sept. 2020, when men's volleyball joined the slate. Current offerings Esports, women's flag football, and men's and women's bowling have also joined the Coyote Athletic Department in the past decade.

There are 37 NAIA schools in the United States who offer women's wrestling programs. More than one-third of them are in Kansas, Missouri or Nebraska, and the Coyotes will become the sixth KCAC school to sponsor the sport. 2024 was the second year that the program held championship status in the NAIA.

Elsewhere Zebby Matthews threw five crisp innings to win his major league debut for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/minnesota-twins">Minnesota Twins</a>, who hit Seth Lugo hard to hand the All-Star right-hander his worst start of the season and beat the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kansas-city-royals">Kansas City Royals</a>&nbsp;13-3 on Tuesday night.

The Twins have won 18 of their last 20 games against the Royals at Target Field, a stretch of dominance during which they’ve outscored them 123-56. The Twins are 7-2 against the Royals overall this year.

The Royals will return to Target field looking to stave off the sweep this afternoon at 12:10.

Q: Are there specific areas where you feel like Xavier Worthy has made progress?

NAGY:&nbsp;“Probably the biggest thing, Adam (Teicher), is him understanding that everything’s not going to be perfect, but how do you respond to (it) – for example, today a couple (of) misconnections between him and Pat (Mahomes), downfield throws that they didn’t hit. You put that on tape and now they can take that and talk through why it happened. He’s been good with that. He didn’t get a whole lot of reps in the first preseason game. For him, probably the biggest thing is making sure it's not going to be perfect, but we are trying to get to that point to where you guys really start clicking and understanding the why’s behind, maybe why you didn’t get that throw or why there wasn’t a catch. He’s had a phenomenal attitude.”

Q: Who do you need to step up with Hollywood Brown out?

NAGY:&nbsp;“I think right now for where he’s at, probably Justin Watson coming in (and) knowing the role. (It’s not) necessarily step up, I don’t know if I would use that word more than anything. It’s different because there are different guys in for different series and different quarters. If you have an opportunity, no matter who you are, where you’re at, whatever role you’re in, you're trying to make this team. For us, we understand that we have our – the first and second group of guys that you guys have seen out there in different quarters. Whoever that is, go ahead and use the competition to make a play. I think it could possibly be different every game, we’re just – we’ll wait and see.”

Q: Is there anything you want to emphasize more from preseason game one to game two?

NAGY:&nbsp;“Probably more than anything, and it’s very natural, is we had some mental errors from the group. You can’t necessarily always see it in the newspaper with the stats. It’s typical to have that, so let’s reduce that. You guys have heard me say, ‘We’re looking for the guys that don't make the same mistake twice,’ so when you have a second game you can evaluate that.”

Q:&nbsp;How have you seen yourself grow more comfortable in this offense?

SUAMATAIA:&nbsp;“Just staying in the playbook day in and day out. You can never study too much. Just making it a habit of mine to – you know, right before I go to bed, right as I wake up, just having that refresh in my mind so I can just go out there and play loose and free.”

Q:&nbsp;How would you evaluate your first game?

SUAMATAIA:&nbsp;“It went good. Went against one of the best pass rushers in the league, Josh (Hines-) Allen. He’s a dog. I’ve watched him since I was in college and in high school. It was a great experience. It was good to – it was funny – okay, I went against this guy and was like, ‘Okay, I belong here. I can play with these guys.’ I can’t wait for Detroit now. Onto the next game now.”

Q:&nbsp;How much do you like plays that ask you to be on the perimeter and show off your athleticism?

SUAMATAIA:&nbsp;“I love plays like that. I don’t know – it’s fun. I don’t run out here for nothing so (laughter). I’m running out 20 yards, 30 yards, maybe even 50 sometimes. When I run out there, I just know that’s the play we’re going to score on. Every time I get to be out there, I can show how fast I am. I’m strong. I’m out there – running back right behind me or right beside me. Wherever he needs me to block for him then – it’s real fun though.”

Q:&nbsp;What are you trying to prove now that you are back on the field?

WATSON:&nbsp;“I mean, it’s a new year. With (Titans CB L’Jarius Sneed) LJ leaving, it’s a spot open (at cornerback) for everyone, so everyone has goals for themselves. (The goal is to) just try and make a name for yourself (and) let the world know who you are.”

Q:&nbsp;You could’ve shut it down last year. What made you continue playing?

WATSON:&nbsp;“I just love playing football. I mean, that’s the goal. I felt – like on game days, if I took a couple you know – I could play it, I could play through it. I just had to get through the practices. In the games, I really didn’t feel it because you know the adrenaline was going and I made the best of the situation. I just wanted to get another Super Bowl and it happened, so it was all worth it.”

Q:&nbsp;What’s it been like competing for that number two spot for the cornerback position? What’s your mindset going into the battle?

Kansas Wesleyan to add Women's Wrestling in Fall 2025

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State defensive coordinator&nbsp;Joe Klanderman&nbsp;and five offensive players – safeties&nbsp;Jordan Riley&nbsp;and&nbsp;VJ Payne,&nbsp;linebacker&nbsp;Austin Romaine, defensive end&nbsp;Cody Stufflebean&nbsp;and cornerback&nbsp;Jacob Parrish&nbsp;– met with members of the media for the first time during fall camp on Tuesday at the Vanier Family Football Complex. JOE KLANDERMAN, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

On if the guys are hitting the wall or going forward through fall camp...

“Coach Klieman is pretty good at, ‘We’re not going to blitz them, blitz them, blitz them and then taper.’ We've got a plan, we've got progression that him and Coach Tru (Trumain Carroll) worked on throughout the summer. Rarely do we have consecutive really rugged practices. So, we might go with a really rough and tumble practice followed by maybe an easier day on their legs. We try to keep it that way and build them up that direction. We did that last fall too, and we felt they were fresh early in the year. We were able to keep them fresh throughout. So, I think the grind is more mental, and I think we're starting to get over that hurdle right now because of the installation. Day one, two, three are usually pretty easy, but then you get into four, five and six, and you start losing a few mentally; seven, eight, nine it really piles on guys and only the strong survive. We're over that hurdle now, and we're starting to get on the backside of that, and guys are starting to catch back up to the install a little bit and concepts starting to click. So, we’re starting to look a little faster out there.”

On if this is the deepest defense since he’s been here…

“I would say so. That’s hard to say because I haven't seen some of those guys that we’re counting on in games yet, but ability-wise, there's no question about.”

On what has impressed him most about the defense…

“I think we're playing with more speed now. We were playing fast, I thought, the first few days. When I sat back and looked, especially when you looked at the secondary, those guys are playing fast, and I think it's gotten even better. There hasn't been anybody taking their foot off the gas. I think these guys are really driven. I kind of felt that throughout the spring and the summer, but you don't really know until they show it to you with their actions. I think that's one action that shows me that we have a really mature group. We come every day. We practice our butts off.”

On going against the K-State offense in practice…

“Yeah, talent-wise, they're good, but the other thing that I always appreciate about our offense is the variety of things we see. We're going to see RPO game, we're going to see quarterback run game, we're going to see downhill run game, we’re going to see I-backs, we’re going to see 13 personnel, we’re going to see spread pass game. We've got everything going on, and our guys are managing it. So, not only do we have to handle our installation, but then we have to manage it against all the different complexities. It would be one thing if we got 11 personnel and threw it all over the place. I think guys can handle that pretty easily. But, when you're in unbalanced and you're in all the different things that we do, it tests your rules and principles and makes sure that you know. I think that's really helping our players defensively.”

On who would be considered the quarterback of the defense…

“Boy, I'd say we're a, what do they call that? A dual quarterback system? I really would. The easy answer is Austin Moore, and I think if you asked, he's kind of an unquestioned leader. He has everybody's ear and everybody's respect because of all the things he's been through, because of how steady he is every day, because of how humble he is in the things that he does with all of what he's done. So, he's certainly a leader, but as far as who's out there talking, we've seen an emergence of, in the corner room, Jacob Parrish, Keenan Garber. You haven’t heard those guys in the past, and they're there. They're loud. Marques Sigle. Jordan Riley is good communicator. VJ (Payne) is an excellent communicator. We actually did a walkthrough yesterday because I wanted to impress on the young guys. It was kind of a weird (thing). We took five minutes and did this. I wanted to impress on the young guys just how much those guys communicate. So, we had the young guys stand around, and I put out some offensive formations and gave our starters some calls, and just a presnap communication that was going on with those guys was electric. It was awesome, and it was a great lesson for some of those younger guys, the guys that are going to come up and be really good players, for those guys that hear what's really going on up there. It's more than just lining up and knowing what your keys are. It's helping everybody else out with what you might see through your presnap process. So, it's the quarterback by committee.”

On how K-State recruits good safeties out of the portal…

K-State’s Defense Meets the Media on Tuesday

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Zebby Matthews threw five crisp innings to win his major league debut for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/minnesota-twins">Minnesota Twins</a>, who hit Seth Lugo hard to hand the All-Star right-hander his worst start of the season and beat the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kansas-city-royals">Kansas City Royals</a>&nbsp;13-3 on Tuesday night.

Matthews (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts, the latest and most meaningful feat for the 24-year-old right-hander who started the season in Class A.

Matt Wallner and Jose Miranda led the barrage against Lugo (13-7) from the middle of the batting order, and Max Kepler had a three-run homer and Kyle Farmer hit a two-run shot once the Twins reached the bullpen. Minnesota kept pace with AL Central leader Cleveland, still trailing by 3½ games. Kansas City fell six games back.

The Twins (67-52) and Royals (65-55) control the second and third wild-card spots, respectively.

The first four batters reached against Lugo, the major league wins leader who endured by far the shortest of his 25 starts this year. Already trailing 5-2, he gave up three hits and a walk to start the fifth before being pulled. Lugo had logged at least six innings in all but four of his turns until this.

Lugo was charged with nine hits, eight runs, two walks with four strikeouts. One run was unearned due to a throwing error on third baseman Maikel Garcia that put Miranda on and gave the Twins a fourth consecutive batter to reach base to start their first inning.

Christian Vázquez also homered for the Twins, who got three hits and two RBIs from Miranda, and three runs plus two hits and a walk from Wallner in their 15-hit attack — eight for extra bases. Wallner started the game with a leaping catch against the left field wall to steal a home run from Michael Massey.

On Monday, Kansas senior cornerback Cobee Bryant earned a spot on the watch list for the 30th Chuck Bednarik Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.

This is the second consecutive year that Bryant has been honored by the Bednarik Award in the preseason and it becomes the third watch list for him this season. He has previously received watch list selections from the Bronko Nagurski Award and the Jim Thorpe Award.

Bryant is eighth in school history with nine career interceptions. He has scored four touchdowns in his career, adding a fumble return and blocked field goal return to two interception returns. He finished the 2023 season with 32 tackles, four interceptions and 9 pass breakups.

Kansas Football was also ranked No. 22 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll, marking Kansas’ first preseason appearance in the poll since 2009.

The Jayhawks are now ranked in both major college football preseason polls for the first time since 2008.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Willi Castro had a three-run home run and Royce Lewis hit a two-run shot in a six-run second inning for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/minnesota-twins">Minnesota Twins</a>&nbsp;on the way to an 8-3 victory over the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kansas-city-royals">Kansas City Royals</a>&nbsp;to open a key series between the division rivals and close wild card competitors on Monday night.

“If we keep playing like this, a game like today, we’re going to be a good spot at the end of the year,” Castro said.

Pablo López (11-8) finished six innings with two earned runs allowed for his third win in four starts for the Twins. He fell behind on a first-inning home run by Bobby Witt Jr. and an RBI single in the second by Kyle Isbel, who had three hits, but the Twins overwhelmed Royals starter Brady Singer (8-8) after that.

The Twins, who improved to 6-2 against the Royals this season, remained 3 1/2 games behind American League Central leader Cleveland after splitting a four-game series with the Guardians during the weekend. The third-place Royals dropped to five games back.

“We pay enough attention to it because it’s everywhere: it’s on social media, it’s in the MLB app, it’s on the scoreboard, it’s in every ballpark when you walk in and the scoreboard has standings,” López said. “So you’re aware of it, but we like to be in the mindset that we control our own destiny.”

The Twins (66-52) occupy the second AL wild card spot. The Royals (65-54) control the third spot, with a two-game cushion above the cut in their refreshing push to return to the playoffs for the first time since they won the 2015 World Series.

“First of all, I want to thank you guys for all that you do. There are some places around the country that the relationship with the media is not positive, and it’s definitely not as good as it is here. We really appreciate you for what you do.

“I want to advise you that this message will kind of sound like a broken record, but actually, I know there's only one person in this room that knows what a record player looks like. I'm not going to call any names, but his initials is, uh, Wyatt Thompson. But actually, yeah, maybe a few other guys do as well. So, I'm going to use young people's terms, and I'm going to say this message will kind of sound more like a corrupted file. That's kind of what you guys are used to.

“Every year there's a ton of excitement for the season, especially this program with the expectations, but I think it's important that we note that there's a whole lot of people in our program behind the scenes that make it go. They really make it go. As coaches, yeah, we are on the field and we're yelling and screaming from practice to the games, but there are people on our staff, people like Riley Galpin, who does a great job in recruiting; like Matt Greenwald, who works in athletic training; Bill Banks, of course, in academics over the years – our guys have performed exceptionally well in the classroom; Ellie Yuska in nutrition; and Isaac Lopez in the weight room with our strength staff. They do a great job. Yeah, the people who run those departments, they also get a lot of glory, but at 5:30 in the morning, these people are behind the scenes making this program go. So, I think it's important that we always acknowledge the work that they do.

“Here this fall camp, I really, personally, have tried to pay close attention to what's going on in the other parts of the team because I know, as I try to learn from Coach Klieman in this role, just having a more holistic view of our team. Of course, I know what's going on with the cornerbacks. Of course, I know what's going on in the secondary. Of course, I know what's going on from a defensive standpoint, but this fall camp, I've really tried to make an effort to really see the team from a different vision.

“When I think about the offense, I don't necessarily believe in monsters. If you saw a man walking down the street with like eight arms or saw a guy with like, 10 heads, right, I would classify him as a monster, and that's when I watch our offense. That's kind of what I see. You know what I mean? I see a lot of weapons, and I see our offensive staff using them very effectively. I don't like watching it versus our defense, but I think I'm going to, just like you, be really excited about what we see in the season from our offense as a whole, especially from the skill players. But, the offensive linemen as I've kind of checked them out, and I have relationships with some of these guys. I try to hang around the offensive linemen as a cornerback coach more than any other offensive player. The guys that I've, honestly, on the football field watched, and seen them do some really good things or some common names, but Andrew Leingang, Hadley Panzer, Carver Willis and Taylor Poitier, those guys, again, they’re the mainstays in that offensive line, but this fall camp, I've really been impressed what I've seen from them.

“In the tight end room, from Will Swanson, I've been impressed with him. Garrett Oakley, I think, is going to do some big things for us in the tight end room, as well – both of those guys this season. The wide receivers, who every day I get an opportunity to experience the trash talking that they can give, but from an athletic standpoint, from a performance standpoint, it's really been exciting to watch Keagan Johnson operate in a healthy mode. I’ve just been really impressed with what he's done. I've been impressed with Tre Spivey and his size and his ability to be able to stretch the field. Dante Cephas, a new guy on our team, I’ve been impressed with what he's done. Andre Davis, a younger guy who is a massive player, I've been impressed with his development and watching him be able to go out and perform. Then Sterling Lockett, who, of course, we know the name, but Sterling is continuing to emerge, continuing to develop in that room.

“At the running back position, I don't have to say his whole name, you just say ‘DJ,’ and I've been impressed with his leadership, impressed with his abilities that he's shown when he's been on the field. That's all I'm going to say about him. Joe Jackson, I’ve been impressed with what he's done this fall camp, not only at running back, but what he's done as a special teams player. He's really developed, really improved over being just a little young kid running around. So, I've been impressed with him. Then, Dylan Edwards… that's it. The guy can fly, and he's done it over and over again. So, I'm excited about how our offense is going to be able to use him.

“Avery again, he's another guy that you just pause and you don't have to say anything. You just watch him. I’ve been impressed with Avery, of course, with what he does on the field, but been impressed with how he has taken ownership of the team, and how through the winter conditioning, through the summertime, especially in the fall camp, how he's done a great job of being the leader of our whole team, and not just the offense. I’ve been impressed as well with Ta’Quan Roberson, a new guy on our team.

“When you switch to the defense, Brendan Mott, Jordan Allen, Tobi Osunsanmi and Damian Ilalio, those guys have been really impressive – and at times, even dominant – on the (defensive) line. Austin Moore, a mainstay – and I know every coach and every player who would come in here and talk about our team and the effective leadership that we have, they would mention Austin Moore's name, and I want to make sure I do the same. Asa Newsom, I've been impressed with how he's performed. Des (Desmond) Purnell, kind of like Austin, a guy who's been around and played quite a bit of football for us, but he's been consistent this fall. That's been really cool to see. I've been impressed with a few emerging guys in the safety room. Of course, we have those names, but guys like Wesley Fair, Jack Fabris and Colby McCalister, those guys, in my eyes, had just really started to show themselves in fall camp, and it's been impressive.

“In the cornerback room, Justice James, Donovan McIntosh, Jordan Dunbar, Kanijal Thomas, I put quite a bit of pressure on those guys in fall camp to step up to the plate, to find roles within that position group and on this team. I’ve been impressed and pleased with what they’ve done. We have a tenet that we go by in the cornerback room. We call it the four L's – we love one another, we lower the boom, we're lightning quick, and we're long and lean. Now everybody can't say they’re long and lean, but I think those other things, those other tenets, I’ve just been impressed in fall camp with what those guys have been able to show in those ways.

“Then as a specialist, Chris Tennant, man, I remember watching that kid walk in here as a very young player, and now I just see him operate with an incredible amount of confidence.

REID:&nbsp;“The positive there, Adam (Teicher), is that he’s (Hollywood Brown) going to be back. Without him in there, his experience and that in the league, but we’ve also got other guys that can step in and play. We’ll be okay there. It’s just we’re pulling for him to get back, obviously.”

Q: Is it reasonable to think that Hollywood Brown could play against Baltimore?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, we’ll see. We’ll see how that goes.”

Q: Did you miss not having a fullback last year? Does Carson Steele look like a guy who could be a fullback and a running back?

REID:&nbsp;“Well, you saw what he was as a running back and then he’s learning the fullback spot, as needed. We used Noah (Gray) there last year, who can still do that (play fullback). He’s (Carson Steele) got to be a good special teams player if he’s going to make the team. He’s got to be a good special teams player, and he’s got to be able to carry the football, stay aggressive like he’s doing right now but he had a productive day.”

Q: Did not having a full back hamper you in the redzone?

REID:&nbsp;“No, I don’t think so. I don’t think so. We adapted and I thought Noah (Gray) gave us some good snaps in there.”

WORTHY:&nbsp;“It's huge. Obviously, in college, I kind of had the freedom to get the ball anywhere on the field. Reverses, bubbles, deep passes, intermediate (passes). So just being able to have that here – just get the ball in my hands. I feel like I’d be a threat with the ball in my hands.”

Q: Did anything about the speed of the first preseason game surprise you?

WORTHY:&nbsp;“Coming into the league, it's different speeds at all levels. High school has their own speed, college has their own speed. Obviously, in the NFL everybody is smarter, they move, they adjust better. So just me knowing that I kind of just – if I feel like I had more plays, I’d be able to get a rhythm going into the game, but I feel like I adapted to the game speed pretty well.”

Q: With training camp ending soon, what have you learned about yourself and what has been the toughest challenge to get through this camp?

WORTHY:&nbsp;“The toughest challenge for the camp I feel like, just the playbook. I feel like I got really adapted to it. I’ve been in the playbook really all day (and) all night. Kansas Football Ranked No. 22 in Associated Press Preseason Poll

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas senior cornerback Cobee Bryant has earned a spot on the watch list for the 30th Chuck Bednarik Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.

This is the second consecutive year that Bryant has been honored by the Bednarik Award in the preseason and it becomes the third watch list for him this season. He has previously received watch list selections from the Bronko Nagurski Award and the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck “Concrete Charlie” Bednarik who was an All-American player at the University of Pennsylvania and later a multiple year All Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame and was the last NFL player to be a full-time player on both offense and defense.

From Evergreen, Alabama, Bryant is a Preseason All-Big 12 selection this season after earning All-Big 12 First Team honors in each of the past two years. He has become the first Kansas defensive back to earn first team all-conference honors in consecutive seasons since Aqib Talib in 2006-07.

Bryant is tied for the school record with two career interceptions returned for a touchdown and he is eighth in school history with nine career interceptions. Over the weekend the 2024 Paris Olympics officially came to a close, and the United States emerged victorious tying China with 40 Gold medals and leading the overall medal count by a whopping 35, finishing with 126 medals in all.

This marks four straight summer Olympic victories for the USA, and seven of the last eight dating back to 1996; only China in 2008 was able to steal a summer Olympic victory from the US

All-time the United States have now won 19 summer Olympics with the rest of the world tallying just 9

Speaking of the Olympics Former Kansas Track and Field star Bryce Hoppel broke the American record in the men's 800m after running a 1:41.67 in the Paris. He finished in fourth place overall.

Hoppel, who achieved a new personal best in the final, ran 1:45.24 in the opening round, moving onto the semis with ease. In the Olympic semifinals, he shaved off some time to finish second overall in the field with a 1:43.41.

And finally over the weekend the Kansas City Royals split their I-70 series with the Cardinals as Bobby Witt Jr. drove in three runs and Michael Wacha struck out six in seven innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 8-3 win on Saturday night.

The victory clinched the season series for Kansas City for the first time since 2016. The Royals will have an opportunity to climb the AL Central ladder this week as they prepare for a 3-game set against the Twins in Minnesota

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Parker Washington delivered the longest return under the NFL’s new kickoff rules —&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Jaguars/status/1822412003433923070">an ankle-breaking, 73-yarder that set up an early touchdown</a>&nbsp;— and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs 26-13 in a preseason game Saturday night.

Washington made at least five tacklers miss before finally going down at the Chiefs’ 30-yard line.&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1822413318264623461">Trevor Lawrence found running back Travis Etienne for a 9-yard score</a>&nbsp;four plays later to give the Jaguars the two biggest highlights of the game.

Chiefs receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who signed a one-year, $7 million contract in March, landed awkwardly on a shoulder following an 11-yard reception on the opening play and did not return.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and Kansas City’s other starters played a series before watching the rest from the sideline. Mahomes drove the Chiefs into field-goal range and might have done more had Rashee Rice not dropped a third-down pass over the middle.

Washington, meanwhile, made the most of every opportunity.

The second-year pro, a sixth-round draft pick in 2023 from Penn State, turned heads with the kickoff return and then added a 13-yard punt return. He later chipped in a 10-yard catch in which he slipped out of Keith Taylor’s grasp.

The Jaguars have raved about Washington since training camp opened, and he showed up under the lights. He’s expected to be the team’s No. 4 receiver in a room that includes Christian Kirk, Gabe Davis and first-round rookie Brian Thomas Jr.

Washington gave the Chiefs plenty to work on moving forward. Covering kickoffs has to be an area of emphasis for them.

After Jacksonville went ahead 18-10 on&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Jaguars/status/1822430364746367133">C.J. Beathard’s 44-yard TD pass to speedster Devin Duvernay</a>, Mecole Hardman tried to down a kickoff that bounced in and out of the end zone. Officials huddled, checked the replay and ruled it a safety.

“I think that’s kind of the first time that’s ever happened,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said at halftime. “With the new kickoff rule, the ball is always live, even when it hits in the end zone.”

Jacksonville’s Tank Bigsby looked like he was going to return the ensuing kickoff for a score — kicker Harrison Butker showed no interest in trying to tackle the 215-pound running back — but Bigsby tripped near midfield.

Officials overturned Jaguars cornerback Christian Braswell’s 52-yard fumble return for a touchdown late in the third. Braswell stripped the ball from Nikko Remigio following a 29-yard reception in which he landed on the ground and got up to gain more yards.

Officials ruled Braswell touched Remigio while he was still on the ground, but few in the stands and none on Jacksonville’s sideline agreed.

Thomas, the 23rd overall pick in April from LSU, had the catch of the night for Jacksonville. Thomas&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1822421357621387698">hauled in a 41-yarder from Beathard in the first quarter</a>&nbsp;despite having cornerback Joshua Williams draped all over him. Williams was flagged for pass interference. It was Thomas’ lone reception.

Kansas City’s Xavier Worthy, selected five picks after Thomas, started but wasn’t even targeted in the game.

The Jaguars held out eight players, including starting defensive backs Darnell Savage (shoulder) and Tyson Campbell (ankle). They also held out two starting offensive linemen: left guard Ezra Cleveland (heel) and right tackle Anton Harrison (concussion protocol).

Second-year linebacker Ventrell Miller, who missed all of last season after tearing his right Achilles tendon, left the game briefly with a right shoulder injury but later returned.

Chiefs guard McKade Mettauer limped off the field in the fourth with a left knee injury after getting caught in a pile. Rookie linebacker Curtis Jacobs also was shaken up late.
