MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State placed a Big 12-leading and school-record 17 football seniors from the 2023 season on the National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society list, the NFF has announced.

K-State’s 17-man list also ranked third nationally behind only Nebraska (21) and California (19), and the Wildcats had six more than the next closest Big 12 team, BYU (11).

The 17 Wildcats to earn the honor were&nbsp;Cooper Beebe,&nbsp;Anthony Frias II,&nbsp;Jace Friesen,&nbsp;Will Howard,&nbsp;Justice James,&nbsp;KT Leveston,&nbsp;Matthew Maschmeier,&nbsp;Nate Matlack,&nbsp;Austin Moore,&nbsp;Christian Moore,&nbsp;Brendan Mott,&nbsp;Beau Palmer,&nbsp;Erik Pizarro,&nbsp;Randen Plattner,&nbsp;Sam Shields,&nbsp;Ben Sinnott&nbsp;and&nbsp;Cody Stufflebean, as they were members of an elite group of 1,988 players from 339 schools across all NCAA divisions and the NAIA who qualified for membership in the Society’s 18th year.

“We are thrilled to honor a record number of athletes as part of this year’s Hampshire Honor Society,” said NFF President &amp; CEO Steve Hatchell. “Over the last 18 years, the Hampshire Honor Society has served as a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives.”

Nominated by their respective schools, members of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society must be either a senior player who will graduate this spring/summer and just completed his final year of playing eligibility in 2023 or a graduated player who has been out of high school at least (3) years. The candidates must have attained a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and been starters or contributors throughout the 2023 season.

The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF’s National Scholar-Athlete program by greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year. The program further strengthens the organization’s leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes at the 772 colleges and universities with football programs nationwide.

On Wednesday, Kansas State Men's Basketball Head Coach Jerome Tang announced his summer camp schedule, which includes four camps running from June 7 to 20 for area use on the university campus.

Last night also saw the Kansas City Royals roll to a sixth straight victory as Vinnie Pasquantino broke out of an early season slump with a home run and a career-high five RBI to lead Kansas City to an 11-2 win over the Houston Astros.

Pasquantino went three for three with a single, double, a homer and a walk, with two runs scored after entering the game just for 4-37 with four singles and none driven in. 

Finally Dallas police said Wednesday that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice faces charges including aggravated assault after he and another speeding driver of a sports car caused a chain reaction crash on a Dallas highway. Police said the arrest warrants have been issued for the 23-year-old on one count of aggravated assault and six counts of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury. Rice's the attorney said last week that rice had been driving a Lamborghini SUV when the crash occurred.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — April 11

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino broke out of an early season slump with a home run and a career-high five RBIs to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 11-2 win over the Houston Astros on Wednesday night for their sixth straight victory.

Pasquantino went 3 for 3 with a single, double, homer and a walk with two runs scored after entering the game 4 for 37 with four singles and no RBIs.

“I try not to consider it slumps or highs and lows,” he said. “I just try to consider it that you’re riding this roller coaster and you try to keep it as as much of a kiddie ride as you can. Obviously, the first week and a half wasn’t what I wanted statistically, but tonight felt good.

"The happiest person is probably going to be my wife because I probably won’t be tossing and turning all night. I imagine I’ll sleep a little bit better tonight. Some frustration set in for me. The beautiful thing is when you’re winning, it doesn’t matter.”

The Royals scored seven times in the third inning, jumpstarted by Pasquantino's two-run double. Kansas City, which had eight runs in the seventh against the Chicago White Sox on April 4, have multiple innings of seven or more runs in April for the first time since 2000.

Seth Lugo (2-0) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings. It was the Royals’ ninth quality start in 12 games, the most in the majors.

“If we keep the right mindset, we could do it all season,” Lugo said of the success of the starting pitching. “There’s no reason not to. Just make sure after a good game (or) a bad game flush it and move on (and) keep working.”

The Royals' six-game winning streak is their longest since last September, when they also won six straight — including a three-game sweep of the Astros in Houston. The Royals will go for a 7-0 homestand in Thursday's finale.

The Royals are 7-1 in their last eight games against the Astros.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro said he had seen Pasquantino pressing this season, but he had confidence his slugging first baseman would come around.

“We really feel Vinnie is a really quality major league hitter,” he said. “He’s played in 10 games or whatever prior to tonight. That’s a really small sample. He’s done it at this level before. We know he’s going to continue to do it.”

Spencer Arrighetti (0-1) made his big league debut and worked around trouble in his first two innings before giving up seven runs in his third and final inning. The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/astros-arrighetti-debut-fee6ba28349803b56215e689a45d7cb3">Astros' top pitching prospect</a>&nbsp;said his nerves and emotions were part of his struggle.

“When you want something that bad your whole life, you want it to be perfect," Arrighetti said. "You want it to go really smoothly and you want everything to feel good.

"But the reality is before the game I was a little bit of an anxious mess. I feel like I had to work harder to get my emotions down.”

The Royals batted around in the third. Pasquantino recorded his first extra-base hit and first two RBIs of the season with a two-run double. Salvador Perez single and MJ Melendez walked to load the bases before Nelson Velázquez stroked a two-run single to right.

Adam Frazier drove in Melendez with a single. Hunter Renfroe capped the scoring with a two-run double.

The Astros got a pair of runs in the fourth on a double by Yainer Diaz and a sacrifice fly by José Abreu.

But Pasquantino answered with his first homer of the season in the bottom of the fourth and drove in his fourth run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Royals added two runs in the eighth, including an RBI single by Pasquantino.

Astros: RHP Wander Suero was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land to make room for Arrighetti.

The Astros will send RHP Hunter Brown (0-1, 6.43 ERA) to the mound to face RHP Brady Singer (1-0, 0.68).

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas police said Wednesday that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice faces charges including aggravated assault after he and another speeding driver of a sports car caused a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rashee-rice-sports-car-crash-24b9e3281d0bca8c0c13a0cedda57b93">chain-reaction crash</a>&nbsp;on a Dallas highway.

Police said that arrest warrants have been issued for the 23-year-old for one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury. Rice's attorney, state Sen. Royce West, said last week that Rice had been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rashee-rice-sports-car-crash-dallas-lamborghini-d36bee33712ebb41c4b78f7c3b54b833">driving a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle</a>&nbsp;when the crash occurred.

Arrest warrants were also issued Theodore Knox, 21, who was driving the other speeding sports car, a Corvette, police said. Police said that arrest warrants have been issued for Knox for one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury.

Police said that the passengers in two speeding sports cars who left the scene will not be charged. Police said that Rice and Knox were not currently in custody. West had no immediate comment on Rice's behalf, and it was not clear whether Knox had an attorney.

The crash involved the Lamborghini, a Corvette and four other vehicles and left four people with minor injuries, police have said. Police said the drivers of the Corvette and Lamborghini left following the crash without determining whether anyone needed medical attention or providing their information.

Rice last week&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/stories/doub11e_r/">posted to his Instagram Story</a>&nbsp;that he was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-rashee-rice-car-crash-dallas-bbc86e5cccc79d7bbce5103070995994">taking “full responsibility”</a>&nbsp;for his part in the wreck.

Aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Collision involving bodily injury, a third-degree felony, is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and collision involving injury is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Police have said the drivers of the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far left lane when they lost control and the Lamborghini traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing the chain collision.

Rice was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rashee-rice-corvette-lamborghini-crash-dallas-2f3ac72c23b1d9ca4860f8cacc8b173e">leasing the Lamborghini</a>&nbsp;from The Classic Lifestyle, said Kyle Coker, an attorney for the Dallas-based exotic car rental company. And West has said the Corvette belonged to Rice.

Rice was born in Philadelphia but grew up in the Fort Worth, Texas, suburb of North Richland Hills. He played college football at nearby Southern Methodist University, where a breakout senior season in 2022 put the wide receiver on the radar of NFL teams.

The Chiefs selected him in the second round of last year's draft, and he quickly became one of the only dependable options in their passing game.

Chiefs' Rice facing charges after high-speed crash in Dallas

NEW YORK (AP) —Track and field is set to become the first sport to introduce prize money at the Olympics, with World Athletics saying Wednesday it would pay $50,000 to gold medalists in Paris.

The move is a symbolic break with the amateur past of the Olympics in one of the games' most-watched events.

The governing body of athletics said it was setting aside $2.4 million to pay the gold medalists across the 48 men's, women's and mixed events on the track and field program for this year's Paris Olympics. Relay teams will split the $50,000 between their members. Payments for silver and bronze medalists are planned to start from the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe told reporters that the move is meant "to recognize that the revenue share that we receive is in large part because our athletes are the stars of the show.”

The prize money will come out of the share of Olympic revenue that that the IOC distributes to World Athletics.

However, the move could upset the balance of power in the Olympic movement ahead of the Paris Games. Coe said World Athletics only gave the International Olympic Committee “a heads-up” of its intentions on Wednesday morning, shortly before it published its announcement.

In response, the IOC said it was up to each sport's governing body to decide how to spend its share of Olympic revenue.

“The IOC redistributes 90% of all its income, in particular to the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and International Federations (IFs),” the IOC said. “This means that, every day, the equivalent of $4.2 million goes to help athletes and sports organizations at all levels around the world. It is up to each IF and NOC to determine how to best serve their athletes and the global development of their sport.”

“I’m probably the last generation to have been on the 75-pence (95-cent) meal voucher and second-class rail fare, competing for my own country. So believe me, I do understand the nature of the transition we’ve been in,” Coe said.

The British runner won gold in the 1,500 meters at the 1980 and 1984 Games in an era when Olympic track was on the verge of opening up to professional athletes.

“It’s a completely different planet from when I was competing, so it's very important that this sport recognizes the change in that landscape and the added pressures on many competitors.”

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee awarded $37,500 to gold medalists at the last Summer Games in Tokyo in 2021. Singapore's National Olympic Council promises $1 million for Olympic gold, a feat only achieved once so far by a Singaporean competitor.

In sports like tennis and golf, the Olympic tournament is the only time in a season that many pro players compete for free, with medals on offer but no prize money. But Coe didn't want to speculate on whether other events could follow track and field’s lead.

“I’ve always made it a point not to speak on behalf of other sports,” Coe said.

The move by World Athletics could be seen as an indicator of Coe’s intentions for the Olympics as a whole if he makes a run for the IOC presidency.

Track and field becomes first sport to pay prize money at Olympics.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State men’s basketball head coach&nbsp;Jerome Tang&nbsp;has announced his summer camp schedule, which includes four camps running from June 7-20, for area youths on the university campus.

The 2023 National Coach of the Year, along with his coaching staff, will direct these summer camps, which will begin with the first of two Parent/Child Camps (K-6) on Friday-Saturday, June 7-8. A second Parent/Child Camp will follow on Saturday-Sunday, June 8-9. The camp season also includes the Junior Wildcat Day Camp (ages 4-7) from Monday-Wednesday, June 10-12 and the Powercat Day Camp (grades 3-12) from Monday-Thursday, June 17-20.

All camps will be played at the Ice Family Basketball Center on the K-State campus. These camps are open to all entrants, limited only by number, age and grade level. The camper’s grade level is the one heading into the 2024-25 school year.

Session 1&nbsp;– Friday, June 7 at 5 pm – Saturday, June 8 at Noon

The Southeast of Saline softball team’s season-opening tear continued on Tuesday, as the Lady Trojans swept a two-game set with their rivals from Sacred Heart.

With mercy-rule victories of 12-2 and 16-0, the Lady Trojans move to 8-0 on the year and 4-0 in league play while the Lady Knights fall to 3-5 and 1-3.

Southeast wasted no time getting to work in the opener of this two-game set, striking for eight runs in the bottom of the first and capitalizing on four Sacred Heart errors.

The Lady Knights settled in after that but the damage was done as SES added two more in the third and one in the fourth and fifth to close out game one 12-2 in short order.

In the circle Lexi Jacobson was dynamite, mowing down 11 Sacred Heart hitters and allowing just two runs on five hits without issuing a single walk all day.

At the plate, seven different Lady Trojans would record a hit, with Brielle Ptacek and Bryna Baird reaching base four times each, including an RBI double for Baird to put the finishing touch on the opener.

While game one stayed fairly competitive late, game two was a massacre, as SES scored 13 runs in the first and three in the second, winning a shutout in just 2.5 innings by a final score of 16-0.

Bryna Baird was excellent in the circle for the Lady Trojans, striking out three and allowing just four total baserunners in the shutout.

Southeast scored 16 runs on seven hits, walking eight times and being hit by four more pitches.

Maddie Harris posted the best day overall between the two games, finishing her day 4-5 at the plate with 4 RBI.

The Lady Knights will return to Salina to take on Valley Heights while the Lady Trojans stay in Gypsum to host the Chapman Lady Irish.

Both games were broadcast last night and are now available to view on-demand.

With victories of 7-0 and 7-4 the Knights march on to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in league play while the Trojans fall to 6-6 and 2-2.

Game one was a true pitchers' duel, with the two teams combining for just seven hits, split almost evenly down the middle.

Sacred Heart would score all 7 runs of the contest, with two in the second and three in the sixth bookended by a lone run in the fifth and seventh.

While the bats took time to warm up, the Knights found other ways to get runners aboard, capitalizing on nine walks, three errors, and a pair of hit batsmen.

The real star of the show was Evan Bogart, who tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and seven walks while striking out six.

Game two was more of a back-and-forth affair with Sacred Heart jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first before Southeast clawed both of those runs back in the second.

After a few scoreless frames, the Knights would tally another run in the fifth, and two more for insurance in the sixth and seventh, which proved to be enough as SES scored just two more runs in the final frame, falling 7-4.

This game saw better days at the plate for both teams, with an evenly spread 16 hits this time around.

It was a team effort for the Sacred Heart lineup as six different Knights recorded a hit, and four brought at least one run in to score.

On the bump, Cam Yohe and Jett Samuelson combined to allow just four runs on seven hits, with Yohe striking out six and earning the win.

The Knights will be back in action on Friday when the team returns to Salina to take on Valley Heights, the Trojans meanwhile will continue their homestand on Friday as they battle the Chapman Fighting Irish.

⚾️ #2 Sacred Heart Maintains Undefeated Status in Sweep of SES

This past week showed that&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/72f46d34-e096-41cc-8d20-c1a567fdba17?elinkdata=8546" target="_blank">Adrian Villalobos</a>&nbsp;is good at baseball. Kansas Wesleyan's junior third baseman put together an impressive week in five games for the Coyotes, and his efforts led him to being named the KCAC Baseball Player of the Week, the NAIA Ball Player of the Week, and the NAIA Baseball National Player of the Week.

Villalobos had quite the week for the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes. He helped KWU extend its winning streak to 18 games after a sweep of the Saint Mary Spires in the weekend series.

As the week went on, Villalobos got better and better. He went 2 for 4 with two runs against Sterling in a 10-1 win.

Against Central Christian, he went 3-for-3 with a homer and 2 RBI.

In the first Saint Mary game, he had two hits, both homers, driving in five runs to help KWU get the win. In the second USM game, he went 3 of 4, scoring four times while adding two more homers and driving in two runs. In the series finale, Villalobos again went 3 for 3, with a homer and a double and drove in six runs. His homer and double both came in the 10-run second inning for the Coyotes that turned a 5-0 deficit into a 10-5 lead. He drove in two more runs with a single during KWU's 7-run fourth inning.

For the week his numbers were quite impressive, hitting .765 for the week (.714 in conference games) with a 1.929 conference SLG and a 1.941 overall SLG.

Villalobos earns conference and national player of the week honors

Hello and Happy Wednesday everybody it's Tyler Henry back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports M edicine. 

On Tuesday it was announced that after a monster performance Kansas Wesleyan slugger&nbsp;<a href="https://kwucoyotes.com/sports/baseball/roster/adrian-villalobos/8188">Adrian Villalobos</a>&nbsp;has been selected not just as KCAC Player of the Week but as NAIA National Player of the Week as well. And with good reason.

&nbsp;<a href="https://kwucoyotes.com/sports/baseball/roster/adrian-villalobos/8188">Villalobos</a>&nbsp;helped KWU extend their winning streak to 18 games finishing his five in a week with video game type numbers. The Jr ended of the five games set 13 for 17 at the plate with six homeruns- 15 driven in and a batting average of .785 to go with a slugging percentage of 1.94.

Speaking of baseball after a bit of a slow start, the Kansas City Royals have rallied and thanks to a Salvador Perez game-winning single last night defeated the Astros to win their fifth straight game. The run began with a four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox and could continue tonight as the Royals host the Houston Astros for game two of the series at 6:40 p.m.&nbsp;

 SES softball rolled their rival with wins of 12-2 and 16-0. While the second-ranked nights of Sacred Heart remained undefeated with victories of 7-0 and 7-4.&nbsp;

On Tuesday it was announced that after a monster performance Kansas Wesleyan slugger&nbsp;<a href="https://kwucoyotes.com/sports/baseball/roster/adrian-villalobos/8188">Adrian Villalobos</a>&nbsp;has been selected not just as KCAC Player of the Week but as NAIA National Player of the Week as well. And with good reason. &nbsp;<a href="https://kwucoyotes.com/sports/baseball/roster/adrian-villalobos/8188">Villalobos</a>&nbsp;helped KWU extend their winning streak to 18 games finishing his five in a week with video game type numbers. The Jr ended of the five games set 13 for 17 at the plate with six homeruns- 15 driven in and a batting average of .785 to go with a slugging percentage of 1.94. Speaking of baseball after a bit of a slow start, the Kansas City Royals have rallied and thanks to a Salvador Perez game-winning single last night defeated the Astros to win their fifth straight game. 910 KINA Sports Headlines — April 10

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a game-ending single in the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Houston Astros 4-3 on Tuesday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

Garrett Hampson began the Kansas City 10th on second as the automatic runner, replacing Vinnie Pasquantino. Hampson raced home when Perez led off the inning with a single to center against Wander Suero (0-1).

“We’re gonna play hard,” Perez said. “We’re gonna do our best, especially right now. We've got new comfort.”

James McArthur (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

Perez and Nelson Velázquez each had two hits for the Royals. Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia each drove in a run.

Nick Anderson, Chris Stratton, John Schreiber and McArthur combined for five scoreless innings of four-hit ball in relief of Royals starter Cole Ragans.

“These guys are incredible,” Ragans said of the bullpen. “They pitched incredible. They kept us right there. That’s really, really big.”

Witt's biggest contribution may have been a diving stop on a two-out single by Jeremy Peña in the top of the 10th. Had the ball gotten past the young shortstop, the Astros likely would have taken the lead.

“I thought it did have a chance of going through,” Peña said. “I’ll shout out to Bobby Witt. (He) made a nice play.”

Yordan Alvarez had four hits and two RBIs for Houston, which had won two in a row. Peña had two hits and scored a run.

The Astros loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the first inning, but Ragans limited the damage to a run-scoring fielder’s choice for Yainer Diaz.

“I don’t think (Ragans) had his best stuff,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “That’s a good lineup, and they made him work. (But) if we turn that double play in the first or he’s able to get Alvarez out one of those times with two strikes, he’s coming out of there with one or maybe no runs. Credit to him really."

Alvarez singled in Peña with two out in the second, and then doubled home Mauricio Dubón in the fourth.

Ragans surrendered 10 hits in five innings for Kansas City. He struck out five and walked one.

Houston went 5 for 18 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base.

“We had some opportunities to get some guys in (with) less than two outs," Houston manager Joe Espada said. "We just couldn’t capitalize.”

Houston right-hander Cristian Javier was charged with three runs, two earned, and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Maikel Garcia’s sacrifice fly in the fifth stopped Javier’s scoreless streak at 15 innings to start the season. Witt drove in Hunter Renfroe with a two-out triple, and then scored on an error on third baseman Alex Bregman.

Astros: Placed LHP Framber Valdez on the 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation. They selected the contract of Suero from Triple-A Sugar Land to take his place. The Astros also recalled LHP Parker Mushinski from Sugar Land and optioned RHP Blair Henley to the minors. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Astros transferred RHP Oliver Ortega to the 60-day IL.

Royals: Acquired RHP Colin Selby from Pittsburgh for minor league pitcher Connor Oliver. To make room on the 40-man roster for Selby, LHP Josh Taylor was moved to the 60-day IL. The Royals also signed RHP Zach Davies to a minor league deal.

The Astros and Royals continue their three-game series Wednesday. RHP Spencer Arrighetti will make his major league debut for Houston against Seth Lugo (1-0, 0.71 ERA).

⚾ Salvador Perez leads Royals past Astros for 5th straight win

A pair of area foes will collide in Gypsum this afternoon as the Southeast of Saline baseball and softball teams prepare to welcome in the Knights and Lady Knights of Sacred Heart.

With NCAA play just starting to heat up, it’s all to play for in Central Kansas today, with all four squads looking to gain a foothold in the league standings.

On the baseball diamond, the Knights come in ranked as the #2 team in Class 1-2A, and will be looking to keep their resume unblemished at a perfect 6-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Sacred Heart has already dispatched Republic County in a doubleheader sweep last week, a team the Trojans also handled their business with to open league action.

Despite a brief stumble at the hands of #8 Abilene from Class 4A last week, Southeast of Saline still looks strong at 6-4 overall and 2-0 in league play, boasting a run differential of +72 ahead of this doubleheader.

On the softball diamond, the Lady Trojans will also continue their search for perfection at 6-0 (2-0 in league play) after dispatching a 4A foe in a doubleheader sweep at Abilene last week.

With a veteran-heavy squad, Southeast has been rolling since opening day, having outscored their first six opponents by a mighty 57 runs.

On the other side of this doubleheader duel, the Lady Knights come in at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play after splitting their doubleheader with Republic County last week.

Sacred Heart is one of the youngest teams in the state of Kansas, sporting a roster with just one senior newcomer, and just three junior returners from a season ago.

Salina Post will broadcast all four games with live audio and video as Games of the Week. While these games will not be streamed live they will be made available on-demand from Wednesday on.

SES Welcomes Sacred Heart for Baseball and Softball Doubleheaders in Gypsum

Hello and Happy Tuesday everybody it's Tyler Henry back with another&nbsp; KINA&nbsp; Sports Update presented by Salina regional orthopedic and sports medicine. 

Last night saw the official end of this year's NCAA March Madness tournament from the men's side and for a second year running the UConn Huskies are the kings of March.

Dan Hurley's squad claimed a national title with a 75 to 60 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers becoming the first repeat champs since Florida back in 2006 and 2007 and the first win back to back title games by double digits since the UCLA teams of old. The Huskies made everything look easy from the beginning posting a new NCAA record plus 140 point differential for the entire tournament.

Finally speaking of diamond sports tonight one of the best rivalries in class 3A will find its way to Gypsum as Sacred Hearts baseball and softball teams travel to take on Southeast of Saline.&nbsp;

Take one guess who finished off a romp through college basketball again. You bet, it’s UConn — a team built to win now, and often, and by a lot every time it takes the court.

Coach Dan Hurley's Huskies delivered the latest of their suffocating hoops performances Monday night, smothering Purdue for a 75-60 victory to become the first team since 2007 to capture back-to-back national championships.

Tristen Newton&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/MarchMadnessMBB/status/1777529515146727550">scored 20 points</a>&nbsp;for the Huskies, who won their 12th straight March Madness game — not a single one of them decided by fewer than 13 points.

UConn was efficient on offense but won this with defense. The Huskies (37-3) limited the country’s second-best 3-point shooting team to a mere seven shots behind the arc and only a single make, while happily allowing 7-foot-4 AP Player of the Year Zach Edey to go for 37 points on 25 shot attempts.

<a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSports/status/1777541833658187900">UConn won its sixth overall title</a>&nbsp;and joined the 2006-07 Florida Gators and the 1991-92 Duke Blue Devils as just the third team to repeat since John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty of the 1960s and ’70s.

“I just think it’s the best two-year run in a very, very long time, just because of everything we lost from last year’s team,” said Hurley, whose top two scorers from last year now play in the NBA. “To lose that much and do it again, it’s got to be as impressive a two-year run since at least prior to Duke.”

The 2024 Huskies are the sixth team to win all six tournament games by double-digit margins. They won those games by a grand total of 140 points, blowing past the 1996 Kentucky team, which won its six by 129.

In a matchup of two top seeds, they wore down the Boilermakers (34-5), who made it this far a year after becoming just the second No. 1 in the history of March Madness to fall in the first round. But Purdue left the same way it came — still looking for the program’s first NCAA title.

So much for the free-for-all this new age of the transfer portal and name, image and likeness deals was supposed to become. UConn has figured out how to dominate and replenish its roster with players who understand their roles.

Cam Spencer, a transfer from Rutgers, Stephon Castle, a blue-chip freshman, and Alex Karaban, a sophomore from last year’s team, spent the night guarding the 3-point line and making life miserable for Purdue’s guards.

“They just made a decision — we can defend the perimeter, and we can take this away from you, you’re going to get the ball to your best player, he’ll be 1-on-1, and that’s that,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said.

News broke over the weekend that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kentucky-calipari-arkansas-570669b80b59b362ab2d75d83246f36b">it appears there's a job opening at Kentucky</a>, and the UConn coach's name has come up there.“I don't think that's a concern,” Hurley said. “My wife, you should have her answer that.”No way the Huskies would want to lose him.Hurley earned every penny in this one. In the first half, he begged with, swore at and generally berated the refs about over-the-backs, elbows and hip checks that weren’t called.Once, when that didn’t work after Edey set a hard (and probably legal) pick against Castle, Hurley started in on Edey himself as the center walked toward the Purdue bench for a timeout.But the coach’s best work came in whatever hotel room he used to draw up the game plan.“The whole game plan was no Smith, no Loyer, no Jones, no Gillis,” Hurley said, as he ticked off the last names of the Purdue guards. “We knew if we keep them below 18, 20 points as a group, and they had no chance to win, no matter how well Zach played.”It's no slight on Edey, who battled gamely, finishing with 10 rebounds to record his 30th double-double of the season. But this game proved the number crunchers and analytics experts right. UConn let Edey back in and back down all night on 7-2 Donovan Clingan, giving up difficult 2s in the post in exchange for any 3s.“They only doubled late in the second half, but by that point we had dug ourselves too deep of a hole,” Fletcher Loyer said.The defensive dominance put the finishing touch on a tournament in which UConn's average margin of victory was 23.3 points. Sure, Hurley might have to replace two or three of these players, but the coach said he'll worry about that in a week or two.
