🏈 Bagent leads Chicago to preseason win over Chiefs; Bears' Coleman taken away on a stretcher

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;K-State women’s basketball head coach Jeff Mittie announced the complete non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2024-25 season on Thursday.

The Wildcats' non-conference slate features 10 home games, including a visit from Big East foe Creighton, participation in the 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic in Henderson, Nevada, a visit to 2024 NCAA Tournament participant Texas A&amp;M and a neutral-site matchup against Middle Tennessee State in the Bill Snyder Basketball Classic in St. Joseph, Missouri.

“This is one of the most competitive schedules we have been able to put together,” stated Mittie about the slate. “We are facing teams with outstanding NET numbers, four teams that won over 25 games last year and teams with veteran rosters coming back. This will challenge us in preparation for a highly competitive Big 12.”

K-State’s 2024-25 non-conference schedule includes eight games against teams that reached the postseason in 2023-24, including five teams that played in the NCAA Tournament (Creighton, Duke, Green Bay, Middle Tennessee State and Texas A&amp;M) one team that played in the WBIT (Belmont) and two teams that played in the WNIT (Central Arkansas and USC-Upstate).

K-State officially begins its 57th season of action with a five-game home stand starting on Monday, November 4, as the Wildcats host Green Bay. This will be the seventh meeting in the series, as the Wildcats are 4-2 against the Phoenix. The last meeting between the programs came on December 5, 2007, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a 68-56 Green Bay win.

Green Bay completed the 2023-24 season with a 27-7 overall record and a 17-3 record in the Horizon League and won the Horizon League tournament crown to reach the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats will continue the home stand on Thursday, November 7, as the Wildcats host Belmont. This will be the first meeting in the series between the programs.

Belmont finished the 2023-24 season with an overall record of 26-9 and a 17-3 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference, finishing second to league champion, Drake.

On Thursday, November 14, K-State will host Creighton at 5:30 p.m., in Bramlage Coliseum for the first time since Dec. 9, 2008. The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 15-5. The Bluejays finished the 2023-24 season with a 26-6 overall record, including a runner-up finish in the Big East with a 15-3 mark and a trip to the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats then host Little Rock on Monday, November 18. K-State will welcome the Trojans to Manhattan for the third time in the history of the series and the first time since Dec. 16, 2017. The Wildcats lead the all-time series between the schools, 4-1, winning the last matchup 77-39 on November 11, 2023, in Little Rock.

Little Rock, which will be led in the 2024-25 season by first-year head coach Steve Wiedower who took over for 21-year head coach Joe Foley who retired in July. The Trojans ended the 2023-24 season with a 12-18 overall record and an 11-7 record in the Ohio Valley Conference.

K-State caps its five-game home stand with an inaugural meeting with Milwaukee on Wednesday, November 20. The Panthers registered a 16-16 overall record and a 10-10 mark in the Horizon League.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, the Wildcats will make its first appearance in the 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic at Lee’s Family Forum in Henderson, Nevada. The games will take place on November 25 and November 27, 2024. The Wildcats will face Duke on November 25 at 2 p.m. (CT) and will face either Oklahoma or DePaul on November 27. This will be K-State’s second meeting in the series with the Blue Devils, the first coming on November 27, 2004, at the 2004 Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas.

Duke finished the 2023-24 season with an overall record of 22-12 and an ACC mark of 11-7. The Blue Devils reached the 2024 NCAA Regional Semifinals before falling to UConn, 53-45.

The Wildcats will begin the month of December with a visit from Central Arkansas on Sunday, December 1, at 3:30 p.m. This will be the sixth meeting between the programs, as the Wildcats own a 5-0 lead in the series. The teams last squared off on Nov. 7, 2022, in Manhattan, an 83-43 K-State win.

Central Arkansas finished the 2023-24 season with an overall record of 21-12 and an Atlantic Sun record of 11-5. The Sugar Bears played in the 2024 WNIT, falling to eventual champion Saint Louis in the first round.

K-State continues the three-game home stand by welcoming in Eastern Illinois on Tuesday, December 3. This will be the second meeting between the squads and the first since a 67-49 K-State win on Nov. 25, 1994.

The Wildcats complete the home stand against USC-Upstate on Thursday, December 5. This will be the first meeting in the series between the programs. The Spartans finished the 2023-24 season with a 16-16 overall record, including a 10-6 record in the Big South Conference and played in the 2024 WNIT.

K-State will make its first true road trip of the season, traveling to College Station, Texas, to face Texas A&amp;M on Sunday, December 8. K-State leads the overall series, 13-9.

The Aggies finished the 2023-24 season with a 19-13 overall record, including a 6-10 mark in the SEC. Texas A&amp;M fell in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats will challenge Middle Tennessee State in the second annual Bill Snyder Basketball Classic on Saturday, December 14, in St. Joseph, Missouri, at Civic Arena at 5 p.m. Ticket information for the Bill Snyder Classic will be released in mid- to late-August. K-State leads the all-time series against the Blue Raiders, 2-1. Middle Tennessee State won the last meeting between the schools, 63-49, on Dec. 21, 2010, in San Antonio, Texas.

Middle Tennessee completed the 2023-24 season with a 30-5 overall mark and an unblemished 16-0 record Conference USA. The Blue Raiders reached the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament, falling at LSU under the guidance of head coach Rick Insell.

K-State will close out its 2024-25 non-conference regular season schedule on Tuesday, December 17, as K-State hosts New Mexico State. This will be the first time the Cats and Aggies will face each other. New Mexico State carded a 13-18 overall record and a 6-10 mark in Conference USA.

In preparation for the 2024-25 non-conference schedule, K-State will host Washburn on Wednesday, October 30, for an exhibition game.

The Wildcats enter the 2024-25 season with the return of 10 letter winners, including four starters from last season’s 2024 NCAA Tournament squad. The Wildcats will be led by 2024 All-American center Ayoka Lee, who returns for her final season, senior guard and 2023 All-Big 12 First Team selection Serena Sundell, and the senior duo of Brylee Glenn and Jaelyn Glenn.

The 10 returning letter winners were responsible for 85 percent of K-State’s scoring, 87 percent of the team’s rebounds and 81 percent of the team’s rebounding in the 2023-24 season. The Wildcats will also welcome transfers Temira Poindexter and Kennedy Taylor and redshirts Mikayla Parks and Alexis Hess and freshman Finley Ohnstad.

The 2024-25 Big 12 schedule, game times, promotional and television schedules will be released later this summer.

Lawrence Arnold Named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List

“We are excited to add Madison to our staff,” said Mittie about the program’s newest addition. “She understands college athletics as a former student-athlete and will be a good addition to our group.”

Pahls is responsible for a number of administrative duties within the program including: coordinating staff and team travel and logistics, money and budget management, manage all home game logistics, on-campus recruiting logistics, training table coordination, camp/clinic budgets, daily office operations, and direct program contact for all other KSA departments.

Prior to joining the K-State women’s basketball staff, Pahls worked for No Stone Unturned Therapeutic Learning Center in Manhattan where she provided speech and language intervention, evaluation and assessment services to patients ages 0-19 with various speech and language needs (feeding and swallowing, articulation, cognition, dyslexia, voice disorders, pragmatics, expressive and receptive language and AAC. She planned lessons for all clients based on their primary concerns and individual interests.

Pahls graduated from Fort Hays State with her bachelors degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2020 and her masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 2022.

During her time at Fort Hays State, Pahls was a four-year letterwinner on the women’s basketball team. She played in 114 career games and tallied 514 points, 271 rebounds and 109 assists. She was a five-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll recipient and a three-time DSADA Academic Achievement Award recipient.

K-State Adds Pahls as Director of Women’s Basketball Administration

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Chris Klieman claims that he doesn't pay attention to what prognosticators say about his program.

It's a hard sell given everyone else in the Wildcats' locker room seems to know.

Voters picked Kansas State to finish second in the new-look league, even though not a single player was chosen preseason all-conference.

How's that for equal parts flattery and disparagement?

“Everybody sees it, but it’s not something that we talk about an awful lot,” Klieman said. “I hope it shows people the overall depth and value of our roster and how important our role players are, and how important our players are as far as if you are a successful team, individual honors at the end of the season are going to come.”

In other words, it's not exactly bulletin-board material because the Wildcats need no such thing.

“I’m sure that our players, if you asked them, they probably saw both polls,” Klieman said, “and I don’t know if they’re excited, disappointed, but I know they were aware that there was nobody from K-State on one of those teams, but you still have to perform, and we’ve got a lot of work to do before we get to the end of August.”

That's when Kansas State begins a season of high expectations, ranked 18th in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">preseason AP Top 25.</a>

After winning nine games last season, and a bowl game for the second time in three years, the Wildcats not only return a bevy of talented players but supplemented them by landing marquee transfers and recruits at important positions. Dylan Edwards, who led Colorado in rushing last season, provides depth in the backfield, and Dante Cephus joined the program to help out at wide receiver. On defense, Ball State safety Jordan Riley could compete for starting snaps beginning with Week 1.

Whether the Wildcats can win the newly configured Big 12, and earn a spot in college football's expanded playoffs, will likely hinge on the quarterback. Avery Johnson dazzled in his opportunities last season, including a bowl win over North Carolina State, and the dual-threat talent has the ability to contend for conference player-of-the-year honors.

Even if many of the prognosticators think otherwise.

“Feel like the biggest thing is not getting too caught up on the preseason rankings, and looking too forward into the season,” Johnson said. “Right now our focus is on UT-Martin, and after that is going to be Tulane, and taking every week a week at a time.”

After offensive coordinator Collin Klein left for the same job at Texas A&amp;M, the Wildcats promoted offensive line coach Conor Riley to the job. But he won't have to orchestrate the offense alone. Kansas State also hired former Texas Tech and Utah State coach Matt Wells, who is particularly adept at working with quarterbacks, to help with that side of the ball.

Johnson showed he can move with 71 yards rushing and a touchdown in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, and his ability to scramble will be a big part of the offense. But it's not just the QB who will chew up yards on the ground. DJ Gidden is back after running for 1,226 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Edwards provides a lightning-quick alternative to his powerful running style.

Kansas State has to replace four multiyear starters along the offensive line along with Ben Sinnott, who had been among the Big 12's best tight ends. North Dakota transfer Easton Kilty should help to shore up the front, but each of the other expected starters— Andrew Leingang, Hadley Panzer, Taylor Poitier and Carver Willis — have plenty of experience.

The biggest question on defense lies in the secondary, where Kobe Savage's decision to transfer to Oregon opened up a big hole at safety. Jordan Riley, VJ Payne and Marques Sigle are the front-runners at safety while Keenan Garber and Jacob Parrish headed into fall camp as the presumptive starters at cornerback.

Kansas State may ease into the season against UT-Martin on Aug. 31, but the schedule heats up in a hurry. The Wildcats head to Tulane — which has won 23 games the past two seasons — the following week before facing Big 12 newcomer Arizona. The conference schedule includes a three-game stretch that could decide whether the Wildcats play for a title for the second time in three years: at BYU, against Oklahoma State and at Colorado.

DJ Gidden is back after running for 1,226 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Edwards provides a lightning-quick alternative to his powerful running style.<h2>Offensive holes</h2>Kansas State has to replace four multiyear starters along the offensive line along with Ben Sinnott, who had been among the Big 12's best tight ends. North Dakota transfer Easton Kilty should help to shore up the front, but each of the other expected starters— Andrew Leingang, Hadley Panzer, Taylor Poitier and Carver Willis — have plenty of experience.<h2>On defense</h2>The biggest question on defense lies in the secondary, where Kobe Savage's decision to transfer to Oregon opened up a big hole at safety. The conference schedule includes a three-game stretch that could decide whether the Wildcats play for a title for the second time in three years: at BYU, against Oklahoma State and at Colorado.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalon Daniels contorted himself for the cameras, posing just about every way imaginable, and the back that has given the Kansas quarterback so much consternation the past couple of years seemed to effortlessly twist in myriad directions.

That's a good sign for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">the 22nd-ranked Jayhawks.</a>

The work Daniels was putting in for the various pregame hype videos and promos was a good sign that he might be able to remain healthy this season. And if that is the case, perhaps the Jayhawks can go from mediocrity — itself a big climb from where the program was not long ago — to one of the elites in the reconfigured Big 12.

“Shoot, all the stuff they do behind over here,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said, gesturing toward the photo and video crews at work, "I think we’ve got to have him stretch or something before they do all that stuff they video back there. I go, ‘If he can make it through everything they’re doing to video for pregame stuff, I think he’s going to be fine.'”

Daniels was a big reason Kansas jumped from two wins in Leipold's debut season to six the next year, capped by a trip to a bowl game. Last season lasted just three games for Daniels before back issues flared up, causing him to sit the rest of the way, while since-graduated Jason Bean led the Jayhawks to nine wins and a victory in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

“Football is one of those sports where injuries happen, and quite frankly, when injuries happen, it’s the next man up,” Daniels said. “I’ve been saying that since I was a third string. It’s the next-man-up mentality in a game of football.”

At his best, Daniels has proven to be one of the most dynamic playmakers in the country.

But to be at his best, he has to be on the field.

Same for the Jayhawks, for that matter. As good as Bean played at times last season, it is easy to wonder whether Kansas would have been even better had their starter been under center. And to be at their best this season, particularly in a league without a clear-cut favorite, the Jayhawks will need to have Daniels performing at a high level again.

“I try not to ask Jalon more than once a week how is he doing because I know everybody asks him,” Leipold said. “He’s excited. He wouldn’t be here today if we didn’t think he was going to be ready to go for this season. I can tell you that.”

Kansas will play its entire schedule away from Lawrence as construction crews work on a new stadium set to open next season. Home nonconference games against Lindenwood and UNLV will be played at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, the home of MLS team Sporting Kansas City. Home conference games will be played across the state line in Kansas City, Missouri, at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Super Bowl-champion Chiefs.

Longtime assistant Andy Kotelnicki was hired by Penn State as its offensive coordinator, creating a rare opening in a stable coaching staff. Jim Zebrowski was promoted to co-offensive coordinator to keep some continuity in the Kansas offense while Jeff Grimes, a former BYU and Baylor assistant, was brought in as co-offensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

Devin Neal turned down the chance to leave school early for the NFL to continue his rise up the career rushing list at Kansas. He is coming off a second straight 1,000-yard season, going for 1,230 yards and 16 touchdowns while averaging 6.3 yards per carry, and needs just 765 yards to pass June Henley, whose career mark has stood since the 1996 season.

Kansas has to replace some crucial pieces on the defensive front, but the linebacker corps led by Jayson Gilliom and Taiwan Berryhill Jr. coupled with an experienced secondary should help. Cobee Bryant and Mello Dotson would have been middle-round draft picks but both decided to return, giving the Jayhawks perhaps the best cornerback duo in the Big 12.

After opening with Lindenwood on Aug. 29, the Jayhawks head to Illinois before facing UNLV, which it beat in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in December. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Lorenzen pitched seven shutout innings, MJ Melendez homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 on Wednesday for their sixth win in seven games.

The Royals spoiled&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/johnny-cueto-returns-angels-1cfdd852875a8b0a8b3063e8cdd3e5cf">the season debut of Johnny Cueto</a>&nbsp;(0-1), a 17-year veteran who helped Kansas City win the 2015 World Series.

Cueto hadn’t pitched in the majors since Sept. 27 last year with the Marlins. He signed a minor league contract with the Angels in July, and was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake earlier Wednesday. He allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings and left the mound to an ovation from the Kansas City crowd.

Lorenzen (7-6) allowed four hits, two walks, a hit batter and struck out five. He only allowed two runners to reach scoring position.

John Schreiber pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Lucas Erceg worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his sixth save and fourth with the Royals.

The Royals (71-56) remained tied with the Minnesota Twins for the second wild-card spot and moved to within 2.5 games of AL Central-leading Cleveland with their first home series win in a month.

The Royals put together a two-out rally in the second to grab a 2-0 lead. Hunter Renfroe and Adam Frazier singled, Maikel Garcia walked and Kyle Isbel hit a two-run double to the right-center gap.

Melendez smacked a two-out solo home run off the right-field foul pole in the sixth for a 3-0 lead.

Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. That’s Witt’s fifth hitting streak of 10 or more games this season.

The Angels optioned RHP Hans Crouse to Triple-A Salt Lake City to make room for Cueto. They also released RHP Jose Cisneros to add Cueto to the 40-man roster.

The Angels have not announced a starter for the series opener at Toronto Thursday. ... Michael Wacha (10-6, 3.33 ERA) will start for the Royals at home against Philadelphia on Friday.

Earlier this preseason, Kansas had 11 players selected to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 Watch List, which also listed Daniels, Neal, Arnold, Grimm, Foster, Bryant and Dotson.

Kansas has had 43 players compete in the Reese’s Senior Bowl all-time, including participants in each of the past three seasons. Most recently, Dominick Puni and Austin Booker competed in the game before being selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, which saw Puni drafted in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers before Booker went to the Chicago Bears in the fifth round. Kyron Johnson was selected for the event in 2022 before becoming a fifth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles, while Lonnie Phelps Jr. played this past season and later signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent.

Kansas Football Has 10 Selected to 2024 Senior Bowl Watch List

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Anderson outlasted Cole Ragans in a matchup of All-Star pitchers, Zach Neto hit a go-ahead homer for Los Angeles, and the Angels beat Kansas City 9-5 on Tuesday night to end the Royals' five-game winning streak.

Anthony Rendon, Kevin Pillar and Logan O'Hoppe drove in two runs apiece for the Angels, who had lost three straight and six of seven overall. Nolan Schanuel walked three times, and Jo Adell and Jack Lopez each drove in a run.

“That team has been playing really good baseball,” Anderson said. "You just want to battle and give your guys a chance."

Anderson (10-11) allowed five runs on 12 hits and two walks while pitching into the seventh, when Kansas City trimmed a five-run deficit to two. It was good enough to make Anderson the first Angels lefty since Hector Santiago in 2016 to reach 10 wins.

It also was better than Ragans (10-8), who was pulled after Neto homered and two more batters reached base in the sixth. The left-hander allowed five runs — four earned — on three hits, three walks and a hit batter while striking out nine.

“It's always nice when you score runs and we've been having trouble doing it,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “Today we got a chance to score them and tomorrow I hope we can continue. ... I just want us to be consistent and able to sustain it. Tonight we were able to do that. But I would like to see us come back tomorrow and put those types of at-bats together.”

Vinnie Pasquantino had three RBIs for Kansas City. Bobby Witt Jr. had three hits and drove in a run.

The Royals had not trailed during their five-game win streak, but the Angels were able to strike first Tuesday night. Schanuel and Pillar led off the fourth with doubles, and Rendon's sacrifice fly later in the inning gave them a 2-0 lead.

Kansas City answered in the bottom half on doubles by Witt and Pasquantino and Hunter Renfroe's tying single.

Neto homered for the second straight game leading off the sixth, and Ragans walked Schanuel and plunked Pillar before departing for the night. O'Hoppe and Rendon greeted James McArthur with run-scoring singles to give Los Angeles a 5-2 lead.

In the seventh, Pillar added a sacrifice fly after a 14-pitch at-bat and O'Hoppe hit an RBI single to extend the lead to five.

The support came in handy when Kansas City scored three times in the bottom of the inning. But Hunter Strickland came in for Anderson and limited the damage, and Los Angeles added two more runs in the ninth to put the game away.

“They fought like they always do,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We had a chance to come back there in the seventh and just couldn’t get there.”

Crew chief Vic Carapazza's umpires had a tough night, getting three calls overturned by review. Two involved first base umpire Mike Estabrook and the third came when plate umpire Tom Hanahan incorrectly called Rendon out trying to score in the ninth.

Royals: RHP Hunter Harvey (back tightness) had a setback while throwing before Monday night's game. He received an injection Tuesday, Quatraro said, and the hope is Harvey can try throwing again later in the week.

Angels: RHP Johnny Cueto will be back on a big league mound Wednesday night when the Angels wrap up the series. The 38-year-old Cueto, who helped the Royals win the World Series in 2015, had been pitching at Triple-A Salt Lake.

Q:&nbsp;Are there still guys that you want to get a last look at with one preseason game left?

TOUB:&nbsp;“Oh yeah, we still want to – I mean, obviously, the wide receiver group. There’s a bunch of guys there – how many guys we’re going to keep, and those guys are still battling for positions. A couple of guys are – obviously, they’re all returners. That’s where it comes into play for me.”

Q:&nbsp;Were you happy with the return game in the Lions game compared to the first week?

TOUB:&nbsp;“I was. We didn’t get a lot of reps in that other game. There were a lot of touchbacks, so I was looking forward to – I’m glad we got some returns this week to see what our stuff’s going to look like. I was happy with the way they blocked, and they finished – did a nice job.”

Q:&nbsp;How do you envision your kickoff return depth chart, and with the game Thursday night, who will you put back there?

TOUB:&nbsp;“I don’t know. Could be Mecole (Hardman.) Nikko (Remigio) did a great job. I’ll be pounding a table for that guy, I love him. (Carson) Steele, he looks good back there. He hits it north and south. He’d be able to block. He’s a guy that you could use at backup running back somewhere – maybe (Deneric) Prince. You need bigger guys that can block too back there. It’s not – you just can’t have two punt returners back there, I don’t think.”

Q: How annoying is it to have guys out at different times in general and during a cornerback battle?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“Yeah, so, more frustrating than annoying because it’s really part of it. I was – I made this point in our (defensive) unit meeting the other day, but I don’t believe – we couldn’t have because J Reid (Justin Reid) hasn’t had any practice snaps, right? So, I don’t believe we’ve had the – let’s call it our top 11, 12, or 13, whatever that is. I don’t think we’ve had them on the field for one play. That’s concerning (and) frustrating. Now, I did say to them, ‘Those things are out of our control. I can’t control guys getting hurt, (but) what we can control is our conditioning and being ready to play and all of that.’ With regards to your question about the corners, it’s making it really difficult to decide which way to go. We’ve got one more game. Some of these guys will play that are still fighting for jobs, but we can't say there is a starting other corner right now, in all honesty.”

Q: You have established roles in the safety room. How do you reconcile playing everyone in the safety room?

Every once in a while, we might have four safeties on the field at the same time, but not too often and the down and distances kind of dictates that. I’m really happy and excited for what maybe Jaden (Hicks) can do for us. We know the other three guys are reliable. We just haven’t had Justin Reid out there in so long. The chemistry thing – as we sat in here last year, I remember us talking about when we kind of got rolling (and) playing really good. A lot of it had to do with the chemistry of the guys. That doesn’t just all of a sudden happen after this much time off. So, the concern is – Bryan Cook wasn’t here for a week, Justin (Reid) has been (out) for a while, and Nick (Bolton), those are the chemistry guys. We will just have to do it in practice in the next two weeks as we get ready for Baltimore.”Q: With so many injuries, how tough is it to make roster decisions?SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“We don’t have much of a choice and we will have to go with a little bit of past performances and guys with experience and all those other things. At some point, you’ve got to go with your gut. I mean, the heads get to – I mean (General Manager) Brett (Veach) will get to (Head Coach) Andy (Reid), myself, the coaches, and try to come up with the best 25 or whatever that number is.”OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR MATT NAGYQ: What are some things that you need to see from the young guys this week?NAGY:&nbsp;“Probably the biggest thing is just making sure that we’re putting guys in the right spots for these opportunities. When they get a chance to get to play (in) the last couple of (preseason) games and then getting in this game here – schematically, where we want to get a guy to be able to see a little bit more. Then, these opportunities that jump up for making the team, it’ll be big – for both sides. As a coach, you go into this game and you understand that, for us, it’s our third one. Usually, around the NFL, there’s not a whole lot of scheming that’s going on in these (preseason) games, but it’s so important for these guys to be able to play fast so that we can evaluate them. I think that’s what’s most important, probably.”Q: Is it more necessary to evaluate Carson Steele with his ability to catch the ball out the backfield and pass protection? How have you seen him grow in those aspects?NAGY:&nbsp;“Yeah, that’s definitely a part of it. To see Carson (Steele) do everything that (it) entails to be a running back. He had that one big run in the first game. We were able to see some of that stuff in training camp and some of the practices, but that’s not all about just playing running back. You’ve got to be able to (pass) protect, you’ve got to know where to go, you’ve got to be good on special teams. So, more opportunities (and) more reps are going to be valuable for him and then for us, to be able to see where he's at. Again, another great kid. I think back to when I first met him in OTAs and he’s in there every day (at) meetings early (and) he’s in there trying to learn this offense. Now, he can go out there and try to play and put it on us to see what he can do.”Q: Head Coach Andy Reid was surprisingly okay with the behind-the-back pass in the game. Where do you land on that?NAGY:&nbsp;“I’ve been hearing Pat (Patrick Mahomes) talk a lot about it. We talk about him barking and never biting and I guess he definitely bit the other day in the game. (Travis) Kelce had a particular route he was going to do, it didn’t happen and all of a sudden, I looked up and saw he’s doing the behind the back and then Kelce caught it. I don’t think people understand – Kelce not necessarily knowing where to go or what to do on that play (and) after everything happened, he still caught the ball. I mean, that’s not easy to catch when you don’t know it’s coming. Those guys are crazy and I’m glad it was in the preseason.”Chiefs Player QuotesAugust 20, 2024WR MECOLE HARDMANQ: How are you seeing the young guys in the wide receiver room develop?HARDMAN: “4 (Rashee Rice), he got a year under his belt now, a Super Bowl, so I think he came along very well. He’s getting more of a leader, he’s starting to come into his own, he knows his role for sure, he’s the main guy and I think he takes that with pride and he’s doing a real good job. Xavier (Worthy) he’s coming in, and he’s doing real well. He’ll bring that speed definitely. (It’s) going to be a learning curve for sure when the regular season gets here, stuff like that, every rookie goes through it. As far as right now, he’s doing real well. Coaches love him, we like what he’s bringing out there, so he’s going to be good.”Q: When you say that Xavier Worthy is going to have a learning curve, can you tell us what that is like?HARDMAN: “I think every rookie goes through it. I think when you hit the preseason it’s like – it kind of gives you like a college feel in a sense. You feel like you’re good but then when you have regular season hit, that speed changes, the scheme, the atmosphere, it all changes. It’s kind of like, I won’t say a shock but it’s one of those like, ‘Woah, ok this is real, it’s that time.’ I think that’s the learning curve that you hit, it’s not saying a learning curve where you’re going to do bad, not in that sense, but a learning curve as in just the different atmosphere, the different speed, the play type, the knowledge (of) how people are smarter than normal because now you actually have to game plan. People have a – you’re coming in with a game plan and schemes that you probably haven’t been familiar with for real. It’s one thing to show it on film and (another thing to) actually be on the field and see it in a scheme. Baltimore has a real good scheme of doing things and how they want to do certain things. Once you learn that, it’s like, ‘Ok cool people got that.’ Then, that’s when film watching starts coming into play. As a rookie you know we didn’t really – in college we didn’t really watch film like that, you know you watch film over certain things, but it was – it’s not as detailed as it is in the league. That’s just a learning curve that I think everybody goes through. I think people are still going through it. I definitely hit that learning curve my rookie year, just different speed and stuff like that but watching (Dolphins WR) Tyreek (Hill) and Trav (Travis Kelce) make it look so easy, it’s like you learn fast. I’m glad that we have some guys here that have been a part of this offense and (have) been here so when he sees that, I’m pretty sure he’s going to learn pretty fast.”Q: After this last preseason game, cuts happen.
