BROOKVILLE - Reese Krone is a wide receiver’s dream for a quarterback.

“Reese is smart with his passes and rarely throws INTs,” Ell-Saline junior receiver Collin Dent said. “He’s also not the guy that leads you right into a defender to get laid out. I like his deep passes a lot; he puts on your hands so you don’t have to track it down.”

“Usually his passes are right at my chest every time with solid speed,”&nbsp; junior receiver Lucas Correa said. “When I have someone on me he does a good job of getting the ball on my back shoulder or leading it in front of me.”

The 6-4, 220-pound Krone describes himself as a strong-armed, aggressive QB.

“I can throw the ball deep, which is rare in 8-man football, and I have a very aggressive style of running,” Krone said.

Krone’s teammates can’t say enough about last year’s tight end, who hauled in 17 passes for 252 yards and five touchdowns.

“The time has come, and I believe Reese will be able to step up,” senior running back Melvin Lutes said. “I believe he has the necessary skills, and I know he has the capacity to be a good leader.”

“I don’t think anyone will be able to stop our passing game with his arm and our receivers,” junior wideout Kas Kramer said.&nbsp;

Krone’s potential at quarterback is unmatched according to sophomore LB/TE Branton Gosvener, who thinks his quarterback could be the piece that takes the Cardinals all the way to state.

Even standouts from opposing schools took notice of Krone.

“He moves well for a guy his size and has deceptive speed and bounce,” said Moundridge standout Kreighton Kanitz, now playing basketball at Barton CC.

“He was really good under pressure and was great at reading a defense; he tore us apart,” Lincoln star quarterback Logan Meier said.

Playing quarterback is nothing new to the Cardinal field general, who was under center throughout his time in middle school and on JV.

That comfort won’t come without high expectations however, after Ell-Saline made a run to the 8-Man Division-I semifinals in 2023.

“He has big shoes to fill, but I feel that he will be able to handle the pressure and step up for the team,” sophomore defensive back Sawyer Cook said. “He has improved in the weight room and taking on the role of leader.”

That sentiment of Krone’s improvement and the team’s high ceiling are echoed all throughout the Cardinal locker room.

“He has the potential to take us far this year,” sophomore running back Luke Walker said. “He has been working hard to improve his ability in the weight room and has been a good leader. I think he is a great teammate, and his height and overall size makes him both a great passer and lethal on the run.”

Krone’s best touchdown reception last year wasn’t one where his physicality was highlighted, but one where his football IQ was show.

In one of the team's final regular season games, Krone realized there was a specific formation and motion set that would allow him a free path downfield with minimal to no one-on-one coverage.

Krone relayed that information to head coach Joe Roche, who implemented the play and watched his tight end streak 50 yards downfield for a Cardinal touchdown.

Instant gratification for the red and white unit.

“It was a great feeling to be rewarded for my effort to pick apart the defense,” Krone noted. “I was really proud of my coaches for trusting me and proud of myself for seeing that play pan out in my head.”

Krone loves playing smash-mouth football, especially on fake handoffs to a running back.

“I’m just thinking about who I’m going to run over,” Krone said. “My first instinct as a runner is to go through the defenders. You won’t see me doing any juke moves. My state of mind while carrying the ball is strictly putting my head down and getting physical.”

Krone also registered 13.5 sacks on defense, along with five tackles for loss. He collected 64 tackles, including 40 solo, 14 QB hurries, 10 tipped passes and 2 forced fumbles.

The Cardinals, 10-2 a year ago, kick off their season on Sept. 6 against Hanover.

The Royals, who lost 106 games last season, improved to a league-best 23-13 since the All-Star break, when they trailed the Guardians by seven games.

Cleveland had led the division since April 14 — 154 days — before dropping the first three games in this series, which concludes with a matinee Wednesday. The Guardians have lost nine of 12 and are just 17-21 since the break.

Tuesday also saw the announcement of this year’s Kansas Shrine Bowl head coaches as Dominick Dingle of Wichita Heights and Garrett Michael of Sabetha have been chosen to lead the West and East teams respectively.&nbsp;

The Shrine Bowl will be played on &nbsp;Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City, Kansas.

CLEVELAND (AP) — After four months and a lengthy rain delay, there's a second team sitting atop the AL Central.

Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer and Kansas City moved into a tie for first with Cleveland by beating the Guardians 6-1 on Tuesday night in a game delayed more than two hours by rain.

“That’s our goal, to win the division," Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “Clearly nothing is decided. We got a month-plus to go, but we like the way we’re playing. Our guys are super competitive. They don’t back down from anything and this is what a pennant race should be.”

Cleveland had a nine-game lead on June 26. It's gone now.

“For me, it’s about the end of the season,” first-year manager Stephen Vogt said. "It doesn’t matter how you get there. What matters is that we do get there. Yeah, if you want to look back at the standings, you have a big lead that’s early in the season, that’s why you play 162 games.

“There’s nothing that says in this final stretch that we don’t go on a run. There’s nothing that says we don’t do it again. So you can’t look at the standings and worry about where you are on any given day. You’ve got to wait one day at a time, look where you are at the end of the season and then see where it lands.”

DeJong connected in the second inning off Gavin Williams (2-7), and the Royals tacked on three runs in the seventh off Scott Barlow on RBI singles by Maikel Garcia and Michael Massey, to go along with a wild pitch.

James McArthur (5-5) struck out four in two innings, and the Royals' solid bullpen closed with five perfect innings following the rain delay. The Guardians were held to just three hits.

Kansas City's win came with a minor scare.

All-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. got hit on the right hand by a pitch from Pedro Avila in the seventh inning. Witt grabbed his right hand in pain, but the majors' leader in average, hits and runs stayed in the game and ripped a double in the ninth.

Quatraro said Witt got hit on the right middle finger. In the clubhouse, Witt indicated to reporters he was OK.

Cleveland was coming to bat in the bottom of the fifth — and three outs from making the game official — when the ballpark's grounds crew rolled out the tarp at 8:06 p.m. to cover the infield before the rain hit.

When it finally came and lightning raced across the sky above Progressive Field, fans retreated for protection in the concourses. The game was delayed for 2 hours, 14 minutes before resuming at 10:20 p.m. with few thousand die-hards on hand.

DeJong, who came over in a trade with the last-place White Sox in July, said the Royals killed time during the delay by playing video games in the clubhouse. He said All-Star catcher Salvado Perez even tried to learn to play chess.

DeJong said he quickly recognized the Royals have a special group.

“Watching them from the outside in, you saw they got their core pieces," he said. "They got starting pitching. They got Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt, so it’s a great combo right there to build a team around.

“It’s nice to have those guys, but we have depth and guys who can play all over. A lot of guys are contributing from a lot of different angles and a lot of things are going our way.”

Royals starter Michael Lorenzen left in the second after straining his left hamstring while covering first base. Quatraro said Lorenzen will return to Kansas City on Wednesday to undergo imaging tests.

“We think it’s mild, but doubtful he’ll be able to pitch in five days,” Quatraro said. “We’ll have to wait until tomorrow.”

Royals: OF Hunter Renfroe (strained right hamstring) continues to undergo treatment and Quatraro said the hope is “to get him back out there as quickly as we can.” Renfroe was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday after his leg tightened against Philadelphia.

Guardians: RHP Alex Cobb (broken fingernail) threw three simulated innings in a live batting practice against minor leaguers before the game. Cobb is eligible to come off the injured list on Sunday. Vogt said the team is still determining whether to have him go on a minor league rehab assignment.

Guardians RHP Tanner Bibee (10-6, 3.46 ERA) starts the series finale against Royals RHP Michael Wacha (11-6, 3.23 ERA), who is 7-0 with a 2.40 ERA in 10 starts since June 22.

Q: How much do you feel like you missed not playing in the preseason?

BOLTON:&nbsp;“Yeah, man. I think the whole thing, training camp and preseason. Just kind of getting out there and just going through my mechanics, I think that is kind of huge. Especially (in the) preseason and our defense, it’s a lot of communication and getting guys on the same page. I definitely missed that aspect of it. I think I’ve done a great job of kind of just getting in where I can. Making my calls and making my checks and going through the mental part of the game. How can I get (myself) prepared for Week 1? I will continue to do that and stay a little bit late. I’ve talked to (Defensive Coordinator) Coach (Steve) Spags (Spagnuolo) a little bit on the side and talked to the guys who have been playing and learn from them as well as we go.”

Q: How do you feel about the group of defenders that are going to be playing against the Ravens?

BOLTON:&nbsp;“It’s completely different than last year. I think it is a good thing. We have our own identity. We have guys who are emerging as leaders. We got young guys that are stepping up. Throughout training camp, a lot of vet guys weren’t in there. So, we rely on a lot of those young guys for communication and getting people lined up and just playing off of each other. That definitely helps that whenever we come back (injured veterans) guys like Jaden Hicks aren’t about to make all the calls and (so he can) just go out there and play. Play fast and use his instincts. Yeah, I think that has been huge. I think the young guys stepping up in the back half of camp and early in the preseason definitely helped us out, helped us grow a little bit and made (us) a better defense.”

Q: Yesterday you were in the training room and heard a familiar laugh. Was that when you first realized JuJu Smith-Schuster was coming back?

BOLTON:&nbsp;“Yeah. I honestly didn’t know that till that morning. I think he (JuJu Smith-Schuster) came in and was finishing his physical or something like that. I was laying face down on the table just getting some treatment on my elbow. I look up and I’m like, ‘Man this dude sounds familiar.’ It had to be him. I was like man this is crazy, full circle. I think he is glad to be back in the building. We’re happy to have him. A veteran guy that has been here, done that and knows what to expect as we go throughout this whole season, so definitely happy to have him in the building.”

Q:&nbsp;Why do you feel like this is the best spot for you?

SMITH-SCHUSTER:&nbsp;“Just very familiar with the offense. Very familiar with (Head Coach) Andy Reid, Pat (Patrick Mahomes) (and) the guys. Just being in this facility kind of makes your job a lot easier than going to somewhere new where you kind of got to learn everything pretty quickly. I think the hardest part for an offensive player is going into a new system and having to study a whole new playbook. Being in New England, I studied two playbooks, two offensive playbooks. Being familiar with this playbook.”

Q:&nbsp;How do you feel like you’ll fit into this new receiver room?

SMITH-SCHUSTER:&nbsp;“You got speed down the field (and) great hands. Last year, me watching Rashee Rice – his kind of position I played the year I was here. It was very cool to see how those guys used him in that way (and) in that form. Being able to just see that and coming in to be a leader in that room – being a vet in the room. Just being able to help those young guys out. Yesterday was my first practice and being able to see (Xavier) Worthy run, that was pretty impressive. He was just like floating across the field. It’s pretty cool that (we have) a guy like him who can open up the offense.”

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;As K-State puts the final touches on its preparation for the season opener against UT Martin on Saturday inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium, fans are alerted of the following construction projects in and around the Manhattan area that could affect travel plans.

I-70 at Junction City –&nbsp;The pavement replacement project between Exit 295 on the west and mile marker 300 on the east of Junction City will again impact football game traffic this season. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction and is head-to-head. Fans are to note that westbound exit ramps 296, 298 and 299 are closed. The speed limit is reduced in this area and delays are anticipated with heavy gameday traffic. Kansas Department of Transportation officials suggest that fans driving to Manhattan from the south or west who typically utilize I-70 through Junction City consider using an alternate route.

I-70 at McDowell Creek Road –&nbsp;In addition, beginning September 9 prior to the Arizona game on Friday, September 13, the exit at McDowell Creek Road will close as the bridge over I-70 is replaced. Traffic on I-70 in this area will be reduced to one lane through the work zone. The project is scheduled to be completed in May 2025.

Kimball Avenue –&nbsp;Construction on Kimball Avenue has been completed and the roadway is open to east-west traffic at the Denison Avenue intersection. However, shipping delays related to the new traffic signal for the intersection will prevent Denison from reopening to left turns. Only “right-in” and “right-out” southbound traffic will be allowed initially for safety reasons and through traffic on Kimball will not stop.

Denison Avenue –&nbsp;Denison will remain closed south of Kimball to the intersection to Olympic Drive (Recreation Complex entrance) during the football season. K-State Fans Advised of On-Going Road Construction

At nine years old, Coronado Elementary student Ashtyn Hooper competed in the North American One-Armed Golfers Association (NAOAGA) Junior Championship in Easley, South Carolina, and secured a second-place finish. Her success is a powerful reminder that the game of golf – and life itself – is open to all, no matter the obstacles.

Hooper, who is missing her left hand, has been around golf her entire life. Her dad, Jason Hooper, is head golf coach at South High School. Ashtyn Hooper began at local practice facilities, increasing her strength to swing the club. She moved on to playing shortened holes and participated in First Tee classes at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

“We tried to keep it fun and let her go at her own pace,” explained Jason. “We wanted her to enjoy playing the game.” Her family was there to help creatively with challenges. “We made homemade prosthetics to help her attach her arm to the club, which allows her to swing with both arms,” said Jason.

Practice isn’t just about golf at the Hoopers.

 “Ashtyn is enjoying just being a kid and participating in a wide variety of activities such as tumbling, basketball, volleyball, singing and theatre. She loves being a student at Coronado Elementary School," Jason Hooper said.

The summer trip to South Carolina was a highlight for Ashtyn’s family. 

“It’s been such a blessing to discover all the opportunities that exist for kids with physical impairments,”Jason Hooper said. “It has been so much fun for her and our entire family to meet other people similar to Ashtyn and watch them excel in life, just as she has.”

“The trip was amazing,” she said. “I was so excited when I got second place and I can’t wait to do it again!”

The Royals won the day game 4-3 as Bobby Witt Jr.’s 27th homer — and 11th since July 19 — snapped a tie in the eighth inning.

In Game 2, Perez hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning — after nearly striking out — and then connected for his sixth career slam in the sixth off Pedro Avila.

More locally, with college football season officially underway Kansas Wesleyan is preparing for their season opener this Saturday, and will enter the new year ranked 24th in the country.

Kansas Wesleyan also led the Bissell Division with 11 players earning all-division preseason team honors, and picked to finish atop the KCAC Coaches Poll in the Bissell, level with Ottawa to start the year.

Among those honored for K-Dub were RB Luke Armstrong and Zarek Fewell, WR Rhadarious Lomax-Spivey, DE Josh King-Bradley, LB Quatama Massaqioi and DBs Julian Urioste and Jordan Dupre

CLEVELAND (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs as the Kansas City Royals completed a doubleheader sweep of Cleveland, beating the Guardians 9-4 on Monday night to pull within one game of first in the AL Central.

The nine-time All-Star catcher has 17 career multi-homer games, tying him with Hall of Famer George Brett for the most in Kansas City history.

Kansas City was nine games back in early July, but the Royals have chipped away at Cleveland's lead by posting an AL-best 22-13 record since the break.

The Guardians, who have led the division since April 14, dropped to 0-8 in doubleheaders this season.

Leading 5-4 in the sixth, the Royals loaded the bases and had a runner forced at the plate before Perez drove his 25th homer 457 feet into the bleachers. Perez's shot tied him with Frank White for the most slams in Royals history.

José Ramírez had three doubles, giving Cleveland's star third baseman two or more extra-base hits in 109 games to tie him with Tris Speaker for second in club history behind Earl Averill (135). Ramírez has also reached 30 homers, 30 doubles and 30 steals in a season for the second time.

Perez's homer in the fifth came one pitch after he caught a break.

He fouled back a 3-2 pitch that catcher Bo Naylor appeared to snare before it hit the ground. But plate umpire John Tumpane looked into Naylor's glove and noticed dirt on the ball, giving Perez new life.

With another chance, he pulled his 24th homer into the bleachers to give Kansas City a 5-4 lead.

Tumpane made the same call in the sixth, and this time Guardians pitching coach Carl Willis was ejected for arguing on behalf of reliever Pedro Avila.

Rookie Daniel Schneemann homered in the second game for Cleveland.

In the opener, Witt connected on a 0-1 pitch from rookie Hunter Gaddis (4-3), driving it 413 feet into the left-field bleachers.

The All-Star shortstop came in batting .417 since the break, the fourth-highest average (with at least 125 at-bats) in the second half since World War II. Only Ted Williams (.454 in 1957), Ichiro Suzuki (.429, 2004) and George Brett (.421, 1980) have hit higher.

It was just another noteworthy moment of many in 2024 for Witt.

“He's always present,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “He doesn't care what he's done prior or what he's going to do tomorrow. He's going to be in that box and trying to beat you right there. Bobby's a special player.”

MJ Melendez belted a three-run homer and made a sensational catch in left field for the Royals in Game 1.

John Schreiber (4-3) worked 1 2/3 innings and Lucas Erceg put the tying run on with a walk in the ninth before getting his fifth save since coming to Kansas City in a July 30 trade from Oakland.

Reliever Nick Sandlin made his first major league start for Cleveland in the opener. The right-hander hadn't started a game since his junior year at Southern Miss in 2018.

Royals: LHP Will Smith (back spasms) was placed on the 15-day injured list, one day after he allowed five runs in one inning against Philadelphia. Quatraro said Smith's back issue has “been lingering for a while.”

Guardians: RHP Alex Cobb (broken fingernail) didn't have any problems while throwing a bullpen session Sunday. He's scheduled to throw live batting practice Tuesday. Cobb was acquired at the trade deadline from San Francisco.

Guardians RHP Gavin Williams (2-6, 5.13 ERA) starts Tuesday against Royals RHP Michael Lorenzen (7-6, 3.47), who threw seven scoreless innings in his most recent outing.

The Coyotes were 4-1 in the Gene Bissell Division and shared the title with Ottawa but lost to the Braves in overtime in their head-to-head game allowing Ottawa to advance to NAIA postseason play.

"I think when you miss an opportunity like we had in the fashion that we missed it ... it's still on my mind and I think about it all the time," said Myers who is entering his third season as head coach. "We had a young team going in, a couple of our veteran offensive linemen were out and we had a freshman quarterback playing for us.

"The reality of it was we didn't score enough points last year."

Myers and his staff spent the offseason shoring up the offense and making sure a stellar defense remains that way.

KWU will fine tune things in its first six game against teams from the Ted Kessinger Division. After a bye week October 12, they begin play against their five opponents in the Bissell Division on October 19.

"That's the beauty of the way this thing's set up," Myers said. "You get the first half of the season to play conference opponents but really the division games are what matter."

Wesleyan enters the season tied for 24th with Friends in the NAIA Coaches Preseason Poll.

"I think we brought in some guys that are going to help us move the ball a little bit more," he said. "Be more effective in the run game and be efficient in the pass game. I feel good about our defense going into it.

"You combine that with some of the specialists we have coming back and coming in and I think we're set up for success. It'll be up to us to make sure we stay healthy and execute."

The Coyotes averaged 21.8 points last fall but Myers wants that number to increase significantly.

Improved offense, strong experienced defense leads Coyotes into 2024

It certainly was a learning experience for the group of girls under <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/9032ab46-fc73-4c2f-a4c9-1a747aefc1ef?elinkdata=11540">Melinda Nguyen</a>'s tutelage at the USA Football Select Bowl last month in Los Angeles.

The players were not the only ones who profited, though. Nguyen, who begins in her third season as flag football coach at Kansas Wesleyan this fall, says she learned as much or perhaps more than the 12 athletes in the 14-and-under age group she coached.

Girls were selected from regional talent camps during the spring and early summer or could register for the Select Bowl. The 14-under select camp served as a developmental program for the next age group.

After a difficult run in pool play and the first playoff game Thursday (0-3-1) Nguyen's team gained its stride in the bronze medal contest Friday.

"From the beginning we had great chemistry," she said of the event that was July 9-12. "The girls got along really great, really high energy, really a fun group. But when it came to games there was definitely a disconnect between my play calling versus what they were used to, maybe a little bit of a misunderstanding of what the reads were.

"So, we went back and we went over that and towards the end of the day we started really clicking, getting it together, but we just needed to finish. The next day we restarted and that's when everything just came together."

Players gathered on Tuesday, went through orientation, media day, reviewed the rules of the game and had a practice session. They practiced twice Wednesday and began play Thursday.

Nguyen is accustomed to coaching seven-on-seven competition in the college ranks but had to adjust to five-on-five in the camp. There also was the field that is roughly a quarter of the size of a collegiate field and games were drastically shorter time-wise.

And she had to get to know her team that was comprised of girls from Southern California, Las Vegas, Arizona, and Texas then determine their skill levels and capabilities in just two days.

Getting everyone on the same page did not immediately happen.

"They were some of the best players in their age group but there was a wide range of skills," she said. "A lot of it was my fault. I've coached fives before but at the adult level so I kind of forgot what are the differences are between a 14U versus an adult. I was overthinking plays that didn't work out the way that I thought."

"You don't need a million plays, you only need a solid six to 10 plays that work really well, that they know really well," she said. "I really had to simplify because of their age and their experience and really explain things in a lot more detail than I expected.

"Trying to simplify offenses and defenses to what works is something I'm going to pull over to sevens."

Working and talking with other flag coaches in attendance was especially beneficial.

"It was just a different type of brainstorming - I describe it as a huge think tank," Nguyen said. "I loved their openness. You're with some of the best coaches in the country and they're so willing to give advice and share ideas.
