Sacred Heart returned to the road Friday night to face a tough Smith Center team. 

As in previous games this season, penalties and injuries proved to be the biggest obstacles for the Knights to overcome.

The Knights rotated several players in and out of the game with varied amounts of playing experience at the varsity level. The deeper Redman roster was a big factor in the lopsided final score of 48-0.

Sacred Heart returns to Salina to face Republic County this Friday night. The Buffaloes (0-7) are still seeking their first win of the season while the Knights (1-6) will try to break a 3-game losing streak of their own.

Sacred Heart should be a stronger unit with some of their injured players being cleared to return to the field.

Sacred Heart Shutout at Smith Center 48-0; Republic County Up Next

STILLWATER, Okla. –&nbsp;The Oklahoma State Cowboys defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 39-32 on a windy Saturday afternoon inside Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Quarterback Jason Bean threw for five touchdowns and 410 yards, but it was not enough as Oklahoma State scored the final 15 points of the game. Oklahoma State improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play, while Kansas dropped to 5-2 on the season and 2-2 in conference action.

Oklahoma State wasted no time on its first possession, ripping off a 51-yard screen play on the first play from scrimmage. Just four plays later, the Cowboys reached the endzone on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Alan Bowman to Ollie Gordon to put Oklahoma State up, 7-0.

Oklahoma State would march down the field on a nine-play, 83-yard drive on its next possession to go up 14-0 just under eight minutes into the game.

Kansas responded with its own touchdown drive, as Bean found Trevor Wilson open for a 47-yard receiving touchdown to make it 14-7 with 5:14 remaining in the first quarter. The touchdown was Wilson’s third over his last three games, all of which have been 45+ yards.

After the quarter break, Kansas cut into Oklahoma State’s 17-7 lead with another passing touchdown, this time to tight end Mason Fairchild on a 30-yard strike over the middle.

Kansas took its first lead of the game at the 10:41 mark of the second quarter. Bean found Fairchild for his second receiving touchdown of the day on a 44-yard throw and catch. Kansas led 19-17.

After the Kansas touchdown, Oklahoma State responded with a 44-yard touchdown rush by Gordon. The Jayhawks would strike back on a 49-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Skinner to make it 25-24 at the half. Kansas struggled on extra-point attempts in the first half, failing to convert on three tries.

Much like the way Oklahoma State began the game, Kansas opened the second half with an eight-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in Skinner’s second touchdown of the day. Bean found Skinner open in the endzone on a 42-yard play to put Kansas up, 32-24. Oklahoma State responded with a field goal on the next drive to make the score 32-27, which remained the score at the end of the third quarter.

The Cowboys converted a KU turnover into a field goal with 11:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. After a Kansas turnover on downs, Oklahoma State went 50 yards in nine plays that ended with a 6-yard rush by Brennan Presley to give Oklahoma State a 36-32 lead with 2:33 left in the game. A field goal with 0:15 remaining pushed the Cowboys lead to 39-32, where the game ultimately ended.

Kansas now enters its bye week, before playing Oklahoma on Saturday, October 28 in Lawrence. The meeting with the Sooners will be the 134th in the series history, in which Oklahoma leads 80-27-6 all-time, including a 37-14-3 advantage in games played in Lawrence.

The Southeast of Saline cross country teams continued asserting their dominance over the rest of the NCAA on Thursday, sweeping yet another league meet.

This marks the fifth straight league title for the Lady Trojans and the 7th for the Trojans, both by wide margins.

Each team finished well ahead of the next closest competition as the girls finished with 30 points, 43 ahead of second-place Sacred Heart, and the boys finished with 18, 67 ahead of Beloit-St. Johns.

SES XC Sweeps Fifth Consecutive League Meet

Following a Kansas Conference-wide bye week the Coyotes play league foe Avila on Saturday. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Zarda Multisport Complex in Kansas City, Missouri.

Saturday's game will be the sixth between the two schools. KWU has a 3-2 lead in the series but Avila has won two of the last three including an 18-14 victory last season at JRI Stadium. The Eagles won 30-20 in Kansas City in 2021 and KWU 46-38 in 2020 at Graves Family Sports Complex.

The Coyotes won three games in a row before taking last Saturday off that was part of the KCAC-wide bye week. They defeated McPherson 10-7 September 30 in McPherson before the break. The defense was superb once again limiting the Bulldogs to 297 yards and 35 points below their season average.

After going 4-2 against teams in the Dr. Ted Kessinger Division the Coyotes' the last five games will be against their opponents in the Gene Bissell Division. The division winners receive berths in the NAIA playoffs.

KWU's opponents are averaging 15.5 points and 288.7 yards per game – 135 rushing and 153.7 passing. The Coyotes are averaging 18.3 points and 253 yards – 127.8 rushing and 125.2 passing.

Freshman quarterback Byron McNair made his college debut in the third quarter against McPherson and led the Coyotes on a game-winning 75-yard, nine-play drive in the fourth quarter. He was 7 of 11 passing for 115 yards and had 15 yards rushing on seven carries. Richard Lara started the game and was 7 of 16 for 54 yards.

Coach Matt Myers said a decision on Saturday's starting quarterback would be made later in the week. 

The Eagles have lost five in a row since defeating Bethany in the season opener. They lost to Evangel 44-6 in their game before the break and fell to McPherson 42-21 the previous week.

Opponents have averaged 42.3 points and 476.3 yards this season. Avila is averaging 26.7 points and 353.5 yards (224.7 passing) per game.

Quarterback Eli Williams has had a terrific sophomore season thus far. A transfer from TCU before last season the 6-foot-4 Williams has thrown for 1,334 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also has a team-best 313 yards rushing and seven more touchdowns. 

Williams threw for 140 yards, two touchdowns and had 43 yards rushing in Avila's victory over KWU last season.

Kareem Chambers (22 receptions, 225 yards) and Robert Brooks (20-227) are the top wide receivers in 2023. Three others have at least 13 catches.

"(Williams) is the most talented player we'll probably play against. He put up 40-plus (points) on Southwestern, he'll be a challenge to say the least. He's tall, he's fast, and he can see everything. Our job will be to contain him as much as humanly possible and force him to do some things that he's not used to doing, hopefully. We need to keep him in the pocket and make him uncomfortable. Their skill positions are really good, their tailbacks are good, their wide receivers are really good. They're a little young up front. The game is the reverse of the first half of the season when we played a lot of run-heavy teams; (Avila) throws it 80 percent of the time."

"We are going to evaluate it and put the best guy out there (at quarterback) that we think can sustain drives, make really good decisions and score points."

"Whoever dreamt up the (new KCAC) schedule was a genius. (The bye) was really nice, everyone got to relax for a week. It was a welcome respite."

The Coyotes play Saint Mary in their homecoming game at 5 p.m. Saturday at JRI Stadium.

KWU Coyotes travel to Avila, kickoff at 1 p.m.

Fourteen years ago, Southeast of Saline hired Mitch Gebhardt to lead their football program.

In the decade and change since, Coach Gebhardt has led his Trojans to ten playoff wins, eight league titles, four district championships, and two appearances in the 2A state quarterfinals, with a trip to the semis in 2022.

On Friday, the legendary head coach added another milestone to his already stellar resume, as a convincing 60-7 victory over Lyons marks the 100th win of his time in Gypsum.

“It takes a lot of people to make this thing work and my assistant coaches are unreal,” Gebhardt said. “This staff has been together for nine years and everyone that’s been a part of this has been so great. I’d also like to thank the Southeast of Saline community for everything they do, this is a great place to be. All of my kids are going to go all the way through school here, and I’m proud of that.”

From the beginning, this game was never in doubt, as the Trojans followed a 94-point victory over the Lions in 2022 with a 53-point victory in 2023.

Nathan Friesen headlined the Trojan attack, posting yet another 100+ yard, four-touchdown game, made all the more impressive by the fact that all of that work came in just the first two quarters.

Gebhardt Collects 100th win in Gypsum as Trojans Roll Lyons 60-7

On Friday night, Salina Central and Goddard played what might just go down as the most insane finish in the state of Kansas this year, as the Lions escaped with a 42-35 win over the Mustangs.

With less than 7:00 remaining, the Lions held a convincing but not insurmountable 34-20 lead.

Central drove the ball to the Goddard goal line, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty turned fourth and goal from the six into fourth and goal from the 21, and a hold not only wiped a touchdown off the board, it drove the Mustangs behind the 30.

After turning the ball over on downs, it looked like the Lions would run out the clock and hold onto their two-score lead, but Goddard regifted the penalty yardage and was forced to punt from their own end zone.

Smelling blood in the water, the Mustangs pounced as a low snap resulted in a blocked punt, which Central recovered in the end zone to cut the lead to 7.

Needing the onside kick, the Mustangs turned to Elijah Duxler to recover the ball he himself kicked, and while the ball failed to travel the required ten yards, it did make contact with a Lion before being recovered by Central, giving the Salina sideline new life.

Anyone who’s followed the Mustangs this year knows what comes next.

Jack Gordon dropped back from the Lion 47 and delivered a dime to Ryker Grossner who took it the rest of the way to paydirt to put Central within one.

Not content to send the game to a likely overtime the Mustangs ran a fake PAT that saw Gordon pitch the ball to Mowery on a rollout, and the receiver delivered a dime of his own to Grossner, sealing the two-point conversion and delivering Central a 35-34 lead.

With under 2:00 to go against an offense that didn’t attempt a pass until week three, the one thing the Mustangs couldn’t afford was a busted kick return coverage, but Micah Johnson had plans of his own, fielding the ball at his own 15 before exploding down the sideline for an 85-yard touchdown return and his fourth touchdown of the day.

Central would get the ball back for one final gasp, but an acrobatic toe-tapping interception in the back of the end zone put the game on ice as the Lions held on for dear life for a 42-35 win.

With this result, both teams will enter the final week of the regular season at 5-3.

The Mustangs will be back in action next Friday when they play host to 1-6 Ark City.

State Announces WBB Single-Game Ticket Info, Game Promotions

With another senior night fast at hand, the Solomon Gorillas (2-4) will return home to battle the surging Herington Railers (4-2) on Friday night.

Both teams will be in search of a bounce back after falling to an 8-man power a week ago, as Solomon dropped their game with #3 Moundridge (6-0), and Herington fell in just their second loss of the season to Little River (4-2).

Solomon’s 2-4 record is a bit deceiving, as the Gorillas have gone toe to toe with some of the best competition in the state this season, they themselves lining up against Little River and 3rd-ranked Canton-Galva earlier this year.

Despite facing a gauntlet of a schedule, Solomon has chosen to grow through those games, rather than be frustrated by the results.

“We either win or we learn here and even when we win we’re learning lessons,” Gorilla head coach Andrew Capsey said. “We want to play against good competition and being able to face teams like that has made us better. It helps our guys understand what it takes to get to that level.”

Now, Solomon turns its attention to a rising Herington program, that has gotten off to a great start after struggling for the better part of the last decade.

Much of that success has come in the Railer’s ability to vary up their offensive attack and keep opposing defenses guessing week in and week out.

“Herington is probably the most balanced team we’ve played all season with a good mix of pass and run,” Capsey said. “They’ll play power football but sometimes they’ll spread it out and they have some really great athletes.”

While Herington has had the offense rolling all season, their defense has been far from impenetrable, allowing 20 or more in all but one of their first six contests.

“They stay in two different defensive sets for the most part and they don’t show any set tendencies,” he said. “Our guys will have to be prepared for both and they’re very disciplined so we’ll have to play really sound football this week.”

This matchup has also bloomed into a big one on the calendar between the two programs, and tensions will run high come kickoff this week.

“This is definitely a rivalry game so the records go out the window and the guys will be ready to go,” Capsey said. “It’s senior night so we want to get a big win for those guys to send them out the right way. If we win the turnover battle and fly around on defense we’ll be just fine.”

Kickoff between the Gorillas and Railers is set for 7:00 at Solomon High School.

Gorillas Host Herington in Search of Big Senior Night Win

Salina Central has developed a reputation this season as the cardiac kids of Class 5A.

In week four, the Mustangs eeked out a win over Andover on a fake PAT in the waning seconds, in week five, their defense was forced to make a stop in the red zone to halt the advance of Valley Center, and last week, it was the defense that once again came up with a fourth-quarter stop to hold on for a one-point victory.

Now, Central (5-1) returns to Salina to face yet another strong AVCTL-II foe in the Goddard Lions (4-2), who will present a unique challenge for the Mustangs.

“Our league absolutely prepares us for 5A playoff football,” Central head coach Mark Sandbo said. “You have to play your best football week in and week our and I know we all beat each other up but it really does get us ready to play in November.”

While the Mustangs have faced run-heavy units like Valley Center in the past, Goddard takes that philosophy to a whole new extreme, proud of their last-place passing offense that didn’t so much as attempt to put the ball in the air until week three.

The Lions have ground several of their opponents into a fine powder with their rushing attack, that averages 278 yards per game on the ground, ensuring that even the most elite offensive units spend a majority of the game on the sideline.

“Goddard definitely has an identity on both sides of the ball,” Sandbo said. All the great programs do. They’re very content to run the football downhill and they have some variants to keep you honest but Coach Beason has done a great job in his time at Goddard and he’ll have his kids ready come Friday night.”

The three-headed monster that makes this unit go consists of a trio of senior backs in Micah Johnson, Tyson Wallace, and Mason Healy, who combine to average a staggering seven yards per carry through six games.

 </figure>Salina Central has developed a reputation this season as the cardiac kids of Class 5A.In week four, the Mustangs eeked out a win over Andover on a fake PAT in the waning seconds, in week five, their defense was forced to make a stop in the red zone to halt the advance of Valley Center, and last week, it was the defense that once again came up with a fourth-quarter stop to hold on for a one-point victory.Now, Central (5-1) returns to Salina to face yet another strong AVCTL-II foe in the Goddard Lions (4-2), who will present a unique challenge for the Mustangs.“Our league absolutely prepares us for 5A playoff football,” Central head coach Mark Sandbo said. “You have to play your best football week in and week our and I know we all beat each other up but it really does get us ready to play in November.”While the Mustangs have faced run-heavy units like Valley Center in the past, Goddard takes that philosophy to a whole new extreme, proud of their last-place passing offense that didn’t so much as attempt to put the ball in the air until week three.The Lions have ground several of their opponents into a fine powder with their rushing attack, that averages 278 yards per game on the ground, ensuring that even the most elite offensive units spend a majority of the game on the sideline.“Goddard definitely has an identity on both sides of the ball,” Sandbo said. All the great programs do. Mustangs Return Home to Face Goddard Seeking Fifth-Straight Win

The road won’t get any easier for the Sacred Heart football team this week, as the Knights go from facing a formerly state-ranked foe at home, to a currently ranked opponent on the road.

The Knights (1-5), enter this contest fresh off a 30-6 loss at the hands of now 4-2 Wabaunsee and will travel north to take on the #5 team in Class 1A in Smith Center (5-1).

For Sacred Heart, much of the struggle this season has been due to a slew of injuries, as the Knights trot out a different lineup seemingly every week.

This came to a head in the Wabaunsee matchup, as Sacred Heart started just three of its original 11 starters on one side of the ball.

“You need personnel to play together and be on the same page if you’re going to have any success in the passing game,” Knights head coach Norm Jennings said. “If you want to run it well you have to have confidence in your lead blockers. I think they’re doing everything they can do figuring out how to function with different guys lining up to the left and right each week.”

No respite will be given to Sacred Heart this week as the Knights travel to face a Smith Center squad that has flattened three of its last four opponents, winning the other game 16-14 over the aforementioned Chargers.

Much of that success has come on the back of a strong running game, which averages 218 yards a contest on the ground thanks to strong blocking and misdirection.

“Smith Center reloads well every year and they’ve got some new kids but on film they keep getting better each week,” Jennings said. “Offensively you have to play assignment-sound football against them and you have to stay at home, if they do that for the entirety of the game we’ll have a good battle on our hands.”

On the defensive end, Smith Center allows the third-fewest points per game (9.7), and the fourth-fewest yards per game (204) of any other 1A unit.

While an upset win on the road is far from out of reach for the Knights, Sacred Heart will have to take better care of the football to give themselves a chance, as turnovers have plagued the offense all season long.

“We still have more total yards than our opponents this season but we’ve had 19 turnovers to just two forced,” Jennings said. “We realize that those not only change momentum but often result in scores that impact the game as well. We need to keep our passes clean and make sure our exchanges are good and we’ve been working on that.”

Knights Travel to 5th-Ranked Smith Center in Search of Upset Win

After two weeks away from home, the Southeast of Saline football team (6-0), still ranked as the #4 squad in Class 2A, will return to Gypsum to square off with the winless Lyons Lions (0-6).

The Trojans come into this game fresh off of a convincing 46-14 win over Hillsboro despite suffering five turnovers in an otherwise comfortable victory.

“We dealt with some adversity in that game and those turnovers put our defense in some bad spots but we kept playing hard,” SES head coach Mitch Gebhardt said. “The defense only gave up one touchdown and that’s big against a team that throws the ball as good as they do.”

Now, SES gets a brief respite in the midst of a stretch that sees them play three of their final four games on the road, and will have the opportunity to celebrate senior night against a team they manhandled a season ago.

“It’s always great to play at home,” Gebhardt said. “We have great fans, we’re comfortable here and it’s always good to play in front of them. We did a good job of handling those road games but now we get to be back in Gypsum.”

In their 2022 matchup with the Lions, the Trojans led 46-0 after the first quarter, 74-0 at the half, and 94-0 when all was said and done, without the aid of a single starter throughout the second half.

This year could bring more of the same, as Lyons has stumbled out of the gates to an 0-6 record, holding a point differential of -282 with just two games remaining in their season.

The Lions have struggled mightily on both sides of the ball, allowing the most points (49), and the fifth most yards (343) per game of any team in Class 2A, while also contributing the fewest points (2), and yards (84) on average.

Worse yet has been Lyons run game, which has gone in reverse this season to the tune of -41 net yards on the season.

Despite all of this, Southeast will prepare for this contest just like any other, refusing to sacrifice their ideals regardless of the opponent in front of them.

“We’re going to have to play good team defense against them and we want to continue operating effectively no matter what they throw at us because they change up what they do quite a bit,” Gebhardt said. “We have to be locked in when the game starts. It’s senior night for us and we want to play at our highest level throughout the game.”

Trojans Return Home for Senior Night as Heavy Favorites

<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/3ad0de91-59b3-44a2-a85c-35694c139556?elinkdata=1662" target="_blank">Anthony Monson</a>&nbsp;is ready for his Kansas Wesleyan basketball team to take the next step.

Following back-to-back appearances in the second round of the NAIA Championships the Coyotes' goal entering the 2023-24 season is a trip to the Round of 16 in Kansas City, Missouri.

"Anytime you get to go to nationals for two straight years and get to the second round for two straight years and bring all these guys back it makes your job as a coach a lot easier," Monson said Thursday during the Kansas Conference's Virtual Media Day. "I'm looking forward to what they can do this year. We're hoping to take that next step, try to get to Kansas City but the (KCAC) is absolutely loaded."

The Coyotes were picked second in the conference coaches' and media preseason polls released Thursday night. Defending champion Oklahoma Wesleyan was first in both.

KWU received 152 points and one first-place vote in the coaches' poll while OKWU had 168 points and 12 first-place votes. The Coyotes had 160 points and two first-place votes in the media poll; OKWU 179 points and 11 first-place votes. Southwestern was third, conference newcomer Evangel fourth and Bethel fifth in both polls.

Monson has a veteran and talented team to work with this winter. All five starters and eight of the top 10 return from last year's squad that finished 26-5 overall and was second in the conference at 19-3. KWU is 49-16 over the last two seasons.

"Obviously, we've had two really good years with this group," he said. "Anytime you return returned five starters that's always a good thing after coming off some successful seasons."

The returning cast is led by forward&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/0a17180e-4c5e-4725-955d-c04ef2126a57?elinkdata=1662" target="_blank">Alex Littlejohn</a>&nbsp;and point guard&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d95154af-73d4-4603-b0e9-1f4174babc68?elinkdata=1662" target="_blank">Jun Murdock</a>. Littlejohn earned Third Team All-America honors last season after averaging 14.2 points and 11.1 rebounds. Murdock, the team's irrepressible floor leader, averaged 11.6 points, 2.9 assists and is a defensive stalwart.

"He can shoot it all the way up to the 3-point line and can put it on the floor," Monson said. "Very good rebounder especially on the offensive end and is a really good complement to Thurbil and Alex."

<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/e866966d-a600-4d1d-8057-d4d62c545ccc?elinkdata=1662" target="_blank">Chase Ferguson</a>, a 6-6 guard, is a freshman of note.

"He can really shoot it, has a natural feel for the game, moves extremely well and cuts extremely well," Monson said. "He's been a nice change of pace with some of the guys that we have."

The Coyotes open the season October 27 and 28 in the Bellevue Classic against Dickinson State (27th) and Bellevue (28th). Their first two home games are November 3 (Morningside) and November 4 (Briar Cliff) before contests against William Woods on November 10 and Peru State on November 11 in the Bethel Classic.

Conference play begins November 15 when Friends comes to Mabee Arena.

"Obviously, the KCAC will be the biggest challenge," Monson said. "We're looking forward to the competition and everything that goes with it."
