Roger Kent Wood August 31, 1959 ~ November 24, 2023

Roger Kent Wood, 64, of Salina, passed away Friday, November 24th, 2023.

Roger was born in Caldwell, Idaho, on August 31, 1959, a son of Jeannie Nevada (Busby) Hise and Doyle Donald Wood. He spent most of his life in Salina, Kansas.

He owned KRC Power Wash Inc. He was a member of Salina AM Ambucs, where he assisted in building ramps for individuals with mobility challenges, and was a Chapter 62 American Legion Rider.

Roger was a huge supporter of the military, he loved spending time with his family, loved the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, Fishing, and riding his Harley Davidson.

On October 12, 2002, Roger married Leslie Webb.

Survivors include his wife, Leslie; daughter, Kira Wood, of Hutchinson, Kansas;&nbsp;son, Kent Wood (Jaime), of Derby, Kansas; stepdaughter, Tiffany Walker (Steve), of Titusville, Florida; and siblings, Kandi Renshaw (Al), of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Kevin Wood (Patti), of Salina, and Ronald Wood, of Salina.

He is also survived by grandchildren, Phoebe, Brytanny, Derrek; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald Wood.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, November 29th at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, Salina.

Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Riders or Tammy Walker Cancer Center, in care of the funeral home.

Martha Alyne Bolliger, 86, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, KS.

Martha was born on November 15, 1937 in Gillespie, IL to James &amp; Martha Jane Meece.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers James “Moose”, Robert, Charles “Red”, Donald “Doc”, Larry and Jerry, and her sister Helen “Jenny”.

Martha is survived by 1 brother and 5 sisters, her 6 children. Robert Furness (Theresa), Charles Furness (Carrie) Daniel Furness, Joanie “Sis” (Allan Jensen) Janie Morris (Chris) and Jeanie Blake. 7 Grandchildren, Gordon, Molly, Kaylee, Mitchell, Faith, Christian and Brooke as well as 10 Great-Grandchildren.

A special Thank You to her oldest daughter Joanie “Sis” for all of the dedication, time and effort spent making sure our mother was well taken care of. You are an angel.

Thomas James Rouse March 17, 1937 ~ November 22, 2023

Thomas James Rouse, 86, was born March 15, 1937 in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His life’s work here on earth ended on November 22, 2023.

Tom grew up in South Milwaukee.&nbsp; His entire neighborhood was his backyard full of constant playmates and friends, especially his Rouse cousins. He would walk the two blocks almost daily to serve at early morning mass. He enjoyed his work as a teenager at Grant Park golf course on Lake Michigan. He attended St. John’s grade school, Marquette High School and graduated from Marquette University.

Tom married his high school sweetheart, his beloved “Schatzy,” Florence Sulewski, on August 16, 1958. As a family, they moved to Columbia, South Carolina and later settled in Kansas in 1975. He was well-respected in manufacturing, working as an accountant, a controller, and eventually, the President of Superior Boiler Works in Hutchinson, Kansas.

In Hutchinson, Tom and Florence were extremely involved with their church, community and kids’ sporting events, having spent many years volunteering together with the Hutchinson High School Cross Country team. He often led the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross at Holy Cross Church. Tom also volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels, and the Kansas Golf and Youth Golf Association. Whether in these endeavors or over a game of cards, cribbage or dominos, Tom shined as a talented conversationalist. He had a laugh that made those around him join in, and to say “he never knew a stranger” was an understatement.

When their kids went to college, they became true K-State fans, with Tom wearing purple and white at countless games with his family. When not supporting the Wildcats, he was an enthusiastic fan of the Royals and the Chiefs.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Gertrude, his beloved wife Florence, infant son Donald, grandson Jackson Rouse, his sister Mary Ellen (Rouse) Oswald and in-laws Rudy Oswald, Eddie &amp; Arleen Sulewski and Roger Rayeske.

Tom leaves behind his family that will miss him dearly, including his children Barbara Ehr (John), Jim Rouse (Cindy), Susan Williams (Gary), Mike Rouse (Dawn) and Jeff Rouse (Angela), as well as grandchildren, Chris Ehr (Angi), Jodi Tuite (Michael), Emily Budden (Ted), Hillary Richards (Tate), Abby Baez (Ozzy), Thomas Williams, Lauren Rouse, Nathan Rouse, Katy Rouse and Megan Rouse and great-grandchildren, Aubree, Spencer, Kerrigan, Emsley, Henry, Benjamin, Everett, Natalie, Cohen, Rosie and Josemaria, his sister-in-law, Dorothy Rayeske, and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass for Tom will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Salina, KS.&nbsp; Visitation will be at Ryan Mortuary, Friday, December 1st from 4 – 6 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church Endowment Fund.&nbsp; A private burial will be held at later date.

Carl Vernon “Buck” Nelson August 10, 1941 ~ November 20, 2023

Carl Vernon “Buck” Nelson, 82, of Marquette passed away Monday, November 20, 2023. Buck was born August 10, 1941 in Lindsborg. He is the son of the late Vernon E. and the late Mildred M. (Stromberg) Nelson.  

Buck worked as an oil field worker, construction worker, and factory worker.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and all-around outdoorsman.  He served as a volunteer firefighter on the Marquette Fire Department.  Buck also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and squirrels.

Survivors include his daughter: Nicole Koehn (Mike) of Canton, KS; and his step grandson: Chance Koehn of McPherson, KS; as well as a niece, nephews, several great and great great nieces &amp; nephews.

Buck is preceded in death by his parents; son: Bucky Braden; and sisters: Karen Deatherage and Ruby LeGron.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 26 from 5-7PM at Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg, KS.

The funeral will be held 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 27 at Freemount Lutheran Church, 2511 8th Ave, Rural Lindsborg.  Burial will follow in Freemount Lutheran Cemetery.

Jerry MacArthur Scott July 14, 1942 ~ November 19, 2023

Jerry MacArthur Scott, 81, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away November 19, 2023. Jerry was born in Tampa, Florida July 14, 1942, to Elijah and Edna (Folds) Scott. He grew up in Georgia, fishing and hunting and spending summers on his grandparent’s farm. He graduated from Bainbridge High School, Bainbridge, GA.

Jerry served his country in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Schilling Air Force Base, Salina. He married Sharon Sheridan on June 11, 1967, in Salina. He retired as Fire Marshall of the Salina Fire Dept after 32 years. Scott branched into accident prevention serving on the Saline County Safe Kids board and helping secure grants for child safety seats and smoke alarms. He worked with the Kansas legislature as member and president of the Fire Education Association of Kansas to implement a mandatory smoke detection law for Kansas homes. He mentored youth as a Scoutmaster of Boy Scouts of America Troop #3, Salina in the 1980s. He was owner of Scott’s Taxidermy for many years; showing his love of nature.

As a member of the 1st United Methodist Church, Salina for 43 years, he served as a head usher and on many committees. He dearly loved his family and was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, William Wells; and stepbrothers, Harvey and Charles Wells.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sharon; son, Jerry; grandsons, Luke and Jackson Scott; step grandsons, Levi Sanderson; sisters, Joyce (Clint) Hillburn, Becky (Owen (Grimsley) and Shirley (Jack) Ellis; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and sister-in-law, Edith Hummer, Ft. Worth, Tx.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, November 27, 2023, at the Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Burial will be in the Carneiro Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to 1st United Methodist Church, the Emergency Aid Food Bank or the Rescue Mission, all of Salina.

Joseph Alan Heinrich March 10, 1948 ~ November 21, 2023

Joseph Alan Heinrich, 75, passed away peacefully in his home in Salina, KS on November 21, 2023, after his private battle with cancer.&nbsp; He was born in North Platte, NE on March 10, 1948, to Ruby and Benjamin Heinrich where they resided on their family farm in Paxton, NE with his sister (Eileen) and his brothers (Harvey and Paul). &nbsp;

Joe attended school in Paxton through his graduation from Paxton High School in 1966, where he and his beloved wife, Kathy were high school sweethearts.&nbsp; While at Paxton High, Joe participated, and lettered in football, basketball, and track for four years. He was Student Council President, Annual Staff Co-Editor, and Homecoming King.&nbsp; &nbsp;

He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church, beginning at Trinity Lutheran Church in Paxton, where he was baptized, confirmed, and participated in choir.&nbsp; Later he joined Redeemer Lutheran Church in Salina where he was involved in various roles, including church council, lector, usher, and altar guild.

After high school, Joe moved to Kearney, NE to attend Kearney State College, where he studied Business Administration.&nbsp; He was actively involved in his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon while he remained studious.&nbsp; He also enjoyed competing in Bridge tournaments, ultimately earning a 3rd place finish in the National Intercollegiate Pair Title tournament.&nbsp; While in Kearney, Joe and Kathy married in 1969 and later welcomed two sons, Bryan and Brett.&nbsp; Joe began working in the fire sprinkler industry at Bamford Inc, until relocating to Salina, KS in 1976.&nbsp; Here, they started Bamford Fire Sprinkler Company with humble beginnings out of their home, eventually expanding to Shawnee Mission, KS. In Salina, they also welcomed their favorite daughter, Andrea.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Joe became involved in the American Fire Sprinkler Association in 1982, serving on multiple committees and, since 2004, the board of directors.&nbsp; Eventually, he was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors from 2013-2014.&nbsp; During his tenure on the board, Joe demonstrated leadership with integrity that included the vision and inception of the NextGen Initiative.&nbsp; He made many dear, life-long friends and remained actively involved in board meetings following his time as Chairman.

Joe’s passion for and involvement in youth activities, particularly baseball, in Salina allowed him to enrich the lives of thousands of youths through team sponsorships including the framing and construction of batting cages at many local schools and fields.&nbsp; In the words of Mike Garretson, “If you strike out, don’t blame Joe Heinrich!”&nbsp; He used his time and talents to support the American Legion, Babe Ruth, and many youth baseball programs.&nbsp; Most notably, he was co-director for the American Legion Grand Slam Tournament for approximately 17 years, beginning in the early 1990’s.&nbsp; He, along with good buddies, Kent Lambert and Larry “Doc” St. Clair, organized the tournament for many years after their own sons finished playing Legion baseball.

In his “spare time,” Joe could be found watching and listening to sports of nearly any variety and listening to talk radio.&nbsp; His favorite teams included the Nebraska Huskers, Royals, and Chiefs.&nbsp; Joe enjoyed bowling, playing rounds of golf during his travels for board trips, taking his grandchildren to the driving range, and spoiling his family - especially his grandkids.&nbsp; But his favorite pastime was attending his grandchildren’s sports and activities for Southeast of Saline, Chapman, and Manhattan.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Ruby, brother Harvey, and sister Eileen.&nbsp; He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, sons Bryan (Katie) Heinrich and Brett (Trina) Heinrich, daughter Andrea (Brandon) Van Meter, and brother Paul (Janet) Heinrich.&nbsp; He has seven grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Ben Heinrich, Isaac Van Meter, Reese Heinrich, Jacob Van Meter, Madilyn Heinrich, Zoey Van Meter, and Gabriella Heinrich, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He knew no strangers and made friends everywhere he went.&nbsp; Joe left a lasting impression on so many with his huge heart, authenticity, integrity and generosity.&nbsp; To his family, we knew him best for always doing what was right and honorable with humility and good cheer.&nbsp; Up to the end, he maintained his sense of humor, catching us off-guard at times with a well-timed wise crack.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM (family present from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM) at Ryan Mortuary (137 N. 8th St. Salina, KS).&nbsp; His memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 10:30 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church (743 E. Magnolia Rd. Salina, KS).&nbsp; Inurnment will follow the funeral service at Gypsum Hill Cemetery (2020 E. Iron St.).&nbsp; Following the burial, a celebration of life will be held at The Venue (638 Francis St.).&nbsp; Lunch and drinks will be served, and we invite everyone to join the family as we remember the Legend.

 </figure>Joseph Alan Heinrich March 10, 1948 ~ November 21, 2023Joseph Alan Heinrich, 75, passed away peacefully in his home in Salina, KS on November 21, 2023, after his private battle with cancer.&nbsp; He was born in North Platte, NE on March 10, 1948, to Ruby and Benjamin Heinrich where they resided on their family farm in Paxton, NE with his sister (Eileen) and his brothers (Harvey and Paul). &nbsp;Joe attended school in Paxton through his graduation from Paxton High School in 1966, where he and his beloved wife, Kathy were high school sweethearts.&nbsp; While at Paxton High, Joe participated, and lettered in football, basketball, and track for four years. He was Student Council President, Annual Staff Co-Editor, and Homecoming King.&nbsp; &nbsp;He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church, beginning at Trinity Lutheran Church in Paxton, where he was baptized, confirmed, and participated in choir.&nbsp; Later he joined Redeemer Lutheran Church in Salina where he was involved in various roles, including church council, lector, usher, and altar guild.After high school, Joe moved to Kearney, NE to attend Kearney State College, where he studied Business Administration.&nbsp; He was actively involved in his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon while he remained studious.&nbsp; He also enjoyed competing in Bridge tournaments, ultimately earning a 3rd place finish in the National Intercollegiate Pair Title tournament.&nbsp; While in Kearney, Joe and Kathy married in 1969 and later welcomed two sons, Bryan and Brett.&nbsp; Joe began working in the fire sprinkler industry at Bamford Inc, until relocating to Salina, KS in 1976.&nbsp; Here, they started Bamford Fire Sprinkler Company with humble beginnings out of their home, eventually expanding to Shawnee Mission, KS. Joan Lundberg Kern, 94, of Marquette, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday,
November 12, 2023, at Riverview with loving caregivers at her bedside. Joan was
born November 3, 1929, in New Gotland, KS, at her Aunt Edna’s farm, to Ed and
Virginia (Johnston) Lundberg.



She is loved and missed by her daughter Stephanie Wiley, son-in-law Bill,
grandson Brooke, dear sister Joyce DaCosta, precious friends and cousins. Joan
and Joyce’s sister, Marlene Burriss, passed away in 2018. Joan’s nieces and
nephews remember Aunt Jo’s kindness and humor.



A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2023, at
Elim Lutheran Church, 403 N. Lincoln St., Marquette, KS. Friend and Pastor to

Connie Sue Richardson, age 73, of Pomona, KS, passed away November 17, 2023, at AdventHealth Ottawa.

Connie was born October 1, 1950, in Westphalia, KS, the daughter of Leonard Mattson and Gearldine (Atkinson) Mattson. Connie grew up and lived almost her entire life in the Franklin County area.

Connie was a waitress at L &amp; L Café, Ottawa and Reno’s in Ottawa.&nbsp; She baby sat for many years for family and friends.&nbsp; She worked for almost ten years at MAC Fasteners, Ottawa, as an assembly line worker.

Connie loved to fish.&nbsp; She enjoyed being out in nature and fishing was the perfect opportunity for her to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.&nbsp; She dearly loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren, always finding extra time for them to spend with her.&nbsp; One way she showed her love for her entire family was through her cooking.&nbsp; She was an incredible cook and made many wonderful meals for her loved ones but she was most famous in her family for her baking, especially her cookies.

On January 20, 1972, Connie was united in marriage to Billy D. Richardson in Pomona, KS.&nbsp;They shared fifty years of marriage until Billy passed away on December 29, 2022.

Connie is also preceded in death by her parents, Leornard and Gearaldine Mattson; and three sisters, Betty LaRue, Bonnie Brannan, and Sandy Glazer.

She is survived by two children, Billy Richardson, Jr., Pomona, KS, Andy Gunn, Elizabethtown, TN; three siblings, Donna Weiderholt, Ottawa, KS, Buella Grahm, Iowa, Ray Wards, Garnett, KS; four grandchildren, Britten Richardson, Ottawa, Nova Richardson, Pomona, Billy Lamm, Ottawa, Cullen Streeter, Walsenburg, CO; and three great-grandchildren, Oliver, Elinor, and Olivia.

David E. Barton, Jr., age 53, of Ottawa, KS, passed away November 15, 2023, at University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.

David was born April 19, 1970, in Atchison, KS, the son of David Eugene Barton, Sr. and Lillie (Kline) Barton. David graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1988.&nbsp;

David recently worked for Domino’s Pizza, Ottawa, KS and American Eagle Focus workforce.&nbsp; Previously he worked for seven years at McDonald’s in Ottawa and ten years at Wal-Mart in Ottawa.

David never knew a stranger he was always kind and quick to help anyone in need.&nbsp; He had no enemies.&nbsp; He was a drummer for various bands for thirty-seven years and loved his drums.&nbsp;&nbsp; Was an avid Kansas City, Chiefs fan and also enjoyed K.U. sports.&nbsp; David loved his jobs and always made his co-workers smile but most important to David was his beloved wife, Shelly. He loved her dearly and it was obvious to everyone of their family and friends how special she was to David.

On May 29, 2009, David was united in marriage to Shelly Hulcy in Ottawa, KS.&nbsp;They shared fourteen years of marriage.

David is survived by his wife, Shelly Barton, Ottawa; his mother, Lillie Barton, Ottawa, Ks; &nbsp;three step children, William Hulcy, Garnett, Ks, LeeAnn Lines, Texas, Spencer Hulcy and his wife, Cheyenne, Garnett, KS; three brothers, John Barton and his wife, Renee, Wellsville, KS, Mike Markgraf and Tiffany, Texas, Matthew Markgraf, Texas; and ten grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father David Eugene Barton, Sr.

Daryl J. Makowski October 27, 1963 ~ November 14, 2023

Daryl Jo Makowski, 60, of Carbondale, Kansas, peacefully left this earth to go fishing in Heaven on November 14, 2023. He was surrounded by family and friends during his last days. Daryl fought a long and courageous battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease for many years.&nbsp;

Daryl was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 27, 1963, to Stan and Jean Makowski, who preceded him in death. He grew up in Chicago and his family moved to Crystal Lake, Illinois after his 4th grade year. This is where he developed his love for animals, being outside and family. He graduated from Central High School in Crystal Lake in 1981.

Daryl leaves behind the love of his life, Beckie, who he met in 1991, after he relocated to Carbondale, Kansas. They married on October 26, 1993, the day between their birthdays. He claimed he could never forget their anniversary that way. They were blessed with 30 years of marriage, two beautiful children, Jacob and Morgan (Michael), and a beloved grandson, Landon, all of whom miss him dearly.&nbsp; One of his greatest joys was playing with and reading to them as children and spending time with them as adults. He was the best dad!

The youngest of six, Daryl was preceded in death by his oldest two brothers, Carl and Jim. He was also preceded in death by a special nephew John. He is survived by his two brothers Doug and Wayne, his sister Pam, and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

For 25 years, Daryl worked at Kansas Association of School Boards as a printer and then most recently as a building manager. He took great pride in publishing the work sent to him. He enjoyed taking care of others and being the man behind the scenes. His colleagues would often describe him as kind, helpful and friendly.&nbsp;

When he wasn’t at work, Daryl filled his spare time with fishing, hunting and piddling in the garage. He also loved planting flowers and taking care of the little pond in his flowerbed. Daryl was quite the jokester and played pranks on others. He had the uncanny ability to remember all the jokes he told. In recent years, he cherished the time he spent with his wife at Grace Point Church.

Always a magnet for babies and animals, Daryl was a soft-hearted dog lover all his life.&nbsp; Throughout the years, he shared his heart with many dogs and a few pesky cats. His beloved canine companion, Izzy, passed in August.&nbsp; We imagine Heaven is a little louder with the sweet reunion of them all.&nbsp;

A memorial service for Daryl will be held on Tuesday, November 28, at 4 p.m. at Grace Point Church, 5400 SW Huntoon Street, Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp; Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, 712 9th Street, Baldwin City, Kansas, is in charge of the arrangements.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ayako "Betty" Jensen December 4, 1929 ~ November 16, 2023

Ayako “Betty” Jensen, 93, passed away Thursday, November 16, 2023, in Lincoln, KS. She was born December 4, 1929 in Nagoya, Japan to Kumajiro (Tachi) Takada and Shizu Takada. She had five siblings, Mitsuji, Masao, Fumio, Kazue, and Teruko. While working as a telephone operator in Nagoya, Betty met her husband John Jensen. They were married there on February 16, 1951. In 1951, they returned to Lincoln, John’s hometown. Betty spent the rest of her life in Lincoln cleaning the motel and homes in the community for a while. She was later offered a job as a grocery store clerk at the local IGA. Later in life, she helped her son, Jerry, at Jensen Oil service station.

Betty is survived by her son David Jensen of Lincoln; daughters, Rose Gourley of Lincoln and Susan Turpin (Randal Loder) of Scott City, KS; grandchildren, Troy Gourley (Kara), Toni Jensen (Merle Tippy), Scott Jensen, Tami Zimmerman (Matt), Sara Kuhl (Stephen), Todd Jensen (Kendra), and Brett Jensen (Sandra); and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John; and son Jerry Jensen.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, November 20, 2023, at Hall Chapel funeral home in Lincoln.

A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Hall Chapel with Pastor Kaye Metzler officiating.

Glenda Irene (Cooper) Spohn June 22, 1945 ~ November 15, 2023

Glenda “Jill” Irene Cooper Spohn, passed away on November 15, 2023, at the age of 78 in Abilene, Kansas.

She was born on June 22, 1945, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Glenn and Dorcas Evans Cooper. The oldest of four, Jill, was active in Campfire Girls and St. James Episcopal Church in Wichita, Kansas. She graduated from Southeast High in 1963 and continued her education at Emporia State University.

While attending ESU, Jill met Jerold Spohn and the two married on December 20, 1965. They had a strong marriage of 57 years and were a positive example of upholding marriage vows. One of their favorite things to do was to pick out anniversary cards for one another each year. After a few years of marriage, the couple settled in White City, Kansas, where they grew their family and raised 6 children - 3 boys and 3 girls. They moved to the house on Garfield Street in 1982 and lived there for the next 36 years.

Jill worked as the secretary of White City Schools for a number of years before staying home to raise her children. In 1992, Jill graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in secondary education in history. It was important to her to finish what she had started and demonstrate perseverance and sacrifice as she completed her degree. Her last place of employment before retirement was with Central National Bank in Junction City.

Jill’s children were her pride and joy, and she could always be counted on to be in attendance at any of their sporting events, 4-H activities, or church functions. In her free time, Jill enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and reading. She could be found nearly every Saturday at the local library. Jill regularly participated in an EHU group for women, served on various church committees, and was a very active member of local and county 4-H boards throughout the years the family resided in White City.

When grandchildren began to come along, Jill was delighted. She was known to send cards full of stickers to them and always had a new toy to play with when they would visit. Some of the most meaningful days to Jill were the days her entire family would gather together for a family reunion in the summer or at the holidays in December.

In 2019, Jerry and Jill moved to the Chapman/Abilene area. During these last few years, Jill’s family watched as Alzheimer’s invaded her mind, and she slowly lost her ability to remember all things. Though she grew incapable of remembering, those who love her the most will remember her for how supportive, devoted, and loving she was as a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Jill is survived by her loving husband, Jerold Spohn, and her children, Jerold Spohn Jr. (Reva), Bryon Spohn, Michael Spohn (Erin), Barbara Boggs (Matt), Jennifer Hickman (Daniel), and Susan Monnier (Mark). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Jill was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Dorcas Cooper, and her sister, Jeanne Hoffman.

A private graveside memorial service will be held at a later date. Following the service, a reception will be held at the White City Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Jerry Weber Volkman February 12, 1940 ~ November 18, 2023

Jerry’s life began on February 12, 1940, in Herington. He is the son of Wesley W. and Josephine (Koepke) Volkman. Jerry is a 1958 graduate of Herington High School. 

He served his country in the United States Air Force by enlisting in 1959 and, following basic training spent a year on station in Libya and a year in Turkey. 

When Jerry returned stateside, he was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. until his honorable discharge in October of 1963. 

Jerry was united in marriage to the former Sharon Kay Gunter on October 20, 1962, at the Woodbine United Methodist Church. He returned to railroading in 1963 in Wichita and in 1964, he and Sharon relocated to Woodbine to open a grocery store they operated for eight years. 

Jerry continued to railroad out of Herington until his retirement in 1993. He and Sharon also raised cattle for many years. Family and serving the community were at the center of Jerry’s life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking. Jerry extended those passions to others by teaching Kansas Hunter Safety courses in Woodbine, Herington, and Caldwell. 

He was a 4-H project leader and instructor for Women of the Outdoors. Jerry became a Woodbine City Council member in 1964, retaining that position for 57 years until his resignation in 2021. 

Jerry joined the Woodbine Lion’s Club in 1964 and received the International Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2021 for his long-time membership and service. He was a member of the Herington Hospital Foundation until December of 2021. Jerry was a member of the Liberty-Woodbine Fire Department, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees (NARVRE) and the American Legion. 

He also served on many committees and held offices at the Woodbine United Methodist Church. Jerry is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sharon Volkman of Woodbine; his faithful companion Rusty; sons Erich (Chantel) Volkman of Spring Hill, KS, Darrin (Robin) Volkman of Hope, KS, and Chad (Stacy) Volkman of Abilene; grandchildren Caleb Volkman, Marissa Volkman, Justin Volkman, Kyanna Volkman, Slade (Courtney) Volkman and Rylie (Tanner Sanders) Volkman.&nbsp; 

Jerry passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Darrel Volkman. His family will gather with friends on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, from 5-7 p.m. at the Woodbine United Methodist Church, where his funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. He will be laid to rest in Woodbine Cemetery with military honors. Dale Ray Johnson July 5, 1938 ~ November 16, 2023

Dale Ray Johnson was born on July 5, 1938, to Harold and Mildred (Osbun) Johnston. He spent his school years going to Marion Schools, graduating with the Class of 1957. During High School, Dale joined the Army National Guard. After graduating, Dale joined the Army. One of his highlights was serving in Alaska when it became a state. After discharge, he moved to Anthony, KS, where he met Betty Wiens. They were married on September 05, 1964, in Wichita.&nbsp; Their son Troy was born in Anthony in 1965.

The family moved to Caldwell in 1966 after purchasing a Standard Oil filling station. Their daughter Danette was born in Caldwell in 1968.&nbsp; After selling the filling station, Dale delivered fuel to farms for Standard Oil.&nbsp; He purchased KanOkla Auto Supply and ran it for several years before working as a machinist&nbsp;in Wellington. In 1994, Dale and Betty moved to his hometown of Marion, KS where he became sexton at the Marion Cemetery. Dale was a volunteer fireman for 25 years in Caldwell and 10 years in Marion. NASCAR races was his every weekend enjoyment. K-State sports was also a passion. In his retirement, going to events of the grandchildren was what he liked to do.

Dale leaves behind his wife, Betty; son, Troy, and wife Lynnea; daughter, Dannette, and husband, William Jackson; grandchildren Aaron (Brooke), Danica (Jake), Cory, Sierra, and Bryson; great-grandchildren Landon, Daxton, Tessa, Audra, Gracylynn, Rose and Araya.&nbsp; He leaves behind two sisters Wanda (Dewayne) Waring and Barbara Craney.

Dale passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro. Leona Ruth Blodgett December 12, 1935 ~ November 20, 2023

Leona Ruth Blodgett passed away on November 20, 2023, at her home in Detroit. She was born December 12, 1935, in Enterprise the daughter of Arthur and Grace (Picking) Peterson. Leona married Omer Lee “Hank” Blodgett on November 21, 1960.

Leona is survived by two sisters, Mary Bever of Florida, Teena Krause of Hutchinson, her sons James (Rhonda) Blodgett of Wichita, Ronald (Kandra) Blodgett of College Station, Texas, seven grandchildren Chad Anderson of Salina, Erica (Freddie) Hurt of Junction City, Nicky (Mike) Harder of Salina, Heather (Brian) Slater of Salina, Monica Harder of Auburn, Christine Blodgett of Detroit, Michael Blodgett of College Station, Texas, twenty grandchildren and fifteen great-great-grandchildren.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband Omer, sons David Blodgett, Michael Blodgett, sisters Beverly Krisher, Connie Amburgey, and her parents.

Leona graduated from Enterprise High School. After high school, she moved to Denver and worked as a model for a while. She moved back to Kansas and started a career in finance with the civil service. This job took her from Salina to Austin, Texas and back to Salina. After Schilling Sir Force Base shut down, she transferred to Fort Riley. She was the Chief of Military Pay, Finance Department, when she retired after 30-plus years. After retirement, she began to travel and helping Omer in the moving business which took them all over the United States.

They built a house in Detroit and resided there from 1970 until she passed.

Before Leona started to travel, her favorite pastime was bowling. She was on several leagues and enjoyed traveling to tournaments around the country.

Leona always enjoyed a house full of family and friends (the more the merrier), she believed in an open-door policy. She liked spending her time watching her family in their activities.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. Her final resting place will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery near Enterprise. Family and friends are welcome to the visitation on Friday evening from 5 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Shirley Yvonne (Elliott) Hoppock October 28, 1928 ~ November 13, 2023

Shirley Yvonne (Elliott) Hoppock&nbsp;passed away November 13, 2023, at Presbyterian Manor in&nbsp; Salina, Kansas. Shirley was born October 28, 1928, in Sterling, Kansas, the daughter of Mark and Elsie Elliott.

Preceding her in death was her husband of 64 years, Glenn Hoppock; her parents, Mark and Elsie Elliott; sisters, Erma Ringer, Bernese Taylor, Wilma Gossard, Evelyn Davis and brother, Everett Elliott.

Survivors include her two sons; Michael (Polly) Hoppock of Salina, Douglas (Nancy) Hoppock of Overland Park; five grandchildren, Erin (Preston) McCorkle of Salina, Amy (Taylor) Hamilton of Overland Park, Austin (Lisa) Hoppock of Salina, Grant Hoppock of Overland Park and Caroline Hoppock of Overland Park; and five great grandchildren, Beckett, Greeley and Maizie McCorkle and London and Calvin Hamilton.

She worked five years for Page Milk Co., in Coffeyville, Kansas before traveling with her husband while serving in the Navy. They were stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, Memphis, Tennessee, Brunswick, Georgia and Corpus Christi, Texas. Following Glenn's discharge from the Navy they moved to Wichita, Kansas where they raised their sons. She was a long-time member of the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Wichita, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was active in the women's group.

Shirley enjoyed her Red Hat groups, one in Wichita and one with her high school class of 1946, the Red Hatters of Altamont, Kansas. She was also active in Tops while living in Wichita. Without a doubt, Shirley's pride and joy were her two sons. She devoted her life to raising Mike and Doug into fine young men, and enjoyed watching them raise their own families. Shirley would count amongst her happiest times, the hours spent on the bleachers cheering on her boys, the meals she prepared for her family, and the moments when she shook her head at Mike and Doug's shenanigans.

A Memorial service will be held Friday November 24th 11:00 am at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, 5701 E. Mount Vernon St., Wichita, Kansas. Following the celebration of Shirley's life, a meal will be provided, as the family would like to meet and greet those who came to honor the life of Shirley.

The family would like to thank the staffs at Eaglecrest Senior Living and Presbyterian Manor of Salina for the love and care they have shown Shirley over the years.

LaVern Charles Robbins&nbsp;(84) passed away on November 20, 2023, at Republic County Hospital.

LaVern was born to Millard and Katharyn (Katie) Robbins on December 17, 1938 in Belleville. He served his country in the US Army during the cold war Berlin Crisis of 1958 and 59. He met the love of his life, Joyce Hedding at a harvest festival in Barnes, days before boarding a ship to Germany. They married after 5 dates when he was on leave months later.&nbsp;&nbsp;They enjoyed 60 years together before her passing in 2020.

LaVern was a loyal friend and dedicated employee. During his employment at West Plains Energy, he never missed a day of work in over 40 years.

LaVern was engaged in his community, serving two terms as a commissioner for Concordia from 1993-97 and serving as Mayor in 1993 and 1996. He stood with the families of deceased veterans as an Honor Guard at graveside services for many years.

LaVern was an outdoorsman and spent much of his spare time on the Republican River, Jamestown Lake and the Salt Creek watershed, hunting deer, pheasant, and bow fishing.

LaVern was a storyteller, turning many chance encounters into friendships during his lifetime.

LaVern was a Christian and a witness for Christ by the life he lived. He was a father to Kenneth (Ken) &amp; Carol, Lori &amp; Ron, David &amp; Mary, Michelle &amp; Thad; Grandfather to Larry, Paul, Lindsay, David, Larrissa, Travis, Clinton, Renee, Rachel, and Kiara. Great Grandfather to Airiona, Skyler, Lauren, Jenna, Duke, Jacob (Jake), and Bowie. Lavern was a father figure to many.

LaVern was preceded in death by his twin, LaVon May Svoboda of Lincoln Nebraska, sister Elda Roe of Belleville, Brother Dennis of Lenora and his parents.

LaVern’s family will host a visitation with friends at the Chaput-Bouy Funeral home in Concordia on Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 6-8 pm&nbsp;and a Graveside Service at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, south of Belleville on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at&nbsp;1pm.
