<h1>Sylvia (Winter) Helmer</h1>April 16, 1930&nbsp;~&nbsp;November 10, 2019&nbsp;(age 89) Sylvia's life began on April 16, 1930, on the family farm in rural Lincolnville.&nbsp;She was the daughter of Fred and Kathrina (Brunner) Winter and her stepmother Frieda (Budde) Winter.&nbsp; Sylvia is a 1947 graduate of Lincolnville High School, a graduating class of just eight students. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized as a youth.&nbsp; She was united in marriage to Jack Helmer on March 13, 1952 in Marion.&nbsp;Sylvia was a member of the Eastmoor United Methodist Church and worked with the ladies of the church on funeral dinners and other events.&nbsp; She was an excellent baker, known for her cherry pies and angel food cakes. Sylvia enjoyed painting the woodworking projects that Jack made.&nbsp;She was good at needlework and loved to travel.&nbsp; Sylvia was a member of the Neo-Century Club and the VFW Auxiliary for several years.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sylvia's greatest joy was her family which includes her children Shirley (Gordon) Groening of Marion and Kendall (Melinda) Helmer of Wichita; grandchildren Kristin (Matt) Brenzikofer,&nbsp;Jenny (Aaron) Acree, Leslie (Seth) Beytien, and Lauren (Tim) Hartland; great-grandchildren Brennen&nbsp;and Hanna Acree, Adalyn, Avery, and Nora Hartland and Vivian Beytien; her brother Alvin Winter of Marion and sister in law Wanda Winter of Salina and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Sylvia entered into her heavenly house while surrounded by family on November 10, 2019 at Marion Assisted Living. Funeral services for Ruby A. Carpenter, age 77, of Enterprise, will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2019 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene with Pastor Stan Norman officiating. Ms. Carpenter passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the Memorial Hospital in Abilene. She was born September 14, 1942 in Hope, Kansas the daughter of Ervin and Almeda (Base) Jantz. She attended grade school in Hope and Abilene. Ruby was a nurse aide and also worked construction driving a dump truck. She enjoyed puzzles and playing cards, but her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her daughter Kimberly Tanner of Solomon, sons Donnie Thompson of Harden, Kentucky, Russ Thompson of Cunningham, Kentucky, Kevin Thompson of Harden, Kentucky, Joel Thompson of Harden, Kentucky, Phillip Thompson of Solomon, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Lauralee Thompson, son Kenneth Thompson, brothers Ivan and Robert Jantz, sister Cindy Willis, and her parents. Cremation is planned. There will be no visitation. Joseph Bernard Ribordy, 98, formerly of Oakley, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019. He was born Aug. 1, 1921, in Grainfield, to George and Josephine (Nault) Ribordy. Joe married Rita Marie Racette, March 2, 1943 in Grinnell.Joe worked as a carpenter, painter, farmer and rancher, truck driver, and was employed by the local power plant and grocery store. Sandra Kay “Sandy” Larson, 80, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019. She was born in Galesburg, Ill., to LeRoy and Francis (Mitchel) Copeland.In her spare time, she loved doing ceramics and crafts. She enjoyed watching hummingbirds and was a member of Delphos Lions. Spending time with her family was always the most important thing to her.Survivors include: her spouse, Jack of the home; children, Cindy Bietz (Mark) of Delphos, and Timothy Larson of Effingham, Ill.; one grandchild; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.Cremation was chosen. Inurnment will be at a later date in Center Prairie Cemetery, in Knox County. Memorials may be made to the family.

Betty Blanche Koukol, the daughter of W. Newell Axtell and W. Jewell (Freeman) Axtell, was born February 15, 1926 at Grandma Freeman’s house northeast of Mankato, KS and passed away on November 11, 2019 at Republic County Hospital at the age of 93 years, 9 months, and 4 days.Betty grew up and attended schools in Mankato, KS graduating from Mankato High School in 1944.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She worked for McCarthy Hardware in Mankato, and later for the Jewell-Mitchell R.E.C.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She later was a seamstress for Scotts Specialties in Belleville.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Betty then was a cook for Belleville School District for over 20 years until her retirement.Betty was united in marriage to Virgil Van Wey on March 24, 1945 at Beloit, KS and children, Terry and Connie came to bless the home and he preceded her in death on July 25, 1953.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She was united in marriage to Burton Wilson on December 31, 1955 at Mankato, KS and children Jerry and Vonda came to bless the home and he preceded her in death on August 31, 1966.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On September 9, 1972, she was united in marriage to Joe Koukol at Belleville, KS and he preceded her in death on December 12, 2012.Betty was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Mankato, KS and was active in the Women’s Bowling League in Belleville for many years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Betty liked fishing and camping, bus trips with friends, crocheting and sewing for children and grandchildren, playing cards, and polka dancing.She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Virgil Van Wey, Burton Wilson, and Joe Koukol; and brothers, Forrest Freeman and Wallace Ward.Betty is survived by two sons, Terry (Charlotte) Van Wey of Harveyville, KS, Jerry (Marla) Wilson, of Cuba, KS; two daughters, Connie (John) Sullivan of Aurora, Colorado, and Vonda (Robert) Wakefield of Mankato, KS;&nbsp;one step son, Duane Koukol of Craig, Colorado;&nbsp;two step daughters, Helen Poppe of Olsburg, KS and Marilyn Koukol of Ruidoso, New Mexico;&nbsp;12 grandchildren:&nbsp;Lana, Sara, Lacey, Larrissa, Michell, Crista, Tandy, Lanessa, Zach, Seth, Curtis, and Allen;&nbsp;23 great grandchildren and sister-in-law, Marjorie Zadina of Beloit, KS, other relatives, and friends.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at the Bachelor-Surber Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Rod Rose, officiating.Interment will be at the Belleville Cemetery, Belleville, KS.Friends may call from 1 PM until 8 PM on Tuesday at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 5 PM until 7 PM.Memorials are suggested to the Golden Bell Haven or the VFW Auxiliary, Mankato.Online condolences at www.bachelor-surber.comBachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, KS is in charge of the arrangements.

Joe Sorell, age 50, formerly of Clyde, entered into rest on Sunday, November 10, 2019, at his current residence in Clifton, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born on August 30, 1969 in Concordia, Kansas to Jerry and Kathleen (Alexander) Sorell.Joe was a 1988 Clifton-Clyde Graduate.&nbsp;He attended Cloud County Community College, Concordia.He married Jennifer Nicholas, April of 1988 in Clyde, Kansas and they later divorced.&nbsp;To this marriage two children were born Autumn and Zach Sorell.Joe worked in the Maintenance Department at the Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp;Joe also mowed several lawns with his son Zach in the Clyde and Clifton Communities.&nbsp;Joe also did custodial work for the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Clyde.Joe and along with his brother Judd were prior owners of Last Call Bar and Grill in Clyde for several years.&nbsp;Joe and Dave Collins also owned and operated Rocker’s Music store in Concordia.&nbsp;Joe loved being outdoors, he was avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting, watching all sports and he was a KC Royals, and KC Chiefs fan, and loved attending his kid’s activities.&nbsp;He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Sons of American Legion Post #27 Clifton, VFW Aux. Juanita S. Demars, age 86, formerly of Concordia, KS, died Sunday, November 10, 2019 at the Alpine Village Retirement Center, Verdigre, NE.&nbsp;She was born on Feb. 20, 1933 in Concordia, KS to Hiram Jack &amp; Clara L. Juanita S. Demars

Sister Lucy Schneider died November 10, 2019 at Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia, KS.&nbsp;She was 92 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 70 years. She was born in rural Salina, KS, on January 15, 1927, to John and Lucy Seramur Schneider, the youngest of six children, and was baptized Agnes Adele. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS on September 8, 1948.&nbsp;On March 19, 1949, Agnes received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Lucy. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1950 and final vows on March 19, 1953.In 1948 Sister Lucy received a B.A. in English; from Marymount College, Salina. In 1956 she received a M.A. in English from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. She then received a Ph.D. in English from Notre Dame University in 1967. She taught in institutions staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Grand Island, NE; Concordia, Manhattan and Salina, KS. She also taught on the Indian Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. In 1991 Sister Lucy retired from teaching and served the community in various positions at the Motherhouse. Music played a vital role in Sister Lucy's life as she wrote many song parodies for special occasions.Sister Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, and one brother.&nbsp;One sister, Mary Elizabeth Ryan, survives. A Bible Vigil Service will be held November 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel of the Nazareth Motherhouse with Sister Betty Suther as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be November 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Rev. Bob Schneider and Rev. Barry Brinkman presiding.
