Herbert B. Griggs, 72, Culver, died Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at his home.&nbsp; Herb was born September 23, 1948 in Ottawa County to Harvey and Claudia (White) Griggs.

He was a 1966 graduate of Tescott High School and he served during the Vietnam era in the United States Army.&nbsp; He and Bonnie Beichle were united in marriage on October 12, 1973.&nbsp; He worked track maintenance for the railroad for 37 years.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors are his wife Bonnie; son Heath (Cara) Griggs; daughters Janette and Trisha Griggs; three grandchildren, Landyn, Navia, and Emma; sisters Connie (Nick) Conforti and Kim (Boyd) Volker; brothers-in-law, Larry (Sharon) Beichle and Jim Beichle; and sister-in-law, Mary Beichle.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 28 at Franklin Cemetery, Tescott.&nbsp; There will be no visitation.&nbsp;

Mason Alexander Taylor, infant son of 
Brandon and Kayla (Glines) Taylor was silently born on June 22, 2021 at 
Hays Medical Center, too precious for this world at 33 weeks, weighing 5
 pounds 3.3 ounces and 17.5 inches long.&nbsp;

He was greeted in heaven by his 
grandfather Jimmy Glines, and great-grandparents: Esther Colburn, Larry 
and Goldie Becker, Jerry Glines, and Roy&nbsp;Robbins.&nbsp;

He is mourned on earth by his parents 
and big sister Charlotte Taylor of Hays, KS,&nbsp;grandparents:&nbsp;Victoria and 
Joseph Kathman of Juniata, NE and Mike and Denise Taylor of Canton, KS, 
great-grandparents: Evelyn and Chester Taylor of Salina, KS, Lawrence 
Colburn of Kearney NE, and Linda Glines of Grand Island, NE,&nbsp;aunts&nbsp;and 
uncles: Danelle Glines (Chris Weigel) of Hays, KS, Holly (Alex) Leiker 
of Hays, KS, Heather Pettie of Fargo, ND, and Monica (Seth) Diederich of

Though he was called home before he

face of Jesus, and the first thing he felt was the loving touch of those
 we ourselves,&nbsp;long to hug. Our little angel will&nbsp;never&nbsp;be forgotten.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on
 Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with 
Pastor Ron Wedel officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 
10:00 am until 10:30 at the funeral home.&nbsp; A luncheon will follow after

Victor Lenn Hann, son of Lenn Irvin Hann and Mary Ann (McKenzie) Hann was born October 12, 1945 at El Dorado, Kansas and passed away on June 21, 2021 at Republic County Hospital, Belleville, Kansas at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 9 days.

Victor served with the United States Navy. He was united in marriage to Shirley Kay Mohr on April 29, 1972 and to this union two children, Kristi and Jeremy were born.

He was a member of the American Lutheran Church and the Osage Nation.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lenn and Mary Ann Hann, wife Shirley K. Hann, and brother Earl E. Rhodes Jr.,

He is survived by his daughter Kristi (Greg) Hansen of Olathe, KS;&nbsp; son Jeremy (Megan) Hann of Sabetha, KS; four grandchildren, Gavin Hansen, Kaden Hansen, Finley Hann, Lily Hann; two sisters, Michelle Martin of Wichita, KS, Sue Ann Clay of Fall River, KS; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2021, Belleville Cemetery, Belleville, KS, conducted by Mark Brown.

(Swanson) Miller.&nbsp; Alfred was a graduate of Herington High School and served his country in the United States Army.&nbsp; He was a valued employee for over 38 years at Custom Metal Fabricators (CMF) in Herington as a welder.&nbsp; Alfred never had a sick day in all the years he worked at CMF and was considered part of the “family” at the shop.&nbsp;

 He was a metal hobbyist, creating works of art in metal including the alligator in front of the CMF plant and the metal spider.&nbsp; 

Alfred is survived by his children Jennifer, Justin and Phillip Miller, all of Herington; grandchild Jodi Marie Miller, and siblings George (Shirley), Donna, Dean and Valere.&nbsp; 

Alfred passed away at his home on Saturday June 19, 2021.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his parents, and son Clint Miller in 2008.&nbsp; 

His family will gather with friends on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at the Wilsey Cemetery where his memorial graveside service will be held with military honors.

Cora “Alice” Hogan, 92, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2021. She was born September 13, 1928, in Amity, Mo., to Jesse Thomas and Myrtle Ivy (Pulley) White. She married Weldon C. Hogan on August 29, 1948.

Alice was an elementary school teacher in Salina for 32 years, primarily at Grace E. Stewart. She was a member of First Christian Church and enjoyed volunteering at the Salina Community Theatre and Smoky Hill Museum. Alice was an avid golfer, quilter, gardener, and was well known for her gooseberry pies.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Weldon; grandson, Samuel Wiley; four brothers; and five sisters.

Survivors include her daughters Gerry Logan (Peter), San Jose, California, and Brenda Barnard (Bill), Kalaheo, Hawaii; grandchildren Jay Wiley and Daphne Barnard; and brother Daniel White.

A memorial service will be announced later. Private family burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

Stephen Ray Faubion, 82, of Salina, walked into heaven on June 21, 2021, after a brief, yet multifaceted battle with cancer. Polio as a child, and post-polio later on, couldn’t slow him down from living a full and loving life with his sweetheart of over 61 years, Genene Kay (Barnard) Faubion, of the home.&nbsp; Steve’s greatest joy was making sure that the people he loved knew how much he truly loved them.

Steve, born on October 8, 1938, in Hutchinson, KS, was the only child of Forrest Clyde Hugh and Muriel Caroline (Curtis) Faubion. He attended nearly every school in Hutchinson, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1956. Steve attended Hutchison Community College before majoring in engineering at Kansas State University in Manhattan, where he and Genene started their family soon after marrying in Hutchinson on December 27, 1959.

Although he began working on the family farm, tinkering on cars, managing gas stations, and building homes at an early age, his professional career was as a systems design engineer, beginning at CertainTeed in McPherson, KS, then working until retirement at Premier Pneumatics, Inc. in Salina, KS. Truth be told, he knew more than a little something about most anything, had done just about everything, and could figure out a way to solve nearly every problem. 

There was little that was not of interest to Steve. He enjoyed fishing, sailing, camping, photography, woodworking, racing, John Wayne movies, jazz music and played a mean sax to the delight of all who heard him. He developed a true sense of mischief in his early years, honing it over time. His sense of humor never faltered, so per his request, following cremation, his ashes will reside in a Chock Full O’Nuts coffee can inside the glass hutch in the living room.

Steve led and mentored dozens of Boy Scouts through a myriad of adventures and is a Master Mason of the Salina Blue Lodge #60. He was generous with his experience, wisdom, laughter and love through multiple charities and organizations, including as an active member of Belmont Boulevard Christian Church.

Steve (Papa) is survived by his wife Genene; son Jere Michael (Mike) Faubion (Charlotte Bowles), Abilene, KS; daughter Pamela Beth Hargrove (Tom), Shawnee, KS; grandchildren Caroline Marie (Faubion) Van Hyning (Richard), Olathe, KS; Madison Beth (Hargrove) Dahl (Erik), Lenexa, KS; Jaxon Thomas Hargrove (Mignon), Nashville, TN; Alyssa Beth Hargrove, Gunnison, CO; and great-grandchildren Adam Thomas Dahl, Arabella Joyce Van Hyning, Lillia Kay Dahl, and Axel Raynes Van Hyning, in addition to numerous other extended family and adopted family members around the globe. All of the above know without doubt, how much they were loved by Papa, and will live the rest of their lives passing on his joy.

A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 2021, at Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, officiated by Rev. Tara Thompson.

Polio as a child, and post-polio later on, couldn’t slow him down from living a full and loving life with his sweetheart of over 61 years, Genene Kay (Barnard) Faubion, of the home.&nbsp; Steve’s greatest joy was making sure that the people he loved knew how much he truly loved them.Steve, born on October 8, 1938, in Hutchinson, KS, was the only child of Forrest Clyde Hugh and Muriel Caroline (Curtis) Faubion. He attended nearly every school in Hutchinson, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1956. Steve attended Hutchison Community College before majoring in engineering at Kansas State University in Manhattan, where he and Genene started their family soon after marrying in Hutchinson on December 27, 1959.Although he began working on the family farm, tinkering on cars, managing gas stations, and building homes at an early age, his professional career was as a systems design engineer, beginning at CertainTeed in McPherson, KS, then working until retirement at Premier Pneumatics, Inc. in Salina, KS. Truth be told, he knew more than a little something about most anything, had done just about everything, and could figure out a way to solve nearly every problem. There was little that was not of interest to Steve. He enjoyed fishing, sailing, camping, photography, woodworking, racing, John Wayne movies, jazz music and played a mean sax to the delight of all who heard him. He developed a true sense of mischief in his early years, honing it over time. His sense of humor never faltered, so per his request, following cremation, his ashes will reside in a Chock Full O’Nuts coffee can inside the glass hutch in the living room.Steve led and mentored dozens of Boy Scouts through a myriad of adventures and is a Master Mason of the Salina Blue Lodge #60. Lewis Marcell Stephen of Hays, Kansas was born on January 3, 1950, in 
Stockton, Kansas to Lewis Harold Stephen and Glennys Faye (Reed) 
Stephen. They lived on the family farm along Bow Creek in Rooks County. 
He had seven other siblings: Lawrence, Loretta, Lorene, Lucille, LeRoy, 
Lana and Leonard. 
 Lewis attended schools in Stockton, Hoxie, and Colby. He graduated 
from Stockton High School with the class of 1969. Shortly after, he 
married Rhonda Irish of Nebraska in 1970. To this union were born two 
sons: Jeremy and Stacey. They later divorced. He enlisted in the United 
States Army and served his country for a faithful seven years before 
being honorably discharged in October of 1978. In the Army he worked as 
Military Police and was stationed in Germany, Fort Meade Maryland, and 
Fort Riley in Kansas. Following his discharge, he worked in Hays at 
Waffle Crete, then Contact America and Answer Net for many years as a 
supervisor. He retired as a supervisor but stayed busy by doing 
landscaping and lawn maintenance for his neighbors and friends, which he
 loved to do. 
 Lewis was a hardworking, busy body. If he wasn’t tending to a 
friend, neighbor, or family’s lawn, he was hitting garage sales to find 
treasures he could fix up to re-sell for a few extra bucks - and did 
quite well in doing so! He cared deeply for his family and his three 
furry, fat and happy cats. He will be remembered for his witty 
personality, patriotism, and work ethic.
 It has been said, “The happiest of people don’t have the best of 
everything, they just make the best of everything they have,” and 
Lewis’s life was a testament to this.” He was a kind and loving man who 
lived to serve his family, friends, and neighbors. He tended to the 
hearts and souls of all knew him and made a life that will continue to 
grow for eternity.

Dee Richard Holecek, 91, of Russell, KS, and formerly of Ellsworth, KS, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Homestead Assisted Living in Russell.

Richard was born January 19, 1930 in Ellsworth, the son of Joe, Jr. and Bertha Eunice (Mead) Holecek. He grew up in Ellsworth and graduated from Ellsworth High School.

&nbsp;Richard was united in marriage to Mildred Virginia Judy on August 19, 1950 in Ellsworth. This union was blessed with five children: Debbie, Douglas, Darin, Dawn and Dan. They made their home in Ellsworth, Holyrood, Lucas and Russell.

Richard was the owner and operator of D’s Inc. He worked in sanitation and was a heavy equipment operator. He helped maintain the county roads in Fairview Township for many years. Earlier in life he was the manager of the Home Lumber yard in Holyrood and Greensburg. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Russell. He enjoyed gardening, wood working, hunting and fishing, attending coffee at the Pines in Ellsworth and driving trucks.

Richard’s surviving family includes his wife of 70 years, Virginia of the home; daughters Debbie Kaupp (Lynn) of Barboursville, WV and Dawn Spiker (Bill) of Suffolk, VA; sons Doug Holecek (Roxanne) of St. Marys, KS and Darin Holecek (Cindy) of Ellsworth; daughter-in-law Marsha Bouker of Hays, KS; brother Harold Holecek of Greensboro, NC; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and son Dan Holecek.

Larry Lawrence Heald, age 78, entered into rest on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at his residence in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born October 12, 1942, in Herron, Illinois, to Lawrence and Gladys (Shroyer) Heald.

Larry grew up in Miltonvale, Kansas and graduated from Miltonvale High School.&nbsp; He lived his adult life in Concordia.

Larry married Glenna (Ryser) Heald at the Baptist Church in Concordia on August 6, 1961.&nbsp; There were four children from this union.

Larry farmed with his father and his career was an over the road truck driver for Scrivner/Boogaarts until his retirement.

Larry was well known around Concordia as owner of Larry’s Toys.&nbsp; Larry enjoyed going to estate sales and would travel outside of Concordia to search for his treasurers (or “junk” as Glenna said).&nbsp; Larry especially enjoyed setting up a booth at the annual Walnut, Iowa Antique Show, held on Father’s Day weekend for 12 years.&nbsp; Larry attended Walnut with all of his children in the days before his death.

Larry always took the time to help someone in need, regardless if it was a family member, a friend or a stranger.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2021 from 1-8 p.m. at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, with the family receiving friends from 6-7 p.m.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 25, 2021 at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, Kansas with Pastor Dwight Whitead officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Miltonvale Cemetery.

Mark Jerome Benson, of Salina, Kansas passed away Friday, June 11, 2021.

Mark was born June 21, 1962, in Slayton, Minnesota. 

Mark was a jack of all trades, working at Kraft Manor for over 10 years in addition to independent contracting. When not working, Mark acted as a mentor for at-risk youth and enjoyed spending time at The Arena with longtime friends and gaming connoisseurs. He was the kind of person that would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need and always had a joke or kind word to spare. He had a bright smile and infectious laugh that made chatting with him a joy to all those he met. He loved to spoil his nieces and nephews and treated them as if they were his own. Family was a huge part of his life, as he spent much of his free time visiting with his siblings and their children. He loved video games, football, and his collection of bandannas which he was almost never seen without. Those who knew Mark will remember him for his heart of gold, strong commitment to those he loved and his love of life.

Survivors include his sisters Linda (Jay) Woodfield of Salina, Kansas; Christina (Dan) Starcher of Waldorf, Maryland, and his brother Allan Benson of Wichita, Kansas; two nieces Kylie and Megan Woodfield and three nephews James Benson, Nick Woodfield, and Ryan Starcher.

Mark was preceded in death by his grandparents Joseph and Verna Ewen, Gladys and Osacar Benson, his mother Sharon Flynn and stepmother Cynthia Benson.

Memorial services will be at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th St, Saturday, June 26, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. with a luncheon to follow.&nbsp;

James was a dedicated and dependable employee all of his life.

He was preceded in death by his mother Janet Bowersox; and two brothers, Jeff Bowersox and David Bowersox.

James is survived by two sisters, Vicky Griggs of Garden City, KS and&nbsp;Lisa (John) Stinson of Wichita, KS; his father Lynn Bowersox of Belleville, KS;&nbsp;nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; other relatives, and friends.

Jerome "Jerry" Francis Gasper, 82, of McPherson passed away on June 18, 2021 at his home. He was born on May 29, 1939 to Herman N. and Anna M. (Reinert) Gasper in Tipton, Kansas. He was the oldest of two children born to this union, the older brother of LaVerne. He attended Tipton Catholic School in Tipton, Kansas and graduated from St. Boniface High School, Tipton, Kansas in 1957. Jerry was united in marriage to Doralie Sue Holling on February 4, 1961 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Tipton, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of three children, James, Pamela and Susanne. Doralie passed away on January 2, 1995. During the early years of marriage, Jerry worked at Kent Manufacturing in Tipton, Kansas. While working on a crew building bridges in McPherson, Kansas area, he felt this would be a good town to settle and raise their young family. Upon arriving in McPherson, he worked in construction building houses for Harris Development.

While working there he met many lifelong friends. 

This is where he developed his construction skills. This love of carpentry and working with his hands was evident when he constructed his own family's home and his son's home. His carpentry skills can be found in numerous projects in the McPherson area. He never met a project that was too tough to tackle. He could envision and create a project easily in his mind from start to finish. 

In 1974, Jerry began working at Johns-Manville in the Maintenance department. He retired as the maintenance superintendent in 2001. Jerry was united in marriage to Anna Ruth Knobloch on May 5, 1999 in McPherson, Kansas. Anna died on July 10, 2002. Jerry was a lifelong devoted Catholic, a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, co-worker and dear friend. Jerry enjoyed having coffee with his buddies in the mornings and afternoons. He was a member of the American Legion.

He loved everything KU. He enjoyed attending KU basketball games with his family. For many years, Jerry took his KU buddies to the Williams Fund Roundball Luncheon. At holidays, he always displayed his impression of Jayhawk basketball players dunking in the front driveway. To further show his athletic abilities, he was also known to occasionally hurdle over a church pew. In slow-pitch softball days, he was known as "Brooks Robinson" for his errorless plays at shortstop. He was known as "Coach Jerry" to many kids who played baseball and softball for him. He enjoyed any opportunity to watch his children and grandchildren participate in sports. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Anna Gasper and his brother LaVerne. He is survived by his children James and wife Tomi of McPherson, Kansas; Pam Tallant and husband Doug of Pretty Prairie, Kansas; Sue Boston and husband Mike of Newton, Kansas; special friend Pat Bledsoe of McPherson, Kansas; his eight grandchildren, Amber Slater(Blake), Crystal Reinecker(Jeff), Breanna Tallant, Trey Tallant(Ashley), Meghan Boston, Erin Boston, Sean Boston and Katelyn Boston; and his four great-grandchildren, Warren and Gavin Slater, Reagan Reinecker and Mikey Boston. Kenneth D. (Jack-Doc) Blackwood passed away at the age 93 on June 19, 2021, in Clay Center, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on October 2, 1927, to Jenny and George Blackwood in Cloud County, KS.&nbsp; Kenneth grew up on the family farm and was a graduate of Miltonvale High School Class of 1944.&nbsp; 

Kenneth served in the United States Navy for two years and attended Palmer Chiropractic College.&nbsp; &nbsp;He married Marvel A. Morisette on June 24, 1950, in Annawan, Illinois. &nbsp;Kenneth was a chiropractor in Manhattan, KS from 1950 until his retirement in 1985.&nbsp; Following retirement, Kenneth and Marvel made their home in Clay Center.&nbsp; 

Marvel preceded him in death on October 21, 1998, after 47 years of marriage.&nbsp; He was a member of the Clay Center United Methodist Church, American Legion and BPOE.&nbsp; 

Kenneth had many hobbies including farming, wood carving, yard work, golfing, hunting, fishing and gardening.&nbsp; He was also preceded in death by his son Greg; three brothers, his parents, and grandparents.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 23 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clay Center

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 23 at the United Methodist Church in Clay Center.

Cremation will follow the service and private family inurnment will be held at a later date in the Miltonvale Cemetery.

Linda Marie Ashburn, age 79, of Alta Vista, passed away June 19, 2021 at the Morris County Hospital. She was born March 11, 1942 in Woodbine, Kansas, the daughter of Emmanuel and Ruby (Rohloff) Koepsel.

Linda graduated from Wilsey High School and married Lauren Ashburn on March 30, 1962 in Council Grove.&nbsp; They had three daughters: Sheila, Connie and Lori. Linda volunteered several years for the Community Thrift Store. She belonged to the Chalk Ladies Aid and worked on the election board for Rock Creek Township as well as being a homemaker and assisting Lauren with the farm. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, gardening, canning and freezing her vegetables, attending dances with Lauren, and flying with him in his plane. She loved spending time with her family. Linda will be sadly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her mother and father–in-law, Edgar and Doris Ashburn. Linda is survived by her husband Lauren Ashburn of the home; daughters Sheila Hill and husband Kevin of Alta Vista, Connie Waters and husband David of Council Grove, and Lori McDiffett and husband Mickey of Alta Vista; granddaughters Valerie (Justin) Wasmuth of Marion, Ashley (Eric) Brown of Emporia, Taylor McDiffett of Emporia; grandson Matthew (Jesa) Waters of Manhattan; great-grandsons Gavin, Liran and Magnuson Wasmuth, Porter Brown and Fisher in September; brother LaVern (Bea) Koepsel; and nieces and nephews.

A graveside service for Linda will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 23, at Sunny Slope Cemetery. Linda will lie in state Tuesday, June 21 from 3:00 t0 4:00 p.m. at Sawyer Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Community Thrift Store, 17 S. 5th St., Council Grove, KS 66846.

Bud Smithson’s life began on September 30, 1949, in Junction City, the son of Wayne Garvin and Marvella (Burns) Smithson. He grew up on his family farm near Delavan, Kansas, and graduated from Wilsey High School in 1967. On February 20, 1970, Bud was united in marriage to Roxie Bruckner of Delavan. 

In 1967, Bud began his career as a professional truck driver working for the Missouri-Pacific Truck Lines in Kansas City, Missouri. He returned to the family farm and continued his career with Woolworths, Churchill Truck Lines, and Yellow Freight Lines. In 2005, Bud retired with the Teamsters local 696 after a combined 38 years of service. 

Bud was a life-long farmer, the job he enjoyed the most. He served his community as the treasurer of the Grandview Township No. 7 and as a volunteer firefighter on the Delavan Fire Department. He was a proud NRA member, retired Teamsters Local 696 member, and supported the Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation. Bud was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time at the lake camping and boating. Later in life, Bud and Roxie enjoyed traveling the country. 

Bud’s greatest joy was his family, including his wife Roxie Smithson of the home; their children Dan (Kathy) Smithson of Kearney, MO, and Casey (April) Smithson of Wamego; grandchildren Tyler (Mercedes) Anders, Bailey Smithson, Jenna Smithson, and Dalton Smithson; great-granddaughter Zoey Anders; his sister Sandra McKinnon of Ferndale, MI; brother-in-law Dean Gutsch of Burdick; sister-in-law Donna Smithson of Huntington Beach, CA and many nieces and nephews. 

Bud, age 71, passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2021, at Salina Regional Hospital.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Shirley Gutsch and Wayne “Butch” Smithson, and brother-in-law Bob McKinnon. 

Bud’s family will gather with friends at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 26 at the Delavan Community Center for his memorial service, led by Pastor Clarence Sumner. Bud will be laid to rest in the Delavan Cemetery following the service.
