Lawrence Whatley, 84, of Junction City, KS, died on Monday, August 9, 2021 at Valley View Senior Life Center. Cremation will take place. A graveside service with military honors will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Lawrence was born June 26, 1937, in Cleveland, OH the son of Luther and Bertha (Fisher) Whatley. Lawrence served in the United States Army. After his retirement from the Army, he owned and operated Red Carpet Cleaning for many years in Junction City. He was a Mason. Herbert Laverne Johnson, 85, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 3:53 a.m., Friday, August 6, 2021 while in the company of family members at the Cedars Health Care Center.&nbsp;Herb wrote, “Remember, if you are a Christian, death is just another journey and I love to travel.”

Herbert Laverne Johnson was born July 11, 1936 in Princeville, Illinois the first of two sons of Harold Elgin Johnson and Lorene Francis Kramer Johnson. After leaving the farm near Princeville, Illinois, his family moved to Canton, Illinois, Illiopolis, Illinois, Richmond, California, Beatrice, Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska, South English, Iowa, McPherson, Kansas, Garden City, Kansas, Adel, Iowa, York Center, Illinois, Wyers Cave, Virginia, Mt. Morris, Illinois, Thayer, Nebraska, Elk Horn, Iowa, McPherson, Kansas, Moscow, Kansas, Liberal, Kansas, and Blue Eye, Missouri. His high school years were spent at Beatrice, Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska, Kinross High School near South English, Iowa, McPherson, Kansas and he graduated from Adel, Iowa. In 1954 he entered McPherson College as an industrial arts major but after taking several courses with Dr. Raymond Flory, history/government became his major and his first professional love with industrial arts a close second. While at McPherson College he met Helen Joan Ford and they were married on August 25, 1957. They had three children - Helen Rachel, Harold Lane and Hope Elizabeth. After graduating in 1958, Herb’s first job teaching was at Thayer High School in Thayer, Nebraska where he organized an industrial arts department. After two years at Thayer he went to Elk Horn High School in Elk Horn, Iowa where he organized a district-wide library/media program and a high school industrial arts program. In 1970 Herb earned his master's degree at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and was called to McPherson College to organize an educational media program for the college in Miller Library. While at the college he also started an audio visual communications department/program. In 1988 he went to Moscow High School in Moscow, Kansas where he was instrumental in the organization of a district library/media and computer program. Herb loved education and small schools. He also loved to organize new programs for those students. Some of those programs were “before their time” but they always seemed to be well received by his students. In 1998 he was granted early retirement by the Moscow school district. Then he and Joan moved to Blue Eye, Missouri near Branson. Herb had many interests including hunting, fishing, collecting, travel in the United States, and architectural design. He was a student of several Native American tribes including the Mississippian Mound Builders, the American Civil War, the Trans-Mississippi West and World War II. His many interests led one of the superintendents that he served under to refer to him as “my shortstop." Herb often said “I’ve done everything except teach home economics and girls physical education.” After Joan’s passing in 1999 he spent much time fishing, reading and the pursuit of family history and genealogy. In 2010 he returned to McPherson. He was preceded in death by his parents,Harold and Lorene Johnson and his wife Joan Johnson. He is survived by his children H. Fred Vague was a hero to his sons.&nbsp; His life was simple but complex.&nbsp; Life was difficult but he made the most of every opportunity.&nbsp; From his birth in Castleton, Kansas, to his death in Wichita he did not physically stray from his roots.&nbsp; However, that did not stop his active mind from going to far places and exploring complex things with his mind.&nbsp; This was a result of the cruel act of blindness.&nbsp;

Fred Robert Vague was born on July 31, 1925, to Frederick and Viola Mae (Dague) Vague.&nbsp; He died on August 1, 2021 at the age of 96. He was a loving husband to Cristel Erlee (Higgins) Vague and the father of Rex Robert Vague and Ron Alan Vague.&nbsp; He had two siblings, Helen Ann McClellan and Melvin Vague.&nbsp;

“Fred R” or “Zeke” as many called him, had a long and fruitful life.&nbsp; He grew up in the town of Hutchinson, Kansas, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1943. &nbsp;He joined the Navy on September 15, 1943 during World War II.&nbsp; He advanced to the rank of Motor Machinist Mate 2c. And was honorably discharged from the Navy on May 19, 1946.&nbsp; He attended Hutchinson Junior College from 1946 to 1948.

He married Cristel Erlee Higgins on July 30, 1948.&nbsp; He attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas and after graduation, with a law degree, in 1951 moved to Wichita, Kansas to live.&nbsp;

Fred was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa and subsequently progressed to total blindness.&nbsp;

He worked for the Travelers Insurance Company in Wichita for 25 years as a claims attorney, and was the supervising adjustor of the claims department.&nbsp;

Fred will be remembered as an active man whom nothing seemed to bother much.&nbsp; Considering his condition and the hardships it placed on him, that outlook on life was exceptional.&nbsp; His active mind and inquisitiveness about all things served him well throughout the years.&nbsp; He bowled on the blind bowlers league in Wichita for many years. He was a ham radio operator, woodworker and loved all things mechanical.&nbsp; He was the builder, mechanic and pit crew for his sons' 10-year go-kart racing hobby.&nbsp; He had a love and passion for automobiles and books, and although finances were tight, managed to obtain several cars that are considered classic by today’s standards, as well as an extensive library. He read every day, first reading braille, then listening to talking books furnished by the Kansas State Library, and went through a prodigious number of them over the years.&nbsp; He was an avid Shocker fan, and enjoyed listening to WSU games whenever he could.&nbsp; He also enjoyed attending the drum and bugle corps competitions when they came to the Wichita area.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He and Erlee resided in the north Wichita area in the house of their dreams for 43 years.&nbsp;

Fred was an amazing man who accomplished many things even with his visual disability. Family and friends remember Fred as being sweet, tenderhearted and smart.&nbsp; He leaves a legacy of love and integrity.&nbsp; He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife. 

Survivors include his sons Rex (Georgianna Dirga) Vaguen and Ron (Brenda) Vague; grandchildren Briana Vague, Alex (Tam) Vague, Alana Vague, Aaron (Jessica Allen) Vague; and great-grandchildren Destiny and Luna.

Peterson, 94, died August 9, 2021 in Manhattan, KS.&nbsp; He was born on June 12, 1927 in Clay County, the son of George and Hanna (Swenson) Peterson.&nbsp; Delmar was raised in Clay County.&nbsp; He attended Johnson and Swedesburg country school and Morganville and Clay Center High Schools.&nbsp; 

He married Lorene Small on November 27, 1947.&nbsp; They made their home and farmed in Clay County.&nbsp; Delmar also worked at Northern Natural Gas and was on the Clay Center Co-op board.&nbsp; 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Lois Gelino and brother Virgil.

George E. Mikesell, age 77, of Jamestown, KS, died Sunday, August 8, 2021 at the Cloud County Health Center, Concordia, KS.&nbsp; He was born on May 10, 1944 in Belleville, KS to Charles E. &amp; Mary Hope (Irwin) Mikesell.

George graduated from Belleville High School and attended Kansas Wesleyan University for two years while playing football and graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in business and a minor in education.&nbsp; George owned and operated Concordia Automotive for 30 plus years and farmed in the local area.&nbsp; 

He married Brenda Stortz and to this union were born Robert, William and Mary.

He is survived by his sons Bob Mikesell (Kathy), Jamestown and Bill Mikesell (Katie), Aurora; daughter Mary Tippie (John), Nevada, MO; brothers Merrel Mikesell, Lincoln, NE and John Mikesell, Sula, MT; &nbsp;grandchildren Ashlee &amp; Hannah Haist, Blake, Tristan, Andrew and Liam Mikesell, and Jase and Mason Tippie; great-grandchild Karrington Haist; and sisters-in-law, Sharon Mikesell, Payette, ID, Wilma Mikesell, Courtland and Evelyn Mikesell, Boise, ID.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Nancy Mikesell and brothers Charles, Wayne, Kenneth and Quentin.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2021 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Belleville City Cemetery, Belleville, KS.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2021 with family greeting friends from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.&nbsp; 

The family suggests memorials be made to the family to be designated at a later date in care of the funeral home.&nbsp;

James Phillip Fells passed away August 8, 2021 at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. 

He was born November 14, 1937 in Manchester, Kansas the son of Clifford James and Anna Elizabeth (Strauss) Fells. James graduated from Woodbine High School in 1955. Later he attended Wichita State University. On November 9, 1957 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Irene Minick. 

Over the years James had many jobs that included working for Firestone, Edgington Music, Montgomery Wards and KJCK. He also started several businesses including Fairview TV, F&amp;S TV and Radio Shack, Magnavox and Zenith Franchises in Junction City. He was a member of the Woodbine Methodist Church, Lions Club, Woodbine City Council, Union Township Board, volunteer fireman, Herington Senior Center board member and chairman, and UMYF leader. He was also active on many church committees over the years and led bible study at Herington Senior Center. 

James is survived by his loving wife Phyllis of the home; son Michael (Patricia) Fells of Mulvane and daughters Cynda Fells of Woodbine, Brenda Fransen of Grand Junction, Colorado; granddaughters Jennifer (Kristopher) Miller of Topeka; Michele (Austin) Ellington of El Dorado; Christy Fells of Wichita; Kelly Fells of Mulvane; seven great-grandchildren: Maya, Ammi, K’Draya, Michael, Houston, Kassidy, and Kristopher;&nbsp; and brother Eugene Fells of Herington. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Stanley Fells and&nbsp; great-grandson, Aiden. 

The family has chosen cremation. No services are planned at this time.

Devin Lee Kurtz&nbsp;passed away unexpectedly in Salina on August 5, 2021. Devin was born September 7, 1961, to Bob Kurtz and Rea (Taylor) Kurtz. His childhood was spent in Chapman, KS and Burlingame, KS. He graduated from Chapman High School in 1979 and attended Kansas Wesleyan University.

In 1981, Devin began work unloading tires for the Western Auto (now Advance Auto Parts) Distribution Center in Salina and he ended his over 40-year career with the same company as general manager. He was relocated for work to Temple, TX, and Remington, IN, but Kansas was always his home. On July 16, 1983, Devin married his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Jolene Feigley. He was the proud father of three.

Devin was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and papa. He was a man of faith and always made sure his family was provided for. His sense of humor (duly inherited by his children) filled the family home with laughter. He was a talented man who loved to sing and play the guitar, and a gifted athlete and sports fan. Devin had a passion for cars (especially Camaros) and shared his love of music and sports with his children and grandchildren. He was a woodworking craftsman and a skilled mechanic. Whether he was restoring a 1948 John Deere tractor or building custom furniture for his family, Devin could make or fix anything; he was a Renaissance man and the embodiment of the "do-it-yourself" attitude.

Devin was a quiet and thoughtful man with a quick wit and a kind heart. He made a positive impact on the lives of many people, and his influence extends beyond our nation's borders. 

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jolene; children Brad (Paula) Kurtz, Dallas; Jared Kurtz, Salina; Jill (Trent) Langvardt, Chapman; grandchildren Logan and Jason Kurtz, Brynlee Langvardt. He is also survived by his mother Rea Tedder, sister Gigi (Mike) Dudeck, and brother Jeff (Mona) Kurtz, as well as numerous nephews, cousins, aunts, an uncle, and countless friends.

Visitation for friends will be 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, August 17 at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. The family will not be present.

A celebration of Devin's life will be held at a later date. 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship will be established in Devin's name. Donations can be made to this fund or to the University Christian Church, c/o Ryan Mortuary.

Mary Ellen Higby, 70, of Salina, Kan., passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021. She was born on May 9, 1951 in Salina to Harold and Felicia (Sander) Reid.

Mary Ellen graduated from Salina High School. After high school, traveling abroad, and staying in Denver, she eventually came back to Salina where she met her husband. Mary Ellen and Clinton were married at Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1976.

Mary Ellen is survived by her devoted husband Clinton Higby; daughter Jennifer Frank; sister Sylvia; and brothers Tom and Jim. She is preceded in death by her parents; her brother Anthony; nephew Randy; and nieces Kathryn and Lisa.

Mary Ellen loved to tell stories and would keep others laughing with her boisterous enthusiasm. She enjoyed dining out and socializing with friends and family. She always had gifts to give, be it her favorite waitstaff, salon, or someone she just met.

Services will be Monday, August 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Timothy Clay Null, age 65, of Salina, KS, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, August 6, 2021. Tim was born on April 12, 1956 in WaKeeney, KS and is the son of Lewis “Jack” Null, Peggy Null (Hildebrand), Benjamin Koralek, and Lillian Koralek (Choitz). A 1972 graduate of Ellsworth High School, Tim went on to proudly serve in the United States Marine Corps. Tim was a lineman for KP&amp;L before retiring as a distribution systems operator for Westar Energy.

Tim married the love of his life, Carla J. Null (Kohls), on August 21, 1976 in Ellsworth, KS. Tim and Carla had two children, Erin and Andrew.

To know Tim, was to love him. Tim’s eyes sparkled with every smile and he had an infectious laugh that easily made the day better. Tim enjoyed woodworking, sewing, tinkering, being his grandkids' biggest cheerleader, joking, finishing up that “one last thing” (project he was working on), cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and loving his family. Tim never knew a stranger and told everyone who would listen about his grandkids, who are his pride and joy. Tim devoted his life to his wife, children, and grandchildren, whom he adored and cherished. Tim stood firm in his faith and lived his life for Jesus.

Tim is survived by his wife Carla of the home; his daughter Erin (Pinson) and son-in-law Chad of Lyons, KS; his son Andrew and daughter-in-law Miriam of Colorado Springs, CO; and his grandchildren: Willow, Blake, Dharma, Mallory, and Eloise. He is also survived by his brother Pat Null (Teresa); sister Lonnie Soukup (Donald); brother Chant Koralek; brother Dave Koralek (Marge); brother-in-law Scott Kohls (Barb); sister-in-law/nephew Angela and Joshua Kohls; many nieces, nephews, friends, and co-workers who were very special to him.

Tim was preceded in death by his fathe, Jack Null; his dad and mom, Ben and Lil Koralek; his mother-in-law Lois Kohls; his brother-in-law Craig Kohls; his brother Mike Null; and his sister-in-law Gladys Koralek.

Sandra “Sandy” L. Gullickson, age 75, passed away August 6, 2021 in Salina, KS. Mrs. Gullickson was born on December 1, 1945 in Marshall, MN., to Ted and Katie (Williams) Versluys. She was united in marriage to Gary D. Gullickson on June 17, 1967, in Fond du Lac, WI.

She was an avid reader and cherished time spent with her 11 grandchildren. She enjoyed the traditional Christmas trip with her sisters and sisters-in-law and traveling to Ft. Worth, TX to spend time with her daughter and family.

She is survived by her loving daughters Katie (Mike) Junk of Salina, KS, and Keri (Mario) Flores of Ft. Worth, TX; 11 grandchildren, Hannah, Kyler, Elyse, Tessa and Eli Junk, Isabel, Alex, Sophia and Grace Flores, Leif and Lars Gullickson; three sisters, Beth Breault, Mary (Steve) Snyder and Karen (David) Roesner, all of Salina, KS; and four brothers, Keith (Kathy) Versluys of Fond du Lac, WI, Jim (Gaylene) Versluys of Salina, Ks, John (Jill) Versluys of Olathe, KS, Ted (Christine) Versluys of Topeka, KS;&nbsp; and many nieces and nephews.

Charlene was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Mary Queen of the Universe Church, Salina, KS. She will always be remembered for her unending love of family.

Madeleine was a homemaker until she went back to work at the Elks Lodge as a cook for 18 years.&nbsp; She was a member of the Clay Center Wesleyan Church and enjoyed crocheting, making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and being with friends and family.

She was also preceded in death by her daughters, Linda Largen and Edith Brown, granddaughter, Amber Largen, her parents, one sister and one brother.

She was united in marriage to Paul William Hegle on June 16, 1951, in Freemont, Neb. 

Dian worked as a store clerk most of her working career. She was a window dresser and store clerk for JC Penney and Dreiling’s Store. Dian enjoyed flower gardening, baking for her family, loved to fish, loved to take walks and socializing with her friends. 

Her greatest joy was her family including her children Cindy (Gary) Floyd of Herington, Kimberly (Scott) Erickson of Salina, and Tracy (Robert) Gilbert of Groveland, FL; grandchildren GP (Amber) Floyd, Danny Floyd, Nicholyn Strome, Clansey (Emily) Strome, Sarah (Aaron) Wendt, Madeleine Gilbert and Mason Gilbert; great-grandchildren Amanda, Tana, Brantley, Wesley, Matthew and Liam, Cleveland, Ivy, Barrett; and great-great-grandchild Sadie. 

Dian passed away on August 5, 2021, at Herington Hospital. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul, and siblings Jimmy, Johnny, Woodie, and Kenney DeBus, Lee Rose Valentine, Ella Mae Taylor and Betty Nely.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Wayne passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at the age of 69 years old. Gerald’s life began on February 25, 1953, in Herington. He was the son of Charles and Alice Mae (Diepenbrock) Dittman. He was a 1971 graduate of Hope High School. Gerald was united in marriage to Diana Evans on December 7, 1974, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek. 

At the time of his death, Gerald was a school bus driver for Hope schools. Gerald enjoyed riding his motorcycle and making wine and home brewing beer. He was a great cook and computer hobbyist, as well as doing some woodworking. Gerald was a member of the American Legion Post 12 and at the time of his death was the current commander.

His loving family includes his wife Diana of Hope, children Erin (Keith) Day of Krum, TX and Megan (Greg) McPherson of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren Tobin and Caitlin Day; siblings Sharon (CJ) Cross of Salina, Duane (Brenda) Dittman of Lincolnville, Janice (John) Fenske of Valley Center and Charlotte (Jim) Schultz of Hope and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald passed away on August 2, 2021, in Garden City, MO. 

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Carolyn Dittman. 

His family will gather with friends on Sunday, August 8 from 2-4 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Herington. His memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 9, 2021, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek.

Daniel better known as “Butch” or “Papa” Bergstrom, celebrated his heavenly birthday on Thursday, August 5, 2021.&nbsp; Butch was born on July 25, 1946 in Wichita, Kansas to Leonard “Shorty” and Lucille (Ehly) Bergstrom.

He was a 1964 graduate of Clyde High School.&nbsp; Dan also attended Ft. Hays State University.

On April 26, 1974 he married Carla Brown in Chicago, Illinois.&nbsp; To this union two children were born, A.J. and Garet.

Dan worked as a surveyor for Universal Associates, Clyde CO-OP Gas Station, and was a manager of the V.F.W., was a truck driver for many years, He also worked for Cloud County as an appraiser.
