Mark William Childs, 63, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 6 a.m., Wednesday, November 10, suddenly, at his home. Mark, son of Robert Dallas and Alice Irene (Hackler) Childs, was born July 7, 1958 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was the youngest of five children born to this union -&nbsp; four sons and one daughter, David, Patricia, Galen, Craig, and Mark. Mark attended Fairfield Grade School and graduated from Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Kansas in 1976. He was a member of Church of Christ, Sylvia, Kansas. Mark William Childs was united in marriage to Charlene Sue Zerger on February 3, 1990 at Kingman, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Hutchinson, Kansas. This twelve-year union was blessed with the birth of three children, two daughters and a son -&nbsp; Chelsea, Claire, and Connor. Mark was a third generation milk hauler and owner and operator of Childs Liquid Transports of Central Kansas. He then started with EATON of Hutchinson, Kansas where he was a CNC machinist before finishing his career at Pfizer in McPherson, Kansas. Mark enjoyed 4-H as a young man, telling funny stories, and watching movies. He liked mowing lawns while he was growing up and had developed quite the business. Mark loved being with his children and was particularly close with his daughter, Claire. Hearing stories about and seeing pictures of his grandpets also brought him joy. He is survived by his children, Chelsea Childs, wife of William Sibley II of Norman, Oklahoma, Claire Childs of Kansas, and Connor Childs of Wichita, Kansas; his mother Alice Childs of Plevna, Kansas; his siblings, David Childs of San Diego, California, Galen Childs and wife Cindy of Abbyville, Kansas, Craig Childs and wife Carla, of Abbyville, Kansas, and Patricia Schmidtberger and husband Neal, of Hutchinson, Kansas; his grandpets; other relatives and a host of friends. Cyril J.Ulmen “Cy”, 87, of Assaria, passed away Nov. 12, 2021 at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, KS. Cy was born January 18, 1934 in Mankato, MN to Martin Joseph and Lucille (Prom) Ulmen. 

He had two brothers, Martin John Ulmen,Jr. and Norbert Ulmen, five sisters, Patricia (Ulmen) Juenamann, Mary Ann (Ulmen) Bently, Iona (Ulmen) Widmer, Theresa (Ulmen)Widmer and Barbara (Ulmen) Gehke. 

Cy graduated from Loyola High School in Mankato, MN in 1952.

His first 20 years were spent on the family farm. When Cy left the farm he was drafted into the Air Force, serving for 20 years, stationed in five foreign countries and eight states as a teletype installer, serviceman and supervisor. 

Cy married Babara Smith on April 21, 1956. They had three children, Thayer, Timothy and Lucinda. After 20 years of military service, he went to work for the Kipp School and Assaria High School. 

He then worked/retired for Great Plains Manufacturing for 20 years in Salina, KS, then 10 years for the Renaissance Café in Assaria, KS.

He loved singing with the Bethany Messiah Chorus for 25 years. A special memory was singing at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the Messiah Chorus. Along with many other singing groups, he was part of was Assaria Lutheran Church Choir, The Silver Tones Chorus, which traveled to many nursing homes.

Cy loved gardening and for many years had a good-sized garden, which in later years included flowers. His love for gardening resulted in him becoming a “Master Gardener.” Cy was also an active member of the Assaria Lions Club as well as the McPherson Gem &amp; Mineral Club.

At the Assaria Lutheran Church, Cy was social ministry chairman for many years. He enjoyed recruiting music groups, vocal and instrumental, for service and song each year to support many worthy causes. 

Friendship was important to Cy. He was a friend to many at Bethany Home along with the Salina, Assaria and Lindsborg communities. He was a stranger to none. 

He is survived by: his daughter Lucinda (Sheldon) Nelson, grandson Wes; son Timothy Ulmen, grandson T.J. (Teegan) Ulmen, great-grandson Quincy, granddaughter Emily (Jacob) Enz; granddaughter Ryan Ulmen, great-grandson Tristen Bacon; brother Norbert Ulmen and sisters Theresa Widmer and Patricia Juenmann. 

Cy was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara, son Thayer Ulmen, daughter-in-law Kara Ulmen , brother Martin J. Ulmen Jr., and sisters Mary Ann Bentley, Iona Widmer and Barbar Gehrke.

Cy thanks everyone who shared with him through the good times and encouraged him through the more difficult times.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021 at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg, KS. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2021 at Assaria Lutheran Church, Assaria, KS.

Veronica Marihugh, 87, of Esbon, passed away November 11 in Mankato.

Survivors include her husband Edgar, son Kenneth and his wife Nancy of Esbon, daughter Linda Edwards and husband Stacey of Lee's Summit, Missouri.

Veronica Marihugh was born on May 28, 1934, in Bekescaba, Hungary, the daughter of Josef and Theresia (Brandt) Geisel. As a young girl, Veronica and her family were forced to flee from their home by the Russian military, and the family immigrated to the United States, settling in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Veronica attended school in Ponca City, graduating from high school in 1954.

She was united in marriage to Edgar C. Marihugh at the Christian Church in Ponca City on January 15, 1955. To this union of over 66 years, three children were born, Linda Kay, James Allen and Kenneth Lee.

Veronica was active in her community, and was very involved with and a proud member of the Church of Christ of Esbon and Beloit. She was also a member of the Esbon Lion’s Club and the Odessa EHU.

Veronica passed away on November 11, 2021, at the Jewell County Hospital, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 14 days.

She is preceded in death by her parents, son James in 1976, and brother Adam Geisel.

Veronica will be forever remembered by her husband Edgar of Esbon, son Kenneth and his wife Nancy of Esbon, daughter Linda Edwards and her husband Stacey of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jason Edwards and his wife Emily, Lindsay Manning and her husband Montgomery, Leslie Cosgriff and her husband Casey, Hannah Simpson and her husband Ryan, Jason Lambert and his wife Jessica, Andrea South and her husband Mark, Aaron Suelter, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a community of friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, November 18th, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.

Graveside services will be Friday, November 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the Odessa Cemetery, rural Esbon.&nbsp;The cemetery is located at 155 "K" Road, rural Esbon, or five miles south of U.S. 36 on Highway 181, then 3 1/2 miles east on 210 Road, which turns into K Road.

Memorials are requested to the Beloit Church of Christ or Esbon Community Church, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Floyd was born in on his parents' homestead, rural Moundridge, Kansas on November 19, 1931, a son of Anna (Stucky) and Fred Flickinger. Floyd attended Farm School, rural Moundridge and graduated from Moundridge High School, Moundridge, Kansas in 1950. Floyd Flickinger was united in marriage to Edith Neufeld on November 1, 1957 at Eden Mennonite Church, rural Moundridge, Kansas. It was a double wedding with Edith's younger sister Leona and Leland R. Goering. The young couple established their first home together in Newton, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of two sons, Randy and Darrin. Through the years they lived in Hesston, Newton, and rural Moundridge before moving to McPherson in 1965. Floyd and the family were deeply saddened by the death of Edith on January 23, 2015. He was a member of Eden Mennonite Church, Moundridge, Kansas. Through the years Floyd worked on his parents' farm, worked as a fabricator and foreman for the Hesston Corporation, owned and operated the McPherson Dairy Queen along with his wife Edith, worked pipe extrusion for Certain-Teed Corporation, was a bagger and cleaner for John's Manville, was a driver for the AMPI Dairy, was a custom cutter covering the midwest from Texas to Canada, worked as a driver for MCDS, and worked for Neighbor's Café. Floyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, dirt track racing, watching wrestling, basketball and all sports, and following his children and grandchildren in their sports and activities. He is survived by his sons Randy Flickinger and wife Sandi of Canton, Kansas and Darrin Flickinger and wife Sherri of rural Alden, Kansas; his siblings Leland Flickinger of Moundridge, Kansas, Laverne Flickinger and his wife Luene of Moundridge, Kansas, Evelyn Schrag and her husband Norvin of Moundridge, Kansas, and Marvin Flickinger and wife Rita of Newton, Kansas; his three grandchildren, Tiffany Rohr and husband Scott, Aaron Flickinger and wife Sarah, and Amanda Graham and husband Wade; his seven great-grandchildren, Kinsley Rohr, Wesley Rohr, Wayland Flickinger, Ellie Flickinger, Leland Flickinger, Casynn Graham, and Roanin Graham; many nieces and nephews other relatives and a host of friends. Through the years Floyd worked on his parents' farm, worked as a fabricator and foreman for the Hesston Corporation, owned and operated the McPherson Dairy Queen along with his wife Edith, worked pipe extrusion for Certain-Teed Corporation, was a bagger and cleaner for John's Manville, was a driver for the AMPI Dairy, was a custom cutter covering the midwest from Texas to Canada, worked as a driver for MCDS, and worked for Neighbor's Café. Floyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, dirt track racing, watching wrestling, basketball and all sports, and following his children and grandchildren in their sports and activities. He is survived by his sons Randy Flickinger and wife Sandi of Canton, Kansas and Darrin Flickinger and wife Sherri of rural Alden, Kansas; his siblings Leland Flickinger of Moundridge, Kansas, Laverne Flickinger and his wife Luene of Moundridge, Kansas, Evelyn Schrag and her husband Norvin of Moundridge, Kansas, and Marvin Flickinger and wife Rita of Newton, Kansas; his three grandchildren, Tiffany Rohr and husband Scott, Aaron Flickinger and wife Sarah, and Amanda Graham and husband Wade; his seven great-grandchildren, Kinsley Rohr, Wesley Rohr, Wayland Flickinger, Ellie Flickinger, Leland Flickinger, Casynn Graham, and Roanin Graham; many nieces and nephews other relatives and a host of friends. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents Anna and Fred Flickinger; his wife Edith Flickinger. Mary was born in Hillsboro, Illinois on October 22, 1927, a daughter of Jessie Pearl (McClaine) and Raleigh Walter Scott. Mary attended Hillsboro Illinois grade schools and graduated from Morrisonville High School, Morrisonville, Illinois. She then attended and graduated from Carthage College, Carthage, Illinois with her bachelor's degree in English. She was a member of Lindsborg Covenant Church. Mary was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. Mary enjoyed sewing, taking care of her grandkids and spending time with her friends and family. Mary donated blood regularly and received her 10-gallon pin before stopping in July 2018. Later on in her and John lives, they enjoyed traveling in their RV around the U.S. Mary Virginia Scott was united in marriage to John Cawthorn Heidbreder on September 10, 1950 at Hillsboro, Illinois. The young couple established their first home together in Minneapolis, MN. This union was blessed with the birth of four children - three daughters and one son&nbsp; Florence, John, Margaret, and Katherine. She is survived by her children Florence Peterson and her husband Robert of Lindsborg, Kansas, John Heidbreder, of Lindsborg, Kansas, Maggie Hall and her husband Brad of Pagosa Springs, Colorado and Kathy Logan and her husband Matthew of Wichita, Kansas; her sisters Betty Niesmann of Pontiac, Illinois and Ellen Spencer and her husband Wayne of Taylorville, Illinois. Anthony John Lamia, Sr. “Meatball”, 66, passed away Friday, November 12, 2021, in Madill, Oklahoma. He was born February 8, 1955, in Ellsworth, Kansas to Jasper and Mary Ann (Simanella) Lamia. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anthony was raised in Kanopolis, graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1973 and then attended vo-tech in Salina. While attending vo-tech he worked at his father’s Conoco station in Holyrood. Once he graduated, he ran the Conoco station for several years, then worked at Northern Natural for a few years before purchasing Holyrood Motor Company in 1982, making his own mechanic business along with his brother-in-law, Roger Langston. Eventually becoming sole owner of the business, he was well-known for his mechanical knowledge and the respect he gave to each customer.

Anthony’s life was full of love and laughter. He enjoyed sarcasm and jokes. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, drag racing, camping, riding motorcycles and four-wheelers, trap shooting, old cars and trucks, building and re-building motors, his dogs, the annual fish fry and spending time with his friends and family. Anthony loved the beauty of the world and all of God’s creations, especially his grandchildren.

Anthony married Diane (Lawrence) October 7, 2009. He is survived by his wife Diane; son Anthony John Lamia, Jr. (Christa) of Ellsworth; daughter Bobbie Jo Rogers (Chad) of Holyrood; son Brock Lawrence (Bryn) of Holyrood; grandchildren Callun, Huxtyn, Zeke, Gentry and Harlow Rogers; Jasper and Colt Lamia; and Crew Lawrence. Anthony is also survived by sister-in-law Vickie Lamia of North Little Rock, Arkansas; sister-in-law Cindy Lamia of Salina; brother-in -law Richard Lawrence (Pam) of Salina; aunt Anita Selvaggio, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Anthony was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Leonard Lamia and Jim Lamia.

Visitation: 1-8 p.m., Friday, November 19, 2021, with family present 6-8 p.m. at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Sarah’s life began on December 22, 1981, the daughter of Martin and Jeannie (Hochevar) Colling in Wellington, Kansas. 

She attended Caldwell High School, was a devoted stay-at-home mother, and had recently begun to put her creativity and ingenuity to work as an independent contractor or handywoman. She was a member of the Potwin First United Methodist Church and Remington Booster Club. She enjoyed working on school projects with her kids, coaching and attending their sports activities, doing craft projects, sketching, working on her home and yard, remodeling her mother’s rental house, and helping her friends and neighbors. She had a deep dedication for her church family as she was the director of children’s ministries and worked enthusiastically with the youth group. She taught children’s church, children’s Sunday school, was the lay leader, and helped lead Sunday morning worship.

 Sarah was all about having fun and brightening the world wherever she was. She had a beautiful, mischievous personality and was the first to lighten the room with her sense of humor.

Her loving family includes her parents Martin and Jeannie Colling of Peck, Kansas; her children Christian, Lucas, Anna and Mary Shockley; siblings Dan Huynh (Thao) of Newport Beach, California, Rebekah Alexander (Loren) of Wellington, Michael Colling of Peck, David Colling of Wichita; boyfriend Tony Haag of Newton; nieces and nephews Henry, Brandon (Abi), Kyle, Kyra, Keira and Kami Huynh, Victoria Washington, Andrew Alexander, and David Colling, Jr.; uncles Bradley Colling (Marsha), Bruce Colling and Brian Colling (Loan); aunts Laura Hochevar, and Chris Cave; lots of cousins and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents George and Rebecca (Combow) Colling and maternal grandparents Anthony and Betty (Saunders) Hochevar; uncles William Louis Colling and Michael Anthony Hochevar, and infant nephew Scott Michael Washington

 Sarah passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at the age of 39 years old.

Her celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, November 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Potwin First United Methodist Church.

She attended Caldwell High School, was a devoted stay-at-home mother, and had recently begun to put her creativity and ingenuity to work as an independent contractor or handywoman. She was a member of the Potwin First United Methodist Church and Remington Booster Club. She enjoyed working on school projects with her kids, coaching and attending their sports activities, doing craft projects, sketching, working on her home and yard, remodeling her mother’s rental house, and helping her friends and neighbors. She had a deep dedication for her church family as she was the director of children’s ministries and worked enthusiastically with the youth group. She taught children’s church, children’s Sunday school, was the lay leader, and helped lead Sunday morning worship. Sarah was all about having fun and brightening the world wherever she was. Derrick was born September 1, 1975 in Boston, Massachusetts to Marchelle Daniels. Derrick was adopted at the age of two and raised by his single foster parent, Bertha Hudson.

In Boston, Derrick attended and graduated from elementary school at the James James Chittick School, middle school at the William Barton Rogers School and high school at English High School. In 1997, Derrick graduated from Northlands Job Corps in Vergennes, Vermont with a degree in general business. Derrick continued his studies at Champlain College.

Derrick had a passion for writing, drawing and sports. Derrick authored the first of a series of fantasy novels entitled Desiree: The Half Elf Princess Warrior published in 2018. Derrick enjoyed supporting his favorite sport teams the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots. Derrick was always kind and caring to everyone. Derrick had the biggest and most kind heart.

Derrick is survived by and will be deeply missed by his daughter, Juliana Marchelle Johnson-Hudson, his adopted and biological family, as well as many friends.

Cremation has taken place, and a&nbsp;private service for the family will be held in Massachusetts at a later date.

Monte Ray Albert, 64, of Cawker City, Kansas passed away suddenly on November 11, 2021. Monte was born August 24, 1957 to Billie and Florence Albert and grew up on the family farm south of Glen Elder. Monte attended Glen Elder Grade School and then Waconda East High School in Cawker City.

 He met the love of his life, Jolene, as a freshman when the Cawker City and Glen Elder High Schools consolidated. After graduating in 1975, he attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, majoring in art and playing football for one year before moving back to farm with his dad.

Monte married Jolene Muths on May 31, 1981 and they made their home north of Cawker City on Little Oak Creek. Two adored daughters, Kelsey and Kari, were born to this union.

 Farming was his life and he enjoyed working the land and raising cattle. He frequently took the girls along with him and many memories were made through the years. He instilled a sense of adventure and love of the outdoors in them and his six grandchildren.

Monte was charismatic and full of love for his family and many friends. He didn’t know a stranger and would strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. He loved telling stories, especially sharing a good ghost story with his grandkids around a campfire. Monte was an avid reader and had a passion for archeology and history. He spent countless hours in the great outdoors exploring, hunting, fishing, and searching for artifacts and fossils. Even if he came home empty-handed, he would say the day was a success because it was spent in the fresh air and sunshine. Family vacations to Colorado were the highlight of every year and time spent in the mountains camping, hiking, fishing and relaxing was well-earned after harvest was finished.

Papa Mo, as he was called by his grandchildren, was continuously in awe of the family he and Jo had created. He was happiest when everyone could come home to be together and he would sit smiling at the crazy, loud chaos that ensued. He was so excited to have grandsons and loved to take them fishing, out on the boat, to the pond to catch frogs, and with him to care for his cattle. His devotion and creativity shined as he created elaborate scavenger hunts, designed a hay bale maze for the kids to run on and played chess and checkers with them. He doted on his only granddaughter and she inherited his zest for storytelling. He never missed an opportunity to tell those he loved how much they meant to him.

Monte is survived by his wife Jolene, of the home, Cawker City, Kansas; daughter Kelsey Adams and husband Tim of Beloit, Kansas; daughter Kari Mellies and husband Brant of Ness City, Kansas; brother Rodney Albert (Ann) of Glen Elder, Kansas; sister Vicki Albert-Hayden (Larry) of Beloit, Kansas; sister Sandee Albert of Lebanon, Kansas; brother-in-law Don Muths (Shari) of Clay Center, Kansas; sister-in-law Kaylene Hill of Spring Hill, Florida; and grandchildren Kemper, Reed and Elle Adams and Colter, Conner and Creighton Mellies. He was preceded in death by his parents Billie and Florence Albert.

Monte’s smile and positive energy impacted so many; like the light of a shooting star filling a room, so fast, so far, and gone too soon. Each person is given the gift of time on this earth to live and love and Monte’s legacy will continue to shine brightly in those that knew him.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 15 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home in Beloit followed by burial in Glenwood Cemetery in Glen Elder. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. with family present from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. 

Memorials may be given to the Mitchell County Historical Society or American Heart Association.

Don Harder was born on November 7, 1937 in Newton, Kansas to B.G. and Elise (Wiebe) Harder. He graduated from Whitewater High Class of 1955 and attended Bethel College. 

He was a cattle and grain farmer. In his youth, he was a starting flagger for the Sports Car Club of America, receiving the 35-year Longevity Award in 2003. In later years, Don dedicated himself to showmanship in the American Quarter Horse Association, achieving the pinnacle of Grand Champion halter horse. He also was a member of the board of the Bank of Whitewater. Don enjoyed traveling frequently around the U.S .and to Mexico, Canada and Asia.

His loving family includes his son Joe Harder of Shawnee; his daughter Evelyn Harder, and grandson Alexander, both of Easton; his brother Willis Harder of North Newton; and his sister Lois Nattier (Sidney) of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elna Dick of Buhler.&nbsp;

Don passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Wheat State Manor in Whitewater. His family will gather with friends on Friday, November 19 from 12-1:30 p.m. with his funeral service to follow at 1:30 p.m. at Lamb Funeral Home, 120 S. Main, Whitewater. James’ life began on July 19, 1938, in Oswego, Kansas. He is the son of Floyd and Anna (Hale) Lacey. He attended Kansas Wesleyan University and was a part of the college football team. James was united in marriage to Roberta (Dains) Hale on January 18, 1969, in Topeka, Kansas. James worked as a brakeman for the Rock Island Union Pacific railroad. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life.

James passed away on August 26, 2021, in Herington, Kansas. He is preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Lacey. Inurnment for James and Roberta will take place 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 15, 2021, at the Oswego Cemetery, Oswego, Kansas. 

Memorials in James and Roberta’s honor may be made to the charity of your choice.

Arlisa A. Robertson, born November 12, 1958 in Lincoln, Kansas to Keith and Ardis Jensen (formerly Deiter), passed away unexpectedly on November 10, 2021. It was her wish to be cremated. Lisa is survived by her daughter Heather Reust (Thomas) and her two beautiful granddaughters, Cora and Genevieve Reust all of St. George, Kansas; mother Ardis Jensen; brother Ron Jensen (Shelly) of Salina; sister Marilyn Schneider (John) of Hunter, Kansas; nephews Brandon Schneider (Serrina) of Beloit, Kansas and Aaron Jensen of White Wright, Texas; niece Marissa Long (Justin) and great-nephew Nixon Long, all of Bennington, Kansas. She is also survived by many other relatives, friends and her beloved dog. She is preceded in death by her father Keith, formerly of Lincoln, Kansas. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1976. She attended Salina Vo-Tech and graduated with a degree in offset printing. She spent a short time in Texas and returned to Salina and worked at Crestwood and Advanced Auto Parts, until she retired due to health issues. She was very artistic and loved to crochet, embroider, draw, and woodwork. She loved to read, and be outside, primarily at Lake Wilson or driving through the country. She adored her two little granddaughters. They were the light of her life. She was a strong believer in God and attended the Emmanuel Foursquare Church. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who truly knew her. A private family service will be held. Shirley M. Reese, age 94, went home to be with the Lord on November 8, 2021. She was born at home in Roxbury, KS on March 9, 1927, to Harry and Geraldine Nirider. She spent her youth in the Roxbury area, graduating from Roxbury High School. In 1946, she married her high school sweetheart, Clyde Reese, who preceded her in death in October 1994. They made their home in Roxbury until 1974 when they moved to McPherson until Shirley later moved to Abilene to be with her daughter. She was a kind and friendly woman, loving mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her daughter Leatta Lynn Webb and husband Bob of Abilene, KS; two grandsons, Mike Webb and wife, Robin, of Fort Scott, KS and Brent Webb and his wife, Angie, of Lawrence, KS; great-grandkids Michaela, Caden, Cole, Logan, and Lexi; one brother, Edwin Nirider of Montana; and numerous nieces and nephews. David worked in the claims department for the Travelers Insurance Company and later taught business english at the University of Shanghai before retiring. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. David spent most of his time at the Abilene Public Library. He was an avid reader and movie watcher. He probably checked out every single movie the library had available, but the love of his life was his 1938 Plymouth car. He is survived by his daughter Bethany “Beth” Baucom and her husband Andy of Corsicana, Texas, a brother, and ten grandchildren.

Adair was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral. She had been a Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and a proud volunteer at the Smoky Hill Museum. She touched many lives with her love and friendship.

Adair is survived by her daughter Paula Singleton (Rick); son Thad Rhodes; brothers Russel Haden (Sandy) and Robert Haden (Diane); four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco “Paco” Martinez, and her parents.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 20, at 10 a.m. at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, with burial to follow in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Salina.

Harold Reed Dowell, of rural Cuba, KS, son of Howard and Nora Dowell, was born on Oct 6, 1933 at Concordia, KS and passed away on November 8, 2021 at the Republic County Hospital at the age of 88.&nbsp;

He graduated from Agenda Rural High School in 1951. He was a farmer and stockman his whole life. He married Joyce Y. Bergstrom on December 12, 1954 and to this union three children were born, Donald, Sharon and Pamela.

Harold was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church of Cuba, Cuba Lions Club, Cuba Booster Club, Cuba Senior Citizens, and was a board member of Rolling Hills Electric for almost 20 years.&nbsp;

Harold and Joyce were awarded the Kansas Non-irrigated Corn Yield Award in the year of 1999, sponsored by Pioneer Seed and the National Corn Growers Association. They enjoyed a trip to Orlando, FL. Also, they received the Republic County Soil Conservation Award for the year of 2002.

Harold can be remembered by many things including his special love for his cattle, and crops, watching his children and grandchildren’s sports and other activities, sports on TV and the many hours spent preparing the baseball field in Cuba for his own children and those of the community. Family time was always cherished with tractor rides, hunting, fishing, spoiling the dogs and cats, open fire pit wiener roasts, feeding the wildlife and, of course, the abundance of sweet corn he grew each year.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife Joyce of over 66 years; son Donald (Jeanne) Dowell of Olsburg, KS, daughters Sharon Ginn of Reynolds, NE and Pamela Dowell of Belleville, KS, sisters Darlene (Dean) Danielson of Belleville, KS, and Irene (Dale) Hess of Salina, KS, sister-in-law Ledona Dowell, Narka, KS. Also survived by four grandchildren Kelli&nbsp;(Steven) Patterson of Fort Collins, CO, Nick Dowell of Horton, KS, Cheryl (Scott) Campau of Omaha, NE and Kimberly (Chase) Kesl of Hoyt, KS, along with his 10 great-grandchildren – Kamryn, Gabriel, Ellie, Nora, Easton, Lucy, Josephine, Brooks, Faye and Elainie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Darrell and son-in-law Jerry Ginn.&nbsp;

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m.,&nbsp;Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the Cuba Presbyterian Church in Cuba KS, with Pastor Phil Goombi and Kathleen Marsicek officiating.&nbsp; &nbsp;Interment will be&nbsp;held at the Kopsa Cemetery, rural Cuba, KS.&nbsp;

Hillsboro - Alma Schlehuber, 86, passed away November 10, 2021 in Wichita. She was born December 6, 1934 to Samuel and Leah (Winter) Laubhan in Hillsboro. She married Allen Schlehuber January 18, 1952 in Durham. 

Survivors include: husband Allen Schlehuber of rural Hillsboro; son Merle (Marolyn) Schlehuber, rural Hillsboro; granddaughter Maci (Taylor) Ellison of Wichita; sister Lorraine Shumaker of Shreveport, Louisiana; sister-in-law Julie Schlehuber Werdann. 

Funeral service 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro officiated by Pastor John Werner. Graveside service 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Mom whole heartedly believed in the old adage, “if you’re not early, you’re late.” This especially applied to her dinner table. If you were not in place at 11:30 you better have had a very good excuse. Mom fed and watered us all every day. Dinner, lunch in the fields and sometimes supper late at night. Many times, Dad would be doing business with someone in the yard when lunch time came around. Rather than being late he would invite them in as everyone was always welcome at her table. I cannot remember a time not getting enough to eat or one single bad meal. Mom was a magician with a cast iron skillet. Mom kept her house immaculate. She was taught early on that there were many reasons to be poor but no good reason to not take care of what you did have. This was an exceptional chore with all of us traipsing through her house. In addition to providing for us during work days she also would have an open spread for all of our hunting buddies. Sometimes during pheasant season, she would prepare food for as many as twenty people. She loved it, so did we, so did they. When I got old enough to start helping out more Mom went from an equipment operator to taxi driver. She would haul us around from field to field as we moved machinery. Mom has also always taken care of the book work tasks. Just like with her philosophy on being late, if she didn’t have the bill paid the next day after receiving it, she felt that it was already overdue. Mom was a prolific letter writer. She always had stationary by her chair with letters started to her sister Lorraine, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Mom was the keeper of both sides of the family. She kept track of new births, birthdays, graduations and all other special events and happenings and reported to us. She would most likely know every one of your names if she were here today with us, which she is in spirit, but she cannot whisper names to us today to get us out of a jam. Please forgive us going forward; it will never be the same without her. Mom loved her outside flowers. This summer God gave her one of the most beautiful crops that she has ever raised. We are especially thankful for that. I believe that taking care of Maci while we were at work was one of Mom’s biggest joys in life. She did things with her outside that should have been beyond her years. I cannot begin to guess how many hours Mom and Dad spent sitting on hard bleachers watching Maci at various events loving almost every minute of it. Mom was a great influence on Maci’s upbringing. For that, we are most grateful. Mom was born to Samuel and Leah Laubhan on December 6, 1934. She grew up on a farm East of Durham, KS.

She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, Durham, Ks on January 31, 1935. She was also confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church on May 9, 1948. She graduated from Durham High School at the top of her class on May 14, 1948. Mom and Dad were married on January 18, 1953. They lived a short time in Hillsboro before moving to the family homestead where they have resided for nearly 69 years. Alma Mae Schlehuber, wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many passed from this world November 10 at 2:13 a.m. into her loving Lord's arms. We will miss her so very much. PS. Mom make sure St. Peter gets you a decent stove and pans. We will be joining you in God’s due time…and we promise not to be late.

Anne, Manitoba, to David and Katherina (Reimer) Toews. She peacefully passed away on November 9, 2021, at the Moundridge Manor, Moundridge, KS. Her first eleven years were spent in Manitoba, after which she moved with her parents to Inman, Ks. During her school years in Manitoba, she attended a French school for a time and finished her formal education in country schools in the Inman area. At the age of twelve she was born again and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, on January 23, 1944, at Inman, KS, by minister Jesse Johnson. On November 2, 1958, she was married to Marvin Ensz at Inman, KS. They enjoyed 56 years of married life together. Two sons and four daughters were born to this union. They lived the first months of their married life with Dad’s parents, and then settled on a poultry and grain farm southeast of Hillsboro. Many of our childhood memories center around the old home on the hill where they raised their family. Mom enjoyed growing flowers, gardening and canning her produce. She was a woman of action, doing tasks promptly as she became aware of them. We remember many guests being at our home for meals. In 2004 our parents moved into Hillsboro, where they enjoyed their retirement years. Dad passed away in 2015 and shortly after, Mom moved into the Moundridge Manor, where her presence was a bright spot to those around her. She took a keen interest in all the details of her grandchildren’s lives. Over the last year she had several visions of Jesus, which were reassuring both to her and us. She was ready and waiting for the call home. She seemed to have a rallying spirit, often rebounding from health issues better than we expected, including a bout with COVID. Her last audible word was a clear, “Goodbye,” leaving us the comfort of knowing she was ready for the angels. Left to cherish precious memories are her six children: Carol, Galen and Teresa, Verna, Larry and Karen, all of Hillsboro, KS, Joyce and Terry Ensz, of Cimarron, KS, and Lois, of Hillsboro, KS; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Penner, De Smet, SD, and Clara Toews, Hillsboro, KS; sister-in-law Olive Toews, De Smet, SD of Marvin’s family; Abe and Louise Ensz, Hillsboro, KS; Linda Regehr, Moundridge, KS, and Betty Ensz, Brooksville, MS; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Bernhard in infancy, John and wife Velda, and Jim; one sister, Alma; brother-in-law Clarence Penner; two infant grandchildren and one infant great-granddaughter. Funeral services were held on November 13, 2021, at the Alexanderfeld Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Hillsboro, KS. Officiating ministers were Orlin Ensz, Roger Unruh and Lonnie Penner.
