Michael A. Bettenbrock, 55, passed away Saturday, November 20, 2021 at his home near Brookville, KS. He was born February 12, 1966 in Salina, KS to Donald and Marian (Finke) Bettenbrock.

Michael was a graduate of Ell-Saline High School, class of 1984. He was a longtime resident of the Brookville area where he was a farmer and stockman and member of the Brookville United Methodist Church.

Michael is survived by his son Cole Bettenbrock (Rachel) of Manhattan; sister Susan Appler (Mike) of Norwalk, IA; and niece Marci King. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Marian Bettenbrock.

Memorial service: 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at United Methodist Church in Brookville, Kansas.&nbsp;

Pat grew up in Corpus Christi, TX and was graduate of Corpus Christ High School Class of 1948. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University.&nbsp; 

Pat married Mert Harvey Schwensen, Jr. on December 28, 1951. They made their home in Clay Center where she was active in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, NEA Study Club, PEO, Library Club and Pi Beta Phi where she served as a national officer, president of the Housing Committee.

Mert preceded her in death on December 18, 1990. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Richard on June 10, 1959; her parents; sister Beverly Murray; and father- and mother-in-law, Mert, Sr. and Gladys Schwensen.&nbsp;

Helen Irene Urban, age 89, died November 16, 2021 in Clay Center, Kansas. She was born in Clay County, KS to Harry and Ruth (Boughton) Craig on May 4, 1932. Helen was raised in Clay Center and was a graduate of Clay Center High School in 1951. 

She married Darrell Urban on January 19, 1951, he preceded her in death on March 26, 2007. 

Helen worked as a nursing assistant at the Clay County Hospital until she and her husband moved to Overland Park, KS. She worked for Shawnee Mission Medical Center for many years. Darrell and Helen moved back to Clay Center after retirement in the early 90s. 

Helen loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and camping. Helen was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she volunteered for the altar guild and vacation Bible school. She was also a member of&nbsp; the women's auxiliary. 

In addition to her husband, Helen is preceded in death by her parents; brothers Vernon, Willis, and Donald Craig; and sisters Mary Johnson and Dorothy Urban.

Sue’s life began on September 4, 1944, in Hutchison. She was the daughter of Alva and Audrey (Colvin) Hysom. Sue was a 1962 graduate of Salina Central High School. 

She was united in marriage to John Utterback on June 5, 1965, at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church in Salina.

Sue worked for most of her life as an administrative assistant for counseling and foster care organizations associated with United Methodist Youthville. The welfare and education of children was extremely important to Sue. She was also a talented cake decorator who created beautiful cakes for countless people’s special occasions. Sue enjoyed quilting, walking 5K events and playing in the bell choir. She especially enjoyed her family; they were her everything. Her loving family includes her husband John Utterback of Salina; children Cindy Vargas of Salina, Sandy (Tom) Lampo of Thornton, CO, and Tim (Nicole) Utterback of Sayville, NY; grandchildren Chantal (Adam) Rasnic, Chelsea (Dylan) Lefort , Grace Vargas, Keagan Lampo, Kailey ( Brandon) Moen, Racheal ( Andrew) Cooper, Cierra (Steven) Hinwood, Sadie Utterback (Jonathon Chiansi), Ella Utterback, Evelyn Utterback and Jamison Dimas; great-grandchildren Austin, Aylah, Kasyn, Aliyah, Maeve, Brooklyn, Creighton, Bradleigh, Beckett, Rhyatt, Aaron, Emberly, Mozya and one on the way; her mother Audrey Hysom of Salina; and siblings Steve (Arlene) Hysom of El Dorado, Sandy Hysom of Wichita, and Jerry Hysom of Salina. Sue passed away on November 15, 2021, at Village Manor in Abilene. She is preceded in death by her father and three infant children.

Sue’s family will gather with friends on Saturday December 4, 2021, at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, Salina for her memorial service at 10 a.m. She will be laid to rest in Gypsum Hill Cemetery at a later time.

Clell Otto Reschke was born on September 5, 1924, in a dugout house near Campo, Colorado, on land homesteaded by his father. The family stayed in the Campo area until 1935, in the midst of the Dust Bowl, when they moved to Dexter, Kansas. At the age of 13, he worked on his uncle’s farm; his wages for the summer work were a 1931 Model-A coupe, and after receiving his license, drove that car to school for the next several years. He graduated from Dexter High School in 1942. Clell continued to work at his parents’ farm until February 1945, when he was inducted into the U.S. Army. After basic training, he was shipped to the Philippines and then to Japan. In the Army, he earned the rank of staff sergeant; as part of the 8th Army, occupational forces, his work was shipping troops back to the U.S. He was honorably discharged in November 1946. After the war, he worked with a custom wheat cutting crew, following the harvest from Oklahoma to North Dakota. From there, he traveled to Idaho to work as a carpenter on a dam being built on the Cascade River. When work stopped for the winter, he landed in Sandwich, Illinois, working at a booster station pumping natural gas. After a year, he transferred to the booster plant at Enterprise Kansas, and worked there for 10 years. On September 11, 1950, he married Vivian Cox. They were blessed with two children, and in 1960, he received the appointment as rural letter carrier for the Enterprise route. In his first year as carrier, he received a Superior Accomplishment Award from the U.S. Postal Service. Clell provided 30 years of reliable mail delivery to the rural Enterprise community, retiring from the Abilene post office in September 1990, with 2,500 hours of unused sick leave. Throughout his adult life, he enjoyed volunteer work. He was a member of the Enterprise Lions Club (since 1965); a volunteer fireman; a volunteer with city improvement projects, including the Enterprise water mains, the fire station-library building, and the eco-park. In fact, Enterprise recognized his work with a special plaque for devoting over 1,478 hours to the fire station-library construction. When Clell and Vivian purchased a winter home in Mercedes, Texas, he was honored with a permanent plaque to commemorate his volunteer work in the Paradise South Park. Numerous friends and neighbors utilized his “handyman” skills. He has been a member of the Enterprise United Methodist Church since 1951, often volunteering for building improvement projects and special events work. Clell was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed delighting children. He loved a good joke, believed in hard work, and never missed an opportunity to enjoy ice cream. Clell passed on November 20, 2021, at Village Manor in Abilene.

He is survived by his wife Vivian; two children, Vickie (and Joe) Fellers, and Steve (and Linda) Reschke; two grandchildren, Laura (and Josh) Piland, and Craig (and Sarah) Reschke; five great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Ruelena McGlasson. 

He is preceded in death by his parents Otto and Cora June Reschke, and two sisters, Dorothy Clouatre and Twila Bumgardner. 

A graveside service is set for Friday, November 26, at 2:00 p.m., at the Mount Hope cemetery of Enterprise. Viewing is at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home on Wednesday 9-5 and Friday 9-12.

Shirleen Kay (Wittkopp) Maass, 76, of Salina, Kansas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 20, 2021.

Shirleen was born to Gilbert and Sarahnee Ailene (Bishop) Wittkopp on July 21, 1945, in El Reno, Oklahoma. 

Shirleen was baptized April 2, 1947, at her grandparents' home in El Reno by Rev. A. C. Dubberstein. She was confirmed on March 22, 1959, at Trinity Lutheran Church in El Reno by Rev. Carl F. Schmidt. Her confirmation verse was 2 Cor. 5:15 and song was “Thine Forever.” 

Shirleen attended Union City Public School for eight years and later graduated from El Reno High School in 1963. After graduating from high school, Shirleen attended Southwestern State College, now known as Southwestern Oklahoma State University, in 1967. After graduation she moved to Ft. Smith, Arkansas to attend Mercy School of Medical Technology. &nbsp;

Shirleen met the love of her life and married Delbert William Maass on August 1, 1969, at Trinity Lutheran Church in El Reno. They had two children, William (Billy) Gilbert and Sarah Elizabeth. &nbsp;

Shirleen retired from Cancer Care Associates, now known as Mercy Care Oncology and Hematology, in 2010. After retirement, Shirleen enjoyed sewing, quilting, scrapbooking, cooking, was a member of the Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) Women’s Auxiliary; Charter, President and past member of Lamplighters LWML, past member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School, vacation Bible school and Midweek. At the time of her death, she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Salina, KS. Shirleen really enjoyed making beautiful handmade cards that she loved to send for family and friends.

Shirleen was preceded in death by her parents Gilbert and Sarahnee Wittkopp, her son William (Billy) Maass, and her loving husband Delbert Maass. &nbsp;

She is survived by her daughter Sarah Maass, of the home, one niece, two nephews, and numerous great-nieces and nephews,&nbsp; and great-great nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

Services for Shirleen Kay Maass will be December 4, 2021, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Okarche, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Okarche OK; to the Center of Family Love Okarche, OK; or a charity of your choice.

Betty Lynette Musick&nbsp;was born on March 25, 1942, in Concordia, Kansas to B. Russell Alcorn and Della La Verta (Wheeler) Alcorn. She graduated from Concordia High School. After one year at Fort Hays State University, she married Richard DeWitt. Three sons were born to this union: Steven, John, and Dennis.

Betty earned her bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She taught English, sociology, and Spanish in Lincoln and Franklin, Nebraska and Concordia and Scandia, Kansas before moving to the Cloud County Clerk’s office where she served for 30 years, 24 as county clerk. Betty was very active in the Kansas County Clerks’ and Election Officials’ Association, serving on many committees for various Kansas state departments and officers. As state president of the CC&amp;EOA, she was instrumental in creating the continuing education program for county clerks at Wichita State University.

In 1988 Betty met and married the love of her life, Karl Douglas Musick.&nbsp; Together Betty and Doug spent many years serving veterans through the VFW and Auxiliary. Betty retired in 2005 and the couple moved to Salina where Betty volunteered as a USD 305 English as a Second Language teacher.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and first husband.

Surviving her are her husband Karl Douglas Musick; sons Steven (Barbara) DeWitt, Bennington, John DeWitt, Salina, and Dennis (Jennifer) DeWitt, Abilene; brothers Ben (Dee) Alcorn, Wichita, and Marion (Jackie) Alcorn, College Station, Texas; granddaughters Ashley (fiancé Jason Hekele) DeWitt, Olathe, and Chelsey (Collin) Giambrone, Olathe; grandsons Tyler (Dr Krista) DeWitt, Salina and Eli DeWitt, Abilene;&nbsp; great-granddaughters Allison LaValette, Olathe, and Reagan DeWitt, Salina; great-grandson Paxton DeWitt, Salina; aunt LaVerne Stringham, Paola; sister-in-law Debra Wilhm, Bentonville, Arkansas; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Cremation was chosen and the family will hold a private celebration of life.

Donald James Thurston was born November 13, 1947, in Concordia to James M. and Leona (Hartley) Thurston. He left his world on Friday, November 19, 2021, at the age of 74.

Don graduated from Delphos High School in 1965 and went directly into the United States Navy, where he reached the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He went to sonar school in Key West, FL where he met his lifelong friend, Wayne Barricks. Don also spent time with his Uncle Charles Hartley, Aunt Dorothy Hartley, and his first cousins. He spent two years on a submarine and a few years on several different ships. Don became a recruiter and spent 20 years in the service to our country. After retiring from the Navy, Don drove big trucks for a number of years.

He settled in Jacksonville, FL and worked there for many years. He moved back to Delphos to be with his mother as she aged. He loved race cars and the racing community. Don had many friends. After the death of his mother, Leona, he spent winters in Jacksonville in his camper parked at his friend’s house who treated him like a grandpa.

Every year, Don hosted hunters from Arkansas for pheasant, turkey, and deer seasons. They too treated him like a grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Leona and his brother, Larry Thurston.

Survivors are his daughter Jessica (Rick) Dubose and their two sons, Bodi and Tommy of Springfield, IL; brother Alan Thurston of Bentonville, AR; sister Virginia (Robert) Plummer of Manhattan; nieces and nephews Melanie, Amy, Jennifer, Brad, Jared, Lisa, Mardee, James, Dan, and Abbie; 16 great-nieces and nephews; and a host of many friends.

Raymond Earl Malone, age 80, passed away at home, in Beavercreek, Ohio, on November 17, 2021, after battling leukemia. He was born January 19, 1941 in McNairy County, Tennessee to his late parents Robert Mack Malone and Annie Lorene Staton. He surpassed the initial life expectancy he was given by six months. He never lost hope and held onto his strength and determination to the very end.

In July 1960, age 19, Ray joined the Air Force. He traveled the world, serving in San Antonio, Texas and Lake Charles, Louisiana before meeting and marrying Johnita P. Reed in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; It was there his first daughter Yvonne was born. Having come from very meager backgrounds, he together with his wife Johnita became prime examples of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps through sheer grit and strong work ethic.

A two year stint in Lampoc, California and then Guam followed by a year in Minot, North Dakota preceded his yea- long service in Vietnam in 1969.&nbsp; From 1970, he spent 7 years in Germany where daughters Ramona and Roxanne were born, before going to Tinker AFB, Oklahoma in 1977, where he ended his 20-year Air Force career in the 3rd MOB on September 30, 1980.&nbsp; These were some of the proudest days of his life, where he made friends and memories that lasted a lifetime and earned the nickname “Hawkeye,” apparently for being good at hitting bullseyes playing darts.&nbsp;

After the Air Force, Ray began his second career selling Buicks.&nbsp; These were the only cars he would sell. He loved cars in general, but always owned a Buick.&nbsp; His favorites were the Wildcat and LeSabre, but when the LeSabre was discontinued he moved to the Enclave.&nbsp;

Ray sold Buicks in Oklahoma City until the mid-1980s oil bust.&nbsp; Then he followed Johnita to her new job at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio where he continued selling cars until Johnita passed away in 2001.&nbsp; It was through car sales that he later met and married Bonnie.&nbsp;

After retiring for the second time, Ray enjoyed traveling, going to breakfast with his buddies and doing his daily sudoku puzzles from the newspaper. He took great pride in his yard and home. He was a southern boy at heart and loved NASCAR. You knew not to call him when the race was on.&nbsp;

Ray will be missed for his colorful stories, jokes, patriotic pride, deep loyalty and bold authenticity. He was unafraid to speak his mind and a true diamond in the rough built from the school of tough love and hard knocks, courtesy of America’s greatest generation. Trustworthy, honest, brave, strong and reliable, he was a man to be admired.

Raymond lived a full life as a brother, husband, father and grandfather.&nbsp; He was a genuine friend to many, father-in-law to David, Ed and Brian, leaving behind wife Bonnie Malone, sister Brenda Malone, daughters Yvonne Ledford, Ramona Norman and Roxanne Albright, grandchildren Corey, Victoria, Taylor, Allison, Samantha, Jackson, Harrison and Hamilton. He was dearly loved and will be forever missed, giving&nbsp; us many memories and leaving an indelible print on our hearts.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the Balch Cemetery, rural Formoso, KS with Rev. Sang Hak Lee, officiating.

Interment will follow the services. Friends and family will gather just prior to the services on Saturday at Balch Cemetery.

Diane Calcagno-Fallis passed peacefully on November 5, 2021, after a hard battle with brain cancer at the age of 60. Her devoted husband of 24 years, Douglas, was by her side. Diane was born on January 2, 1961, in Summit, NJ, the second of three daughters to Charles M. Calcagno and Marion (Borgese) Calcagno. Diane lived her early childhood years in Kenilworth before the family relocated to Berkeley Heights, NJ. After graduating from Governor Livingston high school in 1979, she continued her education studying legal administration. Diane began her professional career at Lane M Ferdinand law firm in Springfield, NJ. After relocating to southern California, she continued to work as a legal administrato, joining Snell &amp; Wilmer law firm in Irvine, CA. Diane met Douglas, and they married in October 1997, settling in Irvine. Daniel, their son, was born in September 1998. In 2006, the family relocated to McPherson, Kansas, Douglas’ hometown.

After arriving in Kansas, Diane took a position in advertising at the McPherson Sentinel, the local newspaper. After five years with the paper, through business contacts, Diane came upon what she considered to be her “dream job” working at the McPherson Opera House Company. She eventually became executive director of the opera house. Through these jobs, Diane made many lasting friendships. Diane had the support of many friends through the social activities she engaged in while in McPherson. Her dear Bunco Babes and her yearly trips with her three Cali co-workers were a big part of her life. One of her proudest moments was seeing her son Daniel graduate from Kansas State University in May 2021. She looked forward to annual trips to Ocean Beach III in N.J. to visit the Jersey shore. Diane loved the beach and collecting shells on the east coast and the west coast. Diane will be remembered as caring and compassionate. She would always listen and give support to anyone who talked with her. Diane's commitment and determination in life is a lasting inspiration and a shining light for all who knew her. Diane is survived by her husband Douglas, her son Daniel, her mother Marion Calcagno, her sisters Karen (Tom Ryan) Hodshon and Arlene (Tim) Lasecla, and many nieces and nephews. January 29, 1932 ~ November 20, 2021 (age 89)

Leroy Bruning was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, November 20, 2021, four months to the day after losing his right leg. He struggled with it and cancer, but he had the Lord by his side all the way. 

Leroy was born at home on the farm in Columbia Township, Ellsworth County, KS, the ninth child of Reinhold and Anna (Lange) Bruning. He attended Columbia School and St. Paul’s Lutheran School, graduating 8th grade. 

He was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he was baptized on February 2, 1932, and confirmed on April 4, 1946, both by Rev. AH Schroeder. 

Leroy was a dedicated farmer all his life. This country boy served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. 

He married Glennys Naegele on November 11, 1956 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. They just celebrated 65 years of wedded life with their family and a card shower. 

This union produced six wonderful children, four girls and two boys, Cindy (Doug) Janssen, Carmen (Dale) Homeier, Connie Beougher, Wade Bruning, Daniel (Tina) Bruning, and Colleen (Rick) Sippel, all of Ellsworth, except Carmen of Wilson. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Norma Clark of Lincoln, NE and Elsie Hunter of Ellsworth. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and their spouses, Delbert (Lucille), Ralph, Floyd, Orval (Hazel), Laverna (Richard) Hunter, Elda (Benno) Warttig, and Eva (Roy) Katzenmeier; and an infant sister. 

Praise the Lord for this wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and good friend.

 </figure>January 29, 1932 ~ November 20, 2021 (age 89)Leroy Bruning was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, November 20, 2021, four months to the day after losing his right leg. He struggled with it and cancer, but he had the Lord by his side all the way. Leroy was born at home on the farm in Columbia Township, Ellsworth County, KS, the ninth child of Reinhold and Anna (Lange) Bruning. He attended Columbia School and St. Paul’s Lutheran School, graduating 8th grade. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he was baptized on February 2, 1932, and confirmed on April 4, 1946, both by Rev. AH Schroeder. Leroy was a dedicated farmer all his life. Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Carolyn was a longtime resident of Ellsworth, KS where she was the secretary, treasurer, and gofer for Kohls Construction. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she was part of the altar guild, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school and catechism.

Carolyn is survived by her husband Kenneth of Ellsworth; son Kevin Kohls of Lawrence; daughter, Cindy Holecek (Darin) of Ellsworth; and grandchildren Braden, Taylor, and Avery Holecek. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Donna Beall and Betty Maier.

Dave Dahlsten, age 78, passed peacefully from this world on October 2, 2021. Dave was born on October 29, 1942, in Wichita, Kansas. He was the youngest of four children born to Clifford and Ruby Dahlsten. Dave was raised in Lindsborg, Kansas where he graduated from Lindsborg High School and attended Bethany College. On November 10, 1962, he married Charlotte Jaquiss. To this union were born their children, John and Michelle.

Dave was employed in the plastics industry. Throughout his career, he created various extrusion processes, established and managed production facilities, and excelled in sales. He was an entrepreneur and inventor at heart. On August 3, 1989, Dave married Carol Schroeder and simultaneously expanded his family considerably with the addition of four stepchildren – Patsy, Jo, Beth, and Tim – and their families. Dave loved to travel and visited every continent except for Antarctica. He was an avid golfer and card shark. He loved a good joke, magic trick and lively conversation. He made friends instantly where ever he went. Dave had a generous spirit which blessed friends and strangers alike. Dave was preceded in death by his parents Ruby and Clifford Dahlsten; his sisters Esther Marie Jaderborg and Anita Thackery; and his stepson, Tim Schroeder. Dave is survived by his wife Carol Schroeder Dahlsten; his children John Dahlsten (Wende) and Michelle Dahlsten Kratofil (Dave); his grandsons Alex Kratofil and Aaron Kratofil; his brother, Ron Dahlsten (Sue); his stepchildren, Patsy Neef (Jim), Jo Littrell, and Beth Chalmers along with their eleven children and seventeen grandchildren; his nieces and nephews, extended family, and numerous friends and colleagues. She married Larry Starr 1964 and to this union were born Angela and Shawn. She later married Charles “Chuck” Hittle on May 12, 1973 in Salina, and to this union, a son, Derrick, was born. He preceded her on Sept. 17, 2014. &nbsp;

She owned and operated Shear Elegance beauty shop, along with helping drive trucks with her husband Chuck.&nbsp; Additionally, she was a longtime hairdresser for the Sisters of St. Joseph Convent, Concordia. Sandra was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia.&nbsp;

Barbara A. Billingsly Pearson Montoya, age 94, of Concordia, KS, passed away at her home, surrounded by her husband, family and caregivers on Thursday, November 18, 2021. She was born on March 20, 1927 in Grand Forks, ND to Clifford &amp; Frances (Wood) Billingsly.

It was Barbara’s wishes to be cremated and a memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, Nov. 26, 2021 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home with Rev. David Strommen officiating. Burial of the cremains will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Friends may sign the register book on Wed., November 24, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., all at the funeral home.&nbsp; 

The family suggests memorials to Meadowlark Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Assoc. in care of the funeral home.

Rosemarie was born in Kingston, New York on July 30, 1928, the oldest child of the late Catherine (Ferraro) and Frank J. Nardi. She is survived by her daughter, Bonita Tillman (Dan Anderson), of San Tan Valley, Arizona; granddaughter, Christina Tomaszewski (Michael), of Mesa, Arizona; and brother, Louis Nardi, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. &nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jim; sister Lucy Dougherty and brothers Vincent and Frank Nardi, Jr. Cremation has been chosen and according to Rosemarie's wishes, no services are planned. Donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Assaria Lutheran Church, sent in care of Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 500 S. Ohio St., Salina, Kansas 67401.

He is also survived by Nieces and Nephews; Natalie Knight-Johnson (Elijah), of Olathe, Kansas Noah Knight, of Dayton, Ohio, Erin Walkenshaw (Robert), of Lawrence, Kansas, Tyler Knight (Cierra), of Shawnee, Kansas, Tiffany Knight, of Banning, California He is preceded in death by his brother, Danny Knight and sister, Michelle Knight.
