Paul M. Sweat, age 53, of Hutchinson, KS, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at his home in Hutchinson with his companion, Carla by his side.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born on August 28, 1971, in Belleville, KS to Loren M. &amp; Deanna L. (Carter) Sweat.

He graduated from Pike Valley High School in 1989.&nbsp;&nbsp;He later graduated from Cloud County Community College in 1995 and then received his bachelor's degree from Kansas State University in Ag Econ in 1996.

He worked for Helena Chemical as a branch manager until his health forced him to retire.

He was involved with several agricultural associations and was a life member of the KSU Alumni Association.

Paul was an avid car collector and he and Carla enjoyed camping together.

He is survived by his companion, Carla Bergstrom, Hutchinson, KS; his parents, Loren &amp; Deanna Sweat, Jamestown, KS; sister, Lynda High (Tim), Topeka, KS and their children, Elvira &amp; Doran High; brother-in-law, Shawn Schweitzer and his children, Mattox, Mya and Jaxton Schweitzer and his special littles, Indy &amp; Miles.

Paul was preceded in death by his grandparents and a sister, Cynthia Schweitzer.

Jane Grosland, 81, of Lindsborg, Kansas, passed away Saturday, April 12th, 2025 with her family by her side.

Jane was born in Northwood, Iowa to Nora and R. Howe Pacey.

Jane proudly served as a Registered Nurse in the United States Air Force. She continued her career as an RN at various hospitals in Missouri and Kansas for over 30 years.

On November 4, 1967, Jane married Lanny Grosland in Northwood, Iowa.

Survivors include a son, Mark Grosland (Becky); a daughter, Jill Wehner (Jim); and three sisters, Breta Jackson (Denny), Mary Hopperstad (Lonny), and Sonya Dahle.

She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Jake, Nate, and Alex Grosland, Sofia and Josh Wehner.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lanny; and brother-in-law, Jim Dahle.

Jane's wishes were to be cremated and placed next to her husband at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, Iowa.

Jane Grosland

On Tuesday April 8, 2025&nbsp;Francis W. Buckley Jr.&nbsp;passed away at the age of 67 peacefully surrounded by family. Francis was born to Francis W. Sr. and Dorothy (Wilson) Buckley on March 7, 1958 in Leavenworth, KS. He moved with his family to Salina in 1959. Francis married Brenda Lamer on April 4, 1980 and they had two daughters. Francis had a full and happy life.

He enjoyed going to Colorado and 4-wheel driving. He loved woodworking, model trains, and tinkering on his computers. He was good at everything he did in his lifetime – he was the man that knew everything about everything. Christmas was his favorite holiday and he looked forward to spending time with his family. He loved spoiling his grandsons and sneaking gifts under the tree for his wife. Sometimes he liked starting projects and not finishing them, just to keep his wife on her toes. He always answered the phone with a “what” when his daughters would call, knowing they needed him…again (secretly loving how much he was needed). He was a man of very few words but would do anything for anyone. He loved nothing more than his family and grandsons.

Francis was the proud local business owner of Downtown Auto Service for over 40 years. He loved his customers and enjoyed visiting with them – consider yourself lucky if you were one that got him to crack a smile.

Francis is preceded in death by his father Francis Sr., mother Dorothy, fathers-in-law Everett Rogers and Howard Lamer and sister-in-law Lori Lamer. He is survived by the love of his life Brenda, daughters Melanie (Chad) Perez, Jennifer Buckley (fiancé Alex Weller), grandsons Mitchell and Reid Perez, sisters Cindy (John) Markel, Theresa (Thad) Beach, brothers-and sisters-in-law Toni (Scott) Taggart, Brad (Cindy) Lamer, Brian Lamer, Renee Nelson, mothers-in-law Judy Lamer and Kari (Tom) Miller, along with many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He is so loved and will be deeply missed by all.

Patricia (Patti) Ann Patterson&nbsp;passed away on April 10, 2025, in Salina, Kansas. She was 69 years old.

Born in Detroit, Michigan to Denia O. (Richardson) Lambert and Glen Lambert on August 4, 1955. Patti was one of six siblings in a lively, close-knit family. She is survived by her beloved children, Twyla (Joseph) Ogle and Allen (Jennifer) Patterson; her cherished grandchildren Patrick, Julian, Addison, Olivia, LillyElla, and Brentlee; and her siblings Gloria Hoskins of Kentucky, Glenn Lambert, Deborah Sparks, Mary Sharpe, and Gary Lambert, all of Michigan.

Patti spent more than 20 years working at the Lutheran Home in Herington, Kansas, where she led the housekeeping and laundry department with compassion, and a deep sense of care. She was especially devoted to the elderly, treating every resident with empathy and a warm heart. She also had a head for numbers, and her knack for bookkeeping and taxes made her the family’s go-to accountant long before TurboTax ever came around.

For over 20 years, she was also a proud and steadfast military spouse — juggling moves, raising children, and always making a house feel like home, no matter where the military sent them.

Patti had a passion for all things creative. She loved crafting, sewing, scrapbooking, puzzles, and reading. She was also unashamedly obsessed with bags of ice, caffeine-free Diet Pepsi, and Christmas cards (the more glitter, the better). Her love for the holidays, family gatherings, and heartfelt traditions made everyone feel extra special. Her love of shopping resulted in random packages from Amazon for her loved ones filled with bulk amounts of toothbrushes, BIC pens, and oversized clothing for her grandchildren.

Above all, Patti was a devoted mother, grandmother and dear friend of many. Her nightly “Goodnight, love you,” became a treasured ritual, one that will echo in the hearts of her children forever. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, quiet strength, fierce love, and a slightly suspicious amount of Diet Pepsi cans.

Her family will miss her deeply, but they are grateful for the years, memories, and unconditional love she gave so freely.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Mildred Ruth (Ireland) Watts was born on December 14, 1926 in Mitchell County, KS. She was the child of Webster C Ireland and Mabel Amelia Gladow Ireland in Mitchell County, Kansas. Mildred’s siblings were Max, Anna, Carl and Richard.&nbsp;

Mildred was raised on the family farm west of Beloit, Kansas until 1940 when her family moved into Beloit, Kansas until 1940 when her family moved into Beloit. Her earliest memory was holding her baby brother Carl. Growing up on the farm they had pet lambs, Betty and Bitty, and a pony named Judy. She got a spanking one day from her dad because she had left Carl sitting on the pony. She also remembered a dress her mother made with apples that she was very proud of. She, her sister Anna, and friend Betty would sneak out to the hay loft to smoke (more pushing boundaries than developing a habit as she was not a smoker). There were many gatherings at her Uncle Walter’s to go hunting coyotes, during which they rode on the fenders and running boards.

Mildred was baptized in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beloit as a child and later joined the Downs Methodist Church. Being involved with the church was very important to Mildred. She joined the Bell Choir and enjoyed playing in it. She helped cook many a funeral luncheon and the Lord's Acre Supper.&nbsp;

Mildred attended Beloit High School and graduated in 1944. One night she went to a dance at the Municipal building in Beloit where she saw a good looking guy from Downs named Kenneth Watts. After dating for a while, she broke up with him when she found out he was a year younger than her, as she didn’t want to go with a younger guy. Love prevailed and they were married on March 21, 1946 in the Lutheran Church in Beloit. To this union 5 children were born, Sherry Annette, Kathy Lynn, Michelle Kay, Kendra JoAnn, and Ronald Ray.&nbsp;

After the children were in school, Mildred started working at the McCannon Nursing Home in Downs as a cook, then at the Downs School lunch program as a cook in 1957. There she became the head cook. Mildred was with the school for 36 years. She will be remembered for “Millie’s Cinnamon Rolls”. The lunches served were the best and everyone has their favorite meal they remember. She was very active in the school, being in the PTA plays, helping with fundraisers, and attending ballgames and programs.&nbsp;

Mildred and Kenneth loved square dancing and traveled all over the area going to dances. One of the proudest times is when granddaughter Dona learned to square dance and attended the Kansas Square Dancing Convention in Salina dancing with them.&nbsp;

Mildred loved playing cards, bridge being her favorite. She and Kenneth spent many evenings with friends playing cards, bridge, pitch, hand and foot, pinnacle, and many others. Mildred belonged to bridge clubs. After entering Downs Care and Rehabilitation, which became her second home and family, the card playing did not stop, Mondays and Tuesday became card party days. Friends would come to play. These days were special to her.&nbsp;

Family was also very important to Mildred. Her five children gave her 15 grandchildren who then gave her 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Mildred loved having a house full of grandchildren. Holidays and Summer would find the house overflowing with everyone visiting. She always cooked her chicken and noodles as that was (almost) everyone’s favorite meal of hers. At Christmas she would make and send out cookies and candy which was well loved and appreciated. Grandma Millie looked forward to babysitting and attending all the programs that the kids were in. She always had time to be a part of the children’s lives.&nbsp;

Mildred passed away on April 9, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. She is preceded in death by parents Webster and Mabel Ireland, her siblings, Max Ireland, Anna Jennison, Carl Irleand, and Richard Ireland, her husband of 76 years Kenneth, daughters Kathy Grelle, Kendra McAllaster, and son Ron Watts, Great grandson Kenneth Woodall, sister Anna Jennison, brothers Max Ireland, Carl Ireland, and Richard Ireland.

She is survived by daughters, Sherry (Jerry) Knouf of Downs, KS; Michelle Hartman, Wichita, KS; Grandchildren Dona (John) Brock, Cumming, GA,; JoAnna Marihugh, Lincoln, NE; Paula (Joe) Kennedy, Wichita, KS; Ryan Lamb, Oklahoma City, OK; Dondi Rust, Park City, UT; Anna (Mario) Gonzales, Vista, CA; Micah McAllaster, San Diego, CA; Katie McAllaster, Beloit, KS; Dana (Johnathan) Watts, Arlington, VA; Kari Watts, Manhattan, KS; Terri (Stephen) Bilgy, TX; Bryan (Bozinka) Grelle, TX; Leslie Grelle, Uvalde, TX; sister-in-law Marge (Carl) Ireland, Downs, KS. 24 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces.

Clinton A. Sain, 52, passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved him most on April 07, 2025 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, KS.

Clinton was born on August 25, 1972 in Caldwell, ID to parents Albert Joe Sain and Delana Lee Choat.

A larger-than-life personality with a heart just as big, Clint was the kind of man who could light up a room with a joke often paired with a cold drink in one hand and a grill spatula in the other.

Born with a fierce spirit and a love for living fully, Clint was a man of many passions. He spent his younger days in the boxing ring, where he first learned the grit and determination that would define his life. As an adult, he found his calling behind the wheel of a semi truck. He took immense pride in his work, and there wasn’t a vehicle or home project he couldn’t fix or improve with his hands and his know-how.

A devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan, he cheered his team with unmatched loyalty, often surrounded by family, snacks, and a cold beer in his hand. His competitive streak shined brightest at the game table—whether it was Pinnacle, cribbage, or dominos, he played to win, and usually did. Numbers came naturally to him, but more than that, he just loved the camaraderie of a good challenge with people he cared about.

He was the life of the party, not because he tried to be, but because being around him made life feel a little lighter. He had a joke for every moment and a good movie line worth quoting for the next 20 years. Clint lived to help others—whether they were family, friends, or complete strangers. He stood firm in his values, always guided by his morals and an unshakeable will.

More than anything, Clint loved his family. Fishing trips with loved ones were sacred moments of peace and laughter. He relished every opportunity to gather, celebrate, and just be present.

Clint leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, humor, and hard work. He taught us all to live boldly, speak honestly, and love fiercely.

Though he’s gone, his voice, laughter, and larger-than-life spirit will echo in our hearts forever.

In his honor, blare a song he loved, tell a good joke, and maybe play a round of pinnacle—he’d like that.

Clinton A. Sain

Eleanor L. Berkley, 92, Tescott, died Thursday, April 10, 2025. She was born on the family farm near Tescott on Tuesday, June 7, 1932, to Carl and Ruth (Lane) Christenson.

          Eleanor attended school in Tescott and was a 1949 graduate of Tescott High School.

          After graduation, she worked at the Salina Journal Newspaper until marrying Hal Berkley on August 30, 1952. They then moved to Lawrence until 1955 when Hal graduated from KU and then they moved back to Tescott.

          In her younger years, she loved to golf and she was on a bowling team for many years.  She was known for her famous coconut cream pies that she donated for many Lions Club dinners and other fundraising events, and she would bake birthday cakes for all the Bank of Tescott employees. Even though she was terrified of water, Eleanor taught many kids how to swim in their pool. She volunteered countless hours in Tescott, and she never met a stranger. She was a longtime member of the Tescott United Methodist Church where she served as U.M.W. president for 25 years. After retiring, she and Hal enjoyed traveling and following their grandchildren with all of their activities.

          Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, John Spurgeon; and siblings, Clyde Christenson, Alice Woody and her husband, Gerald, and Imogene Von Fange and her husband, Donald.

          Survivors are her husband of 72 years, Hal Berkley; children, Karla Spurgeon, Karen Deckert and her husband, Scott, Jeff Berkley and his wife, Denise, and Calvin Berkley and his wife, Tina; sister-in-law, Alma Christenson;  grandchildren, Marika Taylor (Adam), Rebekah Berkley (Chris Contee), Brenna Bliven (Patrick), Rachel Berkley (Kyle Herbert), Sam Deckert (Katie), Patrick Spurgeon, Luke Deckert (April Woody), Collin Berkley (Katie) and Megan Berkley; great-grandchildren, Ainsley, Leyton, Harvey, Hadley, Roselyn, Finley, Ivy, Autumn, Elsie, Wesley, Archer, and Hal; step-grandchildren, Tyler Adams (Megan) and Dalton Baker (Starr); step-great-grandchildren, Cadience, Colt, Ashton, Brynleigh, Etta, and Hollis; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mark Ray Griggs, 68, of Salina, passed away on Monday April 8, 2025. Mark was adopted by Douglas Griggs and Laverne (Olson) Griggs-Hiemstra in October of 1956.

Mark spent his early childhood in Iowa. He moved with his family when he was 3 to Overland Park and later to Garden City in 1963. Mark loved to swim, spending every summer at the city pool. He perfected his dive not long after finding the diving board. Mark had a knack for playing piano and was able to play by ear any song he heard. Mark’s love for music started with piano and expanded into dancing and collecting vinyl records. In 1975 Mark graduated from Garden City Senior High School. After graduating Mark worked at Harold’s Sirloin of America. In 1990 Mark moved to Salina and soon fell in love with the town, making Salina his home. Mark enjoyed being part of the community and making new friends. He loved his family and especially his nieces and nephews.

Mark is preceded by his parents, Douglas and Laverne Griggs, and his niece Kasandra Cannaley.&nbsp;

Mark is survived by his sister Karen Cannaley of Overland Park and his nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends.&nbsp;

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 2025, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, Kansas. The burial will take place the following day at 12 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa.

Reid Hale Rogers, 76, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Colby, KS surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 23, 1948, to Ranard and Margaret (Hale) Rogers in Norton, KS. Reid was raised in Selden, KS and attended school there until his senior year when he attended and graduated from Decatur County High School in Oberlin. Reid obtained his associate’s degree from Colby Community College and also attended Fort Hays State University.

Reid was united in marriage to Jo Ann (Jody) Hedge on July 26, 1969, in Hoxie, KS and they lived the majority of their married life in Rexford, KS where they raised their two daughters, Penny and Amber.

Reid joined his dad working at Rogers’ Repair Shop and they farmed in the Selden area for many years. Later, he went to work for the Thomas County Sheriff’s Department as a Detention Deputy.

Reid was an avid outdoorsman and greatly enjoyed both hunting and fishing, including annual elk hunting trips to Wyoming and fishing in Canada with family and friends. He taught his grandsons how to hunt and fish and was very proud that they shared his love for these hobbies.

Reid’s greatest love was his family. He loved attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. He and his wife, Jody, spent countless hours traveling to sporting events, and various other activities in which the kids participated. In recent years he enjoyed spending time with his six great grandchildren, three of whom were named after him.

Reid was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Rick, and several in-laws. He is survived by his wife, Jody, of 55 years; two daughters, Penny (Matthew) Vogler of Colby, KS, and Amber (David) McCauley of Great Bend, KS; grandchildren, Cole (Danielle) Christensen, Taylor (Tyson) Espinosa, Jordan (Kyle) Zachgo, Kirstyn (Justin) Pacheco, Halle Latham, Landen Vogler, and Alyssa McCauley; great grandchildren, Miles and Cooper Espinosa, Briar and Haynes Zachgo, James Christensen, and Carter Pacheco.; sister, Diana Fowler and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the Rexford Community Church, Rexford, KS. Lunch to follow.

Norbert Fabian “Norb” Freidhof, 77, of Assaria, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025.

Norb was born in Elma, Iowa on July 19, 1947, to Bernice (Nibaur) and Fabian Freidhof.

He proudly served in the United States Army as an SFC.

On November 23, 1968, Norb married Roxanne Rouse.

Survivors include his wife, Roxanne Freidhof;  three sons, Matt Freidhof (Amy), of Des Moines, Iowa; Chris Freidhof (Kara), of New Philadelphia, Ohio; Dan Freidhof (Teresa), of Salina, Kansas; a brother, Alan Freidhof (Norma); and a sister, Colleen Heying (Mike), of Elma, Iowa.

He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild, and another great grandchild on the way.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Louise and Jim Rouse.

A Memorial gathering will be held from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Thursday, April 17, 2025 at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, Salina.

Margarita Moreno Castro, 85, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, April 9th, 2025 surrounded by her family.Margarita was born in Llera, Tamaulipas, Mexico on July 20, 1939 to Maria Castro.Survivors include her sons and daughters, Ismael Martinez (Norma) of Monterrey, Mexico; Hector Martinez (Rocio) of Salina, Kansas; Sandra Martinez Moreno of Salina, Kansas; Olga Calzada (Gumaro) of Salina, Kansas; Pedro Martinez (Andrea) of Monterrey, Mexico; and Nelly Martinez (Gustavo Moya) of Salina, Kansas.Grandchildren, Paola, Ivan, Brian, Alex, Juanito, Stephanie, Kassandra, Anthony, Rodrigo, Gumaro Jr., Abram, Omar, Edgar, Arely, Misael, Sebastian, Jenifer, and Gustavo.She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren.

Janette T. Zuendel, a remarkable woman whose presence touched the lives of many, found eternal peace on January 11, 2025 at the age of 96. Born as Janette Thille on February 20, 1928, she navigated through life with a spirit that radiated warmth and kindness. Her journey was marked by an unwavering devotion to her family and a sense of duty in her career.

Janette dedicated 37 years of her life to public service with the federal government, culminating in her role as Contract Operation Branch Chief. Her professional accomplishments were a testament to her steadfast commitment to her work and her exceptional professionalism, which earned her respect and admiration from colleagues and friends alike.

Above all, Janette cherished the beautiful relationships she cultivated with her family. She was the beloved daughter of Fred and Geneva (Baird) Thille. As a mother, she lovingly supported her daughter, Michelle, through every success and challenge. Janette taught Michelle how to navigate life’s obstacles, instilling in her the values of resilience and faith. Their incredible bond was complemented by her love for her son-in-law, Daniel and her grandchildren, Matthew and Laura Howe, who brought immense joy to her life.

Janette's timeless wisdom extended to her sister Neva Claire (Thille) Smith, from whom she drew strength and comfort throughout their journey together. In addition to her immediate family, she leaves behind a legacy of love that flourishes through her 12 nieces and nephews and a community of wonderful friends, with whom she shared lots of laughter and at times tears.

Nature was a canvas upon which Janette painted many cherished memories. She found solace in the beauty of the great outdoors, particularly during hikes in Yellowstone, where at times she encountered heart-shaped rocks. To her, these stones were divine reminders of her unique place in the world, affirming her belief of God’s immense love for us. Each day, she prayed with confidence, knowing that God understood her struggles and provided mercy and grace to help in her every need.

Throughout her 35,391 days on this Earth, Janette demonstrated what it meant to live fully and selflessly. Her remarkable spirit, compassion for others, and joyful laughter will echo in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

Janette T. Zuendel will forever be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, whose legacy of love, grace and kindness continues to inspire all of us.

Devon L. Regnier, Lawrence, Kansas resident, age 36, entered into rest on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;He was born on May 4, 1988, in Beloit Kansas to Ronny and Sally (Morgan) Regnier.

He graduated from LaCrosse High School in LaCrosse, Kansas, in 2007, where he was a member of the football and track teams and was nominated as Homecoming King. He later attended Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas.

Devon married Jessica Lynn Ortega on May 28, 2016, in Lawrence, Kansas. The couple were high school sweethearts, having met when Devon was the "new kid" at LaCrosse High School. He quickly made his mark, befriending everyone and building strong relationships with his peers and teachers. When he wasn't in class, Devon could often be found in the weight room or joking around with friends.&nbsp;

Devon and Jessica later settled in Lawrence, KS, where they created a life full of memories and adventures. Together, they shared their home with two beloved dogs, whom Jessica says “only listen to Devon.”

Devon worked as a Utility Operator for the City of Lawrence, Kansas, for the past 9 years. He was a highly respected employee who created lifelong friendships with his colleagues.

He was a passionate weightlifter, music enthusiast, avid gamer, and the best Uncle Devon to his nieces and nephews. With an incredible sense of humor, Devon could turn anything into a joke. His smile and contagious laugh will always be remembered.

He is survived by his wife Jessica of the home in Lawrence, KS; father, Ronny Regnier, Linwood, KS; mother, Sally Williams, Kinsley, KS; two sisters, Kalyn Regnier, LaCrosse, KS; Clarissa Rowley, Topeka, KS; and his brother, Mikel Jerdoe.&nbsp;

Devon was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leroy and Francis Regnier;&nbsp;

Marilyn and Jesse “J.C.” Morgan; and his cousin Darren Achterberg.

Mark E. Hassman, 66, of Salina, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.  He was born in Salina on July 24, 1958, and resided there his entire life.

Mark was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church.  He was a graduate of Salina South High School in 1976 and afterward attended three years at Kansas Wesleyan University.  During his high school years, he enjoyed the activity of competitive debate and later became an assistant coach for four years at Salina Central High School.

His parents owned Hassman Termite and Pest Control and Mark grew up learning that business.  He was a two-time President of the Kansas Pest Control Association (KPCA), a two-time winner of the Man of the Year award, and for several years was a chairman of the Government Affairs committee of the KPCA.   Mark was also a published writer in several pest control publications over the years.

He was devout in his faith and was proud to be a long-time member of Christ the King Lutheran Church.  In the church he served on many committees and on the Board of Directors.

On December 6, 1986, he was lucky enough to be married to Mary Werling.  From this union two girls were born – Amanda and Ashley.  Mark was very proud of both of them.  He had many great memories of them both growing up and as adults.

Mark is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Marlene Hassman; grandparents, Henry and Mabel Hassman and Carl and Helen Alt.

He is survived by his wife Mary; two daughters, Amanda (Matt) Biolsi, and Ashley Hassman; brother Mike (Angie) Hassman; nephew Andrew Hassman; and his beloved “grand-dogs.”

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2025, at Ryan Mortuary.  Family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 111 W Magnolia Road, Salina.  Graveside will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

Stan Leroy Kenton, 70, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Pleasant View Home in Inman, KS.&nbsp;

Stan was born November 28, 1954, in Wichita, KS, the son of Eugene Cecil and Mary Lois (Stansel) Kenton.&nbsp; He graduated from Canton High School in 1972.&nbsp; On January 20, 1986, Stan was united in marriage to Kelly Patrick in Las Vegas, NV, and they were blessed with loving daughters, Megan, Shawna, and Miranda.

He retired from Johns Manville where he was a Machine Chief, working there for 38 years.

Survivors include his three daughters, Miranda Walters (Greg) of McPherson, KS, Shawna Kenton of McPherson, KS, and Megan Kenton-Smith (Clinton) of Detroit Lakes, MN; six grandchildren, Bentley Konen, Riggs Walters, Rhodes Walters, Greydan Smith, KayDee Smith, and Adelyne Smith; siblings, Sheryl Railsback (Gene) of McPherson, KS, Marsha Rageth of McPherson, KS, and Winston Kenton (Sally) of Wichita, KS; former wife, Kelly Patrick and her husband, Jeff Ponting, and their son, Kolin, of McPherson, KS; several nieces &amp; nephews; and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Clarence Kenton; and a sister, Zelma Kenton.

Stan Leroy Kenton

Frances Ann Drummond passed away on April 4, 2025, in Salina. She was born November 13, 1929, to Frank and Anna (Jaros) Derganz in Monaca, PA.

Her father passed away when she was only 9 years old, and in 1945 her mother re-married and they moved to Salina, KS. She graduated from Salina High School and Brown Mackie College.

She married Elbert (Ace) Drummond in 1952 in Salina, KS.

Frances worked for Richmond, Glover and Barbee Insurance, Central Savings &amp; Loan, and retired after 25 years of service for the Catholic Diocese of Salina. She was also the bookkeeper for Ace Auto Shop and The Ritz Theater in the1960’s and for Drummond Farms into her early 90’s. In her retirement, she worked part-time at the Minneapolis Library for many years and also served on the Central Kansas Library Board.

Frances was a long-time member of the Immaculate Conception Church and was also an active member of the VFW Auxiliary in Minneapolis. She and Ace were very active with the Golden Wheel and delivered Meals on Wheels for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather Glen Lee, and her husband Elbert “Ace” Drummond.

Frances is survived by her son, Paul (Jerri) Drummond; daughter Denise (Sheldon) Frain; and son, Tony (Susan) Drummond. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Leslie (Matt) Parker and grandson, Chris (Michelle) Drummond; as well as great -grandchildren Micah, Levi, and Claire Parker; Connery, Lennox, and Ace Drummond.

She was born November 13, 1929, to Frank and Anna (Jaros) Derganz in Monaca, PA.Her father passed away when she was only 9 years old, and in 1945 her mother re-married and they moved to Salina, KS. She graduated from Salina High School and Brown Mackie College.She married Elbert (Ace) Drummond in 1952 in Salina, KS.Frances worked for Richmond, Glover and Barbee Insurance, Central Savings &amp; Loan, and retired after 25 years of service for the Catholic Diocese of Salina. She was also the bookkeeper for Ace Auto Shop and The Ritz Theater in the1960’s and for Drummond Farms into her early 90’s. In her retirement, she worked part-time at the Minneapolis Library for many years and also served on the Central Kansas Library Board.Frances was a long-time member of the Immaculate Conception Church and was also an active member of the VFW Auxiliary in Minneapolis. She and Ace were very active with the Golden Wheel and delivered Meals on Wheels for several years.She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather Glen Lee, and her husband Elbert “Ace” Drummond.Frances is survived by her son, Paul (Jerri) Drummond; daughter Denise (Sheldon) Frain; and son, Tony (Susan) Drummond. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Leslie (Matt) Parker and grandson, Chris (Michelle) Drummond; as well as great -grandchildren Micah, Levi, and Claire Parker; Connery, Lennox, and Ace Drummond. Frances Ann Drummond

Karen Sue (Grotz) Winkel, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025, at Downs Care and Rehabilitation. Born on January 17, 1942, in St. Paul, Kansas, she graced this world with her loving spirit for over 83 years, leaving behind a treasure trove of memories that will warm the hearts of all who knew her.

Karen spent an extraordinary 65 years as a dedicated homemaker and farm wife, a role she embraced with unmatched passion and devotion. She was not only known for her incredible sourdough bread and daily freshly baked cookies but also for her exquisite gardening skills and her talent for canning. People often found themselves feeling at home in her kitchen, never leaving with an empty stomach. Karen's famous cinnamon applesauce remains a cherished dish, fondly remembered by family and friends alike.

Raised with strong values, Karen completed her high school education at St. John's Catholic School in 1960. It was there that she developed the character traits that would define her life: a warm heart, unwavering resilience, and an exceptional ability to put her family first. She married the love of her life, Karl Peter Winkel, on June 16, 1960, at St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit, Kansas. Together, they celebrated a remarkable 65 years of marriage, with one of the highlights being a memorable trip to Alaska for their 50th wedding anniversary.

Throughout her life, Karen cherished her family above all else. Her children—Kari (Joe) Eilert, Steven (Judi) Winkel, Christopher Winkel, and Kurt Winkel—were her pride and joy, and she adored each of her 16 grandchildren. Whether it was crafting delightful projects with her sewing machine for her granddaughters or sewing baby quilts for the new grandbabies, Karen found immense joy in nurturing the next generation. Her deep love for her family was evident in her everyday actions; she took delight in their successes and never hesitated to brag about them to anyone who would listen.

Aside from her family life, Karen's personality shone brightly. She was known for her level-headed nature and sweet disposition. Her grandchildren often brought laughter into her home, delighting in the playful thrill of hiding rubber rats to give her a gentle scare. These playful memories exemplified her spirit—filled with joy, light, and an infectious love for life.

Karen's life was also enriched by her education, hobbies, and cherished relationships. She enjoyed gardening, baking, and engaging in crafts, always finding ways to express her creativity. One of her most treasured memories from her youth was a trip to Whittier, California, where she visited her Aunt and Uncle, a journey she fondly recalled throughout her life.

Karen leaves behind her beloved husband, Karl P. Winkel of Glen Elder; her siblings: Gary (Fe) Grotz of Rio Vista, California; Carole Schneider of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Alan (Kathy) Grotz of Mission Viejo, California; and Joy (Jim Pillard) Grotz of Beloit. She is also survived by her adoring children and their families, as well as 16 cherished grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 6 nieces and nephews.

She was greeted in heaven by her parents, Joyce and Noel Grotz; her brother-in-law, John Schneider; her son, Karl P. Winkel, Jr.; her grandson, Mark Winkel; and her great-nephew, Sam Schneider.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Karen's life during the visitation at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City on Thursday, April 10, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a vigil rosary service at 7:00 PM. Karen Sue (Grotz) Winkel

Father William J. Surmeier was born in Hays, Kansas on January 7, 1940, the second son of Anton and Gertrude (Fellhoelter) Surmeier and passed away on April 3, 2025.

He attended St. Paul’s Catholic School in Angelus, Kansas, Thomas County Grade School in Oakley, and St. Francis High School Seminary in Victoria. He attended college and theology at Conception Seminary, Conception, Missouri, and was ordained a priest for the Salina Diocese on May 27, 1965 in his home parish in Oakley. Fr. Bill took a year-long sabbatical and earned a Master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University, Columbia, Maryland. He earned his Doctorate in Psychology from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana.

He served as an associate pastor in the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish, Salina, from ‘65-‘67, St. Xavier’s Parish, Junction City, ‘67-‘69, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Hays, ‘69-‘72, Sacred Heart and St. Michael Parishes in Greenleaf/Kimeo ’71, and Team Ministry ‘72-‘82 at Selden, Oberlin, Logan, Leoville, New Almelo and Densmore. He was pastor of St. Mary Queen of the Universe Parish, Salina, ‘82-91, St. Nicholas of Myra, Hays, ‘93-2005, Sacred Heart and St. Thomas, Plainville and Stockton. 2005-‘08, and St. Mary Parish, Gorham, 2008-‘14.

Fr. Bill served as Priest Council president for many terms during the 1970s and ‘80s under Bishops Cyril Vogel, Daniel Kucera, and George Fitzsimons. Fr. Bill was known for his dedication to the youth of our diocese. He was CYO Director from 1969 to 1984 under Bishop Vogel, developing a strong youth ministry and the first Youth Council for our diocese.

One of Fr. Bill’s passions was empowering Lay Ministry in our diocese, and with the aid of the Parish Pastoral Council at St. Nick's, he was the first to hire a Pastoral Administrator, Arvilla Jueneman, for St. Nicholas of Myra Parish.

His vocation also led him to full-time counseling for Catholic Charities in Hays from 1993 to 2014 until he retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Gertrude, two sisters, Clara Zimmerman and Theresa Surmeier, and one brother, Alvin Surmeier.

He is survived by two brothers, Tony Surmeier of Colby and Henry Surmeier of Springfield Oregon, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and brother priests.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church with Bishop Gerald Vincke officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 pm in St. Joseph Cemetery in Oakley. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday at the church. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Salina Diocese in care of Youth Ministry.
