James Michael Anderson, age 56, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022 at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, KS.&nbsp; He was born on October 17, 1965 in Concordia, KS to Thomas L. and Mary (Barajas) Anderson, Sr.

He graduated from Concordia High School in 1984.&nbsp; He worked as a machinist for Vortex in Salina, KS and Alstom Pre-Heater and Henry Enterprises, both in Concordia.&nbsp; 

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia.

James is survived by his son James T. Anderson (Libby), Lyons, KS; brothers Tom Anderson, Concordia, KS; David Anderson, Salina, KS; Wesley Anderson, Salina, KS and John Anderson, Concordia, KS and grandchildren Leo, Landon and Jeanna.

He was preceded in death by his fiancé Gina Cyphers; his parents and a sister, Dawn M. Anderson

Cremation was selected and there will be a memorial service and burial of the cremains at a later date.

Judy Kay Wyckoff, 68, of Abilene passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2022. She was born January 9, 1954 in Clay Center, Kansas the daughter of Bill and Phyllis (Beals) Shields. Judy grew up in the Abilene area and graduating from Abilene High School in 1972. 

On June 10, 1972 she was united in marriage to Larry Gene Wyckoff.

 She worked as a dietary aide for different nursing homes and she later worked at Walmart.

 Judy is survived by her daughter, Wendy (Jason) Wyckoff of Ramona; brother Philip (Penny) Shields of Branson, Missouri; two grandchildren, Gene and Phoenix Wyckoff. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Bill Shields, Jr.&nbsp;

A Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. on Saturday until services time. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the New Trail Fellowship Church.

George is survived by three sons, Mark Fabin of Salina, Craig Fabin of Kansas City, and Brad Fabin of Mt. Pleasant, IN.

Kevin William Wilson, 52, passed away on March 6, 2022 after a short battle with cancer. Kevin knew that he was loved, and he passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.

Kevin grew up in Iowa. He moved to Chapman, Kansas in his older years and went to work with his father-in-law, Julian Longoria. Kevin didn’t particularly love the job, but he loved working and being with Julian.

Kevin met his wife Amy Vargas in the summer of 2008, and they were married in December of 2009 and remained married until Kevin left his earthly home to be with Jesus.

Anyone that knew Kevin also knew that he was never one to stand still and watch the grass grow!

 He was always doing something. He completed the construction program at Salina Area Tech and said that he felt like that was his biggest accomplishment in life. 

Kevin was always the first person to offer to lend a hand when someone needed help with something; anything! If he couldn’t figure out how something worked, he would keep at it until he could make it. He was always building or creating something! Kevin was very obstinate at times and when anyone told him, “You can’t do that it will never work!” Kevin would always respond, “watch me!” That is how he lived his life, with no apologies.

Kevin helped care for his Papa, Julian, until his death in 2020. He also spent countless hours helping his mother Cheryl and his honorary mother, Mary.

Kevin had a wicked sense of humor and loved to joke and laugh with his family. Kevin became an honorary Vargas in 2010. His Uncle Rick taught him to cook Mexican food, complete with apron and sombrero, for his son James’ 21st birthday.

Kevin was a wonderful man. He became part of the Vargas family and was always surrounded by love. Whether you were a blood cousin, uncle, aunt, mother, brother, or sister, Kevin would always consider you family. He will be a missing link to our family chain and his presence will be missed.

He is preceded in death by his “Papa” Julian Longoria, brother, John Vargas, and sister Laura Cannon.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife Amy, son James Parker; mother Cheryl Longoria; father Jim Wilson; honorary mother Mary Vargas; brothers Jim Davis, Mike Davis, and best friend and brother Leroy Vargas; sisters Patti Tyler; Maria Koury; Rachel Rock (Sam); and Wendi Fullilove. Kevin is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles, and many special friends as well as his two fur babies, Peyton and Shorty.

Amy would personally like to thank Dr. Jeffrey Geitz; Dr. Yazan Abuodeh; and Dr. Cameron Petro-Sakuma as well as all the staff at Tammy Walker Cancer Center. Special thank you to Hospice of Salina and Leslie Schrader.

Lucy Mary Peck, 100, Salina, died Tuesday, March 8, 2022. She was born on November 4, 1921 in Selden, KS, to Jacob and Catherine (Goscha) Koerperich. 

Lucy and William Peck were married on August 26, 1949. Bill preceded her in death in 2007.

Lucy worked for both Asbury and St. John’s Hospitals in housekeeping. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral.

She was preceded in death by a son Dennis; and two grandchildren, Jeremiah and Jamie Peck; and four sisters and a brother.

Survivors include three sons Robert and wife Cindy, Salina; Melvin and wife Margaret, Assaria, and Donald and wife Leigh, Newton; and a daughter Barbara Bradbury and her husband Bob, Salina. Her grandchildren are Eli (Amber) Peck, Aaron (Michelle) Peck, Christopher Peck, Joshua (Nichole) Peck, James (Marisa) Pickrell, Justin (Sarah) Pickrell, Lucas (Morgan) Bradbury, Joshua Bradbury, Bobbie Kay Bradbury, Jennifer (Dave) Collins and Jessica (Jeff) Reimer. She has 24 grea- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning March 12, 2022 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral. A rosary service will be held in the church at 9:30 a.m. that morning prior to the Mass. Friends may call at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of the Mass.

KANSAS CITY -&nbsp;Catherine “Cathy” Rose Sweeney, 86, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2022 after a long illness with dementia.&nbsp; She was born on August 31, 1935 in Salina, Kansas to Margaret (Burghart) Bachofer and Daniel J. Bachofer, Sr.&nbsp; She resided in Salina until 2011, and then moved to the Kansas City area.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Catherine attended Sacred Heart Cathedral grade school and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1953.&nbsp; She was united in marriage to Robert Michael Sweeney on August 27, 1955, who passed away in 1967.&nbsp; As a single parent and widow, she raised two young children on her own.

Catherine was trained as a draftsman by Southwestern Bell telephone company.&nbsp; She was the first employee of Schilling Institute which opened in 1965, working with director Henry Neely, Jr.&nbsp; Schilling Institute was the state’s only technical school offering two-year training programs in aviation, engineering and technology (later becoming Kansas State University-Salina).&nbsp; As a draftsman there, she drew up the blueprint plans for all fifty buildings on the base.&nbsp; She also worked for the architectural firms Wilson &amp; Company, Bucher &amp; Willis, and other independent architects in Salina.&nbsp; In a career shift, she later became a certified nursing assistant providing home care.

Catherine was a strong and independent woman.&nbsp; She enjoyed celebrating the holidays, traveling, dining out and loved her cats. Music brought her joy and comfort. She loved jitterbug dancing and was able to play the piano “by ear” up until the last few years of life.&nbsp; Many lives were touched with Catherine’s warm and fun-loving personality.

She cherished her family and was happiest when her children and grandchildren visited her.&nbsp; She will be missed by her family and good friends.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband Robert; her parents; sister Ruth Wight; and brother Daniel J. Bachofer, Jr. &nbsp;

Left to mourn her passing are her brothers Robert Bachofer of Salina and Francis Bachofer of Sacramento, California; her children Stephan Sweeney of Salina, Elaine Sweeney-Alarico of Basehor, KS; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Helen Sweeney, and many nephews and nieces.

The family expresses appreciation to all the wonderful doctors, nurses, CNAs, and hospice staff at the nursing homes and hospitals who provided invaluable care to Catherine for many years.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina with graveside services at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, and a luncheon at the Sacred Heart Cathedral parish hall.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Bachofer, Sr.&nbsp; She resided in Salina until 2011, and then moved to the Kansas City area.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Catherine attended Sacred Heart Cathedral grade school and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1953.&nbsp; She was united in marriage to Robert Michael Sweeney on August 27, 1955, who passed away in 1967.&nbsp; As a single parent and widow, she raised two young children on her own.Catherine was trained as a draftsman by Southwestern Bell telephone company.&nbsp; She was the first employee of Schilling Institute which opened in 1965, working with director Henry Neely, Jr.&nbsp; Schilling Institute was the state’s only technical school offering two-year training programs in aviation, engineering and technology (later becoming Kansas State University-Salina).&nbsp; As a draftsman there, she drew up the blueprint plans for all fifty buildings on the base.&nbsp; She also worked for the architectural firms Wilson &amp; Company, Bucher &amp; Willis, and other independent architects in Salina.&nbsp; In a career shift, she later became a certified nursing assistant providing home care.Catherine was a strong and independent woman.&nbsp; She enjoyed celebrating the holidays, traveling, dining out and loved her cats. Music brought her joy and comfort. She loved jitterbug dancing and was able to play the piano “by ear” up until the last few years of life.&nbsp; Many lives were touched with Catherine’s warm and fun-loving personality.She cherished her family and was happiest when her children and grandchildren visited her.&nbsp; She will be missed by her family and good friends.Catherine was preceded in death by her husband Robert; her parents; sister Ruth Wight; and brother Daniel J. Verle D. Simpson, 92, of Salina, passed away on March 6, 2022 in Salina, KS.

Verle was born in Topeka, KS to Oscar and Vera Simpson on December 1, 1929.&nbsp; Verle graduated Salina High school and attended Kansas Wesleyan. 

He served in the Army, 42nd Engineering Construction Battalion during the Korean War. 

He married Doris E. Peterson in 1953. They were married for 67 wonderful years. 

He worked as the production manager for Premier Pneumatics for 30 years, retiring in 1996. 

Verle was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Verle is survived by his spouse Doris; daughter Jeri Terkildsen; son Marty (Doreen) both of Salina; five grandchildren; Ricky Duncan (Marlene); Cari Miller (Scott); Paige, Brooke and Drew Simpson and four great-grandchildren.

Verle was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marleen Freeman.

The graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15th at Roselawn Memorial Park.

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Janey Hummel, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend to all whose lives she touched, on March 8, 2022. Janey was born in Salina, KS on July 6th, 1949 the daughter of Ralph and Bonnie (McDonald) Haslouer. She graduated from Chapman High School, received her Bachelor's degree from Kansas State University and her Masters from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She married Forrest Hummel Jr. in October of 1970. Together they were the beloved parents of Forrest Hummel and his wife Krissy; Chris Hummel and his wife Mandy. Janey was an extremely proud grandmother of Hailey (Rooke Coleman), Forrest (Logan), Kyla, Carter, and Campbell. She is also survived by her sisters; Jeanne Rziha (Jerry), Susan Denney (Ron), Mary Monaco, Carol Whitehair (Kirk), Patricia Martel and brothers; Chuck Haslouer (Ellen), and Bill Haslouer (Linda), brother-in-law Mike Bevilacqua and finance Richard Johnson. All of these she loved and touched deeply. She was preceded in death by her husband Forrest Hummel Jr in 2009 and her sister Louise Bevilacqua in 2021. Janey lived a full life as a wonderful mother, sister and mentor while working as a teacher. She has touched so many lives with her humor, caring heart and her incredible smile. She loved being outside, whether working in her yard, gardening, or playing a round of golf. Most of all she loved her family and always wanted to be surrounded by them. She had a special bond with her grandchildren and cherished any time she got to spend with them. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. A celebration of Janey's life will be held Friday March 11th, 2022 at St Cecilia Catholic Church, 1830 West Grand Haysville, Kansas. A Rosary will be said at 10:30 am followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Graveside services will follow at 4 pm at St Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Abilene, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Left to mourn her passing is her husband of 62 years, John; children, Connie Warta (Flint), of Ellsworth, Judy Spaeny (John), Gypsum, Johnnie Adam (Heidi), of Salina; siblings, Esther Harner, of Salina, Frank Montague, of Valley Center, Larry Montague, of Knob Knoster, Missouri; grandchildren, Matthew Warta (Stacy), Lindsey Voeltz (Jordan), Adam Spaeny (Brittany), Breanna Sirois (Grant), Slade Adam, Ty Adam, Jase Adam, Kyla Adam, and Carli Ryles; 10 great-grandchildren and two due this year. &nbsp;

Howard Ernest Reed (Uncle Howie), 74, of Belleville, Kansas passed away on March 6th, 2022, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Howard Ernest Reed was born to Howard and Ina May (Fraley) Reed of Belleville on October 2, 1947, in Hebron, Nebraska.

He began his education at Spring Hill country school and later moved to the Belleville school system.

After high school, in 1967 he attended the North Central Kansas Vocational School in Beloit, Kansas. While studying agriculture, he also enlisted in the Army National Guard. His unit was moved to Ft. Carson, Colorado.

 In 1968, he married his sweetheart, Beth A. Erickson, of Scandia, Kansas on September 1st and lived in Colorado Springs until he was deployed in March of 1969 to Vietnam and served there until September of that year.

After returning from Vietnam, he farmed with his father, uncle and cousins for several years. Howard then purchased three trucks and opened his own trucking business. He became an over-the-road owner-operator, and in 1989 he was named the Number 1 Owner-Operator of the Year while working for Smithway Motor Xpress, Inc. &nbsp;

For family reasons, he ventured home to help manage the Kravmore 81 Truck Stop, which was owned by his parents.&nbsp; In 1993, he &nbsp;began working as a driver/salesman for C. A. Picard in Belleville, which was later named Haarslev International. He retired from Haarslev in 2021. Shortly thereafter he bought a carwash in Belleville, naming it Howie’s Car Wash.

Howard was an avid horseshoe pitcher for many years, winning numerous trophies and tournaments.&nbsp; He served as vice-president, then president of the Kansas Horseshoe Pitchers Association.&nbsp; He, along with others, started the Republic County Ringer Horseshoe Club in Belleville. In 2020, he became a member of the North Central Kansas Pool League, serving as vice-president and actively promoting the sport.&nbsp; He participated in both sports with enthusiasm and passion.

Howard cared passionately about keeping the family together and would hold an annual weiner roast for family and friends.&nbsp; He also loved flowers and spent many hours working outdoors to keep the home place looking beautiful.&nbsp;

Howard is a life time resident of Republic County and a member of the United Methodist Church in Chester, Nebraska.

He was predeceased by his parents Howard and Ina May Reed.

Howard is survived by his wife Beth of Belleville; daughter Amy Upshaw (Lentz) of Manhattan; son Howard G. Reed II (Traci) of Belleville; and daughter Jami Miller (Justin) of Salina, and Daniel Morley (Dawn) of Belleville; sisters Lorlei Lindblad (Lindy) of Beloit; Ramona Earley (Marvin) of Sun City, Arizona; Nancy Ray of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Jane Jeardoe of Belleville.

Grandchildren Hannah, Joshua, Josiah, Isaiah, and Elijah Upshaw of Manhattan; Howard “Junior” Reed of Lincoln, Nebraska; Harlen Reed of Beloit; Keyona Reed of Concordia; Laura Miller of Salina; Drew Morley of Belleville; Logan Dahl of Belleville; Cody Deneault (Tabitha) of Belleville; Brad and Darci (Morley) Deneault of Marysville, and Isaiah Deneault (Patience) of Scandia.

Sharon Elaine Bartel, 76, of Mcpherson, Kansas, passed away at 9:10 p.m., Friday, March 4th, 2022 at Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas. Sharon was born in Newton, Kansas on February 15, 1946, a daughter of Edna Marie (Ensz) and Henry William Goossen. Sharon attended and graduated Hillsboro High School in 1964. She then attended and graduated from Bethel College, North Newton, Kansas in 1968. She was a member of First Mennonite Church in McPherson. Sharon was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. Through the years Sharon worked as a teacher for the McPherson Public School System until she retired in 2008. Sharon enjoyed reading, puzzles, knitting and crocheting, family vacations and family get togethers and spending time with her friends. Sharon E. Goossen was united in marriage to Robert D. Sharon was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. Timothy A. “Tim” Hall, 44, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on Monday, March 7, 2022, after a heroic and hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born February 25, 1978, in Fort Scott, KS to Ronny L. and Carol (DeCoudres) Hall. 

Tim married Cara Dean on July 25, 2006, in Las Vegas, NV. Together, the couple raised four children.

Tim loved spending time with friends and family, especially his grandkids who were the light of his life. They shared a special bond and always loved to be with their Papa. He was a loyal friend who would drop what he was doing to help anyone in need.

Tim was full of life and enjoyed spending time outdoors – riding ATVs, hunting, fishing, and was always up for a good game of poker or seven and a half. He will be missed dearly by all those who knew him.

&nbsp;Tim is survived by his wife Cara of Ellsworth; children Whitney DePoy (Gary) of Kanopolis, KS, Alex DePoy of Manhattan, KS, Tyson Hall of Kanopolis, and Dylan Lamb (Savanah) of Junction City, KS; grandchildren Jayden, Ali, Paxton, Nolan, and Carter; parents Ronny and Carol Hall of Ellsworth; siblings Daryl Hall of Larned, KS, Mike Hall (Gina) of Osborne, KS, Christie Hay (Jason) of Ellsworth, and Jeff Hall (Melissa) of Ellsworth; brother and sisters-in-law Jamy Hurren (Michelle) of Salina, KS, Jodi Porter (Dusty) of Rossville, KS, Holly Osborne (Moses) of Derby, KS, and Lacy Porter of Eudora, KS; father-in-law Jerry Dean (Judy) and mother-in-law Marcia Linton all of Glen Elder, KS; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Vicki was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth County where she worked many years at Cashco, Inc. She was a member of the Kanopolis United Methodist Church and past member of the church’s women’s group as well as many other groups in the Kanopolis area. She was also a municipal judge for the city of Kanopolis for many years.

Vicki is survived by her son Luther French Cowan III of Maricopa, AZ; daughter Lisa Schultz (Barry) of Kanopolis; daughter Tasha Wilkerson of St. Petersburg, FL; son Justin Wacker (Season) of Geneseo; grandchildren Cody Schultz, Cyleigh Unruh (Calvin), Kate, Bergin, Justine, and Remington Wacker, and Archer Wilkerson; and sisters Karen Shriner of Ellsworth and Myrna Pool of Spring, TX. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gary Wacker; grandson Preston Cowan; brothers Elmer “Butch” and Larry Hulse; and sister Sara Lynn Bechard.

He graduated from Green Rural High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy.&nbsp; Duane served during WWII aboard the USS Iowa battleship.&nbsp; 

He married Bonnie Oard on July 28, 1949.&nbsp; 

Duane farmed before making his home in Clay Center.&nbsp; He worked for Northern Natural Gas, and he owned and operated the Slingsby Insurance and Real Estate Agency.&nbsp; 

Duane was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clay Center and the V.F.W in Green.&nbsp; 

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn (Slingsby) Shafer and Twila (Slingsby) White-Shivers. 

Duane enjoyed life to its fullest traveling, playing golf, boating, camping, rock hunting, and fishing. &nbsp; He enjoyed every moment of life alongside his family and many friends.

Duane is survived by his wife Bonnie Slingsby of Clay Center; daughter Deborah and husband David Abner of Manhattan; sons Walter Slingsby and the late Carol Slingsby and Michael and wife Lori Slingsby both of Clay Center; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Etta Mae Garten, 98, of Abilene passed away Tuesday March 8, 2022 at Village Manor Nursing Home. She was born December 8, 1923, the daughter of William and Rose (Houlton) Higer.

 On May 12, 1940 she was united in marriage to Joseph Garten. He preceded her in death October 28, 1975.

Etta Mae is survived by her daughter Rosetta (Creach) Grayson and one son, Lonnie (Rosalie) Garten; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph, one great-grandson, Cory Booms and a sister, Bess“Rusty” Allen. 

Funeral services for Etta Mae will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Danner Funeral Home in Abilene. Burial will follow at Abilene City Cemetery. Family will receive friends Friday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Danner Funeral Home. 

The family suggests memorials be given to the Hospice of Dickinson County. Memorials may be dropped off or mailed to Danner Funeral Home, 501 N. Buckeye, Abilene, Kansas 67410.
