Fern L. Reimer, 94, passed away on October 11, 2022 at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. She was born March 1, 1928 in Halstead, KS, the daughter of Peter M. and Justina R. (Dick) Esau. Fern was a 1946 graduate of Hutchinson High School.

She was a homemaker and an active member of Buhler MB Church and Buhler EHU. 

She enjoyed music, whether it was playing the piano, singing in the church choir or playing the string bass in high school. Her favorite pastimes were playing table games, bowling, watching game shows and sports on TV, and keeping a daily diary. 

Fern helped Marvin in the family business and also did part-time work and volunteering. Family was very important to her.

Fern was united in marriage to Marvin L. Reimer on October 29, 1946 at Buhler. Survivors include children Bruce (Kathy) Reimer of Shakopee, MN and Jane (Mark) Jost of Henderson, NE; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and brothers Ron (Connie) Esau of Santa Cruz, CA, and Frank (Monica) Esau of San Jose, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, October 16, 2022 at Buhler Mortuary. Graveside Service will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 17, 2022 at Buhler Municipal Cemetery. The graveside service will be livestreamed through the Buhler MB Facebook page. Callie attended country school in Aurora, Kansas while growing up.

On March 18, 1953 she married David Motes in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; To this union four children were born, Paul, Jerry, Donna, and Sharon.

She worked as homemaker taking care of her family.

Callie was a member of American Legion Women’s Aux., and First Christian Church in Logan, Kansas.

She enjoyed playing bingo and going to her church, but most of all spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Callie is survived by her daughter Donna Knight, Concordia, KS; daughter Sharon Baker, Mesa, AZ; son Paul (Roberta) Motes, Minden, NE; six grandchildren, David (Nikkie) Leanna of Agra, KS, Justin Stanford of Omaha, NE, and Brandon (Megan) Stanford of Colorado Springs, CO; Marshall (Grace) Motes, Colorado Springs, CO; Natalie (Justin) Peck, Clarksville, TN; Daniel (Joan) Hare, Mesa, AZ; 15 great-grandchildren, &nbsp;Callum, Bethany, Austin, Jocelyn, Sutton, Cale, Kennadi, Gavin, Phoenix, Logan, Chloe, Jamison, David, Jonathan, and Emilie; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

 She was united in marriage to C. Keith Lilly on February 14, 1948. They moved from Salina to Mentor and lovingly raised their six children.

She was an amazing wife, mother, homemaker, and cook. She continued her delicious weekly Sunday dinners for her ever-expanding family until she was nearly 90 years old. She loved and doted on her 17 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

Bernice is survived by her children Sharon Chaput (Dennis) of Granger, Ind., Linda Lilly (daughter-in-law) of Salina, Dwight (Sue) of Mentor, Susan Johnson (Mark) of Salina, Shirley Sundgren (Don) of Salina, and Sandra Seim Johnson (Kurtis) of Salina; sisters Bernita Eberle of Glen Elder, and Berta Moss (Dan) of Salina; 17 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Keith; son David Lilly; granddaughter Mindy Reese; son-in-law Larry Seim; and siblings Robert, Betty, Roy (Dot), Bonnie Newell (Bob), and Bill Eberle.

A private family graveside service will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery, near Kipp, Kan., at a later date.

Survivors include his wife Shirley (Cline, Gans), Salina; son Jerald Robert (Iris-Rusty) of Rose Hill, Kansas; son Richard (Diane) of Waxahatchie, Texas; stepson Gary Gans of Bennington; stepdaughter Debbie Berigan of Salina; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Jerald was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Margaret (Grogg), his sister Beatrice Shepard, his son Randel and his grandson Scott.

Jerald was retired from SW Bell as lineman and manager, and Girl Scouts as property manager.

Jerald was in the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, and Scottish Rite.

Marthe Therese' Shafer, 87, Salina, passed on to her heavenly home on Tuesday October 11, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Marthe was born on May 2, 1935, in La Rochelle, France to Gottlieb and Agnes Misch. 

At the age of three, World War II swept across Europe, and shortly after the path of Marthe’s life would be forever changed. Marthe’s parents had immigrated to France from Poland in the 1920s. Her father was unfortunately a victim of the Nazi invasion into France and presumed deported to most likely the Dachau concentration camp, never to be heard from again.&nbsp; After her father was deported, Marthe’s mother suffered an unknown illness causing her to be bedridden, and she lived out the remainder of her short life in a nursing home. Marthe and her two older sisters were taken in by a local orphanage, ran by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

Marthe loved to talk about her life in France. As her short-term memory faded in the last few years, her memories of her childhood and France were more vivid than ever. In 1940, the Germans invaded her small, picturesque port town of La Rochelle, which was also the very last town liberated in France at the end of the war in 1945. She would recount the memory of hearing the Nazi soldiers marching and the sound their boots made hitting the ground. They had little food as the German army took every bit of sustenance they could, leaving the residents to starve. She was most afraid of the dark and being left alone. She recalled being terrified as a small child when the sirens would blare with incoming air raids. The orphans were taken to shelter in the darkness of the cellar until the sirens would subside. When the fighting became too severe to remain there, the orphanage was moved about 60 miles into France, which she recalled as being a welcome change. There she discovered her love for nature and having fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden they grew. Within a week of leaving La Rochelle, the orphanage she was living in was bombed, and when they returned at the end of the war, it was a pile of rubble. She also recounted narrowly escaping certain death when the Nazi’s came to her orphanage to take away all the children of Polish and Jewish heritage. The nuns changed her paperwork disguising her name, and she hid in the cellar with her two sisters until they left.

At the age of 16, she graduated from the orphanage with the clothes on her back, and a small amount of money in her hand. She spent many of those first nights scared and alone, sleeping on benches at the park or local train station. She eventually found her first job as a live-in nanny and housekeeper, giving her a roof over her head, a warm bed, and plenty of food.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Marthe met and went on to marry her first husband, James, an American soldier stationed in her town, and together they had nine children. At the age of 22, she set out on her first big adventure to travel across the ocean aboard the Queen Mary, to start a new life in America. Her name can be found among the tens of millions of immigrants at Ellis Island today.

She knew little English as she settled into her new home, and she loved to tell everyone that she learned to speak English from watching “I Love Lucy” on television. She lived on numerous military bases around the world, including Germany, France, Alabama, Virginia, Maryland, Hawaii, Washington, North Carolina, Ft. Riley, and finally Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, KS.

Her husband James, passed away after serving two tours in Vietnam, and suffering from Agent Orange complications.&nbsp; She met her second husband Dale, while working as a housekeeper at the Howard Johnson Motel, and together they had two daughters.

Marthe would say the biggest accomplishments in her life were being able to travel and see the world and becoming a mother to eleven children whom she loved with her whole heart. She lived a simple life, never having wealth, but giving generously to anyone in need including strangers, and thanking God for being by her side every moment of her life. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of 80 descendants at this time, and she will be remembered dearly by those of us who knew and loved her.

Marthe was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Agnes and Alfreda, her husband James Shafer, and her eldest son Dr. James Shafer.

She is survived by her husband Dale Barras, and her children&nbsp; Beatriz “Betty” Cory (Roger) Corpus Christi, Texas; Steve Shafer, Texas; Anthony “Tony” Shafer, Salina; Sylvia Senecal, Salina; Phillip Shafer, Kansas City; Francine Climer, Salina; Michael Shafer (Aimee), Minneapolis, KS; Robert Shafer, Missouri; Monique Herbel (Kurt), Salina; and Claudale Arterburn (Brian), Wichita.&nbsp; Marthe is also survived by 29 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 15th, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Ryan Mortuary. The service will also be streamed on Facebook Live. Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, October 14th, 2022, from 4 to 7 p.m. with family present from 5 to 7 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Joanne Marie Barton, 84, Hays, died Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Via Christi Village surrounded by family.

She was born January 1, 1938, in Hays, 
the daughter of George and Angela (Staab) Koerner.&nbsp; On July 13, 1957, she
 was united in marriage to Jerry M. Barton in Russell and they 
celebrated over 47 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on 
November 9, 2004.&nbsp; Joanne was a homemaker raising her family in Dorrance
 for many years and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in 
Dorrance.&nbsp; After moving to Hays, she attended mass at numerous churches 
often accompanied by her sister Janet.&nbsp; She loved to read, enjoyed 
cooking and baking, her brownies with walnuts being a family favorite.&nbsp; 
She was a K-State fan, enjoyed garage sales, loved chocolate and 
attending all of her children’s sporting events.&nbsp; &nbsp;Joanne was a great 
mom and as much as her children and grandchildren loved her, she loved 
them more.

Survivors include two sons: Theron 
Barton and wife Vicki of Shawnee, Jerry Barton and girlfriend Debbie 
Fabian of Russell, two daughters: JoLana Schumacher and husband Bruce of
 Lakewood, CO and Melody Giebler and husband Mike of Littleton, CO, 
three brothers: Jim Koerner and wife Arlis, Danny Koerner and 
significant other Diane, and Robert “Rocky” Koerner and wife Janet, all 
of Hays, four sisters: Carol Hustead of Hays, Judy Dreher and husband 
Don of Hays, Marlene Dyke and husband Bob of Miami, OK, and Linda 
Hammerschmidt and husband George of Victoria, two brothers-in-law: Ron 
Hamel of Plainville and Rodney Barton and wife Vera of Long Beach, CA, a
 sister-in-law: Jean Koerner of Hays, eight grandchildren: Christopher 
Giebler and fiancé Angelica, Lindsay Giebler and husband JT Mengel, Jodi
 and Jordan Elam, and Peyton, Presley, Muunjiza and Tavia Barton, two 
great grandchildren: Castiel and Catalina Giebler, and numerous nieces 
and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, husband Jerry, three brothers: Arlen, Kenny, and Melvin 
Koerner, three sisters: Mary Lou Hamel, Rosalyn “Rosie” Koerner, and

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic 
Church, Munjor with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow
 in St. Francis Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on
 Monday and from 9:00 am until 9:40 on Tuesday, all at Hays Memorial 
Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A vigil service will be at 6:30 pm on Monday at

Joanne Marie Barton

Chase Garrett Ehlers, the son of Ted and Marcia (Dunn) Ehlers, was 
born on June 12, 1996 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He passed away on October 10,
 2022 at Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 26 years, 3 months, 28 days.

Chase was baptized in the Webber United Methodist Church. 
Growing up, Chase attended many schools including Mt. View Elementary in
 Mt. View, Hawaii; North Polk Elementary School in Fort Polk, Louisiana;
 Stowers Elementary in Fort Benning, Georgia; Chapman Middle School in 
Chapman, Kansas and was a graduate of Lawrence/Nelson High School in 
Nelson, Nebraska. After graduating he attended the University of 
Nebraska for a time before enlisting in the United States Army on June 
22, 2015 earning the National Defense service medal and Army service 
Ribbon. Chase was honorably discharged on December 20, 2017 and 
continued his education at the Kansas State University where he 
presently was enrolled.

Throughout Chase’s life, he lived in the communities of Helemano,
 HI, Fort Benning, GA, Mountain View, HI, Fort Polk, LA, Chapman, KS, 
Nelson, NE, presently living in Manhattan, KS.

Chase was preceded in death by his grandparents Duane and Pat 
Ehlers. Survivors include his parents Ted and Marcia and his brother 
Nash all of Chapman, Kansas; grandparents Don and Ardythe Dunn of 
Deshler, Nebraska and Paul and Linda Hutchinson of Superior, Nebraska; 
Aunts and Uncles Melanie and Ryan Mikkelsen of Ruskin, Nebraska; Tanya 
and Brandon Lynch of Raymond, Nebraska; Michelle &amp; Greg Perkins of 
Reeds Spring, Missouri; Dawn and Larry Miller of Nelson, Nebraska; Brian
 and Sharon Soulek of Charlestown, Indiana; Devrie and Brian Hahn of 
Dallas, Texas; Ty and Michelle Ehlers of Norfolk, Virginia; John and

Chase Garrett Ehlers

John William Mattingly, of Mansfield, Texas, formerly of, Wakefield, Kansas, passed away on September 29, 2022 at the age of 74.

Memorial service to be held at a later time.

He was born on April 4, 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles Joseph Mattingly and Letha Alene Morrison. He married Brenda (Jett) Mattingly on September 20, 1969 in East St. Louis, Illinois and they were married for 53 wonderful years.

John proudly served his country for 22 years in the United States Army. Throughout his career in the military, he was an Aircraft Armament Maintenance Tech, Aviation Warrant Office Advanced, and an Aircraft Maintenance Officer Representative Tech. He received his Master Aircraft Badge, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Metal, 7 Air Medals, 5 Good Conduct Medals, Overseas Service Ribbons, Vietnam Campaign Medal, A Silver Star, Two Bronze Stars, and many more.

He received his associates degree in science and then went on to work for 18 years in Quality Control for the Federal Government. John also had a passion for being involved with the VFW, where he became a lifetime member once he retired from the military. He was also a member of the DAV and American Legion.

In his free time, he loved tinkering in his workshop, fishing and socializing.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Joseph Mattingly and Letha Alene Mattingly; brothers, Lenny, Adrian and Danny Mattingly; sister, Rita Steinkamp; grandson, Jeremiah Mendiola.

 </figure>John William Mattingly, of Mansfield, Texas, formerly of, Wakefield, Kansas, passed away on September 29, 2022 at the age of 74.Memorial service to be held at a later time.He was born on April 4, 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles Joseph Mattingly and Letha Alene Morrison. He married Brenda (Jett) Mattingly on September 20, 1969 in East St. Louis, Illinois and they were married for 53 wonderful years.John proudly served his country for 22 years in the United States Army. Throughout his career in the military, he was an Aircraft Armament Maintenance Tech, Aviation Warrant Office Advanced, and an Aircraft Maintenance Officer Representative Tech. He received his Master Aircraft Badge, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Metal, 7 Air Medals, 5 Good Conduct Medals, Overseas Service Ribbons, Vietnam Campaign Medal, A Silver Star, Two Bronze Stars, and many more.He received his associates degree in science and then went on to work for 18 years in Quality Control for the Federal Government. John also had a passion for being involved with the VFW, where he became a lifetime member once he retired from the military. He was also a member of the DAV and American Legion.In his free time, he loved tinkering in his workshop, fishing and socializing.John is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Joseph Mattingly and Letha Alene Mattingly; brothers, Lenny, Adrian and Danny Mattingly; sister, Rita Steinkamp; grandson, Jeremiah Mendiola.He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda M. Roger Hamilton Brent, formerly of Salina, KS, passed away peacefully 
on the morning of October 9, 2022, at Hawthorn Court of Ahwatukee in 
Phoenix, AZ, at the age of 81.

Roger was born on 
February 4, 1941, in St. Clair, MO to Vern and Esther (Hamilton) Brent. 
Roger was married to Theodora A. “Teddi” Boudrie for 41 years and 
together they raised two 2 children: Dana and Monte.

Roger
 grew up in Alton, KS and graduated from Alton High School in 1959. He 
attended Kansas State University, University of Iowa, and graduated from
 The Dallas Institute of Mortuary Sciences in 1964.

Roger
 dedicated his professional career to helping others through the loss of
 loved ones and his empathetic nature and compassion shined through 
daily. This dedication permitted him to purchase Geisendorf-Rush Smith 
Funeral Home in Salina, KS which he would retire from in 1997.

Roger
 was very active in the community throughout his life including being a 
member of the Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church in Salina, the Acacia 
Fraternity, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Salina Wildcat 
Club, Shriners, and the Kansas Funeral Directors Association.

Roger
 was a committed fan of Kansas State University and was a football 
season ticket holder for more than 40 years. He loved spending time with
 his kids and grandkids, attending their activities, and extended family
 get togethers.

Roger is survived by his children, Dana
 K. (Chris) Gillum of Mesquite, NV and Monte J. (Amy) Brent of Phoenix, 
AZ; brother, Wayne (Barbara) Brent of Ballwin, MO; and 5 grandchildren. 
Dana and Chris have three boys: Caulin, Corbin, and Connor. Monte and 
Amy have two daughters: Jaslyn and Jensen.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Esther Brent; and sister, Betty Lou Brent.

Roger
 was a good-hearted man who worked hard, enjoyed life, and cherished his
 family and friends. Although our hearts are weighing heavy, we can 
smile because he lived well and left us with many cherished memories 
that will fill our hearts and he will forever be remembered in love.

 Funeral Service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022, at 10:00 AM, 
at Episcopal Christ Cathedral Church in Salina, KS. Visitation will be

Phyllis Lorraine (Spargur) Crawford, 89, of Belleville, Kansas, went to her heavenly home on Saturday morning, October 8, 2022, at the Belleville Health Care Center.

Phyllis was born on February 7, 1933 in Wellington, KS, but grew up in Belle Plaine, KS.

Her parents were Hazel (Sturgis) Spargur and Jack (Charles Howard) Spargur. She was the oldest of five children. 

Phyllis was active in sports, a cheerleader, a straight A student, working through high school at the local drug store, and an avid reader.&nbsp; As a child, she would crawl up in a tree with an apple and a book and read for hours. 

She graduated from Belle Plaine High School in May 1951. When she was an 8th grader she met her future husband, Curtis Crawford;&nbsp; she just didn't know it yet, but he did! She and Curtis didn't have their first date until she was out of school and she was working for Boeing.

Theirs was a true love story! They married on May 24, 1952 in Champagne-Urbanna, IL, while Curtis was serving in the Air Force. She worked while he served, everything from an elevator operator to a secretary for an Air Force officer. 

To their union they had four children. Their oldest, Pam, was born in Spokane, WA, while they were stationed there. In 1955 they moved back to Wichita, KS, and they added three more children, Jana, Julie, and John. 

She was a full-time homemaker, Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and PTA officer. Her love of reading never died, but she no longer climbed a tree to do it!&nbsp; Sunday dinners were a tradition enjoyed by the whole family. Phyllis was a phenomenal cook, her meatloaf and roast beef dinners were favorites, along with her pies.&nbsp; She was a seamstress and like her mom before her, could whip up an outfit or alter a dress two hours before her daughter's Sweetheart Dance!&nbsp;

The family moved to Belleville in the summer of 1970 after a year in Manhattan, Kansas. 

Shortly after that she began working at Republic County Hospital in the medical records department. She took correspondence courses to earn her certificate in medical records and procedures, becoming the director of that department.&nbsp; She worked for the hospital for 29 years.&nbsp;

She was able to travel to many places with Curtis, even taking an African safari.

 After Curtis passed away in 2018, much of her enthusiasm went with him. But the grandchildren and great-grands and great-great-grands brought the sparkle back. She even sponsored many children over the years through Child Fund. Phyllis was the quiet strength behind her family, always loving, encouraging, and supporting them.

Phyllis was a 51-year member of the Central Christian Church of Belleville.

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, her husband Curtis, Jr., her son John Curtis, a grandson, Jacob Weatherhead, two brothers, Jack and Eldon Spargur, and a sister, Carol Cushman.

She is survived by her three daughters, Pam (Brad) Chatfield, Jana (Ronnie) Blad, and Julie (Curt) Weatherhead; ten grandchildren, Matthew (Lisa) Blad, Sarah (John) Racine, Sam (Christy) Blad, John Ketchum, Katie Ketchum, Alexis (Kevin) Wheat, Sophia (Brian) Hardwick, Samantha (Tyler) Jensen, J.C. ( Naomi) Crawford, and Cesilee (Logan) Copple; 26 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Phyllis is also&nbsp;survived by one sister, Lillian (Bob) Ray, sister-in-law Pat Spargur, and brother -in-law Ronnie Cushman, and&nbsp;many nieces and nephews

Memorial services will be Saturday, October 15th, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., at the Central Christian Church in Belleville, with Pastor Jacob Rice officiating. Burial will follow at the Belleville City Cemetery.

Robert Alfred Deterding was born February 29, 1940, in Hebron, Nebraska, to Richard and Ella (Loontjer) Deterding.&nbsp; He died October 8, 2022, at the age of 82.

Bob, as he was known to all, grew up on the family farm located between Deshler and Hebron, Nebraska.&nbsp; He attended school in Deshler and graduated from Deshler High School in 1958.

Bob was united in marriage to Judith Ann Philippi of Bruning, Nebraska, on February 14, 1960.&nbsp; They made their home in Geneva, Nebraska, until 1970 when the family moved to Belleville.&nbsp; Bob and Judy were parents to a daughter and four sons.&nbsp;

Over the years, armed with an incredible work ethic, Bob worked in heavy construction, livestock feed sales and completed his professional career retiring from The Belleville Telescope where he worked with the Farmer Stockman publication.

Bob’s hobby was woodworking.&nbsp; Following his retirement, Bob liked building furniture, remodeling homes and doing miscellaneous projects for others.&nbsp; Bob also enjoyed traveling in his RV and took many trips as the opportunities arose.

He was preceded in death by his wife Judy, of 58 years; his parents Richard and Ella (Loontjer) Deterding, and his brother and sister-in-law Leonard and Shirley Deterding.

Survivors include his children Bruce (Julie) Deterding of Wichita, Kansas; Lori Greene of Wichita, Kansas; Mark (Tammy) Deterding of Hays, Kansas; Todd (Christine) Deterding of Lindsborg, Kansas; Brian (Melanie) Deterding of Greensburg, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his second love, Kathy Johnson.

My sweet and loving Daddy gained his wings and was reunited with the absolute love of his life. Melvin R. Neufeld joined his beautiful wife, Barbara J. After all, Daddy didn’t meet a stranger! He was especially fond of Lenny, Frank and BJ. They were the 4 Musketeers! When we spoke on the phone, I’d love his stories about their shenanigans together. Ms. Liz Green was near and dear to Dad’s heart, too. He was always so grateful for his friendship with her and felt blessed to be treated so well by her family.

I was unapologetic about being a Daddy’s girl. He would tell anyone who’d listen that every man should be blessed with a baby girl. Growing up, if he was leaving the house, I went with him!

My childhood was idyllic. Both Mom and Dad made holidays, special occasions and even boring every day life memorable. We all loved Disney World and vacationed there countless times. Dad often said he wished he’d kept track of our trips to see the Mouse where being a kid was embraced.

My love of photography and capturing “moments” came directly from Dad. There was nothing better than our family nights going through the slides projected onto the screen from pictures that Dad had taken of us. Oh, the stories and memories I have!

Sadly, his health deteriorated in the last month of his Life. He was found unresponsive at the Devonshire on September 18th, and was hospitalized. Ultimately, he went to the ICU intubated with a central line. He’d suffered a mild stroke and had lost mobility on his right side. He rallied, though, in true fashion. I will forever be grateful for the time that I spent with him in September.

He passed away shortly after being discharged and transferred to rehab. He had disclosed to me while spending time together in the hospital that he was ready to go. I wasn’t ready to hear that, but I know he just wanted to see Mom.

Per his wish, I laid him peacefully to rest yesterday, October 10th, at 9 a.m. in the Hoffnungsau Cemetery. 

In addition to Mom, Daddy has joined his parents, John and Elizabeth Neufeld (my dear Granny and Grandpy), as well as his beloved Uncle Pete Schroeder.

Yesterday was a Chamber of Commerce weather day. He would have said it was “wonderful!” His favorite hymns were played. My best friend, Jessica, was there to make saying my final Earthly farewell bearable. Daddy always commented how grateful he was that I have such dear friends who have become my family. I got that quality of making lasting relationships from him.

Jim was born on September 16, 1945, in Newton, KS, the son of Strozier Albin and Lavina May (Dillon) Hulsey.&nbsp; 

He graduated from Galva High School in 1963.&nbsp; 

On March 9, 1966, Jim was united in&nbsp; marriage to Penny Lin Helgeson in Galva, KS.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on February 10, 2016.&nbsp;

Survivors include: two daughters, Sonya Allen (Scott) of Lawrence, KS and Patti Javener (Andy) of Topeka, KS; a brother, Tommy Hulsey (Pam) of McPherson, KS; five grandchildren, Danielle Cowan (Kim), Abbi Hess, Darian Hess, Avery Allen, and Katie Allen; one great-granddaughter, Ava Rose Hess; sisters-in-law Sandra Blair (Bill) of Galva, KS, Anita Walters (Steve) of Galva, KS, and Debbie Hulsey of McPherson, KS; brother-in-law Brian Helgeson (Gina) of Canton, KS; and many extended family and friends.

 Mildred spent her childhood in the Riley area.&nbsp; She graduated from Riley High School in 1943.&nbsp; 

Mildred worked on the family farm as well as helped take care of other family and children. She spent a small amount of time as a young woman working at the elevator.

 Mildred married Harold Fehlman on August 24, 1950. They made their home on Harold’s family homestead in Wakefield, where they stayed their entire marriage. 

Mildred was a member of the Wakefield United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, EHU, and the Priscilla Club.&nbsp; She spent many years as a 4-H and Project Leader. Her family received the Kansas 4-H Family of the Year award in 1984. Mildred was an avid quilter and enjoyed sewing and knitting.
