Former Phillips County resident James M. Smith passed away at his 
home in Littleton, Colorado, on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at the age of
 74.

He was born June 14, 1948, in Holdrege, NE the son of Wayne and Luella
 (Russell) Smith. &nbsp;He was a Phillipsburg High School graduate and served
 in the United States Army.

James is survived by his two sons: Jamie Smith of Salina, Kansas and 
Chris Woerpel of Thornton, CO; brother Russell Smith of Phillipsburg; 
sisters: Marlene Peters and husband Forrest of Phillipsburg, Jeanne 
Gantz of Beloit, Mary Lasiter and husband Jim of Blairsburg, IA, and 
Linda Schurz of Phillipsburg; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and 
numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation is planned.&nbsp; A memorial service will be at a later date.

Larry F. Smith, 84, died October 5, 2022, in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; He was born on June 27, 1938, at Fort Riley, the son of Francis and Edna (Rand) Smith.&nbsp; 

Larry was a graduate with honors from Agenda High School in Agenda, KS.&nbsp; 

He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Lovendahl, in July 1956.&nbsp; 

In November 1956, Larry joined the Air Force and served for 20 years, retiring in 1977 as a Senior Master Sergeant.&nbsp; He was awarded four air medals and was named Airman of the Year twice.&nbsp; He received the Meritorious Service Medal for heroism, saving men from a burning jet.&nbsp; Larry was also received the Oak Leaf Cluster from the 4080th Strategic Air Wing.&nbsp;

 While in the Air Force, he received a bachelor of science degree in psychology from the University of Alaska and a master of science degree while in Evanston, Il.&nbsp; 

After retiring from the Air Force, Larry worked for AT&amp;T for 15 years writing training manuals.&nbsp; 

He is preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Compton, his parents and a sister.

Vivian Lee (Lomax) Humphrey was born on May 17, 1943 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas, the daughter of John S. Lomax and Donna L. (Wideman) Lomax.

 She died Saturday, October 1, 2022 at the Mitchell County Hospital at the age of 79.

In July, 1964, she was united in marriage with Larry Humphrey. Three sons, Jeff, Greg, and Rick were born to this union.

Vivian worked over 40 years for Fred Jones Manufacturing in Oklahoma City. She loved her many small dogs she had over the years.

She was so proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved the Waconda Lake and found it to be a place she could go and relax.

Vivian was a quiet person and a good listener, and will be missed by so many who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Jeff.

Left to mourn her passing are her sons Greg and wife Janell, and Rick; her sister Georgia Gwen Putman; brother Billie Hugh Lomax and wife Karen; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five nieces; three nephews; and a host of other family and friends.

She has been cremated and she had wished to be buried next to her parents in Prairie Grove Cemetery north of Cawker City. 

Family and friends are invited to a graveside service at Prairie Grove Cemetery at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2022.

Jon's life began on January 20, 1967, in Dallas, Oregon. He is the son of Orley and Karen (Garrison)Friesen. 

Jon is a graduate of Hillsboro High School. 

He was united in marriage to Dawn Jenkins on September 7, 1999, in Salina. 

Jon was employed at Pizza Hut in Herington for many years and loved his job. 

He truly never met a stranger. Jon had a heart of gold and helped wherever he could. He had many routines, starting every morning with his coffee and bible. If Jon had your phone number, you were likely to get a text every morning and evening, and on Saturdays he would always call his dad and his sister Kim. Spending time with his wife, watching football, K-State being his favorite, game shows, and playing with his nephews were some of his favorite things to do. 

Most importantly, Jon loved Jesus and would often ask questions about scriptures he didn't understand. 

He participated in many different Special Olympic events, basketball being his favorite. 

He took pride in wearing his cowboys boots, hat and looking sharp.

 Jon is survived by his wife Dawn Friesen of Herington, father Orley Friesen of Oregon, mother-in-law Susan Buchwald of Herington, father-in-law Tom (Jean) Jenkins of New Mexico, sister Kimberly (Scott) Simms of Oregon, sister-in-law Kristi (Kurt) Michaelson of Oklahoma, nieces and nephews Crystal Beynon, Becky Connolly, Kaleb Michaelson, and Kyle Michaelson and four great-nieces and nephews. 

Jon passed away at his home on Thursday, September 29, 2022. 

He is preceded in death by his mother, two brothers and a sister. 

His family will gather with friends on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at the Faith Covenant Fellowship, Herington at 11 a.m. for his memorial service.

Brad’s life began on September 23, 1954, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Marion. He is the son of Gilbert and Phyllis (Allen) Turk.

 Brad is 1973 graduate of Marion High School, and he served his country in the United States Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S South Carolina, where he was the captain’s personal barber. &nbsp;Brad was an original plank owner of the U.S.S South Carolina. 

In 1979, he was united in marriage to Peggy Lurz. They had Christian, Jeffery, Theodore, and later was united in marriage to Luretta Hewitt on October 22, 1999, gaining Johnie, Kacey. 

Brad was employed by Cessna (Textran) Aircraft as a skin finisher and was a welding instructor for Flint Hills Tech. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, remodeling his home, working in the yard, and welding projects, including log splitters, many dollies, trailers and even a cherry picker.

Brad most especially enjoyed being a Papa to &nbsp;his grandchildren. 

Brad is survived by his wife Luretta of Marion, his mother Phyllis (Jess) Erickson of Pilsen; children Jeffery Turk of Marion, Ted (Samantha) Turk of Marion, Christina Eveland of Wichita, Johnie ( Angela) Evans of Topeka, and Kacey (Dustin) Burson of Wichita; grandchildren Melvin, Brandon, Christian, Easton, Jaxton, Archie, Dalton, Bailey, Brye, Lexus , Abby and Dakota Shae; siblings Gary (Donita) of Baldwin, Tony of St. Louis, Bill (Wendy) of Sedgwick, and Shane of Kansas City.&nbsp;

Brad passed away at his home on Sunday October 2, 2022. 

He is preceded in death by his father Gilbert andsister Teresa. 

Brad’s family will gather with friends on Wednesday, October 5th from 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. at Yazel Megli Funeral Home. His Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 6th&nbsp;at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Parish, Marion. 

Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to Good Shepherd Hospice.

SALINA –&nbsp;John R. Gilpin, 82, passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2022.&nbsp; He was born in Hutchinson to Samuel and Dorothy (Wackler) Gilpin.

Johnny owned and operated COP, Central Office Products, in Salina for many years and was in sales his entire life.

He was a dedicated member of the Salina Isis Shriners and their Recorder for 15 years.&nbsp; He was also involved with the Shriners Hospital and prided himself on the extensive work he did helping children get the medical treatment they needed.

Johnny never met a stranger and loved to spend time with his family and friends.&nbsp; He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Alli Baskerville.

Johnny is survived by his wife Gladys Gilpin; sons Randy Gilpin (Lisa), Rick Gilpin (Holly); grandchildren Abbi Bohlmann (Richard), Chelsea Gipson, Macy Graves (Aaron), Megan Gilpin; great-grandchildren, Austin, Sydni, Madison; great-grandchild Porter; and siblings Larry Gilpin (Linda), Gary Gilpin (Cathy), Marilyn Maes (Jim).

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Ryan Mortuary.&nbsp; Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 7th at First Lutheran Church, Dorrance, KS.&nbsp; Burial will follow in Dorrance Cemetery.

With deepest sorrow, we announce that&nbsp;Cole Darran Rodenbeek, age 39, our beloved father, son, brother, fiance, family member and friend passed away on Saturday, October 1st, 2022 in a car accident.&nbsp; 

Cole made his grand entrance into the world on December 25th, 1982.&nbsp; He was known to say that he wanted to make sure everyone remembered his birthday.

Cole grew up in Salina, but spent time living in Reno, NV and Denver, CO amassing friends from across the country.&nbsp; 

In 2010, he married Kyrsten (Beckmann) and they had two beautiful children, Payge and Marley, who were and are the lights of their lives. &nbsp;

You can't explain Cole, you have to experience Cole." This quote, by one of his friends, perfectly sums up the man. He lived and loved large. 

In 2020, he and fiance Meredith Frazier moved to Lawrence and bought a home in the country.&nbsp; They quickly turned that home into a farm fully stocked with goats, chickens, dogs, cats, children, and lots of love and laughter.&nbsp; There was always a friend or two, or twenty, stopping by, and Cole welcomed them all. His most enduring gift was his ability to spin a yarn.&nbsp; He could stretch an ordinary tale into a two hour narrative full of truths, but mostly half truths. Cole loved to wow people and make them laugh. What Cole loved most of all was to be surrounded by his children. His proudest moments involved Payge and Marley.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Cole is predeceased by grandparents William and Evelyn Cole of Salina; Betty Rodenbeek of Salina;&nbsp; great-grandparents Nathan and Dorothy Butcher of Salina; and Edward and Ruby Rodenbeek of Scott City.

Cole will be missed everyday by his fiancée, Meredith Frazier and her two children, Jack and Kincaid of the home; his son, Payge Rodenbeek, of Bennington; his daughter, Marley Rodenbeek, of Bennington;  his mother, Barbara Nitz and stepfather, Rod, of Lawrence; fathers, Michael Rodenbeek, of Salina, Paul Lowe and wife Terry, of Reno, NV; grandfather, Jim Rodenbeek, of Scott City; brothers, Noah Rodenbeek and wife Renee, of Lawrence, Benton Bates and wife Amanda, of Denver; sister, Alexandria Keith and husband Troy, of Lawrence; sister, Caitlin Sidener, of Mission, KS; brother, Max Lowe, of Reno, NV; sister, Marina Lowe, of Seattle, WA; sister, Chloe Vaugirard and husband Loic, of Miami, FL; sister, Lilly Bristow of Brookville; step brothers, Karl Nitz and wife Stacy, of Frisco, TX, and Ryan Nitz and wife Alicia, of Falmouth, Maine.

Cole loved and was loved by his many nieces and nephews.

Steve "Burger" Schmidt, 77, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at his home in Salina, KS surrounded by family and friends.&nbsp; 

Steve was born November 12, 1944, the oldest son of AR and Viona Schmidt and grew up on the Schmidt family farm outside of Woodbine, KS with his younger brother, Tracy.&nbsp; 

He graduated from Dickinson County Community High School in 1963 then joined the U.S. Navy.&nbsp; 

While stationed in San Diego, CA, he met the younger sister of his Navy buddy (I didn’t think you were supposed to date your friend's sisters but…) and eventually brought her back to Kansas.&nbsp; In July of 1968 he married Janeece M. Patch of Colman, SD and moved to Salina, KS where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement in 2007.

He is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife Janeece, two children, Monica Craig (m. Charles Craig), and Gordon Schmidt (m Dr. Cari Ahlers Schmidt), two grandchildren, Sam and Wyatt Schmidt, and his brother Tracy Schmidt (m. Katherine Schmidt).

Steve served proudly as a rifleman with the Salina VFW Honor Guard and was a stranger to none.&nbsp; He had a boisterous personality and will be remembered by all who knew him as a man with a generous heart and a willing hand, always ready to stand around at the bar. &nbsp;

Celebration of Life will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2022 at Ryan Mortuary.&nbsp; Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m.&nbsp; Military honors will be provided by the VFW Post #1432. &nbsp;

Lois Ann (Johnson) Long&nbsp;of Salina passed away Saturday, September 24th at Salina Regional Health Center. Lois was born at the McPherson Hospital on April 2, 1940 to Lester and Arlene (Lindquist) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg.

Lois attended grade school at North Diamond, a one-room school house near Galva and Lindsborg Rural High School. 

She worked for Southwestern Bell in Salina and Kansas City for most of her career. She was shifted to AT&amp;T when the two communication companies merged. 

Lois loved to travel and eventually started her own business, Ann’s Travel and Cruises, and assisted many people in making arrangements for their cruises and travels.

 Lois was a member of Holy Sheppard Lutheran Church while living in Gladstone, Missouri. She shared her singing talent with their choir. Lois was also active in their Homeowners Association and phone company charity events.

Lois married William Long in Gladstone, MO in June of 1982. They enjoyed cruising, mostly in the Caribbean, but especially through the Panama Canal and Alaska. They also wereNASCAR fans and attended races across the country.

Lois loved, enjoyed, and was very generous with her nephews and nieces, Sieg and Sven Johnson and Jennifer, Stacy, and Tim Lindshield.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents Lester and Arlene Johnson and her husband William Long.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Richard and Ann Johnson and sister and brother-in-law Lori and Daniel McKinney plus her nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors, and caretakers.

A graveside service is planned for Sunday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, Lindsborg, KS with Pastor Chris Deines officiating.

Harold W Hanson, 82, of Scandia, died peacefully on September 28, 2022 of natural causes in Wichita, KS. Harold was born November 15, 1939, in Leland, IA, to Velma (Gavin) &amp; Orville Hanson. 

He graduated from Tracy (CA) High School and soon entered the Air Force (61-63').

Harold was an outside sales representative and business owner most of his life. 

He belonged to the Clonmel-Schulte Knights of Columbus Council 3114 for over forty five years and a proud member of the Scandia American Legion Post 193.

He enjoyed playing softball and golf with many close friends throughout his life.&nbsp;His laughter was infectious and upon meeting Harold, he was soon your friend.

Harold is survived by his life partner Carolyn Cornett (Belleville, KS), son Greg (Merresa) Hanson (Newton, KS), daughters Karen (Kevin) Crabtree (Wichita, KS) and Kristy (Mike) Sandbo (Wichita. KS). Grandchildren Clinton Hanson, Justin (Jessica) Crabtree, Kylee (Geoff) Weninger, Garrett Crabtree and Kailyn, Easton and Rilynn Sandbo.&nbsp;

Harold Vance (Satch) Sales passed away Sunday, October 2, 2022 at Pine Village, Moundridge, Kansas.&nbsp;Harold was born in Peoria, Illinois on July 29, 1927, the son of the Late Marie (Burch) Sales and Hamer Vance Sales.

Harold attended the Roxbury Grade School and graduated from Roxbury High School in 1945.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, McPherson, where he served his church through the years working with the youth group and in many other capacities.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 2nd Class in WWII earning the Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Medal.

Harold worked for Westgate Greenland as a roustabout for several years before starting with the National Cooperative Refinery Association (NCRA now CHS) in August of 1953 and retired as an electrician after 36 years of service for the company.

Harold enjoyed sports, antique cars, camping and traveling with his family. But most of all, Harold loved his family and was so welcoming to new family members through life’s experiences. He loved his Saturday morning breakfasts with Brandon and Bryan and Sundays after church with his sister Carolyn and her husband, Jay. The Kansas City Royals and Chiefs were a must to watch.

Harold V. Sales was united in marriage to Lorna Marilyn Tolle on June 9, 1951, at Roxbury, Kansas. She died January 3, 2005. Harold was united in marriage to Martha Juhnke Kaufman on December 25, 2007, in McPherson. She died July 31, 2019.

He is survived by son Kevin (Brenda) Sales of McPherson; grandsons Brandon Sales, Bryan Sales, Gene Wilson (Lindsay), and Jeff (Sara) Wilson all of McPherson; great-grandchildrenKelsey Wilson of Shawnee, Kansas, Hannah Wilson, Emma Wilson, Drew Wilson and Riley Gard, all of McPherson; sister Carolyn (Jay) Herren, McPherson; stepdaughters Ginny (Paul) Sprague of McPherson and Mary (Steve) Heath of Dighton; stepgranddaughters Christy (Jeff) Tate of Madison, AL, Tracey (Joe) Pitman of Oklahoma City and Elizabeth Heath (fiance’ Derrick Kraft) of Meade, KS; stepgreat-grandchildren Logan Tate, Harlan and Hiett Pitman; and many nieces and nephews.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother Ollie May Corbitt Sales; his first wife, Marilyn Sales; second wife, Martha Kaufman; a son, Kurtis Sales; sisters Omega “Mick” Alford, Gertrude Heckard, and Janet Sales; brothers Ralph Sales and Bill Archer; and daughter-in-law Jeanene Jennings Sales.

As per his request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. 

Inurnment of cremains will be at Valley View Cemetery, Roxbury, KS. Time of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, McPherson, Kansas.

Margaret Ann Darrah Sheets, of McPherson, Kansas passed away Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Cedars House, McPherson, Kansas. Margaret, daughter of Andrew J. and Lydia (Prosser) Darrah, was born on July 27, 1929, in the McPherson Hospital and lived her entire life in McPherson, Kansas.

 She attended the McPherson public schools and McPherson College, where she obtained an Associate’s xegree in slementary sducation. She enjoyed her two years of teaching at the Groveland School and one year at Mitchell School.

She was a lifetime member of the Congregational Church.

Margaret met her husband, William J. “Bill” Sheets, in 7th grade, when they both played clarinet in the school band. From then on they were inseparable and married on August 12, 1950, in the Congregational Church, McPherson, Kansas. There were two children born of this marriage, John “Brent,” born January 31, 1952, and Mary Margaret, born March 4, 1954. 

She became a stay-at-home mom, but was also active in PTA, Congregational Sunday School, 20th Century, Progressive Literature, Domestic Art, Chapter EU of PEO, and was a life member of Hospital Auxiliary. Margaret spent several years volunteering at her children’s school as room mother, as well as Den Mother for the Scouts.

A friend asked if she and Bill would open her home for a student of the Experiment in International Living. They agreed and this experience led to an interesting lifelong friendship with a student from Thailand. Wipapan quickly became a much loved member of the family and is still keeping contact with her “American family.” They also hosted another group from Mexico.

Margaret was able to give her mother much attention while Lydia lived at the Friends Inn in downtown McPherson and later when she entered the Cedars Care Home on East Kansas. She went daily to the Cedars to give her mother help and saw the need for such a facility. This led her to become an active member on the Cedars Board where she served for a number of years.

After that, she and Bill enjoyed many traveling experiences and spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She loved her flowers and gardening, her dogs, and spending time with her friends and family. After she lost her eye sight, she loved listening to her audio books and music.

She was able to cope with several health issues, including diabetes and loss of eye sight, which later required she and Bill moving to the Cedars Assisted Living. After Bill's passing she transferred to the Cedars Health Care and she established many friendships with fellow residents while living there.

Margaret passed peacefully under the care of Kindred Hospice at Cedars Health Care, 805 N. Maxwell, McPherson, Kansas.

She is survived by her son Brent and daughter-in-law Debbie Sheets of McPherson, Kansas; her daughter Mary and son-in-law Brad Spilman of Shawnee, Kansas. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Kim Veer (Matt) Melville, SK Canada; Timothy “T.J.” Dearing (Lindsay) McPherson, KS; Tommy Dearing (Amie) Maryville, TN; Chad Spilman (Alisa) Littleton, CO; Andy Spilman (Sophia) Blanchard, OK; Allison Wade (Vince) Overland Park, KS; and fourteen great-grandchildren, Garrett and Kendall (Veer), Trace and Teague (Dearing), Jacqueline and Olivia (Dearing), Jake, Braeden, Caleb and Olivia (Spilman), Sam, Addie and Ellla (Spilman), and Lydia (Wade).

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill Sheets, and her sister Mary Jane Ashen-Brenner.

A religious service will be held on Monday, October 10, 2022 at First Christian Church (DOC) in McPherson, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating. The family asks that you please join them following the service for a meal at the church.

<a href="https://www.wigginsfuneralhomes.com/obituaries/Steven-Schriner/#!/Obituary"></a>Steven Lee Schriner, Jr., 39, of Lindsborg, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 30, 2022 at Ascension via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita due to complications of a car accident. He was born November 9, 1982 in Denver, Colorado, the son of Steven Lee Schriner, Sr, and Kathryn Elaine (Stier) Schriner. He graduated from Moundridge High School with the class of 2001. Steven later graduated from North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit. Steven worked for Rainbow Trucking Inc. as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. Steven and Anna Wagoner welcomed four children together. She survives along with their children, Sky Schriner of Lawrence, and Jayce Schriner, Baylee Schriner and Blayne Schriner of Moundridge. He is also survived by sons Easton and Emerson; mother Kathy Schriner of Grove, Oklahoma; father Steven Lee Schriner, Sr. of Marquette; brother Brandon Lee Schriner of Joplin, MO; and paternal grandmother Judy Schriner of Marquette. Steven enjoyed spending time outdoors and loved to make people smile and laugh. He was considered the life of the party! Steven lived his life to the fullest and to the extreme. Above all, he loved spending his time with his kids. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Marlin Schriner; and maternal grandparents Danny and June Stier. Family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 10, 2022 at West Zion Mennonite Church, with funeral services immediately following. Burial will take place at Langley Cemetery. Memorial donation checks may be made out to Moundridge Funeral Home to help defray funeral costs, and may be mailed to P.O. Box 410, Moundridge, KS 67107.

Mary Louise (Carpenter) Simmering, born February 20, 1929, in Davenport, Oklahoma, grew up in rural Oklahoma communities before graduating from Garber, OK High School in 1946. 

Upon graduating from Central State University in Edmond, OK, she worked at the YWCA in Oklahoma City.&nbsp;

In 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, James Virgil Simmering.&nbsp; Following his graduation from medical school, they moved to Fort Knox, Kentucky as part of the U.S. Army Medical Corps.&nbsp; Mary Lou, Virgil, and their three children then settled in Wynnewood, OK and moved to Norman, OK in 1965, where she lived until 2012.&nbsp;&nbsp;
