BROOKVILLE – Charles F. Pillar, 89, passed away Friday, September 2, 2022.&nbsp; He was born in Norwich, Connecticut to George and Anna (Kosapod) Pillar.&nbsp; 

Charles proudly served in the Air Force during the Korean War.&nbsp; Later he was a truck driver for Hess Oil Company.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife Virginia in 2007.

He is survived by a son, Chuck Pillar of New London, Connecticut; and two siblings.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Doris Lee Nothern, 79, of Salina, passed away Monday, September 19, 2022.&nbsp; She was born November 11, 1943, in Beloit to Dorothy A.&nbsp; (Burge) and Clifford L. Burks.&nbsp; 

In her younger years, her father had a crop-dusting business and she enjoyed flying the airplanes.&nbsp; Doris worked as a PBX operator for Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; She was a proud member of the Eastern Star and loved dogs, cats and horses.

She is survived by her husband David Nothern, of the home.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sister Leota Werth.

Graveside service will be private in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Jeffery Chad Vidricksen, 67, died Sept. 18, 2022. He was born November 22, 1954 to Benjamin and Lola (Nienke) Vidricksen. 

He graduated from Salina High School South in 1972. 

Jeff had a passion for Harley Davidson’s and gained so many friends through all the years of riding. He was the proud owner of V’s Hawg Trough in Salina, KS in the late 70s. 

He then started a beautiful family and was married for 40 years. 

He later retired from the Kansas Turnpike Authority in Wichita, KS.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Julia Marie Vidricksen. 

He leaves behind his children Lisa Vidricksen-DesVeaux, Raleigh, NC; Jeffery D. Vidricksen (Erika), Portland, OR; Jacey Vidricksen, Wichita, KS, and Chad Collins, Lawrence ; nine grandchildren, Ava, Nolan, Sadie, Lennon, Zalyn and Havyn, Joshua, Leah, Adriana. His siblings are Nancy Richardson, Jan (Marvin) Mattison, Benjamin (Karen) Vidricksen, Penelope Monroe; and hal- sister, Cecelia Newberry (Mike); several nieces and nephews and friends and family through EBL.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, September 23, 2022 at Emmanuel Salina, 1325 East Cloud Street. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery, New Cambria, KS. Friends may call at Ryan Mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.&nbsp;

Carolyn was born September 29, 1928, in Salina, Kansas, the oldest of three children to Edgar and Ruby Johnson of Assaria, Kansas.

     Carolyn lived in Assaria for the majority of her life.  In 1946, she graduated from Assaria High School and then attended Brown Mackie College in Salina, Kansas. 

 She worked at Lynch Grain until she married Richard H. Johnson on June 4, 1950.  She was proud of her Swedish heritage and enjoyed her role as a farmer’s wife and mother to their three children.  

     As a member of Assaria Lutheran Church, she joyfully served in many capacities, including Visitation Committee, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Mary Group, XYZ, choir, quilting, communion preparation, and serving in the kitchen.  Her other community activities included Extension Homemakers Unit and 4H. 

 She and her husband loved to spend time with their friends in Salina Twirlers Square Dance Club.  

     She was a loving caregiver to her husband until his death after 46 years of marriage.  She continued to live independently on their farm until 2016 when she moved first to Lindsborg, then to Wichita, until her death.

     Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Richard Johnson, her parents Edgar and Ruby Johnson, and her brother Eldon Johnson. 

     She is survived by her sister Doris Blomquist of Assaria, son Dale (Linda), of Carlsbad, California, and daughters Sharon (Scott) Moser of Wichita and Anita (Jeff) Wesche of Virginia Beach, Virginia, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  

     Visitation with the family will be from 6:30p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday, September 23, at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg, KS.

     Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 24, at Assaria Lutheran Church, Assaria, KS with Pastor Dean Apel officiating.  Burial will follow at Assaria Lutheran Cemetery.

Larry DeWayne Wedel, loving father and friend, passed away at age 77 on September 18, 2022. He was born to Nathan and Betty (Koehn) Wedel on January 25, 1945. 

Raised on the family farm northwest of Durham, farming was in Larry’s blood. As a child he enjoyed riding the tractor with his Grandpa Koehn and working in the fields alongside his brothers. He told stories of swimming in the stock tank, Sunday chicken dinners at Grandma Koehn’s and riding in his Uncle Vic’s flashy car.

In high school he was a proud member of the 1963 State Basketball Champion, Durham Hornets. Throughout his life he aspired to keep the “Spirit of ’63” alive and carried that strength and determination through every challenge he faced.

In 1969 Larry and then-wife Theresa purchased their own dairy farm. He enjoyed it all – feeding and milking cows, working the ground, harvesting wheat, and putting up hay. He loved having his kids and grandkids sitting beside him in the tractor. Later in life, he referred to the farm as his friend, and he never wanted to leave. He built close friendships with other farmers in the community. In recent years, he developed a knack for packing silage, and was grateful to be a part of the forage chopping crew.

In times of leisure, he enjoyed Friday nights at Salina Speedway, hot rod tractor pulls, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He had a special affection for cherry pie, the rumble of a big block Chevy, and the singing of old Mennonite hymns. His children and grandchildren remember him for his playful, easy-going manner, deep voice, big hands, unfailing generosity and tireless work ethic.

Survivors include brothers Doug (Mona) of Est Omerville, Quebec, Canada, Steve (Cindy) of Abilene, KS, Curtis (Joy) of Durham, KS, Monte of Scottsdale, AZ, and sister Mona (Dale) Koop of Abilene, KS; children Darcy (Shannon) of Great Bend, KS, Dana of Portland, OR, and Dara of Fresno, CA; grandchildren Ethan, Evan, Emily and Cy.

Memorial service will be held Monday, September 26, at Grace Community Fellowship, 613 Adams, Hillsboro, KS. Visitation with family at 10:00 a.m., followed by service at 10:30 a.m.. Lunch for friends and family will be served immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been designated to the Mennonite Central Committee Relief Fund in Larry’s name, in the care of Jost Funeral Home.

Florence "Jean" Oblander (Peters) died September 17, 2022 at Salem Home, Hillsboro, KS. She was born September 20, 1926 in Goessel, KS to George and Ruth (Schroeder) Peters.

She attended her 1st grade of school at the one-room schoolhouse, Geis School, where she was taught by her Uncle Ted Peters and quickly became "teacher's pet." She then spent her next 11 years at Durham, graduating in 1944. She attended Emporia State College, receiving her temporary teacher's certificate and taught for two years at the one-room schoolhouse, Pleasant Valley, west of Durham.

While attending school in Durham, she met the love of her life, Virgil Oblander, marrying him on Sept 1, 1946. They moved to Virgil's parents farm after his parents moved to Durham. On June 18, 1950, they welcomed their first child, Burt; followed by Wendy on Aug 4, 1952; quickly followed by Gene on Oct 11, 1953; and Kim on Nov 21, 1954.

Mom worked (hard) raising her kids. She also worked, after the kids all left home, as a cook at Shiloh Manor in Canton. As a member of the Lutheran church, she spent countless hours volunteering for whatever was asked of her, including serving as a Sunday School teacher, cooking for countless funerals and events, and taking on the president role of the Durham Trinity Lutheran LWML. 

Although she still volunteered, she retired in 1991, when she and Virgil moved to Newton. They moved back to Hillsboro to care for Jean's mom, Ruth. They resided in Hillsboro until Virgil died in 2015, after which Jean moved to an apartment in Hillsboro and kept busy making her wonderful meals which were always appreciated (and quickly devoured!) by her family. 

In August 2022, she suffered a fall and moved to Salem Home where she received wonderful care but passed away from congestive heart failure three days before her 96th birthday.

She was a wonderful mother, grandma, aunt, sister, and friend. She was an amazing cook (we are thankful to have her recipes), a beautiful and strong woman, always happy, extremely sharp, and always ready for a long conversation.

She is survived by her son Burt Oblander, Newton; daughter Wendy (Peter) Daniel, Beckenham, England; son Gene (Janine) Oblander, Greeley, CO; daughter Kim (Jonas) Frantz, Tampa; and sister Judi Dunn, Salina; grandson Chris Oblander, and granddaughters Julie Oblander (whom she shared a special bond with), April Zink, Rachel Daniel, and Sarah Daniel, and six great-grandchildren: Dalis, Haley, Harlee, Isaac, Kamin, and Jason. 

She was predeceased by her husband Virgil and her sister Georgia Medley.

Graveside service at Durham Park Cemetery 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 23, 2022 rural Durham.  Family will have a private Celebration of Life service to honor Jean's life.

Beth E. Hershberger, 65, of Hesston, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2022 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She was born February 5, 1957 in Wooster, Ohio, the daughter of Robert and Rhoda (Yoder) Hartman. She graduated from Central Christian High School in 1975 and then continued her education at Hesston College, Hesston, KS, graduating in 1977 with an A.A. degree in business.

Beth married Conrad Boettger in 1979 and two children became part of their family, Jenna Marie and Joel Conrad. She later married Kermit "Dee" Hershberger and his two sons became part of their family, Seth Alan and Chad Aaron. She was a member of the Whitestone Mennonite Church, where she played piano and accompanied for church services. Beth worked for Hesston College, Schowalter Villa, and Mennonite Central Committee, where she focused on the Commission on Overseas Missions. Beth is survived by her husband Dee Hershberger, of the home; mother Rhoda Hartman of Kidron, OH; daughter Jenna (David) Boettger-Boring of Portland, OR; son Joel Boettger (Karina Ortman) of Wichita; and stepsons Seth (Sarah) Hershberger of Newton, and Chad (Tara Shae) Hershberger of Derby; eight grandchildren, Collin, Natalie, Verona, Grady, Finnegan, Kohen, Archer, and Pennington; and two sisters, Barbara (Ralph) Reinford of Dalton, OH, and Brenda (Mark) Hartman-Sauder of Syracuse, NY.

She was preceded in death by her father Robert Hartman. Private graveside services will be held at Eastlawn Cemetery, rural Newton.

He was a retired judge and attorney.&nbsp; He worked as the county, probate, and juvenile judge for 14 years and then was a lawyer for the State of Kansas Dept. of Human Services for 17 years.

Dean was born on February 12, 1929, in McPherson, KS, the son of Floyd Harold and Mildred Irene (Tipton) Cotton.&nbsp; He graduated from McPherson High School in 1947, McPherson College in 1951 and was the class salutatorian.&nbsp; He then attended &nbsp;Washburn Law School, graduating in1954.&nbsp; 

On February 9, 1955, Dean was united in marriage to Esther Marie Ikenberry at the McPherson Church of the Brethren.

Dean was a member of First United Methodist Church, Partners Sunday School Class, United Methodist Men, Kiwanis Club, Genealogy Club, McPherson County Historical Society, and life member of McPherson Opera House.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 67 years, Esther, of the home; a son, Ken Cotton, DDS (Michelle) of McPherson, KS; a daughter, Kathy Gauby (Sid) of Boise, ID; three siblings, Jeanine Watratz of Surprise, AZ, Donald Cotton (Ivadelle) of Scott City, KS, and Carolyn Penner (Don) of North Newton, KS; four grandchildren, Kyle Gauby (Melissa), Kacie Noyes (Jeremy), Meghan Rathbun (Denver), and Matt Cotton (Jocie); six grandchildren, Owen, Henry, Evelyn, Henry David, Howard, and Amelia; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Saddle Club and helped her children when they participated in 4-H.&nbsp;

Thomas “Tom” D. Bieker, age 58, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2022 at the Cloud County Health Center, Concordia, KS.&nbsp; He was born on September 6, 1964 in Concordia, KS to Julius O. and Marie M. (Forgue) Bieker.

Tom graduated from Concordia High School in 1983.&nbsp; Tom wrestled and won several tournaments and placed 4th&nbsp;at State.&nbsp; He still holds the records for most reversals in a season (44) and career (86).&nbsp; After high school, Tom attended vo-tech school for auto body repair.&nbsp;

Tom worked for CE, Smith Trenching and later enjoyed his time volunteering for the Catholic Thrift Store. Tom loved to fish, do jigsaw puzzles and was an avid music listener, especially classic rock.&nbsp; He also enjoyed painting and collecting dragon figurines and just ‘tinkering’ on things.

Tom is survived by his companion Crystal Wilson Concordia; son Trenton Bieker, Hope, KS; brothers Lawrence (Cathy), Pittsburg, KS, Richard (Diane), James,&nbsp;Anthony (Mary), all of Concordia, KS and Dale, Benton, AR; sisters Elizabeth Deneke (Mike), Amarillo, TX, Margaret “Peggy” Colgrove (Dwight), Washington, KS &amp; Kathleen Schmidt (Russ), Concordia; grandchildren Chelsea, Allie and Theodore Bieker.

Linda was a graduate of Abilene High School with the class of 1961 and worked for Duckwall-Alco for almost 45 years. After her retirement, she worked as a tax preparer for H &amp; R Block in Abilene and a substitute lunch lady in the Abilene Public Schools. Linda was married to Terry Holmes on November 4, 1978 in Abilene.

Linda was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary in Abilene and was a majority member of Bethel #7 and past Supreme, Grand and Grand Bethel leader for the International Order of Job’s Daughters, and member of the Order of the Eastern Star. 

Linda and Terry enjoyed going to Sturgis every year until his death in 2012. She enjoyed going to casinos and to Las Vegas with her friends. Linda is survived by her daughter Holly Walker of Abilene, sister Carol Roger of Nebraska, grandchildren Sarah Jackson and Noah Nevitt, and four grea- grandsons, several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Terry, three of her siblings, and her parents. The family has selected cremation and there will be no services.

Marjorie Olson, age 102 3/4, was born December 23, 1919, in Hymer, KS. She was the daughter of Joel and Blanchepiller. She died September 17 at Pioneer Ridge in Lawrence. 

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. -7 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2022 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Abilene. Funeral service will take place at the church on Saturday September 24, 2022 at 10 a.m. with burial at Abilene Cemetery. Lunch will be served after the burial. Please wear her favorite color purple to celebrate a life well-lived. Marjorie grew up on the family farm near Frankfort, KS. She graduated from Frankfort High School in 1938 and attended Kansas State University, later graduating from Marymount College in Salina with a BS in education. She loved every minute of her teaching career, starting out in a one-room rural country school in Marshall County, KS, and later as a teacher in the Abilene school district for over 20 years. She married Kenneth Olson in 1941 and settled in Abilene where both became active members of the community. They were avid K-State fans, and Marjorie was “fan of the week” at a KU-KSU football game when she was 91. Throughout her life she belonged to many organizations including Beta Sigma Phi, Ladies Literary League, Friends of the Eisenhower Foundation, Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Kansas State Presidents Club. She was one of the founding members of the H.O.P.E. Center. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday school and bible school classes, sang in the choir, served as a church council member and was a member of the Women’s organization. Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Olson and her daughter Carol Hires and her husband Albert, her brothers Joe Spiller, Wayne Spiller, and her sisters Fern Hines and Wilma Drinkwater.

She is survived by her son Dr. Gary "Butch" Olson and his wife Sue, Lawrence, and grandchildren Kimberly Smith and her husband Daniel, Roanoke, VA, Jody Mintken and her husband John, Winter Park, CO, Katy Olson, Plover, WI, Beth Colon and her husband Jimmie, New Orleans, Taylor Washburn and her husband Zachary, Phoenix, Cameron Case, Kansas City, and her special niece Susan Religa and her family from Manhattan. Marjorie had 14 great-grandchildren. Leonard Wood, Missouri, the son of James Edward and Viola Mary (Mengel) Woodard, but was raised in Conneautville, Pennsylvania. RJ left us to join his Heavenly Father September 16, 2022 at his home in Abilene at the age of 65. RJ volunteered with the Friends of Youth Program in Pennsylvania for many of his young adult years, adopting six children as a single father before moving to South Carolina where he met his wife.

He married Kathy Cormack on August 10, 1991 in Abilene. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his father James Woodard of Livingston, Texas, daughter Cassidy Lauren Meins and her husband Cody of Wichita, son Alexander Ryan Woodard of Salina, his sister Terri and her husband Randy Baker of Katy, Texas and six nieces and nephews: Doug Baker, Donovan Baker, Danielle Baker Rodriguez, Evan Middleton, Claire Cormack, and Rob Cormack, and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his&nbsp;mother Mary and his stepmother Sandy. RJ was the owner of an online hobby and craft store and had done everything from working for NASA to working for Kwik Shop. He enjoyed music, theatre, travel, cooking, reading, and landscaping his yard. Cremation has been selected by the family. Services will be Saturday, September 24 at 11:00 a.m. at Community Bible church in Abilene with Pastor Rob Ely officiating.  Marian is survived by her daughters Nancy Rectenwald of Salina, Sandra (Bill) Needle of Bonner Springs, grandson Brandon Rectenwald of Manhattan, a sister Jean Glenn of League City, Texas and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Graham, and her parents Howard and Edna Barber.

Marian was born in Republic County, Kansas on a family farm where she inherited her parents’ values of work, responsibility, and concern for others. 

Marian graduated from Courtland High School and went on to attend Brown Mackie College in Salina. After completing Brown Mackie Marian went to work at Kansas Power and Light in Salina. After Nancy was born, Marian became a full-time homemaker and devoted her life to her family and church. 

While working at KPL, she met Graham Larson. Marian and Graham married in 1954 and enjoyed life together until Graham passed in 2012. They liked spending their winters in Texas, weekend afternoons at their farm, but their favorite activity was any time spent with their grandson Brandon.

Marian’s gentle and kind spirit made her a favorite with her family, friends, and caregivers. She was a blessing to us all.

A visitation and funeral service will be held in her honor at First United Methodist Church in Salina, Kansas on Saturday, September 24, 2022. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m.

Iuma Dylan Lucas Thornhill, 22, of McPherson passed away Wednesday, September 14th, 2022.

Dylan was born August 11th, 2000, in Hutchinson, Kansas to Travis Thornhill and Jessica (Phillips) Thornhill. 

Dylan is survived by his son Liam Douglas (2) of Salina; his brothers Dakota Thornhill and Tyray White; and sisters Hailey and Taylor Thornhill; his parents Travis and Jessica; his grandparents Cathleen and Doain Bowman of Council Grove, Sharon Goodwin of McPherson, and Robert Thornhill of Ramona.

Dylan was preceded in death by his grandfather Jamie Phillips, and cousin Emily R. Phillips.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 22, 5-8 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary in Salina.

Services will be Friday, September 23, at 10:00 am, at Ryan Mortuary in Salina, with burial in Monroe Cemetery in Beverly.

Barbara was born in Kansas City, Missouri on May 21, 1932 to Victor and Mary (Guarino) Passiglia. She attended North High School, Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from Park College, Parkville, Missouri in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in education.After graduation, Barbara moved to Ellsworth, Kansas and taught at Ellsworth Junior High School. She met the love of her life, Donald Smischny, in 1954 at choir practice at the Ellsworth Presbyterian Church when he returned to his hometown of Ellsworth after serving overseas in the Navy during the Korean War. They were married in Kansas City, Missouri on May 29, 1955 and together they had four children: Randy Smischny - Manhattan, Kansas; Cheryl Klink (Doug) - Estes Park, Colorado; Melinda Hutton (Tracy) - North Newton, Kansas; and Janis Smischny - Salina, Kansas.Barbara raised her four children in Ellsworth, and returned to teaching when her youngest daughter started elementary school. She was a Title IX teacher in the Ellsworth School District for 19 years. She was very active in the Ellsworth Presbyterian Church, and she and Don enjoyed square dancing with the Ellsworth Twirlers. She was an excellent bridge player, and played in several women’s and couples’ bridge clubs. Barbara was also a proud member of the American Association of University Women.Barbara and Don moved to Salina, Kansas in 1996, where they enjoyed an active retirement. They have resided at Salina Presbyterian Manor since 2008. She was an active member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed traveling with her husband and family, singing in the church choir, dancing, playing cards, reading voraciously, and cooking - especially her famous Italian spaghetti and meatballs.Barbara is survived by her husband of 67 years, Don Smischny, her four children, and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Victor Passiglia, Jr.A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 22, at 10:30 a.m., at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, Salina, Kansas.
