On Thursday December 1, 2022, Rita Jo Braden, age 65, won her fight with cancer and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.&nbsp; She was born in Clay Center, Kansas on February 25, 1957 to Dale and Anna Mae (Avery) Newell. &nbsp;

She attended Wakefield Schools and graduated valedictorian in 1975.&nbsp; She then attended Manhattan Area Technical College and subsequently began working in the Animal Science Department at Kansas State University.&nbsp; 

After moving back to Wakefield, she was employed at the ASCS office in Clay Center.&nbsp; Rita Jo then worked for and eventually owned Living Stories Inc., shipping child evangelization materials worldwide. She later served as the Wakefield Public Library Director for nearly 20 years. As an avid reader this was a vocation she was well suited for and thoroughly enjoyed.&nbsp;

On September 24, 1977, Rita Jo was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Ladd Braden.&nbsp; The arrival of Steven Dale completed their family in January 1984.&nbsp;

Rita Jo’s deep faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was the guiding influence in her life.&nbsp; She was a member of Milford Church, serving many years as a member of the board and as pianist. Over the last ten years, Rita Jo’s life was greatly blessed and she reaped rich spiritual growth, inspiration, and joy from fellowship with the members of her women’s Bible study group.

Rita Jo developed a growing passion for quilting in recent years. She greatly enjoyed creating and gifting her beautiful creations to family, friends, and even those she never met. Her quilts celebrated new lives and provided warmth and comfort to those in need.

Also central in Rita Jo and Ladd’s life, has been the nurturing and Godly upbringing of their son Steven Dale, who has been a source of great joy, inspiration, and entertainment to family, friends, and a wide circle of acquaintances.

Rita Jo was preceded in death by her parents.&nbsp; 

She is survived by her husband Ladd and son Steven Dale, brother Marc Newell of Wakefield, sister Shan (Marcia) and husband Denny Gfeller of rural Junction City, and sister Teresa K. Newell of Fargo, ND.&nbsp;&nbsp; She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Rita Jo’s life will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at the Wakefield Methodist Church.

Visitation will also be held at the Wakefield Methodist Church from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2022.

In lieu of flowers, Rita Jo’s wishes were that memorials be made to The Wakefield Museum and Milford Church and may be sent c/o the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.

In the midst of Rita Jo’s battle, it became her heart’s desire to share her testimony and be a witness of the healing grace of God to those battling cancer and other afflictions. In honor and support of her wishes, the family would also like to develop a fund to provide the book “Healed of Cancer” by Dodie Osteen, which was a source of great comfort and encouragement to Rita Jo. Memorial funds may also be directed to support this mission.

She also enjoyed going to concerts, and listening to music. Bonnie is survived by her brothers Stanley and his wife Susan Downey of Newton, Walter “Jake” and his wife Jenny Downey of Rose Hill, her sister Carol and her husband Bill Rickenbrode of Cocoa, Florida, and several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Mass of Christian Burial for Bonnie will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2022 at the St. Phillips Catholic Church in Hope with Father George Chalbhagam as celebrant. He was a machine sander at Crestwood Cabinetry.

Survivors include his mom and dad, Steve and Pam Rontti of Delphos, Kansas; daughter Serenity Goben and her mom Savanna Riffel of Abilene, Kansas; partner Maggie Mangum; sister Michelle Rontti of Delphos, Kansas; brother Daniel Rontti (Cora Champion), of Salina, Kansas; four nieces; aunts and uncles; best friend Cyus Whitney; grandmother Kathy Ellis of Evansville, Indiana; and grandfather Donald Rontti of Loveland, Colorado.

He worked for 18 years as a truck driver for Apex Construction.

He was preceded in death by parents Daniel Lee and C. "Oneta" (Meyer) Grubbs, his son Phillip R. Grubbs, Jr., in 2019, sisters Ramona G. Goodwin, and Lillie Stock, and brother Gene Grubbs in 2020.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 59 years, Evelyn R. (May) Grubbs, brother Daniel Dean Grubbs and his wife; Karen, sister-in-law Edna Grubbs; and his in-laws Robert May of Ewing, MO., Wayne May and his wife Judy of Idaho, Joan Brackney of Chapman, Alice Disney and her husband Bob of Delphos, and Danny May and his wife Sandy of Chicago, IL., and an aunt Wilma Frontier of Junction City, and a step-grandson, Doug Tabler and many nieces and nephews.

Don Byron Hough passed away on November 22, 2022, at Salina Regional Hospital due to complications from COVID. He was 92 years old. Don was born June 11, 1930, in Saline County, KS to Robert and Allie Hough.

Don attended Kansas Wesleyan where he received a degree in business and played trombone in the band.

 He then attended Central Baptist Seminary in KC where he met his wife, Nedra Korab, who was a music major and was director of “Camp Fire Girls of America.” They were married on December 26, 1955. 

After graduation, Don became pastor of First Baptist Church of Gypsum. His basic rule was “to know people, you have to call on them.” Every evening they would visit with families in the congregation. After the death of his young daughter from cancer, Don felt it was time for a change. The family moved back to Salina and Don began working with his father at Hough Piano and Organ Company. This became one of his greatest joys, bringing music to people’s homes. He visited churches and state fairs. He organized piano recitals. The business had been open for 75 years until his retirement. 

Don was very active in the First Baptist Church in Salina. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club and Moose Lodge. When not working, Don loved to spend weekends at Milford Lake, camping and boating.

Later in life, Don moved to McCall Manor, now Reflections Retirement Resort after a below knee amputation. With the help of Steve Peeples of Peeples Orthotics in Wichita, and the many “angels” who helped with his recovery, Don learned to walk with his prosthetic and even danced again. Don lived independently and had many friends. He played the organ a couple of Fridays a month. He enjoyed group activities, (except BINGO). He loved trips to Kansas Wesleyan to hear the symphony. Friends and family laughed at his jokes; Don loved making people feel welcome and cared for. 

He found a loving companion in Consuelo Diaz until her passing and more recently, Wynona Lawson. &nbsp;Visits from his children and grandchildren brought him great joy as well as attending their many celebrations.

Don is preceded in death by his parents Byron and Allie Hough, his wife Nedra Hough, daughter Lisa Hough, and son Loren Hough. 

He is survived by his children Allene Eland, Lenexa, KS; Darald Hough, Scottsdale, AZ; Laina Cossel, El Paso, TX and ten grandchildren: Korab Eland, Cherys Austin, Noah Eland, Noelle Eland, Garrett Dyck, Rachel Walker, Becca Hough, Luke Cossel, Mark Cossel, and Ruth Cossel.

Karen D. McCall was born November 12, 1941, to Darrel and Lorena (Lindamood) Van Tine in Topeka, Kansas. She passed away Thursday, December 1, 2022, at Community North Hospital, Indianapolis, IN.

Karen married Merrill McCall on June 12, 1960. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage. 

Karen was a wonderful homemaker and stay-at-home mother in Bloomington/Normal Illinois until she embarked on a career with the federal government as a caseworker for Congressman Edward Madigan and Congressman Tom Ewing. 

Karen retired with Merrill, and they built their retirement home at the Lake of the Ozarks where they resided for 22 years. 

Merrill preceded Karen in death on August 17, 2020. They enjoyed sharing their lake home with friends and family. They were members of the Elks Lodge in Laurie, Missouri where Karen truly loved to play bridge with many special friends.

Karen is survived by her son Mark (Sharon) McCall, daughter Marcia (Bob) Myers, grandsons Zane DeLorme and Kyle Mark Myers.

She was an amazing wife, mother, Nana and friend.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 8 at Wilson Family Funeral Home, 405 Argyle Ave., Minneapolis, KS 67467 with graveside services following at Highland Cemetery at noon.

Glenna D. Clark, 92, of Kansas City, MO, passed away on December 1, 2022 in Raymore, MO.

Glenna Darlene Clark was born on the farm in Scandia, KS to Glenwood and Helen (Goodwin) Freed on July 3, 1930.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She is a graduate of Scandia High School in 1948.

She married her husband, Paul Clark, in June of 1950. They were married 69 wonderful years.

She was very involved as a Cub Scout den mother.

She was active in gardening as a master gardener, particularly day lilies.&nbsp;&nbsp; She had over 200 in her Manhattan, KS yard.&nbsp;&nbsp; She even developed a hybrid she named, Glenna.&nbsp;&nbsp; She was a longtime member of the Kansas Associated Garden Clubs.

Longtime residents of Manhattan, KS, Glenna and Paul welcomed three children and were blessed with seven grandchildren, and eight grandchildren, all of whom she enjoyed immensely.&nbsp; The couple moved to Topeka, KS in 2009.

Glenna was preceded in death by her husband Paul in 2019; parents Glenwood and Helen (Goodwin) Freed; brothers Gaylord, Ron, Roger, and sister Loretta (Freed) Kirk.

She is missed dearly by her daughter Michele (Steve) Boschetto of Phoenix, AZ, son David (Christine) Clark and son Greg (Angie) Clark, all of Kansas City, MO;&nbsp;seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; sister Judy Hall of Alberta Lea, MN; other relatives, and friends,

Graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 Pp.m., Saturday, December 10, 2022 at the Courtland Cemetery, Courtland, Kansas with Pastor Sandra Jellison-Knock officiating.

Interment will follow the graveside services.

Quintin Hue&nbsp;“Q”&nbsp;Silsby, of Plainville, KS, passed away on November 30, 2022, at his home in Plainville, at the age 26. He was born on February 21, 1996, to Robert “Bob” and Lisa (Nobert) Silsby in Beloit, KS. He was married to Samantha&nbsp;“Sam”&nbsp;VonHeeder on March 20, 2021,&nbsp;in Ainsworth, NE.&nbsp;

Quintin grew up in&nbsp;Cawker City, KS and graduated from St. John High School in 2014. He then went on to Fort Hays State University&nbsp;where he was President of the Sigma&nbsp;Chi House. He obtained a Criminal Justice Degree with a Minor in Business in 2016.&nbsp;He then came to Rooks County to work for the Sheriff’s Department and was&nbsp;currently&nbsp;a Patrol&nbsp;Sergeant.&nbsp;

Quintin was very patient and could fix anything, especially Sam’s&nbsp;mishaps - and he would often give his mom and Miranda advice on fixing anything techy.&nbsp;He enjoyed hunting and fishing, being at home watching movies and shows with Sam, taking a drive in the country drinking a beer, playing cards at Chad and Aimee’s and listening to the Patio Play List. He couldn’t swim, but that didn’t keep him from enjoying the lake and float trips with Sam! But mostly, he loved his wife, family, friends, and dogs&nbsp;dearly. He was such a good husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, and dog-dad. His sincere love and gentle spirit will impact our lives forever.&nbsp;

Although our hearts are weighing heavy during this difficult time, we can find comfort in knowing that Quintin is at peace in Heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ. We all have so many memories, stories, and wonderful times with him. Those are the things that we will cherish forever.&nbsp;

Left to mourn&nbsp;Quintin’s untimely&nbsp;passing&nbsp;are&nbsp;his parents, Bob and Lisa Silsby of Cawker City, KS; wife, Samantha Silsby of the home in Plainville; sisters, Miranda (Alan) Housh of Glen Elder, KS and Leandra Silsby of Junction City, KS; nieces and nephews, Leah, Eli, and Gemma Housh; and fur-babies, Buddy, Dax and Zeke.&nbsp;

Quintin is preceded in death by his grandparents and nephew, Paul Housh.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 5, 2022, at 10:30 AM at the First Christian Church in Plainville. Visitation will be held on Sunday, 2PM until 8PM with the family receiving friends 5PM to 6:30PM at the funeral home in Plainville.

Esley Earl Schmidt, 96, of Walton, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at his home. He was born June 25, 1926 in Newton, Kansas, the son of Rudolf B. and Susie (Voth) Schmidt. He graduated from Bethel College with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Esley was united in marriage to Mildred Ruth Jarboe on May 15, 1955 in Grandview, Missouri. She preceded him in death on September 28, 2004, after nearly 50 years of marriage. Esley worked in cancer research at KU Medical Center in Kansas City as a chemist prior to their marriage. He worked with his father-in-law and brother-in-law around Grandview, Missouri and Olathe, Kansas areas in the home construction business.

Esley and Mildred moved to Texas near Corpus Christy where Esley worked as a chemical engineer for the Sinclair Refining Company. In 1960, they moved near Waverly, Kansas where Esley farmed, drove cement trucks, and worked as a courier for Pony Express. 

He was very active with the Waverly 4-H club where he served as an adult leader for many years. Esley and Mildred also spent many years placing over 200 foreign exchange students mostly in Coffey, Lyon and Osage Counties. He was a member of the Tabor Mennonite Church, rural Newton. Esley is survived by his four children, Rick (Cindy) Schmidt of Lyndon, Jay (Carolee) Schmidt of Waverly, Lori (Terry) Fischer of Waverly, and Neal Schmidt (Stephanie Farstvedt) of Pittsburg; sister, Hildred Schmidt of Walton; ten grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sister Ethel Ellen Schmidt. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 9, 2022 at Tabor Mennonite Church, rural Newton. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery.

She was born on August 23, 1938 in McPherson, Kansas, the daughter of Dewey Cullen and Lottie (Rump) Slabach. She graduated from Inman High School with the class of 1956. Marjorie was united in marriage to Wayne A. Goertzen on September 14, 1958. He survives of the home.

She was a member of the Monitor Church of the Brethren, rural Conway, Kansas. Marjorie worked at Buhler Sunshine Home for over 30 years, holding many positions including her longest position as activity director. Maresch, age 75 years, coming from Rush Center at a young age, he became a legendary lifelong Great Bend, Kansas resident, and passed away on Tuesday evening, November 29, 2022 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;Aaron was born on November 15, 1947 in Great Bend, Kansas to Glenn E. and Marilyn L. (Bortz) Maresch. &nbsp;He was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Essmiller in October of 1968 in Great Bend and they later divorced. &nbsp;Aaron served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Norfolk. He was an engineer and owned and operated Aaron’s Repair &amp; Supply Inc. which he started in 1978. &nbsp;Aaron’s business and legacy will proceed to operate under Tom Malone and Devon Nelson. Aaron was&nbsp;a dedicated Barton&nbsp;County Fair Association Board Member since 1980. Aaron loved his family and friends fiercely. &nbsp;He had a passion for making a difference in the lives of so many, especially through 4-H. He loved to fish, enjoy a good western, entertain friends and family, play with his border collie Dot, and enjoy life to its fullest. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Elsie Kay Challans of Newton, Kansas, age 81 years, passed into the arms of her Savior Jesus peacefully on Thursday morning, December 1, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She was born December 22, 1940, in rural Halstead, KS to Charles R. and Minnie M. (Giersch) Hege. Throughout her life she resided in Newton, Lyons, Salina and rural Halstead, KS.

Elsie attended Newton High School and Barton County Community College. She loved her family well. She was so fond of her many friends and frequently would spend time on phone calls with them, and in previous years, would have a weekly “coffee crew” she met with in Salina. She adored Christmas, was a voracious reader and loved Cardinal birds as well as growing and nurturing flowers, especially Clematis vine.

Elsie worked for 26 years as a paraprofessional with special needs children in the USD 405 (Lyons), USD 401 (Chase) and USD 305 (Salina) school systems. She loved her work and was dedicated to helping children with special needs reach their highest potential.

On October 7, 1958, she married Robert R. Challans at the Sister Frieda Chapel, Newton, KS. Robert and Elsie celebrated 64 years of marriage in 2022. She dedicated her life to raising 3 sons and rejoicing in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Elsie is survived by her husband, Robert of Newton: 3 sons, Robert F. Challans of Hesston, KS; Mark W. (&amp; Cindy) Challans of Smolan, KS and Dr. Phillip (&amp; Jama) Challans of Wichita, KS.

Elsie came from a large family of 10 children and is also survived by brother Richard Hege of Newton, KS and sister Delores(&amp; Fred) Sexauer of DeSoto, TX. Elsie was extremely proud of her 5 grandchildren; Daniel, Lacey, Caley, Brandon and Sky and 6 great grandchildren; Mallorie, Mike, Miles, Makenna, Marshall and Nash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Donald Gene and Kenneth (Kenny Earl) and sisters Mary Alice Zimmer, Betty Lou Lea, Linda Bemiss, Charlene Reidlinger and Ruth Ann Cole.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel, Newton, KS with Pastor Jonathan Whitley of Heartland Community Church,Wichita, presiding.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Family and friends are invited to gather at The Breadbasket Restaurant, Newton, KS at 3:30 pm for food and fellowship.

Private family interment will take place, at a later date, at the Fairview Pioneer Cemetery, rural Halstead, KS.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Kim Martin; and infant granddaughte, Brittaney Fattig. Cremation is planned. Caleb was born on June 17, 2002, in McPherson, KS, the son of Robert Lucian Newberry, Jr. and Brenda Nancy (Steel) Newberry.&nbsp; 

Caleb attended the McPherson Schools and was currently a student in the STRIVE Program.

Caleb attended Countryside Covenant Church.

Survivors include his parents Robert Newberry and Brenda Newberry, both of McPherson, KS; sisters Sarah Newberry of McPherson, KS and Audrey Miller of Haysville, KS; grandparents Deborah Steel of McPherson, KS, Dennis and Sherill Carlson of McPherson, KS, and Robert “Bob” and Lorrie Newberry of Antigo, WI; aunts and uncles Melissa Newberry, Robert Steel, Darla Meyer, Lee and Shirley James, Joan Chandler, Brad and Pam James, Vonda and Steve Keuchler, Diane and Terry Rhea, Lori Carlson, Kelly (Chris) Carlson-Nicola, and Tara (Israel) Flores; and many more extended family and friends.

Austin L. Havens, 88, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, surrounded by family at the McPherson Hospital. &nbsp;

He owned and operated Havens Printing and Copy Shop.

Austin was born on December 11, 1933, in Cherry, NE, the son of Charles Granison and Lydia Elizabeth (Gotheridge) Havens.&nbsp; Austin was raised until age 11 on a farm near Green Ridge, MO and then at the Grace Children’s Home in Henderson, NE. 

He later graduated from Berean Academy in Elbing, KS and Taylor University in Upland, IN.&nbsp;

On June 13, 1954, Austin was united in marriage to Gladys Ruth Gaeddert in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on September 27, 2013.&nbsp; He married Lavina Ruth (Penner) Goering on March 7, 2015, in McPherson, KS.&nbsp;

He was a member of New Hope Evangelical Church and Kiwanis International.&nbsp; He also volunteered for Friendship Meals and McPherson Hospital.

Survivors include: his wife Lavina of the home; children Charlie Havens (Barbara) of Chicago, IL, Phil Havens (Lori) of McPherson, KS, Hal Havens (Kelly) of Lenexa, KS, and Rebecca Provinse of St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren, Jessica Havens, Allison Havens (Omar), Joshua Havens (Christy), Derek Havens (Courtney), Audrey Benham (Matthew), Kasey Wiglesworth (Curtis), Brian Havens, (Kay), and Alexander Provinse; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, John Havens of Newton, KS; three step-children, Lynnae Applequist (Lee) of McPherson, KS, Darin Goering (Teresa) of Salina, KS, and Lisa Bouray (Kirk) of McPherson, KS; &nbsp;seven step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.
