Kermit Ratzlaff, Hillsboro, Kansas, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2022, at Parkside Home in Hillsboro at the age of 100.

Kermit was born December 26, 1921, in the Hillsboro Hospital to Jonathan J. and Marie Plenert Ratzlaff. In 1928, they moved to the Balko area in the panhandle of Oklahoma, in time for the hardships of the dust bowl. The family was part of the Balko Mennonite Brethren Church, and he was baptized at the age of 12. Kermit was valedictorian at Corn Bible Academy and at Bethany school at Balko.

He enrolled in Tabor College, and here he met Ruth Warkentin. In the fall of 1942, they were engaged, days before he was inducted into Civilian Public Service as a Conscientious Objector, serving in Oregon, Wisconsin, and California. 

Kermit and Ruth were married in Los Angeles on August 11, 1944, and lived in Pasadena, California, for 14 years where they produced five children. They spent 4four years in west Los Angeles, and he received his Ph.D. in zoology from UCLA in 1961.

In 1962, the family moved to Edwardsville, Illinois, where he joined the faculty of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He remained at SIUE until retirement in 1992.

Within a couple years, he and Ruth moved to Hillsboro, Kansas. There he stayed always busy with gardening and volunteering. He immediately joined the Lions Club and helped at the Adobe House Museum. He was an active proponent of recycling in Hillsboro. Kermit led the Senior Center board, and his interest in affordable housing led him to leadership at Grand Oaks and to working with Habitat for Humanity. 

Still needing activity and wanting to be busy, he was a paperboy until age 97, possibly the world’s oldest. His hundredth birthday slideshow may be viewed at https://theRatzlaffs.net

Kermit was predeceased by his wife of nearly 62 years, Ruth, and by his brother Harvey, and his sister Merlie Friesen. 

He is survived by five children: Kenneth (Virginia), Ronald (Nancy), David (Elizabeth), Marilyn Lovinger (Warren) and Eugene (Jewel); 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and his sister Irma Koop.

Viewing will be at Parkview MB Church, on October 7, 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in the Hillsboro MB Cemetery at 10 a.m., October 8, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Parkview MB Church.

Anna Grace (Wiens) Flickinger, 100, died peacefully September 28, 2022, in Inman, Kansas. Anna Grace was born September 11, 1922, to Martin and Nettie (Vogt) Wiens in rural Inman. 

She married Virgil Flickinger on August 10, 1949, and they shared 37 years of marriage before his death in 1986. Education and service were important to Anna Grace. She taught first grade in various schools in Kansas before she and Virgil spent two years volunteering with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) doing relief work in Europe from 1950-1952. They spent a year in Naples, Italy, and another year in Germany, briefly in Berlin, but mainly in Kaiserslautern. Together they raised their family in Inman, Kansas, where Anna Grace was active in church and community activities and organizations, as well as driving a kindergarten bus route for Inman Grade School, and working at Pleasant View Home as a CMA. She enjoyed reading, quiltmaking, music, travel, and genealogy “in that order.” She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil; parents Martin D. and Nettie (Vogt) Wiens; sisters Hilda (Wiens) Wiens and Kathrien (Wiens) Wedel; and brother Ervin J. Wiens. Surviving are her children Carol Flickinger (Roger Juhnke) of Newton, Jim Flickinger of Newton, Jean (Russ) Gaeddert of Hutchinson, and Nancy (Jeff) Friesen of Inman; grandchildren Adam Gaeddert (Rebecca Woodruff), Sam (Keila) Gaeddert, Jake (Rebecca) Friesen, and Jared Friesen; and great-grandchildren Clara and Eleanor Gaeddert, Jackson and Wesley Gaeddert. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Bethel Mennonite Church.

She was born January 13, 1942 in Halstead, KS, the daughter of Fred J. and Anna (Ratzlaff) Nightengale.

Virgie attended Halstead High School and later graduated from Scott City High School. 

She was a nurse aid at Halstead Hospital and a homemaker.

Virgie was united in marriage to Merle E. Koehn on October 21, 1962 at Halstead. He survives.

Virgie and Merle attended Halstead Grace Mennonite Church when they were younger and they are current members of West Point Mennonite Church in West Point, Mississippi.

Other survivors include her daughters Juli Buller of Galva, KS and Kristen Campbell of West Point, MS; son Brian Koehn and his wife Kay of Prairie, MS.; grandchildren Jesse, Brianna, Kip, Ivan, Lexie, Gretchen, Samantha, Anna, and Zack; and six great-grandchildren.

Virgie was preceded in death by her parents; ten sisters; two brothers; grandson Andrew Campbell; and son-in-law Tim Campbell.

Lloyd William Littrell was born on August 21, 1948 in Holdrege, Nebraska, the son of George and Genevive Smith Littrell. He died Monday, September 26, 2022 at the Salina Regional Hospital in Salina, Kansas at the age of 74.

He grew up in California before his family moved back to Nebraska and Kansas. He attended Phillipsburg High School, where he graduated in 1966.

&nbsp;On September 20, 1967, he was united in marriage with Joyce McClintock, and they recently celebrated 55 years of marriage together. Four children, Dawn, Jana, Jeremy, and Heath were born to this union.

Lloyd joined the United States Air Force, and served in the Vietnam War.&nbsp; They lived in California for a brief time before returning to Beloit, where they currently reside.

He worked for the City of Beloit for 34 years, serving as the Director of Plant Operations. He also served two terms on the Beloit City Council, and was also very active in the Zion Lutheran Church, serving on the church council for many years. He was a life member of the VFW Post #6242, and was also a member of the American Legion.

In his spare time, Lloyd enjoyed doing genealogy, coaching baseball, and being active in the Boy Scouts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Donna Maaske and Barbara Russell; brother Darrell Bohl; parents-in-law Vernice and Peggy McClintock; and a sister-in-law, Linda McClintock.

Charles Roscoe “Charlie” Townsend, 92, died Sunday, September 25, 2022 in Wichita, Kansas. He was born March 25, 1930 in Grinnell, Kansas to John “Matt” and Apalona “Lona” (Fischer) Townsend.

He married Lorene Boden in Downs, Kansas and together they created a beautiful life and family. The love of their lives were their three children, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Charles worked for the City of Beloit before retiring in 1995.

A lifelong learner, Charles was interested in everything from history and geography, to science and philosophy, his inquisitive mind knew no bounds. An avid reader, he always had a book in his hand. It could be a classic novel, a western, a collection of poetry, or any source that could add to his wealth of knowledge.

Survivors include his wife Lorene of Beloit; son Steve (Susan) Townsend of Cheney, Kansas; daughters Jane Cale of St. Charles, Missouri and Judy (Dennis) Sander of Liberal, Kansas; his six grandchildren, Jason (Mariah) Townsend, Matt Townsend, Jared Cale, Jami (Aaron) Defenbaugh, Melissa (Sandon) Hilditch, and Madelyn Sander; nine great-grandchildren; and his sister Marie (Dale) Suter of Oakley, Kansas.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bob (Ruth) and Bill (Veda) Townsend, and son-in-law James Cale.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, September 30, at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday and visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the rosary service begins at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

SALINA -&nbsp;Carol A. Stewart&nbsp;was called home on September 22, 2022 in Salina, KS. She was born on December 24, 1950 in Beloit, Kansas to Clare and June Nelson. The family later settled in Denver, Colorado. Carol remained in Denver until 2015 when she moved to Salina.

During her work life, she had several jobs that she always excelled at. These included a deputy sheriff, secretary, and ultimately, working for the state of Colorado for 40 years.

Carol loved the ocean and anything to do with it. Her home décor included shells, paintings, books and much more that showed her love for the sea. She loved music and dancing. Her favorite band was Pink Floyd and it was often heard playing in her car or home. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She was also famous among her family for sending cards. No matter the occasion, everyone could expect a card from her that let them know she was thinking of them. She was a very giving and caring woman that touched the life of anyone she met. She had many lifelong friends that were more like family.

She adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her happiest moments were spending time with her family. Carol’s favorite holiday was Christmas because that is when family all gathered and it made her heart happy. She got the most joy at Christmas eve when her birthday was celebrated with family.

Carol will be dearly missed by anyone she ever met. She had several close friends at her last residence that she spoke of often.

She was preceded in passing by her parents.

 She is survived by one sister, Nona Van Winkle (Wilbur) Colorado, two brothers, Clint Nelson (Pat), Colorado and Ray Nelson (Susan) Wisconsin, one son Scott Sitton (Layne) Kansas, one daughter, Shareen Knowles (Lima) Colorado, five granddaughters, Kayla Sitton, Kansas, Taylor Sitton, Kansas, Haylie Werner (Austin), Kansas, Brianna Lima, Colorado, Kamryn Sitton, Kansas, two grandsons Sterling Lima, Colorado, Bronx Sitton, Kansas, and five great-grandchildren, Tatum, Isabella, Nora, Aujzia, Wren.

There will be a celebration of life at her request at a date to be determined. We will miss her greatly here, but we know that she has rejoined other loved ones that have been called home before her.

MARQUETTE - Ida Forristal passed away on September 17, 2022, at the age of 97. She was born on the family farm in Trego County, Kansas, on January 8, 1925, to Nicholas and Anna (Stadelman) Dreiling. 

She was the youngest of nine children, was raised on the farm, and attended school in WaKeeney. 

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis, where she was united in marriage to William L. Forristal on August 12, 1946.

Ida was a devout Catholic all her life. She loved dancing, playing golf, cheating at games, laughing with her friends and her caregivers at Riverview Estates. 

Most of all, she loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a wife for 32 years, a mother for 74 years, a grandmother for 45 years, and a great-grandmother for eight years.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents; husband William; five brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include brother Alfred Dreiling of Hays, who will soon be 102; sons David of Salina, and George Forristal (Nora) of Highlands Ranch, CO; daughters, Vicky Lonergan (Mark) of San Diego, CA, and Mary Kay Lindh (Kerry) of Marquette; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Her life will be celebrated with a Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Salina.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Marilyn Nily; son Gary Nily; sisters Edna Vehige, Imogene Brady; brothers Chester Nily, and Donnie Nily.

Cremation has been chosen and no services are planned.

Jean Estelle Peters, the daughter of Robert Bouchard and Phyllis Estelle (Brandon) Bouchard was born August 15, 1948 in Canyon City, Colorado and passed away on September 9, 2022 at Republic County Hospital, Belleville, KS at the age of 74 years, and 24 days.

Jean grew up in the Penrose, Florence, and the Westcliffe, Colorado area.&nbsp;&nbsp; She completed her schooling and later attended Business College for one year. Jean lived in Pueblo, Co for several years, working as a secretary for the Firestone Tire Company. 

She met Eugene Peters in 1968.&nbsp; They were united in marriage in 1969 and they moved to the family farm in the Cuba, KS area where they lived for 21 years.

She later worked for Region V Adult Services in Fairbury, NE for 20 years, working as an in house caregiver and later as an administrative med aide. She retired to Munden, KS and recently had moved to Belleville, KS.

Jean was a member of the Eastern Star for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Phyllis Bouchard;&nbsp; brother Pat; sister Yvonne Piquette, and granddaughter Raelene Henderson.

Jean is survived by two sons, Matthew (Rachel) Peters of Belleville, KS and&nbsp;Shawn (Karen) Woolsey of Belleville, KS; three grandchildren: &nbsp;Taylor Peters, Trevon Peters, and Tess Woolsey;&nbsp; three great-grandchildren:&nbsp; Trenton Zenger, Elora Henderson, and Brock Henderson;&nbsp; three brothers,&nbsp; Mike (Patty) Bouchard of Pueblo, CO,&nbsp; Jerry (Marsha) Bouchard and Tom (Vashaun) Bouchard all of Canyon City, CO;&nbsp; other relatives and friends.

Cremation was selected and a Memorial Gathering will be held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas. Friends may sign the register book and greet the family at this time.&nbsp;

She met Eugene Peters in 1968.&nbsp; They were united in marriage in 1969 and they moved to the family farm in the Cuba, KS area where they lived for 21 years.She later worked for Region V Adult Services in Fairbury, NE for 20 years, working as an in house caregiver and later as an administrative med aide. She was born July 9, 1925 in Galva, the daughter of Daniel and Beulah (Waln) Russell.

 On June 9, 1948 she married Billy B. Minear in Canton. He preceded her in death on June 4, 2011.

She was a member of the McPherson First United Methodist Church and the Canton American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Bruce (Tish) Minear, Colorado Springs, Colorado; two daughters, Nancy Banning, Hutchinson and Jill (Darren) Roller, Canton; a brother, Rex Russell, Mentor; a sister, Carolee Chartier, McPherson; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A grandson, Brian Minear, two brothers, Delton and Marvin Russell, and a sister, Yunietta Taylor, preceded her in death.

Eugene Mathias Eck, Beloit KS, passed away Friday, September 23, 2022 at the age of 100, at Hilltop Lodge. Eugene was born July 29, 1922 to Frank Eck and Rose (Wessling) Eck on the family farm south of Beloit.

 He attended Shutts County school until 8th grade. He started working and farming at a very young age. When the depression hit his parents lost their farm. Eugene worked even harder taking on whatever jobs that were available, and was eventually able to buy back the farm for his family. He cherished and considered the area around Beloit to be “God's Country.” He always said that he was just a steward of the land, doing God's work.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents Rose and Frank Eck, brothers Edward, Gerald, and infant brother Albert Eck, and sister Loretta (Eck) Coffelt.&nbsp;

Eugene is survived by his brothers Alfred Eck of Beloit, Donald Eck of Beloit; nieces Ielene Haynes of Beloit, Carmen (Charles) Marsh of Dallas TX; nephews Ralph (Diane) Pahls of Beloit, Michael (Heidi) Pahls of Beloit; many great-nieces, nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was a man of God, a hardworking farmer, a great brother, uncle, and friend. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. with a vigil rosary service beginning&nbsp;at 7 p.m.,&nbsp;Wednesday, Sept 28.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 29, all at the former Dollar General Building due to the construction at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Interment will follow&nbsp;mass at St. John's Cemetery. &nbsp;

Carolyn was born in Kansas City, Missouri on November 4, 1934, a daughter of Doris Jean (Dobson) and John Roe Fenton. Her family moved around many times as a child, but her home was in Mountain Home, Arkansas.

On February 14, 1954, Carolyn married Ray E. Heald in Salina, Kansas and to this union came three children, J. Michael, Ron, and Kathi. 

When their kids joined the Silver Sabres Drum and Bugle Corp, Ray and Carolyn were strong supporters and became very active within the Silver Sabres.

She was loved by many and enjoyed social events including quilting, playing cards, reading anything by James Patterson and her dogs, Carray, Hazie, and Sophie. Carolyn always had a smile on her face and welcomed anyone into her home.

Survivors include her daughter Kathi Jones, of Wichita, Kansas; son Ron Heald (Kathy), of Wichita, Kansas; four grandchildren, Aric DeLaney (Cassandra), Jamie DeLaney, Shaun Heald (Michelle), Nicholas Heald; two great-grandchildren, Liliana DeLaney, Aiden DeLaney; numerous nieces and nephews; and many close friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Ray Heald; and son J. Michael Heald; and brothers Bill and Bob Fenton.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 1st at First Christian Church in Salina, Kansas with Pastor Doug Amend officiating.

Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery Salina, Kansas.

Frybarger Obituary 2022 - Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home (tibbettsfischerfuneralhome.com)</a>May 13, 1992 - Septembe 20, 2022Joseph “Joey” Anthony Frybarger was born on May 13, 1992, at the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, and he passed away in September at the age of 30 years.Joey graduated from Granby (Virginia) High School in 2010, and then went on to receive his social sciences degree at Tidewater Community College, graduating with honors earning his AS degree.Joey was an avid musician who could play almost any musical instrument; he especially liked to play the acoustic guitar. Besides music, he enjoyed piecing together PCs.&nbsp; He also loved theosophical writing, being surrounded by nature, reading passages in his favorite book titled "The Book of the Way" by Lao Tzu and mentoring others in healing and humanity. His other passions included various gaming with many friends and family.&nbsp;Joey was a kind and loving man, was gentle and very spiritual, meditating often in natural surroundings.Joey is survived by his mother Leann Parker and her fiancé Nathan Looney of Norfolk, Virginia, his grandparents Robert and Juanita Frybarger of Belleville, &nbsp;aunt and uncle Glen and Julie Frybarger of Durham, N.C., cousins Anna Edmondson, Jake and Glen Jr. Frybarger, Shaina Mitchell, his father Joseph Ocasio, two half-brothers Matthew, Vincent, stepsister Summer Taylor along with numerous other cousins, family and many friends including his significant other Alyssa O’Neil.Memorial Services will be Saturday, October 1st, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville, KS with Pastor Craig Roberts officiating. Following the Memorial Services, the family will be greeting friends at a luncheon at the First Baptist Church in Belleville. &nbsp;Friends may sign Joey’s book on Friday, September 30th, from 9 a.m.&nbsp; – 5 p.m., at the funeral home.The services will be recorded and made available on the funeral home website following the services, for family and friends unable to attend.Memorials are requested to the family and may be sent in care of Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, P.O.
