See what's new at the Salina Public Library

Talented student and professional musicians will take the stage at Salina Central High School this evening to benefit the Salina Education Foundation.

305 LIVE is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Salina Central, 650 East Crawford Street. Admission is $10 per person.

Nathan Tyson and his Joe's Pet Project bandmates, as well as students and teachers from USD 305 are scheduled to rock the Salina Central auditorium, performing music by the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bastille, Joe Cocker, the Band, Ray LaMontagne, and others, according to Gary Denning, a member of the Salina Education Foundation Board of Trustees and a driving force behind 305 LIVE.

"This will be a typically loud concert so anyone with hearing concerns should consider hearing protection," Denning noted.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued the following hydrologic outlook.

A potent storm system will combine with strong lift and anomalous moisture to produce a widespread rain event Sunday through Monday.

At this time, we expect liquid equivalent amounts of one to two inches for much of central, southern, and eastern Kansas. Maximum precipitation amounts could approach 2 to 2.50 inches.

Rainfall amounts of this magnitude are less common this time of year, and could potentially push much of the area into a top-10 to top-15 wettest start to a year.

Cold or frozen ground combined with anomalous rainfall amounts and recent precipitation events could lead to some minor and nuisance level flooding impacts, including increased areas of standing water in fields and low-lying areas, some ponding of water in urban areas, and the possibility of difficult travel on dirt roads.

Rises on creeks, streams, and rivers are possible as well. If the higher end amounts closer to two inches occur, a few rivers could near, or exceed, flood stage.

CCMC receives Wound Center of Excellence Award

Cindy Short has joined Credit Union of America (CUA) as a real estate loan officer for the CUA Salina office, 582 S. Ohio.

Short brings more than four years of financial experience to CUA including her most recent position as a mortgage loan officer at a bank in Salina. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Fort Hays State University and her Associate of Applied Science degree from Cloud County Community College. 

Short will guide and assist members with their home lending needs and provide local underwriting of home loans.

Short joins CUA in Salina as real estate loan officer

An exhibit with art that revolves around a kitchen-based theme is set to open in The Gallery at Kansas Wesleyan University on Monday.

The special group exhibit, “The Year of the Super Kitchen,” is scheduled to run through March 27. The exhibit will feature works from three local artists, Debbie Wagner, Becky Hyberger and the late Peggy Medina, a KWU alumna and former director of The Gallery. Medina passed away last month. The exhibit, which has been shown at several galleries in the region, has continued in Medina’s honor.

“The Year of the Super Kitchen” is an exhibit that highlights each contributor’s way of being, thinking, and working. Wagner’s work, primarily paintings and fiber art, teams with Hyberger’s miniature constructions and Medina’s abstract assemblages to create and illustrate inspiration, exploration and transformation.  

A closing reception will be held in The Gallery on March 27 from 5 p.m.–6:30 p.m. Hyberger and Wagner are scheduled to make remarks at 5:30 p.m.

The Gallery, located in Sams Hall of Fine Arts, is open to the public at no charge.

Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank in need of food donations

Kansans for Life would like to extend its sincere appreciation to Kansas Senator Randall Hardy and State Representatives Dianna Dierks, JR Claeys and Steven Johnson for voting in favor of the Value Them Both Amendment to the Kansas Constitution.

Recent court rulings have cleared the way for an unlimited abortion industry in our state and Value Them Both is THE most important pro-life measure of our generation. While it came up a few votes shy in the Kansas House on February 7, the Amendment will likely be debated again later in the 2020 legislative session.

Value Them Both is a commonsense measure that would restore Kansans’ ability to have a say when it comes to the regulation of the abortion industry. Without this Amendment, every state pro-life law could be struck down in court and state Medicaid/taxpayer dollars will likely become a funding source for abortion.

We encourage readers to thank these legislators, encourage them to continue fighting for Value Them Both Amendment and place it on the August 2020 ballot.

On Jan. 29, 2020, a theft was reported at Walmart, 2900 South Ninth Street.

Between 5:15–5:40 p.m. on Jan. 29, a person was in the store aisles and placed merchandise in plastic bags, which he had in his possession, then left the store without paying for the merchandise. 

When leaving, the person was photographed by store employees, and described as younger white male wearing a green sweatshirt, blue jeans, and gray Nike high top shoes. The person was last seen running into the Olive Garden parking lot to a tan/pewter colored Ford Ranger pickup driven by another.

The tickets will go on sale at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 — 90 minutes before the 7:30 p.m. show.

The&nbsp;$20&nbsp;tickets — plus facility fee and taxes — are limited to two tickets per person and must be purchased in person at the box office.

The tradition of offering these tickets began in 1996 in New York when "RENT" moved to Broadway after a sold-out run in a small downtown theatre. The producers of the show are committed to continuing the tradition of offering these orchestra seats in each city the show will play.

ELLSWORTH –A Kansas man has been convicted of four child sex-crime related charges, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Karl Van Nice, 59, Ellsworth was found guilty Thursday by an Ellsworth County jury of two counts of rape, one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of aggravated sexual battery, according to information provided by the attorney general's office. Judge Carey Hipp presided over the trial. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

The crimes were committed between September 2015 and January 2016. The charges stemmed from an investigation by the Ellsworth Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.&nbsp;

Beginning Monday and running through March 6, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office will join other law enforcement agencies in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma with increased enforcement near high schools to raise awareness on roadway safety.

Deputies will issue citations to any individual who refuses to obey the traffic laws, whether it is for speeding, texting, or failing to buckle up, the news release noted. Remind teens that driving is a privilege and encourage them to learn about the importance of driving safely.

Sheriff's office participating in roadway safety effort

ABILENE -- Dickinson County Sheriff's Office personnel recently assisted in two cases that resulted in the arrests of two people and the recovery of illegal drugs and other items.

On Feb. 13, the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) was asked to assist the 8th Judicial District Community Corrections at a residence in the 203 South Ninth Street in Herington, according to information provided by the sheriff's office.

DEU detectives, sheriff's office deputies, and Herington Police officers executed a search warrant at the residence. During the search, methamphetamine, marajuana, a firearm, and drug paraphernalia were found, according to information provided by the sheriff's office.

Additionally, Anthony John Sjodahl was arrested on suspicion of the following, the sheriff's office noted.

Possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute

Possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute

Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia

Criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

Arrests made in two Dickinson County drug cases

TOPEKA – A group of young producers from across the state met in Topeka Feb. 18-19 for the first installment of the 2020 Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) Young Stockmen’s Academy (YSA).

Merck Animal Health is again partnering with the association to host these members for an in-depth look into KLA and the beef industry.

The class of 20 will participate in four seminars throughout the year, which will be held in various locations across the state.

During the first session, attendees learned about the array of member services provided by KLA, heard about the importance of being an advocate for the livestock industry, saw KLA lobbyists in action at the state Capitol and took part in the KLA Legislative Meeting. In addition, YSA members attended a Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee meeting at the Capitol and participated in a financial planning seminar conducted by K-Coe Isom.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As part of an interactive training session led by KLA staff, Alma ranchers and beef advocates Arturo and Wrenn Pacheco and WIBW-Topeka farm broadcaster Greg Akagi the group was given an overview of various media outlets available to help tell the beef production story. The Pachecos shared how they have implemented advocacy into their daily routine through the use of their blog, “Cooking with the Cowboy.”

Learn about the benefits of adding more plant-based food to your diet during a Tuesday workshop at Salina Regional Health Center.

SRHC will host a Forward Food Culinary Nutrition Workshop offered by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the

hospital cafeteria dining area. The hospital’s culinary staff will be participating in the workshop, which also is open to the public.

Many organizations and individuals are interested in learning about the benefits of adding more plant-based foods to their menus, the information from SRHC noted. The HSUS presentation will be led by Salina native Kathleen Kastner and Seattle-based vegan chef Amy Webster who will also offer a cooking demonstration and food taste testing.

Kastner said she is excited to bring this plant-based experience to her hometown.

“I’m dedicating this training to my dad, Bob Kastner, who owned City Plumbing Company in Salina for 40 years,” she said. “He died three months after he retired of a heart attack at the age of 67. I wish I could have helped him extend his life by teaching him about the benefits of a plant-based diet.”

Webster will show how to prepare Crabbyless Crab Cakes, Southwest Rebellyous Soft Tacos with Nacho Cheese Sauce and Aquafaba Chocolate Mousse. Taste-testing of the dishes will be offered to participants in the program. The items also will be for sale through the hospital’s cafeteria as part of the daily special menu items.

Forward Food is a program offered by the HSUS to help get more plant-based foods on menus in schools, colleges, and hospitals. Research has shown that a whole-food, plant-based diet can help prevent, treat and reverse heart disease – the leading cause of death in the United States.

ABILENE -- The Dickinson County Sheriff has issued a warning to all residents and businesses in the county concerning counterfeit money.

According to information provided by Sheriff Gareth Hoffman, the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office currently is working several cases in which counterfeit bills have been passed.

Hoffman urged people to be cautious when accepting cash.&nbsp;

"The current money that the Sheriff's Office has collected is clearly counterfeit and easily identified when taking just a bit of time to look at it and feel it," Hoffman wrote. "Should anyone come into possession of this money, please report it to law enforcement."

"The Sheriff's Office expects to file charges on several locals in the near future, but warns that there could very well be more of this counterfeit cash floating around," Hoffman noted.

One of the founders of what is now Salina Media Connection (SMC) is returning to Salina to speak at the organization's annual meeting.

Mike Henry, who from 1992 to 1996 also was the former executive director at what was then known as Salina's Access TV, will be the special guest speaker during SMC's 2020 annual meeting on Feb. 29. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at SMC, 215 North Ninth Street, and is open to the public.
