Kansas Wesleyan University’s Department of Music is forming a new athletic band, The Howl, that will begin performances in fall 2020. 

The Howl will feature all-new instruments, uniforms, and a new vision for an athletic band at KWU.

“The Howl is an important part of our vision for the KWU Music Department,” said Dr. Milt Allen, department chair. “That vision includes further expansion of an environment in which musicians are able to further their gifts and talents in various ways, and The Howl is a key part of that. Our catchphrase for The Howl is 225 percent; that is, 100 percent committed musician, 75 percent sports fanatic and 50 percent big personality. We look forward to meeting students, both those new to KWU and those already here, who can offer that 225 percent mentality and help take this vision to reality.”

“The type of energy The Howl will bring will take our game day experiences to the next level,” said athletic director Steve Wilson. “We always look to provide excellent experiences at KWU, and the possibilities we can explore because of The Howl are endless. Our student-athletes, fans and our community as a whole are going to greatly benefit from the work that is going into The Howl.”

Library seeks teen volunteers for summer

On Feb. 28, 1953, scientists James D. Watson and Francis H.C. Crick announced they had discovered the double-helix structure of DNA.

Robert Earl Keen considers himself a lucky and thankful man. 

Keen, who has amassed 19 records and thousands of shows in his three-decade career, is scheduled to take the stage of the Stiefel Theatre, 151 South Santa Fe Avenue, at 8 p.m. Friday.

"I'm lucky to still be hanging out here and doing this. I feel like everything came full circle in a wonderful way," Keen told Salina Post. "You know, I've done a lot of things by the seat of my pants. I've always been driven by the fact that I've had very few opportunities as far as somebody stepping forward with a bunch of money to do something in the beginning. Everything that has happened is a result of that."

Keen said that he has tried a lot of ways to make music.

"I tried a lot of things. Tried going to Nashville. Tried a label. Tried independent. I think considering it all and my overall trajectory, I am very thankful for my opportunities past, present, and future," he said.

While Keen has accomplished much during his career, he still has something on his musical bucket list that he wants to do.

"I want to do a duet with Sade. I think if I say it enough times, maybe it will happen. I just love her. I love her songs. Her songs are really Spartan and beautiful, there’s no wasted words — it’s just amazing. And her voice! It’s an old cliche, but she really could sing the phone book," he told Salina Post.

Keen said he is "very visual" in his thinking when he writes a song.

"So I start with some sort of setting that I remember or had some impact, anywhere from sitting by a pond fishing or walking down a road, or what I am looking at that time," he explained. "I feel like the way to construct a song with some sort of narrative value is creating the setting. I am very visually oriented. I think the setting is just as important as anything else."

Although Keen is a prolific songwriter, he has a favorite song.

"I like 'Feelin' Good Again' because so many people have told me that it has helped them recover from hardships. That's magic in a song...nothing up my sleeve," he said.

It would seem, perhaps, that the musician himself has a bit of magic as well, judging by the audience response he receives.

"Touring is easy if you have a good audience. The key is the audience. We have fantastic audiences," Keen told Salina Post. 

He said a friend had recently put him on the phone with a woman who had to tell her concert story.

"She had never heard of us, was mad at her husband for dragging her to the show and then told me that it was the best show she’d ever seen. She was so happy to talk about her discovery," Keen said. "Delightful discovery is better than free whiskey."

When he's not busy touring or writing music, Keen stays involved with philanthropic work.

"I am celebrating my 13th annual concert event for Texas’ own Hill Country Youth Orchestras. This year the money raised for the youth orchestras should reach $1 million. The Quebe Sisters will be joining me as the special guests at the Cailloux Theater in Kerrville, Texas, on March 7, 2020," Keen explained. "The youth orchestra is great. It provides the opportunity for children from first grade through 12th grade to participate in the only tuition-free youth orchestra music program in the country. It is the only thing like it around us." 

As for the Salina concert, Keen said it's going to be a fun one!

"I have a killer band. Playing live is one of my favorite things to do. As a matter of fact it is the two best hours of my day," Keen said. "I write my setlist right before the show, so I don’t even entirely know what to expect. But it is going to be fun."

Robert Earl Keen: Lucky, thankful, and a lot of fun

MARION COUNTY — One person died in an accident just after 7p.m. Thursday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford F150 driven by Ronald L. Myhre, 50, Gypsum, was southbound on Kansas 15 just south of the city limits of Durham. The pickup struck a westbound Union Pacific train.

Myhre was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina Fire Station 1 practices blitz attack

TOPEKA – Dakota Patterson of Florence was hanging out with his coworkers before their shifts started when they decided to play some Kansas Lottery scratch tickets. That decision paid off for Patterson, who won $25,000 instantly on a $5 Gold scratch ticket!&nbsp;

“I don’t always buy tickets in the morning, but my coworkers do,” said Patterson. “For some reason I just decided I’d try my luck as well. I’m sure glad I did!”

Patterson bought two tickets, and scratched them off there in the store. The first ticket was not a winner, but the second one matched a winning number. The prize amount listed below was $25,000.

“I didn’t believe it at first, and neither did anyone else,” said Patterson with a laugh. “We all looked at it, and then everyone kind of started freaking out. I didn’t know what to do, but I knew I had to get it claimed in Topeka.”

He called his boss and asked if they could make it without him for the rest of the day because he won a big lottery prize. 

“To prove it, I texted my boss a picture of the ticket, and once he saw it he gave me the day off,” Patterson added.

The 20-year-old concrete worker isn’t quite sure what he’s going to do with the prize just yet. 

“I’m sure I’ll pay off some bills, and after that who knows,” said Patterson. “One thing’s for sure; I’m definitely going to keep playing!”

Florence resident wins $25,000 on lottery scratch ticket

When EquiFest hits town next week, the majority of events will be in Tony's Pizza Events Center and the Saline County Livestock and Expo Center. Thanks to a partnership with the Salina Art Center, however, some events will be in downtown Salina.

“We are truly excited about the collaborative programming between the Art Center, downtown Salina, and EquiFest,” said Justine Staten, executive director of the Kansas Horse Council and event manager for EquiFest.

According to information provided by Salina Art Center, March 4-7 the Art Center Cinema, 150 South Santa Fe Avenue, has turned its facility over to Missouri film-maker, Adam Boster. Boster’s independent film, “The Lost Treasure of Jesse James,” has six showtimes and guests can meet Boster before each showing. Showtimes are as follows.

In the film, a backwoods team of Missouri kids race to solve a 100-year-old mystery and save their friends in this family friendly action adventure. Chased deep into ancient caves they must escape treasure hunters hot on their trail or be lost forever. Tickets are $11 and support Boster’s mission to grow grassroots independent filmmaking. 

On Wednesday at 6 p.m., Boster will host a filmmaker’s workshop at Salina Art Center, 242 South Santa Fe Avenue. During this workshop, local filmmakers will learn how Boster and his Knights Treasure LLC made their two recent features, other films, why they chose these types of films, and their approach to building a sustainable Indy film business in their community. The workshop is free and open to the public.

Then, on First Friday, March 6, Boster and trick rider Matt Jobe, from the film, will be autographing movie posters at Salina Art Center from 4:30-5:30 p.m. While waiting for an autograph, guests can enjoy free cowboy poetry, song, and comedy by Geff and Dawn Dawson and Gary S. Pratt. 

Geff Dawson brings the best of cowboy western entertainment to the Art Center with his original western music and cowboy poetry along with his western comedy. His songs and poetry are about his western way of life while working on ranches in the Kansas Flint Hills. Art Center partnership brings EquiFest events downtown

TOPEKA — Students at 21 schools will have better access to breakfast after a total of $55,965 in subgrants was awarded to 18 districts across the state.

This is the third year the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) has provided the subgrants for innovative breakfast delivery models – and Kansas is seeing an increase in the number of breakfasts being served at schools.

The announcement comes just in time for National School Breakfast Week, which is March 2-6.

The grants boost innovative breakfast delivery models, such as Breakfast in the Classroom, Grab and Go Breakfast and Second Chance Breakfast, which bring breakfast out of the cafeteria and into the classroom.

Grants were made possible by the Midwest Dairy Council, School Nutrition Association of Kansas and Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, said Jill Ladd, assistant director of the Kansas State Department of Education’s Child Nutrition and Wellness team.

“This was the third round of breakfast subgrants that KSDE has been able to award since November 2018,” Ladd said. “The total funds distributed equals $305,557. Innovative breakfast models have helped school breakfast participation in Kansas soar. More schools are offering breakfast via innovative models, and as a result, during the 2018-2019 school year, 864,799 more breakfasts were served as compared to the 2017-2018 school year. This school year (August through November, Kansas schools have already served an additional 537,159 breakfasts as compared to the 2018-2019 school year.”

Students who eat breakfast reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math, score higher on standardized tests, have better concentration and memory, are more alert and are ready to start their day and learn while at school, according to the School Nutrition Association.

Kansas was named as one of the Top 10 states based on percentage of growth in the number of free and reduced-price breakfast participants (2017-2018 school year to 2018-2019 school year, according to the School Breakfast Scorecard released earlier this month. Kansas was ranked sixth with a 2.3% increase in participation.

SES among schools receiving KSDE breakfast grants

No one was injured in a drive-by shooting late Wednesday night in east Salina.

Officers were dispatched to the area near the intersection of East Crawford Street and South Marymount Road at 11:07 p.m. Wednesday for the report of shots fired from a moving vehicle, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Two independent witnesses told police that they saw a possibly black four-door car that was involved with the incident, he said.

Officers found 11 9mm shell casings -- seven along South Marymount Road and four in the parking lot of Hillcrest Apartments, 2140 East Crawford Street, Forrester said.

According to Forrester, the back window of a 2008 Saturn Vue was shot out. The SUV, which is owned by Jesse Rick, 40, of Salina, was parked in the parking lot of the apartment complex, Forrester said. 

Additionally, two rounds were fired into apartment No. 305: one damaging the sliding glass door and the other going into a wall, he said. The occupants of the apartment, Katelyn Pancost, 22, and Collin Miller, 22, were not injured, Forrester said. The apartment is adjacent to Rick's apartment, Forrester added.

A glass window at the entrance to the apartment building owned by Dennis Collier also was shot, he said.

Forrester said that police were returning to the scene today to look for more damage and evidence. Additionally, police are reviewing surveillance video from the area, he said.

CCMC's Gfeller receives award

MANHATTAN – It’s probably a bit early to hope that the cold days of winter are in the rear view mirror, but homeowners with dreams of a lush summer lawn should already be concocting their spring work schedule.

“Now’s a good time to make a lawn care plan,” said Ward Upham, a K-State Research and Extension specialist in horticulture. “I suggest marking dates on a calendar so that important tasks are not forgotten.”

A majority of Kansas homeowners grow such cool-season grasses as bluegrass and tall fescue. In the southern and western parts of the state, Bermuda, zoysia and Buffalo grass are popular warm-season grasses.

Upham, who for nearly 30 years has answered homeowner’s questions through the university’s&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center" target="_blank">Horticulture Information Center</a>, said the months leading up to summer are crucial for setting up the home lawn for success.

“Fertilizing at the correct time can help prepare our cool-season grasses for the stresses of summer,” Upham said. “If you fertilize too little, the turfgrass plants enter the summer in a weakened condition. If you fertilize too much, the plant responds by growing faster, which leads to mowing more often or removing too much of the leaf blade at one time.

“Follow guidelines so that you fertilize at the correct time and with the correct rate, which leads to healthy plants that are better able to fight off disease and weed invasion.”

K-State publishes a&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html" target="_blank">weekly horticulture newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips to help home gardeners maintain healthy landscapes. The Feb. 18 issue outlines a schedule to help homeowners care for their lawns.

March&nbsp;– spot treat broadleaf weeds, if necessary. Weeds should be treated on a day that is 50 degrees F or warmer. Do not water the lawn for at least 24 hours.

April&nbsp;– Apply crabgrass preventer when redbud trees are in full bloom. The preventer needs to be watered in before it will start to work. One-quarter inch of water is enough.

May&nbsp;– Fertilize the lawn with a slow-release fertilizer if you water your lawn, or if you normally receive enough rainfall that the lawn doesn’t go drought-dormant during the summer. Spot treat broadleaf weeds with a spray or use a fertilizer that includes weed killer. Rain or irrigation within 24 hours will decrease the effectiveness of the weed killer, but fertilizer needs to be watered in. If using a product with both fertilizer and weed killer, wait 24 hours before watering.

March&nbsp;–&nbsp;spot treat broadleaf weeds, if necessary. Weeds should be treated on a day that is 50 degrees F or warmer. Do not water the lawn for at least 24 hours.

May – August 15&nbsp;–&nbsp;Fertilize with one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application. Follow the recommendations on the bag.

“More applications will give a deeper green color, but will increase mowing and lead to thatch buildup with zoysia,” Upham said. “Bermudagrass can also have problems with thatch buildup but thatch is less likely with Bermuda than zoysia.”

Upham suggested that homeowners should plan on two to four applications of fertilizer for Bermudagrass, and one to two for zoysia and Buffalograss. He offered the following guidelines to determine when to apply fertilizer:

Two Applications: Apply May and July.

Three Applications: Apply May, June, and early August.

Four Applications: Apply May, June, July, and early August.

MANHATTAN – It’s probably a bit early to hope that the cold days of winter are in the rear view mirror, but homeowners with dreams of a lush summer lawn should already be concocting their spring work schedule.“Now’s a good time to make a lawn care plan,” said Ward Upham, a K-State Research and Extension specialist in horticulture. “I suggest marking dates on a calendar so that important tasks are not forgotten.”A majority of Kansas homeowners grow such cool-season grasses as bluegrass and tall fescue. In the southern and western parts of the state, Bermuda, zoysia and Buffalo grass are popular warm-season grasses.Upham, who for nearly 30 years has answered homeowner’s questions through the university’s&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center" target="_blank">Horticulture Information Center</a>, said the months leading up to summer are crucial for setting up the home lawn for success.“Fertilizing at the correct time can help prepare our cool-season grasses for the stresses of summer,” Upham said. “If you fertilize too little, the turfgrass plants enter the summer in a weakened condition. If you fertilize too much, the plant responds by growing faster, which leads to mowing more often or removing too much of the leaf blade at one time.“Follow guidelines so that you fertilize at the correct time and with the correct rate, which leads to healthy plants that are better able to fight off disease and weed invasion.”K-State publishes a&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html" target="_blank">weekly horticulture newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips to help home gardeners maintain healthy landscapes. The Feb. 18 issue outlines a schedule to help homeowners care for their lawns.For cool-season grasses:March&nbsp;– spot treat broadleaf weeds, if necessary. Weeds should be treated on a day that is 50 degrees F or warmer. Do not water the lawn for at least 24 hours.April&nbsp;– Apply crabgrass preventer when redbud trees are in full bloom. The preventer needs to be watered in before it will start to work. One-quarter inch of water is enough.May&nbsp;– Fertilize the lawn with a slow-release fertilizer if you water your lawn, or if you normally receive enough rainfall that the lawn doesn’t go drought-dormant during the summer. Spot treat broadleaf weeds with a spray or use a fertilizer that includes weed killer. Rain or irrigation within 24 hours will decrease the effectiveness of the weed killer, but fertilizer needs to be watered in. If using a product with both fertilizer and weed killer, wait 24 hours before watering.For warm-season grasses:March&nbsp;–&nbsp;spot treat broadleaf weeds, if necessary. Now’s the time to prep for healthy summer lawns

Kansas Wesleyan University has announced that one of its own, Michael (Mike) Gonzales ’84, will serve as this year’s commencement speaker for the ceremony on May 9.

Gonzales, a member of the KWU Board of Trustees, is a businessman with over 25 years of executive-level experience in leading organizational change. He worked at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in numerous high-ranking roles. In his 30-plus years at the USDA, he was instrumental in leading the innovation of various transformational programs including workforce planning, workload management analysis and performance management that earned recognition as some of the premiere programs in the federal government. He also earned recognition for developing the most comprehensive strategic plan in the USDA.

During his career,&nbsp;Gonzales&nbsp;has led organizations of over 2,000 employees, administered budgets of over $2 billion and implemented and designed policies that led to positive national level effects.&nbsp;

Gonzales&nbsp;also served 21 years in the U.S. Army and the Army Reserves, serving as an Airborne Ranger Intelligence Officer.&nbsp; During his military career, he served and commanded at the tactical, operational, strategic and joint-services levels.&nbsp;

“We are excited to have Mike speak at our commencement ceremony this year,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, president and CEO of KWU. “He has a true wealth of experience in both business and the armed forces, which will help him share wisdom and knowledge on this important day. Mike’s lived and learned experiences that make him an ideal candidate to provide this final lesson for our soon-to-be graduates.”

Gonzales&nbsp;graduated from KWU in 1984 with a degree in business administration and a concentration in economics. He earned his master’s degree from American University in 2000. He currently serves as a Senior Consultant - Human Resources and Organizational Change for Savantage Solutions in Kansas City, Mo. In addition to his role on KWU’s Board of Trustees, he also serves on the Board of Directors for Mercy &amp; Truth Medical Missions, a non-profit that provides health care to the uninsured and under-served in the Kansas City area. He and his wife, Wendy, live in Overland Park, Kan. and have three daughters: Taylor, Casey and Kolbi, all of whom are collegiate student-athletes.

Gonzales, ’84, to speak at KWU commencement

On Feb. 27, 1922, the Supreme Court, in Leser v. Garnett, unanimously upheld the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which guaranteed the right of women to vote.

Boris Nemtsov, a charismatic Russian opposition leader and sharp critic of President Vladimir Putin, was gunned down near the Kremlin.

One year ago: President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un projected optimism as they opened high-stakes talks in Vietnam about curbing Pyongyang's pursuit of nuclear weapons.
