MANHATTAN — Commencement ceremonies may be delayed at Kansas State University, but celebrations and recognitions for the university's nearly 3,350 spring graduates are set. 

The class of 2020, which also will include students earning their degrees this summer and in December, is the 153rd to graduate from K-State.

K-State's May graduates, who have been invited to participate in commencement ceremonies in December, include nearly 2,500 students who will earn bachelor's degrees, more than 650 students earning master's degrees, about 100 students earning doctorates, and 107 students receiving a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. More than 275 students earned their degrees through distance education and nearly 200 students are earning multiple degrees.

"Kansas State University congratulates its May graduates and applauds their resiliency and perseverance in completing their degrees during these unprecedented times," said Richard Myers, university president. "While our in-person commencement ceremonies are delayed and I won't be able to personally hand each graduate their diploma this spring, I salute these graduates from the class of 2020 for their diligence and adaptability to reach this important milestone in their lives."

Students will receive their diplomas, K-State diploma covers, special commencement program and honor cords — if earned for academic performance — in the mail this summer. Each K-State college and the K-State Alumni Association also will recognize the graduates with their traditional gift of a year's free membership to the association.

"What these members of the class of 2020 have achieved is truly special," said Charles Taber, K-State provost and executive vice president. "That's why we hope as many of our new graduates as possible will take part in commencement ceremonies on Dec. 11 and 12 in Manhattan and at Kansas State Polytechnic in Salina. Your hard work deserves to be acknowledged and we welcome your family, friends and loved ones to join in this celebration."

Even though the ceremonies have been delayed, K-State colleges have planned special events, recognitions and tributes to honor their spring graduates:

• Kansas State Polytechnic will have a virtual ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9.

• The College of Veterinary Medicine will have a virtual ceremony on Friday, May 15.

• The College of Architecture, Planning &amp; Design will&nbsp;share a slideshow recognizing each graduate on Saturday, May 16.

•&nbsp;In the College of Arts and Sciences, each department is sending its graduates a message of&nbsp;congratulations&nbsp;along with a congratulatory video message from the dean, Amit Chakrabarti. Some departments also have planned virtual celebrations.

• The College of Education will send a video to all of its graduates that ends with Dean Debbie Mercer ringing the Bluemont Bell, a college tradition on commencement day. The college also will recognize its student award winners and post messages from the graduates on social media.

• The College of Agriculture will share a senior video in recognition of its spring and summer graduates on its social media channels, @kstateag.

• The College of Business Administration will provide an online tribute to its graduates. It will include a video from the dean and a graphic for each graduate and be posted at&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">cba.k-state.edu</a>.

• The College of Health and Human Sciences&nbsp;will share the names of all graduates at 4:30 p.m. May 16, which would have been the time of the college's spring ceremony. The college also will recognize its outstanding seniors on social media May 10-15.

K-State virtual events, recognition to honor students

On April 28, 2020, at 5:11 a.m., officers were sent to Harbor Freight, 1809 South Ninth Street, in regard to a business burglary. 

The suspects forced their way into the building. 

Surveillance photos of two persons were obtained from video surveillance systems. The two persons are suspected to be males who appear to be in their teens or early 20s. The first subject wore a black and white striped winter hat with a pom on top, a red face mask or hankie over his face, a black jacket, blue jeans, dark shoes with white bottoms, and carrying a backpack. The second subject was wearing a dark/black hoodie jacket, a flat bill hat, a red-colored face mask/hankie over his face, gray jogging-style pants, and black/white Nike shoes with red laces.

Dead batteries unintended consequence of stay-at-home orders

The crusade on which we embarked in the early summer of 1944 has reached its glorious conclusion. Full victory in Europe has been attained. - General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, from his "Victory Order of the Day" memo, dated May 8, 1945.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe, or V-E, Day. The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley both played significant roles in World War II.

America's First Division fought in North Africa and Sicily, before leading the invasion of France on D-Day. From its first battle in 1942 to V-E Day, the 1st Infantry Division suffered more than 21,000 casualties, earned eight campaign streamers, and added 17 Medal of Honor winners to the roll of heroes. Following the war, the Big Red One served in occupied Germany, and the division's 26th Infantry Regiment provided security at the Nuremburg war crimes trials.

Fort Riley became an important training center during World War II, with the formation of the 2nd Cavalry Division in 1940 and later the creation of the 9th Armored Division. Approximately 125,000 Soldiers trained at Fort Riley.

Camp Funston would eventually become a prisoner of war camp.

V-E Day and later, V-J Day, marked the end of Fort Riley's role in preparing troops to fight in World War II. Following the war, the cavalry school was closed and efforts turned to training officers in basic military subjects and later training Soldiers for infantry combat. Fort Riley became the home of the Big Red One in 1955.

A wind advisory has been issued for counties in our area.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 3-10 a.m. Friday for Ellsworth and Lincoln counties.

North winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are  expected. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result, NWS noted. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 update for Thursday.

The Saline County Health Department does not have any additional cases of COVID-19 to report today.

At 11 am, KDHE reported the following in their daily release:

•A total of 6,144 positive cases and 147 deaths. That is an increase of 410 positive cases from yesterday’s release.

•38,678 negative tests have been received through the KDHE and private labs.

•The age range is 0 years to 99 years (median 42 years of age).

Saline County is following the Governors “Ad Astra: A Plan to Reopen Kansas” issued through Executive Order 20-29. Currently, Phase 1 is in effect meaning the following activities are not allowed to be open or occur during this time (this plan and additional information can be found at <a href="http://www.saline.org/coronavirus">www.saline.org/coronavirus</a>):

•Large entertainment venues with a capacity of 2,000 or more

•Fairs, festivals, parades, and graduations

•No organized sports team practices

As a reminder as we attempt to reopen Saline County, the entire community is counting on each person to follow the below recommendations to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

•It is highly encouraged to continue to wear cloth masks and maintain social distancing.

•It is highly encouraged for people to only leave their homes for essentials.

•It is highly recommended those employees in any service industry wear PPE (especially cloth masks).

•It is highly encouraged to continue telework.

•Avoid socializing in person with groups of 10 or more individuals in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Recipient Jacqui&nbsp;Dyson, Salina, is an emerging poet who participates in the Xcel After-School program and volunteers at the Salina Emergency Food Bank and Ashby House. 

Dyson&nbsp;plans to attend Emporia State University in the fall to pursue a degree in Social Sciences Education.

The scholarship, presented by Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, is awarded to a graduating senior in central Kansas who shows merit in the field of community enrichment through, poetry, music, art or design. Central's Dyson receives Cash Hollistah Scholarship

Saline County has announced the reopening of a section of Old 40 Highway near Solomon.

Old 40 Highway between Donmyer Road and the City of Solomon is now open to through traffic, however, an asphalt overlay between Niles Road and the City of Solomon is currently under construction, according to information from the Saline County Road and Bridge Department. 

 The overlay operation is utilizing a pilot car for the traffic control.  Motorist must be prepared to stop at the flagger locations, the road and bridge information noted.  Also, there are several locations where the pavement is uneven, so&nbsp; motorists are urged to be cautious when traveling through this area and pay special attention to all construction signs.

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will impact the region today, with rainfall amounts up to around three-quarter of an inch across central and southeast Kansas, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita. 

Locally higher amounts are likely, NWS noted.

A few strong to marginally severe thunderstorms are possible today through this evening. While widespread severe storms are not expected, the strongest activity may be capable of dime to quarter size hail and 50 to 60 mph winds, NWS reported.

NWS: Rainfall, storms expected today, tonight

An apparent BB gun shot damaged a window at a downtown business earlier this week.

The incident is suspect to have occurred between noon on Monday and 5:25 p.m. Wednesday at Farmer's Insurance Group, 154 South Seventh Street, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

The owner of the business noticed that the front window had been damaged by what appeared to be a BB gun shot that caused the glass to crack in several different directions, Forrester explained. The six-foot by six-foot window is valued at $1,000, he added.

A 29-year-old Salina man was arrested Wednesday on requested weapons, theft, and drug charges.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that an officer was sent to Wilson Securty Solutions, 527 South Broadway Boulevard, in regard to a concern about the behavior of Kristoffer Augustine, 29, of Salina. Augustine was in possession of a Taurus PT111 9mm handgun and was seeking assistance because the weapon was malfunctioning, Forrester explained. Augustine left the store before the officer arrived, he added.

During the course of the case, police learned that Augustine is a convicted felon and was not to be in possession of a firearm, Forrester explained.

According to Forrester, an officer located Augustine walking in the 1500 block of East Crawford Street. He was in possession of the handgun, as well as a methamphetamine pipe, Forrester noted. The handgun was registered to a 34-year-old Salina man, he added.

Police made contact with the owner of the handgun, who told them that he suspected Augustine of stealing the handgun between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, Forrester reported. The handgun, valued at $250, had been on a desk in the man's livingroom, but was missing when he awoke on Wednesday, Forrester noted. The man told police that he had not reported the gun stolen because he had to go to work.

Augustine was arrested on suspicion of the following, according to Forrester.

OLATHE – A Kansas State University food safety specialist encourages consumers to head out to their local farmers’ market, and to keep safety in mind.

“Shopping at farmers’ markets is a great way to get healthy fruits, vegetables and other foods while supporting local farmers,” said Londa Nwadike, who has a joint extension appointment with K-State Research and Extension and the University of Missouri

Yet, shopping at the farmers’ market during the COVID-19 pandemic requires some extra precautions, Nwadike said:

Be prepared.&nbsp;Call the market or check its website or social media pages to see which vendors and items will be available. “Give yourself extra time,” Nwadike said. “Shopping might take longer with extra safety measures in place, as many Kansas farmers’ markets have updated their procedures to provide extra safety to customers and vendors. Make a list so you can efficiently find the items you need.”

Before entering the market,&nbsp;remind yourself to avoid touching your face and cellphone. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing a mask or other cloth face covering when in places where social distancing can be difficult.

“Make sure to use a designated entry point when going in,” Nwadike said. “The farmers’ market may have established separate entrances and exits to avoid bottlenecks of people coming and going.”

Choose items with your eyes, not your hands.&nbsp;Let vendors handle the products you select. Stay at least 6 feet away from other people as much as possible.

“You want to avoid standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other customers while examining items,” Nwadike said. “Be patient and courteous while people ahead of you complete their purchases.”

Avoid using cash when possible.&nbsp;Many vendors and markets accept debit, credit and EBT/SNAP cards.

Make use of hand washing stations or hand sanitizer.&nbsp;The CDC recommends hand washing with soap and water, but if hand washing is not available, hand sanitizer can also be used.

For now, resist the temptation to socialize while shopping.&nbsp;“Farmers’ markets are normally a place to enjoy the atmosphere and visit with the vendors and other friends, but right now, farmers’ markets are importantly a source of food and a way to support local farmers,” Nwadike said. Consider sending just one household member to the market at this time.

Wash all produce before eating.&nbsp;“Even though there is currently no evidence that COVID-19 has been transmitted through food or food packaging, it is always important to use good food safety practices, which will help control foodborne illness as well as COVID-19,” Nwadike said. “That means washing the whole produce, even if you don’t eat the peel. Wash items such as cantaloupe and potatoes with a produce brush.”

Nwadike said commercial produce washes have not been shown to be more effective than water from the kitchen faucet. “All the research shows that clean, running water is the best way for consumers to wash produce,” she said.

If you’re running multiple errands, Nwadike also recommends making the farmers’ market your last stop to minimize the amount of time perishable foods sit in the car.
